Ronnie Screwvala arranged a special screening at Antilla two days prior to the premiere show

Even before the premiere, a private screening of Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che was organised forMukesh Ambani at Antilla this weekend. The film, shot extensively in Gujarat, highlights the entrepreneurial flair of the Gujarati clan. And this seems to be the reason behind the tycoon's keen interest in the film.
A source told TOI: "Being a Gujarati, the very title of the film 'Kai Po Che' got him hooked. He had heard a lot about the film and after seeing the promos, he expressed his desire to watch the film at the earliest." And it was hardly an issue arranging a special screening for the richest man of India. Besides, he has a great rapport with the producer of the film, Ronnie Screwvala.

A source said: "Ambani has a 20-seater mini theatre, equipped with all the latest technologies, at Antilla. The film was digitally uploaded to the system through a new technology that allows only one-time viewing."
Ambani watched the film with his wife Nita and according to sources, some of the visuals made him nostalgic about his family in Gujarat. The premiere of the film will be held at a suburban theatre today and the guest list includes Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh,Anushka Sharma, among others. Along with the Mumbai premiere, the film will also be screened in a single-screen theatre in faraway Jaipur. The screening is specially organised forAamir Khan, who is shooting PK in the pink city.

UTV's 'Kai Po Che' is based on Chetan Bhagat's 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life'. The film revolves around the strong camaraderie of three childhood friends which has always been a consistent part of Chetan's novels.

Abhishek Kapoor who had achieved success with his earlier film 'Rock on' has made the film with three unknown faces playing the lead roles. The director who is looking forward to the release of the film on Friday had admitted that he is relying on word of mouth for the success of 'Kai Po Che'.

"I am definitely relying on word of mouth for this film. This film doesn't have stars, but I am sure the content will take ahead the film," said the actor-director.

Apparently Hrithik Roshan had watched 'Kai Po Che' before its star studded premiere and had lauded the film.

"It is a fantastic film. I really hope that this film does well because such films should do well. It is a wonderfully performed film by all the actors. The performances are such that they touch your heart. They (cast) are very-very endearing. It doesn't look like it is their first film. I am very, very proud of this film, Abhishek and the entire team. I think all the actors will go very very far because they all are absolutely brilliant," the 40-year old actor stated.

Cast and Crew
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, 'Kai Po Che' has been produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur. Starring in the film are Amit Sadh, Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Yadav and Amrita Puri in pivotal roles.

Amit Trivedi has composed the music while the lyrics have been penned by Swanand Kirkire.

Synopsis
Kai Po Che is based on Chetan Bhagat's bestselling novel ''The 3 Mistakes of My Life''. The film revolves around three best friends Ishaan, Omi and Govind. 'We think of subjects in our own style'

Treena Mukherjee, Feb 20, 2013, DHNS:

Sensible Take

If there's one thing that Abhishek Kapoor is known for, it's the strong undertone of friendship in his films. His first, 'Rock On!', centred around friendship and music; his second, Kai Po Che — adapted from a novel by Chetan Bhagat — is based largely on friendship against the backdrop of Gujarat.

The film-maker says that adapting the novel into a screenplay was quite a long process. "It took us about 20 drafts. We based the story on these three characters but initially, we moved away from the book. The film was evolving into something else — new scenes came in and there is a lot in the book that we have not shown or depicted differently. We have given the author his due credit, though; it was a creative call from my team," he explains.

He is quick to add that the title of the film is actually a victory call. "It is metaphorical and suits the story. The film has elements of fun," he says. The project has been shot predominantly in Gujarat, as well as a few other places like Delhi, Pune and Ahmedabad. "The novel has a bit of the Gujarat riots and yes, we have shown it — but I have done my bit to be sensible with those scenes," he explains.

"The actors in the film may be fresh, but they are extremely professional. They did not have to be trained, as all of them know the nuances of this field. In the end, it is about team work — and everyone has put a lot of effort into making the film. There have been times when the crew had to work in soaring temperatures — such as 48 to 50 degrees — in Gujarat. Having fun in such adverse situations, when you are not enjoying the process, is difficult. But the pain was converted into fun," he adds.

The director explains that the film has Indian sensibilities and is clear about its roots. "It's an Indian film and shows the real side of the country. I tried to showcase the middle class and their problems. The characters are very reactive — there is a raw energy in them and their ambitions are high. The film has few songs and the focus is on the screenplay," he shares.

It is quite apparent that his protagonists get on with each other quite well. Abhishek reveals that the boys have bonded and that comes out in the film. He asserts that every director is different and has his or her own style. "I feel that every director treats his film in a very different manner. The previous film on a Chetan Bhagat novel was told in its own way; we think of our subjects in our own style," he concludes.

