Part 51
Prachi Inder Shah the name immediately conjured up the vision of a beauteous maiden simple and pure she was the first child hotelier Inder Shah had been blessed with. He had been elated when she had been born his first offspring, he had slaved hard all his life and had wished to present the world to her. Prachi was a means of fulfilling Inder's desires and wishes he provided her with everything he himself had lacked in his growing years. He had taken great care to get her educated at the leading institutions endowing her with the best of literary and social knowledge available. He had groomed her well and had showered her with unconditional love, in short she was the apple of his eye. Prachi was succeeded by Alaap Bobby and Soumya all of her siblings though special in their own way were never able to add up to the position Prachi held in Inder's life. To Inder life started and ended with Prachi at times Premlata his wife would fear such an affluence of love and care might spoil the young child. But contrary to her fears Prachi had turned out to be the most sensible, sensitive and naiive of her four children and she was happy it had been that way. As Prachi grew older her delicate nature was moulded into a traditional sculpture of the dutiful daughter who upheld traditions and values lived them and treasured them. She was the sort young lads pined for yet she never lifted an eye towards them moreso her innocence had enhaced her beauty and her kind and gentle nature had added to it blessing her with an extraordinary charm. Amongst the people who hoped to attain her was Shashank Saxenna a spoilt, rich and arrogant youngster. He was an epicure yet had been ruined by excessive luxuries and unmonitored access to abundance of wealth. His parents had died in a car crash leaving him in the care of his uncle Sandiip Sickand who himself was the devil incarnated and had left no stone unturned in making his nephew an exact replica of him. Life had been generous to Prachi she had everything she had ever desired at her disposal in a blink of an eye but all that was to change unknown to her because such is the manner in which fate operates blessing one yet depriving the other for no rhyme or reason. Prachi had been attending college for four long years and as the exams drew nearer so had the desire to clear them all with flying colours the job was tough but Prachi was a consistent and hardworking girl. Soon that difficult phase was done with and now the results were awaited, before college was bid farewell for life the administration had arranged a party for the final year students as is accustomed. Prachi had never been keen on attending parties neither did she intend to attend this one but her friends had stressed upon her presence there citing it as the last time they could be all together on their college grounds.
A sense of nostalgia has washed over Prachi as she walked through the dark corridors of her alma mater some of the best years of her life had been spent there. As she strolled listlessly through the passageway she was surprised to see a group of lads huddled together in the far corner of the hall she decided to move on when she heard her name spring up in the loud whispers. She was concealed well in the shadows of a sandstone pillar and decided to investigate further as far as she knew she had not been aquainted with any of the people assembled there. On straining her ears she realized that a plot was being hatched to trap her into getting laid by a certain Shashank Saxenna, her anger knew no bounds. She remembered Shashank from the various occassions on which he had tried to act friendly with her, the way he looked at her had her despise him it felt as if he were always trying to size her up. His deep green eyes depicted lust and Prachi had known it best to maintain her distance from him since day one but here right now she could not stop herself. What did he think she was another one of the college lasses who wasted no time in being all over him. Just because he had the power and looks did not mean he could play God to her too. Her hands shook with rage as she quietly made her way back to the college auditorium where the party was in full swing, she had not wished to remain there a minute longer but was forced to as her father had still not arrived to pick her up. Meandering through the crowd she took her seat on an empty table toying with her drink when she felt someone pull up a chair opposite her. As expected it was Shashank cold fury engulfed Prachi as she met his gaze with courage hoping he would not drive her to act in a regrettable way. Shashank had tried to make conversation but when Prachi did not respond he had been irritated his friends had laughed at him when he had vowed to make Prachi his that night and he was hell bent to prove them that he indeed held the authority to have the last word. Prachi bore his advances in silence but when she saw him cross limits she could no longer play ignorant pushing back her chair she had stood up to leave when Shashank had held her by her wrist and that was the last straw. In a split second Prachi had slapped him hard across his face the party had stopped midway everyone stood struck with wonder as they saw an entirely different Prachi emerge from her cocoon. "Chaar saal main tumhain bardasht kerti rehi yeh soch ker keh waqt key saath tum sudhar jaogey or larkiyon ko apney faidey key liye istimaal kerna chor dogey. Lekin sudhaar wahaan aata hai jahan chah ho per tumney to kabhi sahi or ghalat key farq ko hii nahin samjha phir kisi ki izzat key saath khelna tumharey liye kiya maainey rakheyga. Mujhey umeed hai yeh thappar tumhain zindagi bhar yaad raheyga" saying so Prachi had pulled her hand from his grasp walking off amidst a thunderous applause. Shashank was not only a cheap flirt he was also a bully and snob which had caused students and teachers to loathe him alike. The slap had left a lasting impression on Shashank's heart and cheek one that he would not forget for a very long time to come.
