Chapter 5

They all had dinner and when they were seeing Dev off at the door, he leaned and planted a kiss on Shreya's cheek and she gave him a hug and said "Good night uncle. You will come again isn't it?"

Dev nodded and said "Yes I will come again to meet you. Good night!".

After he left, Sona put Shreya in bed and as she tried to catch up on some work relating to the NGO she realized after a while that her thoughts were wandering. She thought to herself "Whats happening to me... after so many years, I met Dev and here I am feeling like a teenager. I am a mother of a five year old for God's sake. After the way he broke up with me so many years back, why am I willing to forgive him. But I must also remember that he probably still loves me as that's the reason he never married. He was also very good with Shreya". She remembered something that Dev had told her many times during their short courtship "I want a daughter Sonakshi just like you.." Brushing away her tears Sonakshi thought about Ritwik. RItwik and she had been married for 5 years. He had always been a good friend. She was so scarred emotionally after her breakup with Dev and her quick marriage with Ritwik that she did not let him come close to her emotionally and physically for at least two years. They were just getting closer and getting to know each other when he died suddenly in a road accident. Ritwik also knew heart of heart that though she respected him a lot, her love for Dev was far far deeper.

Sona was upset at the direction of her thoughts and decided to go to bed. She couldn't sleep properly that night.

The next day, Dev was at work in the Mumbai office when there was a call on the phone at his desk "Hello. Dev Dixit here". An elderly voice answered him hesitatingly "Hello Dev beta. This is Sen uncle, Sona's father in law here. Can I talk to you for a minute if you are not very busy?" Dev was surprised to say the least and he said "Of course Uncle. Tell me". Mr. Sen said "Can you come and meet me today - around 3.30 PM. I need to speak to you on something important". Dev was now more surprised at this request and he said " Ok uncle I will be there".

At 3.30 PM, Dev reached Sona's flat and rang the bell. Mr. Sen opened the door and said "Thanks for coming Dev beta - come in". He added "Shreya is not yet back from her play school and Sona is at the hospital". Then both Mr. Sen and Dev sat down on the sofa. Dev waited as he was wondering what the discussion was going to be about. Mr. Sen was silent for a while and then clearing his throat he said "You must be wondering. Let me start from the beginning. When Sona and Ritwik got married she came to this house as a daughter in law. But after Ritwik passed away, over the years she has become my daughter and I cannot bear to see her lonely. I want her to move on and marry someone else. She deserves to be happy and secure - without any worries". Dev was still quiet when Uncle continued "Dev - I know that at one time you both were in love and wanted to get married. I also know that you both broke up and she married Ritwik. I know somewhere deep down that she cares for you and since you are not married till date I think you love her even today. Am I wrong?". Dev was stunned and he did not know what to say "Yes uncle. I still love her" Mr. Sen smiled and continued "Then I was not wrong. I understood from the way you looked at her last night. And an important thing - you become attached to Shreya and she to you in a very short span of time." Dev said "Yes Shreya is a lovely girl". Mr. Sen then took Dev's hands in his and said "I have one favour to ask of you - will you marry Sona and accept her and Shreya into your life?"

Dev was silent and did not reply immediately. It was too sudden and all his feelings were all raw and he did not trust himself to speak up. He also knew that this was a second and probably his last chance at his only happiness in life. He thought of his Maa's reaction and he thought of what Sona's response would be if he proposed marriage. He also knew, deep down, that his mind was made up the moment he found out that Sona was single again that he wanted to be in her life, but only if she wanted.

He realized that Mr. Sen was looking at him and waiting for a response - he cleared his throat and said "Yes Uncle. I love Sona and now Shreya also a lot. I want to marry her but only if she agrees to it willingly". Mr. Sen nodded and said "Yes of course. I cant thank you enough beta". Just then the doorbell rang and Shreya ran into the room with her Nanny calling out "Dadu dadu where are you. Where is my chocolate milk?". She stopped short, suddenly when she noticed Dev in the living room with her beloved Dadu and looking at Dev she smiled shyly and said "Hi Uncle!" Dev bent down and picked her up and said "Hi my little princess! How are you doing? What did you learn in School today?" Her little face lit up and she said "I learnt how to make a cupcake today. I have brought it with me. Will you taste it?" Dev realized his eyes were moist and he could just nod. She brought her lunch box and opened it and took out the cupcake. She broke a piece and gave it to him. Dev ate it and said "This is the best cup cake I have eaten". Dev could have sworn seeing the smile and happiness on her face that no one had felt happier when he complemented her including the angel's mother.

He gave Shreya a big hug and felt really sad her had nothing to give her.

He put Shreya down reluctantly and told her "I have to go now. I will come and meet you tomorrow. Uncle I will speak to Sona. Thanks for giving me this chance and considering me to be good enough for your daughter".

He touched Mr. Sen's feet and took his blessings.

He came out and felt happier and lighter than he had for years. He decided to speak to Sona soon as he needed to get back to Delhi as well.

He sat in the car and took out his mobile and looked up Sona's number and messaged her "Need to discuss something important with you. Can you meet me tonight?"

There was no reply from Sona for the next two and half hours and Dev was contemplating calling her when his phone rang. Dev checked the time - it was about 7.30 PM. "I am so sorry Dev - I saw your message now only. Tell me what is it that you wanted to discuss. Do you need any further information on Asha Deep?"

Dev rolled his eyes and replied "I'd rather discuss this in person. Can I come and pick u up and we can discuss over an early dinner". Sona concurred and Dev agreed to pick her up in half an hour. He made reservations at a five star hotel close to her hospital and left from office. Sona was there waiting for him in the lobby of the hospital and when she saw him she got in and buckled up. As Dev drove out, she took out her phone and called home and informed her father in law that she was going out with Dev and would be late. They were both quiet and Sona asked him "What is it that you wanted to discuss?" Dev said "Lets reach the hotel and then we can discuss"

Sona nodded and looked out of the window.

Dev looked at her and hoped that her answer would be a yes.
