Chapter 26
Arjun was staring at the deep blue Mediterranean sea from his balcony. It was quite windy and the high waves seemed to be completely in tune with the storm going on in his inner soul. The three words that he has been yearning to hear from Arohi was at last said but it was a pity that they were still mere words without any depth, any truth in them. He had always envisaged the day she would come back to him but never thought that he wouldn't be able to enjoy the moment, the closeness. If he wanted he could have accepted her proclaimed love but he was too scared for him...'.for her. He had been through the relentless pain, the agony of seeing her mistrust. For a second when she had told him that she loved him he wanted to believe her, wanted to wrap her beautiful self within him but when she told him that she knew the truth all his hopes were shattered. She had come back to him not because she loved him, trusted him but because she knew that she had been wrong. He had done the mistake of rushing her in the past but this time he was more in control of his emotions. Arohi had accused him of not being fair to her but what if she had done it again after few more years. He couldn't take the risk of having a marital life without complete trust from Arohi. He would rather have no one in his life than more memories with her to haunt him in later lives. He just wanted her to trust him completely'...was that too much to ask. No! he had been right. Whatever Arohi was feeling was definitely not love and sooner or later he was confident she would realise her misconception and move on in life. She would hate him for binding her to a loveless, trustless marriage later on. A sharp pain pierced through his heart with the thought of her being with somebody else but instantly dismissed the rising agony. It was better that way'...if not for him but definitely for her. He was doing this for her happiness. She might not understand it now but in few years time she would thank him for it.
"Arjun'...come and have breakfast dear'...Arohi is making your favourite Indian dish" Gloria Aunty's voice brought him back from his seclusion.
" I am not hungry'..."
"What is all this'...the girl has been up so early trying to make all your favourite things and you say you dont want to eat'...don't be ridiculous" the elderly lady chided him gently.
"See even you are taking her side...'..you have no idea about her antiques...'she doesn't even know what I like'."
"I might not be as intelligent as you but I do understand her as a woman...'.don't even think about underestimating a woman's love'...it is the same love that has bound me to your Uncle Juno for all these years even after his death...'.it is the same strength that can make a woman face any problems in the way of her love'..."
" The problem is in this case there is no love'...don't undersize your love by comparing it with hers'...if only she knew the true meaning of love...'it is all farce'...the moment she realised I have given up running behind her, she is trying to cast her spell on me'..." Arjun said trying to reason with his Aunty.
"I don't want to say anything to you any more...'.all I say you better not regret later'...destiny always doesn't give us a second chance Arjun'...happiness in knocking at your door'...don't turn it down'...I know there had been some misunderstandings in the past but please let go of all the hurt...'.start afresh "
"Don't worry Aunty'...I will never regret'...'trust me I know what I am doing'...'we are getting married for convenience not for love " he had no inclination of letting the lady know why he was pushing Arohi away. Nobody knew her better than him. Nobody would ever be able to love her more than him either but it is not only about him. It is about hers as well and he just couldn't let her make the same mistake.
"Fine'...you better hurry for breakfast then as the jeweller is coming for both of you to choose your wedding ring'.love or not you two are tying the holy knot of matrimony'...'don't forget Agatha was a pious Roman Catholic'...she would definitely want you to have a wedding ring on your finger'...to brand your togetherness for the world to see" the elderly lady's stern voice stopped him from making any further argument.
As Arjun entered the dinning room, the aromatic smell of paratha filled his nose...'it has been quite a while since he has had any Indian food...'.all of a sudden he realised how hungry he was. Little Aayan was sitting in his high chair chirping away to Spiros about his new car. Anna was toddling around Arohi helping her to dish all the food. Arohi was looking like the real lady of the house, very much in control. Love or not he was quite surprised by her gesture. She had really made quite a lot starting from paratha, aloo gobi, stuffed pepper, mushroom bhaji, aubergine kabab, gazar ka halwa. She had never cooked for him before so he had no idea about the taste but the thought definitely touched his soul. "Arjun'...let me serve you" Arohi asked him softly. He wanted to say no but looking at her ardent eyes he just couldn't say anything. Funnily enough he didn't even mind her overfeeding him. Even Glora Aunty enjoyed the food a lot. It was indeed delicious. A sense of pride touched him as everyone appreciated Arohi's effort. He had to take his word back, she did knew what he liked. She had made him feel very special, very wanted Nobody other than Gloria aunty had ever cooked for him. It had always been either hotel chefs or cooks at home. Despite of all his intentions not to let her creep through his mind and heart, the sensation felt wonderful. He felt at home with his woman and child. As he watched Arohi feeding Aayan , some moments of his unfulfilled cravings flashed through his mind. He had always dreamt of his mum like that'...laughing and loving all the time'...Only that this happiness was also temporary like everything else in his life'...
Breakfast was over when Spiros announced the arrival of the jeweller Mr Zakhis. Arohi glanced across Arjun to see a glimpse of any excitement about choosing the ring but it was completely immersed in a different world. Aayan was on his lap and both of them were riffling through a pile of picture books. His deep rhythmic voice narrating the story of "Three Little Pigs" was creating havoc with her hormones. Earlier while serving him breakfast she thought that she had touched a part of his heart but other than just saying a courteous "thanks" Arjun had remained silent. Although she had never cooked for him but she remembered the time when he used to come to their house and crave for proper Indian food. Over the years she had trained herself to cook the food that he liked. Despite of the fact that he hadn't mentioned anything about the taste but she knew it the moment he put aside his cutlery and started eating it with his hands that he was loving it. A smile of satisfaction touched her lips as she recollected the way he ate all his food and even licked the bowl of gazar ka halwa.