Time had passed quickly it had been two years to the incident and no mention of Shashank had ever risen in her life after that night Prachi was busy with her work then. She assisted Inder in his business aspiring to learn a thing or two who was only too glad to have her with him having lost all hope in Alaap. Inder had desired to train Alaap under his watchful eye and make him turn into the next budding entrepreneur in Mumbaii but sadly some dreams never are fulfilled neither was Inder's. Alaap was of a different breed since an early age he had started showing his true colours as he advanced in years his bend of mind was more towards detrimental activities. His social gathering was not a respectable one too all his friends hailed from the elite class but were steeped in filth and one such friend that headed the gang was Shashank. The idea was not new the night Shashank had borne humiliation and shame at Prachi's hands with an entire college body as witness he had vowed to make her his if only for a night. He intended to make her grovel, beg him for mercy and then he would find peace at last. The raging fire that burnt his heart and soul alike would be put out but before that he would not rest. Shashank had long sought for a weak link that would eventually tie him to Prachi and Alaap had turned out to be just that. Unknown to his family Alaap spent many comfortable days with Shashank who had educated him in all the wrong lessons, Alaap drank and gambled at Sandiip's house till late hours. Inder had come to know of it at a very late stage by then Alaap had become so engrossed in his new lifestyle that Inder's threats did not matter much to him. Alaap was not a good player and often lost money at the game which Shashank would conveniently pay on his behalf waiting for the right moment to strike Alaap and finally his patience had paid off. Now they did not play at the confines of Shashank's house with his guards and servants as playmates they did it big in bars and casinos, it was a cold stormy night when Alaap and Shashank had gotten in a friendly game of cards. As the evening advanced so had the game and before long Alaap had lost everything right down to his shoes. Laughing dryly Shashank had reminded him of the loans he had generously lent to him in his time of need asking for it all that night. "Tum pagal ho gaye ho Shashank main itna saara paisa kahaan sey launga?" Alaap had felt his blood freezing Inder had not yet known of his current finacial status because unperceived by Inder, Alaap had bet his house Shah mansion and various assets of the company from time to time to quench his thirst for the game. All of that had been paid off by Shashank who now threatened to expose him infront of Inder if he did not comply to his bidding. "Aakhir tum chahtey kiya ho mujh sey?" Alaap had asked flustered he could not see any way out of the mess he had single handedly created. "Prachi" Shashank had breathed to Alaap who stood stunned "Ussey merey paas bhej do... woh meri ho jayegi or yeh sab tumhara." Shashank had placed the papers of the mansion on the glass table at his farmhouse coolly. "Tumhara dimagh kharab ho gaya hai Shashank Prachi meri behen hai" Alaap had screamed in rage. "Per meri to nahin" Shashank had drawled gulping the rich blood red wine from the tumbler he held. "Soch lo Alaap sirf eik raat kii hii to baat hai kisi ko pata bhi nahin chaleyga, tumharey Papa ko bhi nahin or tumhara ghar bhi tumhain waapas mil jayega. Sauda bura nahin... " Shashank had tempted him. "Main nahin ker sakta aisa" Alaap had declared defiantly when Shashank saw this was not working he had asked Alaap to play another hand. If Alaap won he could get all that he had forfeited back but if he lost to Shashank he would lose his sister too and this time Shashank wouldn't ask for his permission. Alaap was caught if he denied to gamble Shashank would march up to his father and throw his family out of the house if he did indeed play another hand he might win it all back and in that unfortunate moment he had bet Prachi along with the other assets. The game was set the deed done Alaap had lost again and this time it was a fatal blow he had received, he stood paralysed when Shashank had set off to claim Prachi as his.