Abhishek Kapoor's Kai Po Che brings to the screen Chetan Bhagat's tale of the hopes and aspirations of middle-class India

While Hollywood is making all these super movies out of sub-continental classics — Life of Pi, Midnight's Children and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, we are not lagging behind with book adaptations. So what if our author of choice is Chetan Bhagat? After the hilarious (whenever Chatur's speech comes on telly, it is difficult not to grin) and super successful 3 Idiots based on Bhagat's Five Point Someone, comes Kai Po Che based on Bhagat's 2008 novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life.

Ahead of its February 22 release, the film directed by Abhishek Kapoor, had its premiere at the 63rd Berlinale in the Panorama section. The film, like the book tells the story of three young men growing up in Gujarat. Set against the backdrop of the 2002 riots, the film tells a charming tale of the hopes and aspirations growing up in an economy that is opening up and the seismic (both literal and figurative) shifts this kind of economic growth brings with it.

Abhishek, who wrote and directed the groovy Rock On!! spoke of the challenges of adapting Bhagat's novel. "Chetan approached me with the book. I had to decide how much to keep, how much to take out. If I was taking something out, then I had to put something in which would have an effect on the whole movie. The film is derivative but can stand independent of the book."

WORKING WITH NEW TALENT

While 3 Idiots had an A-list cast — Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor, Kai Po Che is powered by youngsters. Telly star Sushant Singh Rajput plays the live wire Ishaan, whose life revolves around cricket and his friends. Amit Sadh plays the easily influenced Omi while Raj Kumar Yadav (Gangs of Wasseypur II, Shaitan) plays Govind, the entrepreneur in the making who has big dreams. Amrita Puri plays Ishaan's sister and Govind's love interest Vidya.

"While casting I was looking for energy and innocence," Abhishek says. "Stars come with their own baggage. I did approach a few stars and they refused. I understand where they are coming from. The age bracket I was looking at, the stars are just establishing themselves and would be wary of accepting a three-hero project. I don't take it personally if stars say no. So many actors refused Rock On!! Arjun Rampal agreed to work in the film and got a National Award! So it all works out for the best."

Though both Rock On!! and Kai Po Che deal with friendship, bonding and growing up, Abhishek insists the movies come from different places. "I wrote Rock On!!. It came from me, while Kai Po Che is an adaptation. The distance between the upper class and the middle class in India is so vast, that it might as well be another country! In Rock On!!, the characters and responses were cerebral while Kai Po Che is in a more reactive space. In fact, I consider myself lucky to be able to make two films with similar themes in two very different ways."

Detailing is an important part of the film — be it the basic mobile phones of 2002, the Basic Instinctposter or even the political party symbols. "Nothing is in a frame by accident," Abhishek says. "As far as the party symbols and flags go, yes we didn't want to offend people. Kai Po Che is about friendship and people. It is not about who did what. Enough has been said, now it is time to look for some sort of healing. It is time to forgive and forget or at least move on. Ishaan is the purest character in the film. He is not preachy, his loss is emblematic of all of us losing a vital part of our self. The movie doesn't end on a sad note — rather it ends on an optimistic one, of there being hope for the future in the form of the batsman Ali. His cricket debut at the end of the film is emblematic of keeping dreams alive. This is not a Bollywood film, it is an Indian film. Politics, religion, cricket and movies — it is my interpretation of India."

Kai Po Che wins over critics and audiences at Berlin Film Festival

12dec_KaiPoChe-1stLookPosterKai Po Che, a film about cricket, love and politics set against a backdrop of sectarian violence and an earthquake, bowled over the crowd at last week's Berlin Film Festival. The film induced cheers and tears from a packed cinema on Thursday as it screened ahead of its worldwide release this week. Based on the best-selling Chetan Bhagat book The Three Mistakes of My Life, the film follows three young men as they set up a sport shop and cricket coaching academy. The film's director Abhishek Kapoor said he wanted to shy away from the traditional Bollywood formula. "I don't think it's a Bollywood film, it's an Indian film," said Kapoor.

He says he hoped the film's format, which includes TV footage from the historic 2001 India-Australia test series and features a cameo by the Indian cricket star Ajay Jadeja, would appeal to a wider audience. "The world over, people are interested in Indian film. But somehow Bollywood films don't connect with people," he said.

While the film touches on political and religious issues, ultimately it is about the bond between the leads. "This is what India is about: cricket, politics, religion and movies. But actually this film is about friendship," said Kapoor. "I think it is a very important story for India."

The Indian Premiere of the film takes place in a suburban theatre yesterday with actors Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma being among those attending. Meanwhile, the film will also be screened in a single screen theatre in Jaipur for actor, Aamir Khan, who is currently filming there.

Kai Po Che, produced by UTV Motion Pictures, releases in the UK and Worldwide on 22nd February 2012.
Stay tuned we have interviews with both Abhishek Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput as well as our review coming up soon!

