Part 2

Heer stood in the park for a few minutes not able to completely comprehend what had just happened. Had her daughter just been kidnapped? Were they asking for a ransom? Was she dreaming or was this reality? Heer was suddenly jolted back into reality when a little boy's ball collided with her legs. She looked towards his direction when the phone conversation she had only moments ago came rushing back to her mind and ears. The only thing, the only sound that truly terrified her was the crying that came from her daughter after the slap was heard. The tears that had stopped flowing had managed to escape once again.

Heer was running towards the main road to get a taxi when the shrill ring of her phone stopped her mid way.

"H...Hello? Chahat?" she asked, knowing it wouldn't be her daughter.

"Aagar aapne police ko phone kiya, toh aapki beti zinda vapas nahin aayegi," was all the voice said.

"Nahin, please usse kuch maat karna!" Heer yelled, but to no avail. The caller had already hung up by them.

Blinded by her tears and deafened by the rapid beating of her heart, Heer raced across the park until she was on the main road. Somehow she had managed to get a taxi. Now the question was, where was she to go? How as she supposed to contact Prem? How was she to get all that money to save her baby? She had no way to reach Prem. She had cut out all contact with him six years ago, she didn't know where to begin. The taxi driver called out to her once again and suddenly a thought occurred to Heer.. She has seen Prem at the family hotel, that is where he had to have been staying. She got in the taxi and ordered him to take her to the Jhuneja Hotel. As they drove, Heer prayed that at the hotel she would be able to get some information about Prem.

She couldn't go to the police - she wasn't going to take that chance. The only other option was Prem.

That taxi ride seemed like the longest taxi ride in Heer's life. It was only 15 minutes from the park to the hotel, but due to traffic that drive took over 40 minutes. However, for Heer, that drive seemed to take hours! The life of her baby was on the line and here she was sitting in traffic. She couldn't take it anymore. From where the taxi sat in traffic, the hotel could be seen and Heer was going crazy just sitting and waiting. She quickly scrambled out of the taxi and began to run toward the hotel. Behind her she could hear the taxi driver yelling for his money but Heer couldn't stop, she had to get to the hotel right away. In less than two minutes Heer stumbled into the lobby of the hotel and made a straight b-line for the front desk.

"Mujhe...mujhe..." Heer was so out of breath she couldn't even talk. "Mujeh Prem Jhuneja ki contact information chahiyeh."

The receptionist at the desk looked at Heer like she had just lost her mind. "I'm sorry Maam lekin hum sir ki personal information release nahin kaar sakte."

"Aap samajte nahin hai. It's an emergency!" Heer pleaded.

"Joh bhi ho, hum aapko koi information nahin deh sakte." The receptionist was adamant.

"Yeh meri baachi ki zindagi ki sawal hai!"

Another employee came in from the back office and stepped in."Kya baath hai Madam?"

"Main kaab se keh rahi hoon ke mujhe Prem Jhuneja ki contact information chahiyeh," Heer repeated as she wiped the tears form her face.

"I'm sorry lekin policy ki mutabik hum aapko yeh information nahin deh sakte," he said.

"Dekhiyeh, main...main...main unki paatni hoon." There, she had said it. It was six years in the making but Heer had finally said out loud that she was Prem Jhuneja's wife.

From the look on both the receptionist's face and the managers face, Heer could tell that they didn't believe her. Of course, Heer wasn't wearing her mangalsutra or sindoor which didn't help matters. But then again, those would only show that she was married, it didn't have to mean she was married to Prem.

"Please Bhai-sab! Meri baachi ko kissi ne kidnap karliya hai...please..." Heer pleaded as her silent tears were growing into loud sobs. "Please meri baachi ko bacha liji yeh. Please....please..." Heer cried as she felt her knees get weak, causing her to grab onto the counter in front of her.

Just then, almost like an answer to her prayers, she heard a familiar voice behind her.

"Heer Bhabi?" it called out.

Heer whipped around and saw a face she had not seen in six years looking back at her from down the lobby. "Preet?!" Heer said and she managed to find some energy and ran to him, nearly tripping over her sari.

"Preet! Preet, please meri madat karo. Please...please..." she cried as she stood in front of him with her hands joined together. "Main tumhare aage haat jorti hoon...usse bachalo. Please...usse bachalo..."

