Heebie-Jeebies means extreme nervousness~~***~~Chapter 8- Heebie-JeebiesMaya Binder hated India. She hated it because of Delhi airport, she hated it because of the heat and she hated it because the people stared at her low neckline and short skirt that showed off her legs. But she had to come anyway, business was booming here and she wanted a piece of the cake. Besides her friend Heer had decided to get married here without so much of a word and that was two reasons too many to come.
Maya was Raj Binder's only child who was a moderately successful restauranteur in London. Her mother had died when she was five and Raj Binder who was an accountant by profession had used the insurance money to open his first restaurant called 'Punjabi Tadka' in London, he'd also given his daughter everything she'd ever desired and had spoiled her rotten. But Maya in spite of being spoilt, snobbish and occasionally rude was good to the people who were important to her. Heer was among such people. Maya loved her best friend. Now as she came out of the airport she had no trouble in spotting Heer, her friend was wearing a faded blue Levi with a white and blue kurti and looked like pretty, Maya knew Heer had been to the parlour the previous day and as she gave her friend a once over before hugging her she thought the trip had done her well.
Maya- darrrrllliiinnnggg congratulations! I can't believe you're getting married!
Heer- believe me, nor can I! how was the flight?
Maya- ah it would've been boring if I hadn't met this adorable stewardâŚI got his number
Heer- I don't believe you! Do you ever stop hunting?
Maya- nope! How'd you find him?
Heer- huh? I thought you found the steward!
Maya- duh! I meant the prime male specimen you're getting married to! That idiot Preet's brother with the defective gene!
Heer- Preet is not an idiot and what makes you say Prem's a prime male specimen?
Maya- his profile picture on Facebook says a lot for what's under that shirt darling! And no comments on Preet! Out with it now! How'd you find him?
Heer sighed- it's a long story! Why don't we go home and get settled before I start telling you
Maya- uh oh, that sigh doesn't sound goodâŚand yes, we should go, I hate the way these people are staring at me!
Heer- all thanks to the clothes you're wearing! Didn't you know you were coming to India?
Maya- what is wrong with these people? Have you seen the stuff Indian actress wear? What's wrong with these then?
Heer- the stuff that's okay in a movie theatre isn't okay on the streets, even those actresses have the sense to change into something more appropriate when the director says cutâŚand you can't enter my house wearing these! Do you have a pair of jeans in that luggage?
Maya- oh come on! Don't tell me your parents are that ancient!
Heer- they're not ancient, your clothes are bit too modern, change into a jeans and wear that jacket you're carrying over the blouse
Maya- what? Are you crazy! It's 30 degrees Celsius here! And where will I change?
Heer- I don't care! You can take it off when you're in the house and I'm driving so you can change in the car now come on!
Maya- what? Wait!! {and she pushed her luggage trolley to where her friend was headed thinking this was going to be one fun vacation!}
LATER AT HOME- Heer tells Maya how she ended up saying yes to Prem and the other girl was horrified! She was also sorry for Heer when she discovered what Prem was like
Maya- oh hun! What are you going to do?
Heer- I love his family, it's not that I do, but I don't think I can cope with being a part of a family straight out of hum saath saath hain and kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi! And he & I have absolutely nothing in common!
Maya- but you won't have to live with his family babe, you're coming back to London with him and you can rule the roost when you're married to him
Heer- how??
Maya- you know guys in their twenties are like molten wax waiting to be moulded into the container of your choice, all you needâŚ{she pauses and dramatically lowers her voice adding emphasis to} is a creative sculptor meaning you {and winked}
Heer has a horrified expression- you don't mean...
Maya smiles showing off her teeth- oh yes I do
Heer- eww that is gross Maya Binder! I am not going to do that!
Maya pretends she's offended- oh come on! You've been saving yourself for the man in your life and now you're saying this!
Heer- I have not!
Maya- darling, this is me you're talking to! Remember Andy?
Heer- Andy the nutcase?
Maya- ahan, your disaster date to the uni prom at Oxford? The jerk who thought it was his divine right to share your bed because he took you to a fancy dinner and then escorted you to the prom?
