Chapter 16
"Heer…I" She never found out what he wanted to say. A knock sounded on the door. She jumped and moved away from him, staring out the window. "Come in," Prem called and she could hear the irritation in his tone. It was Anita. "I wanted to drop these off," she said pointing at a sheaf of paper. "It could have waited," he bit out. Anita's eyes widened in surprise, "But you said you needed these by four." Prem sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Yes…yes…fine. You can leave them on my desk." "I believe congratulations are in order," Anita said as she put the papers on the desk. Heer was mortified. She had been going to explain all that to Prem, but she had been sidetracked. She glanced over to him and saw the incomprehension on his face. "You got engaged, right…to Heer?" Heer groaned inwardly, not wanting to see Prem's reaction, yet unable to look away. If Prem was shocked, he did not show it. Instead, he walked up to Heer and put his arm around her shoulders and smiled. "Yes. Thank you." Heer was not sure who was more surprised, she or Anita. "Oh…well, I'll get going then," she said and left, closing the door behind her. "I had to say that…you see they weren't letting…" Heer hastened to explain. Prem looked down at her and said quietly, "I did not ask for an explanation, Heer." She moved away from him. "I was going to explain, anyway. What will you tell them when…when they find out it is not true?" Her voice was barely a whisper, her heart aching at the thought. Prem gave a sardonic laugh and looked away. "I am sure I will come up with something." "I…I need to freshen up," Heer muttered and Prem pointed to the door leading to the washroom. Once inside, she locked the door and leaned against it. Coming here and agreeing to help Prem had been a bad idea. Heer had forgotten that her senses took over when Prem was around. Or had she? She looked herself in the mirror and saw the flushed cheeks and the drowsiness in her eyes and was horrified. She had spent the last week essentially blaming Prem for kissing her, but what would have been her excuse today? Had she protested? Oh no, she had willingly accepted, even reveled in his desire for her. Where did they go from here, she wanted to ask Prem. Was it just a physical attraction for him? Heer was not so sure she wanted to know the answer, lest it was something she did not like.
He had almost told her that he loved her. And what a disaster that would have been, Prem thought to himself. For a moment he wondered what she would have done if he had indeed confessed his love for her. And sure enough he had no clue what she would have said. He had always prided himself for being able to read people, but Heer twisted him in knots till he was not able to think. He should have known what would happen if he kissed her. He had thought about her all day and when she had stood there gazing up at him, he had not been able to resist tasting her again. She had no idea what her innocent eyes did to him. Prem ran a hand over his face and leaned on the edge of his desk, staring out the window. Things were getting more complicated than he had imagined. His father thought that his marriage to Heer was a done deal, after, of course, waiting the three months that Heer had asked for. Prem would have married her tomorrow, if he could arrange it. All he'd have to do is walk up to his father and say he was ready to marry Heer. He was dead sure that Heer would never go against his dad's wishes. But, Prem wanted her to want to marry him…because she loved him. And there came the crux. How did you make someone fall in love with you? You couldn't. He was not certain if what Heer was feeling was just an intense reaction to the passion between them or something much deeper. Given time, he would find out. Till then, he'd have to tread very carefully.
