"There's a hidden agenda behind the axeing of Kulvaddhu " - Anuj Saxena

It was hardly three months ago when Sony Entertainment Television was tomtomming its new show Kulvaddhu as the biggest thing to happen to TV. And that it would help it crawl back up the TRP charts. The publicity blitz that surrounded it made actor turned first time TV producer Anuj Saxena believe that Kulvaddhu would get all the support a show needs to become a winner.

But that was not to be. On 6 March Saxena got a big jolt when he was abruptly informed that his show would be axed. And he had two weeks to wrap it up.

Tellychakkar.com Editor Seema Pherwanicaught up with Anuj who had enough reason to be upset. He was pretty forthright in the freewheeling interview. Excerpts:

Did Sony's decision to axe your show, Kulvaddhu come as a shock to you?
I really don't know. I think we gave it the best shot from our side. Kulvaddhu was commissioned by the channel, they liked the concept. We tried to go beyond the original idea but looks like something somewhere just didn't work for them. At the end of the day they are the channel and we are the production house. I must admit that it was quite surprising the way it happened. We've been given just two weeks to wrap up the show which is rare.

What disturbs you the most?
The way the channel informed us. A colleague of mine had gone for a casual channel meeting, when she was told that the show has been called off. At the end of the day, I am the producer, so the least I can expect that they inform me directly. I've been associated with Sony for a long time and this industry is really a small place. I don't know what will happen in the future. But it's definitely not the end of the road.

Does this demotivate you since Kulvaddhu was your first show?
Yes, it's quite a dampener, I however choose to be philosophical about it. Let me state that Kulvaddhu wasn't doing so badly, even in terms of its TRPs as compared to some of the other shows. Looks like it's probably a hidden agenda, but then I don't want to fight with anybody. It's not the end of the world. I've got enough future projects to look forward to. I am not upset. Let's hope something new will happen and people will move on.

What do you think really went wrong? Was the concept mishandled or did you mishandle people and egos?

I am saying nobody is perfect. I always tell my team that there can only be one leader. If five creative people come together there will always be creative options; but it's always the captain of the ship who takes the call. There can't be two people and in this case because I am a new producer, I let the channel take all the decisions.

You started the story in one direction and the channel took it in another direction? Is that true? Or was it the demands of the show?
My story was about a girl becoming a widow. But somewhere along the line, there were too many changes and maybe because I am a first time producer, I succumbed to the pressures. I decided to follow what the channel people said, because I wanted to take the show forward. But, I don't know whether that has worked in my favour or no. In retrospect maybe it didn't work. And that's why I got the axe. There is a lesson to be learned, I will be better prepared next time and take a firm stand.

But aren't you taking up the axing issue with anybody?
They've just sent me a letter. I will have a meeting with them as I would like to know the actual reason. But frankly, I don't want to continue with the show even if I am given an extension. It will only make life more miserable for everybody. There's negativity and uncertainty about what will happen next. I prefer not to work in such an atmosphere.

Do you regret the fact that you didn't start on a smaller scale?
(Laughs) I think that's my biggest problem. I am too ambitious and I have too many dreams in life. That's what my father tells me, start small and then expand. But then all the big producers have failed sometime in their life. So, this doesn't deter people.

Does your image work against you?
Sometimes my image works for me and at other times it works against me?.me, my background, because of who I am and what I am. It's a double edge sword. I keep telling my Maverick staff that my biggest asset is Anuj Saxena and my biggest hurdle is also Anuj Saxena. I've always lived by my rules which are unpalatable to a lot of people.
I didn't really need to be an actor or turn producer. But there' a creative need in me which pushed me to do these things. I am a successful actor on TV today which some people didn't expect.

You were the face of Sony?
Was I? Now I have started doubting that. It was a nice feeling till it lasted. Now there are too many people on the scene.

In which direction do you see the content game moving?
I think today it's a power game and it's all about money. I tell my staff, 'money walks bullshit talks'. Our economy is growing at such a pace that things go the way of the bigger and better. Only production houses with muscle power and who can provide continuous software will go far. From the business point of view, your net worth is your share price.

What's next on Maverick's agenda?
We have a couple of concepts in the pipeline, my first film going on the floor and my first play set to be launched soon. The idea is to build Maverick as a brand. I have worked hard to build the company. All the money that I have earned as an actor has been put into Maverick.

What kind of losses have you incurred?
I wouldn't like to go into the details. But yes, obviously I have incurred a huge loss. I had a very expensive starcast, lavish sets and I got the best people in the market. But then I believe doing things in style. My motto is 'do it in style or else don't do it at all.' Also, now Idon't have to shoot pilots and prove my production values to other channels anymore.
I am also looking at it as a business setback. Most of the times channels do rehabilitate producers. I am however mentally prepared for anything, I will be happy if they chip in or else I will take it in my stride.

