Chapter Forty seven...

gulshan ka quaarobaar chale...

Dedicated to all of you..n our undying love for ashni...

IT was early morning when dr ashutosh awoke and his hand reached out for nidhi..but she seemed missing..ashutosh moved his hand as if to hug her..but the duvet was limp with her absence..he opened his eyes...and the terse reality came to his mind...where was nidhi..he immiediately stepped into the toilet..ws she getting sick??morning sickness??no she wasn't there..he went out to look in the kitchen..she was missing..kaka seemed to have gone to get mulk eggs n veggies...but where was nidhi..ashutosh shouted"nidhi...nidhi"as he came into the lawn..blooming with sweet peas n dahlias that baba n nidhi had planted...he heaved a sigh of relief..as he saw her sitting and hoeing the chrysanthemums..as baba watered the sweet peas..ashutosh almost rushed in..n held nidhi up.."hey..dont sit on your haunches..you d ..."he held back biting his lip..as nidhi looked into his eyes..half dazed..half shocked..he held her ..as baba coughed..n ashutosh withdrew as baba asked"kyun beta..karne de use gardening..pasand hai..dekh humara veeraan lawn kitna hara bhara ho gaya..kitte sundar phool khilein hain..sab nidhi ke mehnat se.."ashutosh kept quiet..as nidhi moved away quietly and said.."main baba ke liye breakfast lagwati hoon..

Aap chai lenge"??ashu..looked at her for a moment and said.."bus green tea..phir col verma ke yahaan jaana hai..ready ho jata hoon"!!nidhi nodded n walked in..

As baba looked at ashutosh and pointed to the magenta dahlias and said"dekh to..zara khurpi kar inme...main paani dalta hoon..dhyaan se ..nidhi ki mehnat ..uska pyaar hain yeh phool"!!as a gew minutes later both the father n son got up and washed their hands..as baba said in his characteristic way"thoda phoolon se pyaar karna seekh..kai baar veerane ki itni aadat ho jaati hai..kaaton mein daaman aisa phuns jaata hai..ki phoolon aur kaliyon se darr sa lagne lagta hai..."!!ashutosh kept quiet as he walked in ..followed by baba..

Nidhi served halwa n pakore ..baba's favourite on weekends..as baba rubbed his hands in delight...and asked"beta dahi hai kya"??and nidhi came smiling.."leejiye ..main janti hoon aapko pakori dahi achchi lagti hai"and as baba pushed a pakori into nidhi's mouth..ashutosh entered ..dressed immaculately in his steel grey tweed n worsted grey pants..looking rather grim..as baba joked"kyun bhai..ab itni udaasi kyun??ab colonel thode hi rok sakta hai nidhi ko..."!!and ashutosh smiled as he took his green tea ..n looked at nidhi..."kuch khana nahi hai..tumhe...milk or??"nidhi didn't reply..just said"taiyyar hoke aayi hoon..."and ashutosh's gaze trailed her...as baba's was fixed at his face..trying to read the tension in his eyes...

"Chaliye ..main ready hoon..."!!said nidhi as she stood in a cream n pale churidaar kurta "sweater pehno..its quite cold"nidhi nodded and pulled out her home sweater a worn out brown ...ashutosh kept quiet..nidhi liked dressing up decently..but it seemed today she was greatly distracted..he knew where n why!!

He started the car as she sat ..silently..her fingers fidgeting with the ends of her dupatta..till he stopped the car at Ramashrey and got down...asking"dadi bua ko kya pasand hai..."??n she replied"kachori..samose"!and he returned a few minutes later loaded with stuff...as nidhi said"chaliye bhi..."and he nodded..trying to hold her fingers..but she withdrew her hand ..n playedor rather pulled the button of her sweater...

"Aagayi..nidhi...bua..."and dadi bua came almost running to hug her granddaughter n then held on to dr ashutosh. ."baitho daktar..kaise ho..aur tu bata..itni kamzor kyun lag rahi hai tu...kya baat hui.."but nidhi was saved by the arrival of Solankis ..dr ranganath and anji..who had a gliw of motherhood ...but seemed a trifle agitayed as dr Ranganath held her hand over the stairs...

Nidhi hugged anji..as Shyama aunty blessed her n said"tab teri MD kaisi chal rahi hai??mbbs mei to tu padhi nahi..ab mD mei kya haal hai"??and col verma laughed as he said"ab to bachna mushkil hai..dr ashutosh ka discipline jo hai"!!and all laughed...as cs said"daktar sahib..kitna saamaan le aaye hain..."!!and ashutosh smiled and said with a lil hesitation "dadi bua aapki pasand ka hai..sab kuch"!!and dadi bua smiled patting his arm.."aaree daktar ab to tu hi meri pasand ka ho gaya hai bete.."!!

As the family sat for breakfast anji took nidhi inside.."chal guppe maarenge.."ashutosh raised his eyebrow"kuch kha to lo..."but nidhi was gone...as dadi bua laughed"bachpan se yehi haal hai..in dono ka...wahi nashta bhejti hoon..

Ruk thoda gup karne de dono ko...and ashutosh gulped...knowing nidhi should wat...n also wondering what would she be feeling...would she be sharing all woth anji...cv held ashutosh's hand and asked"kuch samasya hai kya dr ashutosh "??

Dr ashutosh kept quiet but col verma could probably sense something was amiss...but dadi bua was in over drive trying to feed all she could to the daamaad she once detested but now admired..As ashutosh reminded "woh..nidhi anji ka nashta...i mean anji should have meals on proper time..."!!and shyamaji nodded as she arranged a tray n called cs "sarkar yeh tray le jaiye to..zara baby log ke liye"and as he took the tray..dr ashutosh looked at Dr Ranganath "how is anji keeping doc"??before Ranganath could reply..Solanki saheb spoke"oh she is fine..bus Ranga ko trouble karti hai..aurShyama mujhe daant ti hai ki i have spoilt her..i tell u doc ashutosh. .betiyaan baap ki weakness hoti hain..but imust say dr Ranganath is fabulous..10/10 to him..."dr Ranganath smiled and asked "sir..subah subah beer ki jagah vodka to nahi pee li"??and all roaredin laughter...as cs appeared with the tray..saying"beeiji ne kaha serious baat ho rahi hai..tum jaao'"!!dr ashutosh got up.."letme see...nashta ker lein phir karen jitni baatein karni hain"!and as he walked to nidhi's room..Solanki sahed cried"aapki aur Ranga ki buraai kar rahi hongi dono.."!!

"Tu bata..khush nahi hai abhi bhi..i mean haven't u fallen in love with ur baby..aren't u awaiting him..or ger..excited nahi hai..ki woh kaisa hoga...boy or girl...tere jaisa ya dr Ranganath jaisa"??it was an excited nidhi asking anji who seemed a lil preoccupied. ."jaanti hai nidhi...i am like a surrogate mother...main dr Ranganath ka sapna paal rahi hoon..apne andar..bcoz i love him..n he is crazy about the baby...but personally i am not excited...i have just accepted it..but maine clear ker diya hai..ki paalengi mummy ya unki maa..aur i really want it to be a boy so there is no pressure for another kid..tu meri saas ko nahi jaanti..u are so lucky..no saas"!!and anji laughed..

Dr Ashutosh was about to enter the room..but something stopped him..n he stood behind the curtains..listening to the conversation...

Anji asked nidhi"achcha nidhi tu bata..agar tu preggy ho jati abhi..agar jeejs press karte ki this is the right time for pregnancy..and abhi teri MD bhi hai..to tu kya karti.."??nidhi kept quiet and walked to the window to look at the sun teying unsuccessfully to peep out from behind the fog..

Ashutosh held his breath..as nidhi spoke"jo sach ho hi nahi sakta uss per kya baat karein...i amean unhe meri MD ki bahut fiqr hai.."anji interrupted "aur tujhe mummy mummy khelna hai??right..oh my stupid nidhi...its awful to be pregnant..its my 3 month from today..itni care ..intne restrictions. .aur dekhna..2 months mein bump dikhega..i d look yuccky..chii"!!nidhi did not look back..but spokewith a strange pacified voice.."agar main expect kar rahi hoti..to MD aur pregnancy dono sambhal leti..each moment..hur pal ka ehsaas apne zehan..apni aatma ne sanjo leti...anji..mera baby..."nidhi stopped..removing her hand from her belly ..which she had placed inadvertently "had i been pregnant..her din main unke aur nazdeeq mehsoos karti..hum dono ki aankhein ek khwaab bunti..saath saath..."

Anji had suddenly become quiet as she stood behind her friend..realising something was amiss...as dr ashutosh stood out..feeling Nidhi's agony...

Anji asked"achcha tell me ..you are v keen about a baby...because..."nidhi completed it"yes...i am keen...per tu nahi samjhegi..koi nahi samjhega..woh bhi nahi samjhenge..main ne khoya tha apni maa ko..main ne mehsoos ki hai unki kami her saans her pal..aur haan main chahungi apne baby ko her woh pal hur woh lamha dena jo mujhe nahi mila..apni mahroomiyat ko poora hote dekhoongi..ussme.

Uske saath baatein karna..uske liye raaton ko jagna..uski nanhi nahi ungliyon se khelna..uski aankhon mei uske papa ka aks dhoondna..usse school leke jaana...haan anji..maine yeh sab miss kiyya hai bahut...maa ke bina ..pal to gayi main..koi kami bhi nahi rahi..baba the dadi bua thi..per maa ki jagah...koi nahi le sakta ...koi nahi.."and suddenly breaking off mid way she turned and walked out even as Anji stopped her..but she walked out of the room..in a hurry..eiping her tears...and bumped syraight into that familiar wall like chest..falling but being held by those strong arms...sainyaan...

Dr ashutosh held her...his eyes very deep ..n serious...

He held her..n brought her to the living room...with an arm around her shoulder...and giving her one lingering look ...he said"i have to tell you something...something very very important. ...Nidhi is pregnant.."and there was thunderous applause..as col verma hugged him..solankiji shook hands..dadi bua ran around for laddoos...n nidhi just stood there gazing at those eyes...trying to fathom the reason for the announcement. .for the acceptance. ..

"Suddenly kya hua...aap to itne serious the...aaj discuss karne waale they...phir sabko kyun..."??asked a visibly excited nidhi..in the car..Dr ashutosh smiled and explained "maine tumhari aur anji ki baatein suni...main jaanta tha yoy were keen for the baby...but i always felt..n still do..MD first..bcoz bachchon ke sath PG karna is not easy..per if this is what you want..its fine with me..i d always support you..aur tum jaanti ho tumhari marzi mere liye sabse zyaada zuroori hai...so be happy.."and held her fingers lightly...but nidhi looked at him..his face had deep lines of worry..concern...or was it disappointment??"aap khush nahi hain?you dont want this baby?afterall aapka bhi to hai.."ashutosh smiled...n added "offcourse its my baby...and i d love him ...or her..but yes ..maine socha tha ki..."nidhi clutched his hand.."meri MD ho jaayegi..aap chinta nahi keejiye abhi to second month has just begun..aur MD complete home mein gain 6 months ...i d just be 7 months preggy..i d take the exam...i d top dekhiyega aap"!!ashutosh shook his head"nidhi idhi...be sensible...MD is a lot of hardwork..itne wards..itni padhai ..long hours ..aur 7 months mein..tum theek se chal bhi nahi paaogi...exams kaise dogi"!!nidhi countered"arre pregnancy mein ladies drive karti hain..job karti hain..physucal kabour karti hain..to kya main MD bhi nahi kar sakti..."??dr ashutosh parked the car..as their home had come..nidhi got down excited...like a child..and asked"baba ko..."and ashutosh nodded...

"Arre beta yeh kya ..pair kyun choo rahi hai tu"??nidhi blushed...as baba looked at her and then laughed..."ach ha..to ab khilone laane padenge mujhe...aur woh mujhe kahega "dada..!!baba sunte sunte bore ho gaya hoon..."and then drawing nidhi close he said"beta..tu ne aaj mujhe..iss ghar ko..iss mathur khaandaan ko sabse badi khushi di hai...god bless you"!!and then as nidhi went in..he hugged ashutosh ...bu then asked"ashu..tu khush nahi lag raha...baat kya hai beta...tu nahi chahta..yeh baby"??ashutosh shook his head"no baba ..itts just ki ..ek taraf nidhi ki umr..uski MD..aur doosri taraf uski khushi..uske khwaab..baba;aap jaante hain main nidhi se 18 saal bada hoon...mera use sirf beintihaan pyaar karna hi kaafi nahi..i need to be responsible for her..uska future.."!baba stopped ashutosh "yeh baby tum dono ja future hoga...uski hansi tere sab aansoo ponch degi..uski kilkaariyaan teri veeran raaton ki yaadein mita dengi..beta woh aisa phool..aisa gul hoga jo iss ghar ka..iss baagh ka mustakbil hi badal dega...na aahu..itna soch nahi..kabhi kabhi dimag se zyaada dil ki sun ni chahiye...aur maine kaha tha na gulon se pyaar karna seekh..kaanton ko kyun thaame khada hai??beta nidhi ki aankhon mei dekh ..zindagi bula rahi hai tujhe...jaa...beta jaa..kaanton mei daaman mat uljha..apni bagiya ke pehle phool ka intezaar kar.."and a contemplative ashutosh went in...while baba in his delight called kaka n said"heera man...pata hai..tera ashu..baap banne wala hai..aur uski soorat to dekh..gadha kahin ka"!!and kaka smiled"dr sahib...ashu ko jaante to hain aap..apne ateet ki parchaaiyon se ghora rehta hai..."!!baba smiled n said"tum dekhna herra man..mera pota aisa sooraj jaisa damkega ki sab parchaiyyan mit jaayengi...aur ab mere liye tum banao chai..."and then as he sopped the adrak wali chai...baba closed his eyes...visualising a lil cute child playing in his arms... n he sang...

"Gulon mei rang bhare..baade naubahaar chale..

Chale bhi aao ki gulshan ka quaarobaar chale..."!!

Next update...about how ashu has an internal tussle...nidhi meets the gynaec...n how does ashu finally fall in love with the baby...

Chapter Forty eight...

heart break.. !

"Nidhi...are you ok"??it was a concerned dr ashutosh looking at an exuberant nidhi,smiling in her dark blue churidaar kurta n steel grey coat with a hood!!"delhiye..aaj aapka colour combination pehan liya maine..blue n grey.."and then sitting close to him ..she held his tees n said"aur theek kyun nahi hongi??i am just pregnant..not sick !!dekhiye..ur baby doesn't trouble me at all...feel kariye na.."and she held ashutosh's hand putting it on her belly..Ashutosh looked into her eyes ..brimming with joy ..he got up..n kissed her on the forehead and holding nidhi he whispered "hey nidhi...i feel we must meet a gynaec..its already been 6 weeks..i am worried ..you d need to undergo a great many tests..i cant take any risk when it comes to u"!nidhi put her head on his chest and then surprised him with a kiss on the lips and spoke "chinta nahi kariye...i am fine..aur ab uthiye..mujhe college jaana hai..aapka naashta laga diya hai..and i have eaten..ab aapka wait nahi ker sakti..subah mei i feel very hungry..chaliye..leejiye aapka sweater..suit shirt..n tie..aur main chali...bye.."!dr ashutosh held her hand n asked"aur check up..."??nidhi smiled.."aap decide kariye..kisko consult karna hai..i am fine with everything..jo aap chaahein"!

