Shafaq

A young 22 year old, innocent looking girl ran across the fields with her dupatta flying over her shoulders. Yes it was Heer and following her was a panting Meher who could no longer chase her didi.

"Heer Didi ruk jaye na. Main aur nahi bhaag sakti. Mujhe bhook lag rahi hai!" Meher complained.

"Meher! Tumein khaane keh ilawa kuch aur bhi soojta hai kya? Heer questioned knowing what her sister's answer would be.

"Nahi toh didi. Aapko ab pata chala kya and I thought you were the smarter one!" kidded Meher.

"Uff tu bhi na. Ghar chal phir bataati hoon who's the smarter one. Aaj toh main teri shakayat kar keh hi rahoongi Bauji seh. Uno ne tumhe kuch zyaada hi sar par charhaya wa hai."

"Karlo Didi...bas thore aur din kar payengi aap. Phir toh aapki shaadi hojayegi na."

This disheartened Heer more than making her happier. She knew that her alliance had been fixed with Prem for many years now. But she was fed up of waiting. It had been two years now since she had graduated. She would be turning 22 soon and although her parents didn't show it, their concerns regarding her marriage particularly were evident. Heer's father and Lalit Chachu hadn't spoken since he had left 18 years ago let alone take this decision forward. Heer felt it was pointless waiting but her mum would always end up giving her hope in some way or the other by telling her that this was her destiny and if she was to get married then it would be with Prem and no one else.

"Meri shaadi ki chor, ab toh tere liye bhi dulha dhoondna shuru kar lena chahiye. Waise bhi tere parhai mein toh dhayaan rehta nahi. Shaadi hi karle" she said trying to lighten the tense situation.

"Haan dhoond lo didi, mere liye toh Canada se kisi ne nahi ana, toh dhoondna toh parega hi na?"

Soon they were laughing and kidding around with each other once again. The two sisters shared an unbreakable bond. If one cried then so did the other and If one was happy then the other would rejoice with her too. They made there way home as it was getting dark.

"Heer, Meher....kidhar reh gayi thi dono. Tumhare bauji kitne pareshaan hogaye the. Acha suno tum dono ko toh pata hi hai ke kal main aur tumhare bauji Ludhiana jaa rahe hain. Balwant ne bulaya hai. Kuch shares ki problem hogayi hai. Uske liye. Tum dono akele reh lo gi na?" she sounded concerned, less about the shares and more about leaving her two daughters home alone.

"Haan Maa....humein kuch nahi hoga. Fikr mat karo. Lekin aapke saath Meher ko bhi jaana chaahiye. Aap hi toh keh rahi thi keh uska wahan dakhla karaana chaati hain. Ek ache se college mein." Heer reminded her mother.

"Aree haan. Lekin phir beta Heer...tu ghar mein akeli kaise rahe gi? Hum tumhe kaise chor kar jaa sakte hain?"

"Heer bachi nahi hai Teji! She can look after herself. Waise bhi mujhe apni beti par poor bharosa hai. Itni achi tarha seh ghar ko sambhaalti hai." Balraaj said with pride.

And so it was decided that Balraaj, Teji and Meher would depart for Ludhiana the next morning. They planned on returning the same day as although Heer was fully capable and responsible enough to stay home alone they just couldn't. They didn't have the heart to do so.

"The tickets aren't valid? What do you mean they aren't valid?" Lalit asked angrily.

The lady at the counter explained to him that apart from Prem and Preet's tickets, the rest of the family's tickets hadn't been validated by the agency. Lalit could not believe his ears. He blamed Preet for purchasing tickets from an unauthorized and illegal agency. But before he could say more, he realized where he was. Gayatri suggested buying new tickets from the airport itself but it being a peak season, there was nothing available for another two days. Lalit came to the conclusion that Prem and Preet would leave for India immediately and the rest of the family would follow suit in two days. After handing over all the information needed to reach his home-town Ambala to Prem, he bid them goodbye and so did the rest of the family.

The flight to India was of-course tiring and exhausting but for Prem it was a turning point in his life. He was about to meet his life-partner and he couldn't wait any longer. Preet however was just relieved that his dad hadn't been able to get his hands on him at the airport, it being a public place.

Upon, their arrival in India the following morning, Prem and Preet rented a car which would take them to Ambala. It was all going as per their plan, until Preet without informing his elder brother disappeared. This angered Prem greatly but due to his nature he couldn't remain upset with Preet for long. After an hour of searching all over Mumbai he found Preet at a small cafe with none other than a girl. He was once again on one of his dates. It shocked Prem, how quickly Preet had managed to get a girl. It was amazing. He had planned on pulling him by the ear and shoving him into the car once he found him but Preet who had seen his angry brother by now, sweet-talked him into letting Preet stay behind for a couple of days. At least until the rest of the family arrived. However, Prem was apprehensive, how could he just go to Ambala all alone. How would he introduce himself? What would he say? But as Preet could care less and would be of no help to Prem in Ambala anyway, he decided to let him stay behind.

"Preet, if you're not there by tomorrow evening. Main bauji ko phone kardoonga"

"Bhai....I promise...ab aap jaaye....bhaabhi se milna nahi kya?" he said making Prem blush intensely.

Prem along with the driver of the car he had rented made their way to Ambala. It was early in the afternoon. He wondered throughout his journey what Heer would be doing. What she looked like? What her likes and dislikes were? She had invaded his thoughts and was there to stay. If he was this anxious without even meeting her, what would he do when she was actually in front of him, he wondered.

