n his documentary photography book Living The Dream: The Life of The Bollywood' Actor, eminent shutterbug Mark Bennington writes, "In Mumbai, the Bollywood dream pours down like the monsoon, drenching every starry-eyed actor with hopes of fame and fortune." Down the decades, small-screen actors have successfully transitioned into silver screen stars. The journey of India's biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan from TV to films is the stuff of legends. In the last one year, two names have stood out in this quest.

Sushant Singh Rajput
Age:
27
Films: Kai Po Che!, Shuddh Desi Romance
Upcoming Projects: Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, Peekay, Paani

From Barry John's theatre classes to the quintessential lover boy of prime-time TV to the graceful dancing star who made Madhuri Dixit misty-eyed with his acts in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 4 to a blistering debut in Kai Po Che! to being touted as "the next big thing" (and the "next SRK"), Patna-born Rajput has come a long way from being a background dancer at the 51st Filmfare Awards.

A film critic wrote about his performance in Kai Po Che!: "The actor has an indescribable presence, and it's clear from his confidence and distinct likeability that a star is born."

Today A-list producers are queuing up to sign him while new-wave directors are eager to explore new subjects riding on his acting skills and appeal. He's the next Byomkesh Bakshi in Dibakar Banerjee's adaptation of the detective series; he has replaced Hrithik Roshan in Shekhar Kapur's (who said "Sushant is one of the most inspiring young actors to emerge out of India") much-awaited Paani; and is acting with Aamir Khan in Rajkumar Hirani's Peekay.

Ayushmann Khurrana
Age:
29
Films: Vicky Donor, Nautanki Saala
Upcoming Projects: Bewakoofian, Hamara Bajaj

Seven years and multiple TV stints"talent-hunt winner, VJ and reality show host"later, the Chandigarh lad switched to the silver screen in 2012 with Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor. Khurrana charmed audiences with his performance as a sperm donor; he also penned lyrics, scored music and lent his voice to Pani Da Rang, the Punjabi love ballad that topped the year's music charts. He went on to pick up two Filmfare awards, and a host of other accolades for his efforts in the film.

The versatile Khurrana made his second splash with Nautanki Saala. Though the film fared moderately, he was lauded for his comic timing and composing two songs, O Heeriye and Saddi Gali.

While his raw talent has wooed critics and filmmakers of repute, his easy on-screen and off-screen persona has made him a hit with fans. Women find him adorable and men, especially young television actors who dream of having a film career, continue to get inspired by him.

The Range Rovers

The Range Rovers: Who was box-office favourite in 2013?
Suhani Singh January 3, 2014 | UPDATED 12:46 IST

Of the ten highest-grossing films of 2013, the top three positions were occupied by Krrish 3, Chennai Express and Dhoom: 3. All three hit the Rs.200-crore mark. All were big-budget films with bankable stars-Hrithik Roshan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. Two of them were instalments of successful action franchises and one a film by a director renowned for his formulaic action entertainers. But the real surprise of 2013 was the films occupying slots four and five: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Goliyon Ki Rasleela... Ram-leela. The former had Bollywood's rising star Ranbir Kapoor, who until then had only one Rs.100-crore film to his credit (Barfi!). The romantic comedy had no car crashes or bloodied faces but it still raked in Rs.190 crore. In Goliyon Ki Rasleela... Ram-leela, Ranveer Singh was a rambunctious, po*n-parlour running Romeo who falls for a feisty Leela. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's take on a Shakespeare classic saw Ranveer score his biggest box-office hit and enter the Rs.100-crore club. With these films, Ranbir and Ranveer proved they are ready to take the baton from the three Khans and their older counterparts.

There is little common between the two. Ranbir, 31, is a member of Hindi cinema's most renowned family. Ranveer, 28, is the outsider. The son of a Sindhi businessman, he grew up dancing to songs of Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda. Their personalities are also poles apart. Ranbir is reserved, while Ranveer is boisterous. Both actors have shown they are not averse to taking risks. Ranveer gambled on Lootera, a period romance, which may not have set the cash register ringing, but demonstrated his range as an actor. "I'd rather do a Lootera that people love, than a film that is s*** but does Rs.150 crore (business)," says Ranveer. Ranbir turned into a potty- mouthed ruffian in Besharam. But the response was tepid when he tried to play the masala hero. The message seems to have been-don't follow the pack, do your own thing.

From Left: Ranbir Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh
Not bothered about the box-office returns, the duo choose to build their stardom on the films they do. They find themselves in a promising period in Bollywood when audiences are accepting of films in which the content takes precedence. They have ensured that they are not pigeonholed as romantic, action or comic heroes, but stand out as versatile.

