I'll continue my post from the previous discussion where I said that the Boses represent that section of the society that is trying to shun the patriarchal system. I won't even call it progressive. It's less restrictive. Less structured. But, here is where Boses' problems start. It's not all the boses who want to take their family into the non patriarchal, feminist system. It's mainly Bijoy. But even he is still (and has been for atleast 30-40 years if not more) trying to find all the answers. Matriarchal is not the opposite of patriarchal. What is? I don't know what it's called. But Asha and dida had no such inclination. Bijoy wanted both his kids to do well in life. Like most middle class families, he placed importance on education. His kids both did well. What Bijoy failed to understand is that the system he is trying to break not only places demands on women, it also places demands on men. He happily enabled sona to be that free person she could to be. But struggled to see that saurabh needs wings too. He assumed saurabh is already privileged (by the system) and failed to give him the freedom he desired. Bijoy was always empowering women. Asha, dida, sona, Elena and even little soha and now ronita. This is why, as much as he was frustrated that his son wasn't able to support him financially, he didn't see much of a problem in sona supporting him. That is why he hated Asha's idea of arranged marriages. He wanted sona to meet someone who will further assist her to live a life free of the boundaries of patriarchy.
Bijoy's problems started when sona fell in love with a guy who looked like a patriarch. Now dev didn't look like one initially. But when he chose his familial duties over love, bijoy started having serious doubts.
The problem for sonakshi is that she has been parented by Asha and bijoy very differently. Asha taught her men aren't as emotionally clued in as us women. Look how dada and baba behave sometimes. Bijoy taught her that it's okay to act like a man. And sonakshi read it to mean I am the elder son of this family. It's only in the 7 year period that Asha has realised how sona fails to understand that men are dumb, but Dev actually was an exception. That's what she has been chipping away at.
I am sorry this is long.
Sonakshi's troubles don't end here. She then goes into dixit household. Where ishwari broke all patriarchal rules for 20 years, To be able to build a patriarch. So dev is an equal opportunity, feminist dixit product, but ishwari continues to support the system.
This is why Sonakshi ends up so confused. One minute she feels she needs to handhold her husband in dil ke mamle. Another minute she feels she has to be the elder son of the boses and sort their legal troubles and sometime over the weekend I guess she will feel, pregnancy is a family matter. I should go and tell ma. Women handle pregnancy. Men just stand outside with a cigar in their hand.
I have a lot of sympathy for these families. Trying to break the clutches of a system that is all around them.
I'll also say Shaavi, that I don't think dixit sisters or tripathi cousin were very empowered. But that's not because dev didn't do his bit. It's because ishwari didn't let him do his bit. Recall early S1. Riya wanted to work with dev Bhaiya and ishwari's response was, Tera bhai hai na. Patriarchy much!
