She found his red eyes staring back at her with disbelief. For a second she froze when she saw his eyes. They reflecting so many questions, so much guilt and it tore her heart.
"Why the hell are you doing this?" His voice was husky. He had a serious look on his face.
"Don't you hate me for all that I've done to you?" His eyes filled up with crystals of tears. He couldn't understand this girl. How can she care for him after what he did to her? Was she really blind in love that she was able to endure all this? His eyes searched hers' to get the answers to his question.
But what broke his heart even more was the fact that he had made her shed so many tears. And now too, she was shedding her precious tears for a worthless guy. She didn't deserve this at all.
But she decided to break the intolerable silence as well as answer his question. But she was still in tears as she spoke out in a soft voice, making sure she kept her gaze attached to his gaze.
"I try. You have no idea how much I try to hate you." She paused and she wiped away her tears. He just looked at her, his face expressing his ache in seeing her in this condition. She looked into his eyes again and continued.
"But I can't. No matter how hard I try. I can't stop myself from loving you. I know you hate me. You've always hated me. You want to get rid of me. But I though that I would be able to change you. I though that you would at least respect me in the terms of being best friends. But I was wrong. You hate me and proved that to me how much you hate me last night." She was quite disappointed in him. But then, when she looked deeply into his eyes, she could see something. Was it guilt? Was it his affection for her? Was it the same pain she was feeling?
She didn't want her hope to get high again and then break with a fierce force. She looked away from him and got up. But when she got up, her wrist was gripped by him.
He slowly got up with a determined look in his eyes. She had her back facing him. She knew that she would easily fall if she looked into his eyes. He knew that as well and he was determined to make a decision tonight.
He had to release her from such a life. He had to release her from the knot that has always tied them together. She didn't deserve all this. Yes, he never paid much attention to her. But that didn't mean that he forgot his love for his best friend. She was, is, and will ALWAYS be the girl that he would truly love. He still loves her. His love for her increases each time he looks at her. This was true love, he loved her. But he hated himself. He hated his temper which he was never able to control. He hated his fate for bringing distances between them. And above all, he hated his mother. If it wasn't for her, she would have still stayed with him and he wouldn't have done such a disaster.
But he had to leave her. He couldn't see her go through any more pain. This girl only deserved happiness. So much happiness that it gives her a new life. And this was only possible if he leaves her. Yes, he had to leave her. He just had to divorce her for her happiness.
He pulled her closer to himself and turned her around. She reluctantly did without making any eye contact. But he held onto her shoulder with her right hand and gently lifted her face with his injured hand. Just then, her eyes met his. He saw that they were still filled with painful tears.
It hurt him so much to see those eyes filled with such tears. It simply broke his heart in billions of pieces.
Her face was still stressed out. She had instantly forgotten about her own pain when she looked at his state. She freaked out to see his wounded hand. He was her life. If anything would have happened to him, she would have died a throbbing death right in front of him. These tears were tears of joy and relief to see him safe and sound.
He finally broke the silence and decided to spill the beans.
"Give me a divorce Heer. Give me a divorce." Prem was hardly able to get those words out. His voice was huskier then before but he spoke with a painful force to get the world out.
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. What the hell does he think? She looked at him stunned. Seeing her disbelief look, he cupped her face in his hands and brought her face closer to his. He strongly pleaded to her.
"It's the only way you can stay happy. You deserve all the happiness in the world. I will only give you pain. Just divorce me Heer." By now, his tears had decided to escape his eyes. He couldn't take it anymore. He let go of her face and looked down at the mangulsutra that was clinging close to her chest.
He saw her look down at the mangalsutra. Her eyes shot back at him. Her expression was beyond disbelief.
"Take it off. I don't want this relationship to cause you anymore pain." He looked at her with tearful eyes. Heer just stared at him. She couldn't believe it. Was he crazy? She thought.
His hand approached her mangalsutra in the effort to separate her from this handcuff. But she fiercely pushed his hand away. The tears started their flow down her soft cheeks. This was the limit. How dare he say something like this?
"Heer, just take the damn thing o-" but before he could finish his demand, she slapped him right across his face. With the force of the slap, his face was tilted a little side way, his eyes lowered in shame. He knew that he was disrespecting a sacred jewel.
He raises his face and looked at his wife. She was blazing in anger. Her eyes were glaring at him. For the first time, he saw her angry. He was disappointed in himself. He knew well enough that she would never agree to this. But he found no other way to free her from this hell of a life. But then he heard her speech. She sounded so frustrated.
"What the hell do you think of yourself? Jab chahe mujhe apne saath rakte ho, jab chahe mujhe apne aap se door kar dete ho. Mai kya khilona hu? Jab chahe rula diya. Jab chahe apna gussa utar diya."
She couldn't take it anymore. Her entire body felt like melted jelly. She felt her heart just bleed away and burst from the sorrow that were built in. She was crying hard.
"Har din. Har din mai koshish karti hu ke tumhe kush rak payu. Mai har baar tumhara saath nibhati hu. Tumhe who sab kuch dena chati hu jisse tumhe khushi mile. Mai jaanti hu ke tum mujhse pyar nahi karte. Lekin pata nahi kyu, mai paagalon ki tarah tumse pyar karti hu. Phir bhi tum samajna hi nahi chate. Inta bada fesla kaise le sakte ho?
It was becoming hard for her to breath. The thoughts of being away from him were killing her.