Heer lowered her eyes
Maya- I'm the only one who knows HeerâŚI know how you turned him downâŚand I know why you did that in spite of having a HUGGGEEEE crush on him because YOU told me! Now don't pretend otherwise
Heer replies meekly- I don't want to get married now Maya, I wanted to get to where I've always wanted to beâŚhead an international firm, then I wanted to fall in love, I wanted the guy of my dreams to sweep me off my feet and marry meâŚI saved myself for that guy! {continues angrily} not for this family ka Ram, Prem Juneja and certainly not this way!
Maya- baby, you don't have to do this if you don't want to
Heer- what do you mean?
Maya- I mean, you can leave! You're educated, independent, successfulâŚyou don't need to do this!
Heer- my parents will be disgraced! Everyone's been told! My family started distributing the cards today! What will the nosey relatives from Punjab say?
Maya- your parents will get over it! Besides, you can say you're avenging your tauji's death! You can leave a Juneja at the mandap to take revenge! All of your relatives will think the same and your parents won't be disgraced!
Heer- I don't think I could do that
Maya- I would never want you to get into something like thisâŚwhy don't you meet this Prem character? Both of you have GOT to have something in common! I mean, he's educated and successful, you're telling me his company arranged accommodation for him at the Hyatt, they don't do it for just anybody darling! So he's got to have some common groundsâŚhe moves in the same social circle at least!
Heer- I can't, he's in Dubai this week when we can meet and nobody will let us see each other when he comes backâŚ
Maya- damn these age old customs! Hey, Dubai's not too far awayâŚwe can go there
Heer- are you out of your mind! What will I tell everybody?
Maya- shopping darling! Dubai is the ultimate shoppers destination! And my uncle has a very nice flat there. He lives in Texas and only uses it occasionally when he's thereâŚwe can stay there and save on hotel costs!
Heer- I dunnoâŚI should be here for the wedding
Maya- just say yes!
Heer- what will ma say?
Maya- ma will say yes, you don't get married everyday!
Heer- you think?
Maya- I'm positive! I'll help you convince your parents!
Heer- what if he doesn't want to meet me?
Maya- he willâŚhe's gotta be blind to say no to you
Heer- he's a family guyâŚI'm sure he won't
Maya- he will darlingâŚtrust me!
Heer smiles- I trust you
Heer's request was weird as far as Teji & Balraj were concerned. Prem was Dubai and although they weren't against the idea of meeting the person you were about to marry they thought it wasn't quite appropriate to meet them unchaperoned, that too in a distant land. But Maya Binder was good at convincing peopleâŚand she convinced Heer's parents that she, Maya Binder would keep an eye on Heer. And the Maans agreed. Maya was right, it wasn't everyday that you got married and they knew Heer had been a darling and agreed for them, they owed this to their daughter.
Heer & Maya got tickets for Monday morning to Dubai and had less than 24 hours before they flew. Balraj gave Heer some money for her shopping trip and was furious when his daughter said she had the money. He told her he didn't care, he wasn't Tata or Birla, but he was well settled, he wouldn't let his daughter spend her money at the wedding, it wasn't doneâŚand so it was decided. Balraj Maan sponsored Heer's tripâŚminus the accommodation, Maya had called her uncle and he had graciously agreed to let them use the flat for a week. The neighbor had a key and the girls could get it once they got there.
Teji decided to inform the Junejas as she thought it was the right thing to do and was surprised when she learnt that Gayatri and Lalit loved the idea. Gayatri wanted the children to at least meet for lunch because she thought it was the perfect setting for romance to happenâŚshe badly wanted her son to think about himselfâŚshe wanted him to fall in love.
Two people weren't happy when they heard Heer would be gone for a weekâŚthey were Meher and Veera and their reason was childish as far as Heer was concernedâŚthey wanted to make sure Heer didn't get any outfits for the major functions before and after the wedding, they were the designers and they were going to make sure it stayed that way! They didn't rest before extracting a promise from Heer.
That night, Heer's status on Facebook
Heer Maan is going to Dubai for a week to shop for her wedding !!
45 minutes ago via Facebook for iPhoneMaya had made her put up that status, it was intended for a certain Mr. Prem Juneja who was having a casual dinner with Milind and his wife Prachi and was sipping a buck's fizz {also known as a mimosa} when he choked on itâŚ
Milind- are you okay dude?
Prachi- I'll get you some water {she leaves}
Prem- she's coming to Dubai
Milind- who? {he pauses for a second before saying} you mean Heer?
