Chapter Thirty nine...

College...Kaam... aur khwaab...

It was nidhi's first day at college..yes she had joined M.D PAEDIATRICS at Sanjay Gandhi Post Gratuate institute;just walking distance from kgh..thogh kgh too had M.D seats yet she had agreed with Dr ashutosh that nidhi will never get a fair deal there with all n sundry thinking that it d be a cake walk for her since she was the dean's wife!!

So it was on tuesday that Kaka gave dahi chini to her..n she touched baba's feet as dr ashutosh put his arm around her as she sat in her Benz and he said"i know..tumhe All the Best ki zuroorat nahi..but nevertheless best of luck nidhi..."and she had driven off at sharp 8 a.m with her dean hubby still relaxing in his kurta pyjama..n his news paper!!

College was v different..though most of the batch of 40 drs were of her age..many of them married ..some to each other..yet nidhi felt a lil lost..and as she picked up the routine and her ne badge ;the dr incharge wished her"hi..dr...errr"and she added"dr nidhi.."and he smiled"yup..i know dr nidhi Ashutosh. .your husband is THE dr ashutosh..isn't he"??and nidhi smiled n nodded!!

The entire forenoon was a long theory lecture on common diseases that inflict kids and though nidhi listened v intently..she did not feel the need to take notes...as they came out for lunch..she was v famished..it was 2!!as she wondered if dr ashutosh had eaten..n took out her cell..a fellow student whisteled..."ohho...there comes the loving hubby for his young wifey"!!as nidhi loked at this dr...a dr Sanjay ..from probably meerut..she did not wish to answer or question with him...n just rushed to Ashutosh.."chalo..chalo..jaldi..tumhe pizza khilate hoon.."said he as nidhi slumped into the car..n pouted"only an hr..nahi ho paayega..."and her hardstone hubby smiled "arre main chahoon to sab kuch ho sakta hai.."and as they entered Pizza hut..they were guided to a Reserved table n within moments cheese capsicum onion pizza n pepsi arrived with a veg salad n plain garlic bread for ashutosh...nidhi was amazed...as dr ashutosh patted her indulgently n said"jaldi...i knew time kum hoga..i had booked n ordered..."and nidhi pouted"aap itte achche kyun hain"!!and he smiled as he said"main bahut strict bhi ho sakta hoon...so hurry..and yes yeh roz roz nahi expect karna...samjhi"!!and nidhi dug into her pizza hungrily as her hubby observed her with a deep love ..he could do anything to keep her smiling...well almost anything...and he sighed...

As he dropped her at the college gate..she said"andar nahi drop ker denge"??and he retorted"off course kar doonga..mujhe laga..tum embarassed feel karogi..meri umr ki wajah se..."and nidhi looked at him...n with a strange firmness in her otherwise kiddish voice she said"aap mera naaz hain..aap ki wajah se mera sir humesha ooncha raha hai..khud pe sharminda ho sakti hoon...per aap pe??kabhi nahi"!!and ashutosh silently held her hand..giving it a lil squeeze and drove her into the college premises ..n waved a bye..a lil blushed as nidhi shouted"bye... n thank u for the pizza"!!!

"Yes Mallika"it was dr ashutosh indicating dr mallika to sit in his cabin as dr Ranganath also was there n he addressed her"ya ..mallika..you have to examine the new tenders for drug suppliers to kgh.the last daye is 21 of next month..so let the process begin..you very well know everything.u have been conducting it year after year.."and mallika smiled ..as she said"dont worry ashutosh sab ho jaayega...bus mujh pe vishwas rakho...plzz"dr ashutosh paused for a moment..looked at his one time friend..n added"mallika ..mujhe tumhare kaam..tumhare accumen pe poora bharosa hai..and now excuse me..i have work with dr Ranganath "!!

Alone in the cabin..he looked at Ranganarh n asked"so...how are things..hows anji"??dr ranganath looked away..trying to evade dr ashutosh's gaze n said"sir...simla ke baad..apne ghar pe hai..she hasnt come to my house"!!ashutosh sighed as he tinkered with his pencil and said"Ranganath...uska ghar wahi hai..jo aapka hai.."dr ranga smiled bitterly n said"i wish woh yeh samajh sakti...kaash"and dr ashutosh raised his eyebrow "to aapne bhi to usse teh mehsoos nahi karaaya kabhi??afsos..aaj kal aap log pyaar to karna jaante hain..per usse nibhana nahi...meri advice hai..anji ko ghar laaiye..n try to rebuild the relationship. .."!!dr ranganath nodded silently as he emerged out...

In her cabin..dr mallika was finalising the drw of tenders for medical supplies..she knew it was a job of great integrity n honesty...n most importantly ashutosh had relied upon her...after a lonnng time"!!!

As nidhi sat in her car after a long day ..at 7.30 she looked irritated at her buzzing cell...it was dadi bua!!"meri bachchi..naha li??doodh piya??thak gayi hogi!!pata nahi kab peecha chootega tera is mui padhai se"!!and nidhi laughed as she told she was on her way back..and a dazed dadi bua retorted"hai raam..meri bachchi!!!tab..kaise grahasti basegi teri??mai to apne nati kaa intezaar karte karte hi..."nidhi felt agitated..n tired n just said:bye sadi bua..bahut traffic hai..."!!!

Dadi bua turned to keep the phone ..taken aback to see yograj!!:"bua...nidhi md padh eahi hai..ek saal usse disturb nahi kariye..yeh sab ideas..."dadi bua looked at yog n exclaimed"arre main usi ki chinta me hoon...woh daaktar puchaas baras ka hoke parivaar badhayega kya??meri bachchi ka mann hai..."yograj cut her short "bua...ek to dr ashutosh ek baras mei 43 ke honge 50 ke nahi..aur doosri baat unhe apni family kab plan karni hai..yeh un dono ka faisla hona chahiye..aapka nahi...ab chaliye khana lagwaaiye.."!!and dadi bua went to the kitchen shouting"manhoos...kahaan marr gaya tu"!!

"Aa gayi beta...aa le chai pee..."!!nidhi looked at baba..the fulcrum of their home n lives n yawned"baba..woh kab aaye"??baba smiled n said"7 baje aa gaya tha..dekh tere liye dinner banwaya hai usne.."and nidhi blushed as she ran into her room!!

Dr ashutosh was arranging the ironed clothes...as she stood aghast..."aap kyun keer rahe hain yeh sab...leave it bus..."!!ashutosh laughed as he arranged her saris .."bhai ab biwi college jaayegi..MD keregi to ghar mujhe hi to dekhna hoga...sochta hoon retirement le loon kyun"!!!and nidhi hugged him..hitting on his chest playfully!!

As she came out of the wash room after a long bath..and sat at the dressing rable..aahutosh looked up from his notes n asked"how was the day...the experience"??nidhi kept quiet..thought n then said"hmmm..interesting. ..but too academic for me...wards were interesting...kuch difficult diagnosis hain...kal dr Bhagat will lecture us..n take wards"!!aahutosh smiled"Bhagat...every student's nightmare...zara bach ke rehna..dangerous hai"!!and nidhi pouted"dr hardstone se bhi zyaada dangerous"??and both of them laughed...

Dinner was refreshingly simple but tasty..mixed veg,aloo tamatar n roti with kheer to follow..but by the time nidhi finished her second roti..she could barely open her eyes...and as baba signalled...ashu smiled n said"nidhi..tum room me hao..id get ur kheer"!!and as she yawned n kept her plate..n said"kaka..baba ko doodh..n then took his medicine bottle n gave him his dose"bhooliyega nahi baba..."and he patted her..as nidhi walked to the bedroom ..

"Beta thoda dhyaan de..aaj bahut tired hai..."ashutosh nodded"baba..aaj first day tha...dheere dheere routine set ho jayega..."baba patted him n added"as a dr i agree ki usse MD zuroor karni chahiye...per teri tarah main bhi jaanta hoon woh kya chahti hai..kyun nahi sochta tu..beta"??Ashu bit his lip..n replied"baba..MD as u know is v tough...phir agar she gets...pregnant..to kaise cope up karegi...health issues hue to..and baba she is still so young!"baba kept quiet...he knew ashu understood nidhi's desires n if he was denying them there must be a good reason...he sighed as heeraman got kheer...n ashu shouted"kaka..armaan ke liye rakh deejiyega nahi to royega"!!

As ashutosh entered the room...he saw..nidhi fast asleep..she had not even removed her gown..he smiled n put the bowl down..and sat by her..opening her gown..as she mumbled"sone deejiye na..mera mann nahi "and as he pulled her cheeks lightly n said"arre gown utar ke leto..aur lo main..isliye jaga raha tha...ussliye nahi.."and thrust a spoon of cold kheer in her mouth..."mmm.delicious...aur thodi..."and she sat with eyes closed as her hubby fed her kheer...and then she smiled..n mumbled"thank you...ab brush nahi karna..."and dr ashutosh lifted her in his arms n took her to brush...as she resisted"tumhe paalna!!oh god..i am sure bachchon ko paalna zyaada aasaan hoga..kum se kum woh hulke to honge..."and nidhi opened her eyes wide...and looked at her husband in surprise..as he bit his tongue n indicated"brush karo..nahi to dentist ke paas jana hoga"!!and nidhi stamped her feet!!!

Chapter Forty...

Sukh dukh...

"I just hate it...aapko bina naashta khilaye college jaana"it was an agitated nidhi talking to ashutosh..as he sat in his tracks sipping tea while she was rushing through her dressing up..n taking out her hubby's clothes for the day..selecting his tie..all this she insisted on doing even though Dr ashutosh told her many times that he could v well manage for a year..till her MD was over..but nidhi was after all nidhi!!

