Wow! I came to this forum after so many months!

hey!!! i haven't seen you here (ie, the bt,lts! 😆) for such a long time!!! welcome back! ready for a roller-coaster ride with the show? 😆

It's a bit uncanny that we share the first three love stories! They are truly great! Actually I'm surprised by 'wuthering heights'! As very few people love this story! But the madness, craziness, despair, depth everything about love can be found in this story! The other two, twelfth night and beauty and the beast are really sunny stories. I can't tell you how many times I have watched B and B. I too love the Beast but only in the cartoon form!!!

wow! it's cool that we share this. actually, it surprises me more that you like ''12th night''. lots of people think of catherine and healthcliffe as the ultimate doomed lovers, i thought. there is just no denying the madness of their love, no? they deliberately choose lives to destroy themselves and the other. and both of them stand back and watch the outcomes of those deliberate action. actually, it's a nice compare-and-contrast with prem and heer, no? c&h are soooo not the way to want to go with live - while p&h is something that we may secretly actually want? 😆

which non-cartoon beast have you seen? i've seen a
really old french version and a really old (slightly cheesy) english version -- and actually ended up loving the beast in those as well. although -- to concur with you -- no where as much as i loved the disney beast... 😍
The other powerful love-story is Pride and Prejudice. Just loved the characters Elizabeth and Darcy. Actually they are my all time favorites. I can just read that book 100th time!

i like p&p too... but no where as much as wuthering... or jane-eyre! jane-eyre's mr. rochester sooo owned my heart (before prem and his heer came along... 😆)

ya, me too. but really? not even one other fav in the love-story set? or is this just the effect of epe/ephe -- it has wiped the memory of all other love stories from your head?? 😆 it tends to do that to me...

This is awesome, E! I love your list...

I'm still getting through Wuthering Heights, but I think Catherine and Heathcliff are a very...interesting, to put it mildly...couple. The destructive love thing...I think that's pretty true about them.
Viola and Orsino?! Really?! 🤣 I'm sorry, I just think the relationships in Twelfth Night are weird. Analysing it for Lit in 9th grade made me realise how easily they transferred their affections from one to another, and is that really one of the greatest love stories? I'd actually probably go for Desdemona and Othello. Desdemona was totally in love with Othello (she was probably living vicariously through him), even when Othello doubted her fidelity and called her a strumpet and stuff. (Oh, wait, the strumpet thing was in Midsummer's...Was it?! My Shakespeare's bad. 🤢😆) Kinda like Prem-Heer, wouldn't you say? Except that instead of killing Desdemona...
Prem-Heer are pretty awesome. Their eternal love thingie is just amazing. But I like Meet too. The way they went from friends to more than that...That's something I'm in love with, the idea of progressing from friends to lovers.
OOOH! Landon and...um...what's her name...Jamie! Yes! Landon and Jamie from A Walk To Remember! Oh, man, they were just so amazing. A Walk to Remember is a book that I go to whenever I feel depressed or like I'm just giving up on love, and that's because the love that they had for each other was just superb. It's like, two entirely opposite characters, one who tells him not to fall in love with her while guessing that he will, and then he falls head over heels for her and gets married to her because that was her one wish before she died, and after that he never loved someone else again...Oh, to have a man like Landon!
I can't quite think of anymore, but when I do, I shall let you know. 😃
Love,
Bhav (:

nice list..but lady mcbeth? i didnt really find their love story that great..well, maybe i guess i can go back and read it..it has been a long time since i read that book..