________________________________________________________________________

At the same time, Heer was now busy cleaning. Her parents and Meher had left a while back and would hopefully be back in the evening. Since she had nothing important to do, she decided to clean. Half of the house had been done and the other half still remained incomplete. When Heer was alone, she'd often think about Prem, the man who destiny had paired her with. She didn't know anything about him apart from the fact that she was too marry him and the childhood memories she had of him.

Heer also began wondering what Prem did, didn't do? What he liked and disliked? She had this sudden desire to meet him. All the hope her mother had given her over the years had begun to effect her. Her faith that Prem would return to marry her was alive once again.

All her thoughts however were interrupted by the door bell. She turned to look at the clock. It was just half past 4. it couldn't be her parents and Meher as they were due to arrive later. At first, her sixth sense told her not to answer the door but her heart told her there was nothing to be affraid off. Ambala was a small town and everyone in it was like one big happy family. She just thought someone would be checking on her as almost everyone by now would have found out she was home alone. News particularly gossip went around fast in Ambala as well. That was the disadvantage of living in such a small town! Nothing could be kept hidden for long.

Heer mustered up the courage and began taking baby steps towards the door. In the meantime the person at the door rang the bell again. One thing was clearly evident - he/she was very impatient.

Finally once she had opened the door, stood before her a well-built, handsome young man. She stared at him questioningly whilst wondering in her thoughts who this stranger was.

"Ji aap kaun?" she eventually asked and when she got no reply she asked again this time more loudly thinking he didn't hear her the first time.

Her voice was so fascinating. More so, her simple attire of a Shalwar Kameez and dupata draped casually around her made her look so beautiful and elegant. Prem didn't even know if this was Heer, it could have been anyone. her sister Meher, another relative perhaps but something told his heart it had to be her. When her voice brought him back from his thoughts he finally answered "Main....Prem....Prem Juneja. Yeh Balraaj uncle ka ghar hai?" he asked in an attempt to confirm whether he was even at the right place.

That name didn't just ring bells but it rang a lot more. Heer couldn't believe it was her Prem, who stood before her at that very moment. She composed herself and invited him in. The weather was horrible outside and there was no need to be affraid anymore. The look on her face had told him she had recognized him but he had to make sure this was really Heer. After Destiny itself was knocking on her door, how could she turn it back.

"Aur tum? Kya tumhara naam Heer hai?" he asked hopefully.

"Ji Main Heer hi hoon." she answered looking down at the floor or more so his shoes. She wanted to run away from there right then. She felt so
uneasy yet so comfortable in his presence. Heer felt it was necessary to inform her parents. They'd be so happy when they found out. Excusing herself, she went to make a phone call. After a couple of tries she got through to her parents. She informed them immediately and as expected they were ecstatic. Balraaj couldn't believe it. He wanted to return home immediately but the weather didn't allow it. It probably had something else in planned. As a matter of fact when Heer had phoned them they were delayed at the station and busy trying to get seats on a bus to Ambala. They didn't want to worry her or make her conscience by telling her that she may have to spend the night alone. Well not exactly alone, as she would now be with her to-be husband whom she had just met for the first time.

When Heer returned to the living room she finally questionned "Kya baaqi sab nahi aye?"

"Woh tickets mein problem hogayi thi, Bauji aur baaqi sab parso pohunch jayenge. Tab tak aapko akele mujhe bardaasht karna parega." he joked and surprisingly Prem had never before in his life made any type of joke with anyone.

"Huh? Main khaana lagaoon kya?" she asked trying to change the topic. Was Prem flirting with her indirectly because if he was, then he wasn't doing a pretty good job. It was quite clear she was the first girl in his life and she liked that.

"Abhi toh sirf paanch bajey hain. Itni jaldi main nahi khana khaata. Tumney khaana hai toh zaroor khalo." he answered practically.

Heer noticing the time, cursed herself in her thoughts. How could she have been so stupid.

"Woh...I had no idea it was just 5. Kuch peene koh toh lenge na?"

"Bilkul...coffee agar mujhe khud baanane do gi toh." he stated.

Heer was shocked. How could she let Prem make himself a cup of coffee. He was a guest and the to-be son-in-law of this house. If her Parents found out they'd be furious and so she refused. But he somehow managed to get her to agree and they ended up making it together. A cup for him and one for Heer. In Prem's presence she had completely forgotten about everything else. Not once had Prem however brought up the topic of their marriage. He for some reason felt that like him, Heer had no idea still or she only recently found out about their alliance. But he was wrong. Heer had waited for him all these years. Why hadn't he been able to see that when he had told her who he was. Heer silently wondered why if Prem even spoke he only mentioned childhood memories, what his dad had told him about Balraaj uncle over the years and his family. Nevertheless Heer thoroughly enjoyed his company. He was quite shy just like her and had to be probed in order to speak up but eventually he did. After they had bonded over something as simple as a cup of coffee, Heer took Prem to the guest room leaving him to settle in.

It was after all this that she realized that it was almost 8 and her parents and Meher had still not arrived. She called them and learnt from her father that due to the bad weather all the buses had been delayed. They had no idea how long they would be either. Heer lessened their tension by assuring them that she was fine. But was she really? An apprehensive Heer made her way to the kitchen once again but this time to make dinner just for the two of them considering her family wouldn't be returning anytime soon and she couldn't starve Prem for this now could she?