She grumbled"dr bhagat to butcher hain..bus students ka khoon peete hain..u know i have named him vampire..kaafi popular naam hai"!!ashutosh looked up "waise for ur information mere kaafi achche dost hain.2 yrsmy junior..dinner pe bula lein"??nidhi banged the wardrobe"duniya ke saare khadoos aapke dost to honge hi..and no thanks..ghar merabhi hai..so no dinner vinner..plz"!!and as she picked her lab coat..ashutosh got up with a sigh n went out only to return with a plate of parantha n peas n a cup of coffee.."lo..aur kal se i d also have breakfast with u..ok..khush "??and nidhi pouted as she rolled up the paratha..n ate it..while ashutosh shook his head in disbelief..and as she waved bye..he held her hust for a moment..touching her hair tenderly n saying"raat mein drive pe chalenge..ok"??and she squealed n hugged him in delight...and ran off...touching baba's feet in the hall n informing him she was going to the butcher "dr bhagat!!!

Ashutosh picked up his towel n entered the toilet..n just as he took off his tees...something fell...he looked around n found nidhi's pearl tops...he smiled n came out..picked his cell n whasapped"tumhaara earring mujhe chod ke jane ko raazi nahi hai..."!!and smiled looking at his broad bare torso...imagining nidhi's head on it...but then sighed as he recalled he had a meeting in kgh..

As nidhi parked her benz n rushed to the class..she heard a colleague say"wah!!HOD se shaadi karne ka faayda..madam benz mein..hum bus mein!!waah re kismat"!!nidhi's cheeks burnt but she did not answer..and almost collided with a middle aged man..flooring her books...as she looked up to say sorry..pushing her tears away..she quivered to find it was dr bhagat..going to the class!!!she ran..and took her seat panting!!

The lecture was about gastro intestinal diseases in infants n Roda viral in specific..it was an exhaustive class and as it got over..nidhi looked at her cell ..to read the whassapp. .n she replied"mera tops kahaan rakhaa..dil ke kareeb ya dimaag ke"!!pat came the reply"sorry doc!!main hat nahi pehanta...mere coat ki upper pocket mein hai..dil ke kareeb"!!and nidhi smiled as a wardboy came n informed her that dr bhagat wanted to meet her now!!she gasped in nervousness! !

"Yes ashutosh..tenders ki last date next monday hai..obviously we d go for the combo of lowest quote from the best med firm..."it was dr mallika explaining things as dr ashutosh listened intently..n added"yes there can be absolutely no compromise in quality..as it is the market is teeming with spurious drugs..we need to be careful.."mallika nodded as the meeting was over n dr ranganath gave ashutosh his surgery schedule for the day...a cerebral tumour removal awaited him..as ge took off his coat..n carefully felt for nidhi's earring...as he recalled him piercing her ear lobe with it...and the joy of pain on ger face...it was before they had had a union...n he sighed..a smile bringing back the thrill...as mallika spoke"ashutosh..OT is awaiting you..."and dr ashutosh walked with a resolute purpose!!

'Yyyess sir..."it was a nervous looking nidhi who entered dr Bhagat's chamber..he was viewing some x ray..n turned around..he was a man of 40 ..a junior of dr ashutosh..but looked as severe..nidhi clutched to her books ..n looked at him..

He relaxed in his chair..but did not offer nidhi a seat..n finally after a few moments of agonising silence..he spoke up.."in the morning...i "and nidhi interrupted him"sir i am sorry..actually..i was rushing"!!he held his hand up to stop him n smiled...nearly so "dr nidhi..is it ur habit not to let the other person speak"??and nidhi bit her lip..

As he continued"well..i can realise what you face..the situation is tough for you..ur colleagues look at u with jealousy..n ur proffessos with suspicion...i heard n witnessed what happened in the morning..dr nidhi..i just wanted to tell you..dr ashutosh is an exceptional man..my senior n almost an ideal..its a privilege to be teaching the brave lil girl who chose to be his wife..just one thing..always remember..this world makes things tough only for those who have the courage to surmount the obstacles...n u sure are courageous. .dont worry..n let me know if things get nasty...ok"??nidhi stood..a lil shocked...she had not expected this humane kind approach behind that mask of strictness. ..as she bowed...dr bhagat said"now run along for lunch..wards in 45 minutes..n not even mrs ashutosh can be late dor them..go"!!and nidhi withdrew...and ran to the canteen...

"Kaka...aaj kheer bana deejiye..sweet dish mein..nidhi bahut thak jaati hai..aate te.."it was a freshened up ashutosh talking to kaka..n baba in the hall...as kaka smiled n baba added"heeraman..dhyaan rakha karo nidhi ki pasand napasand ka...bahut mushkil daur hai.."and ashutosh smiled n added"baba..woh akeli nahi hai iss duniya mein jo MD ker rahi hai..."but the convo was cut short as nidhi's car could be heard...and she entered ..her hair dishevelled n face tired...she smiled on seeing the duo of father son..n said"buss abhi aayi"and rushed in to take bath...

As she emerged in her woollen gown..she saw her husband standing by the window...she slumped to the sofa...as he stood behind..n began to press ger shoulders firmly..with his nimble hands...and she almost moaned with relief n pleasure.."dinner. .chalo..."and as she extended her hands wanting to be lifted in hus strong arms...aahutosh kissed her nose n said"achcha. .bhool gayi ki baba hain baahar"!!and nidhi bit her tongue!!

As they ate dinner nidhi told all about her classes n wards..n the dact that she was doing well..till finally kaka got the kheer...n she squealed in delight"thank u kaka"!!as the kind man replied"beti..thank u ka huqdaar to ashu hai..usi ne kaha ki kheer bana deejiye ..nidhi ke liye"!!and nidhi lowered her eyes turning pink in shyness

"Ittne bure bhi nahi hain aapke dr bhagat..."said she as she took off ger gown n slipped i to the quilt..wearing her cotton nightie..ashutosh held her as he raised his eyebrow for an explanation and as she narrated what had transpired. .he caressed her...gulping a lump..."tumhe kitna kuch sehna padta hai na...mujhse rishta rakhne ki wajah se.."!!and nidhi smiled..putting her arms around him..n said...

"Aap hain mere sath..to main sab ko face ker sakti hoon...buss mera earring waapas ker deejiye ..."and a naughty glint came into her eyes..as ashutosh held her close..n said"you r tired..so jao..."but she pulled at him...n he yielded to kiss her slowly...but then began to massage her hair...as her eyelids drooped...n she slept..still holding to his tee...ashutosh smiled..kissing her once more..controlling his own stirm of desire...n slept off..holding her tight in his arms...

It was 10 days laterthat the tender was finalised and NEW MEDICAL N SURGICALS became the authorised supplier to KGH.dr mallika smiled as mr Ratan choudhary the MD sat in front of her n thanked ger ..extending his hand ge said"mam..if there is snything we can do for u..ever..just ket us know...anything for u"!!dr mallika smiled..and said"thanx...now i have a surgery..."and went off...as the MD whispered "now that we have this contract..we d never let go of it"!!

"Nidhi beta kya hua..bol to..."it was a tense baba..who saw a wilted nidhi enter home...she nodded"kuch nhi baba..thakaan hai..i just want to sleep"!!

An hr later as ashutosh entered..seemingly delighted that nidhi was home..and they could go on a drive that was over due..and just as he was about to rush in shouting her name..a name that gad now filled his life n home..baba cautioned "dheere ashu..uski tabiyat theek nahi hai shaayed"..ashutosh seemed aghast..."kya hua ..."and entered..to see her restless on the bed...and as he sat n held her..his hands could feel her burning flesh...nidhi was running high fever...

He pushed back her hair ..n asked"fever hai..kab se??phone kyun nahi kiya..."and then without awaiting an answer..he got up and came out for ice bandages..n the first aid box..as he made her sit n pushed a crocin down..she complained"dukh raah hai sab kuch..."and he patted her. .putting the ice bandages on her forehead...while ge tenderly pressed her feet...as she moaned..n tears seemed to ooze out..he wiped them..and caressed her gair...wondering if he had been unjust with her..pushing her into academics against her wishes...as nidhi whispered "paani..."and he got up with a furrowed brow...

Chapter Forty one...

"haar... jeet... pyaar... nafrat "

TO DEAR FLORIDA..WHO MAKES ME SEE MY UPDATES

"Nidhi...come on have some tea n biscuits..lo"it was a very tense dr ashutosh who put his hand on nidhi's forehead..n then touched her throat..she was still blazing..the whole night had been restless for her n it was only in the wee hrs that she had fallen asleep..as she opened her eyes slowly n ashutosh helped her sit up..she tried to get up n wanted to go to the wash room.as ashutosh waited outside,she came out and looked drained..as she took the tea cup n ashutosh made her eat biscuits..n though she turned her face away..not wanting to eat..he forced her..n then took her fever..102.5!!he looked at her n said"laao i d talk to ur dean..u cant go today"!!and as he took his cell,nidhi spoke"aap rehne deejiye..let me talk plz.."and ashutosh nodded...as nidhi dialled dr Bhagat.."morning sir;this is dr nidhi..i just wanted to know..if ..."and she kept quiet and listened ..ending up with the words"yes sir..i d be there by 8.45."!and then looked at ger husband"jaana hoga..he has lectures n ward duries laid out for us..as today the jr drs are out for a conference...i have to go..duty first..aapne hi sikhaya hai"!!dr ashutosh sighed..as he gave her calpol n said.."i am organising a bath..aur break fast khao..i d go to drop u ..myself"!

