Movies based on novels are often disappointing, however Abhishek Kapoor proved this adage completely wrong with 'Kai po che', a well made film based on Chetan Bhagat's 'The 3 mistakes of my life'. Another myth it breaks is that only big stars can make a good film. Right casting, talent, script, narration and the right passion is what you need to make a film that is entertaining and at the same time leaves a lasting impression.

Now, for those who haven't read the book, the film is about three childhood buddies with completely different personalities and a few natural / political incidents that change their lives. Backdrop is the raw and progressing Ahmadabad of early 2000s. With little or no money in hand, the trio sets off to make their dreams come true.

'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Rang De Basanti', '3 Idiots', the industry has seen many films on friendship, and all of them were bumper hits. You can say the same about KPC that takes you to an interesting journey keeping you engaged very closely to the lives of the protagonist. Be it the shy, calculative businessman Govind or the passionate, free soul Ishaan, or the vulnerable Omi who is torn between family and friendship.

Kapoor narrates the story that has various shades, each more interesting than the other. Add to that Anay Goswami's poetic screenplay, Hitesh Sonic's astounding background score and Amit Trivedi's soulful music. Kai Po Che is a winner in terms of the casting. Sushant Singh Rajput is a natural stunner. He adds colours to his character taking it to another level altogether. Raj Kumar Yadav completely stuns. His transition as an actor is completely evident with this film as he gets into not just into the nerves of the character but each and every minute cell of it. Amit Sadh too is impeccable. He lets his eyes and body language do most of the talking and takes away the cake. None the three can be said to have overshadowed anyone, as they are equally good and proficient in their art. Amrita Puri is decent however her track does take away a bit from the power pact film.

Even if you have read Bhagat's book, you do want to know what will happen next in the film and that's the power of a wonderful director, who after 'Rock On' gives Indian cinema another reason to cherish the meaningful subject of the film, the artists and the narration.

Not watching it would definitely be one of the mistakes of your life.

Sushant Singh Rajput: "We worked very hard on Kai Po Che and it was shot with a lot of heart"

sushant-kpcinteriview01Imagine your first feature film, and not only is it with an award winning director, but it is based on a novel by a best selling author. That is what happened to Sushant Singh Rajput and he is very excited. The young actor is starring as one of the leads in Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che, which based on Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of my Life. The film tells the story of best friends Ishaan, Omi and Govind – young, ambitious and restless, who are trying to make a mark in the India of the early 2000's. In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India's next sporting superstars! What follows is without doubt the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams. In the film Sushant plays Ishaan, the cricket player but let's let him tell us more about that. We were able to catch the actor for a very quick and fun chat about the film. Check out what he told us about >Kai Po Che!

Was acting something you always wanted to do?
Not really. I think my first love is dancing so I started off in professional dancing and then I shifted to theater and that is how acting happened.

First thought when you learned you were going to be in Kai Po Che?
When I first read the script I really loved it. It was such a nice script. I really wanted to be a part of this film. When I found out I got the role after the audition and that I would be playing one of the leads in the film I was very excited. I was planning to come to the US for a filmmaking course and I dropped that idea and stayed here for this film…

Who is your character?
My character's name is Ishaan and he is a professional cricketer. He is very ambitious but at the same time I think you could say he is very myopic. But he is also very honest and very pure. He has some very diametrically opposite things to him and there is a lot of contradiction there in this character, so it was really interesting to play Ishaan in the film.

So you said he was a professional cricket player, so did you have to train a lot to do the cricket scenes?
Yes! For a good three to four months I trained with professional cricketers here in Bombay. Zaheer Khan and Ashish Mehra who are International players and are good friends of Abhishek Kapoor also gave me tips. So I am like now a professional cricketer! (Laughs)

So if you need something to fall back on…not that you will…you have cricket!
Yes! (Laughs)
sushant-kpcinterview03
Tell us about working with Abhishek Kapoor.
First I was very excited. Why? Because I had seen his first two films and I really loved them. Also at the time of the audition I knew he had won a National Award for his second film so I was very, very excited. But working with him, I tell you, he has got so much clarity as far as his script is concerned. He understands the feeling and everything in and of the scene. He is very, very, very passionate. That is so amazing. I think I am very lucky since I am working with him on my first film. I have learned a lot from him.

sushant-kpcinterview06
I was just watching the behind the scenes and it seems as if you guys really became friends, would you say that to be true?
I think something magical happened on the day we were auditioning together. There was something between us. It was not conscious. We were not acting for us, we were acting with each other – we were reacting to each other. We wanted to the scenes to be recognized and not to be on screen individually, do you get my point? We just wanted it be us reacting to each other to make the scene. I think that that camaraderie we had off screen got commuted to the chemistry you see on screen in the film. It was a wonderful experience working with both of them. They are very, very, very talented actors.