hey lovely lady. 😆 ya, macbeth's lady is a strange twist, no? i just explained it to bee -- in the middle of all that blood and gore, you just can't miss the fact that macbeth and the lady stick with each other -- through thick and thin. and i thought there was a strange kind of depth in that story. or maybe it's just a twist in my brain -- either way, that's where it is, i guess. 😆

and viola..i guess there love story was nice..but it was a romantic comedy..i found it funny more than "deep"

oh, viola and her duke, i totally loved. i loved how the duke ''felt'' his love through the page's male garb -- and in those days, it was even more difficult, no? and on top of that, she is fighting the social ''correctness'' of her ''station'' and what he ''ought to be'' getting as a wife. and the rightness of her brother landing up to be there for the lady. and ... i guess it made a dent in my memory. 'cause i do so love 'em.

if i think of other shakespeare comedies, the other loveable pair were... beatrice and benedick? i'd have include portia and her swain -- but i never understood why a brilliant portia ever wanted a silly guy like bassanio. he didn't even recognise her, darnit!

and westly and buttercup, yea, that was an awesome movie..and their love story was sweet..

oooh!, you know buttercup and westly!!! they were awesome! 😍😍😍 with the cliffs of insanity, the fire swamp, the r.o.u.s.s. 😆, the pit of despair, and love that comes back from the almost-death... *sigh!* it just can't get any better!!! er... well, till prem and heer happened. 😃

also, belle and beast was the BEST love story ever..she loved a beast..that has never happened in love stories before..

😍 well, metaphorically not, i guess. in a way, darcy of p&p was also ... a (metaphorical) beast to elizabeth and her family, no? i always thought p&p was a metaphorical cousin of beauty&the beast... 😃

anyways, heathcliff..i've never read the book, but i guess i should..

ya. it's a difficult book to get through, imho. not as light and sunny as the jane-austen set. part of the attraction of the book was that it was written by a girl who was the daughter of a pastor. all she knew of life was the dark lonely life of a scottish? pastor who lived with his family in the middle of the moors... she knew nothing else! and yet.. charlotte bronte ended up writing this book about mad, passionate love between a man and a woman. totally insane, man... *shaking head at the wonder of it all.*
anyways, i actually think mr. darcy's and lizzie love story was pretty good..i mean, it kinda had a twist..he would insult her, but yet he loved her..i found that very interesting..and she didnt like him at all either..but later, she also fell in love with him..

well, see my comment above -- i liked it. but not as one of the most unusual, intriguing convincing ones. there was (i guess) a little too much of a sense of people living in tight-laced society that kinda irked me. give me beauty and the beast instead, i'd say. 😆

salim and anarkali...i havent seen the movie but i have heard so much about this..so yea..cant say much cause i havent seen the movie..btw, is this story real?

i don't think it's possible to actually figure if the story is totally real as the movie showed it, of course. but i'd figure there must've been a figment of truth in there somewhere, no? that there was a courtesan for whom the crown prince even dared to go to war against his father? the rest of the dialogue, the exact sequence of what happened when must've been put together out of thin air -- fiction as it were. but... you see madhubala and you figure -- man, this is sooo possible. 😆

anyways, i dont know much about star wars and the maitrix so i wont comment on them..

ya well. 😆 i guess you may need to have been surrounded by sci-fic all your life to instantly vibe with these two. but seriously, star wars is really just a very slick, high-tech version of a hindi movie story... lost children, son and father meeting after many years, clashes, but finally falling into each other's arms, and around it love stories and funny guys. 😆 then i guess, the basic format of popular stories never quite change, no?

matrix, otoh -- a seriously cool movie on a seriously cool premise! what really makes your eyes roll at the end is that -- as always -- the universe gets saved 'cause of ... luuvvv!!! 🤣 and you realise ''some things never change!'' 🤣

and prem and heer..well, we all know that their love story is AWESOME!!

yup! i never thought i'd say this of a hindi tv-serial. but they are seriously awesome -- in a fundamental love story way. 👍🏼

My fav is premeer simply because on visual medium I haven"t seen anything quite like them ... But its also true I at time feel cheated by the story ... I strongly believe that ppl who created premeer themselves dunno what they created in them... But none theless I haven't seen the passion these two have any where else.