Her eyes shot up in open admiration and wonder as Mr Zakhis opened his briefcase filled with rows and rows of diamond rings of different sizes, cuts, colours and shapes dazzling at her. Her father was a very wealthy man as well but she had never witnessed this kind of luxury. Each ring had a unique setting, glittering with fire and light...'.a statement of wealth She dreaded to even think about the price. But the main problems was they were not her style...'.too elaborate , too ostentatious.
"You both need to choose a ring for each other'...common Arjun help Arohi to choose a ring for you and then she can do the same ...'." Gloria aunty informed them as she sat next to Arohi.
"What is there to help...'.it is just a ring...'I am sure Arohi can manage" Arjun said without even bothering to look at her.
"Madam'...I know choosing of wedding ring can be very emotional and it requires time. Take your time, think about your future life partner and then select for him'..." Mr Zakhis explained kindly.
Arohi shyly looked at Arjun who was still playing with Aayan. A ring to suit her man...'.the man that she loved so dearly'...the man of her dreams. She coughed deliberately to grab his attention but Arjun seemed to be adamant to show his disinterest in the entire process. A twinkle gleamed through her eyes. Bingo! She exactly knew how to make him give his input. After all it was his wedding as well.
Slowly she sat back on the couch and said loudly" My God what a lovely ring...'I love the size of the diamond'...how many carat"
"This special one dates back to 1700'...'and just under 6 carat"
Arohi looked up at Arjun as the jeweller spoke and could see him staring hard at her. But the moment she held his gaze he just turned away.
"It is very nice'...but not that dramatic'...'what about this one" she pointed her finger to an enormous one.
" This is classic Victorian...'.think of the crown jewels...'.very grand "
Arohi had to resist her chuckle as she saw Arjun gradually rising up from his seat and standing behind the jeweller to take a look at the ring. His eyes daring her to make such foolish choice but she was a lady with a mission who was not be daunted so easily.
"That is gorgeous but keeping in mind the grand mood and mannerism of my future husband I am really after something very ornate" Arohi said in the most innocent voice.
"I see Madam...'look at this 14th century Indian style'...just under 12 carats...'.it dates back to the Mughals period in India'"Mr Zakhis eyes glittered with pride and glory as he showed her a most enormous ring which were most probably worn by the kings of that time. She really had to control hard from laughing out loud thinking about Arjun wearing that and also the shocking expression in his eyes to see the ridiculous ring.
"Wedding rings are meant to be worn for life ..I am not wearing anything this enormous for the rest of my life'...people will call me Mr Bling'... " Before Arohi could say further Arjun abruptly moved further and leaning over the open brief-case pointed to a pear-shaped diamond solitaire in a platinum band "that one"
Mr Zakhis took the ring out of the case "One of my favourite ring" the jeweller said " Very classic and very very elegant, unaware of the tension between the couple standing in front.
"Exactly Arjun that's what I have been trying to tell you...'.marriages are for life'...not just for festivals'...it is a symbol of our commitment, love and vows to each other...'I am glad you realise its worth'...I was waiting to hear that from you" Arohi's voice full of emotion yet unwavering as her gaze held his.
"What about yours Madam" the jeweller flicked through the rings meant for women.
"As enormous as possible'...get one like Queen Victoria" sarcasm vivid in his voice.
"Do you have a feminine pair to the other ring " Arohi asked softly much to his surprise. " We would both like to have the same sort please"
"Of course I have'...a perfect match for a perfect couple" Mr Zakhis answered promptly. It was an exact replica of the other ring but a smaller. It was not only a perfect match but also a perfect size. The rings looked perfect on their fingers as if waiting only for them. A surge of pleasure ran through her whole body at the thought of getting married. She looked at Arjun who this time forgot to look away. Both of them could feel a pull that was way more than they could comprehend.
"I have got something else for you Madam'... something you can wear at the Charity Ball this weekend" Assuming that Arjun and Arohi would join the most prestigious Charity Ball event in Paphos the jeweller opened another case to show the most beautiful diamond necklace. Arohi eyes dazzled with pleasure looking at the exquisite style. The rectangular shaped diamonds sparkled at her. No wonder they say diamonds are women's best friend. But she diverted her attention thinking about the price and also knowing that she wasn't going to the Charity ball. She is a rich woman herself but considering that she had hardly earned anything of it. She closed the case and gave it back to the man. "It is gorgeous but not my style". Arjun couldn't not help but notice the play of emotions in her vibrant eyes. But he preferred to keep quite considering the situation.
After the jeweller left with his briefcase of rings, Arohi went forward and touched Aunty Gloria's feet for her blessing. The elderly lady who was not at all accustomed to the Indian tradition was complete taken aback with her gesture and so was Arjun. He had never thought that a modern girl like Arohi would do anything like that. But once again he felt a pull in his heart as he saw his aunty in tears, blessing them profusely. Just as he was about to leave his " We have both been invited to the Charity Ball...'If you want to come be ready by 8 p.m tomorrow evening'" not only surprised Arohi but also him. He had no intention of going to the ball and now all of a sudden apparently he was not only attending the event himself but also have invited Arohi to come with him''...
