What do you think one can do to improve your interest in the stream that is currently in your hands? (I am not asking you a personal question.. this is the dilemma almost 90% of the chidren are facing.. so you could give a POV from the younger generation.)

Its just that Aunty, not every child holds the capacity to fulfill every dream that the parents have seen for them... Somethimes they live in a different world... And its a very painful moment for both parents and the kids wen their worlds clash...
Sometimes its good that both of them have a look into both the worlds, to see, what Ashutosh had once said, ki har puraani cheez sahi ho, ye zaroori nahi, aur har nayi cheez humesha ghalat ho ye bhi zaroori nahi hai...

So in my opinion in general, both need to come on an equilibrium instead of burdening on each other the burden of their thoughts...

Hi all,

Some one wanted little general information with their article. Then immediately it struck me, I have a full forum load of intelligentia with me. I could take help from the forum and I am sure you wont prove me wrong.

I know many of us are highly educated, holding responsible positions. To top everything, they are very accommodative and helping. Now the question is,

>>> How many of us really think that university studies are important and necessary for our children (here 'our' is a general word ).

>>> Is a university degree really needed for our children?
I think a university degree is important as it is should serve as a bridge between school and professional life. It should empower children to cope with life's challenges.
Note: I have said should as this is really not the case. That is because, children are forced to choose subjects according to their parents wishes. Colleges become merely an extension of school, with a whole lot of meaningless stuff to study.

>>> How many of us are convinced that maths and science are very important and give more weightage to them than other subjects like language and History?

Strongly disagree. I am in the field of education and train teachers to focus on Whole Brain Development and not to differentiate in their treatment between Arts and Science. Very often a PT or Social Science period will happily be sacrificed to complete Math and Science portions.

>>> If the child(high school or lower) is showing interest in drawing / writing poetry /music..etc... how many of us are considering them as a main stream of studies and not a holiday activity?
They are very much main stream and the sooner we accept this, the faster we will have a well-balanced society.

>>> What is our idea of Engineering?
The most sought after course of education

>>> Why there is a down trend for medical degrees in the younger generation? (This is an assumption purely based on the number of engineering colleges Vs medical, dental & allied subjects colleges.)
It is because people want to land lucrative jobs even before they get their degrees. Medicine on the other hand needs patience, dedication and a lot of personal sacrifices which many people aren't willing to give

>>> Why is it important to study subjects like Oceanography / Archaeology / Medieval History? Do we like our children to graduate in them?
If they are interested in them. No subject is good or bad if you have the interest

>>> Do you really think Computer science is a really 'in' thing for any aspirant and we inculcate that studying Computer science from IIT is the ultimate goal? ( many non-Engineering parents too pushing their children towards Engineering degrees.. what is making them do so?)
As mentioned above - many parents and children believe it is the most lucrative optipn and the future is settled.( who has seen the future)
The sad thing is that we are churning out engineers without life skills such as communication, interpersonal skills which eventually mars their growth.

>>> What is the difference between the computer science and computer engineering and computer programming?

>>> What is our idea of computer gaming? Is it a positive thing or negative?
Like anything addictive, computer gaming in moderation is fine for young kids.
Please answer as many as possible and as honest as possible.
Hope this helps.😃

I wud like to answer the q u asked in Suvika's post

Say a child is lagging in history and science. Aside from getting a tution teacher for history alone, why do you think a parent prefers a science tution from history (this is a majority opinion(95%) given by majority in an yes/no questionnaire sheet)

I consider the possibility that India's higher education crisis has created high levels of anxiety among parents which is in turn responsible for their insistence that their children study science n maths
The love for engineering degrees among Indians is, without doubt, also fueled by the media. Every year, Indian magazines prepare rankings of the top 100 liberal arts and science colleges, management schools, engineering colleges, law schools and so on. It is hard to say how much or how little do parents and students believe the feel-good reports on high salaries and the rankings of engineering colleges and business schools. Their lack of sufficient and reliable information (or even plain ignorance) perhaps makes them more gullible into believing what they would like to believe - that the path to riches and a good life for their children lies via science streams irrespective of the interest of their child or putting in more harsh words , the aptitude of their child.

One argument is science is based on the argument, proof and logic. Where as history is the compilation of the known facts. So, if a child develops logical thinking, she might improve the interest in other faculties of the brain and automatically the subject- History. If this argument is correct, why one needs to study History? Is it only knowing some facts of the past? same thing goes with other subjects too...

Every subject has its importance but I wud like to emphasise on history here...History serves as our laboratory, and the past serves as our most vital evidence in the quest to figure out why people behave the way they do in societal settings. If decision makers do not consult history, they make decisions without all of the facts.

It teaches thinking and writing skills that are critical in a wide range of professions, from law to business to medicine. There's no substitute for being able to evaluate evidence and make clear, concise, and convincing arguments. People excel at what challenges them intellectually and what "turns on the light bulb" in their head.

Well to sum up its just a POV. Whether we accept it or not history is an integral part of our lives...a subject that draws a li e between literate n illiterate . Had it not been for history how cud we ever acknowledge the importance of education itself or demerits of child marriage , sati pratha...all thanks to history.

>>> How many of us really think that university studies are important and necessary for our children (here 'our' is a general word ).
i think it is required. yes.

You say, you 'think'. why not assertive?

