Thanks to Misty And Payal for the wonderful Write up provided below about the Scene!
The confession scene was perhaps, by far the most unmatched scene (well, 18th June is also an umatched scene and I would hold both of them together in the same light) so far in the history of all shows of Balaji Telefilms. The scene had taken our breaths away, not only because of the great acting but also because the actors were supported by a brilliant script, excellent direction and dialogues and excellent works of the camera.
The most remarkable aspect about the scene was the silent, unspoken passion and an innocent love and chemistry that was ignited and brilliantly portrayed. The scene till today, remains one of the most loved scene not only because of the expression but because of the magic and innocence, that was weaved through simplicity - which can not be penned down in words because, mere words will never be able to do justice to the magic and charm that was once surrounding Kis Desh.
The range of emotions from Harshad & Additi were unparallel as were the voice modulations and the shift in expressions, something that had taken our breaths away as it was a never seen before kinda scenario.
Prem and Heer were always meant for each other and here, they both knew that the other was the one, they were looking for....searching for all their life. While Heer, knew of Prem and his existence, Prem didn't and perhaps that's why he was not able to comprehend the connection and the attachment he felt towards her. He couldn't quoet understand the magnetic pull that drew him closer to her each time he saw her or then when she was not around. Heer on the other hand, was caught fighting a battle within herself. A battle, where she was hiding her identity and existence from the one she was meant to be with and on the other was caught in a predicament of sorts.
You can say, she was slightly hurt with the fact that Lalit had forgotten about his "vaada" and was miffed with the fact that Prem had agreed to marry her cousin, but she took this within her stride perhaps thinking and realizing that if it's meant to be, it will be. She relied her faith and believed in God, knowing that God will send the one meant for her. One can safely say, that her faith was shattered and she was let down badly and hence needed a re assurance and she needed this re assurance from Prem.
While Prem was mesmerized by Heer's innocence and the pain in her eyes, Heer on the other hand was confused and fighting her feelings within herself. Here, was a man, whom she was supposed to get married to but for reasons unknown to her was getting married to her cousin.
Such was Prem's passion... his junooon towards his love for heer that he couldn't bear to see her in pain or in trouble. He too was confused on his feelings and was weighted down heavily by a "vaada" he had promised to his heart....but was caught in the tussle of the heart and the mind.
So Heer found it only appropriate to talk to him to know why - why would be a man who is getting married to another woman be so interested in her. While her heart, knew this was Prem and he was doing it for her, her head was telling her otherwise, so for me, probably she needed the reassurance and faith, that he was in love with her as much as she was in love with him.
Caught in predicaments of sorts, she decides to talk to Prem, in the only way she can. She knows, her heart tells her that she has to drive to open up or to confess and that's the only he can talk/open up. She knows/knew and that's a faith that she has from within, that Prem has to driven to say things...to say that he loves her....she knows she has to drive prem to extremes for him to confess ....she knows she has to drive prem to extremes for him to confess and say the words, she has for long heard to say, so she behaves and acts in the only way she can ... relying on her faith, her love and her helplessness.
The start of the confession saw Prem is in full detective mode and learning about a woman who could be with Manmeet and wants to warn Heer about the same. So there was a rather concerned Prem trying to tell Heer about the supposed dubious nature of Manmeet and trying to put his point across to Heer. On the other than we had Heer, who was stubborn in thinking what she, though was right and wrong! Here was one way, where the one-ess was kept intact ....the two were so stubborn in thinking about what they presumed to be right and sticking up for that right with all the convincion because they believed it to be true. So desperate, were they in trying to put their points across and making an attempt to hide their feelings and emotions from each other, that they both had to drive each other to extremes to get each other to listen to them.
The beauty of Prem's and Heer's relationship has always been that it's their heart which has done the talking and here too, it has been the unspoken words that has done the talking. Even here, after confessing and wiping the tears, it was the unspoken words, that was said, that the two were so madly in love with each other that they would go to any extremes to live that "love" ... that they would do anything for each others happiness even if it meant foresaking their own happiness.