The music of this film is amazing, what are your thoughts on it?
Amit Trivedi is one of the finest we have in the industry. The lyrics were written by Swanand Kirkire… again one of the finest. I think for this film their whole team is superb. Including the actors in it. (Laughs) The cinematography by Anay Goswamy, the direction by Abhishek Kapoor, the music by Amit, these are fabulous, talented artists and all of them working together – once you have seen the film you will see what magic they have done.

How encouraging is it that the trailer and promos have gotten such rave reviews?
It is very exciting. Although the movie was made by one of the biggest productions houses in India – UTV and directed by Abhishek Kapoor who has a great reputation in the industry, even then, working with newcomers can be a risky thing. We were very apprehensive but we worked very hard for this film. It was shot with such heart and we are expecting that it should touch the heart. The response that we have seen on YouTube and Twitter is very exciting and very encouraging for us. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that people will come and watch the film and they will love it.

Now I believe you have some exciting projects coming up what can you tell me about those?
I have this film with Yash Raj and the film with Rajkumar Hirani so I have some exciting releases lined up this year.

Kai Po Che hits theaters on February 22nd!

Chetan Bhagat adaptation emerges victorious

It's safe to say that Hrithik Roshan's friendship tale Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Aamir Khan's Dil Chahta Hai has spoilt us rotten. These two coming-of-age blockbusters about three friends with deep pockets, posh accents, swanky cars and a penchant for fancy vacations had appeased our appetite for friends forever sagas. But when the trailers of Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che reached us, the big question was whether Bollywood still had an appetite for more male bonding? The trailer even included that cliched big-screen exercise of unadulterated joy among three boys as they hang out together and execute an impromptu jump into a water body (perhaps a trademark of director Abhishek Kapoor, who also used it in Rock On!!).

But my scepticism ended right there. The movie has a lot more than just thick friends, small misunderstandings and magical resolves at the end. Kai Po Che enters unfamiliar territory, where the heroes are scruffy and their misunderstandings real.

Set in troubled the Indian state of Gujarat in early 2000, the first-half introduces three friends trying to make it big in the world of highly competitive business by opening a cricket academy and sports store for hopefuls. There's Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) the effortlessly confident and passionate one, Omi (Amit Sadh), the hot-headed one, and Govind Patel (Raj Kumar Yadav) the pragmatic one. The first hour establishes their deep friendship. They belong to the middle-class India where money is not easy to come by and fun times don't always mean hitting swanky nightclubs. The first half cruises along comfortably as we get used to their endearing camaraderie. Perfectly cast, we feel invested in all these young boys. Rajput, with his effortless acting is a mix of Hrithik Roshan's looks and Shah Rukh Khan's impish on-screen charms; Sadh, with his mercurial temperament, exudes a nervous energy that defines his character Omi and Yadav wins you over with his earnest logic.

The going was so good that as a viewer you felt as if the good ride will be marred soon by the proverbial love tangles. Fortunately, drama doesn't always come in the female form in Kai Po Che. Kapoor uses the backdrop of two epic events that rocked Gujurat in early 2000s to propel his film forward.

The 2001 earthquake that killed thousands and the bloody Hindu-Muslim communal clashes that divided Gujurat are used as an effective backdrop for an explosive second-half. There's lots going on ' with their dreams, business and society crashing down around them ' but director Kapoor manages to keep the chaos under control.

It was also refreshing to see that all the three actors, who had substantial roles, did not stoop down to one-upmanship. The result? The viewers were rooting for all the underdogs.

Another plus: no songs to dilute the event-filled narrative. The background remains in the background but complements the film. Kai Po Che, a victory cry in kite flying festivals, emerges triumphant.

Don't miss this one.

Critic Review

Kai Po Che!
By Taran Adarsh, 20 Feb 2013, 13:13 hrs IST
A Chetan Bhagat novel is akin to reading a screenplay. You start visualizing the characters, the occurrences and episodes, the myriad emotions... like it were occurring in front of your eyes. What also makes Bhagat's novella interesting are its characters and the fact that they are hugely identifiable since they are based in India.