"Bhabi kya hua? Yeh aap kya bol rahe hai?" The confusion and worry were evident not only in Preet's eyes but his voice also, as he took Heer's hands in his. See how distraught Heer was, Preet quickly put an arm over her shoulder and pulled her into his embrace. As soon as he did that, he could feel how badly she was shaking. "Kissko bachana hai?" he asked.

"Usse bachalo, Preet. Usse bachalo! Uske bina main nahin jee paung! Main maar jaunga!" Heer said.

Preet managed to somehow drag Heer into an office off to the left of the lobby corridor, but not before dismissing everyone around him. Preet got Heer into a chair as she continued to sob.

"Bhabi kya hua? Aaap kuch bolte kyun nahin?" Preet asked, apparently to deaf ears. "Bhabi?" he called out to her and placed a hand on her shoulder.

Heer once again was jolted back to reality. She sobs subsided just for a second as she realized she was in fact looking at Preet. Immediately she fell to his feet. "Preet, usse bachalo! Main kuch bhi karungi, lekin usse bachalo! Please Preet...please..."

"Yeh aap kya kaar rahe hai Bhabi?" Preet asked as he kneeled on the floor in front of her. "Kissko bachaloon? Kya hua hai Bhabi?"

"Usse kuch gunde uthake legaye hai! Usse maar rahe hai! Aur...aur...unn logo ne kaha ke aagar maine usse 2 carore nahin diyeh toh woh usse maar denge...usse maar denge," Heer cried. "Please usse bachalo...please!"

"Kissko Bhabi? Kissko bachana hai?" Preet asked.

"Usse bachalo....please...usse bachalo..." Heer repeated.

"Kissko gunde legaye? Kissko bachana hai?" Preet asked again. "Bhabi kuch toh boliyeh. Aagar mujhe kuch paata naa ho toh main kaise madat karoon?"

"Main uske bin nahin jee sakti! Please usse bachalo...." Heer said as her voice trailed off and her tears subsided just a bit.

"Bhabi!" Preet yelled as he grabbed her shoulder and shook her. "Kissko bachana hai?"

"Chahat ko...meri Chahat ko bachalo, please," she said.

"Chahat? Chahat kaun hai?" Preet asked. It was a new name to him, he had never heard Heer or Meher, for that matter, mention that name.

Heer looked up at Preet with her red rimmed eyes - eyes that filled with tears instantly - tears that could not be held back - as she answered, "Chahat...Chahat meri beti hai?"

Instantly shock and confusion settled on Preet's face along with disbelief and awe.

"Kya?" Preet asked, "Prem Bhaia ki..." He couldn't continue as his voice trailed off.

Heer knew what question was in Preet's mind so all she could do was slightly nod her head in the positive.

Preet once again helped Heer to her feet and into a chair. There was a tray with a jug of water so he got her some. He handed her the glass but even that was too much for her to manage, her hands were shaking so badly that Preet had to guide the glass to her lips. After coaxing her to take a few sips Preet sat in the chair directly across form Heer and pulled it up close.

"Bhabi mujhe bataiyeh kya hua?" Preet asked.

"Meri Chahat ko kuch gunde utha ke legaye. Mujhe meri Chahat vapas chahiyeh!" she said as tears filled her eyes again.

"Yeh saab kaise hua?"

Heer then told Preet how she and Chahat had been taking a walk through the park after school. Chahat stopped by an ice cream vendor, and as Heer paid for the ice cream someone had grabbed Chahat. When she looked around Chahat was nowhere to be found. Heer explained about how just minutes later she had gotten a call from the kidnapper, who demanded 2 carore rupee's in exchange for Chahat.

Preet was getting angrier and more worried as Heer spoke. Finally when she finished, he got to his feet and pulled out his cell phone. "Hume abhi police ko inform karna chahiyeh."

"Nahin Preet!" Heer shot to her feet and grabbed the phone out of Preet's hand. "Hum aaisa nahin kaar sakte. Usse ne kaha hai ke aagar humne police ko involve kiya toh woh...woh Chahat ko...." Heer couldn't even finish her sentence because just the thought was killing her inside. "Unnhe toh baas paisa chahiyeh."

Preet placed his hands on her shoulders in an attempt to calm her down. "Paisoon ka intezaam main karlunga, lekin phirbhi hume police ko inform karna chahiyeh."

Suddenly they heard the sound of a phone ringing - it was coming from Heer's purse. Quickly she grabbed it and answered.

"H...Hello?" she said in a shaky voice.