In 2014, both have two releases that give a peek into their ambitions. Ranveer starts off with Gunday, reminiscent of 1970s films with two heroes with lots of action, drama and romance. Next is Kill Dill, directed by his mentor Shaad Ali. Both are produced by Yash Raj Films, which gave him his first break. Meanwhile, Ranbir is in no mood to play it safe. He collaborates with two Anurags. First up is Basu, with whom he co-produces Jagga Jasoos, a detective film. Then there's Kashyap, whose Bombay Velvet stars Ranbir as a street fighter in 1960s Mumbai.

Spicing up the race is Sushant Singh Rajput, 27, who makes a strong case as a leading man with two big-banner films by reputed directors. There's Rajkumar Hirani's P.K., with Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma, and Dibakar Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

Among actresses, Deepika Padukone will hope to ride high on the laurels of 2013, of which there were many-Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Goliyon Ki Rasleela... Ram-leela-all four of which struck Rs.100-crore plus at the box office. She even outshone Shah Rukh in Chennai Express with an endearing comic act and displayed intensity as the devoted Juliet in Bhansali's opus.

More self-assured, Deepika, 28, signals that she seeks substantial parts as she shares the stage with male stars. This year, she collaborates with Farah Khan, who introduced her to Bollywood. As the leading lady of Happy New Year, she will play a dancer. Then there's Finding Fanny Fernandes, which sees her work with director Homi Adajania. At her recent success bash in Mumbai, Deepika said she hopes to work with three top stars-Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan. One of them may be a reality soon as talks of her signing Sooraj Barjatya's new film with Salman become stronger. She may not be seen on screens as much, but Deepika will have a busy 2014, beginning shooting for Imtiaz Ali's next with Ranbir.

Keeping Deepika on her toes is Parineeti Chopra, 25, who has put out some fine acts, with last year's Shuddh Desi Romance a highlight. In 2014, she has three films-Hasee Toh Phasee, Daawat-e-Ishq and Kill Dill. "I don't want any image for me," she says. "I want me to be a variety." Parineeti doesn't conform to preconceived notions of a Bollywood heroine-thin, tall, sexy and glamorous-and regales audiences with the dynamism last seen in actresses such as Kajol and Rani Mukerji. "It's easier as they are more open to new faces," says Parineeti, but "we have to prove ourselves as we are not stars (yet)."

Together, actors like Ranbir, Ranveer, Parineeti and Deepika are bringing much-needed vigour and charisma to the screen. They are willing to step out of their comfort zone. And this is yielding results. "I thought unless there's a big star, I'd not get a film," says Parineeti. "But my first four are with new guys." It's this novelty that Bollywood is banking on in 2014.

First day first shoot: Sushant as Byomkesh

The place: Saheb Kuthi, Agarpara.

The setting: 1942 Calcutta.

The star: Sushant Singh Rajput.

Dibakar Banerjee kickstarted the shoot of his Byomkesh adventure early on Tuesday on the palatial grounds of Saheb Kuthi in Agarpara. Dressed in a crisp white dhoti and short kurta, sporting a thick moustache and just the hint of a stubble, Kai Po Che! man Sushant shot for Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, that traces the beginnings of Saradindu Bandopadhyay's super sleuth.

For the greater part of Tuesday, Sushant shot for a sequence involving a vintage car at Saheb Kuthi, done up as the home of one of the key characters of the film.

The last big Bolly film Saheb Kuthi had played host to was Mani Ratnam's 2009 filmRaavan starring Abhishek Bachchan and wife Aishwarya.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi, which is being produced by Yash Raj Films, traces the rise of Byomkesh from a youngster fresh out of college to a man with a knack for solving mysteries. "My Byomkesh isn't a satyanweshi yet, but is well on his way to becoming one," Dibakar, the man behind films like Shanghai and Khosla Ka Ghosla, had told t2when he was on a recce for his film last September.

The month-long schedule of Detective Byomkesh Bakshi will see the cast shoot at familiar Calcutta spots like the streets of Dalhousie and the lanes and bylanes of Tiretti Bazar. Actor-director Arindam Sil's Nothing Beyond Cinema is line-producing the film.

Dunno if this has been posted before. It is a seven-page article by Raja Sen on Byomkesh Bakshi series and the films made on them. Gives a good insight. Sushant really has a difficult task in hand since Byomkesh is an extremely revered character for Bengalis.

Excerpts from the article mentioning Dibakar's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and Sushant:

Over in Mumbai, having bought the rights to all 32 stories in every language other than Bengali, Dibakar Banerjee has announced his own Byomkesh Bakshi film, with Kai Po Che! star Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role.

...

