Hey guys,

This is my first attempt to write a ff. Apologise for the long post. Awaiting to hear your comments.

I Love You

Prem did not want to go back to the party. He was sure that everybody would wonder what was
wrong with him. He did not want to face the gang and of course, Heer. All these days he was
fighting with himself for not telling Heer the truth - his true love, his soul mate. But
after hearing Heer saying that she was in love with Prem's face and not Prem - his life
shattered. Nothing was more heartbreaking than this - not the bomb blast, not the hardships
his family had to endure when he wasnt around, not the thought of Heer getting married to RR.
Nothing!!

Heer was looking for Prem - actually waiting for him. She knew that Prem was hurt by whatever
she said. But wasn't she entitled to know the truth? What was so wrong that Prem didnt want
to share even with her? "I know he is hurting and I want to share his pain. I know I made him
sad, but why doesn't he understand what his silence is doing to me? It was hard to see him
walk out of my life once. Now he is back and he does not want to acknowledge that he is Prem.
He does not want to acknowledge I am his Heer and he does not want to acknowledge our love.
Why Prem, Why??"

Just then, Heer happened to get a phone call - from Gaurav Sharma's mother. The lady wanted
to know why Heer left hurriedly without even saying goodbye. Heer apologises. The nice lady
says, "Tum Heer ho na, Prem ki Heer?". "Lekin auntyji, aapko kaise pata?". "Mujhe sab pata
hai - tumhare bare mein, Prem aur tumhare pyaar ke bare mein. Har waqt Prem tumhare hi to
baatein kartha tha".

"My dear, I know what you are thinking. You are wondering why Prem is not telling you that he
is Prem. Why he is being distant with you. He had a hard time adjusting after the bomb blast.
He is still haunted by the horror of that day. It bought home all the barbarity of the people
we are dealing with. On that day, Prem came face to face with the worst that human cruelty
can devise. He has not been able to deal with it. You have to help him dear. He needs you."

Heer murmured her thanks and put down the phone. She could not believe what she had heard.
She had heard about post traumatic stress. Is that what Prem is going through? And yet
ridiculously she had never once thought that in connection with Prem - no one had. Prem -
someone who has always in total control, contained. For the first time she realised
something. Those aspects of his personality, the one she fell in love with, were probably the
worst possible combinations for the kind of stress that Prem must be under.

The after effects of that blast - An inability to feel, A tendency to isolation. Including a
rejection of those who care about him? Then Heer had a thought - "Does Prem think by getting
close to me, he will leave me vulnerable if something happens to him again?" Is that why he
is keeping away from me?

Heer put on a determined face and decided she wanted to confront Prem and talk to him about
it. "But he doesn't want you there" - an inner voice told her. "I am all he has and he is all
I have. I have to know the truth".

Heer decides she will confront her in the bedroom. But Prem wasn't there. Caught up with all
the stress of the day, Heer waits for Prem and goes of to sleep.

Prem slowly walks into the bedroom still angry and confused and upset. After walking around for the past hour, he realises that there is more to what Heer said. "She suspects something and she wants to hear it from me. But there is no way I am going to tell her anything. I dont want to see her hurt".

He sees Heer sleeping soundly. She was looking so beautiful and so calm. The strain on her face was gone dissolved either by the faint moonlight or the relaxation of sleep. She looked exactly like the woman she was before the bomb blast. If only he was the same man...........

But only he wasnt. One event had changed his life. If he tried and explained to Heer, she
would understand and would respond with the appropriate platitudes. And she would mean them.
But he was not the man she fell in love with. He could never be that man again. He could not
see pity or worse disgust in her eyes. He wanted her to remember him as the guy he was for
the past few days - the cold, uncaring person with no love for her rather than having her to
understand who he really was.

He wanted to go and let her sleep. But he couldn't do that. All he wanted was to stand in the
black silence and fill in the sight of her. He sat down by the bed and allowed his hands to
touch the strand of her that fell against her cheek, worried and yet anticipating that she
would wake up. But she didnt. He resisted the impulse to touch her smooth silky skin and kiss
those delectable lips. He had never known such temptation or such certainty that it would be
the biggest mistake of his life. Far better to leave the situation as it is. For a moment, he
looked at her and whispered - the words hardly a breath in the darkness "There was no one
else. No one who was ever like you. There never will be. I love you with all my heart and
soul". And then he was gone. As softly as he came.