After 'one night @ the call center' [HELLO] and 'five point someone' [3 IDIOTS], the author's much-talked-about novel 'the 3 mistakes of my life' gets picked up for the big screen adaptation called KAI PO CHE. So what does the title [KAI PO CHE] mean, a question I have been asked more than a few times by cineastes. Translated simply, it's a call of triumph in Gujarati, when one kite flier cuts another's kite. Besides sounding different to the ears, the title metaphorically suits the premise of the story that's set in Gujarat. And how close is the motion picture to the much-acclaimed novel? Well, the episodes and characters are the same, except that Abhishek Kapoor tweaks and fine-tunes it [adapted for the screen by Pubali Chaudhuri, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor, Chetan Bhagat], since the medium is cinema.

KAI PO CHE cannot be slotted in any particular genre, in my opinion. It depicts unconditional friendship, it portrays bromance as well as romance, it illustrates politics, it exemplifies the passion for a sport [cricket], it talks of the events that unfolded in Gujarat [earthquake, Godhra massacre and the riots]. Multi genres, you could say. But, at heart, KAI PO CHE remains an emotional saga of three friends and how it stands the test of time. Very similar in spirit to the director's previous outing ROCK ON!, Farhan Akhtar's DIL CHAHTA HAI and Zoya Akhtar's ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA, yet different.

In KAI PO CHE, Abhishek brings alive the characters and events most persuasively. He borrows from the novel, but at the same time adds a lot to it with his deft execution. Resultantly, what emerges is a movie that evokes myriad emotions in the viewer. You smile, chuckle, get anxious and jittery, also moist eyed on several junctures. Attention-grabbing in entirety, absorbing you into its world from the onset itself, KAI PO CHE blends fiction and facts dexterously, recreating a story on celluloid that's credible and noteworthy.

KAI PO CHE narrates the story of three friends and is based in the city of Ahmedabad. The plot sees a young boy in Ahmedabad named Govind [Rajkumar Yadav] dream of starting a business. To accommodate his friends Ishaan [Sushant Singh Rajput] and Omi's [Amit Sadh] passion, cricket, they open a cricket goods and training shop. However, each has a different motive: Govind's goal is to make money; Ishaan desires to nurture Ali, a gifted batsman; Omi just wants to be with his friends. The events that transpire against the backdrop of all that occurred in the city during that time change the lives of each of the friends in very different ways.

Abhishek Kapoor has the trappings of a first-rate storyteller -- a fact that was evident in his first two endeavors [ARYAN, ROCK ON!]. In several ways, ROCK ON! and KAI PO CHE are analogous, yet divergent. While ROCK ON! was urban and metro-centric in terms of content, KAI PO CHE has the raw emotional appeal of three middle class guys that strikes a chord with just about anybody and everybody. In any case, a film like KAI PO CHE is damn difficult to make. It has several layers and sub-plots... a bigger canvas actually. And like I pointed out at the outset, it encompasses not just the story of three friends, but also real incidents that send a shiver down your spine.

Abhishek gets out of the comfort zone to attempt a daringly different movie. Also, with KAI PO CHE, the supremely talented craftsman takes giant strides as a film-maker. What's truly credible is the fact that he doesn't follow the rules or diktats prescribed by his peers in Bollywood. Instead, he charters a path that's pure and uncontaminated. Also, he opts for relative newcomers this time [casting director: Mukesh Chhabra], which could've boomeranged if the actors were incapable of infusing life in their respective characters.

After ROCK ON!, which had a lilting soundtrack, KAI PO CHE too has a winning musical score, composed by the inimitable Amit Trivedi. The songs are uncomplicated and mirror the spirit of the film wonderfully. More importantly, it's an unadulterated Indian soundtrack, not a cacophony of tunes put together to western beats. Swanand Kirkire's lyrics are poignant and leave an impression. The background score [Hitesh Sonik] is subtle where required, but electrifying when necessary. Anay Goswamy's cinematography is top notch, capturing the emotions as well as the rustic atmosphere to perfection.

The three pivotal parts, enacted effortlessly by Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav and Amit Sadh, are the heartbeats of the enterprise. Sushant is a terrific actor, is blessed with wonderful screen presence and gets the timing of his character right. I see tremendous potential in him! Rajkumar Yadav has proved his credentials in the past and shines yet again in a role that's in sharp contrast to the other two characters. He's excellent! Amit Sadh is another remarkable talent to watch out for. Sure, he too has a couple of films to his credit, but his performance in this film will make people notice him. Besides, their on-screen camaraderie is truly infectious. Amrita Puri leaves a strong impression in a movie that's an all-boys' show predominantly.