The way back home was one Alaap would never forget till he breathed somehow he had to stop him was the sole thought that swirled in his mind. As Shashank had stepped inside the threshold to his abode Alaap had howled in misery hurling curses at him. He fought and kicked Shashank who soon had him rounded up by his goons walking briskly inside the peaceful haven named Shah mansion. Prachi sat chatting to her father at the dinner table Premlata had left for a dental appointment with her mother in law, Soumya was at a friend's place while Bobby was taking a shower. Inder had not been feeling well lately he had come to know of his wealth being depleted at Alaap's hands and had been astounded on his own negligence why had he let it come to this. Why had he not stopped Alaap when he should have why had been so caught in his own race to the top that he had forgotten about his responsibility towards his children. Shashank had walked in at that moment followed closely by Alaap held roughly by his guards who had thrown him down relieving their hands off him. Inder had looked up in surprise at this rather bizzarre entrant dressed in black from head to foot Shashank had smiled casually at Prachi. "Hello Prachi nice to see you again, do saal main bhuuli to nahin hogi mujhey" he had laughed making himself comfortable on the chair beside her pulling her hand he forced her to sit by him. "Apna haath hatao Shashank" Prachi had told him solemnly before shrugging it off herself and had scooted towards Inder who had held her close. "Tum kon ho or yahaan kiya ker rahey ho?" Inder had asked Shashank sternly. "Behter hoga yeh sawaal aap apney betey sey karein or raha sawal merey yahaan aaney ka to mujhey Prachi dey dijiye main chala jaunga." Shashank had tried to act polite smirking at the oblivious father who hardly knew what his son had been up to."Kiya bak rahey ho tum? Prachi ko ley jaaney waaley tum kon hotey ho?" Inder had questioned in a cutting tone it was evident by the way in which he held Prachi to him that he was not going to let Shashank place a finger on her. "Ley jaaney ka haq hai mujhey jeeta hai mainey issey juey kii baazi main aapkey betey se" Shashank had elaborated on the details placing an authoritative hand over Prachi as she watched him with repugnance. It couldn't be true he was lying she just couldn't believe him how could her own brother put her up for a bet surely he could not think so low of her they shared a bond, a blood relation. "Alaap yeh kiya bol raha hai tum sun rahey ho bolo na yeh jhoot bol raha hai .... tum ney mujhey daav per nahin lagaya na.. bolo na Alaap" she had pleaded to her brother who sat grief stricken his head bent low and in that catastrophic moment she had known of it being the stark reality. Her face had lost colour while Inder stared at his son in astonishment how could he put his sister at stake for a mere game. "Chalo merey saath" Shashank had declared swinging her on his shoulder he had led a screaming Prachi out of the safety of her home. "Choro mujhey choro!!!!" Prachi had had shrieked in panic a chilling rush of fear had coursed her veins then. Her head hanging down she lay propped on Shashank's broad shoulder raining his back with a volley of punches. "Choro mujhey main kahin nahin jaungi... choro" she had screeched writhing in agony as dread had replaced horror somehow she had an inkling on what was going to follow next. Inder had tried to wrench Prachi from Shashank but had been brutally rebuffed by his goons who had dealt him with a fussilade of kicks and punches. "Prachi" Inder had whispered bruised and beaten dragging himself on the icy marble his hand outstretched as he froze in a cold mass on the floor. His life his daughter Prachi had been taken away from him in such a monstrous way how could he breathe any longer he had suffered a massive heart stroke and had died on the spot. "Papa... Papa!!!" Alaap had shaken Inder's lifeless form thoroughly but it was of no use the soul had departed from it's restrictive confines of the body leaving behind a heap of flesh and bones.