And she was gone...as ashutosh raised himself to the bedrest and tried to inhale the presence of nidhi..her presence lingered...and dr ashutosh had a deep look in his eyes as he took his cell and dialled..."hello...Sudhir.."!

"Morning dr nidhi..howw ..err..how are you now"??it was dr Bhagat..asking nidhi a lil awkwardly..and nidhi felt a lil embarrassed as she said"i am fine sir..ready for work.."dr Bhagat smiled and gave a thumbs up sign!!

As nidhi entered the group of her friends ..there were welcome smiles as Hema asked"what was the boss asking.."??nidhi giggled n whispered "kuch nahi...wanted to know my well being..."!!and as Hema raised her eyebrow ..nidhi nodded"yess...6 weeks"!!and Hema squealed with delight..almost bringing the entire class to turn to them..as she clapped n announced"guys..its a gr8 news...humaari friend..yaani dr nidhi is pregnant..so its going to be party time during lunch..hip hip hurrah!!!"and everyone clapped...as Akshay seemed a lil lost before he was nudged by Ali who said"dont forget..she is the dean's wife...mrs hardstone"!!and Akshay clapped slowly!!

"Sister..can you plz leave the files and go...plz ..n shut the door"!!it was dr ashutosh shouting at sister Francis as she seemed shocked at this unexpected burst from the dean who had begun to famously soften up after his marriage with nidhi..but today certainly his old Hardstone avatar was back...

Ashutosh took off his coat..put it around the chair as his hands caressed the coat..recalling how nidhi had worn it once..ut then lines of worry emerged and he slumped into his chair...trying to analyse..trying to assess the tumult of his emotions..what was the problem..??nidhi was delighted with the pregnancy ..why couldnt he be??was it his worry for nidhi's budding career??or was it his own entanglement with his unhappy childhood??or was it simply this ..he was not ready for a new relationship..such an important one!!

This morning..when nidhi had put his hand on her abdomen...why could he not feel the baby??all he could feel was nidhi's softness that his lips had kissed many times...The baby was his..his own flesh n blood ..then what was holding him back??was it just fear of new bonds..or was he so selfish that he could not bear to share nidhi with anyone..not even their own baby!!Ashutosh sighed as he closed his eyes ...and nidhi's sweet face floated in front of his eyes...but he felt a familiar touch on his shoulder...yes it was Mallika..dr Mallika. .his friend ...n also his confidant at one point of time..he felt strangely relieved. .n agitated..almost simultaneously. ..mallika had been the only constant in his otherwise shifting sands of life. .n yet he could never forget her distaste for nidhi n how she had made her throw nidhi out of KGH...n yet Ashutosh could never get himself to hate Mallika..He knew she would be able to help him understand himself..if only ge could share with her...but what if she already knew??mallika knew him so well...afterall they had travelled the lonely path..with no one else at the horizon...till nidhi came along..suddenly like a monsoon shower in a dreary desert!!

Dr Ashutosh opened his eyes...n straightened himself "yes mallika bolo.."!he said trying to keep his voice calm!she looked at him...and exclaimed"ashutosh..sab theek to hai na??have the two of you fought..."but then she looked at him..the softness in his eyes even at the mention of nidhi...it had to ve..."so...Dr nidhi is pregnant..isn't she"??and ashutosh nodded...mallika smiled..and looked at him"to..itna pareshaan kyun ho??time to celebrate i guess...tumhari tanhai..tumhara akelapan..tumhari udaasi sab door ho jaayenge.."ashutosh worked a smile...n mallika gulped her tears..as she patted him n for once he did not flinch.."ashutosh. .this had to happen..n you have to accept it..she is a nirmal..ordinary girl..uske khwaab bhi saadharan hi honge..i mean..woh tumhari tarah nahi soch sakti..na usne akelapan dekha hai..na insecurity..to uske liye naye rishte banana mushkil nahi hoga...aur baba to bahut khush honge...buss tum shayad khoya mehsoos karoge inn rishton ki bheed mein...per zimmedar to tum khud hi ho..."!!ashutosh took a deep breath as he spoke.."mallika..main nidhi ke lhwaab poore karna chahta hoon...per shayad abhi main taiyyar nahi hoon..iss rishte..iss zimmedari ke liye...main nidhi se..is baby se poora insaaf nahi kar paaoon shayad. ..n i hate that ..."Dr mallika camouflaged the flicker of joy in her eyes as she looked at ashutosh "then is she ready for an abortion...

Have u tried to convince her"??ashutosh stopped mallika"arrey no way..she is overjoyed. .she loves the baby...and i can't. .main usse uski aankhon ki chamak..uske honton ki muskuraahat nahi cheen sakta...i guess i would have to ready myself... ."!!mallika stopped ..measured her words n said"haan...aur iss daur mei main humesha tumhare saath hoon..always..n take care of nidhi...she d be expecting a lot of pampering..."!!and as dr ashutosh gave a wry smile..dr mallika walked out ..quickening her steps towards her own cabin...n as she entered...the dam of her anger seemed to burst...as she threw the files...n uttered a silent scream..."no ..no nidhi ...no..this is not fair..just not fair..."!!!

"Whoooshhh...i am hungry ..."it was the declaration of a 6 week pregnant dr nidhi as she returned from her college n opened the fridge...baba emerged out of no where n admired her making a big sandwich for herself...bread butter tomato..n mixture with hot n sweet sauce"as she took a big bite ..he tousled hwr hair n she was surprised..""arrey aap...baba..sorry chai laaoon..."!!baba held her by the shoulders n made her sit.."pehle tu kha beta..chai main banwata hoon..iss samay tujhe nutrition ki zuroorat hai...agar teri dadi bua ko pata chal gaya..ki hum tera khayal nahi rakhte to le jaayengi waapas tujhe"and as nidhi laughed n offered a bite of her sandwich to baba...he asked "betajo bhi jee karta hai kehna mujhse...ashu ko tu janti hai...thoda..."nidhi stopped ..n looked at baba..."baba..aap dekhiyega..iske aae se woh ek dum warm up ho jaayenge...i am sure..kjelenge ..khaayenge..bhaagenge iske saath...ach ha baba bachpan mei yeh sporty they kya"??baba turned sombre..."beta..jab mere paas aaya..koi 11 baras ka tha..muskurana to jaise jaanta hi nahi tha...sach kahoon to isse khul ke hanste muskuraye tere sath hi dekha hai..mann lagta tha bus music aur padhai mein...aur ..""...AUR HARE CHANE KI METHI MUTHIYAAN MEIN"!!completed kaka as he placed the dish on the table..n nidhi smacked her lips.."para nahi kyun aaj mujhe bhi bahut mann kar raha hai yeh khane ka"!!and then blushing ran into her room...

Dr ashutosh wished baba as he called for tea ...n as the duo sat..baba asked"ashu nidhi ka check up...

"??he noddd "jee baba ..i have taken an appointment with Sudhir..he is the best.aise she seems fine..parson shaam jaana hai..lets see"!!baba patted him n said"beta dhyaan rakh uska..bahut kaam karti hai...college..ghar..."ashu bit his lip..but dod not say anything..as he got up..n went into the bedroom..expecting nidhi to be teading her fairy tales or watching TV ..but he was surprised to find her fast asleep..all cuddled up..he smiled as he covered her with a duvet..n looked at her face..relaxed n happy..a smile playing on her lips..she was probably dreaming...ashutosh caressed her hair lightly as he went into change..taking the night suit she had kept for him..

Probably his presence awoke her...for when he came out she was trying to get up..ashutosh almost rushed..held her "kya hua..dizzy ho..weakness"??nidhi giggled"kuch nahi..chappal dhoondh rahi thi..paoon mei thand lagti hai "!! Dr ashutosh relaxed n bent to get her slippers from under the bed.."tum apni slippers bachchon ki tarah idhar udhar kyun chodti ho..."??nidhi pouted n said"kyunki main aisi hi hoon!!"and ashutosh sighed...with a smile on his lips!!

"Nidhi aaj zara KGH aajana shaam ko..kych samples lene hain tumhare..dr Sudhir wants us to come with the reports..tomorrow evening.."nidhi nodded as she munched her aaloo paratha n gulped her milk..."i thought u hated milk"said ashutosh..."i hate it still...but baby ke liye to peena padega..waise dr sahib aapko khada rehna chahiye mere liye doodh lekar..after all i am your pregnant wife"!!and she kissed him on the lips...ashutosh couldnt hold himself from responding and then separated saying"chalo...i too have a tough case today..."but nidhi stood brooding..like a kid...and the famous neurosurgeon stopped and asked ..with a finger under her chin...she just hugged him n said"aap itna door door kyun..."and nidhi's eyes seemed to dwell up with tears...Ashutosh held her tenderly...was he being too harsh??he spoke softly.."you are carrying now..its not going to be the same..i mean we need to ask the dr...i might just hurt you..."!nidhi nodded as he wiped her tears ..n holding her face in his hands kissed her on the forehead...

""Ashutosh ..you cannot remove the tumor in this condition..she is 4 months pregnant.."said dr mallika as they walked from ward no.2 .after examining a pregnant woman who had a tumor near the occipital lobe that was pressing her optic nerve and surgery was essential..Ashutosh stopped as he confronted the young man...and then told mallika"you get along..well discuss this in the evening.."!and she nodded!

Her demeanour outwardly calm ..but within her a volcano seemed to be bursting...the whole night she had been trying to gulp the fact that nidhi was pregnant..pregnant with ashutosh's baby...oh how she had cried..she could have goven up her life to have that feel...she was not a woman who would let her emotions show...she walked on with firm steps...

It was at 6 p.m. that nidhi parked her red benz at KGH and stepped in ..taking a deep breath of air that smelt of dr ashutosh...of the innumerable moments together...yes!!nidhi decided almost at the spur of the moment..as she ran to ashutosh's cabin..

Dr ashutosh was discussing the tumor case with mallika when nidhi entered...mallika wished her..ashu smiled n said"10 mins wait karo..ek important case pe decision lena hai.."nidhi nodded n said"baahar wait karoon..."ashu was about to nod but dr mallika interrupted 'arre sit..its an interesting case..tum bhi to dr ho..."!and they discussed..

"I also feel mallika aose mein surgery ho nahi sakti...she has to be saved n for that..its necessary ..:"mallika completed"yes its necessary she aborts..she cant risk her life for the sake of her baby..thats stupid"!nidhi gulped ...as ashutosh contd."i talked to her husband..he understands..is ready..i think go ahead tomorrow morning...but ..i wonder..."mallika interrupted"oh ashutosh..you ae a surgeon..try to understand patient ki life foetus ki life se zyaada important hai...n when she regains consciousness we d tell her...it was necessary..."ashutosh seemed to nod..as nidhi gulped hard"you mean the patient wouldnt know she is veing made to abort...that that...is not fair"!!mallika smiled kindly"nidhi..surgeons ko tough decisions lene padte hain..n its all for the patient...achcha bhai pehle congrats..."and she hugged nidhi...as nidhi felt v cold n lonely...probably vulnerable..

"Chalo..blood samples dene hain.."ashutosh smiled as nidhi walked numbly ...and as ashutosh himself took the syringe and drew the blood..writing the labels..he raised his eyebrow"dard hua"??nidhi was looking into space...as they walked she spoke"i dont wish to drive...aap car bhijwa deejiye..can we go together..

"??ashutosh gave her a keen look...n nodded but not before touching her throat"theek to ho..."and she mumbled something and waited for him to sign his files...ashutosh did give her a glance in between..he knew something was wrong...but what was it??

Suddenly dr mallika came in"all fixed up...tomorrow at 9.first i d do the clearing..abortion..then you can remove the tumor...ok"??ashutosh sighed as he nodded...and walked with nidhi...as he started the car..he tried holding her hand...she seemed cold...he looked at her...there were tears streaming down her face...ashutosh sighed"nidhi...nidhi...kya hua "??but she did not speak...and just as the car reached home...she rushed out ...n into her bedroom with a flustered ashutosh in pursuit...only to find her crying helplessly ...sprawled on the bed...hiccupps wrecking her frame n tears wetting her cheeks..Ashutosh sat trying to draw her into his arms..."jaan..."but she quaked..n spoke in a broken vouce"its not fair...you can't. .you can't kill her baby to save her...not fair...not fair.."and broke down...as ashutosh kept holding her..trying to pacify her tormented heart...why had they discussed the heart wrenching case in front of her. ..why???

Chapter Forty nine...

Ashutosh sat by nidhi on the bed putting his hand on her back..trying to calm her down..but her tears just wouldn't stop..finally he held her up..a little strongly..and spoke"nidhi..nidhi..look at me..plz dekho idhar..meri aankhon mein.Do u think..i am cruel n ruthless ?do u think i would make a patient abort if its not needed??soch ke dekho nidhi..she has a pulsating tumour. .if i dont remove it..she can die..and she is 14 weeks pregnant..in this condition how can i do cerebral surgery? ?tum hi batao..think like a doctor "nidhi was sitting and listening quite like a child ,being posed a tough question by a professor. .she just spoke in a small voice. .her frame still trembling"at least you can tell her..she would understand. ..u cant cheat on her..no thats unethical...nahi kariye waisa...plz dont do it..."and ashutosh hugged her tight..finally understanding..it was the pregnancy hormones that were making her so vulnerable ..he got up to get a towel and wiped her face..kissing her forehead..he said"chalo..nha lo..main chai banwata hoon..and main try karoonga..koi aur option about the patient...maybe take her into confidence ..ya try some other technique...have faith in me.."and nidhi nodded as she got up..a lil unsteady and ashutosh held her.."kya hua...theek ho tum"??and she just nodded and went into the toilet with her brown woollen gown...as dr ashutosh came out and was confronted by baba n armaan.."kya hua ashu..nidhi ro kyun rahi hai"??baba added"beta tujhe apna temper thoda to control krna hoga..uski condition ka to khayal ker.."ashutosh kept quiet..feeling almost criminal..but then spoke.sharing all that had happened..ending with"baba ab aap hi bataiye..you are a syrgeon urself"baba sighed"beta medically ..to we can discuss it later but emotionally speaking ..yeh sab nidhi ke saamne discuss karne ki zuroorat nahi thi..it was certainly not what the dr prescribed..aur Mallika to khud ek aurat hai..i expected more sensitivity from her...ab tu nidhi ko dekh..case raat mein discuss karte hain.."!ashutosh nodded as ge came in and saw nidhi lying on the bed in her gown.."kya hua jaan..chai nahi peeni"??nidhi shook her head.."na..i want to sleep..back hurt ker rahi hai thodi...its normal in pregnancy"!ashutosh smiled"jaanta hoon..itni gynae padhi hai maine bhi.."!!and he massaged her back...as her eyes drooped to close and he switched off the light ..covered ger with a duvet and came out..

