Chapter 3

He

It had been three months since we started school. Finally we had holidays for two weeks. It felt great to have a break from school. My parents had nothing planned as they had to go to work as usual. Pragya's mother was a housewife and she was always at home so they decided to drop me and Prem off at Pragya's house on weekdays in the mornings and collect us after they finish work, which would be around 4.50pm to be precise. My Dad got to know Pragya's mother while dropping and collecting us in school hence they have become good friends. Even my Mum got to know Pragya's Mum. I called her "Sarlaa Aunty". She was so sweet. I was so happy that we got to play not only amongst ourselves with just me and Prem, but with others too.

But I noticed in the first two days, Prem's behaviour was strange. He had been rude and snappy whenever I play with Pragya and Pranav. I didn't know why? I thought of talking to him. Pragya's house was small, vintage type and it had old collection of family photos everywhere. It had even photos of Pragya's grandparents. We had none of that. The only photos you would have seen at my house was my parents winning trophies for their work, photos of me and Prem whilst we are horse riding or during any outing we had gone to. Her house was like a home. My house just felt like a house. I wondered why? Sarlaa Aunty was always so kind. She was always making sure that we eat loads even if we were not that hungry. She made sure of it, whether we eat fried food which I felt so homely or whether its something so healthy, which I would rather not have. But to keep her happy I tried to have it. If not, I would automatically put my food in Prem's or Pragya's plate when Sarlaa Aunty was not looking. These two would just frown and I would just hum to myself. I know they loved me too much to grass on me. As Pragya had become my best friend within the short span of time, her brother has become somewhat like a friend. I tried to get to know him but my brother always tried to make excuses to be around him. Anyways on the third day itself Pragya and Prem were playing outside the garden as Pragya managed to convince my brother to go with her. They had a little garden but it was so beautiful with two swings, green grass everywhere, flowers at the edge of the garden all around. I was sitting on the steps as Pranav came to me and said, "let's play scramble".

He wanted me to play scramble with me. I was surprised because he was a seventh grader and I was in Kindergarten. I barely knew words with length greater than 5 letters. But he was so sweet. He gave me easier words. We started playing scramble often. After few days, we started playing in teams. Pragya and Prem were in a team and I and Pranav formed the opposite team. We started playing hide and seek, carrom board, tig tag etc. We would call ourselves 'Boyz team' and Pragya would reply that they are 'THE team'. If I and Pragya decided to be in one team for a change, Prem would never let us. He always liked to be in Pragya's team. I didn't know whether it was because he liked Pragya or he didn't feel comfortable around Pranav. One day, my Dad was stuck in office and he informed Pragya's Mom through phone that he would come late. He also apologised to Sarla Ma for giving trouble to which she replied that its her pleasure to have me and Prem in her home. It was getting darker and we were playing hide and seek in the garden. I was the seeker. I was searching for others and I saw Pragya hiding behind a plant. I went near her and told, "you can't escape me Pragya". Before I could catch her, I felt someone was behind me. I turned around to see a big man. I had seen him in the photos in some of the photos at Pragya's home. He was Pragya's Dad. He lifted me with his gigantic hands and I was nervous.

She

It was holiday time and we had break for two weeks. I was so excited. I was excited that I had holidays. I was excited that I had no school. I was excited that I get to spend time with my brother and my family. I beamed as I didn't get to spend time with my brother at school because he was in seventh grade when I was in Kindergarten. I thought that I would make the most of it during the holidays. I loved irritating him, annoying him, fighting with him, wrestling with him, and playing games with him. We had the best time in those moments. He was just the best big brother anyone could ask for. He was very hard on the front but very soft inside. The softest side was one that only I can get to see which just made me ecstatic. Abhi and Prem also joined us during day time for two weeks because Abhi and Prem's parents work. It was fun having them around. Prem was utterly quiet whereas my best friend Abhi seemed to get along with my mother just fine.

