Part 3

I got home and settled myself on the couch. "Thank God, mom's not awake.. I started to think.

"Abhi?" she said, coming down the stairs. Her hair was all messy and there were three lines on her forehead. I suppose from worrying.

"Kya hai, ma?" I said picking up the remote control and flipping a channel.

"Where've you been? It's late."

I glance at her. "Just hanging out"

"Stay at home more often," my mother told me, no more like ordered me.

I increased the volume of the t.v. casually.

She looked at me impatiently. "This is your last warning Abhi.."

"This is my last warning mom, keep up the attitude and I will get out of this house myself."

My mother shook her head at me. "I know you Abhi. You won't move from this house. Not unless I kick you out."

"Then what are you waiting for?" I say, faking a smile. I wince, that's where I had gotten punched.

Mother cleared her throat and gestured towards the bruise on my face. "Take care of it."

-*-

"Rockstar, why won't you talk to me?" Fuggi pouted, as she stepped in front of me.

"I'm dumb (mute)," I told her sarcastically.

"Good one yaar," Fuggi replied, laughing along with me. "Ab let's go do some homework together."

"No, I have to get to work," I answer.

"Jhoote," she said laughing at me again. "I know you have half an hour left! Come with me." With that she grabbed my arm and dragged me along with her.

We sat down at a table and this time instead of taking out her schoolbooks, Fuggi took out a newspaper.

I saw her eyes skim the paper as if to confirm something. She looked up at me and then glanced back down at the newspaper.

She smiled at me nervously, before speaking up. "um Abhi, I don't know if this is the right time and place to show you this..?"

I snatch the newspaper from her. "What is it..?" She covered the newspaper with her hands.

"First promise you won't get angry with me for showing you?"

"I can't guarantee.." I said, eying her suspiciously. Fuggi had a tendency of irritating me.

"Hmm..-" As soon as I saw the picture on the newspaper, there was a rage inside of me.

It was that man. My father, Mehra.

"Look Abhi, I feel you should meet him."

"For goodness sake Pragya, we all hate this man. Why are you showing me this?"

"He's coming to town, Abhi! This is a good chance for you to meet him!"

"You know what he did, don't you?" I asked her, annoyed by her ignorance.

"yes, yes.." she said waving it aside. "But I think that it's been so many years he'll probably have matured a bit. you know. maybe the fatherly feeling inside him has arose?"

"yeah, right."

"Look Abhi, why would he come back? Huh, this business deal is just a facade. He wants to see you."

"Really Pragya, you and my sis should get together some time. Since when are you starting to get so filmy? There is no emotion!"

"Mom is gonna be pretty heartbroken if she finds out that I'm meeting that man. I don't blame her."

"Well, I really feel-" she tried, gently. She pleaded with her face.

"Sorry Fuggi, I know you wanna help. Honestly, stop being so filmy and goody-good. I am fine without that extra dose of drama in my life. Was having a cheat-father not enough?"

"Gosh Abhi!" Pragya shrieked, as if I'd cursed her. "Don't use that language for your father."

The librarian came out of one of the mini-built in rooms where the special books are kept. "Ms. Arora!" she snapped at her. "Use inside voices! I don't mind small talk, but seriously.. this is still a library.."

Fuggi pressed her lips together. "Yes, Mrs."

On one side I was angry with her for bring up the topic of my father, but in one area of my heart I wanted to laugh. She always looks so funny when she gets in trouble. She puts on this hurt-innocent expression and her eyebrows shoot up.

"You too Mehra, stop riling her up," the librarian told me, a gleam in her eye. "We know how much you two like to fight."

Fuggi and I had once started arguing in here over a trivial topic and ever since then the librarian has this idea that we love arguing.

"It's my birthday next week, you're invited!" I say, winking at her.

Fuggi looks from the librarian to me in surprise.

The librarian really thinks I am the cutest student for some reason, and I suppose I some times use that to my advantage.

Fuggi starts to say something to me, but then I get serious. "Shut up Fuggi, I want none of this." "How many times have I told you I don't wanna talk about that guy? He's not a good guy."

"But-"

"I am getting late for work," I say, glancing at my watch. "Next time, I don't wanna discuss this with you alright?"

She nodded at me.

She spoke up once more. "Abhi..?"

"What!" I snap back, to which the librarian clears her throat warningly.

"I composed a song for you, wanna come over and sing it for mom and me sometime?"

"That's all..?" I asked, relieved. (Fuggi once tricked me into talking about my father, by inviting me to a coffee shop. I was of course scared by the thought that she might want to ask me out, but I was more annoyed when she mentioned my father.)