Kai Po Che - An ode to friendship & brotherhood

Vishal Verma, [Tuesday, February 19, 2013]

What is it all about

UTV spot boy's 'friendship' with helmer Abhishek Kapoor recommended by Chetan Bhagat's best seller '3 Mistakes of My Life' is a picaresque portrait of India during its knock at the millennium peeped from a window of a town in Gujarat is elegantly made with a lot of heart offering a shot of wise.

Coming at a time when it's desperately needed 'Kai Po Che' is more than just friendship.. Dil Chahat Hai, Rock On, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, 3 Idiots either focused on life or how to live a life... 'Kai Po Che' powered by thought provoking emotional identifications deals with life and circumstances..

Abhishek Kapoor screen adaptation is shrewd and not at all ashamed of portraying the awfulness, beauty, promise and pain witnessed during the last decade in this story and remarkably transfigures this
youthful film from friendship in the beginning to brotherhood in the end.

The Story

Based on Chetan Bhagat's '3 Mistakes Of My Life' the screen adaptations are done by Abhishek Kapoor,Pubali Chaudhuri, Supratik Sen and the novelist himself. There are some modifications made for cinema here and the story begins with a presentation by Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav) for his sports academy.

Govind dreams of being a businessman, his two friends Sushant Singh Rajput (Ishaan) for whom cricket is everything and Omi (Amit Sadh) a priest's son and loyal friend who is ready for anything that his friends are game for. Govind sets up a sports shop along with his friends in the temple compound with Omi's family's help. What follows is a dramatic mix of cricket, religion, business, love and friendship.

The shop prospers as Ishaan coaches young boys in cricket and Govind teaches maths to Ishaan's sister Vidya (Amrita Puri). Ishaan then meets Ali, a child master with a amazing reflexes.. Ishaan sees a future
cricketer in him.. Enter Omi's Bitoo mama a political leader with reserved opinions and situations come to head leading to devastations first by earthquake and second by communal riots.

What to look out for

Abhishek Kapoor has the heart in its right place and while doing so does the rare thing, it gives us a flick which remarkably shifts from friendship in the beginning to brotherhood in the end.

Like Chetan Bhagat writings Abhishek narration is simple and flowing with an extra eye for details.Abhishek makes his audience totally engaged in the process & follow the ups and downs of these 3 Musketeers who are pawn by personal belief, greed and outside surroundings.

Sensible without getting judgmental 'Kai Po Che' is armed with some brilliant performance the debut Sushant Singh Rajput on big screen is excellent. Raj Kumar Yadav seems to be enjoying the attention thoroughly whereas Amit Sadh is very good he had a difficult part to play during the last moments and he does full justice. Amrita Puri is fine.

Hitesh Sonik background follows the mood of the film. Amit Trivedi music is fine when one is watching the film. Anay Goswami camerawork is up to mark. Deepa Bhatia editing is sharp. Productions values are excellent.

What not

Kai Po Che concentrates more on the drama and intensity having less 'feel good' moments then seen in those pure escapist bollywoodish friendship flick.. the riots scenes might be disturbing for some.

Conclusion: Kai Po Che' is an intense and sensible ode to friendship and brotherhood which comes with a shot of wise at a time when it's desperately needed.

Rating ****

Kapoor's Kite Flies High!

3/5 By MovieTalkies.com, 19 February 2013

Kai Po Che Movie Review-In Short: The lives of three friends are brought together by a common love for cricket and torn apart by politics...

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Verdict: Though the movie is based on Chetan Bhagat's best-selling novel 3 Mistakes Of My Life, Abhishek Kapoor has taken care to tweak it to make it more interesting…

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Story Plot: Nerdy Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav), impulsive Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) and the impressionable Omi (Amit Sadh) are three best friends staying in Gujarat and dreaming of opening up a sports academy.

When Ishaan chances upon a cricket prodigy, the cricket-crazy youth decides to take him under his wing and create the next legend. However, the prodigy, a young boy, is a Muslim and seeds of discord are sown between the friends when Omi's right-wing Hindu uncle Bittu (Manav Kaul) and his politics divide the city in the aftermath of the Sabarmati Express tragedy. If things are not complicated enough, Govind is having a secret affair with Ishaan's sister Vidya (Amrita Puri).

How the aforementioned events change the lives of the three friends forever forms the rest of the plot.

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Performances: Raj Kumar Yadav has proved his worth as far as the silver screen is concerned and the young man does it again. His nerdy, awkward persona is a delight to watch. As for the other two actors, Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh, who have worked on the small screen, declare that they are no less than any big screen actor, when it comes to delivering a good performance. Amrita Puri as the small-town girl, too is good enough and brings the right amount of freshness and vulnerability to her character. The rest of the cast too performs effectively.

