In their one year of marriage, not once had she said or done something against him. She was always supporting him through everything, especially when his father died a few months ago. Heer was the only one who had been his utmost support. She was the one who had got him out of his depression he still remember the ominous day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He had just returned from his dad's funeral. His bauji was suffering from a long time depression since the day his wife left him.
The ride home from the funeral home was dead silent. Prem hadn't cried at all. He acted as if he was a mechanical instrument. As he drove smoothly on the road, he loosened his tie around his neck. He had already taken off his blazer, which was resting in the back seat in the car. His freshly ironed white shirt was sticking to his muscular body. His tie was loosened. He had a straight expression on his face and he seemed to be in his own world.
All she could do was watch him and pray to her God to give her husband the strength to overcome this. She wanted her best friend to always be happy. But obstacles in life always ended up giving him so much pain that it was hard for her to endure it. She looked at him, tear eyed. How was she supposed to share his pain when he himself does not want to react?
A sharp halt stopped the car in front of the huge Juneja Mansion. He picked up his coat and without saying a word, he went inside. Heer slowly followed him inside. When she came inside, she saw him go straight to his study room.
She understood him so well that she went straight into the kitchen to make him some coffee. After preparing his favorite coffee, she headed towards the study room, upstairs.
Gently pushing the door open, she stepped inside holding his coffee mug. And what she saw next broke her heart completely. She saw him standing behind his table, staring at the huge picture frame of his father. The tears in his eyes were about to fall out. Whenever she saw tears in his eyes, the tear found their way into her eyes.
He looked so broken. She made her way towards him. He sensed her presence and tried to move away but she caught a hold of his arm. Heer made her face her. His eyes were still lowered and he didn't know what to do. One moment, he wanted to run into her arms and get out all his pain. And the next moment, he wanted to slap her so hard the she would never invade his privacy again. By lastly, his love for his best friend took over and Prem kneeled down onto the ground unable to hold back his pain.
Seeing his shatter into pieces, she kneeled down in front of him and caught a hold of his face. His eyes were scarlet and his tears didn't find a stopping point. Without wasting any more time, Prem hugged her and rested his head on her chest.
She was trying her best to calm him down by stoking his hair affectionately.
He still remember how she calmed him down, how she made him over come his sorrow and how she held him close to her heart. She became his strength and his courage. That day, she proved to him that she really cared. From that day on, he had seen the love she had for him in her eyes.
Prem hated all women. But this girl had always been close to his heart. Why wouldn't she be? They were best friends in childhood. She was so innocent, so nave, so caring, so loving. She never left his side.
But what did he end up giving her. Pain? His revenge for something she might have never done? Sorrow?
As he gulped down his guilt, he settled himself on his bed. The picture frame on the side table caught his view. He gently picked it up and stared at it. It was a picture of Heer from a party he had taken her to. He always behaved like a stranger to her no matter what. But at such parties, he was able to see himself living a life with his wife.
As the memories of the past came back to his mind, he went into a deep state of thought. He couldn't feel his hand as the bruises had gotten worse. He just kept staring at her picture. His concentration was so deep that he missed to hear the knocking on the door.
Being a loyal worker for the Junejas, Mrs. Jenny had always been there. She loved Prem like her own son and she would always give him good advice when he needed it. Even though she knew Prem's hatred towards all women, she knew the reason behind it and it didn't bother her. Mrs. Jenny was a middle-aged lady who Prem respected but never opened up to.
She had been banging on his door for over an hour now. Why wasn't he opening?
A storm was on its way and she had to get home to her sick daughter. That why she needed Prem's permission to leave early tonight. But as much as she tried, Prem wasn't opening the door. Through out the day, she had heard the shattering of glass and the breaking of bottles. But she had earlier taken it if he was taking out his anger.
However, after getting no response from him, she knew something was wrong. Prem never stayed closed up in a room like this. He would always answer to her call no matter what. But today, it was something different.
Mrs. Jenny hadn't seen Heer today either. Heer was always able to handle his anger. Then where did she go today?
She walked downstairs and headed towards the hall. She picked up the phone and dialed Heer's number.
Gayatri had watched her poor bahu cry out her pain. When she saw her state this morning, she was terrified. This was the least of what she expected her son to do to his best friend.
As she watched her hold onto her son picture and cry, she definitely knew that Heer loved Prem. But she could see in her eyes the broken trust she had in him.
