RAINBOWS AT THE END OF A DARK NIGHT

Chapter 6

They reached the hotel and Dev handed over the car keys to the valet and they walked into the restaurant. After they were seated, the waiter came and handed over the menu cards. Sona and Dev both decided to have a fresh lime soda before ordering the food. The waiter then handed over the menu cards to them and went away. Sona was scanning the menu trying to make up her mind. They finally decided to order some fried baby corns as starters and fried rice and some tri coloured vegetable in hunan sauce to go with it for the main course. When Dev was placing the order for food, Sona looked around approvingly. The restaurant was done up very tastefully. The lighting was dim and the air conditioning perfect. She then turned to look at Dev and said "Now tell me what is it that you wanted to discuss so urgently?"

Dev cleared his throat and spoke up "Sona, when I came to Mumbai a few days back, I didn't think my life would change so drastically after ten long years. When I saw you on Sunday, I was shocked and surprised at how you have gone from strength to strength. I am really so sorry about Ritwik. There is something I want to share with you - all these years I made an effort to keep away from you as I was worried that I wouldn't be able to control my feelings if I came face to face with you again. It's just that I knew deep down I am still in love with you".

"When I met Shreya, I felt complete somehow and I really regretted that I didn't meet her earlier. She is such a sweet child. After meeting her and spending time with both of you, I have one favour to ask you Sonakshi... will you consider making me a part of your life? Will you give me one more chance at happiness and love? Will you marry me?"

Sona was quiet and was looking down when Dev spoke but when he uttered the last words she looked up at him with wide eyes, shocked. She got up immediately and said "You know this is not possible Dev. I must leave now". Dev got up and held her hand gently and said "Please don't leave Sona - don't leave this important conversation incomplete". He looked at her with pleading eyes and Sona reluctantly sat down. Dev mouthed a thank you. The waiter came with their drinks. After he left, Dev looked at Sona and said "I really mean what I said Sona. I want to marry you and spend the rest of my life with Shreya and you. You know that I always wanted a daughter. Shreya needs a father and you know that as well. I genuinely love her like my own daughter and I really want to give her all the love and security and attention that she deserves."

"I promise I will be a good husband and an even better father. Please give me one more chance" he pleaded. Sona looked at him and said "What about your mother? Have you spoken to her? You and I both know what happened the last time". Dev wished for the hundredth time that he could erase the memories of that horrible night ten years ago from all of their lives but her knew that wouldn't be possible and he took a deep breath and said "No I have not spoken to her yet. But my Maa has changed a lot over the years Sonakshi, believe me. She will be very happy to welcome you back into our home, this time forever". "What about Shreya?" Sona asked. Dev hesitated a tiny bit and said "She will welcome Shreya as well".

By then their food arrived and they waited till the waiter served them. After he left Sona said "Dev I hope you understand that this is all so sudden for me. I need time to think about this before I give you an answer. I am not sure how long I would take." Dev smiled and said "I know Sona, believe me I understand. I am willing to wait for however long you take". They finished their meal in silence and Sona said finally "Thanks for the dinner Dev and I will let you know once I make up my mind".

Dev dropped Sona home and when she got off the car, he took a paper bag from the back seat and gave it to her and said "This is for Shreya - please give this to her". Sona nodded and went into the house. Dev backed the car and left.

Sona got into the house and saw her father in law and Shreya were in the living room. Both had finished their dinner and he had her on his lap and was reading out to her. He looked up and asked "How was your day beta?" "Good Baba. Hope Shreya did not bother you too much!" Sona replied. She handed over the bag to Shreya and said "This is from Dev uncle. Open and see what is it".

Shreya opened the packed and shrieked in joy "See Mamma what a cute teddy bear he has sent me". Sona looked at her daughter's happy face and smiled.

Later that night after she put Shreya to sleep, Sona lay down next to her and started thinking about what Dev told her. Her heart wanted her to say yes to Dev because she knew he would make a good father and she sensed a change in him now after so many years. Her brain, on the other hand warned her and reminded her of the time he unceremoniously broke up with her ten years back. Sona's mind was on an overdrive. After Ritwik's sudden death, she had taken time to find some stability and peace in her life. She wasn't sure what Ishwari aunty's reaction would be.

The same night, Dev was also sleepless in his hotel room, standing by the window he knew he had cast his dice and would now have to wait for Sona's decision. He had already decided that he would'nt force her or try to influence her decision. He would wait - patiently or otherwise.