As ashutosh himself packed a light lunch for nidhi..some hot coffee in a flask n then as he was coming back..baba confronted him"beta..jab nidhi ki tabiyat nahi theek hai..to kya chutti nahi mil sakti..after all she is entitled to leave..isnt she"??ashutosh paused for a second n then replied"baba..hum dono drs hain..aap jante hain..PG mein leave bahut mushkil hoti hai..aur dr bhagat ne bataya..ki aajjr drs ki conference hai PGI mein..so its nearly impossible. ."and then he entered the bedroom..where nidhi was getting dressed..her hair dishevelled..he held her by the shoulders n said"aaj tumhara test hai..and i know you d succeed. .ek dr ki zindagi bahut mushkil hoti hai..apni tabiyat ki parwah na ker ke ..hum doosron ki jaan bachaate hain..this is what medical profession is all about!!"nidhi nodded..n came out..as she sat for breakfast..eating a lil..n smiling at baba.."chinta nahi kariye baba..i d be fine..phir kal to week end hai..2 din ka rest..khoob aaram karoongi.."!!and she got up..as ashutosh said"baba main drop kerke aata hoon.."!

As he drove he patted her n said"sona hai thoda aur"??and nidhi replied"aap jaante hain..main car me kabhi so nahi sakti..plus i need to be alert..u know dr bhagat..dont u"!!

As dr ashutosh parked the car and walked nidhi in..he looked at her..n said"take care..shaam ko lene aaoonga..try karoonga lunch mei bhi.."and she nodded as she went in...and ashutosh was walkinh back..as he ran into dr bhagat..hurrying down the corridor.."morning sir..how r u here"??ashutosh shook hands n tried to explain"woh actually nidhi ko..."but dr bhagat was in a hurry..."sorry sir..today is v hectic.

Phir baat kartein hain.dr nidhi is doing well..aaj to wards ki incharge hain.."and before ashutosh could say anything..he was gone...

Ashutosh banged his clenched fist against the wall ..n returned..with a heavy heart...his nidhi was suffering in the line of duty..partly because it was he who had forced her to do PG and partly..being his wife..she could not have the luxury of a lil indiscipline. ..she was paying the price of being mrs ashutosh...ashutosh honked in anger...as he drove on...n entered KGh!!

"Hi ashutosh kya hua...looking tense.."??it was a smiling dr mallika who met him at the doorway...he did not answer n went straight into his cabin..asking his schedule...oh!!3 surgeries..he wouldnt be free before 4.30!!"dr ranganath..i want the three surgeries lined up..one after the other..no questions plz..its an order..n a request"he said and went into the canteen for his cystomary black coffee..before the OT!

"Jaante ho kaun assist kar raha hai tumhe??main...kitne dino baad humari jugalbandi..."it was a delighted dr mallika again..ashutosh tried hard to control his temper and said "mallika..hum musical concert me part nahi le rahe..surgery ker rahe hain..and now plz if..."and he kept silent as the coffee arrived...black coffee n green salad...n somwthing echoed in his heart"coffee doodh je bina..jaise zindagi muskurahaton ke bina..."and ge looked up.."plz add some milk n sugar..."and closed his eyes..secretly wishing that mallika would just vanish..its not that he hated her..infact the fact that he was unable to hate her..inspite of all she did..made him hate himself..

"Kya baat hai..itna to poochne ka huq hai..12 saal purani dost ko"!!and ashutosh looked up...his eyes displaying his vulnerability just for a moment"nidhi beemar hai..fever..but had to go on duty..."!!mallika laughed"oh come on ashutosh. .hum sab kaam karte hain beemari mein..aur drs ko careful rehna chahiye..kaise beemar ho gayi nidhi??achchi healthy to lagti hai..

"!!ashutosh could feel the contempt in her voice..but he did not wish to react..as the dr came to inform about the OT and they hot up..as ashutosh whasaaped

IN O.T.TAKE CARE..WILL COME TO PICK U UP AT 5..

And then went in to save a life..n push everything behind...

Nidhi had been diagnosing kids ..discussing cases with dr bhagat..when she suddenly felt completely drained out n looked at her watch...4!!another hour to go..it seemed dr bhagat observed as he said"dr nidhi..u are the material that should work from the heart..not the clock"!!and nidhi bit her lip.."sorry sir...excuse me"as she came out to gulp down one more calpol..she could feel her head throbbing..her temples seem to be bursting..but she had work at hand..n she knew for a dr..it had to be service before self..dr bhagat observed as she walked to the ward...he smiled as he saw iron become steel in the test by fire...

"Chalo...tough grind..now lets eat..tumhe bhi to bhook lagi hogi.

"It was a tired mallika looking at ashutosh as they came out of familiar territory of OT.

ashutosh looked at the watch..4.50.he changed n said curtly"i am off..got to pick nidhi..dr ranganath if there is an emergency call me...otherwise i d come for a round tomorrow. ."and he drove off..leaving mallika looking angrily at the tray of sandwiches she had ordered..

She slumped on her chaor..fatigued n frustrated..she had given this friendship her best years..hoping against hipe that it d blossom into something more ...but...and then all hopes were dashed by that inexplicable infatuation of a mature ashutosh for that intern...who could ever gave told..the turn of fate..

Initially mallika had tried to accept nidhi...afterall ashutosh had never been hers...but the more she saw them together..the more she hated her...each smile of ashutosh..each disappearing frown..each colourful tie..n one saturday..he even came in a tee..it was all the influence of that nidhi...n she couldn't take it any more..the way ashutosh bothered for her

Took care of her. ..mallika couldnt take it anymore...hadn't she deserved this care n concern??why could he never reciprocate her love???oh nidhi!!!!!but mallika smoothened her self..she couldnt let her emotions get out of control...if she wanted to be a part of ashutosh even at work..she had to tolerate nidhi...unless...and mallika looked towards the heaven!!

"Excuse me..where is dr nidhi..."??it was a worried ashutosh asking a nurse on duty...when nidhi appeared with dr Bhagat.."oh sir..hi sorry couldnt talk much in the morning..."said dr bhagat..but dr ashutosh wasnt even listening as he held nidhi's hand and touched her throat...she was still blazing..and flinched a lil embarrassed of his rightful touch in public!!"whats wrong sir"??asked dr bhagat..."actually nidhi has been running high fever...viral i presume.."!!and dr bhagat looked a lil shocked"oh god..i could make out she was a bit unwell...but...i am sorry..you had a strenuous day..."nidhi smiled"its fine sir...yeh pareshaan ho jate hain..i d be fine"and as ashutosh shook hands..he took nidhi n walked to the car...the way she slumped into the seat told him all...

"Chalo..cold bath lo...the fever will go down..aur soup..ya coffee kya logi..."?nidhi didnt reply..as she went into bathe..n suddenly shivered at the touch of cold water...but seemed to relax after a while..as ashutosh came in and lifted her..drying her n putting her favourite white cotton nightie on.."chalo.."she turned away.."nahi khana..bus sona hai..."and ashutosh looked worried..as he pushed a few bites of her favourite poha but she was just not ready..n slumped on to the bed...and her 42 year old husband sat by her putting ice bandages on her blazing forehead..and wiping her face..looking so weak...ashutosh must have fallen asleep on her side...as he felt her fingers in his hair..."uthiye..."and he opened his worried eyes...n nidhi propped herself up..."bread butter khayenge..."??she asked weakly..and he touched her throat..felt her pulseyes the fever was waning...he got up"tum ruko main laata hoon..."!!

The noise in the kitchen got baba n armaan "kya hua ashu..nidhi kaisi hai ab"??and ashutosh said sheepishly"better hai..bread butter khayegi...but mujhe to..."arman smiled"ywh rahi bread aur butter...ab laga ..kuch to seekh pyaar mein"!!and ashutosh smiled weakly...

"Lo...khao"!!he handed over her a bread n tea ...and she ate...with appetite.."dont worry..mera fever aise hi hota hai..jab chadhta hai to v high..but then it goes..dheere dheere jaan jaayenge aap..."and ashutosh syddenly gulped and turned away..not wanting to show his weakness to nidhi...but nidhi got up n held him..."idhar dekhiye...koi vishwas karega..world ka best neurosurgeon ..apni biwi ke viral me ghabra gaya"!!and he just held her..looking into those eyes...n his jaw firm...as he said"tumhe taqleef mein nahi dekh sakta...tum tak pahunchne ke liye hur taqleef ko mujhse ho ke guzarnaa hoga..."!!and nidhi saw the vulnerability of the man who seemed dr hardstone to everyone...she smiled trying to push her tears back..n holding his face in her hands she whispered"jee...ab to hum donno sab jeet chuke..ab koi taqleef nahi hogiHumara pyaar jeet gaya..."."and put her head on his chest...

At almost the same hour...dr mallika laughed after her 3rd scotch...laughed like a maniac..."nidhi...mujhe harnaa nahi pasand...main nahi har sakti...nahi kabhi nahi"...

Chapter Forty two...

Waqt...

To my dear Bawa...

"Nidhi ...kahaan ho..."??it was a worried dr ashutosh who looked around as he awoke and his arm could not feel the softness of nidhi next to him..she emerged from the wash room..bathed n fresh in her pale blue churidaar with a blue sweater..."ready kyun hui..kal raat tak fever high tha...take it easy...aao idhar.."and as dr ashutosh tried to hold her..she pouted.."theek hoon ab...aaj sunday hai..chaliyena kahin ..kal se to phir wahi college ..hospital...lagta hai zindagi fisli jaa rahi hai haathon se"!!ashutosh smiled n held her hands"badi philosophical ho gayi ho...per main maane waala nahi..no outing..aaj only rest..next weekend we d see..chalo leto..i d get breakfast organised..come here n lie down..thats an order..."!and he was gone ...as nidhi lay..closing her eyes..indeed she was feeling drained..