It was a detailed 2 hr discussion with baba..both looking at the various dimensions of the tumour and baba explaining his point if view..of how a back cut through the cerebral peduncle could be quick n easy..and probably the pregnancy could continue...unless the patient had a miscarriage due to hormonal centres getting disturbed...

It was at 9 that ashutosh entered his bedroom to awaken nidhi..she was sleeping flat on her back..her hair open..and her tight hand protective on her tummy...did she feel threatened??thought Dr ashutosh as he gulped...n touched her cheek...she opened her eyes and got up..."arre raat ho gayi..'!ashutosh held her.."chalo khaane..dekho armaan bhi aa gaya waapas..wait ker raha hai"!!and nidhi nodded as she got up..n came out with ashutosh..with her family..her world waiting for her...

"Ashu...kal shaam hai na appointment nidhi ka...zara dhyaan se..aur sab doubts clear karwana ...aur beta nidhi..first appointment with the gynaec is v important...jo bhi mann mei apprehensions hon..pooch lena.."nidhi nodded as ashutosh observed how hungrily she was eating...n a faint smile came on his handsome features!!

"Chalo..i would drop you today..phie shaam ko dr Sudhir ke paas jaana hai..are you ready"??nidhi nodded as she wore her sandles and said "hmm..theek hai..bus naashta ker lein.."ashutosh nodded as they came to the dining table.."kaka bus green tea deejiye..surgery hai.."nidhi got up.."rukiye..ek sandwich to le leejiye..."and she returned with green tea n sandwiches. .while kaka got dahi and methi ke parathe for her..with a mug of milk..with bournvita..nidhi smiled..at her appetite..clearly the baby was growing..as she ate with relish..dr ashutosh was brooding..his brow furrowed...and then it suddenly cleared..as if he had reached a satisfactory conclusion to the problem..he wore his coat n looked at nidhi"ho gaya..."and nidhi gulped down the milk..coughing violently..in the process..as ashutosh quickly responded rubbing her back..n giving a lil water...as baba admonished"ashu..kha to lene diya ker bechari ko..."and he bit his lower lip..as nidhi took a deepbreath and both walked together ..dr ashutosh opening the door for her..settling her and then starting the car...as he dropped her at the college ..he looked at her..right into hr eyes n said "i would try my level best nidhi...but for me the patient is more important "nidhi nodded..holding his nimble fingers that had saved hundreds of lives..she said"thanx...jee"and walked away...

"No mallika...let me try..i think i can do..i have thought of another technique..and as it is..hiding from the patient is not a good idea at all...so i would talk to her...rather than cheat..."mallika looked up..rather surprised.."ashutosh..what is wrong??surgeons work on brains..not hearts "ashutosh gave an instant reply."mallika..human life can survive without a brain..but not without a heart "!and before she could ask anythi g he was gone..giving orders for the OT and walking into the cabin of the patient..

The young lady was sitting with her husband holding her hand..Dr ashutosh hated breaking the poignant moment..but he had to..."excuse me..."and he explained all the options he would try ..saying"i too..understand the agony..i too am an expectant dad...but your life is more important. .but believe me ..i would yry my best to save your baby too..however i cannot promise..I wanted to share this with you..because as a dr..i didn't wish to cheat on you.."the patient was quietly sobbing as her hubby held her..and as dr ashutosh turned..she said"thank you doc..thanks for not cheating on me...n God bless ..god bless your baby.."!ashutosh closed his eyes for a moment..as he went out to change for the OT..shutting everything else from his mind..

It was 6 hours later that dr ashutosh walked out of the OT..a satisfied smile on his face..for his efforts had succeeded..he had temoved the tumour completely and managed to save the baby too...the hormonal levels were almost normal..and so there seemed no danger to the baby..as he announced it to the husband..he just stood rooted...unable to grasp the joy..the bliss as dr ashutosh patted him n came to his cabin...removing his coat...he sat n closed his eyes...and as he heard the door open..he took his cell n whasapped nidhi"surgery done..all well..baby saved"and as he had a lingering smile ...dr mallika appeared followed by a ward boy carrying a tray with coffee n sandwiches..ashutosh sighed as he said "only coffee...i have loads of work..its already 4.30..."mallika frowned"kahi jaana hai:koi musical concert"??ashutosh smiled"no..nidhi ke gynaec se appointment hai...aur classical music to waise bhi nidhi enjoy nahi karti..."and mallika smiled..seeming jovial.."ab to waise bhi tumhe baby cries ke music ki aadat daal leni chahiye..."and ashutosh looked at her...his eyes had a hawk like look...when the cell rang.."yes Sudhir..i have got her reports...will bring them.."and then looking at mallika he said"now..may i work plz.."and she caught the chill in his voice...as she walked to her cabin..her fists clenched...surely nidhi could not captivate ashutosh for long...she would not let that happen...infact this baby itself would turn ashutosh away from nidhi...as mallika had a malicious smile on her face. ..

"Hi Sudhir...this is Nidhi..my wife..dr nidhi.."introduced a slightly nervous ashutosh. .as Sudhir laughed"we have met..tumhare reception mein..so..."ashutosh nodded and searched for words.."actually as i told you...nidhi is pregnant..6 weeks..and i want..we want..that you have a look at her.."!Sudhir smiled as he sat"waah ots nice to see the world famous neurosurgeon nervous!!aisa hi hota hai..when u are about to become a dad"!!and nidhi giggled..

"So nidhi..how do u feel..i mean morning sickness..."nidhi replied to all the questions that dr Sudhir asked..about her work schedule..her energy levels..her new symptoms every day..and then he turned to dr Ashutosh "is sex life fine..comfortable "??and nidhi blushed purple as..Sudhir called the nurse and told her "plz ready the patient for check up..i am coming..."!and turned to ashutosh again..."well we have not indulged in any sex after we came to know ..but before that it was all smooth..v smooth"Sudhir frowned..."you scared...or she..."??ashutosh smiled"na..i wanted your clearance before. .she might just get hurt..by.."Sudhir nodded "hmm..let me check..will you not come..most fathers do thee days..."Dr ashutosh shook his head"no..i am fine..i d be just outside..call me if you need me"!! Dr Sudhir nodded..he had known dr ashutosh for long..

"So nidhi..can we start..."??nidhi nodded but her eyes were searching for dr ashutosh...he wasnt around..was he scared...or just not interested...she suddenly felt tears stinging her eyes..

Ashutosh was walking up and down the corridor in tension...

"So you seem to be doing fine..next time you d be able to hear your baby's heart beat..first scan 4 weeks from now..and i am giving you a diet chart as well..get ready and come "!he ended..and nidhi thanked him..she too had been nervous..but the attitude of dr Sudhir was fabulous..just the right balance of professionalism and a personal touch..and the way he had called her"beta"had made nidhi feel very relaxed...

As Sudhir emerged..ashutosh stopped in his tracks..."how is she..i mean hows everything. .."Sudhir patted him and hot him to hus cabin.."she is doing fine..i have seen her reports too.all is well..except her vit D ..i am writing pills..if that doesnt help..we d try injections. .but otherwise she n the baby r doing fine..and yes..she was looking for you during the check up..."ashutosh winced...as he clenched his fingers..nidhi entered..looking a lil jaded..was she tired ..or sore??gynae check ups were never a pleasure...ashutosh should have been there..he bit her lip..as she sat..n Sudhir looked at both .."everything is fine. .continuewith your college..do everything. .you just need to take care of your food..have a weight chart..take these vitamins...n yes ashutosh..conjugal life can be normal..atleast for the next 4 months..and now see you after 4 weeks...just be happy and tension free..you have a history of high bp n panic attacks..that must be avoided..ok"??and nidhi nodded as ashutosh listened intently...as Sudhir added"take this.."he picked up a sample"coco butter..apply on the expanding abdomen..the skin will remain healthy and wouldnt be scratchy..right now you are.."!Ashutosh bit his tongue again..why hadnt he seen this??he should have known..he was not only a senior dr but also the senior partner...but till now he had been numb n shocked at the sudden pregnancy...for the first time..today he realised that the baby was indeed a reality..n the dact that nidhi was expecting..was changing her in many ways..other than her appetite..."chalein"??it was a tired nidhi tapping his hand...n he was shaken out of his thoughts...as he shook hands with Sudhir..who smiled n advised"just relax n enjoy impending fatherhood..n yes pamper her.."!!ashutosh smiled as he walked to catch up with nidhi...

"Lunch..pizza"??he aaked..as if trying to compensate for not coming in for check up..she smiled n said"guilty feel kar rahe hain..andar nahi aaye they"!!and as he lowered his eyes..at being read so perfectly..nidhi smiled n said"no...ghar chaliye..i had a really long day...and yes..thank you..for saving the patient's baby...she must be sooo happy"!ashutosh suddenly felt lighter. ..and held her fingers..entwining them with his...

"Ashu kya kaha dr ne...bata beta"??it was baba..the expectant grandfather in overdrive..and as ashutosh explained the diet chart ...baba looked at nidhi"kal se..zyada nutrition. ..dekh vit deficiency can be dangerous "and then seeing her fagged out...he said'chalo jaldi se kha lo..aaram karo..ek dum thaki lag rahi hai beta tu..."

It was after an hour that nidi took off her gown to lie in her cotton nightie ...a pink one with white lace ..n buttons in front...and as she lay..knowing dr ashutosh will come after finishing his readings..she lay...n was fast asleep within moments...

Ashutosh could not focus on the book..his mind rather his heart was still in the examination room..where ge should have gone ..but he hadnt...why not??was it silly embarrassment or lack of concern..he was confused..he closed his book and came to the bed..nidhi lay on her back..these days she rarely slept side ways..why??he had never bothered to ask her...ashutosh gulped..as he looked at his sleeping treasure..looking prettier than ever..her hand as always upon her abdomen..her baby..their baby..the baby ashutosh had not really felt till today...how must she gave felt during the check up...lonely??her eyes must have searched for him...but she had not complained..she understood him...perfectly..

Ashutosh got up and opened the medicine drawer to come back with the coca butter that Sudhir had given..quietly ..delicately he unbottoned nidhi's nightie..as she seemed to smile and then winced..was she hurting...he gulped as he saw the red rashes on her just slight v slight baby bump...or was he imagining...he shook his head n took a lil coco butter and began to rub it on nidhi's abdomen..rubbing gently on the redness ..as his fingers suddenly began to feel ..feel his baby..his child..their child..he rubbed with greater gentleness...he had not realised he could be so gentle..his fingers worked but his mind..rather his heart imagined the tiny life that lay nestled within..growing...very soon..nidhi would begin to grow..and he would hear the heart beats of his baby..see the first scan..ohhh!!!he could hardly wait..as he tenderly touched the area again...n then bent down to plant a soft wet kiss...a kiss for their baby..the baby he seemed to not want..a baby he had neglected..but today..the touch..the look of fatigue on nidhi's face had finally removed the dust of apprehensions from his heart...now it was a father's heart..beating fast n free awaiting his lil one..oh what feel it d be to hold him in his arms!!would it be a son..or a daughter??he wondered n smiled..it was still 8 months away...as he kissed nidhi's abdomen once more and covered her...n then looked at her face...his nidhi..so gentle..so nice..n so understanding. .she deserved all his care n attention...he lowered his lips to touch her's. .and she mumbled in her sleep..as he put his left arm under her...and then turning sideways..nestled her closer...n put his right palm on her abdomen...feeling and protecting their baby...as nidhi seemed to smile...and shifted closer ...and ashutosh closed his eyes in sheer bliss...

"Lo..have ur tea.."it was dr Ashutosh who awoke his preggy wife..and as she opened her drowsy eyes..she was a lil surprised to find two cups..normally they shared their tea or coffee..she tried to raise her eyebrow like her hubby ..n he laughed n held her nose"tumhare liye..doodh mei tea bag daala tha..meri normal chai hai..i know u dont like simple plain milk.."nidhi smiled n sipped her tea..rather milk..and then looking at the click got up and tried to rush through the act of taking out hers n dr ashutosh's clothes for the day..he held her..almost possessively n said"aaraam se..bhoolo nahi..you are carrying my baby"!nidhi smiled naughtily.."kya baat hai..bada pyaar aa raha hai baby pe??"ashutosh sighed n then holding her..he said"hmm..yeh pyaar bahut pehle aa jaana chaiye tha.."and nidhi siught his lips..but he just pecked her n got down to his knees to kiss her belly..where in lay the proof of their love..7 weeks into the journey of life..

"Nidhi..tum drive karogi ya...mai drop karoon"it was Ashutosh who asked this as nidhi packed their lunch boxes n gave a big tiffin n juice to Armaan..who patted her n said"ab kaka ko karne diya ker..ya mai manage ker loonga..strain nahi le ..nidhi"!nidhi smiled n said"armaanji..khol ke dekhiye tab nahi kahenge ye sab"!!armaan opened the tiffin to find hot Maggi n he jumped to hug nidhi.."wow..thanx nidhi..tu bhi to kha.."but dr Ashutosh interrupted "sorry..no maggi

Its not safe"and Armaan could only make a scowl..as nidhi handed over the medicines to baba n bade a bye..as Ashutosh opened the door of her car..n said"zara aaraam se ..speed brakers pe..do t rush..late hogi to main jeh doonga Bhagat se.."!nidhi pouted"no need..main pahunch jaaoo gi time pe.."!!and she drove off as her hubby returned to arrange his files ..and as he looked at the room around..he smiled to himself..just an year back..this room n house were so desolate..n now it seemed music had begun to play..nidhi..with her smile..her naughtiness..her playful nature..n now very soon..amin in about 8 months..a bundle of joy..Ashutosh closed his eyes trying to imagine..what it d be like ..to hear the cries of the baby..to change his diapers..to carry him..Ashutosh smiled at his day dreams..n straightened his tie..as he emerged and said"baba main chalta hoon...din mein surgery hai..aap apna mobile saath rakhiyega..agar nidhi ko koi dikkat ho to..."!baba nodded " dont worry beta..per woh theek feel kar rahi hai na"??Ashutosh blushed as he nodded"jee..koi morning nausea bhi nahi hai..she s fine..bus dekhta hoon MD se cope up kar pati hai ya nahi??"Baba had a furrowed brow as he waved to his son n said"we would cross the bridges when we come to them.."and Ashutosh left for his other love KGH..his dream project..

"Sir aaj thoda jaldi jaana chahta hoon..Anji ka bahut mann hai dinner aur movie ka..n aap to jante hain uska mood..."Dr ashutosh smiled n nodded"yes you may..but Anji hai kaisi..i mean how s she keeping"??dr Ranganath looked away..n then spoke slowly"sir waise to theek hai...per tantrums bahut thriw karti hai..but i guess ..i have to bear it..waise bhi pregnancy is a time to be pampered. .i guess"and ge bowed out...but his words kept resonating in the neurosurgeon 's mind..."pregnancy is a time to be pampered "...what had he done to pamper Nidhi??she was in the 8 week now...would she be gaving cravings..mood swings??Ashutosh toyed with his cell n then whasapped ..