"yeah," she said smiling, as if she knew what I was thinking. I grinned back at her. "Tell aunty to keep some treats ready for me tomorrow."

...

Nikhil called me up while I was on duty. There weren't many customers showing up, so I figured I'd take the call.

"Yeah, Nikhil?"

"You know Ronnie?" Nikhil burst out, as if he'd been holding a secret for quite a long time.

"Yeah man, what about him?" I say. I heard a door slam and my coworker rushed to the next customer.

"He ditched his parents, bro. I saw his facebook status and I even had a personal chat with him! It's true."

"He's only eighteen," I said into the phone. "He doesn't even make a decent earning, what did he think he was doing?"

"I don't know man, just that Ronnie needs a place to stay for tonight. He'll figure something out for tomorrow but he wanted me to help him out for the night."

"Okay good, but give him a punch from me. No, wait. I should come over. Like really, what must his parents be feeling?"

"I don't know Abhi. But basically I need your help. I'm gonna tell Ronnie to go to your place for tonight. My father stays up late working at night and he won't allow me to have a moron like Ronnie over."

"Look, I'm not gonna. My mom won't allow me to have a moron like Ronnie over' either." "Plus, I have a younger sister at home.. unlike you, which makes matters even worse if we get caught."

"Abhi!" I look up at my manager. I quickly shove my phone into my pocket.

"You're supposed to be on duty," he told me seriously.

"Sorry," I replied.

"I can have you fired," he said, quietly. "In fact, you have met the full requirements of being kicked out. The money thefts, your tactics, and the customers' complaints aren't doing you any good."

I started protesting. "I didn't steal anything, and it was a single customer who complained."

"And for talking back to your manager. You could be fired."

My heart felt like it dropped.

"Sir, I'm sorry. I promise not to make a mistake in the future," I requested, trying to handle the situation. "Please give me a second chance."

"Come back a week from now," the manager answered. "Get your act together."

Great. It was pretty much a suspension. At least, I wasn't being fired. I nodded, a little too happily, for the manager shot me a sharp look. "It's your last chance, son."

...

At dinner that night, Ryanna tried to get my attention by cracking some stupid jokes.

"Very poor sense of humor," I whispered to her. She swore under her breath to which I replied, "Say another word and I will tell mom."

"Hmph," she said and got up to leave. "I'm done with my dinner mom. I'm gonna wash the dishes, quick."

Soon I went into the kitchen and set my dishes on the counter, just as she was finishing up the last spoon. She finished drying it dramatically and then stepped away leaving my dishes untouched.

"Go ahead, wash em," she told me.

"I'm gonna tell mom," I say.

"Go, go," she said grinning. "I know you can't tolerate it when mum yells at me."

True that, I really hate it when mom takes out her anger on Ryanna. She is, after all my younger sis.

"Okay fine, I'm sorry," I replied, letting go of my fake grudge.

"It's just I almost got fired today."

"Almost?" Ryanna asked dramatically, and I wondered whether to tell her or not. We all know that she can't keep a secret. It's not her fault, I guess but still.

"I was off-task," I finally replied. "But no worries, just a week's suspension. No biggie."

"How would mom react to this?" Ryanna pondered.

"Not much, if we keep this a secret."

"What do I get?" she asked.

"20 bucks."

"Deal," she said, smilingly.

...

Later that night, at about eleven I heard something smash against my window. I turned on the light and saw a figure standing with a flashlight.

"Abhi, it's me. Ronnie."

"Crap. I told Nikhil not to send you here!" I said sharply, while at the same time trying to keep my voice low.

"He's a silly man," Ronnie answered. "Plus, I am a drunk man right now. How about you help me?"

"No," I answered him. "Just leave, Ronnie."

"Man Abhi," I saw him walking closer, and then he tripped over something.

When he didn't speak for a while, I spoke up. "Ronnie?"

"Mmm.." I heard him groan.

He's passed out' I thought to myself. Great.'

I knew that I couldn't wait for mom to discover him early in the morning when she left for work, so I decided to break my no guys over, while sister and mom are home' rule.

It was a tough time sneaking him into the house and finally into my room, but I managed it. I locked my door, just in case mom decided to check on me.

Nice story. Loved it. So Abhi and fuggi are best friends here. Loved how he is protective towards her. Tanu, hated her. She doesn't leave opportunity to insult her. Here Tanu doesn't like Abhi? Is she jealous with Pragya as she is Abhi's close friend. So Mr. Mehra is alive here. Waiting to know, how will he meet the family given their hatredness, as he is coming to the town. Oh no!! Ronnie came his home. It will give him problems I think. ... Update next chapter soon.