The entire day dr ashutosh sat by nidhi..trying to talk about her college n friends..n finally asked if she d like to call her baba n dadi bua??nidhi almost got up"bhool ke bhi nahi..dadi bua band baja dengi...aur tulsi..haldi..kya kya pilaayengi..plz ..she s worse than MD!!"and ashutosh just held her hand..."tumhe itna bura lagta hai md karna..."??nidhi looked at him...n sighed "aapse jhooth nahi kahoongi..i have never been academically oriented..i myself dont know how i compete..my diagnosis is always on my gut feel..."ashutosh held her"to..tum kya chahti ho..."??nidhi lowered her eyes"aap jaante hain..phir poochte kyun hain..."??ashutosh got up..looking out of the window at the winter sun setting in the lazy afternoon.."janti ho nidhi..mera bachpan...agar usse bachpan kaho to..kaise beeta??akela..tanha...majboor...main nahi jaanta mere maa baap kaun the..per yeh zuroor jaanta hoon...ki unhe shaayad meri zuroorat nahi thi..tabhi to...muflisi..garibi..bhookh me chod diya mujhe akele...aur main...shayad yeh kabhi bhool nahi saka hoon..that insecurity has always lived in me..maine dekha hai..bachchon ko marte hue...you always ask me..why dont i want a baby...sach kahoon..ek to tumhari kum umr..aur meri insecurities...mere man ke dabe hue andhere...darta hoon ..ki pata nahi apne bachche ..ke saath poora insaaf kar paaonga bhi ya nahi...will i make a good father??i mean a good Dad??i really amnt sure...aur buss isiliye...and secondly..i sincerely feel..mujhse shaadi karke tumne apni umr ke doston ko khoya hai..main tumhe waqt se pehle bada hote hue nahi dekhna chahta..i dont want ur shoulders to weigh with responsibility. .aur nidhi..kya hum..hum tum kaafi nahi hain...atleast for a few years more..."??nidhi did not speak...she knew the gloom that still lived in some dark corner of his heart..n she was relieved that ge had begun to let her enter in those crevasses. .as she sighed..he came back to her n held her face"ach ha tum batao..why do u want a baby now..rt now"??nidhi gulped n looked away..."chidiye jaane deejiye..aaj aapne apne dil ke bakhiya udhede..main bhi udhedungi..kisi roz..per aaj nahi..

Shayad tired hoon..."and she lay diwn..closing her eyes..and just as she shut her lids appeared the cute lil girl...the child of her dreams...could dr ashutosh not share this dream...

Will he never ...?and two tears flowed out...ashutosh sitting next to her..gulped as he wiped them n nidhi spoke..holding on to his hand"waqt aur pyaar sab zakhm bhar dete hain...shaayad aapke zakhm bhi mere pyaar se bhar jaayein..."!!and ashutosh just kissed her fingers...

"Arre kya hua...kyun ..amin kahaan"??ashutosh did not answer...just held nidhi n brought her out..and in the drawing room sat dadi bua n col verma...and as they got up..ashutosh smiled n said"dadi bua..yaad rahe aap apni poti ko tulsi pila sakti thi..per meri biwi ko nahi..."!!and cv laughed n added"yes dr ..aapki biwi sirf coffee peeti hai"!!and nidhi smiled as she sat..n dadi bua pried.."bukhaar hai yaa kuch aur..."??and nidhi looked the other way...as dadi bua changed the topic n added"arre woh dr Ranganath ab solankis je saath rahenge...anji ne yehi shart rakhi hai...agar..family badhani hai to..."!!nidhi looked shocked...and as ashutosh added"surprised..dr ranganath ne kych share nahi kiya.."nidhi nodded"aur anji needs to realise...relationship sharton pe nahi chalti...understanding pe chalti hain..."!CV narrated how anji was just not willing to go to Ranga..n he too was adamant...baba smiled n said"pata nahi colonel...per mujhe nahi lagta yeh theek hua..hur rishte ki ek seema hoti hai..ek daayra hota hai...aur jab daayre toote hain to rishte ulajhte hain...sulajhte nahi...and ashutosh seemed to agree...as he looked at nidhi ..but then was called by dadi bua..as she walked to the kitchen..

"Jee dadi bua..."said he...n dadi bua fidgeted..for once a little hesitant...but then braced up..."daaktar..ab zimmedariyon ka ehsaas hona chahiye..aakhir kum umr to hai nahi tumhari...tumhe nahi lagta ki samdhiji ko bhi is ghar ka sannata khalta hoga..

"??and dr ashutosh sighed...as he tried to dodge n said"dadi bua..hur chahat ka ek waqt hota hai..jab iska waqt aayega to yeh bhi poori ho jaayegi..."and nidhi sitting a lil far ...tried to hold back her tears...as her eyes met baba's ...n she could feel him understand the conflict of their dreams desires n fears...

"Dr this is not a gift..yeh to bus ..christmas ka .."said the owner of the pharma firm as dr mallika returned the large hamper..."sorry...ashutosh ke instructions hain..no gifts..."the director sighed as he got up..taking the hamper back...n aed"madam kabhi bhi..kuch bhi kaam ho..to yaad keejiyega..banda haazir hoga..."!!and dr mallika nodded n added"plz close the door after you..."!!

As she walked for the staff meeting in the hall..

Dr ashutosh had detailed plans for the new wing that was going to come up and the drs were all giving their inputs ..it was after a long discussion that they finalised the designs n everyone agreed with dr ashutosh that KGH should have a super speciality children's ward..

Ashutosh smiled as he wound up..adding that KGH will keep their policy of concession for the underprivileged even in the new wing...n as he walked out...there was a dream in his eyes...a dream of seeing dr nidhi head this paediatric unit...but did nidhi share his dream...???ashutosh sighed...

"Dr nidhi..your diagnosis was spot on..brilliant judgment of enciphillitis..very common amongst children.."said dr Bhagat as the group of MD students walked out with him from the ward..n as they wished him bye..nidhi smiled n said"see you sir..see you tomorrow"it had been a month now..n dr Bhagat had begun to have a grudging respect n even affection for his senior's wife..who was his student..what realy impressed him was the fact that nidhi never ever used the clout of her husband. .the world famous dr Ashutosh! !"hey dr nidhi..you seemed a lil preoccupied. .any trouble again"??nidhi smiled n said"no sir..all well..its just that i love wards...but i hate lectures"!!and dr Bhagat laughed at her honesty"dr nidhi..its like saying..u love the softy but you hate the cone"!!and nidhi laughed as she said"sir i d leave...unke aane ja waqt ho gaya ..."!and dr Bhagat smiled as he added"sure...ashutosh sir is blessed to have you.."and the two walked their ways...

"Kya baat ashu...kuch soch raha hai kya"??asked baba..as ashutosh sat fiddling with his i pad..."baba..agle week three day weekend hai..soch raha tha nidhi ko kahi le jaaoon..per kahaan??cant decide..."!and as nidhi's car came..ashutosh put a finger to his lips n whispered:surprise...plz"and baba smiled...

As the family sat for dinner ..baba switched on the tv..and they chatted with the meal of peas n paratha...as nidhi suddenly exclaimed "arre snow fall in.mussoorie...hmmm main to kabhi jaa hi nahi payi mussoorie..."!!and ashu looked at her..wide eyed"really

..not been to mussoorie"??and nidhi spoke"aap to aise keh rahe hain ki mussoorie koi hasrat ganj hai..ki muh utha ke chale gaye "!!and got up to keep baba's plate n get some coffee...as ashutosh's gaze met baba's and the two smiled as baba gave a thums up sign...n ashutosh smiled...the sun of love shining even in the winter night...

"Is weekend kya kaenge..."asked nidhi as she lay in his arms after he had made love to her n was still caressing her ear lobes..he raised his eyebrow n said"hazrat ganj me chaat aur shopping...ya...ek long drive.."??and nidhi nodded seemingly pleased...as she came closer to her husband...n he looked deep into her eyes...understanding the question ...in thise lovely eyes...he kissed her hair n said"kuch sawaalon ke jawaab sirf waqt de paata hai..to abhi ke liye tumhara sawaal waqt pe chod dein...bolo to"??and nidhi smiled...as she hid in his bare chest n nodded...quite sure that one day her love will make the sun shine n all darkness will clear away...n then even in dr ashutosh's dreams ..there will arise n appear that cute lil baby in pink frock...with curly hair...cuddling up to him n crooning "papppa..."!!

"Nidhi chal na coffee peene.."t was dr anita who spoke on thursday afternoon..as wards got over..nidhi smiled ..yes coffee on a cold afternoon.

Lovely ..but then as she saw the files she added"you guys go..i d complete the work n join..dr bhagat hates incomplete work..."and dr anita jibed affectionately"haan tujhe to middle aged drs ki likes dislikes sabse zyaada pata hain na"!!and nidhi laughed as Anita made a face..n gave her a pat..nidhi could see dr Akshat look at her..wirh a strange look...he seemed to be smitten by her...she sighed...poor boy!!why couldnt he understand..she was happily married to the only man she ever loved...nidhi sighed as she got on with the work...and emerged half an hr later having met dr Bhagat ..who smiled n added"dr nidhi..you are an asset..i have never gad such a student..great..now go..have some fun with ur friends.."nidhi smiled as she walked..looking back as she closed the door...n rather surprised to find the DR bhagat looking at her with deep reflective eyes!

"Guys. .kitni sweet hai yeh coffee yuck"!!said nidhi..as akshat looked at her..n dr zeenat sniped"bhai tere dr hardstone to black bitter coffee peete hain.."nidhi made a face n laughed"thats hustory...ab normal mocha peete hain..woh bhi mere haathon ki"!!and for a moment she was lost in their coffee sessions..by the bedroom window..most priceless moments...

"Achcha nidhi yeh bata..how does it feel driving a merc..woh bhi latest model red..swanky"!!asked anita...n nidhi really laughed recalling her old santro..that she still missed"jaante ho..car doesnt matter..what matters is car me kiske saath drive pe jaa rahe ho...aur yeh mujhe dr hardstone ne sikhaya"!!all giggled"tu bhi HARDSTONE kehti hai sir ko..really"??n nidhi bit her lip...n said"ab hardstone hain to choco lava cake kahoon kya"!!!