So now will you turn into a kanjoos producer?
(Laughs)I think that's my biggest mistake. I've spent more than what the channel was giving me; in fact almost double. Most expensive starcast, best lights, best technicians because I don't believe in doing a cut and paste job.

Do you have any other show in the pipeline?
I was hoping that one more show would go on air while Kulvaddhu was on. But looks like this is destiny. It's been twenty years since I am doing business and I've learned to handle these things. Every time I stumble and fall, I've only risen higher.

What other genres are you looking at?
We've almost 10 new ideas in the pipeline. I want to do different and entertaining work. In television, there' s no mantra for success; a show might click or might not. I will continue to pitch and make presentations. It might take six days or even six years. I have a great team and financially my company can take setbacks, so as a producer that works in my favour.

Q Like most new entries in daily soaps does your character in Kulvaddhu also come from abroad?
Yes, Jhanvi has come from America. She studied there with Shourya, is in love with him and wants to marry him. His marriage to Niyati, his childhood friend, is a sham. It happens in a moment of crisis in the Rathor family. Jhanvi is Shourya's real love and even Niyati knows about this. She promises Jhanvi that she will tell the truth to everyone about her fake marriage and help Jhanvi get married to Shourya.

Q Is Jhanvi a grey character?
No, she is not a grey character. Not at the moment, at least. She is obviously jealous and feels cheated. She is now waiting for Niyati to tell the truth so that she can marry Shourya.

Q Is it a love triangle?
It's an important character. Jhanvi is part of practically every scene because she will try her best to get her love back from Niyati. I really don't know the character's graph because in daily soaps nothing is known beyond a week. But it's for sure that the character will stay on for a long time. I also don't know whether a love triangle is in store. Who knows, if the TRPs come in a love triangle, then so be it.

Q As an actor how satisfying is a crime thriller like CID to do?
Well, in a crime thriller most of the time actors end up asking questions to the suspects and accused. There is not much scope to perform given the limitations of the show. But once in a while we do get our personal tracks going where I get to perform my own little bit.

Q Your last serial was Kahani... why did you quit the show?
Kahani was my first show and it made me popular as Monalika. It was a grey character who was influenced and used by Pallavi against Parvati bhabhi. The character did not end but after one and half years Monalika gradually strayed into insignificance with the entry of other characters and new tracks. Since I didn't have much to do in the serial I parted ways on an amicable note.

Q What did you do during your long break from TV?
I got into anchoring live stage shows. I toured with Sonu Nigam abroad and hosted all his shows. I also anchored Steel giant Lakshmi Mittal's niece's wedding party in Bali. I had a great time and realised that life is not all about shooting from morning to night. It was great fun and it paid me very well.

Q Better than acting?
Oh yeah, there is real good money in anchoring stage shows and other events. Even for a television anchor there is lot of money as compared to the time spent. In fact, now I am really looking forward to anchoring TV shows.

Q What compelled you to sacrifice your studies for acting?
I knew what I wanted to do in life. Since I wasn't going to be a doctor or engineer I didn't have to study that hard to clear my exam. Of course I did struggle to get through my papers but I completed my graduation while doing Kahani. The show came my way at the right time.

'This is not the end of the world'

Actor Anuj Saxena, whose first show on TV as producer is being axed barely three months after it started, speaks to BT

ROSHNI K OLIVERA

Kulvaddhu, your first show as TV producer, is being axed. What went wrong?
From my side, nothing! As a producer I did everything possible to give the channel the best possible — cast, crew, story, production values and more. But I guess that it was not enough for them. It is the channel's personal decision to axe the show. And unfortunately, I am surprised they did not have the courtesy to inform me directly, even as a matter of protocol. I think I deserved that at least. Some junior accounts person in the channel casually mentioned to my VP Operations that they were pulling the show off the air..... in two weeks! Well, it's their call at the end of the day.
The TRPs of the show were low...
False! The TRPs were as low or as high as any of their other shows or of the channel as a whole. And in fact, as per the latest ratings, the TRPs had increased. I guess the channel had no other plausible reason to give so this was the best one. I can name other shows which have been running for more that a year having lesser ratings than my show and shows launched after mine that have even to get some visibility! So all this claim of low TRPs is utter bullshit!
Do you still want to produce TV serials?
Of course! This is not the end of the world. Just because one show goes off air does not mean that my company closes shop! My film Dulha Mil Gaya which Viveck is producing and I am presenting goes on the floor next week. We are U pitching more shows to other channels, I am doing an international collaboration and a lot more. I've just started...
Is it far more relaxing to just be an actor than get into production?
They are both different. And I am a businessman first. Acting is my passion and something I will never leave. Media and entertainment is big business today, and if correctly handled, it's a great business opportunity. I love both. Acting gives me my creative satisfaction and business gives me the power and the money. Can't give up any of them.