MEANWHILE IN MUMBAI, Dibakar Banerjee has rolled his sleeves up, joined forces for the first time with the gargantuan Yash Raj Films, and aims to take on his own Sharadindu story in a film with a peculiarly provocative title. "It's not just Detective Byomkesh Bakshy with a Y," said Banerjee, "but it's Bakshy with an exclamation mark at the end. The exclamation stands for youth and action." Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, then. The director defended his unusual choice of spelling by saying that Sharadindu Banerjee had never spelt Byomkesh's name in English, which made Bakshy as valid as Bakshi. "I know that Byomkesh didn't like to be called a detective, but Sharadindu babu said, through the character of Ajit, that while Byomkesh didn't care for the appellation, he was at heart a private detective. He just hated to be slotted."Banerjee will start shooting the film, which is based on two of the original adventures, and features a Byomkesh just out of college, in January, and wrap up by the end of 2014. It is the director's most ambitious project to date, a massive period film for which he has turned music composer as well. Banerjee's Byomkesh will remain the quintessential Bengali, except that he won't have "any funny Bengali accent" in a Hindi film."My Byomkesh will be a young and sharp guy who will be accepted as a sleuth by a pan-Indian audience. Byomkesh will be in his 20s and be someone who has healthy interests in life, and loves the company of women. We even want to take Byomkesh to the global audience," Banerjee earlier said in an interview to the Indian Express. And Sushant Singh Rajput"fresh from the success of Kai Po Che! and Shuddh Desi Romance"seems well aware of his responsibility as the first Hindi Byomkesh. "I spent some time in Calcutta with various families who seem to have formed their own versions of Byomkesh," Rajput said over a phone conversation. "Byomkesh belongs to them and there is a huge responsibility not to disappoint them. He is, after all, the first real detective in Indian literature." Rajput's been catching up on his predecessors, and feels Uttam Kumar was "slightly stylised but believable" and Rajit Kapur was impressive because of his simplicity, and because "there is no playing to the galleries." Their Byomkesh seems to be aiming for gritty naturalism.

...

Banerjee, however, said that he found a truly interesting conflict in the idea of 22- and 23-year-old boys, young men "detecting and coming to know" how life works. "This is pure detection, before the maturity and the cynicism sets in."Rajput appears determined to live the part. He's taken three months off after the September release of Shuddh Desi Romance to immerse himself in the Byomkesh novels and Bengali culture, and Dibakar's prescribed him a mammoth reading list, which includes all the Sharadindu Banerjee novels, Nirad C Chaudhuri's Autobiography Of An Unknown Indian, and books on the history of Calcutta. "I want to start by understanding pre-Independence Bengal," said Rajput. The actor broke down his process: "My understanding of the character is formed by first studying all the similarities and dissimilarities I have with the character. That gives rise to a binary state between yourself and the character, and when the stand-by light is on and the camera begins to roll, you react"in that state"to whatever the director says." Binary state? Byomkesh might well approve.

Sushant Singh Rajput on fashion and style

One word that describes me best
I would like to label myself as a 'Taciturn' (a usually reserved person).

3 things I never leave home without
My mobile, wallet and iPod. I don't think I can move around without any of these.

Fashion to me is...
Individualism

I'd describe myself as
I'm still trying to figure that out.

My style mantra is
To be what you are, without trying to overdo anything. If you are confident about yourself and wear what you love, you will exude a style of your own.

Style turn-off in women
I despise women wearing too much makeup. It hides their actual beauty.

5 essentials of a men's wardrobe
A man should definitely own a couple of blue denims, white crew neck T-shirt, a versatile blazer, comfortable pair of boxers and coloured sneakers.

My ideal outfit for

A fun party: T-shirt and jeans. I like to keep it casual.

A formal work setting: Would ideally depend on the environment.

A casual day out with friends: A cool jacket, V-neck T-shirt and denims.

A hot date: I would ideally like to ask my girl what she's wearing and dress accordingly.

A valuable male grooming tip
Would definitely be to practice proper hygiene.

My favourite fashion trend
I love layering with great fitting jackets.

A style trick for an instant cool quotient
A great pair of shoes saves your day.

My brand fixation
I am loyal to Ermennegildo Zegna.

Must-possess shoes for men
One must invest in a cool pair of sneakers. You can double it up as a formal as well as a casual wear.

My style icon would be
Ryan Gosling. He's got a style of his own.

A perfume I swear by
Bleu de Chanel

A colour that dominates my wardrobe
Black. It is a statement colour on its own.

My ultimate fashion destination
It has to be Paris.

The most stylish person in showbiz
Milind Soman

If I had to spend my life wearing just one kind of outfit, it would be
T-shirt and boxers. It's the most comfortable wear.

On fashion blunders
I hope I stop making them