The door opened and in walked dr Mallika"woh Ashutosh. .aisa hai..ki there is a conference of two days in London. .so i was thinking ki hum dono cgalein..it d really help us ..we d meet..."dr Ashutosh cut her short with a wave of his hand..and spoke sternly"Mallika..how can you even think..that I would leaveNidhi..aise mei n go to London??i mean thats simply ridiculous "!and turned to look at the scan ...Mallika knew there could be no further discussion..and she got up..Dr Ashutosh spoke without even looking at her"agar tum jaana chahti ho to jaao..i d recommend your name.."Dr Mallika replied"No..i wanted ki hum dono..

"!dr Ashutosh spoke curtly"sorry mallika thats not possible..n now let me concentrate "!

"Dr nidhi..have u examined the patients"??asked dr Bhagat..nidhi nodded"sir..just completed..i am filing my reports.just give me 20 mins plz"!!dr Bhagat mused"sure..err.by the way..did u have your lunch"??nidhi looked up a lil surprised..dr Bhagat..why was so concerned. .about her??"yes sir..i mean i have got my lunch..i d eat it after i file.."!dr Bhagat looked at her.."no..i feel in your situation you need to eat first..plz eat..then file the report..there is no emergency.."and he was gone...Nidhi pushed him out of her mind..yes his concern surprised more than touched her...she d better tell her husband about it... ."nidhi...would you like some milk"??it was Akshat..with his tiffin as he sat with nidhi ..nidhi was almost irritated..why did all these people have to bother about her..she had the only man with her..whom she wanted to be bothered...she smiled at Akshat n replied politely "thanks Akshat..i am fine..just want to complete my work..."Akshat didn't say anything..just looked at her and went back to the group...and Nidhi felt relieved...as she got back to her work..biting into her paratha roll n working...just then her cell buzzed..a whassap..she looked at it..and a wide smile came into her lovely eyes..the message was.."KAISI HO TUM"??..obviously it came from the only man she had ever loved...she quickly typed n sent a message"❤️..aapke dil mei hoon..mehfooz"!!and she went to meet dr Bhagat..

Dr Bhagat seemed to be brooding ..with his wallet in front of him...as nidhi entered..he put the wallet back n looked up..had he been looking at a photo??was there somebody in his life??...nidhi felt a lil embarrassed as she seemed to have disturbed his solitude...she explained the findings n report..n as Dr Bhagat nodded ..she asked if there was anything further..dr Bhagat was cold n withdrawn..n answered"sure..you may leave for the day..n my regards to sir"!nidhi was pleased. .yes even a reference to dr ashutosh got her eyes to twinkle...

She came to her car..and just as she sat..she felt hr back ache..she tried to curve..but then patted her tummy n drove off...she knew she d be just in time to make cuccumber n tomato sandwiches for her husband...and she hummed...and life seemed so very lovely...but could nidhi see beyond the turns..??

As dr Ashutosh drove through Hazrat ganj. .he pulled off at a florist..n bought a dozen lilies..he knew nidhi would love them...and just as he was getting back his eyes fell on the hot chaat being sold at Royal Cafe...and a smile came into his otherwise stern n serious eyes...eyes of dr Hardstone seemed to soften..as he thought of the young vivacious nidhi..his titli..the harbinger of colour in his lonely life...

"Nidhi...nidhi .."entered a perceptibly excited Ashutosh ..as baba and armaan smiled..at his new found charm..almost boyish..n armaan teased"doc hardstone..apki wife abhi sandwich bana ke ..fresh hone gayi hain..sorry..fresh ho ke sandwich fresh banaye..ab shaayad aapka wait ker rahi hain..aur yeh kya hai..mere liye.."??Dr ashutosh gave him a mock glare and handed him chaat.."uske liye bhi hai..sab nahi khaa jaana"!!

Ashutosh entered his bedroom to find nidhi studying ..rather making notings...he stood behind her..silently..but she sensed him and looked around...a wide grin coming into her eyes.."aa gaye aap...chaliye maine sandwiches banaye hain.."and as she got up..she just held her back n gasped...Dr ashutosh held her..his hand on her back "kya hua..has it begun to hurt..abhi se"??nidhi shook her head trying to delve worry from his eyes.."naa..bus it was a very long day today..."Ashutosh held her and said"chalo..tumhare liye chaat laaya hoon..aur ..aur.."and he took out the lilies from his bag.."ohhh wow..kitti sundar lilies ...aap jaante hain..mujhe.."he completed"hmmm jaanta hoon tumhe lilies pasand hain.."she kissed each flower and put them in a vase by the table and held his arm..as they stood for a moment..and nidhi kept looking into his eyes...till he dropped a peck on her forehead n got her outside...

As nidhi got sandwiches..Ashutosh requested kaka to get the tikki chaat for her..as armaan teased"dekh twri favourite chaat.."but as nidhi took a bite..she seemed nauseated n rushed in ..Ashutosh in pursuit..n she got sick over n over again..as he held her..n washed her face...she came out..rather was brought into the bedroom..n slumped onto the bed..."kych maann nahi..thodi der mein..."and ashutosh just caressed her hair n said"dont worry..u r tired..so jaao thoda..uske baad delhte hain..."nidhi closed her eyes...but then suddenly opened them and asked"suniye...aap mujhe..ek story suna sakte hain.."??Ashutosh was shocked.."story..u mean..."??"yes..a story

.i mean a fairy tale..i just love them..."ashutosh caressed her hair..as he said"sorry...but ..muje koi story yaad nahi aa rahi..."!!and nidhi smiled n held his hand..placing it on her belly she closed her eyes...and Ashutosh kept sitting for quite sometime ..before he covered her with a duvet and went out..

It was about an hour later that nidhi opened her eyes and found dr ashutosh working on his laptop..but as she yawned..he asked"bolo kya mann hai ..baahar chalogi drive pe"??and nidhi threw her duvet away..n hugged him 'chaliye na..mujhe kulfi khaane ka mann hai"!!

"Kulfi...??are u sure..tum to sweets like nahi karti..."??nidhi blushed.."haan..per ab man karta hai.."!!ashutosh caressed her tummy and asked softly"humger cravings"??ad nidhi blushed as she nodded.."jaante hain..agar spicy khane ka mann kare..to it means its a baby girl...aur agar meetha khane ka kare to..its a baby boy...so aap jante hain..."!ashu put a finger on her lips and said "yeh sex determination test kiss patho lab ne bataya"??and she blushed...

"Oh wow..i am just loving the kulfi...thank you.."and ashutosh looked at her..her lips covered with kulfi..as he pressed his index finger and thumb on the corner of the lips and nidhi felt herself shudder with immoderate desire...Dr Ashutosh held her fingers n said..."just a moment..abhi aaya..."and before she could respond he was gone...only to appear a few minutes later carrying a colourful volume of GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES...and spoke.."now a story every night..tum dono ke liye.tumhare...aur iske..."and his gaze travelled to where his baby lay...within the only woman he could ever love or desire...

"Story time..."??dr Ashutosh raised his eyebrow..as nidhi lay in bed..and just as he opened the book...she took off his specs...he looked at her..and kept the book away...as his hands touched her throat...and she murmured "ashutosh..."!!

As he disrobed her..she felt in her a sense of urgency..and she took his hand to her bosom..Ashutosh smiled..he..knew all she desired..and began to stroke her breasts..as his lips sought her ear lobes...he stopped for a moment...and opened the tops she was wearing..deliberately squeezing her earlobe...n she quivered as a hot wave gripped her..and his hands sensed it...as he began to explore her dark moist secrets..dripping for him..yearning for his touch..he put his finger to her core very tenderly..she almost screamed with desire...but her moanssoon after told him..what she wanted...and he kissed her navel..his lips kissing her belly..before his nails began to graze and his fingers explore her..she could not hide anything from him..he was examining each molecule of her...and as she bit her teeth into his shoulder...he k ew she could wait no longer..it was after innumerable pierces that got them to one climax after the other..that they lay ..in each other's arms...ashutosh feeling her abdomen..n then saying..."i can feel the baby bump..."and she blushed and hid her face in his bare chest..as he con ti ued caressing her ...his own passion rising again..and as he looked at her with concern..she smiled n whispered"you are not hurting me..."and he felt a momentary relaxation..before passion gripped him and he united with her..his teeth n tongue leaving a trail of love n desire on each square inch of her body...and she finally relaxed...aand so did he...atleast for the time being..

Nidhi blushed scarlet as his fingers still grazed her navel..teasing the tender skin. ..she turned away n said with a wide eyed innocence..."ab humari fairy tale..."and Ashutosh smiled as he wore his specs ..and took the book..turning to the first story..Rapunzel..he began...

"Long long ago..there lived a king..."and nidhi was listening to the soothing baritone of his voice and feeling the protection of his hand on her belly...the angel of sleep seemed to be drifting along...as her eyelids drooped...and she could feel her husband ..with specs n grey side burns..patting her ..n their baby...and she smiled ...a sweet smile that was like the rainbow of his love..with hues of desire..passion..care ..selflessness n a deep sense of care...that he ..dr Hardstone had for her...

Ashutosh smiled as he saw his wife fast asleep..he kept the book away..and took her into his arms...dreaming of their LOVELY future together...

At almost the same time..dr Bhagat sat looking at a big framed pucture of a pretty woman...as he whispered"Pooji...i wish you had the sensibility of dr nidhi..."!

Chapter Fifty one...

"Yes Sudhir she is keeping fine..managing her classes quite well.."it was dr Ashutosh talking to nidhi's gynaec over the phone ..and as Sudhir reminded him about the impending check up in a week's time,he smiled"yes i remember..5 january..we would be there.."and Dr Sudhir added just as Ashutosh was about to end the convo"by the way are yiu guys joining the IMA new years get away .."Ashutosh smiled in surprise as Sudhir described the venue..a river side resort about 180 km south of Lucknow and added "it would be a good change for dr nidhi.."Ashutosh nodded n said"lemme check my surgery schedules"!

Just as he was about to ring for dr Ranganath ,in walked Mallika.."kya baat hai Ashutosh.."??Ashutosh sighed and replied.."you know everything so you also must be knowing about the IMA event.."Mallika smiled"agar yeh compliment tha..to sir aankhon per..haan yeh dekho pics resort ki..it seems beautiful..chalo na chalte hain..2 din to kaam se sab chintaaon se chutkaara..offcourse Nidhi to..."ashutosh didnt seem to be listening..he was busy texting to some body and then within a few seconds a broad smile spread on his face...as he looked up and said"excuse me mallika.."and he walked out..knocking at Dr Ranganath's cabin..

"No sir ..anji and I wouldnt be coming because she is busy with preparations of a fashion show..and so ..she has already warned me not to disturb her..but aap jaaiye..i d manage everything here ..sir.enjoy yourself ..but i think dr mallika is also going.."Dr Ashutosh raised his infamous eyebrow and added"Dr Ranganath..mallika is free to do whatever she pleases to.."!and he retreated..leaving Dr Ranganath guessing the tenor of his lines!!

"Baba ..chaai lenge..nidhi ko to shayad abhi der lagegi aane mein"!it was a relaxed Ashutosh in his tracks and sweater sitting with baba as kaka got tea and added"nidhi beti ko badi der lag gayi aaj..."ashutosh nodded n explained to baba"baat hui thi meri dr Bhagat se..woh actually 2 din ke liye soch raha tha IMA ka plan hai..yehi..paas me to le jaaoon nidhi ko.."baba looked up smiling as Ashutosh continued"so he said he d give her some notes n all which she d miss in these two days..waise he s also going..."baba seemed a trifle worried.."per beta..ab i think..12 weeks hone wale hain.."Ashu corrected"11 baba..aur waise dr Sudhir bhi honge wahaan pe..plus she is keeping quite fine.."baba smiled"chal.achcha hai..kuch mann badlega..aur new years bhi to hai..bus khayal rakhna beta..nidhi hai to bachchi hi.."and a voice interrupted "kya baba..aap bhi..aap to meri side the"!!it was nidhi standing at the door as both the men were surprised and baba laughed n said"arrey yeh koi india Pakistan ki ladaai hai kya bhai ki side leni padegi"!!and all three laughed as nidhi said"bus abhi aayi nahaa ke..i am starving."!!and she went in..as Ashutosh called kaka n requested"kaka dinner laga deejiye plz.."kaka smiled "sab ready hai..bus nidhi beti daal khud chaunkegi..ussne mujhe woh kya kehte hain ..whassapp kiya tha"!!and Ashu was amazed ..as kaka smiled n showed his new cell "dekh nidhi beti laayi mere liye..aur mujhe whassap bhi sikhaya..aur dekh mere bhateeje ke no.bhi save ker diye..sach hum sabki kismat badal di iss ek bachchi ne...aur khaas ker ke teri Ashu beta"!!before dr Ashutosh could reply in delight ;nidhi called"suniye plz"and he rushed in..

She stood there in her gown..with sweaters lying on the floor.."plz zara utha deejiye ..i was pulling my cardigan aur yeh sab...i dont want to bend.."ashutosh smiled..softly..picked up and arranged all the sweaters n sat by her..putting his strong arms around her shoulders ..he said.."thak jaati ho..."and she leaned on his chest n yawned.."not really...per long day tha aaj..back dukhne lagti hai ..thodi ..and i feel so hungry...aapka bete ko kitna khana chahiye !!oh God"!!she giggeled as Ashutosh put a finger to her lips and said"shhh...you need all the nutrition. .chalo..khane ...haan tumhe dal mein..."and nidhi got up"haan chaunk lagana tha..lehsun wala..jaisa aapko pasand hai...i know i hated it but kya karoon aajkal wahi achcha lagta hai..iss naughty fellow ke chakker mein"!!and Ashutosh smiled as he tenderly put his lips to where their baby lay..soft snug..n secure ..

"Dr Bhagat hain to kaafi khadoos but aajkal kuch soften ho gaye hain..keeps asking about my health.."how are u dr nidhi..are you fine"!"..."i dont like it..somehow.."Dr ashutosh smiled as nidhi yawned n turned straight..on the bed.."aapko chinta nahi hoti..koi aapki biwi pe line maar raha hai..i feel"!!Ashutosh raised his eyebrow "chinta nahi hoti..bcoz poori duniya jaanti hai ki tum meri ho..sirf meri...and secondly ..aisa bahut luch hai jo tum nahi janti Bhagat ke baare mein..and u dont need to know..after all he s your dean..but be rest assured woh tumpe ..kya kaha "line maarna"!!haan to woh tumpe line nahi maar rahaa ..i know..aur i feel tum mujh pe rely ker sakti ho..kyun"??and nidhi blushed as he put his arm across her bosom..