Acting, producing, handling your family business etc... aren't you doing too many things at one time?
So I have been told repeatedly, especially by my father and brother. Maybe...I don't know! But till you try, you never know. My problem is that I am very ambitious. Sometimes it works in my favour, sometimes it doesn't. But then that's part of the game.

Where does the energy come from?
From God, from my belief that I am here to be different, to do different things, to make a difference, and to leave behind a legacy! And most of all, because I owe it to my parents to make them proud of me.

Down but not out!

Anuj Saxena bounces back with a German show The Dream Ship after Kulvaddhu capsized due to poor ratings.

Anuj Saxena

Anuj Saxena's Maverick Productions is set to return to television after the Kulvaddhu debacle. The production house is producing the Indian series for a weekly popular show (which has been on air for the past two decades in Europe) named The Dream Ship. The production house has roped in Mihir Mishra as the lead besides Preeti Mehra, while the rest of the cast will be finalized soon.

Anuj, who is in Pattaya currently on work, says, "The venture came through a friend who has been in touch for some time now. It's a long running show in Europe like The Bold and the Beautiful. It's about a ship that docks at various places all over the world. So the German production house approached us to handle the Indian line of production."

This is the third time Mihir will play a surgeon on television. Mihir says, "I play an Indian guy who has a German girlfriend and wants to leave Germany to return to India. His German girlfriend does not live in India and the conflict arises because of the cultural difference."

The production house is set to shoot in Udaipur in April with a huge German and Indian crew. So how did the production house zero in on Mihir Mishra and Preeti Mehra to play the lead? "The show will be a romantic story revolving around a doctor in a cruise liner. We thought Mihir fitted the character of a rich, affluent Brahmin boy. Preeti has an innocent, girl-next-door look which the character needs. We're keeping the identity of the German girl who has a very important role under wraps for now," points out Bhavna Shresht, Creative Head of Maverick Productions.

Though, Anuj hasn't taken the news of the premature demise of Kulvaddhu too well. He says, "I am definitely not happy with what has happened but ultimately it's the channel's call. But the channel should have had the courtesy to inform me and it has been very undiplomatically handled. I have moved on and there's a lot happening besides my current venture. This is just the beginning."

Sony turns to 'Star bahu' to revive prime time

Indiantelevision.com Team

(12 March 2007 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Amidst reports of its declining fortunes and speculation that chief creative head Sandiip Sickand may have been asked to put in his papers, SET announced the launch of its prime time soap 'Viruddh'. The show will air from 26 March, Monday to Thursday at 9:30 pm replacing Anuj Saxena's maiden production 'Kulvaddhu', which was unceremoniously axed to make way for this magnum opus.

'Viruddh' will be Smriti Irani led Ugraya Entertainment's second production venture. The show has been produced jointly by Smriti Irani and Aditya Birla group's media arm Applause Entertainment for Sony. Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman on Star Plus, the debut venture for the production house didn't fare well with its viewers.

Making way for the new show, the channel has rescheduled Kaajal at the 8:30 pm slot. Says Sickand, "You do take chances with new production houses and new shows. Unfortunately Kulvadhu didn't work for us. But with Smriti Irani and a host of other power packed performers like Vikram Gokhale, Sushant Singh and Achint Kaul we are hoping that Sony's prime time will pick up.We have already covered the 10 to 11 pm slot."

Sony has spruced up this slot with Durgesh Nandini and Jeete hai Jiske Liye. While the channel heads insist that the shows have been getting a good response, there has been huge concern over its drop in ratings and falling behind Sahara One. This had given rise to rumours of Sickand being asked to 'perform or leave'.

Rubbishing these rumours, SET business head Albert Almeida said, "The last time I checked Sandiip is very much a part of the team."

Speaking on the line up of daily programmes Almeida said, "We start our daily soap line up with Kaajal at 8:30 pm where we have more of the small town and metro audiences (1 lakh +), our prime time soaps like Viruddh would see an intersection of both metro and urban viewers. Durgesh Nandini at 10 pm again sees a peak in small town audiences who leave us post 10:30 pm. The idea has been to grab an audience share across the board, especially the urban viewer in prime time. For the time being, we are concentrating on fiction."