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Direction: Like mentioned earlier, though the movie is based on best-selling novel 3 Mistakes Of My Life, director Abhishek Kapoor has taken care to not make the film too predictable for those who have read the book. Kapoor, who explored the theme of friendship against the backdrop of rock bands in Rock On!, does the same here with cricket and politics and the chemistry between the three friends is quite believable. On the flip side, the film might seem a tad long and a viewer, who is not familiar with the book, might be confused about whether Kapoor is trying to talk about friendship, caste politics or the importance of sports. However, all said and done, Kapoor has put his heart in the film and the results are there to see.

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Music: Amit Trivedi proves his genius once again with Maanjha, a sweet song that should tug at your heart-strings. The other two songs viz. Shubhaarambh and meethi boliyan too are good enough.

Kai Po Che Movie Review-Final Word: Even if you have read the book, do watch Kai Po Che for the impressive acting and the emotional quotient.

Abhishek Kapoor aces on his second run in Bollywood with a brilliant adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life'

After feeding us on a heavy diet of romance, Bollywood filmmakers are now undoing our appetite for the mushy stuff, and veering us towards bromances. It did work, in the past, what with 'Dil Chahta Hai', 'Rang De Basanti', '3 Idiots', 'Dostana' and 'Rock On!!!' all turning into blockbusters.

So, by that rule, one-hit-movie-old director Abhishek Kapoor's tale about brotherhood isn't unusually novel, considering his 'Rock On!!!' explored the same dynamics. Yet, there's something uniquely endearing and extremely poignant about 'Kai Po Che'.

And, like others in this inimitable genre, this too shall win innumerable accolades. Whether it's the captivating performances, the ambitious narrative, or poetic cinematography, 'Kai Po Che' is superior in texture and commendably subtle.

It also packs in all the ingredients of a sure-shot Bollywood success, without overplaying any one element. There's cricket, religion, politics, comedy, music, bromance and even a dash of romance.

Abhishek's adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's part-fictional, part-historical book titled 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life' is imposing no doubt, but, it's his ingenious trait to alter the end, without sacrificing its spirit, that deserves immense applause.

'Kai Po Che' delves into the life of three childhood friends as they chase their dreams in their rustic hometown of Ahmadabad at the beginning of the new millennium, only to find their ambitions derailed by terrifying earthquakes, religious intolerance and political manipulations. It plays devilish mayhem with their desires and rocks their incredibly intense bond.

Despite their varying desires ' Ishaan's a failed cricket genius, Omi's a disciplined son of a priest, and Govind's a calculated businessman ' the three are inseparable, and remain united in their pursuit of a sporting dream in the early 2000.

A depleting bank account, notwithstanding, the three are determined to stick it out and make it big with their sporting academy. They find an unlikely sponsor in Omi's politically-driven uncle, who is more keen on promoting his nephew within his party circles than in encouraging his pals' cricketing aspirations.

The boys continue to chase their dreams with gusto, with Ishaan taking the hugely-gifted Muslim boy Ali under his wing and diligently coaching him to make it in the big league.

Their plans, however, come crashing down following the earthquake on January 26, 2001, exposing cracks in their friendship over brewing religious indifferences.

Abhishek recreates the bloodied riots that erupted in 2002 in menacing frames, and zooms in on how a community gets cornered by the terrifying mob. Without taking sides or being moralistic, he merely captures the gruesome slaughter that destroyed the soul of a city.

Abhishek and Chetan join writers Pubali Chaudhuri and Suapratik Sen to create a screenplay that's both engaging and impactful.

Anay Goswamy captures the essence vividly, taking us a journey that's truly life-altering.

Even though this isn't a one-hero movie, Sushant Singh Rajput outshines his reel buddies with his mesmerizing act in his Bollywood debut. He has got oodles of charm and is a natural.

From portraying the feisty Ishaan's upheavals, to battling his inner conflicts at being unable to succeed, to wanting to set things right for Ali, Sushant paints Ishaan in vibrant shades.

Sushant's brilliance, however, doesn't take away the credit from debutant Amit Sadh and Raj Kumar Yadav, who are equally impressive. Amit's raw take on the pious Omi, who is torn between his friends and family, is enacted with matured restraint.

Even Raj Kumar, who has a few notable movie performances up his sleeve, plays out Govind with striking lan. It's his awkward romantic sojourns that are the most delightful.

Of the supporting cast, it's the meek, cricketing prodigy Ali and the aggressive politico uncle of Omi who are notable. If there's a weak link, it's Amrita Puri, who is unable to captivate us as the sms-obsessed, love-struck Vidhya.

Considering, Chetan's 'Five Point Someone' was a roaring success in Bollywood as '3 Idiots', it's only natural 'Kai Po Che' awaits a similar, befitting honour.

Although there have been many movies that celebrated friendship on-screen, it'd be a big mistake if you skipped this one.