"Achcha ek plan gai ..if you are interested..new years ka..IMA ne ..."and nidhi listened wide eyed..."wow..it d be so lovely...per baba ..yahaan akele..not fair.."!!Ashutosh felt a tug at his geart..how did this girl think if everyone? ?"dont worry.."he said"kaka ..armaan gai..aur 31 ko col verma ne invite kiya hai unhe ..so "nidhi pouted"ok..aajkal aapko col verma yani mere baba se zyaada bat hoti hain..kyun"??and ashutosh looked into her eyes "kyun na ho baatein..aakhir unki beti ko laaya hoon apni biwi banake..so i need to keep him posted about your welfare...aur haan kal after work ..we d both go there for dinner..unhone kaha hai..n yes maine unke liye yeh wrist watch order ki thi..aa gayi hai..achchi lagegi unhe "??ashutosh showed her the amazon packet that had arrived..n nidhi was speechless...a lovely antique look citizen watch..and then he pulled out another packet.."a shawl for dadi bua.."nidhi suddenly felt close to tears..and ashutosh saw her eyes cloud...he hugged her form n said"shhh.no rona...baby ki mummy ko sirf smile karna hai..ok"!!and nidhi closed her eyes...in thankfullness as she felt her husband's protective hand on her belly...and soon her nreathi g was rhythmic..she was fast asleep...as ashutosh kept gazing at her..thinking of the long lonely years he had spent without her or baba...n how suddenly spring had lit up his autumnal forest...he tenderly kissed her forehead and then covered themselves with a duvet..losing himself to the luxury of dreams...

Dr Bhagat packed his bag for the trip..and then finally put a small picture of Pooja...his Pooji ..his wife..Dr Pooja..who had chosen to walk out on him..three years after their marriage because ...because she had wanted to abort the baby that he so wanted...yes it had been a mistake..Pooja was still in her MD but then he was ready to help her...but she??headstrong..impetuous..n so mercurial...she had walked out on him..never looking back..and it was months later..after his fervent pleas that her paents had divulfed she was in New Zealand n wanted no contact with him...none if he loved her..he should homour this..."if he loved her..."??dr Bhagat sipped his whiskey..he had loved her each moment of these 10 years...he could bever forget her...nor the baby that she must hv aborted...He looked at ger pic..n whispered"Pooji...i wish..."and he looked away..smiling faintly at the thought of dr nidhi..he had warm regard for her maturity..her sense of balance...n each time he looked at her..he remembersed his Pooji...

"Beta garam kapde rakh liye hain na kaafi"??asked a concerned baba as Dr Ashutosh and nidhi emerged from the bedroom with two suit cases .Ashutosh pointed to the two suit cases"aap khud dekhiye..do raaton ke liye do suit case le jaa rahe hain!!sab rakh liya hai..dont worry.."and nidhi held baba's hand and said "baba medicines time pe..aur khana bhi..main phone karti rahoongi"!!Armaan who had just put the suit cases interrupted "sorry no calls plz..bhai new year mei hum bhi party mode mein hain..no disturbance plz"and then as nidhi gave a disarming smile..he hugged her..a combination of his friend..his sister..n simply his ashutosh's soul mate!!

Dr Ashutosh organised things n put a pillow below nidhi's feet as he started his BMW..his eyes asking her "theek ho"n her lips replying "jee"!!

It was a good two hours later that Ashutosh touched nidhi's shoulder n said"utho jaan..we are there.."!and nidhi smiled gleefully..as she said "aapne mujhe uthaya kyun nahi.."??and he replied"because you need rest..ab so li ho to u d feel fresh ..and ready for lunch"!!and he parked his car as nidhi got down ..a lil apprehensive. .but ashu was by her side holding her .."chalo..dont worry..you r getting up after long to thoda sa chakkar aayega..u d be fine soon..chalo.."and he guided her to the reception...where they ran into dr Sudhir his wife ..a few others n dr Mallika dressed in a lovely cream silk salwaar kurta..n looking dazed to see everyone welcome nidhi..as dr ashutosh stood quietly..his arm protectively around her waist!!..

Mallika pushed her tears ..n gulped..as she made her way towards them...

"So folks..just 3 more drs to come..so lets meet at dinner..and yes those who wish to go on a motor boat ride in the Ganges can register right now.."!it was the IMA Secretary dr Agrawal..but as nidhi smiled with joy..Ashutosh's eyes had a firm NO written in them..n she sighed ..as he whispered '"..lets have lunch.."and nidhi nodded..bidding bye to the drs all of whom wanted some time with their wives ..away from the busy routine..and Mallika cast a look at Ashutosh n nidhi sitting at a table overlooking the winding river..with thick mango trees around..she sighed..how she had yearned to come here with Ashutosh...it had been years since they had gone out ...together..."dr Mallika.."mallika looked around..finding nidhi waving her hand at her..and she walked towards them.."plz join us for lunch..aap akeli bore ho jayengi.."said nidhi..as mallika looked at Ashutosh who servednidhi n added"mallika is used to her own company.."and nidhi laughed..Mallika took a very small helping..as she saw ashutosh serve nidhi..encouraging her to eat and mallika intruded"bahut weight put on jar legi...nidhi.."Dr ashutosh gave a sharp look as he said"is haalat mein looks se zyaada nutrition ki care leni hai..i think you r forgetting my wife is pregnant"!mallika almost choked at "my wife"!!hiw she had waited for 12 long years for winning this address...but she never did...

Mallika bit her lip n tried to look positive.."ashutosh boating chaloge..yaad hai Oxford mein tum mujhe le haate they...woh long biat rides...woh hawa...it was just lovely nidhi..ashutosh ke baazuon mei bahut strength hai..thakte nahi the..."!!ashutosh looked at Mallika narrowing his eyes ...n corrected"jahaan tak mujhe yaad hai aisa ek hi boat trip tha..maybe tum kisi aur ke sath gayi ho"!!mallika almost list her cool..only to save herself from spilling out her feelings as Ashutosh stood up n said"now we would leave mallika..n yes aren't you going boating..??hum to obviously nahi jaa rahe because..nidhi is with the baby.."and a softness descrnded in his eyes as he held nidhi..his fingers grazing her waist...as she waved to mallika...who turned..n almost ran to ger room..to break into agonising sobs ...

"Oh hi dr nidhi..hullo sir..you guys naturally not going boating..."??it was dr Bhagat who had arrived late..and nidhi had looked at him a lil suspiciously only to be lovingly admonished by her hubby..Ashu said"we are having tea on the river fromt..if you are looking for company..find mallika..tum dono to batch mates bhi ho.."dr Bhagat smiled "well..better to be alone than with...arrey tum mallika..abhi tumhe hi yaad kar raha tha..chalo boating.."!!and a faint smile came on ashutosh's face at the sudden change of face of dr Bhagat!!he knew mallika was not liked by most ...bcoz of her possessive domineering ways..He almost sighed...as a friend he knew she gad positives..was a great dr..an abke administrator ..had looked after her brother...but it was that streak of posession that killed everything beautiful...ashutosh often came close to hating her..but could never do so...after all it was a long drawn friendship..it could not die so quick...inspite of...

Nidhi..where was she...Ashu looked around...only to find her sitting at a tabke ordering cutlets n tea..as he joined her..and both looked at the serene waters of the river..meandering undisturbed quite like their life...when suddenly a whizzz disturbed the waters

..as a motor boat passed ...n nidhi could see dr mallika's pallu...she suddenly shuddered...n ashutosh caught her "chalo..its cold..u r shivering.."and as they entered into the warmth of their room..he poured her a cup of coffee ..n sipped himself..

Nidhi was sleepy..she changed into her nightie ...and walked to the bed...just when her husband held her n pulled her to him...she awaited him to do ...but he was in no mood ..he just tucked her in bed..with a wet kiss that sent shudders...as his eyes soothed ger n he patted her cheek.."raat ko..."!!and nidhi smiled in anticipation..

Nidhi had worn a dark blue sari..silk with a dark mustard border and a deep necked blouse with full sleeves as ashutosh guided her to the dance floor ..himself a stunner in black suit...it was the new years eve...he held nidhi..recalling how awkward he had felt dancing with her the first time in Bombay...but today it was different..he knew ger inside out..each fragment..each fold of her skin had been touched n tasted by him...hence ge gad not hesitated when their name came out in the chits drawn for the couple dance...

The music was dlow..lilting ...as he held ger..his left gand spread wide on the bare flesh of her back..across the U of her blouse..and she had her hand firmly on his broad chest...as they swayed...n the lights dimmed..ashutosh pulled her closer..feeling her breasts harden to his chest...she could feel him harden..and almost quaked with desire...Ashutosh pulled her closer...and lo!!!

Dinner was served and nidhi almost turned away at the sight of paneer...Ashu..to the surprise of many almist hid ger face in his broad chest..n said"dont look at it..i d get some kheer .."and then as Sudhir smiled..he explained how sight of good made her sick...and sudhir laughed"hormones"!!Ashutosh got a bowl of kheer and then as he ate ..nidhi took spoonfulls of kheer...ravishing every bit...but suddenly she coughed loudly...n ashutosh was there ..giving her water...and spreading his protective hand on her tummy...caressing it just a bit...

Mallika could take it no longer...mumbling an excuse..she made her way..to her room...

"Idhar aao..."and nidhi stood in front of ashutosh..knowing fully well what was going to happen to her...he just looked at her...n as his fingers grazed her throat..they tugged at her nightie straps...n it was a heap at her feet...his fingers touched her marble bosom..and the tits seem to turn dark pink...she could feel a throbbing in her core...a yearning to be claimed ...but her hubby knew better...as he ..still fully dressed..just loosened his tie...and then caressed her tummy by the back of his hand...he could almost feel her urgency...

Mallika could almost feel the agony of their intimacy...it was as if nidhi had ravaged the sa rosanct temple of the relationship between her n ashutosh. ..no mallika could not bear it...she would ...

And as she clawed at the pilliw...and the feathers flew in the room...she stood alone facing the river...her eyes two burning coals...not ready to close..for the vision of ashutosh's hand on nidhi's pregnant belly haunted her..tormented her. ..

"Kya dekh rahi hain bua??dr ashutosh ki shawl"??it was col verma catching dadi bua unaware of his presence ..was touching n caressing the lovely beige pashmina that ashutosh n nidhi had got for her when they visited them before leaving for the IMA get away!She smiled n teased"teri ghadi bhi to sundar hai..dekh tabse pehan rakhi hai.."col verma laughed"arrey kyun na pehno..dr ashutosh ne itne pyaar..itni izzat se di hai..sach bua..dr ashutosh ko dekh ke ab lagta hai ..ki unki khilaafat karke humne bahut galti ki..."and bua smiled"theek keh raha hai..per ab ..beeti baat bisaariye..aage ki sudh le..ab to nidhi ke bachche ka swaagat karna hai..nana ban jaayega tu Yog"!!and both laughed as someone called out "verma...verma"it was solanki saheb!!

As cv n bua came out ..they welcomed Solanku n Shyama ..hugged them n wished new year..as CS got coffee n pakode and col verma said"humari anji kahaan hai"??Shyama looked the other way..while Solanki saheb answered.."aaj fashion show hai uska..busy hai..dr Ranganath aspataal gaye hain"!and then Shyama sighed n got up.."bhai saheb kuch theek bahi lag raha...anji to jaise apne ko quaid me mehsoos karti hai..samjha nahi pati main usse..."Solanki saheb added"hmmm sach kahoon to Ranganath se koi shikaayat nahi..buss anji hi ziddi hai..shayad mera hi dosh hai..."bua smiled n patted"chinta na kar..dekhna jab bachcha aayega to pyaar bhi ho jaayega usse..hume to uthane bhi nahi degi..tu dekhna Shyama"shyama blinked back her tears as she said"aapke muh me ghee shakker bua"!and then enquired"nidhi kaisi hai.parson jab aaiye thi..hum they nahi .."!col verma smiled a satisfied smile"ek dum theek hai..dr ashutosh le gaye hain..IMA get away ko..thoda relax karenge dono..bahut khayal rakhte hain..aur badi baat yeh ki poori aazaadi hai nidhi ko...sab cheez ki..raat ko noodle khaane ki bhi"!!and bua put her coffee down n squealed "arrey maggi se yaad aaya..aaj Rohan aa raha hai waapas America se...ohho..arre manhoos..kahaan gayaa"!!and the Verma house hold was abuzz with activity...n joy...

"Nidhi..uthoo...breakfast ko nahi jana..."??it was dr Ashutosh who had got ready in his khakis and greenish shirt with a brown pullover..and nidhi yawned as she blinked her eyes and nodded"good morning...uthti hoon..chai lenge"??he shook his head n said"no

.i have had..tumhare liye doodh rakha hai.."!nidhi smiled n got up...and almost slumped back holding her back..dr Ashutosh walked to her and held her waist as he sat by her.."kya hua...discomfort "??nidhi nodded n said"hmmm yahaan back ache hai..aaj zyaada hai..."dr Ashutosh looked worried as he rubbed her back..and caressed her hair softly ..asking her "Sudhir ko bulaaoon"??nidhi leaned onto his chest.."nahi ..3 din baad to milna hi hai..i am ok..yeh sab to thoda bahut chalta hai..come on aap itte serious nahi hoiye..i am fine..dekhiye.."!!and she stood up as she took the glass of milk and sipped it..her eyes brimming with dreams..but her face did have shades of pain ...

Ashutosh observed that..standing a lil far away..and then he walked to stand behind her..putting his arms around her..caressing her bump..he then put his hand to cup her face and patting her he said.."dont worry...main hoon na..humesha humesha.."!and nidhi put her hand on his as they felt the life they had created together...and then closed their eyes to imbibe the joy that they were experiencing!!

"Hi nidhi..kaisi ho..how are you..looking pale..tired"??it was the intelligent dr mallika who observed a slightly pale nidhi in a loose red n black suit with a phiran ..her lips a lil white..nidhi replied "just a lil back ache.."mallika looked at Ashutosh critically "see...you are making her over strain..she needed rest..not thus..."ashutosh looked at mallika..silencing her midway..n then looking at nidhi he said"come ..dhoop mei baitho ..i d get the breakfast..aaloo parantha??"and nidhi nodded..as mallika absorbed her jealousy and asked"ashutosh khush hain.."??and nidhi lost in ger dreams ..in her thoughts replied"khush??itna khush to kabhi dekha nahi unhe...and he is really pampering me to death..."mallika smiled with an effort..as the word resonated in her mind"death...death...death...could it be the salvation. .but whose n for whom???

Ashutosh arrived with a plate of hot aloo paratha n made nidhi comfortable..and then as he sat ..nidhi rolled a piece to feed him..but he held her hand and affectionately put it in her mouth..his eyes brimming with care n protection...

Mallika could just not bear it...no longer...not any more...