Another of my fav is that of drm ahmer and drm zoya from a serial dhoop kinarey ... I was a kid when the serial was aired but it intrigued me ... A young chulbuli doctor falling in love with a 34-35 year old boss who meant business made for a great watch, nit to mention the guy playing ahmer had that manly husky voice that I am a sucker for, I guess ever since I was a kid
Edit add: just to make it clear i was never into romance really i always loved action stuff more until my eyes fell on Premeer so for me no one can be better than them anyways 😆

😆 soaps, that's quite a discussion killer -- stop calling yourself an idiot, wouldja?

imho, it was an unusual love story -- 'specially for it's times. the other (hindi movie) love stories that i remember from mom's set of those times were ... uh ... bobby? (different classes socially, lotsa opposition, boy-girl-run-away, family chase 'em, big fight, and then some villain comes in against boy's daddy or girl's daddy. the girl/boy helps to fight villain, all is forgiven, marriage. 😆)

so when raj persuaded simran not to run that was stunning, i think.

i was also stunned to see a guy like raj (short, dark, big nose, but overflowing with charisma) being the hero to a girl like simran (short, dark, little nose, and overflowing with charisma). i thought it was incredible that neither of them were the proto-typical hindi-movie her and heroine.

oh well. but that's just the pov that mom gave me when i first saw it. me? i think i just flipped for the amazing charisma of raj and simran -- and their superlative chemistry. i have rarely seen a pair with that kind of chemistry.

kinda like prem and heer... so, go figure. 😆

E, would you believe I have never read Wuthering Heights? I should go and read that now. And I have never seen Princess Brides. Should watch that too.

woah! no! i never figured you'd not have read wuthering-heights! i must warn you though -- it's a tough read. but then, you've read lotr? (lord of the rings) kinda like that -- only a lot darker, i guess.

and ooooh! i think you will soooo like princess bride! see the movie first. and then get the book. both are charming. to death! seriously! 😃

Oh, Han Solo and Princess Leia are most definitely on my list. *grin*

er... really? *looking around, whistling
nonchalantly and trying to hide my grin...*

I would add Anakin and Padme, though I didn't quite like Episode 2, the book was better. Whoever wrote it delved into the mindless scenes and added depth, so that would go on the list. I mean, he went all dark-side for her. I loved the fact that he loved her so much, he would sell his soul for her. Of course, he ended up killing her, but still.

*sigh* s'how, i've always been against this whole i'm-gonna-get-suckered-into-the-dark-side 'cause of love theme. that includes stories where people kill 'emselves for love. which is why when i read romeo&juliet, i seriously wanted to grab their two heads and knock 'em together! death is sooooo darned final! which is probably why othello made me angry. what was the use of being such a powerful dude, winning wars and everything, if some sharp meanie can get the better of you using ''luv''? same thing for anakin -- particularly since padme was such a strong character all through (unlike desdemona who started strong and then suddenly went all limp in front of othello!)

which is why i soooo loved the prem-heer shouting match before their (stooooopid, inexplicable! 😡) split. prem roared into heer's face and she just roared right back! i am sure that if prem tried to pull an othello on her, heer would've basically torn his hands off her neck, slapped him and asked him what the heck he was doing, he idiot! and i think padme was like that -- as strong as heer - and prem! but unlike prem (who was just idiotic enough to not know how to check whether he hadsexwithagirl or not) mr. skywalker just had to go whole hog to the darkside, didn't he?? that would've been like prem going to ... ratpal and getting him to get some ministers to pull ig-idiot out of his ambala posting? 😆

I know, technically, Elizabeth and Darcy are not the 'greatest' of love stories, but after doing that for Lit last year, I love them too. They're realistic in a way, and the intensity of Darcy's feelings for her, always gets me swooning. I loved the book more than either of the versions that were filmed. I guess words hold closer to me than pictures. Heh.

