THE LAST FAREWELL
Chapter 6:
The next one week went off in a blur. They decided to perform Sona's last rites at Mumbai and not take her back to Delhi. Dev was on an autopilot mode and refused to eat or talk to anybody. The only person who could get convince him to eat a few morsels was Asha. Later he would realise how ironical it was. When he walked into Sona's bedroom in her flat at Mumbai for the first time, the thing that caught his attention was a photo of them on their wedding day at her bedside. He picked it up and looked at her in it - she was so happy and so beautiful. He just couldn't keep her happy. Now he wouldn't get another chance as well. He sent back Ishwari and Ria back to Delhi and only Nikki stayed back in Mumbai with him.
Only when Sona's friends started dropping home to offer condolences he realised how many friends she made during her short stay at Mumbai. These visits were awkward as none of them knew what to really say.
His daughter came home in a few days and he brought her home in his arms with Nikki on one side and Saurav on the other side. Before he stepped over the threshold, Asha did a small arati and took Devakshi in her arms and cried for the first time since Sona went away forever. Dev could not control his tears and he sat down on the floor and leaned against Asha's feet and said "Mujhe please maaf kar dijiye - main Sona ko nahin bacha saka...".
Later that night, as Asha was putiing Devakshi to sleep, Dev walked into the room and told her "Maa main apni beti ka khyal khud rakhna chahta hoon, aap mujhe sikhaengi naa". Asha smiled and said "kyun nahin beta!"
Two days later they all came back to Delhi. When they landed at Delhi, Asha who was carrying Devakshi in her arms told Dev "Main ise apne saath le jaa rahi hoon - tum shaam ko aake ise le jaana after all ise apne papa ke saath hi rahna hai". Dev replied "Ji thik hai".
Dev and Nikki reached home and as they got down from the car they saw Ishwari with an arti ki thaal at the door. "Dev kahan hain meri poti?" she asked. Dev said "Woh apne ghar gayi hai Maa - yeh ghar toh uski Ma aka kabhi apne hone nahin diya toh uska kaise hua?" Ishwari's eyes welled up with tears and she said "Tu mujhe kabhi maaf nahin kareg kya - main bahut swarthi ho gayi thi". Dev walked up the stairs and turned back and said "Kuch galtiyon ko kabhi bhi maafi nahin milti hai Maa - jo galtiyan maine aur aapne ki hain". Mamiji said "Aisi bhi kya naraazgi Dev apni Maa se woh bhi us Bangalan ke liye!". Dev looked at her angrily and said "Aap humare beech mein na bolein toh hi accha hai - Aap bhi zimmedar hain". He turned and walked into his room angrily. IShwari and Mamiji turned to Nikki. Nikki simply said "Mujhe sharm aa rahi hai ki aap meri Maa hain".
After an hour Dev came down and called out to Kichu - "Kichu bhaiya mera samaan maine pack kar diya hai - who suitcase aap please neeche laiye". Ishwari said "Kahan jaa raha hai abhi toh aaya hai". Dev looked at her and said "Main yeh ghar hamesha ke liye chod raha hoon - main Maa Baba ke yahan rahne jaa raha hoon - jahan meri beti ka ghar hai". "Tu aisa nahin kar sakta hai apni maa ke saath" Ishwari said. "Aapne meri Sona ko bhi toh apna nahin samjha Maa" Dev said.
"Aur aap chinta mat kijiye, yeh ghar chalane ke liye and aap sab ke khyal ke liye main paise bhej diya karoonga" Dev turned and walked out of the house. Nikki watching this simply told Dev "Main shaam ko aaongi Devakshi se milne. Bye Bhaiya".
Dev reached the Bose residence and rang the bell. Asha opened the door and smiled and told him "Nahin raha gaya na beti ke bina - baitho main use le aati hoon". As she turned, Dev held her hands and made her sit on the sofa and sat down on the floor near her feet and told her "Main sirf apni beti ko hi nahin apne Maa aur Baba ko bhi miss kar raha tha isiliye main aa gaya". Asha's eyes filled with tears on hearing this and she simply said "yeh bhi tumhara hi ghar hai Dev". Dev replied back in a single sentence "Agar yeh mera bhi ghar hai toh main yahin rehna chahta hoon apni beti ke saath". Before Asha could reply Bijoy who heard the conversation said "Beta humein kya problem hogi lekin Ishwari ji - unhe accha nahin lagega". Dev said "Main us ghar to hamesha ke liye chod aaya hoon. Main yehin rehna chahta hoon kyun ki maine Sona to promise kiya hai ki main hamari beti ka khyal rakhoonga aur main use strong banaoonga bilkul uske tarah. Aur yeh main akele nahin kar paaonga - mujhe aapke sahare aur guidance ki zaroorat hai. Aap allow karoge na mujhe idhar rahne?".
Bijoy and Asha looked at each other and nodded. Dev took his stuff to Sona's room on the first floor. As he put his things in Sona's cupboard Bijoy and Saurav brought the baby bed and made space for Devakshi in the room as well. There was a beautiful picture of a smiling Sonakshi on the wall - Dev looked at her and said "As always you were right Mrs. Dixit".