Because there are some who don't need it. I met a guy recently. He cleared his 10th and after that did some tech courses. He was from a remote village and couldn't study further due to some personal issues. He is like a sponge Mudraji. Absorbs anything and everything. Has amazing analytic thinking ability. Now is working in Bangalore, earning 30K / month.

Rest aside, finding someone to tutor history is tougher. You see tutions for science and math almost in every colony. And i think it has got to do with the attitude of the parents too. They expect their child to go into either of these fields and want them to excel in them. Whereas history, average or above average is OK since the child is not going to look at it after 10th. I was poor in maths and history. I had tution for math. Not history.

Great to know this. What amounts of efforts you are keeping for the child to have some interest or show some interest? Hope you wouldnt mind sharing. If it is a personal Q, please ignore.

I wouldn't mind answering at all. My elder one is interested in patterns. He did his first rangoli at the age of 5. And he likes to make things..build things. Give him a lego or a mechanix set, he doesn't even look at the book. He makes them his own way and often makes them move. Connects a battery and stuff like that..he is interested in embroidery too which i encourage a lot as my skills in that dept are limited to sewing a button.😛😆

Younger one is 4+ and is interested in cooking. Knows the ingredients of most of the dishes that i cook. I take his help in little ways to keep his interest alive. If i am in the kitchen, then thats where he is too most of the time. Of course, that gives a coronary attack to my MIL who firmly believes cooking is a woman's job..😆

On contrary, Most of the Engineers are going for the software development jobs. It doesnt need an engineering degree, let aside computer engineering.
and the trend that is catching up very fast is - engineers going for MBA studies..rather than a specialisation.. may be MBAs are paid better than engineers. Now do you think everything is money driven?

Money does play a role Mudraji..No point denying that. But it is like after the UG, students stand at cross roads. Continue in the same field or try something else? My husband did his BTech and MBA. Now he regrets that MBA because he thinks he would make a better tech person than a management related one. I think MBA seems like a sure fire way to climb up the corporate ladder and ambition also plays a role in this.

>>> What is our idea of computer gaming? Is it a positive thing or negative?

I think negative because it is very addictive. We don't have them at my house but one day my son went to his friend's and came back all starry eyed. two hours of non stop computer gaming. I am not saying its a real bad thing but games like that its tough for a parent to draw a line. Reasons:

1. Parents see the kids enjoy themselves so much and get indulgent
2. Kids themselves become stubborn and refuse to let go
3. Its a relief for the parents too. Kids don't get into too much mischief as long as they are occupied in this.

Any positive thoughts?

I have neither played these nor did i watch my kids playing. So absolutely no idea. Sorry 😊

An excellently thought provoking post Mudraji👏⭐️👏⭐️👏⭐️👏⭐️👏⭐️👏
>>> How many of us really think that university studies are important and necessary for our children (here 'our' is a general word ).

>>> Is a university degree really needed for our children?

Yes, university degree is must as it generates vision and mission in a child and develops confidence to enter into a professional field. It broadens the horizon of knowledge. Generates awareness and builds up confidence in an individual to face the world. On the whole it helps to improve quality of life.

>>> How many of us are convinced that maths and science are very important and give more weightage to them than other subjects like language and History?
Maths and science are definitely important as these subjects develop analytical and reasoning skills. Language and history are important as well. Language helps in perfect communication of thought, science and extraordinary skills. And history ofcourse enhances knowledge about the world's happenings. And very important subject for IAS aspirants.

>>> If the child(high school or lower) is showing interest in drawing / writing poetry /music..etc... how many of us are considering them as a main stream of studies and not a holiday activity?
Definitely it can be considered as main stream if the child has spark, aptitude and extraordinary talent and merit for particular art and is serious about pursuing career in the same.

>>> What is our idea of Engineering?
Engineering is the foundation of life. Everything starts with engineering and ends with it, too. Mechanical - from watch to truck, Electrical and electronics - instuments, equipments, medical gadgets, etc, etc, And software - no need to describe.

>>> Why there is a down trend for medical degrees in the younger generation? (This is an assumption purely based on the number of engineering colleges Vs medical, dental & allied subjects colleges.)

Lengthy course, , lack of dedication, exorbitantly high fee structure vis-a-vis no guarantee of cent percent success i.e monetory returns against investment

>>> Why is it important to study subjects like Oceanography / Archaeology / Medieval History? Do we like our children to graduate in them?
Yeah, these are equally significant fields of study. It is necessary for the coming generations to be aware of marine life, ancient happenings, etc. these subjects impart very good scope provided a child has aptitude for the same.

>>> Do you really think Computer science is a really 'in' thing for any aspirant and we inculcate that studying Computer science from IIT is the ultimate goal? ( many non-Engineering parents too pushing their children towards Engineering degrees.. what is making them do so?)
It should not be the ultimate goal. There are equally enterprizing fields in which children can pursue their career

>>> What is the difference between the computer science and computer engineering and computer programming?

Computer science is the study of what computers [can] do; programming is the practice of making computers do things. Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer hardware and software

>>> What is our idea of computer gaming? Is it a positive thing or negative?
Everything has it's positive and negative. If within limits and used for better cause everything has merits.

This is what the generation gap Azeen!

elders had some other environment. such as, I have seen parents scolding their children for wasting time on Facebook. But that child is actually, constantly discussing about their group project on the FB (atleast at that moment).. and he was making the report based on those comments.

As you say, if both come to an equilibrium as early as possible, it is good.