"Achcha dr nidhi...aapko phool itte pasand hain..does dr ashutosh get u flowers.."??nidhi was a lil taken aback at this question from akshat...she kept quiet for a moment n then replied"nahi woh phool nahi laate mere liye...main unke garden mein phool ugaati hoon...aur phir woh wahaan hur subah chai peete hain..aur yn phoolon ko admire karte hain...n guys agar aap logon ki enquiey khatm ho gayi hoto main chaloon..i have to meet my friend Rohan..jo uss din aaya tha"!!dr anita asked"one last query...maine ..hum sab ne suna tha..middle aged men bade shakki hote hain..dr hardstone doesnt mind tera Rohan ke saath hazrat ganj jana"??nidhi got up..."main Rohan ke sath hazrat ganj nahi jaa rahi..usse apne ghar le ja rahi hoon..jahaan dr ashutosh aur hum chaai samose khaayenge aur bahut sari baatein karenge...but guys tum log nahi samjhoge..."and then as she got up..zeenat added with a smile"tere dr hardstone ko samajhna mushkil hi nahi naamumkin hai"!!and nidhi broke into a laugh adding "yess ..woh hain hi aise...tabhi to main hoon..dr nidhi ashutosh...forever"!!

"Arre waah...Rohan..gr8 bhai..tum gaayab kahaan ho jate ho...nidhi samose laao na.."it was dr ashutosh emerging from his car into the hall...n as he shook hands..nidhi giggled"aapko kaise pata samose layi hoon..."ashutosh tousled her hair n said"Rohan tum aur samosa...that is what u guys call a combo"!!and Rohan laughed"gr8 sirji...gr8"!!and ashutosh said"bas abhi aaya change kar ke..."and nidhi shouted"kapde rakhe hain..aur yeh suit dry cleaning basket me daaliyega..."and ashutosh smiled.."kaho to main khud bhi chala jasoon dry clean hone..."and nidhi pouted"chup chaap nahaa ke aaiye..kahi bhaga nahi jaa raha Rohan aapka.."ashutosh smiled n entered his bedroom...and then a thought struck him as he opened nidhi's wardrobe n looked for her things...her clothes..under garments..shoes. ..n then clised it with a naughty glint...yes a surprise was over due...he would love to see her squeal n hug him...

Ashutosh emerged in his black tracks n olive green sweater...as he saw Rohan chatting with baba..explaining him how dofficult it was to meet quarterly targets"..probably more difficult than brain surgery..".baba added!!

Rohan bit into a samosa ..as nidhi served tea to dr ashutosh n he looked at her...both freezing in that moment...it often happened during the feneral xourse of the day...or while nidhi slept blissfully on his chest..that ashutosh would sulently thank god...for he had been blessed with all he could ever desire...

Rohan n baba coughed n baba commented"bhai..samoson pe romance..waah"!!and nidhi ran into the kitchen while ashutosh blushed...

"Sirjee..main soch raha tha..ek din day picnic ke liye aaiye ghar..col verma ke lawn mei khaayenge lunch..what say"??and nidhi's eyes transfigured with joy. ..ashutosh could never ever miss the reflection in those eyes..as he said"zuroor...agle sunday...iss weekend to zara busy hoon..."Rohan asked"per yeh to long weekend hai..monday bhi chutti..."nidhi pouted"arre Rohan brain surgeons ke liye no holidays...per aayenge..baba se milne..achcha bata anji...phine nahi leti aajkal...kaisi hai"??

Rohan turned serious.."dr Ranganath aa to gaye hain..wahaan but i dont think..there is a thaw..anji ji to fashion house mei hi rehti hain zyaada...aur woh aapke kgh mei...ek main hi akela aawaara hoon"!!and suddenly someone slapped his head n added"ach ha meri jaan mujhe bhool gaya tu"!!!and Rohan got up to hug Armaan..as they all discussed next sunday lunch at col verma's "mughal garden"as Rohan called it!!"bhai wahaan koi phool nahi todiyega..warna col verma apni gun nikaal lenge"!!and armaan repartied"arre ab kya..unke bageeche ka sabse umdaa phool to humare ghar me hai ab"!!and ashutosh looked at nidhi...

At night as she was arranging her wardrobe..she was a lil surprised at dr ashutosh taking interest..asking about her things n his...till she queried"yeh aaj kapdon ki itni chinta kyun ho gayi..main hoon na..."and ashutosh joked"biwiyon ka kya bharosa kisi din chali gayi waapas apne papa ke paas..to main to night suit me hi reh jaaoonga"!!and he laughed..but stopped dead as he saw nidhi hiccupp with tears..."hey jaan kya hua"??and he held her"i was just joking...u know that..."but nidhi looked at him...with fiercely intense eyes..."kabhi aisa nahi kahiyega...jab tak saans hsi..aapke paas ..apke sath hoon..."and dr ashutosh did not reply..he just hugged her...putting her head on to his chest..n caressing her back..as they both could hear the words I LOVE YOU..though neither of them spoke...it was the music of love..the sound of music...ashutosh nidhi..humesha humesha...

"Nidhi...work is soon gonna be over...jaanti hai..main..zeenat aur Alka Agra ja rahe hain..kal subah..shatabdi se..oh we are so excited. ...aur jaanti hai..Akshat n his group is going to Delhi...pooch raha tha tera plan...kya hai"!!nidhi seemed irritated.."he needn't worry ki mera plan kya hai...woh jaaye jahaan jaana hai usse...why does he have to bother about me"?

Aruna seemed to understand nidhi's agitation..as she put a hand on her shoulder n said"kya hua...tu kahi nahi jaa rahi"??nidhi took a deep breath..how she had secretly yearned for a short trip...maybe just till Allahabad...but then she knew dr ashutosh had a tough weekend..after all he was the best neurosurgeon. ...she tried to smile as she said"yaar..unki surgeries lined up hain...you know na..he s a big dr..head of kgh..itni zimmedariyaan...uneasy lies the head that wears the crown..."!!Aruna nodded as she left...only to collide with dr Bhagat who had probably overheard their conversation. .."sorry sir..i am sorry"said dr aruna..as dr Bhagat came in..n stood in front of nidhi..as she got up .#he looked directly into her eyes n said"dr nidhi...aapki generation mei itni understanding...its rare ..v rare...yes sir is really lucky to have you..."nidhi felt a lil awkward...as she pushed her hair back ...she had been observing dr Bhagat warming towards her...was it appreciation to her work...was he too smitten by her...or was it something else...she wondered...

It was an hour later at about 5 that she rung up dr ashutosh wanti g to remind him to pick her up...as he had sent her merc for servicing...he didnt take her call...but then whassapp ed"yaad hai..pick up at 6.sharp"!nidhi bit her lip...it seems he was busy..in a meeting...oh his work..it seemed unending..n nidhi wondered if they d even be abke to take a long drive that he had promised her...nidhi felt tears stinging her eyes..as she completed her file work n got up for the last round!!

Dr Ashutosh had packed two bags..one for himself n one for nidhi..he had kept her churidar kurtas..shoes..under garments night wear..a shawl..two sweaters but couldnt find her socks...he sighed...but then his face lit up...imagining the joy in those lovely eyes...he zipped his suit case..two jeans..a khaki..two pullovers...and yes..his favourite tracks..."ho gaya beta..."??ot was baba who asked as he entered the ashni bedroom...'jee baba..all set.."baba smiled as he asked"i hope nidhi ko pata nahi hai..."ashutosh smiled n said no...as Armaan entered n said"bookings confirmed...ticket print out liya...aur haan return flt tuesday early morning ho gayi hai..you can join work by 10.30...aadha ghanta to tere patients wait kar hi sakte hain...aur dr s hain na"!!Ashutosh furrowed his brow for a moment..as he said"main ek last round leke aata hoon hospital se..."as naba sighed...

**********"mallika..there are no surgeries scheduled till wednesday...and emergency can be handled by you...i d join by tuesday..dont worry..."and as Mallika asked"kahin jaa rahe ho...baahar"??ashutosh kept quiet...recalling her midnight call in simla..n he just said"chalta hoon..see u on tuesday.."and dr mallika stood frozen..

She knew a long lonely weekend lay ahead of her..it meant being away from regular work..and being immersed in more whiskey...ufff life..was painful indeed...mallika stepped out into her car...an old model merc..a silver one..recalling how dr ashutosh had accompanied her when she had bought it...she sighed n onned the fm...the song said it all...

"Rula ke gaya sapna mera...

Baithi hoon kab ho savera...rula ke gaya sapna mera..."!!was there a dawn to her dark night...will the sun of ashutosh 's love ever shine again in her life...??she drove on..as her eyes dried up...n her jaw seemed set...she seemed to promise herself a sunny morning one day...even if it meant...

Nidhi was closing the file room n walking to the car park to wait for her husband. .nearly all the md students had left..after all they were all in a hurry to go off...but nidhi smiled she had no complaints..she d clean up..cook for baba ..n yes wait for the free moments of dr ashutosh. She had no complaints..she knew he gave nearly all his time other than hospital time to her..it had not missed her that he now hardly ever went for classical music concerts or to his favourite british council library...he loved to laze with her at home...watch her do things..yes he read..specially before sleeping..but he did come to bed sooner than he did some months ago...n he always cocooned her in his bear hug...

Nidhi was surprised to find Aruna..lata..akshat..laxmi..prabha..n many others still in the drive way.."arre u guys didnt go..."??and they laughed n showed their ice creams"baskin robbins...dear workaholic"!!said dr prabha...n nidhi laughed"cheats..mujhe nahi bulaya...v bad"and dr akshatcame forward with his cone..."plz have a bite..."but nidhi smiled awkwardly..n said"i was just joking...i have to go.."and just as she was walked..she was nearly blinded by the headlights of a fast approaching car..a cab..and as it screeched to a halt..to her shock..out came dr Ashutosh. .."arre aap??aapki car ..whats happened"??and ashutosh just smiled..holding her elbow he said.."enquiry commission baithaogi to flight miss ho jasyegi...:"!!nidhi was surprised...she asked"flight...to whare..when..why"??ashutosh smiled ..nodding to her class mates as they wished him..a few even coming closer..and he raised his eyebrow n retorted"humari flt..to dehradun..1 hr 20 mins away..we r going to mussoorie..aur kyun...yeh "rest was lost in nidhi's delighted squeal...as she jumped n put her arms around him..hugging him...and ashutosh held her for a moment before letting her go...n she blushed ..waving to her mates who shouted"lucky you..."and she was almost pushed into the cab...zooom to mussoorie...