"I must say Mrs. Jhuneja, aap toh bohot tez nikli. Sida aapne dewar ke paas pouch gaye, wah! Lekin ek baath mein kehdoon - Preet Jhuneja se kaam nahin chalega," the deep voice said.

"Aapko kaise...?Kya matlab?" Heer asked in confusion. From the corner of her eye she saw Preet gesture to her to put the phone call on speaker which Heer did.

"Matlab ke, hume sirf 2 carore hi nahin chahiyeh. Hume Prem Jhuneja bhi chahiyeh."

"Magar kyun? Meri baachi ko chod dijiyeh!" she pleaded.

"Aap bohot sawal karte hai, joh aapko nahin karna chahiyeh. Yaad rakiyeh, hume paisa aur Prem chahiyeh varna...." the voice trailed off and there was the sound of flesh violently meeting flesh, followed by Chahat's cries.

"Hume paisa aur Prem...dono ek saath chahiyeh!" the called said.

"Mamma!" she Chahat cried, which shocked not only Heer but Preet as well.

"Chahat! Chahat beta..." Heer yelled into the phone but was once again cut off. Heer fell to the floor crying.

That was it, Preet wasn't going to take anymore. He decided that it was time to call the police. "Bhabi, hume police ko inform karna hi hoga."

"Magar Preet..."

"Yeh gunde hote hi aaise hai, bohot batein karte hai...lekin koi action nahin lete. Aap fikar maat kijiyeh, Chahat ko kuch nahin hoga. Yeh mera vaada hai aapse." That was all Preet said just before dialing the number for the police commissioner.

Within the hour, police forces were mobilized in efforts to get Chahat back. Preet gave specific instructions that all officers involved in this case were to look like simple civilian's ' they didn't want anyone knowing that the police were involved. The police had a unit gathered in the conference room of the hotel, were they were setting up the main call center. It was equipped with the latest, state-of-the-art monitoring and tracking equipment. One thing was that all of this was kept out of the media. Preet had even gotten in touch with their bank and had arranged for 2 carore rupees to be brought to the hotel immediately.

Heer looked at the clock, and saw that it had been 4 hours already since the last time the kidnappers had contacted her. She was beside herself in grief. The time had seemed to fly by because Heer had once again relived the kidnapping when she told the details to the police. She had to go home and get a recent picture of Chahat. It was then, in passing that Heer noticed Chahat's favorite teddy bear, Toto missing from the bed. Heer didn't give a second thought to the stupid toy because that was not important at this point.

Heer looked across the room where Preet stood with his back to her - he was on the phone. Heer walked up to him and put a hand on his shoulder, causing him to turn and face her.

"Yes, thank you very much," Preet said as he ended the call.

"Woh...Prem?" Heer asked.

Preet knew exactly what Heer wanted to ask. "Prem Bhaia abhi bhi flight mein hai. Maine airline company ko message deh diya hai ke..."

"Nahin usse kuch maat kehna. Aagar usse plane mein pata chala toh woh...woh pagal hojayega ke woh kuch nahin kaar sakta."

Preet tried to fight a smile that was forcing itself on his lips. Even after all these years, even after all that had happened, she still cared about the man that broker her heart. That is why he loved and respected Heer so much. "Relax Bhabi, Bhaia ko kuch pata nahin chalega. Harman Bhai bhi hai unke saath. Maine message Harman Bhai ke liyeh choda hai. Message mein maine saab kuch unhe batadiya hai..."

"Lekin Preet..." Heer protested.

"Lekin maine yeh bhi kaha hai ke woh Prem Bhaia ko kuch nahin batayenge. Unka ek stop-over hai Los Angeles mein. Maine kaha hai ke kaise bhi hoke, Harman Bhai ko Prem Bhaia ko India vapas lana hai. Koi bhi bahana ho, lekin Chahat ki bara mein kuch nahin batayenge."

"Kya woh maan jayega? Hum dono ke beech..." Heer's words trailed off.

"Bhabi, saab tik hojayega. Prem Bhaia bhi aajayega aur aapko aapki Chahat bhi mil jayegi," he said in reassurance.

Heer sighed and turned around when she was called back by Preet.

"Bhabi aapkse ek baath pochoon?" he asked. He waited for Heer to give him a sign before he continued, which she did in the form of a slight nod. "Kya Prem Bhaia ko yeh paata hai ke woh'ke Chahat unki'" Preet didn't know how to continue.

