Smita: I want my dues!
By: Vickey Lalwani
February 6, 2007

Smita Singh
Smita Singh (Chameli of Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki) has been a TV actor for six years and she's never faced problems on the payment front.

However, the Sony show Kulvaddhu will go down in memory as her first unpleasant experience, as she has not been paid her dues for two days worth of work. Kulvaddhu is produced by actor Anuj Saxena's Maverick Productions.

Strike three

Smita says her start at Maverick was unbelievably good. "They made me feel very important when they came to me with the offer. They went over the top saying how much they wanted only me to do Bindiya's role. Mr Saxena, whom I have worked with in Kkusum, personally told me at the launch party that it was great we were working together again."

The ordeal began when she reported on the set in November 2006. She was called for two days and then dropped from the show on the third.

"On the first day (November 7), I shot just one scene with them. On the second day (November 10), I was on the set for the entire day and they did not shoot even one scene with me.

On the third day, they wanted me to come to the set at 8 am, so naturally I asked what time my scene would be shot. I was told it would happen at noon, so why was I being asked to come and sit there from 8 am? After that, they did not get back to me. I kept calling, but nobody answered. After five days, I learnt that someone else was going to do my role."

'It's my right'

Smita says Maverick owes her Rs 9,000 for the two days she went to work. The actress says she has a contract which states she will be paid Rs 4,500 per day. "I was told that my cheque would be ready by December 21. Since then, I've been calling constantly and paying personal visits to the production house's office with no response.

It's been over a month now and I am very tired. I don't know what kind of people have been appointed at Maverick; there is hardly any one sitting there."

But Smita is uncomfortable calling Anuj directly. "I don't think that would be right. Nobody calls up the producer for dues. The accounts department handles these matters."

Smita says she isn't irked as much about being dropped, as she is about
the fact that they're refusing her payment for the work she has done. "I am not being given money for two days which they consumed. TV actors are paid on a daily basis, and every professional has to be particular in this regard. I am just demanding my right," Smita says.

Producer Anuj Saxena preferred not to comment, failing to revert to our queries.

'The cheque is ready!'

Anuj Saxena
On getting our message, Anuj Saxena promptly called Rekha Vaid (Vice President, Maverick) and asked her if she had stopped Singh's payment. Rekha called us pronto. Here's the conversation that followed:

Why has Smita Singh not been paid?

One of the supervising producers resigned a few days ago and her signature was required to clear Smita's payment. The new supervising producer brought Smita's dues to my notice and we have done the needful now. Her cheque is ready. Smita needs to come personally to collect her cheque, as we need to have a talk with her. She has not done the right thing.

What did she do?

Smita signed a contract with us stating that she would give us 15 days. Then she told us she is also doing Rajshri Productions' Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki and her role has increased there, so she wanted us to make date adjustments.

After that, she was not willing to come for the shoot. She even said we should to talk to Rajshri Productions to get those adjustments done. We told her that this was not done, but she continued pleading that we should adjust. It is very important to teach such people a lesson, so we decided to replace her. Shweta Gautam is doing her role now.

Smita says she shot only one scene on day one and was cooling her heels on day two.

Such things happen when a show is in the initial stages, but Maverick suffered a loss of Rs 5 lakh to re-shoot Smita's scenes with Shweta.

'I'd love to be the next item boy'

Sachin Sharma is all set to give Rakhi Sawant some serious competition.

