Movies based on novels are often disappointing, however Abhishek Kapoor proved this adage completely wrong with 'Kai po che', a well made film based on Chetan Bhagat's 'The 3 mistakes of my life'. Another myth it breaks is that only big stars can make a good film. Right casting, talent, script, narration and the right passion is what you need to make a film that is entertaining and at the same time leaves a lasting impression.
Now, for those who haven't read the book, the film is about three childhood buddies with completely different personalities and a few natural / political incidents that change their lives. Backdrop is the raw and progressing Ahmadabad of early 2000s. With little or no money in hand, the trio sets off to make their dreams come true.
'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Rang De Basanti', '3 Idiots', the industry has seen many films on friendship, and all of them were bumper hits. You can say the same about KPC that takes you to an interesting journey keeping you engaged very closely to the lives of the protagonist. Be it the shy, calculative businessman Govind or the passionate, free soul Ishaan, or the vulnerable Omi who is torn between family and friendship.
Kapoor narrates the story that has various shades, each more interesting than the other. Add to that Anay Goswami's poetic screenplay, Hitesh Sonic's astounding background score and Amit Trivedi's soulful music. Kai Po Che is a winner in terms of the casting. Sushant Singh Rajput is a natural stunner. He adds colours to his character taking it to another level altogether. Raj Kumar Yadav completely stuns. His transition as an actor is completely evident with this film as he gets into not just into the nerves of the character but each and every minute cell of it. Amit Sadh too is impeccable. He lets his eyes and body language do most of the talking and takes away the cake. None the three can be said to have overshadowed anyone, as they are equally good and proficient in their art. Amrita Puri is decent however her track does take away a bit from the power pact film.
Even if you have read Bhagat's book, you do want to know what will happen next in the film and that's the power of a wonderful director, who after 'Rock On' gives Indian cinema another reason to cherish the meaningful subject of the film, the artists and the narration.
Not watching it would definitely be one of the mistakes of your life.