On consciously moving away from the successful K-serial mode he added, "We did taste success with a progressive show like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi and Kkusum. Even the soaps within the tried and tested formula are seeing a decline so why try something which is on its way out."

Viruddh spans two generations involved in a power play of relationships set against the backdrop of a powerful media house.

Actor producer Smriti Irani who considers producing shows a bigger challenge than acting in them also hinted at new shows in the pipeline although she refused to divulge details.

Sony's take on Kayamath

A lot has been written about why Sony's Kulvuddhu was axed. But here's what a channel head honcho had to say "There's really no conspiracy here. It's just that after working two months on the show, we realized that the story wasn't moving the way we wanted it to. And the lead protagonist Niyati didn't really fit into our channel profile."

So, which way should Sony's fiction programming be moving? Well, here goes, "We clearly want to differentiate out programming for the young, aspirational women who want to go out there and achieve something for themselves. So, we're not looking at a typical housewife, so a Kkusum or a Jassi clearly fits our bill."

Well, well so looks like the lead protagonist Niyata was actually going in the Viruddh direction.

Shaleen might enter Jeete Hain!

Shaleen Bhanaut is petrified of playing of negative roles. Yet, we continue to see him as Karan, the wife-beater in Zee's Saat Phere, and Agni in Sony's Kulvaddhu.

And now the buzz goes that Shaleen has been offered a role in Jeeta Hai n Jiske Liye.

Confirming the news, the actor says, "Yes, I have been offered a role in Jeete Hain? but I am not exactly aware of the character." This is because Shaleen is hard put for time, as he reveals, "Now that Kulvaddhu is winding up, we have been shooting round the clock for it. I was to meet the producers, Tony and Deeya Singh, today, but I got a call from Maverick to report for shooting. So, I am busy with that for now."

In Kulvaddhu, he is essaying the part of Agni, who limps like Sanjay Dutt in Saajan but has negative shades to it. One thing that Shaleen is clear about is, "The role in any other serial that I take up should be as good as if not better than Agni. In fact I would like to do something bigger and interesting and difficult as Agni." As Agni, though he had less dialogues to deliver, he displayed emotions through his facial expressions, which received a lot of appreciation from the audience."

Another interesting fact that Shaleen revealed to us is that he's a businessman cum actor. He is into importing printing machineries and also has a family business of publishing.

Well, way to go!

Kulvaddhu goes off air after just three months!

Kulvaddhu is being pulled off air today after being on for only three months. The serial, produced by Anuj Saxena, will be replaced by Thode Khushi, Thode Gham and the slot left open by this move will be filled by Smriti Irani's Virrudh. The production house says that it is completely channel's decision to pull off the show.

The stars of Kulvaddhu give us their reaction to this decision:

Shourya (Sachin Sharma)
"It's not nice. I'm feeling bad and sad about it. Everything was excellent - production, star cast but in the end whatever happens, it happens for good. If the show is going off the air then no one feels good about it. I'm going to miss this unit and it was more like family to me. We never have to make any special efforts for interacting with each other. It is like more of personal loss than professional loss for me."

"In Sindoor as well my character went into the jail. So now I don't want to take rest or a break and I'm looking forward for some script which is there for me. I'm ready to play negative as well as positive role. Soon I'll start working for one them."

Antra Singh Rathod (Kitu Gidwani)
"It is very sad to hear this news. I'm going to miss the entire cast and crew. It was fun during shoot. We used have blast. We were like family and we used to play game so I'm going to miss that very much. The production house was very fantastic and I never worked with such a classy man like Anuj. He is very dignified to his work. Offers are there for plays and as well as for shows, but nothing is finalized yet."

Agni (Shaleen Bhanaut)
"It's very sad. I'm very much emotionally attached with this show because of my character. This character was one of the best characters of the television I have ever seen. Everybody says that we were like family but seriously we used to have lunch together and lot of fun. I'm feeling bad for Anuj. He is very good producer."

"I'm going to miss the mails and appreciation I used to get for this role. I want to concentrate on my last episode as I want viewers to miss it later. But you have to move on in your life. I haven't thought about what I am going to do after the show will go off air. Lots of offers are there but I haven't signed anything as yet."

Janhavi (Mansi Verma)
"I'm so shocked. Track, stars and everything was so good, but I don't know why it is going off the air. They should at least give six months to every serial to settle down. I'm very upset because they have given a very short time to us. It was very rare combination of nice producer and nice stars. There are no offers for serial right now, so I want to concentrate on my live shows for which I do anchoring."