Heer understood what he was trying to ask. "Haan, kaal raath ko woh ghaar aaye the. Thab hi usse paata chala."

"Bhaia ko paata tha ke Chahat unki beti hai, aur phir bhi woh aapko aur usse chodke chale gaye." Preet couldn't understand how that could have happened. "Prem Bhaia aab mera PB hi nahin raha," Preet said. He refused to see the logic behind how a man could walk away from his wife and child like that.

As if reading his mind, Heer put a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Main usse kaha tha chale jane ke liyeh. Maine kaha tha ke aagar woh Chahat se milne ki kosish kare, toh main Chahat ko saab kuch saach saach batadungi. Issi liyeh'issi liyeh woh chale gaye."

Heer walked away without another word but in her heart she knew that in Preet's eyes, Prem had just found a glimmer of respect ' respect that seemed lost long ago.

A few more hours had passed before they received another call from the kidnappers. Chahat had now been missing for over 24 hrs. This time, however, it was a different voice.

"Hello?" Heer answered.

"Humne kaha tha naa, police ko involve maat karo! Hindi samaj mein nahin aati kya!? Aab dekho main kya karta hoon!" That was all he had said before hanging up.

The call had been cut so fast that the police didn't have time to trace the call.

"Chahat!" Heer yelled as she fell to the floor holding on to the phone.

"Sir," someone called from behind Preet, "Airport jaane ka time hogaya hai."

Preet glanced at the clock and saw that Prem and Harman's flight was due in soon. "Haan chalo," he said. "Bhabi, kuch nahin hoga Chahat ko."

Preet began to walk away when Heer called him back. "Main bhi jaungi," she pleaded.

"Nahin Bhabi, aapko yahin pe rukna hoga. Aagar phirse call aya toh shayad police kuch kaar paye.," Preet reasoned.

Heer merely nodded her head in agreement as she quietly sat down on one of the chairs and put her head i her hands, as tears filled her eyes again. Prem's flight was supposed to come in at 10am, it was already 9am.

The police had been there around the clock since yesterday so many of then had decided to take a 10minute break to just stretch out the knots in their bodies. Of course, there was one officer who was left behind in case anything should happen. Heer didn't know when her eyes closed and she drifted off into a restless sleep, only to be awakened minutes later by a hotel employee.

"Ma'am, yeh parcel aapke liyeh aaya hai," he said, as he handed her a medium sized box.

"Mere liyeh?" Heer asked as she took it.

Quietly and carefully she opened the box in confusion. When she removed the familiar contents she let out a blood curdling scream before the damn broke again. "Chahat!" she cried as she read the attached note.

Not thinking of anything or anyone, Heer grabbed the contents of the box and ran out of the hotel before any police could get to her. She had to get to the airport, she had to get to Preet. She prayed to God to keep Chahat safe, she prayed with all her heart and soul that her daughter would be ok. As she ran down the street one of the police jeeps caught up with her and took her to the airport.

Once they were there Heer didn't wait for anyone, she got out and began running towards the arrivals terminal. Once inside she franticly looked for Preet but couldn't spot him. Then as the crowd cleared she saw him talking to an airline official and police officer.

"Preet!" she yelled as she ran towards him.

Preet turned to see a terrified Heer running toward him with what looked like a teddy bear clutched in her arms.

"Bhabhi? Aap yahaan pe kaar rahe hai?" he asked in confusion.

"Yeh...yeh..." Heer was stuttering and couldn't get words out.

Preet took the stuffed animal from her and inspected it. What he saw made his blood run cold. The thing was indeed a stuffed animal, presumably a bear. Only, the head of the bear had clearly been torn off and had, what looked like blood smeared along the neck. He saw that there was a little note pinned to the stomach of the toy.

"Humne kaha tha...NO POLICE. Aaap hai ke baath maante hi nahin hai! Aapko lagta hoga ke hume kuch paata nahin chalega. Ya phir aapko shayad lagta hai ke hum baath ke paake nahin hai. Here is your proof. Aapki Chahat abhi bhi zinda hai. Lekin, aagar phirse humare plan ki khilaf kuch bhi karne ki kosish ki..toh aapko aapki beti nahin, uski lash milegi. Deliver 2 carore and Prem Jhuneja if you want to see your precious Chahat alive!"

Preet looked on in horror and disbelief. Could this really be the blood of a 5 year old girl? Of his niece? No! No, it just couldn't be.