"Thoda tez chalaiye na...plz"!it was nidhi telling ashutosh who seemed to be enjoying the leisurely drive back home...he looked at her sharply..and asked"back ache hai??"and she kind of gasped"bus tired hoon baithe baithe..."he stopped the car n opened his seat belt to get down n come to her..."pehle batana chahiye tha na...lo i d recline the seat..now you can lie down...ok??better??ek ghanta lagega aur..."!and he came back n started the car..his left hand caressing nidhi..trying to reduce her discomfort...as a dr he could feel it was something other than pregnancy..may be a deficiency. .she had to be taken to Sudhir...tomorrow itself..Ashutosh drove in silence as nidhi seemed to have dozed into sleep..and ashutosh smiled as he remembered those says when she could just not sleep in the car!!how the baby was changing her..form..likes dislikes..he clasped her hand and brought it to his lips..and probably that brought hrr to waking up...and she yawned ..like a lil girl.."hmmm hungry "!!and ashutosh smiled as he said"kaka ko whasapp kar do kya khana hai..."!and then putting his hand on her bump he said"issko kya achcha lagta hai.."!!and a sunshine spread over nidhi's face..how fulfilling it was to see dr ashutosh feel for his child..his only blood connect..someone who d fill his world with joy n colours ..n in his words "another contendor for maggi noodles"!!

It was late that night when nidhi sat in his lap in her cream laced nightie ..enjoying the new heating that ge had got installed..n he cocooned her n said"i have taken an appointment with Sudhir for tomorrow..i feel blood profile karani hogi...lets find the reason for this back pain..abhi to its just 3 months..i feel if its getting tough to MD drop ker do...you can appear after an year or two.."nidhi held his bearded face in her hands n looking into his eyes said"three things...first..main theek hoon aur MD ker sakti hoon..

Second..aapki beard trim honi hai..aur..aur third...i need you to make love to me..."ashutosh smiled wryly..as he hugged her.."md delhte hain..dadhi trim ker loonga...aur making love..abhi??no..what you need is peaceful sleep...just what the doctor ordered!!chalo.."and he lifted her to bed..laying her gently and kissing her on the forehead...

Dr ashutosh stood by nidhi as dr Sudhir conducted the first ultra sound and as he silenced the nurse...the room seemed to fill with the heart beat of the baby...resonating through the probe ..and ashutosh stood mesmerised..looking at nidhi who gad her eyes closed..trying to absorb the moment..Sudhir got up and told nidhi to turn ..he examined the lower back and said"get ger..i d collect the blood reports"!

Ashutosh helped nidhi change...feeling a strange thrill ..a deep satisfaction in sharing all..things which ge had probably been embarrassed of..and as they walked to Sudhir's chamber ;many a drs n nurses looked at them..some with silent appreciation..dome with mocking scorn..but all they could see was the joy in each other's eyes...unconcerned about what the world had to say...

"See ashutosh..her vit D levels are very low n thats what is aggrevating the back ache..the pills are clearly not enough..i recommend 6 injections on alternate days..calcirol D3 k iv..any good dr can give..or she can come here. .."ashutosh looked at nidhi ..n spoke "i d see...but rest..i mean can she work..or"??Sudhir smiled"as of now all well..she can do everything that a normal pregnant woman can..but yes ..take the injections..n i am out for a week..i d get the tests done when i return..."and as the ward boy entered ...sudhir said"yeh lo..tumhara ultra sound..and the first pics of your baby..."Ashutosh saw nidhi take the packet warmly and he just put a hand to her elbow to guide ger to the car...

"Dr Ranganath..kal se alternate day nudhi aayegi for her injections...i have already given the prescription to dr Priyanka..see that she takes them..i might be in surgery.just see she is taken care of..i wish i could have left my surgeries but...n yes attach the bills to myaccount.."!dr Ranganath smiled "jee sir..i have already sent a requisition to New Medicalsuppliers...kal tak aa jaayenge injections..."!ashutosh sighed in relief..as he opened the case file of his patient n took his thoughts away from nidhi...

Just outsude the door stood dr mallika listening to everything..so ashutosh was ready to leave his surgeries now ...mallika's face hardened ...as she walked to her cabin ..n murmured "nidhi..nidhi..nidhi...uski sehat..uska junoon..uska baby...baby..."and a strange stony expression descended on mallika's face...she dialled New Medical..."yes its me dr Mallika...kuch yaad aaya"??

It was late at night..nidhi was studying her paediatric book as ashutosh yawned from his study table...n came to bed..smiling..and took the fairy tale book.."bolo aaj kaun si kahani..."??and nidhi smiled "hmm...aaj..Hansel n Gratel..."and ashutosh smiled as he began "once upon a time..."

It was a sleepy nidhi who smiled at the union of Hansel n Gretel with their father...and as ashutosh got up ..nidhi tugged at him..n he raised his eyebrow...as she blushed at his question...and he smiled as he switched off the lamp and undid the strap of her nightie...holding his treasure close to himself...before he began the journey to dizzying heights of ecstacy...at the peak of which nidhi's moans of his name echoed in their room...n he kissed her ..loving her with every fibre of his being..

Chapter Fifty three..

Chakravyuh...

"Chalo...tonight lets have a pizza ..n salad..thodi outing hogi..u r really overworked"!said dr Ashutosh as he saw a tired nidhi finish ger studies n arrange his wardrobe..she looked up n yawned..but her hubby smiled"chalo..drive pe chalogi to sab neend uttar jaayegi..come on..change kar lo.."!and nidhi smiled ..a twinkle in her tired eyes..

It was about 45 minutes later that Ashutosh told baba that they were going out "baba..aapke liye laayein pizza"??n baba smiled "yess why not..capsicum onion...aur pasta bhi ..bhai nidhi ka kuch to asar hoga mujhpe bhi..."and armaan added"aur mujh bechare pe bhi"!!and nidhi laughed ..as he put the buttons of nidhi's coat.."windy hai bahut...chalo ab"!!and baba n armaan waved!armaan got tea for the two of them n said"baba..aapko vishwaas hota hai ashu ko itna khush dekh kar...ek ladki ne sab kuch badal diya...warna aap to uss khadoos dr mallika ko bahu banane ki sochte the"!!and baba laughed n replied"arre beta..mujhe kya pata tha ki ashu ke patjhar mei bahaar aa jayegi"??and then smiled dreamily"waise ashu ko nidhi ke saath itna khush dekh ke...ghoomte dekh ke..lagta hai koi khwaab to nahi..."and armaan interjected"khwaab nahi huqueequat hai..ab nappies dhone ki practise kariye..."n baba rapped him"arre yaar abto diapers ka zamaana hai"!!and the mathur household echoed with joy!!

"Hmmm its yummmy "said nidhi as she bit into her pizza while dr ashutosh had a tiny piece with coffee ..and as the huge parcel of pizzas n pasta came n dr ashutosh paid as nidhi got up..n almost staggered ..but dr ashutosh caught her secure in his arms ..and steadied her...as the people on other tables looked at them..

Dr Ashutosh put his arm around her..holding her as they walked back...n as ashutosh gave the car keys to the waiter to keep the packed food in the car,he saw nidhi looking towards a store...Ashutosh took steps towards her...she stood mesmerised infront of a mother kid store...her eyes stuck to a floral baby wrap...ashutosh smiled as he put his arm on her shoulders n said "abhi time hai...but yes we could pick some maternity gowns.."!!but nidhi pouted n putting a hand on her tummy she said"abhi..let me grow...let the bump be big...then..5 months maybe"!!and ashutosh laughed and said"ok..we d come when you are big.."and then holding ger ..they walked to the car...

As they drove back..nidhi hummed and ashutosh smiled wryly..n said"hey doc!!u have begun to sing pretty well..."n nidhi joked"this is pregnancy hormones"!!and Ashutosh caressed her belly n said"pregnancy is doing wonders to you..."and nidhi giggled"ach ha..to how many kids...4 ya 6"??and ashutosh shook his head in disbelief!!

"Cheating...cheating ho gayi...dr ashutosh aap logon ne mujhe dhoka diya hai"!!it was the loud voice that got Ashutosh followed by nidhi out from their bedroom into the hall...and the sight of Rohan standing there..surprised them..."arre Rohan..tum...kab aaye"!!and Rohan made a face"kab aaya...waah ..main to chaand pe gaya tha..ki koi phone..koi whassap..kuch nahi ker sakte they mujhe."and Nidhi held him.."lekin hua kya Rohan.."??and Rohan distangled him n said"hua kya...arre itni badi good news hai..aur mujhe kuch pata nahi...ek chota baby aane waala hai..."and as his eyes met dr ashutosh's. ..he walked n hugged him...and armaan asked "achcha yeh bata..woh baby ka mai to chacha hoonga..tu kya hoga..chacha ya mama..ya chama"??and teased Rohan..who put his hand on nidhi's shoulders ..and said"na chacha..na mama...woh to mera buddy hoga..mera maggi mate..."!!and nidhi smiled...wiping her tears away...n said "achcha..ab aap log guppe kagaaiye..but mujhe to college jaana hai..so bye Rohan ..tum kya khaaoge.."??and Rohan smiled"aap jaaiye nidhiji..main aur dr ashutosh kuch der baith ke baat krenge. ..kyun.."!!and as nidhi left..ashutosh reminded"shaam ko aa jana ..injection lagna hai aaj..dr priyanka.."nidhi nodded ...as she walked waving a bye...

Ashutosh turned to Rohan ..."weak hai aajkal..vit D deficiency. .aaj se injections lagenge ...its very painful..oily vitamin...but there is no option..."and Rohan kept quiet...as baba looked seriously.."beta..injections essential hain yeh...baby ke liye bhi aur nidhi ke liye bhi...you have to support her beta...iss mushkil daur mein..."!!Ashutosh sighed...n sipped his tea...

*********"shukriya...aapke aage ke bhi contracts pucce samajhiye...bus absolute discretion"!!and mallika disconnected the cell...and got up ..with a pack delivered...she walked to the store ...looking around..she slipped in...n placed the new box of "vit D injections"!and then emerging ...she almost bumped into dr Priyanka..."ohhh sorry mam...i was just wanting to know..have the injections come..nidhi aayegi na..."mallika nodded n said"plz check the inventory list..."and then added"zara dhyaan se..dr nidhi bahut young hain..dhyaan se..vit d injections r painful..."!priyanka nodded but added"yes mam...but nidhi will bear all the pain...i know ..woh is baby ke liye..dr ashutosh ki khushi ke liye sab kuch sah legi...sab kuch..."n mallika walked away...her face having no expressions at all...as she stopped in front of ashutosh's cabin..n breathed in..she had to do what she was doing...nidhi had crossed all lines..it was she who had snatched ashutosh. ..n she would pay for it...she had to pay for it...for sure..."!!

************nidhi thanked dr bhagat as she drove to KGH for her first injection...she caressed her bump..n thought how shed look in those lovely maternity gowns...gowns which dr ashutosh had promised to buy for her. ...

Chapter Fifty four...

"Hi dr nidhi..kya haal chaal.."it was her long time friend dr Ranganath greeted her ..n she talked about anji n her fashion show..as dr Ranganath took her to dr ashutosh's cabin ..n both smiled at each other n said"in OT ..as usual"!!and dr Ranganath joked"waise all credit to u dr nidhi..ki you managed to woo dr hardstone..jabki woh sara time to OT me hi rehte hain"!!and nidhi quipped back"dont u forget dr Ranga..main unki assistant hoti thi"!!

"Excuse me..."and they both looked at dr mallika dressed immaculately in a jade silk sari with pears around ger neck..she smiled as nidhi bowed n wished her..Mallika asked her welfare as to why she had been advised vit D injections. .nidhi explained as she seemed to be concerned and attentive..adding in the end"you know nidhi ...i always feel..you hurried up motherhood..abhi tum bahut young ho..."nidhi smiled as she caressed her almost apparent bump n said"dr mallika...its the most beautiful phase of my life..our life..Dr Ashutosh is so happy..so complete..a different man..aapse behtar unki tanhaaiyyan kaun jaanta hai..aur aajkal janaab mujhe fairy tales sunaate hain..he dotes on me...n this baby..."nidhi was almost talking to herself..as mallika excused herself n dr Priyanka entered with an ampuole of Vit D from the freshly procured stock..mallika walked out...rubbing her hands together...the first step towards the revenge..her revenge from nidhi..the same lil useless intern who had once dared to challenge her...n had snatched away her best friend..the anchor of her life..what did mallika have in her life??nothing except loneliness...n it was all due to this dr nidhi...the scene of nidhi caressing her bump..haunted her..she had no right..no business to bring joy to Ashutosh...no ..she had to be robbed off each drsm of happiness..each smile on her face shpuld be snatched...those naughty vibrant eyes should turn to stone...tearless...emotionless.!!mallika smiled as she closed her eyes...

*****"ho gaya nidhi..get up"patted Priyanka as she injected the vit D inj into nidhi's hip n she winced in pain...she struggled ..as Priyanka helped.."you okay"??nidhi nodded.."yup..it was nasty.."Priyanka teased her"next time apne dr Hardstone se lagwa lena..samjjhi"!!and the two girls began chatting about life n kids..with Priyanka now a mother of an year old baby advising her on a whole range of issues..and then asked her..naughtily "jab tu ne join kiya tha KGH socha tha kabhi ...mrs Ashutosh hoke visit karegi..n that too preggy!!OMG!!!!"and nidhi blushed as she laughed..n said bye ..when the nurse informed that it was a long surgery that d take atleast 4 more hrs...

"Lag gaya injection beta..painful tha na"??it was baba enquiring from nidhi ..as she walked in lioking jaded n tired..."jee baba..painful to tha..but i m ok..bus sona chahti hoon thoda.."and baba smiled in understanding as nidhi entered the bedroom..and suddenly felt a strange urge to throw up...she did..n by the time she cleaned up n threw the clothes into washing..she felt completely drained..she somehow took out her nightie n then dozed off ..pulling the quilt to cover herself...

"Baba...nidhi aa gayi..kahaan hai"??it was a trifle worried Ashutosh who returned from kgh at 8.45 pm and didnt see the chirpy nidhi in the hall..as baba replied"leti hai..thaki so lag rahi thi..mujhe.."ashutosh nodded n entered the bedroom...yes nidhi was fast asleep..he smiled ..recalling her challenge about pregnancy not being an issue ..she was now clearly getting overworked n in a week or so ge d have to convince her to quit MD...

Ashutosh took his clothes from the wardrobe..a trifle surprised that nidhi had not taken them out as she usually did..but he just sighed...n went in...

One look at the washroom told him that nidhi had been sick..he rushed thru the shower ..n emerged to check nidhi..she had just somehow slipped on her mightie..all awry..and as he shook her..she opened ger eyes..."sone deejiye na..i am a lil tired..plz"and she slumped to his chest!!!

Dr Ashutosh was shocked as ge held ger face in his hands'nidhi..nidhi..aankhein kholo..are you okay...is the injection hurting"??and nidhi opened ger large eyes..trying to ficus them at ger husband and yawned...as ashutosh seemed to relax n put her woolen gown around her..n repeated his query...as she pointed to the hip.."it did hurt.."and ashutosh bit his lip...as he saw the red area on her hip..he caressed it as he looked at ger narrowly"nidhi..u are not well...tumhe hua kya hai.."??nidhi yawned and sat up..."kuch khaas nahi..."n then as if trying to recollect the events..she said"i took the injection n then drove back...phir freshen up hone gayi to i threw up...aur bus phir i felt drained out...so gayi..."ashutosh tried to feel her pulse..but she took her hand away"ab itna bhi pamper nahi kariye..i am fine..chai laati hoon.."!!and as she got up..ashutosh held her n said"jaan..its dinner time..come u must eat..chalo.."and nidhi smiled in between rubbing her eyes.