Once at his farmhouse Shashank had taken a howling Prachi to his bedroom closing it behind him he had flung her on the master bed. Laughing demonically he had advanced towards her "Shashank agar tum ney mujhey haath bhi lagaya to" Prachi had warned him in a shaking voice inching away from him. "Haath to kiya Prachi ajj to tuu saari meri hai sirf meri" he had snarled. Closing in the distance between them ripping off her dupatta he threw it away abusing her fragile body with his cold and beastly hands clawing on her gentle form. Prachi had felt as if this was a very bad dream she could still not believe this was actually happening Shashank was trying to rape her but her senses were quickly enlivined when she felt his hands on her torso. "Choro mujhey CHORO!!" she had screamed her voice hoarse with the shrill shrieks that emitted from her throat in retataliation muffled in the thunderous claps of the stormy night. Raindrops sluiced against the closed window panes of the room the thunder bolts wreaking havoc on the skies lashing water in fury as if angered by all that happened below. She cried for help desperately attempting to get him off her but alas he was stronger than she had anticipated. Pinning her down to the bed Shashank had managed to strip her bare leaving deep scars on her chest as he dug in her soft skin with his nails and teeth during the struggle making her cry in torment. "Please mujhey chor do" she sobbed "main haath jorti huun tumharey please" Prachi had implored crying hot tears abhorring his wretched and criminal act trying her level best to push his lean form off her. In an attempt to be freed she had bit him then hard on his hand fuelling his anger making him torture her all the more but he had moved then, off her as a vicious plan formed in his evil mind the game was yet to begin how could he finish it so soon. Prachi had stared at him destitutely pulling the blanket to cover her naked form shivering so hard she feared her teeth would start chattering. "Abhi to tarpana baaqi hai tumhain Prachi..." Shashank had winked at her watching her with pleased eyes she was exactly where he had wanted her in his clutches helpless and doomed. "Yaad hai woh thappar main to nahin bhuula per tumhain bhi saari umer yaad rakhwaunga.... aajkey baad" he had clutched a fistful of her hair jerking her head brutally towards his own. Prachi could smell alcohol as he breathed on her "Aaj key baad tumhain yaad raheyga to sirf mera chehra Prachi" he had sneered close to her as she shut her eyes to block his hideous face from view. "Sotey jaagtey uthtey bethtey.... sirf main hii main nazar aaunga" he had cackled throwing his head back laughing insanely.
In that instant Prachi had desperately tried to find something to defend herself with, her furtive eyes had gleaned a lamp placed close on a table not far. Now if only she could reach it she had thought wiping away her tears for better vision but Shashank had other plans. He had switched the lights on bathing the room in a brilliant world of hues producing a digital camera from a side drawer he had set the timer. "Ab aayega maza!" he had grinned sadistically and before Prachi could know what was happening he had pulled the blanket in one swift motion away from her. Revealing her to the camera's naked eye and in a flash the picture had been stored safe in the appliance. Prachi had quickly curled herself up horror stricken at the level to which he had stooped but by then it was too late Shashank had clicked a few more pictures of her making her wish she would die in that instant. She groped about for the blanket while he kept taking the pictures laughing hysterically all the time. Prachi sat numbed she realized from that moment on her life was finished and if there was nothing left to secure she might as well end it. Not being able to bear it anymore Prachi had jumped off the bed and pushed him hard, he was not expecting this from her and was caught off guard. Running to the table Prachi had picked up the heavy porcelain lamp and had smashed it on Shashank's head rendering him dysfunctional for a few moments and that was the time Prachi had to avail. Sprinting to the bedside she had dressed herself of what remained of her clothes when she saw him coming around for a moment. She was tempted to take the camera but it was still held tightly by Shashank in his left hand. Prachi could see the blow though hard was not enough to make him lose consciousness she could hear him moaning muttering curses to her. Unlocking the door she had run down the stairs trying to avoid detection she feared if she remained there any longer Shashank would finally complete the task he had wished to undertake that night and deprive her off her honour. She could hear his goons sitting in the hallway drinking and gambling if she went that way they would certainly catch her again. Her body trembled and she hoped she wouldn't pass out with the shock she had gone through but her mind urged her convincing her to flee. It was one of those horrible moments when one realizes death awaits at the next bend but still one tries to dodge it in a mad desperate desire to live and Prachi had done the same. She crouched low then making her way to the back door tugging it open to hear it creak slowly "Arey tuuney awaaz suni chotey" one of the goons had pricked his ears. "Haan ustaad woh billi hogi Raghu kii har waqt saali ider'j ghumreyli hoti hai" Chotu had spoken up as Prachi awaited them to come there with bated breath. But it seemed they were least concerned busy in their leisurely activities pulling the door wide open not waiting to see whether anyone followed her or not Prachi had leapt out in the back yard immediately drenched as the rain pelted down on her. She ran as hard as she could and as fast as her legs would allow, breathless and worn she had slipped in the wet mud many a times but always managed to coax herself to get up and run.... run away from Shashank.