Part 2

Prem went on to the terrace and felt the cold air on his face. He was not happy with the
constant fighting between him and Heer. But he knew that there were many things unsaid
between the both of them. He had treated Heer as if she weren't entitled to be told the
truth. It wasn't that he entitled to tell her now. It was simply that he hated to leave
things as they were between them. AS melodramatic as it sounded, this might be the last
chance he'd ever have to make them right.

Prem sat in the darkness and after a moment or two he could hear the familiar night sounds.
Gradually, away in the distance he became aware of the rhythmic beat of the night creatures
in the woods. There was nothing else. Heer. He allowed the image of her face as she slept to
form his mind as he slowly stood up. The sound of the breeze was clearer now, but there were
no other noises in the stillness.

As soon as the bedroom door closed, Heer opened her eyes, wondering why she had left Prem go
without saying anything. When he had first opened the door, she had been unsure of his
purpose in coming, so she had pretended to be asleep. She had decided since the time of
their confrontation that the next move must be up to him. Then, as always, he had thrown her
surety about his feelings - and even about her own - into confusion by those whispered
words. There was no one else. No one who was ever like you. There never will be. And she
couldn't doubt the quiet sincerity of them. And if she hadn't been such a coward........

As soon as the word formed in her consciousness, Heer sat up on the bed. Prem had come to
find her. An overture, which in her hurt and uncertainty she had refused to acknowledge. She
walked around the bedroom and found that Prem wasn't there. She went out the bedroom and
started looking in the other rooms. Nothing moved below and there was something in the
quality of the air that indicated Prem wasn't there. She wondered where Prem was. He
couldn't have gone far. And she didnt hear the sounds of any vehicle, so she was sure he was
home. And Prem wouldn't have left in the middle of the night and worry his family. A thought
scared her. What if Prem was hurt or if he is pain? She at once remembered his headaches
when she first saw him after coming back from Rajasthan. She remembered that Prem was trying
to convince her that he was Gaurav Sharma and had passed out on the road. What was that all
about? Was he sick? Is that the reason he was trying to detach himself from her? Or were
those flashbacks of the horror he had endured?

From what little she knew about flashbacks, she knew they occured without warning, sending
the sufferer mentally, and more importantly emotionally, into another time and place. And
her understanding was that there was nothing that could be done to prevent them. No way to
control when they might strike. Heer realised that Prem was afraid that he will leave her
vulnerable. But he was the one who was vulnerable. From what RR said, Prem went to him and
posed as Gaurav Sharma to destroy the Junejas. She knew how ruthless RR could be and at that
moment she was scared for him. She had to find Prem and convince him to tell her the truth
so that they could deal with it together. He didnt have to do it alone. She would help him
face all the adversaries.

Heer knew that there was only one place that Prem would go when he was disturbed - the
terrace. She slowly went up the stairs deciding on what she would say and how she would
convince Prem to trust her. As soon as she reached the end of the stairs, she turned, eyes
surveying her surroundings as she took a few seconds to catch her breath. She was aware of a
slight sound behind her. Before she had a chance to react, a hand was clamped over her
mouth. At the same time she was jerked off her feet by a forearm around her chest, pulling
her up into the muscled wall of a man's body. At that moment she realised it was Prem.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Prem whispered, his mouth against her ear.

"I was looking for you", she said.

Prem removed his arm from her body and took a step back, freeing her. Despite the heat, she
shivered at the loss of his warmth. There had been something very reassuring, in spite of
his fury, about the feel of Prem's body around her.

"Why are you here?" said Prem controlling his anger and concern to ask the obvious question.

"I know about your flashbacks. I know about you. I spoke to Gaurav's mother. I went to Delhi
to meet her to know more about you" she said.

What was reflected in his eyes was clearly pain. They had seemed to physically flinch from
the information. Prem obviously considered Gaurav's mother telling her about the post-
traumatic stress a betrayal.

"That's why......." Heer began....

"That's why you came riding to the rescue,"he finished for her when she stopped.

"We were a team,"she said softly. In every way imaginable.

"We aren't anymore"

"You can't do this alone, Prem. Not with ---"

"I can do it a hell of a lot better alone than I can with you hung around my neck"

It hurt, even though she knew that he'd meant for it to. Maybe just to drive her away, but
still........

"You didn't used to feel that way," she said, trying to keep the tears out of her voice.

"I didn't used to feel a lot of the things I feel now. And no, there isn't anything about
what I feel that we're going to discuss. You need to find someone else to do the good deed
for the day"

She steeled her heart at the taunt and chose a weapon of her own. A woman's weapon.