As they sat for dinner of saag n makke ki roti..nidhi pushed ger plate away n said"mann nahi hai..let me sleep plz.."ashutosh gave a worried look ...as nidhi got up ..n baba looked at him.."chinta na ker..thaki hai buss"!!Ashutosh somehow wasnt convinced as he got up n phoned dr Sudhir..who was in Srinager n explained the events..Sudhir replied"dont worry..some patients just feel overwrought after injections. .just let her rest..n let her have milk ..if not food"!!

Dr Ashutosh seemed a shade relieved as ge took a glass of milk for nidhi...as he entered he found her looking at him..her eyes open but a trifle dull..."nidhi..have milk..chalo.."and nidhi smiled as she complied...but not before saying"i dunno kya hua..per ..i am not at all hungry..."but as she was cajoled by her hubby..she sipped the milk...n then as he saw her eyelids droop...he smiled n wiped her face..to snuggle upto her...trying to figure out things ...n wait for the morning when he hoped things would be better...n his nidhi would smile ger million dollar smile again..the smile that lit up his world...

His cell buzzed..it was mallika..he was a lil irritated at this untimely call but answered..."oh ashutosh...buss poochna tha..nidhi kaisi hai..aaj bahut thaki si thi jab aayi thi injection ko..."!Dr ashutosh bit his lip..as he sighed"so rahi hai...weakness hai..i guess..lets wait n watch..abhi Sudhir bhi nahi hai..."!!mallika smiled to herself but spoke with a worried voice"tum kaho to..dr Purkaista ko bulaaon..shes a v experienced gynaec.."ashutosh smiled as his hand felt nidhi's bump..

'I feel just let her sleep...i hope all will be well"!!and mallika agreed..adding "take care"as ashutosh nodded..n disconnected.

Dr mallika switched off the lights..to enjoy the darkness...similar to the umbra that d engulf nidhi's world very soon...

Ashutosh snuggled his nidhi close n caressed her ...trying to feel how she was.

.n slowly his muscles relaxed ..as nidhi slept...n his drowsy eyes closed too...with hope in them..hope for a better tomorrow. ...

Chapter Fifty five...

Oh!!! Ashutosh...

"Good morning "!!it was a seemingly bright nidhi who awoke Ashutosh with a cup of tea the next morning,ashutosh sat up with a start..holding her hand "kaisi ho..how are you feeling"??and she smiled n said"theek hoon..almost completely fine..just a trifle tired..pata nahi kal kya hua tha...i guess ..."and ashutosh gave her a close look as he asked"bataao kya hua tha..tell me.."?nidhi smiled"i really cant say..i guess the vomit fagged me out...or maybe the long day...but jo bhi tha...i am ok now..uthiye..hospital se reminder call thi..9 baje surgery hai...aapki " ashutosh slapped his forehead n got up..taking just a sip n saying"aaj rest karo tum..i d tell Bhagat"..

By the time he emerged from the toilet..nidhi was dressed in a black churidaar kurta with a light blue sweater ..."tum ready kyun ho ..rest"?nidhi smiled n said"i am fine..aur maine aapse kaha tha na..MD me top karoongi..to let me try..n dont worry.."!ashutosh held her..n looked into her eyes..his own showing emotions from concern to worry to anger.."zara bhi problem ho..just tell me .."she giggled n asked"achcha to aap surgery beech mei chod ke aa jaayenge"!!and ashutosh looked at her in a way that silenced her...n then she said"problem hogi to id call you..but really i am ok..by evening id be even better...aur feel kariye..he is also fine..say hi to ur papa"she added looking at her bump..and ashutosh caressed it..trying to feel the heart beat..of the life they had created together..nidhi blushed and said"i feel one month mei movement feel hone lagenge...i am so excited..."!ashutosh bit his lip..thinking of the discomfort that the movements would cause...but then he smiled as he saw nidhi chirping to the baby.."hum dono week mei three times burger khaya karenge..aur two times pizza..."he shook his headn said "i am leaving...zara dhyaan rakhna.."and nidhi just hugged him from the back..n said"jee"as she leaned on him for a moment ..as he stopped in his tracks..closing his eyes to savour her touch..to complete the moment..but then she loosened her hold n said"jaaiye surgery hai "and ashutosh patted her hand n turned ..to hold her face in his hands..as he looked into her eyes silently and then planted a moist kiss on her forehead...sainyaan!!

"Dr nidhi..how are you feeling "it was a concerned dr Bhagat who asked this as nidhi was working in the lab with after the wards..she looked up..a trifle surprised "i am fine sir..."as he explained"dr ashutosh had whassapped me..he told you were v unwell yesterday..after the injection. ..nidhi felt a lil irritated as she replied"woh bahut chinta karte hain..i m fine..how can a vit D injection cause problems..it was probably just fatigue..thanx for asking me sir.."said nidhi as dr Bhagat eyed her narrowly as if trying to read her symptoms..

And nidhi focussed on her work again...

"Kaisi hai dr nidhi ab"??it was a sweet sounding mallika who asked ashutosh this..as he sat reading something on his tab..after the surgery.."she s ok"he replied without looking up.."kya padh rahe ho ashutosh "he remained silent n then looked up"trying to find in the latest researches if vit D injections are known to cause discomfort..."mallika almost coughed in nervousness but then checked herself as she said"oh come on!!how can vit D be harmful...kal thak gayi hogi..waise bhi tum to jaante hi ho dr nidhi ko..she is always the hyper kinds..."mallika bit her tongue..and corrected"i mean very sprightly.."ashutosh had a smile on his lips that spread into his eyes..as they turned soft..thinking of the girl who was changing his world each day..touching each nook n cranny with the magic wand of love and bringing it to life!!

Mallika excused herself ..and entered her cabin..her eyes turning to stone...tomorrow yes tomorrow will be the last day of the vivacity of nidhi..of her joy..her smiles..yes...the lethal sodium ferrocyanide in the injection would surely. ..."and mallika went to check something in the store...

"Arre ..dr mallika aap yahaan..kych chahiye tha kya.."it was dr ranganath who almost collided with dr mallika as she emerged from the store and he was stepping in...her face seemed to lose colour as she said"bus zara ..."and then with a sweet smile added"aapki boss hoon..zara cjeck kar rahi thi aapka store..aur inventory list"and walked away...as dr Ranganath got a call...it was anji.."hi ..i am so happy...my designs have been appreciated ...n selected for the lakme fashion show...and i have to go to delhi for a day..kal subah..."dr Ranganath seemed tense"anji...you cant fly ..you are 4 months.."anji seemed agitated as she said "i have met my gynaec..she has given me clearance..."ranganath stopped for a moment and closed his eyes..as he said"ok...let me try..if i can also come along..it d be work plus a get away...what say"??and anji squealed in delight...as Dr Ranganath entered dr Ashutosh's cabin..looking a trifle nervous...

Moments later ge emerged ...looking delighted n opened the door once more to say"thank you sir..thank you so much..aapse behtar boss koi ho hi nahi sakta..you are..."and as Ashutosh raised his eyebrow n said"jaaiye dr Ranganath isse pehle ki mera iraada badal jaaye!and dr Ranganath said"yees sir..i mean no sir..i mean thank you sir"and he whizzed out...as ashutosh dialled nidhi..

"Kaisi ho.."

"Bus ghar jaa rahi hoon...aap"??

"I d take about half an hour more...burger leta aaoon tumhare liye??"

"Hmmm...naah..id love sandwiches n ...samose..ramasrey ke samose..kismiss wale

.jaise aap khate hain..this fellow..yeh bilkul aap pe gaya hai.."ashutosh smiled as his eyes had dreams in them..dreams of joy..of bliss of laughter...of their baby...

"Mam..sir ne kaha tha..measue karne ko... false wall uthani hai...yahaan pe.."nidhi was a lil confused as the architect explained what ashutosh had told him...when his car stopped n she said"leejiye..hes here"and as he entered tugging at his tie ..she took the bag n said"yeh architect aapne..."and ashutosh got up n said"yesss..."and shook hands with the young man ..as they went into the outer part ..behind the bedroom..n study...and as nidhi seemed confused but then recalled the samosas n opened the hot pack...

Ashutosh returned "baba "??and nidhi said"pados mei dixitji ko dekhne gaye hain..aur phir dr mitra ke saath dinner hai unka..he had told me"!!Ashutosh nodded as he was about to say something but saw nidhi tell kaka"kaka plz do samose baba ke liye rakh deejiyega..unhe bahut pasand hain..."and ashutosh smiled...as nidhi took a big bite ..n said"i love...these..."and ashutosh saw the bliss in her eyes...

As they lay..nidhi looked at ashu n asked"woh architect..."and ashutosh smiled"arrey bhai..humare in janaab ka room plan karna hoga na...i have decided..iss wall se interconnect ho jayega..."he pointed as his hand caressed her tummy..trying to feel the baby...and nidhi suddenly felt tears stinging her eyes...as ashutosh held her "kya hua..."she shook her head..unable to speak..and just hugged him..as she whispered"thank you ..thank you ashutosh"and he looked at her...as he smiled n said"jab tum Ashutosh kehti ho to bahut achcha lagta hai..."and she lowered hr eyes...as he removed her gown..n opened the ribbon of her nightie...exposing her to his eyes..and just as she was going to off the light...he stopped her.."wait..let me see you..properly..."and nidhi blushed pink...as his gaze travelled to each fold of skin...followed by his warm lips...caressing fingers ...but very soon the touch changed to strong pressure movements ..his lips sucked at her enlarging brests as his fingers seemed to be rediscovering her hidden secrets as she closed her eyes...waiting for him to massage her in that intimate way...and just as she felt..his surgical fingers in her core..exposing her to him layer by layer...she felt being carried across flower beds..feeling the softness the velvety touch ..n also the sting if thorns..which seemed to bring her to life...and as she was hit by a hot wave that swept her...she uttered that ine word that was her world..her universe ..her being..her everything. ."ashutosh..."before her loud moans n his sighs filled the room...

"Nidhi..4.30 tak aana KGH..meri surgeries bhi khatm ho jaayengi tab tak...i want to be there when you take the shot.."!nidhi pulled over the new light brown coat that he had hot for her recently and quipped"shot??what shot??bullet thode hi lag rahi hai..ek injection hi to hai..aap bhi naa..bina bast darte hain.."but dr Ashutosh raised his famous eyebrow that silenced his young wife..n she quipped"ok..dont be dr Hardstone"!!and he smiled"achcha i thought u loved dr Hardstone..."and nidhi pouted n said"aap pareshaan kyun hote hain..sab to wahaan mere dost hain..dr ranganath priyanka ?jyothika. ."and Ashutosh suddenly recalled"oh tumhe bataana bhool gaya..Dr Ranganath isnt here ..woh delhi gaye hain anji ke saath..some fashion..stuff lakme..."!!and nidhi almost jumped as ashu caught her n said"zara aaraam se..u r pregnant..in case you forgot"!but nidhi smiled n said"OMG lakme fashion week..aur anji ki bachchi ne mujhe bataya bhi nahi..abhi khabar keti hoon..."and she walked to the hall as Ashutosh smiled to himself..taking a deep breath of the air that smelt of the energy..the positiveity of nidhi..was it the same room where ge had spent so many long lonely sleepless nights...he smiled as he combed his hair..admiring the tiny bindis of his wife stuck to the mirror..the mirror that reflected her youth juxtaposed with his greying side burns...

:"leejiye garam garam zero oil cutlets..n upma..see humare air fryer ka kamaal..."!and nidhi showed the crisp cutlets as she explained"woh aaj baba aur armaanji gaye hain na Allahabad so socha ki yehi khate hain breakky..kyun"??ashutosh seemed a trifle grey"aaj gaye hain??but baba jante the ki tumhara shot hai ..."!!nidhi smiled as she stuffed a piece of cutlet into his mouth n then her own n said"unhe yaad hai..he wasnt ready to go..but i forced him..armaanji ko new show room survey karna hai..baba bhi sangam ghoom lenge..aa jaayenge 3 baje tak..unhe zyaada fikr hai meri..mushkil se to ek bahu mili hai..agar mar mara gayi to ..dr hardstone ka kya hoga..."!and Ashutosh seemed stiffened "can we please stop this nonsense..n have food"!!and nidhi giggled ..as she served...but was stopped midway as her husband just held her hand ...n looked at her..she smiled and pushed him on the sofa n settld oin his lap"hone deejiye kharaab suit ki press...jaante hain..last night i felt faint movements ..like a clik..."and Ashutosh just caressed her tummy and put a protective hand across..."pain hua"??she shook her head n just cuddled up to him..as he held her with all the love that any man could feel for any woman...

As they finished the brealfast and dr ashutosh got up...nidhi said"zara suniye..."and he stopped as she got up and hugged him from behind..he just stood savouring the moment..their love..their future ...n then turned to hold nidhi...kissing her on the forehead he asked"kuch kehna hai..."?n she just snuggled up to him..n his ger face in his sweater...

As dr Ashutosh drove he could not forget the feel of nidhi. .the smile..the naughtiness in her eyes..n yet that depth...and he hummed

Hur taraf ab yehi afsaane hain..

Hum teri aankhon je deewaane hain..

Dr ashutosh smiled as his eyes had dreams of their tomorrow..full of laughter joy n bliss...

When he suddenly had to apply brakes at the turn..

"Dr nidhi..are you ok..i mean ready for the next shot"?it was a worried dr bhagay ..n nidhi smiled n said"sir..i am certainly not the only one to be getting such shots.."and then as an after thought she said"sir may i ask ...a personal question"??dr Bhagat seemed to stiffen n ge said"dr nidhi..i do not like my students to ask me personal questions..complete ur work by 4..sir had called up..he wants u at KGH by 4.15"and ge walked out...as nidhi seemed to fight between agitation n curiosity..when her cell beeped ..

OFF TO SURGERY..SEE YOU AT 4.30 SHARP..

and she sighed!"oh dr hardstone"!!

"Hi nidhi...aa gayi.."it was a beaming dr mallika who entered dr Ashutosh's cabin soon after nidhi had seated herself.."jee...woh ..o.t se kab aayenge...he told me to wait..."as mallika seemed sirprised..Dr Gandhi entered .."hi dr nidhi..sir will come in 20 mins..i d inject u today..boss's orders..but only when he comes...so just relax till then!!nidhi smiled as dr mallika withdrew...and walked to her cabin...had ashutosh been suspecting??what if dr Gandhi discovered something fishy...but how could he...mallika's fingers trembled...as she took a glass of water...n closed her eyes...the frame of nidhi ..leaning on ashutosh. .her ashutosh came back to her mind...n she clenched her fusts...pushing back her hair..she strode out firmly...