"It was at 9 p.m. that they landed at the Dehradun airport...small but nidhi could figure the sillouthes of hills around...as ashutosh collected the luggage..n emerged..they c.were ushered y a cabbie of an innova from SAVOY mussoorie...nidhi held on to ashutosh...wanting to ask so many questions but he just put a finger to her lips n said"just sit back n enjoy..its a lovely drive i believe...ek ghante me pahunch jaayenge..lets order dinner..you d be hungry by the time you reach...bolo kya..."nidhi thought for a while as he dialled n added"naan n paneer ..shahi paneer..aur kuch bhi..."and he smiled as he repeated..adding mixed vegetables n kheer as dessert..."!!

As they climbed up..the road truly serpentine..the driver stopped ..."sir yahaan se neeche dekhiye..dehra dun ki lights..."and as the couple came out..they seemed mesmerised at the millions of lights that shimmered thru the mist..and ashutosh pointed towards the mountains...where the lights of mussoorie and far flung hill villages shone..n there the two seemed to be standing in space..gazing at a galaxy below...n luminous stars above..and what made it more beautiful was that dr ashutosh put his hand around her ...and whispered.."khush ho na...weekend plan se"??and nidhi hugged him...as the cabbie smiled n her hubby blushed in embarrassment. .

It was after dinner at the huge dining hall of Savoy that the couple were walked to their suite..on the ground floor..with a huge tower above...it really seemed a fairy land..ashutosh politely turned down the manager's offer to show the hotel around..he ited'we r tired..tomorrow will explore on our own.."!!

And it was an hour later that a refreshed nidhi sat in his lap by a huge french window as he sipped the coffee ...and both gazed at the elm trees outside...

There was a knock...ashutosh opened n a waiter got in logs of wood to make a blazing fire in the old fire place...and nidhi had a child like wonder in her eyes..as aahutosh tipped him..the waiter..a kindly old hill man spoke"shaabji..raat ko bahir nahi jaana..kehte hain..bhoot ghoomta hai...yeh hotel british zamaane ka...ghadar ke time bahut maar kaat hui thi...waise din mei koi darr nahi...din nei bhoot sab sota"!!and laughed...as ashutosh smirked n closed the door..nidhi asked.."aap padhenge nahi..."??and he smiled"ab itni door..weekend mei mai medical research padhne to aaya nahi...kyun"!!and then laughed"thak gaye hain hum dono..aao lets sleep..come "!!

As they lay and ashutosh covered themselves in a duvet..a lovely floral one..he switched off the light...n nidhi asked"light jalne deejiye na...plz"!!and he relented..but not before a furtowed look...as he found nidhi on his chest even before he could pull her...he was surprised..but held to her..caressing her shoulders..n holding her waist...as his hands loosened n nidhi could hear his rhythmis breathing...he was fast asleep...she shifted..turned...but sleep evaded her...till she heard a distant church gong...it was 12...oh god!!she shook ashutosh...he opened his tired eyes..."kya baat hai..are u unwell..."??she shook her head"nahi..bus toilet jaana hai..."ashutosh quizzed "to go...amin what can i do...kych problem hai...urine infection or..."??

And a pouting nidhi andwered"mujhe darr lag raha hai...woh...waiter...ne kya kaha tha..."!!and dr ashutosh laughed...freely..loud n free...she had rarely seen him laugh so loud...n as she pouted he said"ohhh to isiliye mujhse pooch rahi thi...padhna nahi hai..aur light!!!oh god nidhi..tum bhi na...koi darta hai aisi stupid stories se...

"!!and nidhi tried to smile bravely...n said"nahi..main bhi nahi darti...buss..."and ashutosh turned serious n said..."udhar kya hai nidhi...kaun hai"???and as nidhi screamed in fear...n hugged him tight..closing her eyes...ashu laughed again..holding her..."arree sorry sorry..i was teasing you..dekho koi nahi hai..aur mere hote hue...who can harm you. ..bolo to..."??and nidhi smiled weakly ..holding on to him...but insisted"light plz..."and ashutosh held her...caressing her protectively...as he watched those lovely eyes close magically...n long after he had kissed them..he kept looking captivated...the child like acts of his nidhi...they always enthralled him...and he finally slept holding her tight...being her inseparable part..her shoeld...her friend philosopher n guide...her ashutosh...only her's..forever her's!!!

Chapter Forty four...

pal bhar mein ye kya ho gaya...

Ashutosh n nidhi sat in the lawn sipping tea and having crisp aaloo parathas ..as nidhi smiled n said "aaj kya karenge hum.."??and ashutosh replied "jo tum kaho..iss trip me..i m all yours.."!!and nidhi pouted"achcha ..sirf iss trip mein??maine to socha tha poori zindagi ke liye mere hain.."!!and she laughed as dr ashutosh took up the newspaper n said"jaao..ready ho jao..phir chalenge baahar"!!and nidhi got up n tried to kiss his cheek as he held her away.."hey nidhi..waiter aa jayega.."!!and she wrinkled her nose n said"saaf kahiye na..mujhse door reh sakte hain..paper se nahi"!!and ashutosh was lost in the newspaper as nidhi skipped n hummed a new song..ashutosh tried to understand the lyrics but they seemed beyond him..and he shook his head...

It was a little later that nidhi in her olive green n crimson churidar kurta..with a black sweater around her shoulders n ashutosh in jeans n grey jacket looked stunning as they walked hand in hand on the camels back road ...n ashutosh pointed to the clear snow covered peaks..n then sat under a huge deodar..savouring the silence ..as nidhi spoke"kitna achcha lagta hai..bus hum dono..aur yeh khamoshi...door tak koi nahi..."!!ashutosh ran his finger tips through her hair n said..with mischief in his eyes"cant be sure ..ki sirf hum dono hi hain..kya pata ki cemetry hai jo wahaan..wahaan se koi bhoot aa jaye..kyun"??and nidhi closed her eyes n hugged him...as he laughed..but she pulled him to walk back to civilisation of mall road..and immiediately bought a bhutta..a roasted corn cob!!as she bit ..ashutosh mocked"darr ka ilaaj bhutta"!!and nidhi replied'aap to lenge nahi..acidity hogi aapko"!!and ashutosh replied..biting into the cob.."dont worry..maine subah hi zinetac leli thi..din bhar tumhare sath junk jo khana tha...chalo..lets walk"!!but nidhi insisted.."ek bite aur"!!and as he obliged she clicked a selfie!!and he just glared in disbelief!!

"Aage ek chinese joint hai...i guess its good..."but nidhi disagreed"na..lets go to that omlette corner..hotel ne bhi tecommend kiya tha...aapko pasand bhi hai..what say"!!and they walked on...as nidhi hummed"ISHQ WALA LOVE"!!ashutosh teased her"kya lyrics hain!!no sense atall"!!but nidhi argued"kyun..sense kyun nahi hai ISHQ WALA..SURKH WALA FAIZ WALA LOVE..HOTA HAI KO LOVE SE ZYADA WAISE WALA LOVE"!!and ashu laughed"tumhari generation janti bhi hai Faiz ko"??nidhi pouted"koi writer the..kya farq padta hai Faiz ya chetan bhagat"!!and ashu smliled"waah kya comparison..faiz aur chetan "!!!but the argument had to wait as they reached the omlette corner n soon sat biting into soft spanish omlette n bread with hot tea!!!"hmmm.tastyyy...wow maza aa gaya...i wish..."stopped nidhi...as her husband looked up and asked"kya wish hai??yehi rehne ki"??n she shook ger head in refusal n said"naa..i was wishing ki kaas armaanji aur baba bhi hote..they d have loved this omlette bread"!!and she saw a strange softness descend into her middle aged hubby's eyes!!

As they sauntered thru the coty...walking up to chaar dukaan..the old market..high up in the mountains..as the climb was tough..nidhi panted..and ashutosh held her...as he said "chalo waapas ..lets take a cab up tomorrow...theek hai"??and nidhi seemed to agree ..as they walked down hill...and the sun seemed ready to set...n chill descended..as ashutosh zipped up his jacket n put the buttons of nidhi's cardigan..and as they reached the far end of the mall...Savoy just a turn away...nidhi smiled n said"ab..ab kya??"and ashutosh smiled n replied'tea dinner...n news"!!and nidhi left him in mock anger n ran into the hotel gates...as ashutosh smiled n hummed his wife's favourite song"ISHQ WALA..SURKH WALA..FAIZ WALA LOVE...HOTA HAI JO LOVE SE ZYADA WAISE WALA LOVE"!!

"Beta come for dinner..."said mr Solanki to anji n ranganath as anji slumped onto the chair n said"mujhe mann nahi hai..i am tired"!!and dr ranganath replied"12 ghante fashion house me rahogi to...tired hogi hi"!!and anji looked at him n said"ohhh to kya karoon??bachche khilaaoon??i m so bored...wahi ghar office..office ghar...aur nidhi ko dekhiye..jeejaji mussoorie leke gaye hain usse..aur ek hum hain..."!!as anji got up n went into hr room...as ranga dipped into the dinnner with a glum face n a heavy heart...as Shyama ji looked at him..trying to understand his angst!!