HARSHADA REGE

Though Sachin Sharma became popular as the villainous Aryan in Sony's Vadehi, he is happy that he hasn't been slotted as the bad guy. "I can understand why the audiences can't visualise an actor who plays the bad guy portraying a positive character otherwise. I have been lucky that people have not slotted me under any category," he says.
Sachin will now be seen playing Shaurya in Sony's Kulvaddhu. Sachin says, "Till date I have played characters that have evoked sympathy or anger, but this is a character that people will look up to. He is the kind of person whom parents would want their kids to emulate."
And though Sachin is busy with television, the actor is also trying to do films. "I see to it that my schedule doesn't clash because I don't want my producers to suffer in any way," says the actor.
His film Mummyji has Sachin doing an item number. And the actor is very excited about shaking a leg on the screen. "I love dancing and have enjoyed myself immensely doing the item number. I'd love to be the next item boy. I am looking forward to doing more item numbers in the future. Personally, of course, I am more of a bhangra person."
Speaking about Mummyji, Sachin says, "It's a total paisa vasool film. The film is about a mother keen to get her son married of to a girl of her choice." The film also stars Jackie Shroff
The actor is also looking ahead to sign more films. So, will he shift his focus from television to films? "No ways! Television has given me fame and recognition. I am, what I am today because of television. And no matter how many film offers I get I will not look down on doing TV serials. I would like to believe that I can balance both. Also today TV is no longer considered to be small. You have the biggest Bollywood stars on TV. It's a huge business and is supporting many people."
The actor was recently linked to Saumya Tandon aka Rusty of Aisa Desh Hai Mera. When asked about that the actor says, "I don't want to talk about it at all." Looks like the actor wants to show his moves only on screen.

Daljeet Kaur

Kulvaddhu, Sony TV

"I've inherited my hair from my mom and dad. My mom keeps cribbing that I don't oil my hair. So I suggest, for lustrous, healthy hair, oil it at least once a week, if not twice, keep it over-night and wash your hair in running water. Once in a while I apply curd."

'I have no one to romance this Valentine's Day'

... says Ayaz Khan who'll be spending the day shooting for his serial

HARSHADA REGE

From modelling to films to TV to films, Ayaz Khan has done it all. Ayaz will now be seen in Sony's Kulvaddhu and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. Having been a part of the advertising world for a long time, Ayaz has moved to acting after a long time. "That's because I was studying. After completing my graduation, I was studying management and law. That gave me time for modelling but nothing else. But I am not complaining," he says.
While he'll be playing one of the many family members in Kulvaddhu, he has been cast opposite Sandhya Mridul in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. Ayaz who has played a small part in the movie Bluffmaster, says he is still recognised as the guy who Priyanka Chopra's dating in the movie. "Though it was a small role, people still remember me from the film. That's how big films are. They stay in people's mind for longer time," he says. Ayaz says he is excited about his other film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na that's being made by Aamir Khan.
Dabbling in films and TV can to be quite a balancing act, says Ayaz. "I have shot for 48 hours continuously, when I would come home only to take a shower," he says. Speaking about doing television as well as films, Ayaz says, "Television has become so big today. An actor's job is to entertain people and that's what I believe in doing."
The actor was supposed to make his big screen debut in a movie titled Phir Zindagi that also featured Milind Soman and Gul Panag. "But that movie was never released. But I am happy with my role in Honeymoon.... I may not be the lead actor, but my role is important," he says. But isn't it beneficial to debut in a solo hero film? "Why would any producer launch me as a solo hero, when they can have a big hero to do so?" he says. "But getting a break in TV has become as difficult as getting a break in films. Especially if you want to do quality work," say the actor.
Speaking about his personal life Ayaz says, "I am very much single. I have no one to romance this Valentine's Day."

Sapana Patil Poojary

Daljit Kaur (Niyati of Kulvaddhu) has a secret admirer who regularly sends her bouquets. Daljit is ecstatic and intrigued at the same time as she is happy to have an admirer but is wondering who her admirer is. The bouquets always bears a tag of the letter 'S'.

A surprised Daljit says, "Yes, I have been receiving a series of bouquets recently. They always have a small message for me but don't bear the sender's name."

Daljit Kaur
When asked about how and when it all started, Daljit recalls, "It started at Jodhpur. We were there for a press conference several weeks ago. I got a huge heart-shaped bouquet with about 500 roses in it. It said, 'To Deepa, From S'. I was really shocked. Not many people know that I am also called Deepa. The sender must have gathered a lot of information about my personal life."

"I received one more bouquet a few days ago. I was on the sets when the spot boy came running to me with a bouquet in hand. This one also was huge and had a tag saying, 'Have a pleasant journey, S'. How did anyone know that I was headed for Nashik the same day for my friend's wedding? I am wondering who the sender is?" Daljit says.