He was blown away by everything she said. Of course he loved her. How can a guy ever resist such a girl? That's why he believes that he doesn't deserve her. But as he recalled what she just said, her state broke his broken heart into uncountable pieces. He didn't want to hurt her more then he already had. But he did just that. He made her cry. He moved a little closer to her and tried to touch her shoulder to calm her down. But he was stopped by her harsh words.
"Don't you dare touch me! Mai toh tumhare liye kuch maine nahi rakti naa? Tang aa gaye ho na mujhse? Theek hai. Mai talak de dungi. Lekin kabhi yeh soocha hai ke mera kya hoga?
She glared at him with questioning eyes. He was speechless but somehow, he got the words out.
"Heer maine kabhi tumhara bura nahi chaha. Mai sirf tumhe khush dekhna chata hu."
He tried to move closer to her but she moved away instantly. Her eyes had softened and her anger and subsided. Now she only felt a loss, a severe loss of the guy she loved.
"Tum mujhe khush kaise dekho ge? Jis din yeh rishta mar jaye ga, mai bhi mar jaongi. Mai mar jaongi Prem. Mar jaongi."
She had to leave the place. If she didn't, then she would end up fainting right in front of him in depression. She took on good look at him and then left the house without uttering another word.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was stunned by this. The last few words that she said before leaving kept ringing around in his head. He couldn't believe it.
"Jis din yeh rishta mar jaye ga, mai bhi mar jaongi. Mai mar jaongi Prem. Mar jaongi."
How can a girl love someone so much? How can she love him so much?
He would never harm her in any others ways. But from now on, he would show her the
Prem that she loved, the Prem that was her best friend, and the Prem he had buried inside
himself. He would make this relationship work. He would pacify her. He would prove to
her that he does love her and that he had always loved her. He didn't care about anything
else in he world.
His temper was now gone forever. He would never cause her anymore pain. She only deserved his love and she would get it no matter what.
He decided that he had to make up to her tonight. When he heard the car's engine outside, he knew exactly where she would go. But this time, he wouldn't mind it. After all, Gayatri Maa had supported her when she needed someone the most. But he decided to freshen up.
After taking a warm shower to loosen up his mind from all the stress, he put on a primly ironed, purple and grey striped shirt as well as deep blue colored jeans. He put on some cologne and took a good look at himself in the mirror. His face was glowing because he had freshly shaved. He knew how much Heer liked it when he would shave. But he always had slight stubble so that he would be able to hide his actual features and show off a serious Prem.
But when he closer examined his face, he couldn't find the Prem that he had been for the last few years. He was only able to find Heer's best friend Prem. He was only able to find a guy, madly in love with his wife, and a guy who was repenting his mistake. The thought of Heer brought a slight smile onto his face. A smile, yes a smile! He had forgotten to smile at all. However, today he would smile. He would smile and he would show his Heer that he only belonged to her. He was hers'. He would show her the depth of his love. He would show her the Prem that she has always wanted to see in him. Her Prem!
He rushed downstairs holding onto his blazers in one hand and his car keys in the other hand. But when he opened the door, he was greeted by a fuming Gayatri Maa. The smile that was dancing on his lips dropped and a straight expression came on his face. What was she doing here? Shouldn't she be with her?
Prem moved back a little and Gayatri walked inside. The weather outside was indicating a severe storm. The fierce wind and the piercing thunder was the proof of the storm. A blazing Gayatri Maa walked closer to Prem. Prem lowered his eyes as he was ashamed of what he had done.
"Where the hell is Heer?" Her voice was demanding an answer. His eyes got glued to her face. He felt his heart stop.
"Muā¦.Mujā¦.Mujhe nahiā¦..pata" He was hardly able to get the words out of his mouth. He didn't know what to say or do.
Unable to take this arrogant son of hers', she slapped him right across the face.
"Tujme zaraa bhi sharam hai ke nahi. Woh teri biwi hai. Aur tu" She slapped him once again as she remembered her bahu crucial state. She was worried like anything for her when she didn't find her home. She came here to find his answer. But this son of hers will never change.
"Tune Heer ke saat itni gandi harkat ki? Zaraa bhi taras nahi aaya uspar. Inti maasom bachi ke saath aisi harkat? Mujhe toh saram atti hai tujhe apna beta kehte huye." Gayatri gave him a disgusted look. Prem had his eyes lowered.
"Aggar aap usske saat nahi hoti, toh mujse aisi galti kabhi nahi hoti." He murmured that to her and left the house without looking back at her. Gayatri Maa watched him leave with a heavy heart. He was right. If Heer hadn't come to meet her, Prem would have never done that. She let the tears of pain strolled down her cheeks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He walked out of his mansion in frustration. But he still couldn't breathe. Where did she go? He thought that she must have been with Gayatri Maa. But when she questioned him about Heer, fear crept up in his heart. Now where would she go?
The weather was taken a back turn. The thundering was at its height. It had started to drizzle. The wind was as flowing as if there was nothing to stop it.
He was so confused. Where did she go? Bizarre thoughts invaded his mind. All he could do was pray for her well-being. He was not ready to lose her. With a strong determination, he hustled down the road in the effort to look for her. He can't lose her! He just can't!
She had reached the tiny murti that resided on the side of the road. It was a murti of Ram and Sita that resided in a tiny home-like structure on the side of the road. She kneeled down and prayed right in front of the murti. There she silently shed her unstoppable tears.
I shouldn't have said that to him. He already feels terrible. I just added onto his pain. I proved myself as a worthless wife. But I will give him what he wants. I will divorce him if that makes him happy. I can't be so selfish. He deserves his life. And I promise to give him whatever he wants from me.