😆 i think they're ... okay. 😆 i had a p&p as a metaphor for beauty&the-beast thing written above -- what d'you think of the analogy? if you agree, then perhaps you'll agree that in the list if i have b&tb, then p&p comes a farrr-away second? i dunno -- that's what i feel... *omg! just checked the clock and it's 4am!! no wonder pcp's snoring on the sofa behind me!!!*

Another fictional couple I loved, in the bookverse anyways, though Viggo and Liv looked amazing together, would be Arwen and Aragorn. I don't precisely know why I love them so much, but I do. They were ready to sacrifice everything for each other. I loved that she gave up immortality for him. It was utterly romantic, in the book. The movie was more cheesy.

y'know? i'm a little religious 'bout lotr -- i refused to see the movie. 😆 i love the books so much! and of all the characters in the book, i love aragorn. for me, aragon is soooo wedded to his past, and his duties that i just couldn't take his love story seriously. aragon was... king! king, i tell you. husband/lover/whatever was just sooooooo low priority, it was not funny.

to a certain extent, that was why i don't have either merlin or arthur in this list -- their roles, what they are, define soooo much of who they are, that what they do is all too secondary to give much importance to! *dunno if you like the merlin-king-arthur stories. if you do, have you read the mary stewart books? they are awesome! crystal cave, hollow hills, last enchantment, and a (weak) wicked days*

Just watched DDLJ, and what I loved most was that Raj did not want to just run away with Simran, he wanted her family to be okay with it. That was my favourite thing about that love story.

and imho, quite unique no? or perhaps everyone is doing it these days?

Never managed to finish the Matrix, always got sidetracked, and my sister hates those types of movies. Erm, lesse, what else is there that I think is splendid. Besides PremHeer, that one is obvious.

*exasperated muh* one night, put your sister to sleep early and then tuck down with a pair of headphones and just see it! i've been hearing that line too often now! *more exasperated muh thing* 😆

Disney stories always annoyed me after a period of time, almost all of them had the girl being so helpless and having to be rescued by a man. *frowns* I hated it.

have you seen beauty and the beast?? belle rocks!

How would you react if I added Sophie and Howl from Howl's Moving Castle to the list? I loved the book. I mean, she was transformed into this old hag, and still they managed to fall in love, despite her thinking he was a murderer and whatnot. It was just so utterly unbelievable. I loved it.

never read this -- what should i be looking out for?

Like the Chalet School series, which is so old, my mother used to read them as a child. Jem and Madge were a cute couple, though Joey and Jack were cooler I think. No wonder their kids were crazy. But I digress. These are not the 'greatest love stories', not from these other books.

gosh, never seen 'em. will i find 'em if i look for 'em in bookstores today? or should i just work on libraries?

btw, one of pcp's mom's favourite childhood love stories (and she's got three editions of the book in the library here!) was ''daddy long legs'' -- which i read this afternoon. it was ... cute. i mean, cute in a way that kinda touches your heart. more of the social differences between boy and girl thing. coupled with age. and some undesired gratitude things... and well, veerrrry cute! 😆 read it! and as i wrapped up on it, i wondered -- would it actually work to have hc and ag playing the main roles in this book? hmmmm.... 😍

But the first few I mentioned, all personal favs. And you'll notice I love books. Like so much. If books were a guy, I'd marry it. And that is disturbing.

i'm not getting married to a book. i'm gonna spend my whole life earning money so that i can spend my whole retirement with a whole library full of 'em! 😆 oooh, and also money to hire a superlative cook (like pcp's mom) who can make me pistachio ice-cream whenever i want...
😍

er... is that even more disturbing? or less?

btw, didn't you mention once upon-a-long-time-ago-when-we-first-met that you wanted to marry a guy who could talk like prem, walk like prem, look like prem, look at you like prem? didn't we actually once write out a scenario of you giving instructions to your harried mom when she tries to find a groom for her daughter-the-bride? 🤣 or do i have the wrong andhara13? 😆