This scene shed light on a completely different persona on Prem & Heer. Here was Prem, who keeps his feelings towards him, who is weighted by the responsibilities that he has towards his feelings has poured his passion, concern and frustration to Heer ' some one who the world considers as a mre stranger to him, but for him, is a part of him and inseparable for him. His eyes, his heart, his soul tell him that. This was one such rishta which didn't have a name, but for him existed. He didn't know what to name this connection, but it was there. "Naadan hai woh kehte hai jo mere liye tum ho gair"- that sums up the connection that Prem and Heer have always shared. The world doesn't know it, they didn't admit it, but they just knew the same. She was who Prem had been searching for all his life and he was what she had been searching for.
Prem tries hard to cloak his love under his words, all throughout telling Heer that all he wants is her happiness. It's a strange feeling to be talking to the love of your life and convince her as well as yourself that you'll be happy seeing her with someone else. It's another thing that he fails miserably to convince her or himself. His seething eyes when he let it spill that he can't see his love with someone else and that it won't give you any happiness, were so captivating that we have never seen anything like this on screen before. His eyes are magical; they were made for passionate performances; they dictate all the audience's heartbeats.
Prem's rage at his own helplessness to not be able to unveil his love in front of Heer was commendable. Prem tried hard to keep truth under wraps but love gave in; it had to, when has Prem's heart not bowed down in front of Heer? There was nothing different this time. Heer's urges for explanations- explanations for why he gifted her the dress, explanations for why he was intruding in her life, explanations for her own dilemma of not understanding the bond she shared with him- they were all hounding on Prem with Heer's each tug on his suit.
What probably had us rooting in excitement was not because Prem confessed but because here we saw a Man who had a spine, who had guts' who was willing to sacrifice his love but was not willing to let anything happen to the girl he loved, he was willing to be hurt and compromise on his situation but was not willing to compromise on the self respect of the girl he loved....because he considered Heer to be him....because he started to hold her in high respect.... because he worshipped her....but little did we know, we were just going to get blown away even more. The most amazing thing about the acting shown to us is the shifts in emotions. Prem's piercing rage and frustration were in stark contrast to his soft, warm revelations of the depths of his love and you coupled them flawlessly. With an effortless conviction, Harshad shifted back and forth his emotions, taking the audience on a swinging ride with him every step of the way. Heartbeats rose, heartbeats fell as he voiced out as much as he could possibly put into words about Prem's love. Additi was equally remarkable, when she let the eyes, do the talking. The way, Heer holds Prems face more in relief was remarkable, where just by holding her face, she tells him that she too feels the same way but is helpless about the situation, the circumstances. There was a certain innocence and aura surrounding the emotion and the scene which captivated us, the audience.
I dont know how to term this love... It is a passionate, pure, simple and innocent love - where you are willing to do anything for the one you love...I wouldn't call it utter madness but I would call purity and honesty to the core... I would say, this is what love is all about. This is the kind of love, one has always dream of experiencing. This is the kind of love, you have always imagined and longed for.
Harshad's voice modulation should get its own commendation. We are complete novices at voice modulation but we can imagine it's difficult to achieve the perfection with which he delivered his dialogues. The highs and lows of your voice matching so perfectly to each and every emotion at exactly the right time is unparalleled. Inches away from the love of your life, helpless at not being able to stop her from marrying someone else, but confident that he could never let her ruin her life, his monologue was marked by the famous "main bhagwaan nahi hoon" assertion. (where he too realized that he was a human and he too could err and he too could love, have feelings). In retrospect, there was nothing extraordinary about that line except for the perfection that he instilled in it.
