DOTW: Ending - sad or happy?

hello everyone!!

we have just finished discussing about remakes
and it is quite clear from the posts that movies
should not be remade!! but it's time for our next
discussion of the week.. and this dicussion for
this week is ending.. feel free to dicuss anything
about ending.. here are some questions..

1) do you prefer happy ending movies, sad
ending movies, or you don't mind as long as the
ending is good..?

2) which movie ending did you like the most and
why?

3) which movie ending did you dislike the most
and why? how would you change the ending if
you're given a chance?

I am very realistic so open for both as I dont mind sad/happy as long as
the ending is good, its all defend on the story.

i am so against where the hero will kill or take revenge on the baddies
and at the end, the court will give him only a few years sentence and let
him to free and he will live happily ever after with the heroine. Most of our
movies are all happy, its so boring.

Sad endings I liked most:
Kadhal - the hero will turn mad so the heroines hubby will decide to get
treatment for him. it is very realistic and showed humanity of him, instead
of making as another baddie.

Nayagan - this movie is one of my fav, when Kamals grandkid as him "
neengal kethavara nallavara", and the expression of Kamal was damn
good👏 even when the court let him go away cause he cant be found
guilty cause of no evidence, he will be shooted by the boy he had
supported during his childhood, cause for the shooter, Kamal was the
one who killed his dad - so the one who takes up weapon will also die by
it 👏 👏

Ramana - this movie most be one where the hero wont try to justifice his
acts towards the baddie, but are willing to accept consequences of his
acts and be a good modell for others. Don't try to take law in your
hands. (this is the only movie I like very much of VK)

This is good Sri - I am not a movie buff - in the
sense that I am very choosy about sitting through
some thing for over 2 hrs!!! Prefer comedies any
day. Kadalikka neram illai, Michael Madana Kamarajan,
Panchathnthram, Simla Special, Manal Kayiru - these are
all some of the movies I can watch any day - no stress
and laughter is the best medicine 😃 😃 But I like
to see movies with logical ending - should justify
the story.

There are a lot of movies where I have liked the ending
Difficult to list but here are some:
Vetri Kodi Kattu by Cheran - It is a positive movie;
It starts with the normal human tendency - an youngster
wanting to make fast money for the sake of his family and
ends in telling you that it is "YOU" who matters and not
"WHERE" - You make your life. Secondly, the way friendship
is honored - Murali never once falters or encourages the
advances of Parthiban's sister in spite of nursing a soft corner
for her. I liked that portrayal.

Poi - By KB - well , yes, I like KB's movies - The hero and
heroine dying at the end - it emphasized that any relationship
starting with lies will perish.

Manathil uruthi vendum - yes another KB movie - he gives
the due credit to his women characters. In the end Suhasini
refuses to marry - again on the ground that once there is
suspicion, there is no point in continuing. She had the added
experience - she did have a suspicious spouse who made life
hell for her and she had to divorce him. Once bitten twice shy 😃

On the second category - where I did not like the ending -
there are many actually!! When you think that the going is
good and expect a certain ending boommmm u get some thing
totally illogical and unnatural. Difficult to list but will come back
and try to do it. It is also because, the moment you feel that the
movie is not up to your expectation, you forget the whole thing..
They do not stand out in your memory!!!

I like both endings as long as they are not un natural or forced
the climax shud suit the film thats all.

Ending i liked the most- mozhi movie when Jo says i saw ur face in the moon & i missed u & accepts to marry him

Kallori- i made such a impact that i felt the recent court verdict was too late now still the case is dragging since there is a stay now on verdict 😡

How a beautiful love & friendship can get destroyed was shown in the climax

Next Pardes(hindi)- i loved the ending so much that it still stays fresh in my memory

Both hero & heroine hug their respective dads & just see each other so sweet 😳

My list will be endless

One thing that i absolutely hate is when the ending is based on the image of the heroes or heroines!!!! Then there is no story value here...

Like Roja.. I prefer comedies any day.. coz they are a good form of relaxation and reduce the monotony of day to day life...I love movies like Manal kayiru, Sathi Leelavathi, Magalir mattum, Michael madhana Kaamarajan, panchathanthiram, kaadalikka neram illai, uttaravindri ulle vaa etc. One can watch comedies again and again without getting bored!

As for action/suspense thrillers the endings have to be convincing..I really like the movie called Jeeva staring Satyaraj for slick story and good ending...same goes for Vetri vizaa, Gilli, Dhill, Samy,nooravathu naal,Dhool, Oomai Vizhigal, Sigappu rojaakkal etc. Some so called suspense thrillers are so pathetic with a lousy-sudden ending that makes you wanna wring the director's neck!!!

Light hearted family movies are another of my favourites-like samsaram oru minsaaram, vetri kodi kattu, thavamaai thavam irunthu, kannamoochi yenadaa,etc with good convincing ending!

So whether the ending is sad or happy all depends on the way the story is told or the way screenplay is written!!!Otherwise it fails to create an impact and the whole movie becomes a joke!!!!

My 2 Cents!!

Suram.. My preference for ending, almost coincides with yours! So is the list of movies.

I would also add "Kuruthi Punal" to your list of action/suspense thrillers. That movie gave me the shudders when watching the climax, the first time around.

As far as comdies go, MMKR - I have no idea how many times I would have watched that one. I would never be bored of watching it, even if over and over again.

IMO, Cheran's movies although family oriented are never light hearted. I always have a heavy heart after watching his fares. I can't remember a single movie of his, where I haven't used a tissue or two. Very moving stuff and quite convincing ending!

Well, here goes my opinion …..

For me, happy or sad ending, does not matter as long the story is good and the ending is worth watching. Happy ending movies that I have enjoyed most is Mozhi, Alaipayuthei, Laysa – Laysa, Priyamana Tholi and Autograph.

Sad ending movies that I had enjoyed was Poi, Veiyil, and Jithan

2) which movie ending did you like the most and
why?

Well, lots of movie which I liked the ending but im giving you my recent fav ending movie – Tottal Poo Malarum😳. I liked the way the director was leading the story. From the start where our hero was getting back to meet his girlfrend, his father was giving him false impression that something was wrong. I don't want to spoil the ending for those who has not watch it, but the ending was unexpected by myself.

and why? how would you change the ending if
you're given a chance?

Ihave 2 movies. First is Kallori. Given a chance, I would like to change the ending. The ending was saddy and I would love to change that to something better. (I'm not going to mention the ending as im not sure if other members has watched it, n I don't want to be the spoiler….😳) The second movie which I dislike the most from the start to the end ABCD. Until now I regretted watching it in cinema. (No offence to those whom enjoyed this movie).

And not to forget funny movies..... i can watch some of this movies again and again 😆 😆 😆

Like most of you, I too love comedies. My favourites are actually Kamal remakes - Avvai Shanmugi, Magalir Mattum, Vasoolraja. In that category, I would include Munnabhai 1 and 2. Old Sivaji comedies are also woth their weight in gold. Panchatanthiram was a disappointment after Avvai Shanmugi - I hated the lyrics that glorified Kamal's character - but must admit that it had its moments too.

Mozhi had a very good ending, suitable to the story. Lagaan (I know this is a Kollywood discussion, but I love this film so much) had a fantastic ending too. In fact, whether it is a happy ending or a sad ending depends on the flow of the story. I thought the ending in Anbe Sivam was appropriate, but my friend hated it.

One film which I absolutely hated the ending and I wished it was redone was Kutty. That film had a somber, depressing effect on me. It was horrible.

Mahanadhi had an OK ending but the film was so depressing that I refuse to see it again; likewise Pasamalar and Thulabaram. Such was their impact on me.
