So this is what fallen angels looked like. Tortured, face twisted in guilt. Shaken. And eyes that hide.

Pragya turned away from the door, her hands clenched into fists at her side. Squaring her shoulders, she walked away. If only she could walk out the front door, keep walking, down the gravel-fronted driveway, through the main road, away. Far away. But she couldn't. Not when Dadi waited for her bahu. Not when Ma depended on her daughter.

Why was she upset anyway? She had told him she did not expect anything from him. And she knew Chudail didn't she? The witch wouldn't stop clinging and leeching him. And he was too blind to see her truth.

But ... was it too much to ask? Too much to hope that at least for her husband she didn't come second? Why was she always the second one? Everyone's second thought. The eternal second choice.

For once she wanted to come first in someone's life. Not just in any one's. In her husband's life. Live a normal, married life. A life every married woman is entitled to. One where the husband recognizes and respects the woman he married. One where the husband loves and cares for the woman he married. One where, when the husband puts the glittering red kumkum in the maang of his wife every morning, he does it because he wants to, because it reiterates their bond every single day of their lives.

Was it too much to ask then? Too much to expect from her bhagya? Well, then, she did not want this bhagya.

It was time to re-write her destiny.