Her anger was reaching a level that she couldn't describe. How dare Prem do that to her? What the hell did he think when he was doing this to her? She was his best friend, his life partner. She was disgusted by her own son's actions.
Seeing the devastated state of the girl, she knew that she had to knock some sense into the guy. What the hell does he think of himself?
When she wasn't able to take the pain of seeing Heer, she left to go to her own room. She wanted to sit with Heer. Talk to her and ease her pain. She wanted to shower her motherly love to her daughter-like bahu. But right now, it was important for her to let out her pain. If she went to her, then she wouldn't open up. Heer needed her time and space.
Praying to God for the well-being of her babies, she went to her room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She knew that she couldn't stop loving him. No matter how much she tried. No once had he talked to her nicely. But he had never intended to hurt her. It was just his temper that controlled his actions. She knew that he was regretting everything he did to her. But it still hurt her to know that her own husband, her best friend, and forced himself onto her. Her love for him could never become less. It would only increase and this is what caused her to fall weak.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the jingling of her cell-phone. Heer wiped her tears and picked up her cell that had been resting besides her. Seeing the caller reading "Juneja Mansion," she froze for a second. After much debating with herself, she took a deep breath and pressed talk.
"Hello." Her voice was so weak. Her tears had temporarily stopped their flowing.
"Heer beta, its me Jenny. Beta where are you?" Asked a concerned Jenny.
"Is everything okay Mrs. Jenny?" Heer could feel the concern in her voice. The concern was scaring her.
"Actually, since this morning, Prem sir hasn't come out of his room. And through out the day, I have heard glass shatter in his room. I periodically went and knocked on his door but he didn't say anything. I just went upstairs to ask him if I could leave early as my daughter is home alone and a storm seems to be on its way. Even right now, he didn't respond. Please beta. Come home soon. I think something's really wrong." Mrs. Jenny was pleading her.
Heer was in tears by now. She knew that he would feel terribly guilty for what he did. That's just him. He never wants to act the way he does, his temper makes him act like that. But inside, he's really soft and caring.
But as she recalled the rest of what Mrs. Jenny said her heart thumped hard in her chest. Why didn't he come out yet? I hope that he's okay. Please God, I'll die if anything happens to him.
Building back her courage, she answered Mrs. Jenny.
"Don't worry Mrs. Jenny, I'm coming. And please go home immediately. Your daughter needs you." Heer said in a soft voice.
"Please come soon beta. And thanks for understanding. I hope Prem sir is okay." Saying that, she hung up. Heer ended her call and without thinking, she ran went out of the house.
As she stepped out of Gayatri Maa's house, she noticed that the storm had begun. The night was creeping in. The fierce wind was blowing away everything. With much difficulty, she made her way into her car and drove to her house.
After quickly parking the car, she ran inside the mansion. She headed straight towards her room. When she tried opening the door, she found it locked. Reaching out for the key to their room, from the tiny space above the door, she unlocked the door and threw it open. The darkness in the room wasn't helping her locate where he was. She turned to her right and flipped on the light but they weren't working. She heard the sound of the pouring rain outside and knew that the lights were out now.
Heer slowly walked to the right and reached a small cabinet. Opening the first drawer, she pulled out matches and two candles. She carefully lit them both and set the on the table. The glowing candles had spread the light all over the room and she could now see everything. She turned around to look for him. But the sight in front of her erupted a severe pain in her body.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There he was. He was sitting on the ground; his left hand, caked with scarlet colored blood, was resting lifelessly on the ground. His head was resting sideways on the bed behind him and he was holding a picture frame over his chest with the support of his right hand.
He literally ran for her life and kneeled down next to him. There was no way her tears were going to stop now.
She cupped him face in her soft hands and cried. He could tell by his face that he had cried as much as she had or maybe even more. Then her attention fell of his hand which had pieces of glass piercing his skin. She could see that a lot of blood was lost from his hand.
She got up to get a first aid box. When she returned, she carefully took out each piece of broken glass from his skin. After that were done, she cleaned his bruises with alcohol wipes. The blood had clotted itself so it wasn't bleeding anymore. Heer bandages his entire hand with a soft dressing cloth to complete the task.
He was about to go get some water for him but when she tried to get up, a strong force pulled her back down close to him.
She found his red eyes staring back at her with disbelief. For a second she froze when she saw his eyes. They reflecting so many questions, so much guilt and it tore her heart.
"Why the hell are you doing this?" His voice was husky. He had a serious look on his face.
"Don't you hate me for all that I've done to you?