"I heard what you said" she said softly.

"I don't know what you are talking about" he said, but his eyes told that he did.

"I knew you were there, I heard what you said"

"You really have changed, haven't you?" he accused.

"Only because you have" she replied.

There was a slight smile on his lips and a light in his eyes that was bright with love and
admiration.

"What do you want me to say?" he asked with a slight humour which lit up his face.

"I want you to tell me the same things you said in my bedroom. I want you to tell me that
you are my Prem."

At that moment Prem felt a pain in his head. He was having a flashback again. Heer's
features began to change, becoming someone else's face before his eyes. He fought the
flashback, the heat and the sound of the fire were all around him.

"Prem", "Prem"

Somebody was calling his name. Heer. He knew that in some rational, still-functioning atom
of his brain.

The flashbacks slowly faded and he focused his eyes on Heer. He was afraid to close his
eyes, afraid that if he did, he would awaken to some other reality. A reality in which he
had failed Heer.

"Prem" Heer's voice. He would have known that anywhere. "It's ok. Everything's alright".

Prem realised she was right. He allowed his burning eyes to close, giving in to relief.
Moisture stung behind his lids, and he wasn't sure if it was sweat or tears. He reopened
them finally and turned to nod.

"I am sorry. I have to go" he said.

"I haven't done anything to deserve that"she replied.

And she was right. He couldnt find fault with any of her actions till now. If he were
honest, he would have to admit he'd have done the same thing if their situations were
reversed.

"You saw what happened" he said.

"All the more reason....."

"All the more reason for you not to be depending on me. It isn't right for you" he replied.
"I never know what will trigger it. It can be anything. Something totally unexpected."

"I understand that."she said.

Her eyes hadn't changed. They remained on his, reflecting none of the emotions that he had
been terrified he would see within them. Which doesn't mean she won't eventually feel them,
he thought.

Prem had known all along that she would believe this couldn't make any difference to her
feelings about him. He, on the other hand, had lived with this a long time. He knew all the,
and not-so-subtle ways in which it had changed him. Ways Heer couldn't possibly imagine.

"What kind of a person would you be if all you have seen and done and experienced didn't
affect you?" she said softly. Prem shook his head, but for some reason his throat closed,
tight and aching at what was in her voice.

"That's the person I wouldn't want to love," Heer went on. "Thank God he doesn't exist."

"You don't understand," Prem said, his voice low.

"Give me a chance, Prem. You've never given me a chance."

"Heer" Prem try to protest but it clearly didnt have the desired effect. He knew it wouldnt.

"Why can't you see how ridiculous this is?" said Heer.

That was the last argument Prem had expected her to make. He had thought she might say that
whatever had happened to him, they would deal with it together. Or that it didn't matter.
Just not that it was.... ridiculous.

"No,"he said.

"I don't care about the flashbacks, I don't care about any of it".

"You don't know about any of it", Prem said, sounding defensive.

"I can learn. It hasn't changed anything about you that's really important".

"Heer", Prem tried.....

"Stop saying that,"she said. "How would you feel?"

"How would I feel? About what?"

"If it were me. If I'd been in the bombing. If I was the one having the flashbacks" "I am
not asking you for anything more than what we had before" she said.

Which was a whole hell of a lot more than he had now.

"No promises" Heer continued.

"You deserve better than that" Prem complained.

"What I deserve is you. Prem, I am tired of being alone. I didn't know how tired of it I was
until you showed up in Rajasthan. There's been this huge, gaping hole in my life since you
were gone. I just want to be with you"

"There's more than the flashbacks,"Prem said, trying one last time to resist what she was
offering. Trying to be fair.

"I figured there was. We'll deal with that, too. Or we won't. All i know is 'nothing
ventured, nothing gained'" Heer replied.

"Are you sure?" he said.

"There may be another bomb blast. Your's or mine. Nothing's ever sure. This breath. This
moment. Thats what matters now. And I'm all for grabbing those that present themselves."

The most rational thing that anyone had said to him in a long time, Prem thought. And
slowly, holding her eyes, he nodded his agreement.

"Its getting a bit cold in here. Shall we go inside?" said Heer with a mischievous grin.

"There was never anyone else. Not like you, There never will be. I love you with all my
heart and soul" Prem said pulling Heer and lifting her into his arms.

Ash, that was so well-written, so well expressed. I do hope you write a sequal to it, because this was just heartwrenching, for both of them. I can only hope that the creatives read this, and use this is as some sort of logical explanation of Prem's behaviour.
