Hello people,
I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to anyone on the last thread, working on a VM that's been giving me sleepless nights, so I have generally been too disoriented to write anything sensible here. I planned on making a post earlier but since we still have more than 12 hours since the new episode I figured I might as well write on the last three.
I love how the show touched upon the subject of commitment this week. Love and commitment are two very different things and I have seen very few shows depict that. Usually the presence of the former automatically confirms that of the latter but that doesn't have to be the case everytime and I'm glad we saw that being tested for both Dev Sona and Neha Ranveer this week.
However, since I have nothing more to add to Sam's take on Neha-Ranveer (Beautiful post once again Sam!), I'll stick to Dev Sona.
I'll be honest. I did not expect their conversation about Neha Ranveer to turn into a disagreement with a disappointed Sona leaving for home but the how and why of it made sense. All said and done, Dev and Sona have led very different lives and so they are bound to have contrasting opinions about relationships, money and happiness. Dev has only ever interpreted a lack of money as complete misery. I don't think he even remembers the time when his Father was still alive and while they were probably far from rich they must have been still been somewhat happy in their lives. That period of his life was naturally eclipsed with all the tragedy and hardship that followed and this part is firmly etched into his mind. Sona on the other hand - while she has never known the same kind of hardship as Dev in terms of money, she has still known enough happiness to be able to tell the difference between the peace of mind that money can bring from the joy that only comes from the immaterial things in life. Their backgrounds and upbringing were especially distinctive in this scene.
Sona getting upset by Dev's statement made sense to me. She was patient and understanding about what he was trying to say until he utters the words Yeh rishta barabari ka nai hai.' Time and again we have seen Sona feel that same gap between her and Dev. That was always her primary reasoning as to why Dev and Natasha make more sense as a couple. When Dev chose to follow his heart, he proved her wrong so today when she sees him affirm her initial fears/insecurities she was bound to feel hurt. Granted that Dev hadn't even thought of his relationship with Sona in the same context but it was bound to pinch. Is money really that important to be equals in a relationship? The main reason why Neha-Ranveer and Dev-Sona work tells us that it isn't. There's a genuine connect, understanding, friendship and acceptance there. And ofcourse love. You don't fall in love with someone's bank account afterall. You fall in love with their mind, their heart, even their flaws and shortcomings. Both relationships are like puzzle pieces. Each person adds something to other, thereby giving a sense of being whole and complete.
That rain sequence - Beautiful beautiful. You know, the general norm of Indian TV is that the men (Atleast those having a similar description as Dev, read - a business tycoon) play the part of being the head in the relationship and the women (Some girl whose only apparent goal in life is to make sure the hero experiences love) are the heart. As you see more and more of Dev and Sona's relationship you understand that in their case, Sona's the one with a head while Dev is all heart. Its not new, ofcourse. If Sona weren't as strong and practical, she would have never survived working for the Dixits whilst experiencing almost constant heartbreak. Dev too has always been a very emotional man and as a lover we have only seen that escalate.
I liked how Sona calmly told Dev that she needs some time to herself. Our lover boy had a different idea in mind ofcourse. And so came the important question - Are you ready to be in this relationship? Ready to be with me? Ofcourse she is, you doofus. I love how Sona's answer really wasn't a spur-of-the-moment thing. Granted that earlier her love was one-sided (well to her anyway) but even then she's known what it's like to lose Dev and now that he does love her, she wouldn't trade it for the world. Any fight or disagreement is okay as long as they are together in it. That back hug was so beautiful BTW. I loved how she smiles as she sees the relief and happiness on Dev's face... There was so much love and adoration in her eyes there. Dev is such a delicate man that way... it's sad how he was more prepared for being abandoned than being accepted by Sona. If Sona didn't know how much Dev loves her before their encounter in the rain, then Dev doesn't know how much Sona loves him either.
I loved loved loved how Dev made her promise that she would never go home like that again. I like how he understands the importance of not letting a fight fester for too long and talking things out. Also how he clarifies why he is so worried about this match, making Sona see her own fault in understanding him, was wonderful.
Their conversation about her driving was so sweet! There was something very aesthetic about that final shot where they are holding hands and laughing. And I am the only one who finds the idea of both Dev and Sona nursing a cold totally adorable? 😆
A final note about Ishwari - she is about the most confusing character on this show for me. One second she makes perfect sense and the very next she leaves you face-palming. Most of what she said about Neha to Dev did make sense to me. Her thinking that a woman should only ever please her husband and bend accordingly is disappointing though. Yes Neha was wrong, but only in the way she used Dev for what she wanted instead of talking directly to Ranveer. What irked me the most about this conversation was how she constantly refers to Neha as a child while she and Dev are the 'bade buzurg' of the house. Geez! Neha is certainly not a child. It's just easier to label her as one instead of trying to understand what drove her to this point. It's ironic really how in her head, Ishwari doesn't let Neha grow up while insisting that Dev, who is only 27 afterall, think and act like her equal. Dev is not her equal at all and Ishwari has perhaps replaced her husband with Dev in terms of an emotional support. It happens ofcourse. A mother in her position would most likely expect her son to assume the position of the head of the house but when you are required to grow up so fast, its bound to have consequences. Perhaps if Ishwari had allowed Neha to share that burden more openly, this family wouldn't be such a mess. Dev is such an emotionally handicapped person because of the same, having grown up with the single minded focus of fulfilling the needs of his family, leaving room for little else. No wonder he doesn't think much about how he's going to do that and just does it. It's why he got Sona fired from her job and also why he tried to get a better one for Ranveer.
Oh and one more thing - the whole issue with Neha and Ranveer, I'm glad the writers didn't necessarily make it too much about Dev and let the focus remain on them. Its annoyingly mandatory otherwise for every issue to become about the lead pair instead. I'll give it to Dev though... His genuine worry, love and sense of responsibility towards Neha was very touching to watch. The man's a little messed up but he nearly always means well. On a different note: It was good to see Dev having some fun on his own too... That scene with Tina was pure gold! 😆
And this has gotten long enough... I'll end my ramble now. Happy Monday guys!
p.s: What is this absurd spoiler I read about Ranveer's character taking a very K-Ektaish turn? 😕 Assuming it's false though. 🤔
