He sat on the branch of the big tree that divided the Juneja house from the Maan house. He bit into an apple, reclining boyishly on the branch. It was a good thing that the tree had branches that were high but still strong enough to bear his weight, or Preet Juneja would have had to find another way to spy on the Maan girls.
And speaking of them, he thought, a grin spreading on his face as Heer and Meher Maan came out of their house, ushered by their oldest sister, Kulraaj. She looked towards the big tree, looking out for Preet. Her eyes narrowed as she spotted him. He nodded at her, still grinning cheekily, waving with his half-eaten apple. With a shake of her head, Kulraaj nudged Heer and Meher to the car, where her husband Kiran was waiting to drop the two girls off on his way to work. Heer risked Kulraaj's wrath to sneak a glance up at the tree, rolling her eyes as she spied Preet and standing up a little straighter.
Heer Maan was tall and slender, willowy, with long straight hair and almond-shaped eyes that could be as seductive as they could angry. The most flirtatious of the three sisters, Heer was outspoken, saying whatever she thought, and this trait had gotten her into trouble with Kulraaj on more than one occasion.
After their parents' death, Kulraaj had taken over the responsibility of taking care of her sisters, making sure they got a proper education, something which had not gone to waste: Heer had a degree in law and was interning at a rather prestigious law firm, hoping to land a job there eventually; Meher had just completed her degree in fine arts and had found a job at an art gallery, assisting the curator in selecting art pieces from both local and international artists.
It was Meher that held Preet's attention at 8.17 a.m. every morning. Meher was a little shorter than Heer, and had a fuller figure, and standing next to Heer, no one would give her a second look. She was shy and soft-spoken, and had only looked up at Preet the first time he had climbed the tree: a bird had harassed him, mistaking his shaggy black hair for a nest and thus giving him a broken arm. He had seen a smile on her face then (though she had tried her best to hide it), and that smile had made the broken arm worth it. He hadn't been able to get Meher's smile out of his head. Once his arm had recovered, Preet spent every morning up on the tree, hoping to catch another glimpse of the smile that made his heart beat like a rabbit on drugs and his head turn to mush.
To say that he had been unsuccessful was quite an understatement.
As Heer and Meher got into the sleek white car, Preet sighed, taking a final bite of his apple. He slowly made the climb down, being careful not to fall.

"Jiju, Preet kitna sweet hai na? Har din voh humari Meher ke liye ped par intezzar karta hai," Heer teased, glancing nonchalantly at her sister as she filed her nails.
Meher stared resolutely out the window, determined not to let Heer get to her. Her heart was still beating out a steady staccato rhythm in her ribcage, an annoying tune so loud she was sure Heer could hear it and was teasing her because of that.
Kiran glanced at Meher from the rearview mirror, smiling. "Heer, bechchari ko choro na! Bataao, tumhara internship kaisa chal raha hai?"
Meher smiled gratefully at the rearview mirror reflection of her jiju, silently thanking him for the change in subject.
Heer winced. "I feel like a doormat."
Kiran laughed. "You're an intern, Heer. You're supposed to be a doormat."
As her jiju and her Di discussed Heer's internship and the probability of her working there once her stint was over, Meher let her mind wander. And of course, it wandered to the one person it wandered to every morning at 8.23 a.m.
Was Heer Di right? Did Preet Juneja, the Preet Juneja, notorious for his charming, suave ways, really wait for her every day in the big tree that divided the modest Maan house from the extravagant Juneja mansion?
No, he was probably interested in Heer Di. Which guy wasn't? Heer was movie star material, Kuldi was as pixie-like as one could get (and if she wasn't already married, there would be another queue of guys lining up for a date with her), and Meher'Meher was the wallflower sister.
She sighed softly. Maybe I should spend just a little more time there, Meher thought. For the past few weeks, she'd been learning cooking from Gayatri Juneja in a thinly-veiled attempt to catch another glimpse of Preet. All in vain, of course. He usually came home an hour or so after she left.
"Meher?" Heer asked, waving her hand in front of her sister's face. "Are, Meher, kahaan kho gayi ho? Preet ke bare mein soch rahi ho, na?"
Meher blushed furiously as she turned to sister. "Nahin, toh," she insisted.
Kiran pulled the car to a gentle stop. Heer said goodbye to Kiran and turned to Meher, a cheeky smile playing on her lips. "See you, Meher. Take your mind off Preet for a while and concentrate on your work!"
Meher felt her face heating up so much that you could have cooked an egg on it. She mumbled a 'goodbye' to Heer, turning back to look out her window, wishing the car seat would open up and swallow her.
As Kiran set off for Meher's art gallery, he glanced at her in the mirror again. He smiled. "Agar tum chaho to main tumhe Preet se mila doon..."
She stared at him, aghast, redder than ever. "Jiju! Aap bhi?"
He laughed, turning up the volume of the car radio.
Meher leaned her head against the window, turning her attention to the song and blocking out her thoughts.
Kis taraf hai aasman
Kis taraf zameen, khabar nahin, khabar nahin, oh
Jab se aaya hai sanam
Mujhko khud ki bhi khabar nahin
Khabar nahin
Meher smiled to herself.