I saw Abhi trying to get along with my brother but Prem always wanted Abhi around him. He was feeling a little insecure as our home was new to him. I convinced Prem to come with me to play in the garden while leaving Abhi with my brother. Prem was a very quiet boy. It was very difficult to get him to talk or play. But he started being a little active as time progressed. I and Prem were prone to form a team and my brother and Abhi would end up being the opposite team. Prem started becoming my shadow. As soon as Abhi and Prem's father dropped them, Prem would come and sit next to me. If Abhi wanted to sit near me, Prem wouldn't let him and he would get upset. I once asked him whether he was afraid of my brother and he nodded yes. Whenever I wanted to scare him, I would tell him that my brother was there and he would start running. One day Abhi and Prem's Dad had said that he would come late so we were playing even after it became dark. We were playing hide and seek and Abhi was the seeker. I didn't know how Abhi found that I was hiding behind a plant. He was telling me that I can't escape him. I closed my eyes as Abhi was about to catch me. But he didn't come even after two minutes had passed. I looked around and saw that my Dad was lifting him .

He

I was staring at him for few seconds. As time went on I got even more nervous. As soon as he smiled and said "Hey little champ, I am Pragya's Dad and you are Abhi?", I had a huge sigh. I gave him a smile and said with hesitation "Yes, my name is Abhishek Mehra and everyone calls me Abhi. If you like you can call me little champ. I heard so much about you from Pragya and Pranav and now finally getting a chance to meet you, you see we were playing and when I kind of saw...". I was talking non-stop because I got so nervous for an unknown reason. He started laughing in the middle of my sentence and I looked at him. He was laughing so whole heartedly. I had never seen my father like this. He was always smiling but moody so he never laughed, unless I tickled him. I chuckled as I was having random thoughts. He asked me where were the others and I pointed towards Pragya as she was hiding and told him my brother Prem and Pranav were hiding too. So we started to look for everyone together. It was full of fun and jokes. Then the time came when my parents had to pick us up. I and Prem were sitting down in the living room with Pragya's family watching television Tom and Jerry, until my parents arrived...

Sarla Aunty brought us some snacks to eat. Sarla Aunty's snacks were always different. They had less oil and more vegetables. This time she had made Palak Pakora. Prem took his plate away from me as he knew that I hated spinach. I was thinking of putting some of my pakoras in Pragya's plate. I and Prem heard my Dad's car. Prem looked at the entrance while I was looking at him. Dad came inside in a hurry. He was meeting Pragya's Dad for the first time. Sarla Aunty introduced my Dad to Pragya's Dad. Pragya's Dad praised that we were good kids. Dad thanked him and Sarla Aunty for taking care of us. Dad asked us to come as it was getting late and Mom would be waiting for us. Sarla Aunty insisted us to have dinner but Dad denied it politely. While going home in car, I was sticking to the car window as Dad rarely got us out at night. I and Prem slept quickly as we lied on the bed. I woke up in the middle of the night to Mom and Dad's voice. I looked by my side and found that Prem was missing. I went out of our room and started walking in the direction of my parents' voices. Prem was lying in my Mom's lap. I went into my parents' room and sat on my Dad's lap. I asked him whether Prem was unwell again. Dad said that there was nothing to worry about. But Mom looked worried.

She

While I was hiding in my hiding place, I crawled forward to see what my Dad and Abhi upto. I couldn't really tell what they were doing but it looked like they were talking. I was smiling to myself as it looked like they were introducing themselves. While they were busy talking, I was frantically searching for my brother and Prem before Abhi started looking for me again. I could not find them but I saw my Dad and Abhi coming my way and I carried on crawling until I saw the corner outside of my shed. I waited anxiously until they caught me. It took another ten minutes to catch Pranav and Prem. After playing we were so tired that Dad took us inside. We were watching television with my family, my best friend and his brother. It was Tom and Jerry which was not so appealing for my parents to watch but they were happy enough to sit with us and enjoy.

We started watching TV until Abhi and Prem's Dad arrived. Mom had made my favorite Palak Pakora. Actually I loved all the dishes that my Mom made. My brother would tease me that I would say it was delicious even if my Mom gave me just hot water. Prem was looking outside when his father came inside in a hurry. Mom introduced my Dad to him. My Dad used to come home only after 7 pm and their Dad would come to pick up Abhi and Prem by 4:50 pm. So my Dad and Abhi's Dad had never met before. Abhi's Dad thanked my parents and took them with him in his car. I heard my parents talking about Abhi and Prem at night and I pretended to be asleep. Dad said they looked 100% identical. Mom said that Abhi was an active child while Prem was a obedient kid.

