Audience response solicited for serial twists

The trials and tribulations of bahus on primetime draw the viewers€™ sympathy and small screen romances fascinate audiences. Milind-Prachi of Star Plus€™ Kayamath is a favourite couple whom audiences don€™t want to see breaking up. The channel has received a tremendous response asking for a patch up between the two, who are headed for divorce on the show.
Star Plus senior creative director Anupama Mandloi is excited about the feedback. "This romance has caught the fancy of viewers and they just don€™t want to see the couple separate. We have got so many emails asking us not to let them separate. We€™ll take their response into account, as long as it benefits the show. Any long running serial is a give and take process," she says.
Not only Kayamath, but also other television shows take viewers€™ response seriously. Producer Jay Mehta (Sindoor Tere Naam Ka, Solhah Singaarr) points out that TRPs are a deciding factor. "We get lots of mails about the shows and the TRPs are also an indicator of the audience€™s response. We incorporate whatever feedback we get within the parameters of the original story," he explains.
Producer Sunjoy Waddhwa agrees that the findings of market surveys alter the serial tracks. "We have a master story which we stick to for the first 50-80 episodes. After that, we maintain the main plot, but certain roles are either lessened or explored more," he says.
Soap addict Parveen Banu is absorbed by the twists and turns in the plot. "I watch serials from 8 pm to 11.30 pm on weekdays. The stories are full of sorrow and the protagonists face so many challenges. That€™s what makes it so interesting. When you watch a show everyday, you get involved in the characters€™ lives," she says.
Another regular viewer, Shah Jahan Begum speaks fondly of her favourite character, Prachi.
"She is such a sweet girl who always gets blamed for things when it€™s not her fault. Even then, she quietly bears all the pain. I hope she gets justice. All€™s well that ends well, so I hope the serial makers will clear all the misunderstandings and give us a happy ending," she adds.
Soap addicts feel passionately involved in their favourite shows. Luckily for them, the serial makers are only too happy to change the tracks according to audience feedback.