Isn't she feeling insecure given that she is living in a new city and is new in the industry? She says, "No, I am not insecure. I feel that sending roses is a sweet and harmless gesture. And it is not that he is making any crank calls or harassing me. But I only wish he acknowledges himself."

Reportedly, Daljit was so gripped by the mystery of Mr. S that she started suspecting all her co-actors whose names begin with the alphabet S; from Surbhi Tiwari to Suhasini Mulay to Shaleen Bhanot and even producer Anuj Saxena!

"No, I wasn't suspecting them; I was just pulling their leg when I asked them if they were behind this pranks," she says defensively.

But on a serious note, Daljit adds, "This is the first time that someone has sent me a bouquet. Although I was quite popular in the modeling circle, I never received any bouquets then! Kulvaddhu truly seems to have made me popular! Now, whenever my spot boy comes to me, I really wonder if he is bringing me a bouquet."

Boss under Bigg pressure

Driven to achieve a rise in TRPs, Sony's creative director Sikcand has allegedly been giving grief to his producers

Sapana Patil Poojary

A still from Kulvaddhu
After his spat with Ekta Kapoor and his subsequent move to Sony, the channel's senior creative director Sandiip Sikcand is in the news again. Reportedly, Sikcand has been giving a lot of grief to producers who are currently making serials for Sony. Industry insiders complain that he has been throwing his weight around.

A source in DJ's, a creative unit (makers of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye) says, "Sandiip is very interfering. He makes far too many changes in plots and ideas suggested by the creative teams. Sometimes he gets very adamant too and insists on having his way."

DJ's is not the only production house facing difficulties with Sandiip's behaviour. Sources say that even Maverick productions is facing a tough time. "Sandiip simply insists on changes. Some time back, Sandiip wanted Niyati's character in Kulvaddhu to develop into that of an ichchadhari nagin. Our creative team did not agree to this, and fireworks ensued," says our source.

A channel insider springs to Sikcand's defence and says, "Sandiip is a creative person. He is not in the wrong if he emphasises on quality and suggests certain changes. He too is under pressure. In the last week, no episode of a Sony serial has scored more than 2 in TRPs. Channel heads always have discussions with producers about the story tracks. It is normal to have disagreements but of late, there has been too much bad blood between him and the producers."

"Ever since Sandiip took over in August, there has been a lot of pressure on him. TRPs of on-going serials were dipping and the new ones failed to rise. Sandiip had to pay particular attention to Kaajjal, Bigg Boss and Kulvaddhu because these launched after he took over," adds another channel source.

It seems that the producers of Viruddh (a forthcoming show) and the Aamna Sharif-starrer (another forthcoming show) are miffed too. Sources say Sikcand's interference may well be the reason behind the delay plaguing these shows. Allegedly, Deeya Singh has been banned from attending any meeting.

Sandiip Sikcand
Of course, most people choose to respond tactfully when asked about Sikcand's interfering attitude. Rekha Vaid, vice-president of Maverick refused to comment. Creative producer Persis Sigenporia of DJ says, "We have had no problems with Sandiip. Our association is going great and we appreciate his suggestions."

What does the object of the controversy, Sikcand, have to say about this? "We are all doing our work. No producer has come to me to complain about problems that I supposedly create. Moreover what happens here, happens at other channels too. Sony is on an upswing," he says.

'I am a naughty brat'
Ansy Austin
Thursday, February 15, 2007 19:57 IST

Pageant princess

Daljit Kaur comes from an army background, a family of three sisters, one of whom is a captain in the army. In 2004, Daljit was crowned Miss Pune. Later in 2005, she was the runner up, both in the Navy Queen contest and the Maharashtra Queen contest.

After doing some episodes in 'Aahat' and 'CID', Daljit bagged the role in "Kulvaddhu' (Sony).

Niyati

"It has been a rocking experience working in 'Kulvaddhu'. Niyati is a vulnerable girl from Rajasthan who undergoes a drastic change in her journey," says Daljit.

Doesn't Kulvadhhu sound like yet another story of a small-town girl? Daljit retorts, "Every serial has a different protagonist and the story is not the same. This show is different because it has a Rajasthani background."