Awww, cutie patooti update!! I love how the story rewinds a little when it switches from Pragya to Abhi (or vice versa) and we get the same scene in their perspective. Props to you guys for choosing that style!
Okay, I loveee this Prem. Maybe a little more than Abhi *runs and hides* Maybe because I was the obedient child in my family, whereas my little sister was the rebel, so I can connect with Prem more. But HOW adorbs is he, always trying to cling to Pragya because of his fear of Pranav. And its so realistic, because even I remember being scared of older kids, who were nothing but sweethearts!

Interesting how Abhi, at just five years old (Aha, so they are kindergarteners!), is able to decipher how different the family dynamics are between his house and Pragya's. LOVE LOVE LOVE the subtle, yet significant differences you guys brought out, especially the part where he notices the differences in what pictures has been framed in the two homes.

Oh no, what is wrong with Prem? I love him too much to see him suffer anything too serious!

Personal favorite line:

I loved irritating him, annoying him, fighting with hem, wrestling with him, and playing games with him. We had the best time in those moments. He was just the best big brother anyone could ask for. He was very hard on the front but very soft inside. The softest side was one that only I can get to see which just made me ecstatic.

LOVE LOVE HAPPY LOVE! Wonderful update, as always! Nivs&Nadz, you guys are magical together! 👏

Chapter 4

He

This routine continued for twelve days and it was definitely the most fun and memorable holiday I have had so far and the last two days of our holidays was even more fun as my parents took leave for work and decided to join us. Pragya's papa also had two days off. So me, Prem, Pragya, Pranav, my parents and Pragya's parents we all went to Goa as decided by our parents. It was a place I had never went before. Mind you, then I never went outside of my city so this was my first time ever experience. As we travelled to Goa by train, we had a fight for the window seats. There were only two window seats among the seats that were alloted to us. Mom told us to take turns in having the seat. Finally, we decided we could share the seats. Pragya and Prem shared a window seat while me and Pranav sat on the window seat opposite to theirs. Once we reached our destination we had lots of fun over the two days.

Goa was all fun. First, we went for a boating trip. The guy in the boat told us that if we were lucky, we could even see Dolphins. I and Pragya were so curious that we were staring at the vast ocean ahead during the whole of boating trip. We didn't even talk to others. Suddenly Prem shouted that he saw a Dolphin springing up. None of us saw anything in the direction he pointed. He was disappointed that he couldn't show it to us. The boat guy told he must have seen something else as Dolphins were not so quick. Prem didn't agree. Pranav said that he must have seen something else and asked him to stop arguing. Prem stopped talking at once. We went to various beaches in Goa. We even had sandcastles competition. Pragya's sandcastle was so beautiful but it got washed away as she built very near to the sea. I helped her build a new one near my sandcastle. Pranav was the judge. We were anxious to know the winner. Surprisingly, he chose Prem's castle. We returned home by train as I and Pranav became too fond of train journey. Prem also suggested Dad to not book flight tickets. As I lied on my bed that day, I had many dreams about my first day in grade 1. Prem started sleeping as soon as he got on the bed but I couldn't sleep as I was going to a new class the next day.

She

It was great having Abhi and Prem around for almost two weeks in my house. We enjoyed, played and even fought for food. I was a foodie and so was Prem. Something we had in common and often even started competing who can eat more. I would win each time hands down. I and Abhi had similar food likings so we always shared our food together in a plate. It felt nice even though Prem did not like that for some reason. He would always get Abhi to get his attention and would want to share his food with him. Then I would always interrupt and ask Prem to share food in the same plate with me instead, surprisingly I would see Abhi sulking. Once when I asked him what happened and he said that he doesn't like sharing his best friend with anyone. It felt nice and special. But I assured him that no one will share his place in my heart of a bestie and he smiled brightly at that. Once again I went back in sharing my plate with Abhi. This is how it was like during the most of the two weeks. My and Abhi's parents decided to take us to Goa in the last two days. I was excited as I had never been to Goa before. The only place I ever been to other than around Mumbai was Punjab because of my Daadi as her in laws were from that place but that was when I was one to two years old. I didn't have a memory of that but my mum always tells me little stories about me and Pranav. As we travelled to Goa by train which took few hours, we made lots of memories over the course of two days.