"Preet, yeh Chahat ki favorite toy hai. Ghaar se..." Heer's voice trailed off as she remembered how Toto had been missing. Not being able to stand any more as her knees buckled beneath her, Heer began to fall only to be caught my Preet. "Chahat...meri Chahat..." she cried.

Preet held Heer as she cried and as they waited for Prem and Harman to come. Prem was the only one left who could save Chahat.

-------------

Prem was beyond angry and confused by the time his flight landed in India, again! It was ridiculous. He had had his final words with Heer. He had walked away from her and their daughter with hopes that regardless of his mistakes, somehow they would move on and be happy. He had made himself accept that the fact that one he returned to Canada he would be living a solitary life once again - he was ok with that. When they stopped in LA for a 6 hour stop-over Harman had suddenly announced that they were heading back to India. Something to do with signatures of all three Jhuneja brothers before the contract of a new hotel could proceed. Prem found it highly odd considering that each brother were equal part owner, no one more and no one less.

They had exited their flight, gone through security and all of that. They were on their way to baggage claim when Prem noticed an unusual police presence. He calked it up to some celebrity or politician who was in the terminal at the time. He saw four police men gathered around one person in particular about 300 feet away. Prem did a double take when he saw that they were gathered around Preet and a woman in a pale yellow sari. Even from the back the woman looked fragile.

"Prem Bhaia," Preet said in a barely audible whisper, which was enough for Heer.

She turned her face and saw Prem standing at a distance. "Prem," she said in a quivering voice. As soon as she saw him, her eyes filled with tears and she ran towards him. Heer knew that regardless of what happened between the two of them, despite the fact that Prem didn't know Chahat - he still loved them. She needed to feel safe, she needed to feel like everything would be ok, and the only place she could get that...the only person who could give her that was Prem.

Prem thought seeing Preet was a shock, when the woman in yellow turned to face him he was knocked breathless - it was Heer. Heer was here at the airport, crying. She looked tortured and in pain - she looked heart broken. Before Prem could think anything further he found Heer in his arms holding onto him tight with one hand and a teddy bear in the other. To say he was lost and confused would be an understatement.

"H...Heer!? Kya hua? Tum aaise kyun roh rahe ho? Aure itne sare police? Kya hua?" Prem asked.

"Chahat...Chahat..." That was the only thing Heer could say.

Prem held onto Heer but looked at Harman and Preet, both of whom couldn't meet eyes with his. "Preet kya hua?" he asked, but got no response. "Harman?" still nothing. "Koi mujhe batayega ke kya hua? Heer...aaise?" Even Prem was at a loss for words.

"Mujhe Chahat vapas chahiyeh...mujhe Chahat vapas chahiyeh!" Heer said.

Not getting any response Prem took the toy from Heer's hand and was shocked at the brutality played out on it.

"Yeh kya hai?" he asked.

"Ch...Chahat ki toy," Preet answered, not being able to go further.

"Chahat ko kuch gundo ne kidnap karliya hai," Harman offered.

"Woh log 2 carore mang rahe hai...aur...issi liyeh aap vapas India aaye hai," Preet said.

"Kya?" Prem was getting more and more confused as the seconds passed. Some child was kidnapped and that is why Prem was brought back to India. Who was this child and what relation did she have to Heer. And above all else, what exactly was he supposed to do. Heer had made it perfectly clear she didn't want anything to do with him and yet here she was clinging to him as if her life depended on it. "Lekin...yeh Chahat kaun hai?" Prem asked.

No one said anything. Preet and Harman didn't have the guts or the heart to tell their older brother that his child had been kidnapped and possibly physically harmed. They couldn't...they just couldn't.

"Chahat," Heer repeated, "Humari Chahat Prem...humari Chahat."

Heer once again broke into sobs and realization dawned on Prem - his daughter's name was Chahat. Just like they had picked out years ago.

"Humari Chahat? Meri Chahat?" Prem said under his breath.

Suddenly his blood turned to ice as he looked at the bloody, headless teddy bear again.

*mutters to herself* Fine, maybe Preet has an accomplice? *looking hopeful*

But this was an intense part, so much happened, and Preet is so sweet in this part! That parcel part was SICK! Oh my gosh, sick. I can't think straight right now, and than on top of that, Prem coming back - gosh, loved how he found out! I really hope he doesn't ask too many questions and just listens! :)

Good luck on midterms!