His ever-so-graceful-yet-manly hands in her hands, eyes filled with a love never seen before, he lit the screen up with each subsequent exclamation about Prem's painstaking awareness about all that he feels for Heer and all that he is likely going to lose. Admissions about seeing his love happy are given by many people, but Prem made the audience believe in it all- the love, the pain, the tragedy of knowing you're not going to get the bliss of someone you hold most dear to your heart. The childlike innocence with which HC/Prem defined true love was refreshing.
The way he continually kept referencing to Heer's happiness that he holds above anything in the world were poignant. "Agar tumhari aankhon se ek aansoon nikhla, ek bhi aansoon, to mein is duniya ko aag laga dunga"- We distinctly remember this dialogue for the simple reason that Prem's well known for his many references to fire- We think Prem's the only pyromaniac actor who's used so many fire references, from "aag laga dunga" to the later "mandap jala dunga" and "jala ke raakh kar dunga sab kuch" in the later wedding episodes. We personally find these references cute and amusing. Putting aside your words, the silent language that Harshad and Additi shared was and is always refreshing to watch. Even as Heer withdrew away from Prem, it was Prem's immediate knowing look that Heer saw his ring that was really endearing.
These might all seem like trivial things that we notice, but these trivial things add luminosity and reality to a character and we hope we always get to see them. Harshad showed misery very convincingly- perhaps, that's why Prem and Heer turning away from each other was so much more heartbreaking to watch. It's always a mystery how he manages to show misery so perfectly, how he face manages to turn cherry red when he cries a lot, or how he left us wondering at what exactly enables him to bring out tragic emotions without effort .
The characters of Prem and Heer have epitomized the most undemanding, pure love that few are capable of perfecting on screen. It was the simplest, primitive affection that was portrayed, with two people just nudging each other's faces, but that in itself said it all. Nothing else was necessary. That was true honesty and warmth that the audience fell in love with. We can't help but think that the dialogues might have sounded cheesy or fake if it was any other actor; but Harshad instilled the credence needed in that performance. The impact of Prem's "mein bhagwaan nahi hoon" attitude, while he still attempts to be nothing less than divine for his love, has literally led to a large audience rechristening you with the name "The Prem." A large facet of the Indian global community most likely wishes for a similar ideal Prem in their lives too; He has enthralled them so much.
I do not know how to term the euphoria surrounding "Prem" or what made " Prem" the darling of the masses '. Whether Harshad knows it or not, his performances, especially in passionate scenes, are inimitable and unsurpassed to any. We are not sure how he actually does it, but there almost seems to be a natural drive in him that just takes over his acting in these scenes. The result leaves us speechless. At the end of the day, we as an audience, are shooting in the dark with our interpretations of a scene. But, it's a huge feat for any actor that the audience is urged to analyze such intricate expressions by him and we admit that we are one of those. He literally compel us not only to elevate the strength and sincerity of Prem that he portrays, but leave us spellbound as to how a mere actor could evoke us to believe the "lasting love" that he effortlessly portrays. There's certainly nothing uncommon about love stories on Indian television and there's nothing uncommon about actors portraying those love stories. Yet, the audience finds this love story exceptional. It may be because of the honesty and modesty with which Harshad & Additi delivered their performances or it may be because they are just especially skilled at his craft. Whatever may be the reason, it is the impact of certain emotions, expressions or dialogue delivery that enhances the aura and conviction of the scene; they together manage to amaze us by simply excelling in them.
People will long remember that Harshad Chopda & Additi Gupta instilled life in the inimitable character of Prem and Heer and made it reach the highest pedestal. Women adore Prem and Men are in love with Heer but both men and women are most likely to spite them for raising the bar so high for love and passion. Jokes aside,
Congratulations Mr. Chopda & Ms Gupta! We hopy/pray that you never lose the spark and the certainty and finesse with which you make every scene convincing for the audience.
Hope you all enjoyed the Write up and the video. And all the old memories revived in us. We wil always cherish this Scene and Date and the depth of the Scene.