Part 52
The contryside was deserted and appeared all the more frightening as Prachi ran blindly through the expansive corn fields surrounding Shashank's farmhouse. He had brought her to this wilderness to make sure no living soul ever came to know of the inflictions he had prepared to bestow upon Prachi that black night. The soggy ground trapped Prachi's feet in it's hold hindering her flight she had fallen countless times, her clothes were soiled, muddy and wet. Her body throbbed with pain as the fresh wounds Shashank had engraved on it were washed in the drowning rain but Prachi pushed all thoughts aside. She did not register anything neither the icy cold wind that rushed through the aphotic isolation, nor the stinging rain drops as they fell hard and fast like little lead balls attacking her viciously. Her mind chanted one slogan "RUN.... RUN" and that was all that she was doing or capable of thinking at the moment. Her limbs ached from over exhertion but she did not care as she slogged on thrashing through the damp vegetation waving in the winds that lashed furiously manouvering the downpour. It had been hours now or so it seemed to Prachi who had reached a dirt road, morning was still far away and no traces of light or sound were picked up by her. She felt as if she was trapped in limbo no matter what way she took or what course she tread she was ensnared in a desolate jungle. She had left Shashank and his atrocities far back but to her it seemed they stood right behind her waiting to snap her back in that nightmare. Exhausted, breathless and drained she had felt herself fall in welcoming oblivion in the middle of the road. She had not known then that Shashank had been hot on her heels but a stroke of luck on Prachi's part had made him wander far away from her in her search. She had not known too how Mr Mishra had chanced to see her lie on the road in that frazzled form her ragged and torn appearance telling her tale of woes. Mr Mishra had been on his way to Mumbaii where his daughter awaited his arrival at her wedding. He had been in a hurry returning from an important errand from Chandigarh where Bua lay sick and had opted for a short cut he knew through the fields. Little had he known two years later the exact same maid would turn out to be the daughter in law he prized and loved similar to his own daughter. Extremely taken aback by her decrepit condition Mishra jii had asked the driver to make her lie on the back seat of his car and had driven her to City hospital. He had asked the doctor there to provide her with immediate medical attention claiming her to be his own flesh and blood on being interrogated about her basics.
And so Prachi had reached the hospital miles away from Shashank who hunted the grounds like a hyena on rampage seeking fresh blood. Had it not been Sukriti's wedding that same night Mr Mishra would never have left her but he was required at his house at that very moment to bid farewell to his daughter who awaited him to give her away. Instructing the driver to keep an eye on the young lady he had hailed a cab and left for home promising himself to come back the moment he finished his duties as a father. All Prachi remembered after gaining consciousness was lying in the hospital room with a clear beeping sound reaching her ears continually. She had roved her eyes to make sense of the unfamiliar surroundings the stark white plastered walls, the soft blue of her gown made it all feel surreal as if she were still in a dream. She realized soon that she lay bedridden at a hospital her body aching in retaliation to the extremes she had pushed it to . Her pulse was being monitored by a machine not far off while a drip steadily administered her with a fresh supply of medication. Images of the horrific events raced through her mind and she broke down completely, crying wretchedly the worst had been over but she was going to remember it with vivid clarity for the rest of her life. She had been shattered and her body mishandled as she examined the numerous scars on her bosom her heart wept in tribulation. Was it her fault that she did not allow Shashank to win her over in his first attempt, not let him own her like numerous other girls before her. Was it a sin to believe that her thoughts and love were a sacred douceur for the one she married, became wife to. She had never done any wrong nor wished ill for anyone then why did this tragedy befall her, she was scarred now for life and nothing she did or said would ever make it right. Hiding her lacerated face in her hands she sobbed bitterly she was ruined forever damned to the deepest pits of hell with no source of redemption in sight. She had remained unconcious for two days running a high temperature slipping in and out of the narcotic numbness that etched over her mind body and soul. Baba's driver had been sent home by the doctor and he had left asking the concerned personnel to inform him the minute Prachi gained conciousness. Unfortunately for Prachi Baba had suffered from a stroke of elevated blood pressure the night Sukriti was wed, he loved his daughter tremendously her departure had certainly not been taken lightly by him. It had been a week before Baba's fluctuating pressure had stabilized but by then Prachi had already been discharged and had managed to reach home only to find it black and mourning, Inder Shah remained no more.
