Preet Singh was her business partner, good friend, and her fianc. They had been friends since she was a child back in Tehachapi. He had been there for her when she needed him most, after she had left Prem and came back home. He helped her finish her last year of university via mail. Later when he had bought an antique store he asked her to partner up with him, since she was an Art History major. So the entire Maan clan had moved to Carpentaria, into a house so that Mr. and Mrs. Maan could live with their three daughters and one adorable grandson.
Preet and Heer had been spending lots of time together, and started a relationship. Preet loved Aarav, it was there in his eyes, and he wanted to be a real father to Aarav. He even wanted to give Aarav his last name. Aarav was also fond of his 'Uncle P'. So that is why, when Preet had proposed, Heer had said yes. He was great guy and she knew that he would keep her happy.
Heer still remembered the frantic call she made to Preet once she found out she was pregnant. It had been a crisp Friday morning in London. She hadn't been feeling well for a few days and decided to take a pregnancy, just to be on the safe side, she hadn't expected the results to be positive. She did four tests, each came back with the same results – she was pregnant with Prem Jhuneja's child. At first she got excited, but it died just as soon as it had come up, once she thought about Prem's reaction. Prem never wanted children or a wife for that matter. What was Heer going to do?
After looking at all the options she knew what she had to do, she had to get away. She couldn't call her family, not at that moment, the only other person that came to mind was Preet; so she did what her gut told her to do…she called her childhood friend…
-Flashback-
Late February 2002
She told herself that she would not cry, she would just tell Preet that she needed his help and that was it; set in her ways Heer dialed his home phone number with shaky fingers.
*Ring Ring* *Ring Ring* *Ring Ring*
"Oh come on Preet, pick up the bloody phone!" Heer cursed. She knew that if he didn't answer the phone now, she wasn't going to call back for a second time. Heer breathed a sigh of relief second later when she heard the phone being answered.
"Hello?" came Preet's voice, clearly he had been sleeping.
"Hello, Preet?" Heer asked, not sure if she really had the right number.
"Heer, is that you?"
"Yes, it's me. How are you Preet?"
"Heer…" the change in his voice told her that he was now fully awake, "What happened? Is everything alright?"
"Of…of course, why do you ask?"
"It's not every day that you call me at…3 o' clock in the morning." Preet said after a pause. "Come on Heer, I know something is up. You didn't just call to say 'what's up' at this time of night."
Heer scolded herself for not calculating the time difference between London and California. "Oh, I'm so sorry Preet. I'll call you back." Heer was about to hang up when Preet intervened...
"Oh no you don't. You wake me up at this God-forsaken hour, so you will tell me what is the matter. Out with it Heer."
Knowing that if she didn't tell him now she would never be able to she broke down, "Oh Preet, I'm in trouble." she cried.
"My God Heer, what happened? Why are you crying?" his voice was full of concern and fear.
"I'm…I'm pregnant." Heer blurted out.
Heer told Preet all about how she had been living with Prem in this no-strings relationship, keeping it hidden from her family and him. She told him about how Prem never wanted kids and now she didn't know what to do. After over an hour on the phone Heer hung up, her mind made up on what she had to do.
Two days later she came out of the Tom Bradley International Arrivals Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). She was scared, confused and emotionally; she just kept walking looking for the familiar face. Preet had spotted her first and waved to her. Seeing Preet she ran to him and embraced him as if her life depended on it. She cried on him as he held her.
"What am I going to do Preet? What am I going to do?"
"Shh, don't cry. We will figure everything out together, and what ever has to be done, I'll be there for you." He reassured her.
"I am having this baby Preet, I can't think about anything else; but I know that I have to have this baby." Heer said that, not sure where it came from, but she felt that he needed to know.
"Of course Heer, I wouldn't have thought of anything else."
-Flashback End-
From that moment onward, Preet had been at her side just like he had said he would be. He was there when they broke the news to her parents, he was there to protect, shield, and defend her when her parents went ballistic. He was there when she had crazy cravings in the middle of the night, when she was scared out of her mind about raising a child. Preet had even taken the Lamaze class with her during her last trimester. He had even held her hand when she was I labor, until her mother came and took over. He had been the first one to hold Aarav after Heer and her mother.
He had been there for the good, the bad and the very ugly; not complaining even once. Her parents and sister thought of Preet Singh as the Knight in Shining Armor that rescued their daughter/sister; even Heer had to admit…it sure looked like it.

"You do love him don't you?" he mother asked, and brought Heer back to reality.
"Who?" Heer asked a bit dazed.
"Preet, your fianc. Who else?" her mother retorted.
Heer didn't know what to say. She cared for Preet, deeply cared for him, but love? She didn't feel for Preet what she had felt for Prem, not by a long shot. Besides, she didn't trust such feeling anymore, not after Prem. It was safer for her heart is she just cared for people.
"Preet knows I'm not ready to get married yet. I can't do anything until Aarav gets settled into school this fall. There will be enough changes with that, I don't want to add to Aarav now. I don't want to disrupt his life with more changes," Heer said as an excuse.
"I'm just saying, maybe if things were more permanent with you and Preet, you would be able to handle Prem better. I don't want to see you get hurt like that again," her mother said.
Heer got up and hugged her mother, "Oh Mom, don't worry, he won't hurt me again. I won't let him get close enough this time."
"But I still think he needs to know about Aarav, he deserves to know. I think he would be over the moon if he knew he had a son, and that too an angel like Aarav," her mother argued.
"I hate to disappoint you Mother but Prem Jhuneja would not take nicely to the fact that he has a child. Trust me, I know. It is the only thing that we argued about. If I ever brought it up he would get mad, so terribly mad..." her thoughts began to trail off as she remembered their heated exchanges in the past.
"If you say so, but it's his loss." He mother replied.
"Would you and Dad mind watching Aarav, if I went over now?" Heer asked hesitantly.
"That's my girl! Go and get it over with. We would love to watch Aarav, I can't wait to hear just how many they 'caught' today."
Both women laughed at the antics of the 'men' in their lives. Heer went to go and get changed for her meeting with the CEO of Jhuneja Industries, such arrogance she thought. The sooner she got this over with, the sooner she could move on with her life...her life with her Aarav...her life with her son.