"I dont want dinner..."it was mallika telling her maid as she retired...into her lonely bedroom...her large empty bed...just as her life. ..her gaze fell on the photo colage of her college days..she n ashutosh at oxford...together in a restaurant...n memories seemed to flood her lonely eyes..as she closed them n offed the light...and lay on her pillow ..opening the gateway to tears...the begining of another long n lonely night...when she d have nothing except the memories of her ashutosh...while he...where was he??mallika felt furrowed...n dialled baba's land line...

Kaka picked it

"Kaka..ashutosh hai kya"?

"Arre beta woh to nidhi beti ke saath gaya hai baahar..."!

"Kahaan kaka..kab gaye"??

"Kal..ab yeh to nahi oara ki kahaan..per lo tum armaan se baat karo"and armaan cleared his throat n took the phone

"Yes mallika...Ashutosh gaya hai nidhi ko leke ..hills mein...ab kahaan ..yeh to hume bhi nahi pata...aakhir shadi hui hai..dono ko huq gai waqt butane ka sath sath akele..hahaan koi disturb na kare..."!!and mallika banged the phone...

Just about 2 months back they had gone to simla...n now somewhere else...why??was it just desire...or did ashutosh really love that infernal kiddish intern so much!!how could he???but the recent changes..the smile on his face..his diet..his relaxed ways...it all showed how nidhi had changed ashutosh..her ashutosh...ashutosh who was desired n deserved only by her...but life...ufff!!!!!!!and tears flowed out helplessly!!!

"Brush kiya..bhutte ke baad"??asked ashutosh...as nidhi flaunted the nightie that she had bought...n said "aap mere nursery ki head mistress jaise hain"!!and he laughed as he hot up to keep his coffe cup and finally nidhi irritated with his neglect"dekhiye to meri nightie..achchi hai na"??and he raised his eyebrow.."nightie mei kya achcha bura...its night wear..."!!

"I mean..isnt it...isnt it...hmmm dont u like me in it"??

Ashu laughed as he replied"you dont need to wear a seductive nightie for me...tum jaisi ho..mujhe bahut pasand ho...u are not an item girl..biwi ho meri..."and nidhi giggled as she sat in his lap..and both looked at the lights of a far off village as ashutosh slowly worked at her nightie straps...and carried her to bed...her fingers scraping his beard...n then she closed her eyes...as she held him close ..and shut her eyes to everything else...he was ger today n..tomorrow...and ashutosh kissed her eyes...and said what he rarely said"jaan...i love you..."!!and nidhi bit her lip...n answered"aapki khamoshi samajhti hoon main...kehne ki zaroorat nahi..."and the rest was lost in their mutual supernova...

"Kya soch rahi ho nidhi...aur nighties khareedni hain"??mocked ashutosh ..as he gazed at nidhi lying curled up in bed...lost in thoughts...as he yawned after making love to her again in the wee hrs ..she did not reply ..just smiled...but crossed her fingers..she herself was not sure for what..as he got up n said in a typical husbandly manner "chai"??n she put on the gown n said"banati hoon..."!!

It was much later as they lined up for the cable car that nidhi insisted upon that Ashutosh remarked giving her money.."purse kahaan hai tumhara"??nidhi bit her lip "ghar pe...all important stuff...aapne time hi kahaan diya..."!!and before he could ask or reply ..the cable car arrived n nidhi rushed in..with him following her n telling her to watch her step..

As they looked around at the doon valley from the gun hill...nidhi seemed enthralled...and ashutosh held her by the shoulders n said"bolo kya kya karna hai"??nidhi's eyes danced..."hunsenge to nahi...ek pic leni hai..hill costume mein"!!and as a half amused ..half shocked ashu gazed ..she was gone...to emerge as a hill girl...with a basket at her bag..n the photographer nagging ashu"sir...aap.."??as he looked at him doubtfully...and ashutosh gave him the 500 chips n said "prints de dena raat tak..savoy suite no.1"!!

"Enjoyed??ki kuch tammanna baaki hai"??asked ashutosh...as nidhi yawned n collected her shopping bags...giggling like a school girl ..n replied"mazaa aa gaya...mai to dukhi thi..ki boring weekend hoga ..but aapne to ..what a surprise"!!ashutosh ruffled her hair n added"lucknow mei mann lagega ab"??and nidhi held his hand...as he raised his eyebrow..she said...a deep seriousness replacing the childlike joy"lucknow ki barabari koi jagah nahi ker sakti...tapti loo ho..yaa hazrat ganj ki bheed..lucknow ghar hai humara..woh sheher jisne myjhe aap diye aapka saath diya...humara ghar diya...pannchii kitna bhi udd le...shaam ko waapas ghonsle mei jaake sote hain..."!!and aahutosh didnt say anything...he just put his arms around her...n together they looked at the snow on the deodaars!!

It had been nearly a month since they returned from mussoorie when nidhi was rudely shocked by a wailing n nervous dadi bua over the phone.."beta tu aur daktar jaldi aao..anji

..."and nidhi did not care to lusten anything else as she signalled to ashutosh n said"anji...i think its something major..chaliye"!!

It was within 20 minutes that nidhi n ashutosh were examini g anji's vitals...she had fainted. .n nidhi looked at her hubby...trying to signal him silently...he seemed to understand as he said"solanki saahib..i feel some tests are required...aap anji ko nidhi ke sath ..bhej deejiye..i d get them done..."Solanki nodded but added"dr Ranganath aate hi honge..apni behan se milne gaye the..."nidhi looked at anji..as she opened her eyes n looked at shyama n nidhi...ashutosh drove back to kgh..promising to send the car soon..

"Anji...u r pregnant..at least 5 to 6 weeks"said nidhi as she drove her friend..."ab kya"??anji looked glum"ab kya...dr ranganath to laddoo baantenge...zindagi to meri tabah hogi...n now nidhi tu mujhe lecture nahi dena motherhood pe plz..."

At LGH what nidhi had predicted was confirmed by the urine reprt ...and as dr Ranganath rushed in..his agony changed to joy...n he hugged his wife...who seemed disenchanted. .

Ashutosh coughed..suggesting nidhi should withdraw...

And as she said"jaati hoon main apne college.."ashu observed nidhi to be a lil lost...he bit hus lip..trying to read her thoughts...

The next two weeks were hectic with nidhi going to counsel anji every other day after classes...n often she was so tired that she had to be literally forced fed by ashutosh...

"Ek driver rakh deta hoon..kum se kum college tak y can catch up some sleep..ab term exams r around the corner...its going to be tough ..."nidhi refused"na..i d manage..waise bhi main car mein so nahi pati

..aap jante hain...chaliye...ab raat ho gayi"!!as she kept the coffee cup ...n ashutosh asked looking closely"tum kuch theek nahi ho aajkal...kya baat "??nudhi yawned "nothing...exam..idhar...udhar anji...bus ...worried hoon.."ashutosh smoothened her hair...and drew her to him"so jaao..things will sort themselves out...haan maine dr sudhir recommend kiye gain dr ranganath aur anji ko..."and he kissed nidhi...as she said"thand bahut hai..."and he seemed a lil surprised. ..

"Suniye...aaj mujhe drp ker denge..armaanji meri car le gaye hain..shaam ko de denge ya puck jer lenge"!!asked nidhi as she was wearing her sari..n ashutosh adjusted his tie...n then with a sudden unexpected jab of passion..held her semi dressed state...n hus index finger found its way into her exposed navel..as he pressed ..she bit her lip..n mumbled"kya..aap bhi..."and ashutosh with drew..but not before the strength of his finger had explored the depth of her navel and as he caressed her stomach..he felt her shudder...kissing ger..he let her go...and said"chalo ab..i m getting late"!!as nidhi pulled up the sari..to cover her navel...n came out..to sit in his BMW

"Nidhi...kal lets go to Ranga n anji..kets see kya haal hain..aur dinner dadi bua se keh dena...what say..col verma se mile kaafi din ho gaye"!!spoke ashutosh...as he negotiated the traffic...nidhi did not reply...he looked up...shocked to findd her fast asleep...her head resting against the door...

Ashutosh could not believe...nidhi sleeping in a car!!!!

Chapter Forty five...

"Nidhi...kya hua hai...so gayi..car mei"??it was dr Ashutosh,visibly concerned as he touched his sleeping wife's cheek...n she opened her eyes...n got up with a start"arrey...i dunno kaise...aaj bus aaankh lag gayi..aap jaaoye..thanx..shaam ko..armaanji ..nahi to i d manage..u don't. ."!!ashutosh stopped her midway as the car stood in front of the academic block of her college;and he said"dont worry...agar armaan nahi aaya..to i would come..dont take a cab..theek hai"??and she nodded as ashutosh held her hand just a lil longer..his eyes searching her...n asking a question silently"tum theek to ho ..."!!nidhi got down a lil awkward as other students were waving to her n wishing dr Ashutosh..

As nidhi got down n walked looking back to wave at dr ashutosh..he backed the car n drove off...but his heart was not at peace...as he hummed

"Kuch to hai zuroor..

Dil mera itna majboor..."!

"Ok..dr Ranganath..its a deal...i would live through the torture of having this baby...but two conditions...forst..you would not stop me from working for as long as i can..n secondly.."said Anji..looking at her parents n dr ranganath at the doning table.."after its born...you would take care of it..ab aap chahe meri ma se help lein..ya apni maa se..its your choice...main apni lifestyle nahi change karoongi aur..fine"??a helpless dr ranganath looked at his in laws...as Mr Solanki looked dismayed n irritated ..shyamaji signalled to Ranga to be calm..her eyes conveying it all in silence..and as Ranga nodded,anji got up n said"i am working...plz doodh ke liye nag nahi kariyega.."!!and a devastated Shyama looked at Solanki saheb .."dekh leejiye apni ziddi beti ko..."!!

"Kya baat Ashutosh..aaj no lunch ...coffee peeoge"??it was dr mallika looking at him ...standing at the cabin door...n he stood up...as she smiled n said"coffee"??and as she got two cups..he somehow could not refuse...