Camraderie

On the sets, Daljit is close to co-star Surbhi Tiwari (plays the bahu in 'Kulvaddhu'), with whom she also shares her make up-room.

"We are a huge gang of spoilt kids who pile together in one room and have a blast. We play games whenever we are free. We often have dinners together too," says Daljit referring to the cast of 'Kulvaddhu'.

Fan ardour

While shooting in Rajasthan, Daljit was surprised by a bouquet of flowers sent by a fan. "It was a heart-shaped bouquet of red roses. I'd like to meet this person someday," she says.

Bratty me

For someone who plays a quiet and a simple girl, the real Daljit is the opposite. "I am actually a naughty brat but that doesnt show on my face," she giggles. She further reveals, "I sketch a lot, especially pencil sketches. I also write my diary. However, I don't enjoy parties."

Lesson-wise

"I have learnt that in this industry you need an ample amount of patience and huge talent to get ahead," revelas Daljit. She adds, "Women in this industry are taken for granted. Especially during auditions, they are judged in a particular manner. I wish I could change these norms."

Saying that she finds actor Rani Mukherjee inspiring, Daljit elaborates, "Rani does a lot of home work. She can play both glamorous and de-glam roles with ease."

Why Rajesh Khera avoids the lift in his building

The kids in his compund don't let him take the lift unless he sprouts some dialogues for them. TV actors tell BT about some of their whackiest fans

BY GITA HARI

Fans are those species who are quintessential for the popularity of an actor but sometimes they can get so irritating, scary or pesky that they become a bane to the star. Recently, Daljit Kaur of Sony's Kulvaddhu
became a victim of this fan madness, when she started recieving bouquets from an anonymous person. Let's hear it from some of our teletube stars about their whacky, scary or funny experiences.
Two women from UK got hold of Rahil Azam's number and kept calling him and saying crazy things. "Then I avoided taking their calls. Once my man Friday received it by mistake and they took my address from him. They came down to Mumbai and to my house but fortunately, I was in the building compound when I heard them enquiring about me. I signaled the watchman from far to say I did not live in this building and they went away," says Rahil." Essaying a vamp's role has its disadvantage as Arzoo Govitrikar discovered when she went abroad for a show with Kanchi Kaul while she was doing Sony's Ek Ladki Anjaani Si. Both of them went shopping and found a bunch of ladies ogling at them and remarking, 'Dekho apne souten (Ananya) ke saath ghoomti hai,' referring to their on-screen relationship. Another vamp is Anchal Dwivedi, Kaveri of Saat Phere, who has viewers wanting to slap her and have her thrown out of the house in the serial. In keeping with his philanderous character in the same serial, Ashish Kapoor had housemaids refusing to work in his house suspecting his character. Another villain is Shaleen Bhanot, Karan of Saat Phere who had a bad experience in London. Recounting the incident, he says, "Once when I was at a London pub, four or five Indian families including women who were a little high recognised me as the villain in the serial. They insisted that I drink and dance with them. I had wine to appease them since I am a teetotaler but had a tough time getting away from there." The impish Monaz Mewawala has an interesting anecdote though she loves every bit of it, "Last Valentine's Day, I kept receiving bouquets of red roses every hour from a guy who used to SMS me earlier. And then when he found I did not respond to his feelings, he had no other go but to stop hounding me."
Even kids can be quite pesky as Rajesh Khera found after he started playing the flamboyant role of Maddy in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin. He relates, "The kids in my building would not let me take the lift until I uttered my dialogues or spoke in the typical Maddy drawl." Fans can even copy your style which happened to Snigdha Akolkar when she played Shyamlie in Hare Kanch Ki Choodiyan, "Girls from my hometown Akola would identify with me and had their hair styled like Shyamlie." Munisha Khatwani encountered a fan in a traffic constable as she reveals, "Once I drove without a license and this cop recognised me from Vaidehi. He took me to the police station on the pretext of penalising me and called his entire family. He then shot my pictures with them and took my autograph before letting me go." Quite a whacky fan this!