As the days went by, Dev learnt everything about looking after his daughter from changing nappies to feeding her to making her burp and sleep. He visited Ishwari Niwas sometimes out of duty and sometimes out of guilt but never love. When his daughter turned one, his mother came to see them at Bose residence and she told Asha "Aap ho sake to mujhe maaf kar diiyega. Main apni poti ke janam din par ek chota sa tohfa layi hoon". Asha smiled and said "MAafi ki koi baat nahin hain. Shayad kismet ko yahi manzoor tha. Aapki poti hai aap kuch bhi de saktin hai". Dev walked in at that time and told Asha directly "Maa mujhe ek cup chai chahiye please. Main kamre mein hoon". He just gave a small smile to Ishwari and went upstairs. Ishwari's face was sad that her son never acknowledged her presence.
That night, Asha went to Dev's room and told him "Main tumse kuch baat karna chahti hoon. Tum aur kitne din aise akele rahoge - mere aur Bijoy ki rai mein tumhe shaadi kar leni chahiye". Dev looked at her shocked and said "Aap aise kaise kah sakti hain - aap mujhe is ghar mein nahin rakhna chahti ho isliey aise kah rahin hain". Asha tried to reason with him "Nahin Dev aise baat nahin hai - tumhari Maa bhi yehi chahti hai". Dev replied "Main samajh gaya - lekin main ek baat keh raha hoon please meri life mein Sona ki jagah aur koi nahin le sakti hai and jahan tak Devakshi ka sawaal hai uski dekhbaal ke liye main hoon and aur Aap, Baba, Saurav, Nikki and Ria and Ayan hain na> lekin mujhe dobara shadi ke liye mat kahiye!". Asha did not say anything and left the room.
As the years went by, Devakshi proved to be a blend of her mother and father- she was positive and strong like mother yet she was emotional like her father as well. She proved to be very good in studies like him and she always did very well academically. Unlike her mother she was also very interested in cooking from a young age. Watching his daughter grow was a cathartic experience for Dev as well. It was like he was reliving his childhood through her. Yet there were many nights when he couldn't sleep and he as he lay awake, we felt Sonakshi was next to him on the bed - he could see her clearly, her silky hair, her luminous face, her dark eyes all beckoned to him. Only when he reached out for her did her realise that she wasn't there.
Dev's business continued to flourish and his equation with his mother continued to worsen. When Devakshi was ten years old, his mother passed away of a heart attack. He was sad but he did not break down. Maybe because somewhere along the line, there was already a disconnect with his mother after Sona's death. Mama and Mamiji decided to move to the village and Nikki wanted to go abroad to study further. Dev just shut the house as the memories were just too painful for him.
Eighteen years later: On Devakshi's eighteenth birthday:
Dev stood in front of Sona's photo and said "Thanks Sona mujhe Devakshi dene ke liye - nahin to tumhare bina main mar jaata. Woh badi pyari bacchi hai. Badi badi baatein karti hai. Usne mujhse promise liya hai ki aaj ke din main use hamari love story bataaonga. Tum kya kehti ho main bataaon na usko sab?. Just then he felt two hands hugging him from behind - Dev smiled and pulling her into a tight hug he said "Happy Birthday my Sunshine". "Thanks Baba" she said. "Did u take the blessings from Dadu and Dida and Mama and Mami?" he asked gently. She rolled her eyes "Yes Baba. Accha you have not forgotten your promise na?" "No I have not - tonight I will tell you everything!" Dev replied.
Father and daughter went down for a special breakfast and just as they were about to start Nikki and her husband, Nishant and Ria, Ayan and their daughter Nidhi all walked in to wish Devakshi on her birthday. Dev's little butterfly was so happy to see everyone around that she went about hugging and kissing everyone around. Nikki bua asked her - what did your father gift you today. Devakshi replied "Something very special - bua main laati hoon abhi". She went running up the stairs and came down with a beautiful magenta saree. "Yeh maa ki saari hai joh Baba ne unhe first time shaadi ke pehle gift ki thi. Toh hai na yeh sabse special gift". Nikki looked at her brother with tears in his eyes and said "Haan bahut special hai kyun ki tumhari Maa bhi bahut special thi". Dev saw his daughter with pride and couldn't control his tears and he turned around and went to the kitchen and pretended to get a glass of water. Asha who had seen the exchange between the father and daughter simply came and put his hands on his shoulder and said "Mujhe maloom hain ki tum aaj bhi Sona se utna pyar karte ho aur use bahut miss karte ho." "Aapne sahi samjha Maa" Dev said. Devakshi's birthday celebrations continued through the day and it was at bedtime when father and daughter got sometime alone.
Dev kept his promise and told her everything about Sona and their beautiful love story. He told her that he was a rude and arrogant man he was before he met Sona and how she brought colours into his life, how they broke up, how he almost lost her to Ritwick, how they eventually got married and how he lost her as well. He told his daughter what a strong person her mother was and how pure she was and how he always lost an argument with her because she was always right. How she called him Abhodro and how he called her khargosh. At the end of it, Devakshi had tears in her eyes when Dev told her "I want you to be like your mother and not like me - I am weak beta - Sona was very strong. I just want you to know that I am always with you and I will stand by whatever decision you take. I hope you know that".
Devakshi got up and gave him a hug and said "I love you Baba and I will make you and Maa proud".
Then Dev looked up at Sona's photo on the wall and he felt at peace somehow and that her smile was wider...and he said "As always you were right Mrs. Dixit".