Nidhi seemed to breathe the air of the cabin..the air that smelt of him..of them..their past..their tears n their smiles..that night when during the separation when she had given him coffee n he gad said"aapki coffee ka swaad bilkul nahi badla"n she had replied"kaash main bhi coffee hoti to mujhe bhi nahi badalna padta..."!but now she smiled as she put a hand on ger bump and crooned "this is ur papa's cabin...pata gai yahaan mamma ne ek baar papa ka coat pehan liya tha...n just then papa came..."!!

"Aa gayi tum"!it was dr Ashutosh...bringing her into the present...as he asked"kya ker rahi thi"??n she blushed "aapke bete ko aapka cabin dikha rahi thi..."and ashutosh stood rooted for a moment...as his eyes had that velvet softness in them..but then he steadied his voice n took the intercom"send dr Gandhi in.."!

It was mallika who came with dr Gandhi..as Ashutosh instructed"plz get the shot.."n dr Gandhi nodded ..and withdrew as mallika added"i hope dr Ranganath ne sister ko bata diya ho.."and she looked at dr Gandhi..who said"yes..he told the suster..i d get the shot..just a moment'

In a moment dr Gandhi entered with the ampuole and syringe and just as nidhi lay on the patient bed ..ashutosh looked on as the nurse helped her expose her upper hip..

Just then there were loud noises outside and dr mallika rushed out...it was an emergency...an accident case...head injury...dr Ashutosh was needed...she seemed to smile..Was even God with her!!

Ashutosh stood up "damn it..."!!but nidhi said"aap jaaiye plz"and he just looked at her n was gone...as dr Gandhi lowered himself n injected the liquid into nidhi's hip...as mallika heaved a silent sigh of relief...

It was an hour later as Ashutosh came to his cabin after sewing ip the patient that he dialled nidhi...no reply..he seemed tense..dialled landline..kaka picked up.."kaka..baba aa gaye"??kaka answeted "bus beta ...abhi pahunche hain...aur nidhi beti shaayad so rahi hai..."Ashutosh seemed worried..he could sense a strange feel...when dr Gandhi entered...

"Sir...just a feel..but the shot seemed a lil strange..took longer for that 2 cc...though i checked the date..but still i wanted to share with you..."dr ashutosh got up..and just as ge was about to instruct Dr Gandhi..the cell rang "home "it was...

Baba almost yelled"ashu jaldi aa...dekh nidhi ko kya ho raha hai...abnormal shivering...plz beta jaldi aa"!!and dr Ashutosh just yelled"dr Gandhi remove those ampuoles now"and he drove like hell...his mind in a tizzy...

*******Baba held a trembling nidhi.."beta..kya baat hai...let me take ypu b.p."and as baba got up for the instrument while armaan walked outside in unbearable tension.. ..nidhi cried ..a spasm in her abdomen hurt her badly...as she called out "Oh ...Ashutosh..."

Chapter Fifty six...

Dr Ashutosh threw his coat around n shouted back to dr Gandhi.."send those ampoules into the analysis lab..now "and he started the car ...

It was an agonising drive of 20 mins after which he screeched to a halt at his house that nidhi had made a home for him..He rushed in...

Baba had just taken the bp..it was 160 by 100..not v high..but nidhi was shivering ...abnormaly so...and the jab of pain that was beyond explanation..Ashutosh threw his bag and held her...hugging her to him..and then pulling her a lil away ..he held her face in one hand and asked"kya hua hai nidhi..tell me..whats hurting jaan..bolo"but nidhi just convulsed in reply as he snuggled her to him ..n gave his cell to baba.."baba..plz call kgh boliye nidhi ko laa rahe hain..dr Sneha aur dr Purkaista ko call karein..rt now.."nidhi clutched at her abdomen again ..n whimpered "Ashutosh ..its the baby...something is wrong...helllp Ashutosh.."and Ashutosh just cocooned her in his arms and called Armaan.."armaan car start ker..this is an emergency.."and he lifted nidhi in his arms..carrying her to the car..her face almost white with agony..Baba sat in the front seat and coordinated things as Armaan drove..nidhi lay on the back seat..almost crying loudly..n by the time they crossed hazrat ganj she was crying in agony..her face contorted...and hair wet with sweat ...even in the chill of winters..Ashutosh put a hand on her bump..he could not feel anything ..but he knew...what the jabs of pain meant...and then nidhi uttered a sharp yell..putting her hands on the bump..her eyes seem to be complete white circles of death...when Ashutosh shouted"nidhi...nidhi...look at me..dekho idhar..."nidhi somehow opened her large eyes and with a mammoth effort held her husband's face in her hands and whispered..."plzzz ..plzzz save our baby..he is dying.."!and Ashutosh breathed in sharply and held her closer...but now nidhi's eyes were closed ..her hands still on her husband's coat..but Ashutosh could feel...an ominous flow..He yelled "faster armaan..she is miscarrying.."and baba uttered"oh god!!"in a voice loathed in agony...

The car screeched to a halt and Ashutosh helped her to be wheeled in..dr Sneha,who was dr Sudhir's assistant and a renowned gynaec was there...as nidhi was put on the stretcher ..her hair flying awry..Ashutosh looked at her blood stained kurta...he knew...it was all over..he followed nidhi as she was wheeled in..and drGandhi rushed in followed by Dr Priyanka..

The door of the examination chamber closed...nidhi was completely unconscious as the nurse changed ger into a gown and dr Sneha began to examine her...Ashutosh's eyes suddenly fell on a dark crimson blue patch on her leg..exposed as the gown was opened for the gynae examination. ..he touched it...n looked at dr Gandhi..who spoke in a stunned whisper"toxin patches..sir"and Ashutosh nodded silently..as dr Sneha looked up.."sorry dr Ashutosh. .she has miscarried..the foetus has to be cleared..otherwise the uterus will be irreversibly damaged..."Dr Ashutosh nodded n looked at Dr Priyanka "get the papers ready..n Gandhi get the OT ready for the procedure..."and as the drs moved out..Ashutosh was left alone with an unconscious nidhi..he stood looking at her..a vivacious girl in the morning..now a pitiable heap..He moved towards her to caress her hair..wondering if she knew her worst fears had come true...Just as he moved towards her...the door was flung open..n mallika walked in...

"Kya hua..kaisi hai nidhi ab.."asked a seemingly worried Dr mallika..Dr Ashutosh did not look away from nidhi..but said in a voice that seemed to be coming from v far away.."she has miscarried. ..we have lost our baby.."and as dr mallika looked ..tried to look aghast..nidhi's pulse weakened suddenly..as the monitor showed a weakening crests n troughs. .and as Dr Ashutosh looked at nidhi..in panic..dr Gandhi entered..."sir the OT is ready. .oh God she is sinking..lets rush sir.."Ashutosh nodded n held nidhi's hand as they wheeled ger into the OT...they crossed baba n armaan standing distraught ..but seeing Ashu's face taut with tension ;they just stood...almost frozen ...as dr mallika stopped for a fraction n tried to assuage the tension"lets hope..."

Dr Priyanka got the consent papers for dr Ashutosh to sign..as he stood in his cabin..his heart n mind absolutely numb..and he looked up at Priyanka..as she gave him the form.."sir ..plz sign.."dr ashutosh took a pen and looked at the printed paper..he knew what it meant..it said that he agreed to the surgical procedure to remove the foetus from his wife..and he took full responsibility of the risk to her life..!Ashutosh signed ..and no the pen did not slip from his hands..he stood for a second n then kept it back n walked with firm steps into the OT.

Dr Sneha began the D&C dr Gandhi began to monitor the anesthetist n nudged dr Ashutosh to put on his mask...As they stood watching ,nidhi was cleared n cleaned and put on drip ..though her pulse still seemed weak..Dr Gandhi looked at his boss and dr ashutosh watched the spreading blue patches on nidhi...he drew in a deep breath n declared"dr Gandhi..nidhi needs an anti toxin..she has been poisoned..i want the analysis report of those ampuoles..ASAP.."and as dr Gandhi seemed to dither..knowing v well that an anti toxin could be dangerous if there was no toxin in the body...but dr Ashutosh reiterated"Dr Gandhi..its an order ..i know what i am doing..we dont have time to lose.."!

Dr Mallika sat in her cabin..she had been unaware of what was being done by dr Ashutosh n dr Gandhi but yes she knew that the baby was lost...n she had a deep sense of satisfaction. .it was not that mallika had been murderous ...but wasn't dr Ashutosh her's when that impish nidhi snatched him away...n shouldn't she suffer for it??The thought that the loss may hurt ashutosh too had struck her..but then ..wasnt this simply collateral damage...she smiled..a silent cold blooded smile as she thought...all she needed now was to let the storm pass...n then while nidhi would wallow in depression..she d worm her way into ashutosh's heart...what if he found out????a lurking fear raised its head. ..but how could he...even if he found the ampuoles were toxic..how could she be held responsible? ?it would be simply put on some employee...of New medicals...it was a fool proof plan..

"Dr Gandhi we d have to wait n watch..v carefully..its a generic toxin..we can give a specific one only after the reports...phone the lab..."!

Ashutosh came out ..having stood by a still unconscious nidhi..he did not touch her...he did not caress or cuddle her...he was absolutely stunned and what weoghed upon his mind was...how would he face her.

What would he explain to her..how would he placate her when she regained consciousness n realised the loss...Ashutosh closed his eyes for a second...n walked out..right into baba...

Baba caught hold of him .."ashu kaisi hai meri bachchi..meri nidhi.."??ashutosh looked up n then trying to stabilise his baritone he said"baba...nidhi has had a miscarriage. ..our baby is lost..."and then he walked out...into the freezing night..thriwing his coat on a chair..he let the biting wind chill him. did..it hurt..yes it did...almost...as he sat on a bench...and let the icy wind blow his hair...he wanted to feel something...he wanted to accept the vacuumn created by the sudden collapse of their dreams...what if nidhi couldn't bear it?what if the poison claimed her. ..just as it had claimed the baby...Ashutosh suddenly felt the crushing urge to weep...to give way to tears...but a hand on his shoulder made him pause..it was dr Gandhi..."sir..you were right..the ampuoles had Toxin..ferrocyanide. .dr nidhi has to be saved now...i have contacted drs from PHI...dr Bhagat is rushing in with his team of drs..but the chances are v slim...i need to tell you that"!

Ashutosh did not lose colour..he stood up...and walked with firm steps to where nidhi..his nidhi lay..still unconscious. ..She had to be saved...n he would save her..come what may...

"Sir..how did it all happen...dr nidhi was fine in the afternoon. ..."it was a tense dr Bhagat who met dr Ashutosh ..as the team from PGI arrived and Ashutosh quickly apprised them of the situation and the drs went into the OT...dr Arun..the anti toxin specialist injected nidhi with two innoculations of specifis anti toxins and stated"we have done what we could...now we can only stand n wait...lets hope ...n pray"!

The team of drs came out ..leaving dr Ashutosh alone with nidhi...but before coming out..dr Bhagat stood by ashutosh n said "sir..i feel you must investigate how the injections had poison in them...who did it n more importantly why"??Ashutosh sighed n nodded ..as dr Bhagat went out..and ashutosh looked at nidhi ...looking closely at nidhi...holding her hand n observing a blue spot that seemed to be disappearing...and the pulse seemed to be improving..the dr in ashutosh felt the hope..but the husband cringed at the thought of the loss n suffering...with a massive effort he stood by her n gently touched her forehead ..he tried saying "nidhi"but words failed him...he walked out..n ordered priyanka "dr priyanka i want the store inventory list..now"dr priyanka got the latest one n added.."sir the previous ones are in the system n only dr Ranganath knows the password...i have c ontacted him...he s coming from delhi..."!

Ashutosh kept quiet n then looked at dr Gandhi n priyanka.."i want the names of all those who have access to the store..i am going to get to the bottom of this affair..n yes if necessary inform the police..."dr Gandhi seemed shocked..."sir do you suspect..."!Ashutosh nodded "yes..i dont suspect..i am quite sure someone tried to poison nidhi...i d find out who..."

There was a knock at the door n baba entered...all drs stood up..as he called ashutosh out...drawing him out he said"beta..colonel ko khabar karni hogi na.."Ashutosh seemed dazed...but added"baba..nidhi meri zimmedari ..meri biwi hai..i dont wish to trouble col verma right now...let us see how she reacts..."baba kept quiet..he knew his Ashu was never apt at social relationship n now under duress...it was his worst withdrawn self...everyone would have to wait...

Dr Bhagat got up n said.."we d wait in the common room sir..aap dr mathur se baat keejiye..."ashu nodded as baba put a hand on his shoulder.."ashu...kya hua ..afterall miscarriage is a miscarriage. .itna pareshan mat ho..i know how it feels...per..."ashutosh opened his tie with a snap.."baba...it didnt happen automatically. ..nidhi ko kisi be poison kiya hai...uske vit injections mei ferrocyanide tha..aur main..inspite of all my knowledge main guess nahi kar paya..that night first shot ke baad...kitni beemaar thi woh..i should hv known..i should have known baba..but..."the door opened and dr Priyanka came in.."sir nidhi .."Ashutosh shot up an eyebrow..."nidhi ko hosh aa gaya hai..plz aaiye..she is hysterical.."!

Ashutosh rushed in..nidhi had pulled herself up into sitting position..and was pulling at the tubes onserted into her arm..as dr Sneha n mallika tried to control her..but as dr Ashutosh entered they stepped aside..as for an instant nidhi looked at him n then pulled at the needle out of her arm...crying.."my baby...i want my baby..."ashutosh tried to hold her...control her...he pushed her hair back..n kissed her forehead..trying to calm her down but she pulled at his shirt..almost tearing it...crying incoherently...as the monitor beeped again..she needed the drip n the anti toxin..."nidhi..baat suno plz nidhi..."but nidhi was beyond reason..and he knew he would lise her this way...dr Ashutosh held her toughly ...shouted "nidhi..."but as she continued to shreik...he winced ...clenched his left hand...n raised his right hand...SLAP...YES A TIGHT SLAP ON NIDHI'S CHEEK...THAT ALMOST INSTANTLY BROKE HER DEFIANCE AS HER CRIES CHANGED TO HELPLESS SOBS...N HE HELD HER..INSERTING THE TUBES AGAIN..N THEN BENT TO HUG HER..TO BRING HER CHEEK WITH THE MARK OF HIS FINGERS CLOSE TO HIS CHEST...TRYING TO SPEAK...TRYING TO CRY..TO SHARE HER LOSS...BUT WORDS FAILED HIM..SO DID THE TEARS...HE JUST HELD ON TO HER...HOLDING THE QUAKING FRAME IN HIS ARMS...AS NIDHI FELL BACK INTO A SEMI CONSCIOUS STATE..WHISPERING.."ASHUTOSH...OUR BABY..."AND DR MALLIKA STOOD ON THE DOORWAY...HER EYES TWO BURNING COALS...
