"I broke up with Tanu."
Her hushed silence tore the truth from him. "She said she was pregnant." He glared at her. How was this her fault?
"Unless it's the most miraculous pregnancy since the birth of Christ, I don't see how it can be mine."
A twinge of pity at the bewildered desperation of the other woman surprised Pragya. She understood. Oh only too well.
"So you left her when she needed you the most."
He whipped around to her. "I have no problems in helping her. I will not let her manipulate me!"
And this from the man who had manipulated her through their entire marriage. "Why are you telling me?"
"Because you are my wife. And you have the right to know."
Ah. Marital rights. She had none of those.
And yet, she had fallen in love with this man. With the sheer goodness that sparkled through him.
"It doesn't matter."
His eyes blazed with fury. "Or are you trying to make it not matter?" He gripped her arm, their first touch in weeks. "It will always matter. To me." His grip tightened. "And to you."
She twisted her arm out and looked away.
"You didn't ask me why I broke up with her."
She turned to stare at him.
"Not because she may be pregnant."
Oh?
"She said that when I told her we were done." He looked at her pleadingly. "I owed her that much - a clean break."
His look turned into a caress. "We were done because I am married to you. The woman who has become the center of my existence."
"The woman who isn't even your choice."
"The woman who is my only choice."
Perhaps she was not wrong to hope then. Maybe she had the right to hope, to love. And to be loved.
Author's note:
A few days after i wrote the 1st part, i read about Flash Fictions. Really short stories, less than 1000 words, often even shorter than that. So i took that on as a challenge. And if you have read anything else by me, you will know it really is a challenge 😊! Word count wise, I met the goal - this story is less than 900 words. Hopefully though i still managed to tell a tale? Please let me know.
Thanks for reading,
Kat
