CHAPTER 5
It was an awesome monday and I was in my "Basic Electronics Lab" . Eventhough, I was civil department, as 1st years, we were to study all the banches. Even, mechanical, computerscience etc.
It has been two weeks ... But we, the 1st years would never forget the first two weeks in the campus. We were not allowed to sit in the stone bench of our beautiful courtyard... We were not allowed to take our seats in the canteen before the seniors came.. We were not even allowed to use the computer centre...
But now, after two weeks... Ragging has subsided. We were now able to walk along the garden... Use computers etc...
But it was not the same in our hostel. To be more clear, Soumya and me were the worst affected. I should tell you that after the hair cutting session in the hostel, Soumya would never sit alone in the room. She would not go out without me..
And our friendship PENTAGON.. (Well, we have named our group Pentagon) consisting of Soumya(her nick name was Sou), Avinash(Avi), Harman(Ham), Prem(who is still unwilling to join the group.. His nickname was the best... BB(Blackberry)) and meee(my name was HM(Heer Maan))..
I was returning from my laboratory. Soumya and Prem were in the Civil workshop..
I thought of going to the civil lab as I could meet Sridevi mam. As I entered the lab, I saw Prem arguing with Sridevi mam.
MAM: but Prem.
PREM: Mam, see.. this is going to be the case of all the freshers.
MAM: I don't know..
PREM: Mam, Heer has lost her hair. It's not that she had her hair cut, but, the thing is ragging is still existing.
MAM: But this happened two weeks before no? Still, Heer hadn't given any complaint.
PREM: yeah.. Heer will never complain.. But you should.
"What are you doing here?" I turned back and saw Harman.
"ham, what's going on here? Prem is arguing with-"
HAM: heer, come with me..
He led me to the canteen. He ordered two cold coffee..
"Ham, tell me what is goig on..?" I was curious.
HAM: Heer, liten, I know everything. I know that you both were best friends ever since you started schooling. Ans=d I know the reason for which Prem is being odd to you.
I was shocked!! Ho the hell did harman know about us?
"Ham, tell me.. why is Prem behaving like this?"
HAM: Sorry Heer, I can't tell you that.
"Why is he still caring for me?" i asked
HAM: I bet you know the answer.
Avi came to us.. Sou was with him.
AVI: Guys, are we a disturbance to you?
HAM: Where have you been?
AVI: In the office. I was like a bodyguard for her.
"Why?"
AVI: She is still afraid that seniors would rag her. Leave it, where's our blackberry?
I was about to say something,but i saw Prem entering the cabin and coming towards us.. I could see his eyes burning in anger. He came to our table, dragged a chair and joined us.
HAM: How about a cold coffee everyone?
AVI; Sure!You'll pay the bill dude...
It was time for us to join the class. The next hour was basic electronics engineering. Prem was pretty good in electronics, but i could see him absent minded. He dosen't know that I saw him arguing with Sridevi mam, and harman has asked me not to ask Prem anything.
It was Mr. Deepak Kumar's class and suddenly Sridevi mam came to our class. She told sir something and sir went outside.
MAM: Listen students, I've got a few reports that some ragging is taking place in the campus.
I looked at Prem who was eagerly listening to her.
MAM: So, I want you all to report what ever ragging practice you witness, or suffer. Don't hesitate. Hostelers, can you raise your hands??
About 60% of the class raised their hands, including Prem, Soumya, Avi and me.
MAM: From today onwards, you are not going to stay where you have been staying. As you know, there are two hostel buildings inside the campus. So all the first year girls are asked to shift to the hostel at the right side of the chapel and for first year boys, you can shift to the building which is on the west side of the hostel. All hostel facilities can be availed. And i promise, those hostel will have only 1st year students.
I could see everyone smiling as from now on, we don't need to stay where we stayed like slaves. Prem had a huge smile on his lips. I turned back to harman, who was smiling.
MAM: All of you are happy?
"Yes MAM!! Thank you" everyone cheered.
MAM: thank Prem.. Your classmate. He approached the principal.
I had the courage to tell him, thanks. For the first time in the college, he smiled at me..
