@BOLD GREEN, Jigsaw, that's a bull's eye point. And the only way to explain it is double standard.
If CVs showed Neha left her husband because he refused to put her over his family's needs and Riya instead of Elena stayed on leaving their family in need and they were neutral on both of their situation as in didn't blame or praise either one, then I'd have reason to believe that their ideology was merely in conflict.
But the fact is that Elena is their daughter-in-law and they have a different rule for daughter and daughter-in-law (for that matter they have different rules for family and family by marriage too). Ishwari always uses complicated Hindi lectures and lofty ideas to Sonakshi while blatantly ignored the same never applied to her own daughter.
However, while Dev often claims not to be a conservative man and such, he doesn't hesitate to use the double standards for his own benefit. He also blamed Sona for not putting up with his family's insults while charging Ranveer for not keeping his sister happy.
I am sorry but that looks to me that Dev always wanted to have his cake and eat it too.
He wanted to be among his family's comfort while his mother caters to his whim, but he also wanted a wife while never making her a priority or even willing to change a tiny portion of his life and routine.
He expected Sonakshi to stick around despite his family's insults yet she can't say anything to his mother. But he still gets to tell her to get out and she should just stand outside his door like a beggar.
He blamed Sonakshi for never looking back, while he never looked back either.
He wanted Suhana to call him dad while behaving like a petulant, spoiled brat.
In short, one rule for Dixits, another for the rest of the world.

I too think this story is about Dev and Ishwari and perhaps even a reflection of mother-son duo in society.
Their love was their down fall. Their faith in each others ability to read their mind, know their heart turned out to be an illusion.
This story highlights a saying in Tamil which translates to "Even if they are mother and child, their mouth and stomach are different".
While Ishwari being the mother had an upper hand showed some dominance and demand, Dev being the child showed petulance. The love and trust they had on each other turned them into fearful of each other's actions and motives and in general, insincere to each other.
To understand Sona, Dev and Ishwari don't have to look too far, they only had to look at Neha and Elena. While Neha left her husband because he refused to put her above his mother's needs, Elena stayed on leaving her family at the time of their need. Given they haven't chosen one of Neha or Elena, Dev and Ishwari's inner character is baffling. They seem to want this, that and everything OR they don't quite know what they want!
I can only conclude, how they behave to everyone else is only a reflection of their relationship with each other. So, yes, Sona, the Boses, GKB, Vicky are all side characters.