The supporting cast is equally super. Manav Kaul is magnificent, taking his character to another level. Asif Basra does a splendid job. Digvijay Deshmukh [as Ali] is a revelation. He's incredible!

On the whole, KAI PO CHE is brimming with solid content. Watch it for the spirit it is made in. Watch it because it's the kind of cinema that pushes the boundaries. Watch it because movies like KAI PO CHE need to be encouraged. A film that deserves an ovation!

Movie review: 'Kai Po Che' also plays outside the lines

The spirited Indian film about three male friends bonding through cricket also touches on some of the real-world issues taking place around them.

By Robert Abele

February 21, 2013, 5:00 p.m.

Three close male friends live through ups and downs in realizing their dream of running a sports shop/cricket academy in the Indian film "Kai Po Che" ("Brothers for Life"). Based on a bestselling novel, the film traffics in an energetic form of aspirational/redemptive melodrama that ties the friends' fortunes to real-world events in the early 2000s, such as the Gujarat earthquake.

Once business-minded Govind (Raj Kumar), impulsive cricket fanatic Ishaan (newcomer Sushant Singh Rajput), and money-connected Omi (Amit Sadh) get their modest store up and running, luck hits when a Muslim boy falls into their fold, displaying enough cricket-batting talent to be the next big thing.

While Ishaan takes Ali under his wing, Govind secretly gets romantically involved with Ishaan's younger sister, and Omi gets more deeply involved in his uncle's increasingly xenophobic politics, with tragic consequences during the notorious Hindu-Muslim riots of 2002.

"Kai Po Che" packs a lot into its two hours, with not a lot of subtlety -- and in some cases, bracing grimness. But its performances are enjoyably boisterous, and director Abhishek Kapoor refuses to linger on clichs for too long (the happy montage, the big game, unlucky coincidence) before hurling his trio into their next complication or moment of triumph.

"Kai Po Che." Not rated. 125 minutes. Playing at the Rave 18, Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino, Regal Westpark in Irvine, Naz 8 in Lakewood, and AMC Covina.

Kai Po Che

3.5 stars

Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Raj Kumar Yadav. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor. 124 minutes. Opens Feb. 22 at major theatres. PG

It's a sprawling tale of friendship during a tumultuous time of sectarian strife in India.

Based on the novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life by Chetan Bhagat, Kai Po Che also features a dizzying amount of cricket, a game that remains mystifying to North American audiences. (What, for example, is a "googly"?)

But what makes the film succeed ' and occasionally soar ' is a trio of finely etched performances by the three principal leads, a trio on the cusp of adulthood struggling to maintain the bounds of friendship as the vagaries of life and fate conspire to split them apart.

Photos View gallery

As the film opens, Omi (played by Amit Sadh) is leaving prison for an undisclosed offence. He's met by Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav). His first question is: "Where's Ishaan?"

Backtrack a decade and we see the three young men as fast friends coming together to open a sports shop and a cricket-training academy.

Ishaan (by a charismatic Sushant Singh Rajput) is a former teen cricket star and the most fiery and passionate of the three. Omi is more brooding, forced by circumstances to follow his uncle's path into politics. Govind is the brainy one, keeping the other two more or less grounded, who embarks on a secret courtship with Ishaan's sister, Vidya (a warmly engaging Amrita Puri.)

But politics ' and the implacable divisions that continue to divide Hindu and Muslim India ' gradually begins to encroach upon the halcyon days of their youth.

Director Abhishek Kapoor has assembled a very fine cast beyond the main players, among them Digvijay Deshmukh, who displays a wonderful on-screen presence as Ali, a cricket prodigy whom Ishaan takes under his wing.

The fact that Ali and his family are Muslim matters not at all to Ishaan or his friends, an object lesson in a country long divided by caste (or class) and religion.

Kapoor also demonstrates a fine cinematographic eye, showing us an India of contrasts, both sun-baked rural landscapes and chaotic urban scenes, and a fine attention to detail that lends the film an air of authenticity.

And while the film is more than two hours long, we are soon engaged and deeply invested in the fate of the characters.

Top marks to Amit Trivedi for the varied score that complements the film throughout, most often playful, but increasingly urgent as the forces of division converge towards a tragic climax.

Even audiences with little understanding of recent Indian history or the intricacies of cricket are going to find Kai Po Che a poignant and satisfying experience.
