'Byomkesh Bakshi' shooting in Kolkata office hub

The city's busy office hub BBD Bag, commonly called Dalhousie Square, has become the shooting site for Dibakar Banerjee's 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy' today.

The area, which wears a deserted look on Sundays, took on a yesteryear look complete with vintage cars, vintage tramcars, horse drawn carriages, 'kirtan' singers dressed in ochre and men in dhotis and kurtas to revive the 1940s feel, in which the story of Bengal's famous fictional detective is set.

The action was concentrated near the Standard Life Assurance Building, considered as one of the finest buildings around Lal Dighi (formally Tank Square) in the area which has large concentration of colonial buildings. This is the second shoot of the film in the city, sources in the film's production unit said. The first was held last month.

The spot, which is the beautiful archway of the 120-year-old stucco building, was the place of shooting of scenes of Tigmanshu Dhulia's 'Bullet Raja'. Dibakar had said not a single place in the city, not even in the old northern part, retains the pure look of the 40s. In some places the houses remain the same but either a modern multi-storied or a shopping mall has sprung up beside them, he said.

Dibakar had bought the rights of all 33 Byomkesh Bakshi stories written by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. Sushant Singh Rajput of 'Kai Po Che' fame is the main lead.

Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva', parts of his film 'Raavan', Sujoy Ghosh's 'Kahaani', Anurag Basu's 'Barfi'! have been previously shot in the city.

Shoot of Sushant Singh Rajput starrer Byomkesh Bakshi brightens the BBD Bag area in Kolkata on Sunday

16 min ago | TellychakkarTeam

The BBD Bag area (Dalhousie Square) in Kolkata, that generally wears a deserted look on Sundays, was seen full of activity yesterday when it turned into a shooting site for Dibakar Banerjee's under-production film Detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

The area was seen full of vintage cars, vintage tramcars, horse drawn carriages, kirtan singers dressed in ochre and men in dhotis and kurtas to revive the 40s feel in which the story of Bengal's famous fictional detective is set.

The action was concentrated near the Standard Life Assurance Building, considered as one of the finest buildings around Lal Dighi (formally Tank Square) in the area which has large concentration of colonial buildings.

It is gathered that this is the second shoot of the film in the city; the first was held last month.

Incidentally, Banerjee had bought the rights of all 33 Byomkesh Bakshi stories written by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. Sushant Singh Rajput plays the main lead in the film.

Earlier, the area, which is a beautiful archway of the 120-year-old stucco building, was used for the shooting of a few sequences of Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullet Raja.

For some years, filmmakers have been shooting in Kolkata. Films shot there include Mani Ratnam's Yuva, parts of his film Raavan, Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani, Anurag Basu's Barfi and most recently YRF's Gunday.