Goa was very beautiful. The beaches were different from that in Mumbai. I sticked by my best friend Abhi wherever we went. When we went boating, the boat guy told us that there were dolphins in the sea. I had seen dolphins only on TV. I wished we could see a dolphin that day. Abhi was also curious as we started looking for dolphins together. Prem started shouting "Dolphin Dolphin" and pointed towards the sea. Unfortunately, we couldn't see anything. It seemed the dolphin went under the water already. The boat guy didn't accept that Prem saw a dolphin. Prem started arguing with the guy. He told his mom and dad that he really saw a dolphin. It was the first time I saw Prem talking continuously but he stopped when my brother told him to stop talking. Prem being afraid of my brother was very funny to me. I thought his fear will reduce with time but it didn't. The next day my brother hosted a sandcastle building competition. I built a sandcastle quickly even before Abhi and Prem could finish more than half of their castle. My castle got washed away before I could call my brother to have a look at it. Prem came to me running but stopped seeing Abhi already near me. Abhi helped me build a new sandcastle. I wished Abhi's castle to win as Abhi had left his castle half way in order to help me. But my brother chose Prem as the winner. I wasn't sad as Prem was my friend too. Abhi's parents were talking about returning to Mumbai via flight. I heard my parents talking alone about managing flight travel expenses. I was worried about them. But then Abhi and Prem's parents agreed to travel by train. As I lied on my bed that day, I felt very happy as I was going to go to school on my own from the next day. Yes, dad had promised me that mom would let me go to school on my own after I reach grade 1.

He

It was my first day at High School. I was in 6th Grade. Luckily, it did not feel like a first time experience even though I was nervous and excited at the same time just like the first time when I went for the kindergarten, this time I had Prem and Pragya with me. Pragya and Prem were wondering which classes they will have and how the new teacher would be like. I was lost in thoughts. I need to be in one of the classes I thought. Otherwise, I was not sure if I will be interested in listening to the teachers as I might just fall asleep. The bell and Pragya at the same time calling my name brought me back from the thoughts that I was in. Here we go, I thought. As we entered the hall, we were told from the letter we need to wait in the hall in order to find out what classes we were in and teachers we will have.

I could have never been so happier. I, Pragya and Prem were assigned the same class. I was so excited as I was about to enter my new class. Prem was also happy as he didn't have to be alone in a different class. My excitement got cut down as I saw Arjun passing by. I wondered why on earth should he join the same school as us. I was a little relieved that he belonged to a different class. I never liked him because he had the habit of coming between me and Pragya. Pragya was my best friend and no one should have dared to come between us. The teacher told us that boys and girls should sit separately. I and Prem sat on the first beach that was on the left side of our classroom while Pragya sat on the first beach on the right side of the room. But Pragya's place wasn't far away from me as we both sat at the corners of the beaches. The teacher started her lessons. Prem was looking at the board continuously. It seemed like the board was blurry to him.

She

I was in my 6th grade. It was my first day at the new school and it was a great feeling. Being a kid, I always dreamed of being an elder so I can help around with my mum and dad more. I was in the hall with my best friend Abhi and his dearest brother and my innocent buddy like brother Prem. I and Prem were busy talking about our first day at school about how it's going to be, which classes we are going to be in and what teacher we will have and so forth but I realized Abhi was unusually ever so quiet. I tried calling his name to get him out of whatever world he was in and name calling and the bell helped him by the looks of it when he nodded at me. Then we all went to the hall to find out the happenings of the school and where we belonged.

Luckily all three of us belonged to the same class. I was so happy that I could be with Abhi in this school too. This time Prem was also joining us. The happiness didn't last much as the teacher told that girls and boys should sit separately. That meant I can't sit with Abhi. I sat on the first bench and it was like Abhi read my thoughts. He sat on another first bench at the other side of the room. Prem sat near him. The teacher started the class and I was curious about the first science lesson I would learn. I loved Science as it was always interesting. I took out my note and started writing. I got reminded of Abhi searching for pencil during the first day at our old school. I looked at him to make sure whether he had a pen this time. He wasn't concentrating on the lesson. He was looking at Prem worried. It seemed that Prem had difficulty in reading the blackboard. I wondered whether he would also start wearing spectacles like me.