Mallika sipped the coffee ..yrying to wait for the right moment to start a conversation. ..dr ashutosh looked up n asked"you are managing the medicine supply well..good..tell the store keeper n dr Ranganath to maintain the inventory list carefully...the govt policy on drugs has become v strict..n we must be sure that the supply we have is absolutely the best..so dont be lax..."!mallika nodded n changed the topic"baba kaise hain..."??ashutosh seemed list..his mind still hung with nidhi..but ge responded as mallika repeated the question..."he s fine...ab nidhi hai to ghar mei chehal pehal rehti hai..everyone is delighted..."mallika looked at her friend of 12 years n asked"aur tum...tum nidhi ki khwaaishon ko uski umangon ko..."ashutosh got up mid way.."don't worry mallika...nidhi aur mere baare mei chinta nahi karo..hum ek doosre ko jaante bhi hain aur samajhte bhi hain...umr ka farq hone se ho sakta hai zindagi se humari ummeedein thodi juda hon..per zindagi ka yeh safar hum ek doosre ke bina doch bhi nahi sakte..so you do not worry...chalo..i have to go for the administrative meeting...u not coming"??and mallika nodded as she extended her hand to take ashutosh's mug but he took his empty mug n walked out...

"So students..i would like you people to study these 12 case histories of chicken pox complications due to bacterial infection...n then we d meet in the lecture room..in an hr ..come on get to work.."it was dr Bhagat..crisp n strict as usual..but as he left the MD batch..his eyes lingered on dr nidhi...his favourite student...always hard working..always conscientious. .always the best...but today she seemed jaded..just a little..but he wondered what was wrong...

The group studied..discussed..n argued while they studied the cases n then looked at certain slides..and just as they got up to leave for the lecture room...Akshat's face lost its colour as...

*************dr ashutosh was announcing the new regime for duties ..the rotation of night shifts and listening to the demand of the nursing head ms d souza "dr sir..i need more nurses in the paede ward..at least 6 more"!!and as dr ashutosh nodded..his cell buzzed...and he looked at the caller...dr Bhagat...his brow furrowed as he took the cell...n almost instantly his face lost colour..."yes Dr Bhagat...I am coming..right away..."and without a word to anyone he declared"i have to leave..dr ranganath any surgery lined up"??dr ranganath replied"no sir..you r done for the day..but whats happened sir"??

Dr ashutosh looked back as he walked to his cabin...and replied "nidhi...nidhi is unconscious. ..i need to rush"!!and within moments the dean of KGH was racing in his BMW to Sanjay Gandhi PHI...to be by the side of his wife..his nidhi...as he wrecked his nerves...what had happened to her...??????

Chapter Forty six...

Papa...

Dr Radha Choudhary had been examining nidhi when a rather tense dr ashutosh entered PGI and asked the classmates of his wife where she was..and as he was directed to the ward he met dr Bhagat standing outside ..his brow furrowed.."glad u came sir..she seemed jaded since morning...n while they were discussing chicken pox,she just fainted..apparently ..."before dr Bhagat could complete,dr Radha emerged n smiled at dr ashutosh. .."sir can i have a word with you "??Dr ashutosh was just too tense n anxious as he retorted"dr i d like to know what is wrong with my wife...is it a low hb..."??dr Radha tried to regain ger composure and looking at both her seniors answered.."sir..it seems..you do not know..as she too didnt...dr nidhi is 5 weeks pregnant"!and as a relaxed smile came on dr Bhagat's face..dr Ashutosh seemed completely emotionless as he asked"is she conscious?can i meet her"??dr Radha nodded"yes..you may..but let me tell you that she seemed v nervous when she came to know of this...came v close to an anxiety attack..her bp is also a little high ...however i have prescribed all that was required..rest you can consult a specialist.."dr Ashutosh nodded n said"thank you doctor"and looked at dr Bhagat ..a little embarrassed and then as dr Bhagat smiled n said"sir..isn't that a wonderful piece of news...or is dr nidhi not keen??after all she is quite young and..."dr Ashutosh did not reply and entered the room...

Nidhi was lying on the examination table ..looking quite white..was it fear or shock..she herself didn't know!!but yes as dr Radha had informed her of her pregnancy..a news she had been waiting for each day of the past 10 months..a moment she had secretly prayed for...n yet when she heard it...the over riding emotion was not euphoria or joy...it was fear and apprehensivion as to how would dr ashutosh react??would he be angry..would he shout..would he force her to have an...???nidhi's eyes were still grappling with these questions when dr ashutosh entered ...in his brown suit..he stood by her n asked quietly"kaisi ho ab??are you very weak"??nidhi tried to search some emotion in that baritone...but there seemed to be nothing that was visible...dr ashutosh seemed to be masked..his emotions completely covered in a mask..he did not display anything..neither joy nor anger..not even irritation..he helped her get up n then looking at his watch he asked"ghar chalogi ya class hai"??nidhi put her chunni on and replied"i want to go home..today..plzzz"

Dr Ashutosh did not say anything...he just walked out with nidhi following him...as he came to dr Bhagat..he spoke"dr ..today nidhi wishes to go home...i hope she d join from tomorrow..."dr Bhagat corrected"sir..tomorrow is weekend..now monday..."and dr Ashutosh nodded as he walked with nidhi following him quietly...her head bowed in silence...

Nidhi looked nervously at dr ashuotosh as he drove in absolute silence...a silence that seemed to be unbearable for nidhi...n she finally collected the courage to speak..."kuch kahenge nahi??itne naaraaz hain"??he did not reply ..just bit his lower lip and then cleared his throat.."abhi lets not discuss..ek request thi..baba ko ya armaan ko nahi batana...lets wait a while and get some clarity on the whole issue..then we would decide...aur haan col verma ko maine kaha tha hum aayenge kal subah..solankis are also coming there...ok"??nidhi nodded..but her head seemex to be whirling with tension...it could have been the happiest day for her..the ultimate dream..was being fulfilled..her cup of joy was brimming...her universe was ggoing to be complete..but then...what use was all the joys in the world if he...her husband..her dr ashutosh ..her everything was not happy..What was going on in his mind??why did he say not to share the news with baba...what was he going to decide??surely he would not force her to...no he couldn't do that...nidhi's eyes filled with tears...and she looked at ashutosh...he was focussed on the road ahead..and she silently wiped her tears...

The car came to a screeching halt at Mathur niwas and nidhi gotdown...as they entered,baba smiled"arre waah aaj dono sath...kaise"??ashutosh smiled"woh PGI gaya tha kaam se..iski classes khatm ho gayi thi to..."baba smiled"v good..chal nidhi beti aaj tu chai bana...saath peeyenge .."and nidhi nodded as she went into freshen up..and as dr ashutosh wanted to follow her;baba said"baith mere pass..yeh bata..nidhi ka chehra kyun utra hai..kuch baat hai kya"??

"Kuch nahi baba..i am fine..dekhiye abhi chai peeke sab fresh lagenge"!!nidhi tried to put up an act as she made tea n got some sandwiches..

Baba ate with relish..but ashutosh observed nidhi hardly ate...was it distaste for food ..so common in the first few weeks or was she nervous???he looked at her...as she was continuously stirring her tea...n for the first time concern peeked through his mask of emotionlessness...baba 's experienced eyes seemed to be watching all...silently..."nidhi..jaa beta aaraam ker ..heeraman aata hi hoga..tu tired hai aaj ..jaa"!!and nidhi got up...making a mammoth effort to hold back her tears..n fears...

"Coffee lenge..."??nidhi asked as dr Ashutosh was busy with his files ..n he nodded...as she got a cup of their favourite strong coffee...he took the cup n said "so jaao..i have work...aur haan coffee nahi peena..not good in this condition.."nidhi felt a strange urge to cry..he was concerned about her..why didnt he speak up..why was he not asking her anything...why wasnt he reacting...not even shouting!!nidhi couldn't bear it...as she put her trembling hand on his brown sweater. .."suniye..."he looked at her"aaj bahut thaki ho..mujhe bhi kaafi kaam hai..so jao..kal col verma ke yahaan se aake discuss karenge ..its a very important decision ..it cant be decided off hand...good nighr"!

Nidhi sighed...as she returned to the bed..n lay ..tired..fagged out..confused and vv sad...as she closed her eyes...tears that she had held back so far ..seemed to flow out silently but steadily...

For dr ashutosh. .work seemed a digression..he did not want to think right now..at keast he was trying ..he wanted to overcome the shock..n then decide logically with nidhi..whetjer to keep the baby or...??but how would she react??he knew ..that though he was v keen at her PG ..he would never force her into anything...he had not wanted a pregnancy so early...but it seemed nidhi had messed up the pill regime...but it was his fault too...probably at myssoorie...yes 5 weeks back...had she forgotten her pills??ashutosh had no answers...or there were too many questions...how had this mistake occurred??what d nidhi want now??should he convince her??and most importantly..why was she so keen at motherhood so early on in life...

He yawned as he got up...n as was customary when he got into the bed..he pulled nidhi to his chest...she whimpered in her sleep...and he felt a wet patch...his fingers touched her cheeks...they were wet with tears...ashutosh sighed...he knew whatever decision he took was not going to be easy...but yes nidhi's interests had to be the point of focus. .her health..her education..her future...her desires...

Ashutosh closed his eyes...and through his disturbed sleep...he seemed to see a whirl of smoke...take the shape of a lil baby girl...all in pink...and as she again disdolved into smoke ..she seemed to be extending her gand to him...n he heard a feeble cry..."papa..."!!ashutosh woke up with a start...and hot up...as he looked at nidhi...18 years his junior..his wife..his love..but also his duty n responsibility. ..hadnt he failed to guard her interests??could he make amends...??as he closed his eyes the cry of "papa..."reverberated again...was his child..their child ..their unborn baby pulling at his heart strings??the heart strings of dr Hardstone!!