Prem- yeahâŚwhat am I going to do? {he sounds nervous and scared}
Milind laughs- what do you mean what am I going to do? Quit acting like you're a 16 year old about to go for his first dateâŚyou've dated women before
Prem angrily replies- this isn't a date man! My parents have chosen this girl for me! And after our disastrous first conversation I don't know where to treadâŚit's like I have landmines all around meâŚI can't screw upâŚshe's been chosen by my parents
Milind is irritated- will you get over the fact that she's been chosen by your parents? She's going to be your wife! And that single fact is above everything else! So will you please quit being a nervous son and start acting like a man?
Prachi- what happened?
Milind- his fiancee is coming here
Prachi- to meet you Prem?
Prem- no, her status on Facebook says it's a shopping trip
Prachi- you don't look very happy
Milind- he's an idiot! Okay he let's his parents choose a girl for him, but now Einstein is nervous because she's going to be in the same city! Pray tell me Prem, what are you going to do when you're married to her? Will your relationship be like the saint and the disciple?
Prachi- don't say that Milind! He doesn't know her, he's got to be a little apprehensive
Milind- oh come on Prachi! He should act like a man and get to know her! This guy has dated enough girls at college to know how to act like a gentleman and how to make small talkâŚget to know her dude! Meet her
Prem- I can't
Prachi raises an eyebrow- why?
Prem- she & I have nothing in commonâŚshe drinks red wine! Can't cookâŚwatches sloppy romantic movies, likes eating outâŚwatches tennis and Eastenders! And she said Dr. House is an idiot! Can you believe that?
Prachi- I don't believe you! Women like wine {she points out to her glass} see, I'm drinking wine! A lot of peopleâŚagain, mostly women, like what you boys call sloppy romantic moviesâŚalmost everybody watches tennis and so what if she and you don't watch the same soaps? Milind & I fight over the remote all the time! And we just can't back out one of us settles for the TV in the sitting room the other one goes to the bedroomâŚget two TVsâŚproblem solved! And you should eat out occasionally
Milind- toldja! He's an idiot!
Prem- she can't even cook! I learnt in the years I was abroad but I can't be expected to cook all the time!
Milind- dude, Prachi here couldn't boil and egg when we got marriedâŚand today, just two years after our marriage she made us amazing pasta and chicken! Heer will learn! Besides, you're being irrational, if you have these many problems with her then don't marry herâŚwhat's this 'I will marry her because my parents chose her but I can't meet her now because I don't like her' attitude? How exactly are you going to cope if you don't start now?
Prachi- Milind is right! You're either in or you're out. You need to decide Prem and decide quickly, you can't get into it because you feel compelled and then cry foul
Prem- I don't know, I think leaving this decision to my parents was a bad idea. I have a bad feeling about this relationshipâŚand Milind, you know my gut feelings are never wrong!
Milind- I know something else too, I know that if you don't quit acting like an idiot you'll soon have the gut the feeling that you need to speak to a good divorce lawyerâŚand then you'll mess up every single relationship in your lifeâŚremember it's too late to repent and do remember that your parents didn't choose just any girl for youâŚthey chose HeerâŚand the Maans mean the world to your familyâŚwill you be able to live with yourself if you lose your parents along the way?
Prem sighed- I know I'm being a jerkâŚbut I've never been this nervous, I feel pressurizedâŚthe stake is high and the girl being so independent, successful and different isn't helping my situation
Prachi- you mean you're scared of her success? Forget itâŚI'll tell you what, ask her to accompany you to the dinner at the Burj on Tuesday
Prem- you mean the party Milind's company is having?
Prachi- yes, there will be a lot of people there, it'll be easy for you guys to mingleâŚand we'll help, I'm sure Milind can arrange an extra pass? {she looked at her husband}
Milind- yeah, no worries dudeâŚyou just ask her to come, we'll play Cupid {he grins}
Prem- thanks guys, I appreciate the help, really do
Prachi- don't worry about it Prem, just make sure you look better than your best and act like a complete gentleman
Milind- our boy's a little rustyâŚhe stopped dating after he moved back to IndiaâŚ
Prem raised an eyebrow- are you challenging me Mr. Patel? I can still woo a girl
Milind grins- for your sake, I hope you can