The aftermath of that night was far from pleasant Alaap had fled the city and could not be traced, Shashank in a mad fury had withdrawn all cash he had paid in Alaap's stead causing the creditors to knock their doors. Very soon Shah Industries had been split up and the spoils feasted on by the creditors who awaited the asset ripping like sharks awaiting a kill. Premlata had thought it best to abandon everything and find refuge in a chawl she deemed Prachi's honour far more important than the monetary loss they had suffered. They had lived off the gold ornaments Premlata and Daadi had been wise enough to bring along with them till Bobby secured a menial job as a waiter in a restaurant. Soumya too had pitched in working as an assisstant at a boutique they had taken care to lay low knowing full well how Shashank would leave no stone unturned to find Prachi. Prachi had understood now why Shashank had been on her case for so long he sought revenge for her public admonishment of his act and had blamed herself entirely for her family's ruin. Life had not been easy those were dark and dreary days with Daadi's illness it had become worse, Prachi had mourned fate's injustice for six long months but then one day as she sat poring over her diary she came across something. Something that blessed her hope and courage to live and to push her past behind her, it was a notion Inder had penned in it for his daughter in some carefree moment. "Zindagi jeeney key liye hoti hai phir yeh tum per hai keh issey kaisey jiya jaaye har ghum ko seh ker muskuratey huey apney liye or apnon keyliye ya yeh maan ker keh jeeney laiq kuch bacha hii nahin. Hum aksar duusri baat per ghor kertey hain or yeh bhool jaatey hain keh eik hadsey per zindagi nahin tham sakti kyunki zindagi rukti nahin, kabhi nahin kisi key liye nahin. Phir ussey mutthi main band kerna bewaqufi hii hogi, yeh to azaad hai waqt ki tarah jis ka koi sira nahin hota. Is liye jiyo kyunki zindagi jeeney key liye hii to hai!" Little had she known then those were the exact same words Inder had spoken to Milind confined in the grey walls of his prison cell and he had found the reason to live just like Prachi had at that moment. From then on Prachi had not looked back she realized she had been living in a time warp after that fateful night. She could not spend the rest of her life that way and so she had started her search for a job ending up as assisstant to Sonia. Her family had been her constant support through her trying times often she would sit up screaming in the middle of the night haunted by Shashank fearing his appearance beside her. Premlata would rock her gently patting her while she wept in silence clinging on to her mother like an ant to a leaf in the midst of a rushing torrent. She knew now the nightmares would be a part of her life for how long was not a question but they would stay, clear at times and vague at others but they always came.
It had been a matter of minutes and Prachi had relived each and every agonizing moment in a flash it was all before her very eyes. She had tried so hard to bury it all in her mind but Shashank had pulled off the cover she had laid on her wounds heartlessly. Now they lay bleeding as they did back then, she was the same Prachi Shah tormented and repressed wishing for a swift demise. She had slowly opened her wet eyes to see Shashank sit regally opposite her enjoying her anguish savouring it wishing there was more to it. "Kaha tha na Prachi bhula nahin paaogi mujhey" he had hissed neurotically catching her wrist imprisoning it in his bony hands. "Haan Shashank bhula to main nahin paayi tumhain tum jaisey nasoor aasani sey nahin bhulaye jaatey, per ab main tumsey nahin darti. Kyunki merey pati ab merey saath hain or woh tumhain mujhey chuuney bhi nahin deingey" saying so she had wrested her hand free. "Pati!!!" Shashank had howled in merriment "Kon woh Milind Mishra....... bataya nahin ussney tumhain woh to tumhari shaadi kerwaney waala hai mujh sey." Shashank simply could not get enough of it his face had turned bright crimson as he tried his best to smother his screeching laughter that threatened to attract attention. "Arey tum dono sey barey paagal mainey nahin dekhey eik saal sey saath hotey huey bhi eik dusrey sey anjaan ho.....waisey bhi tumharey so called rishtey ki sachai main achi tarah jaanta huun koi shaadi nahin kii uss ney tum sey or eik baar ussey pata chal jaye keh tum uss raat merey saath thi to dobara mur ker nahin dekheyga tumhari taraf" straightening up he had cast an impassive look at a shocked Prachi who sat as if stoned. "Tum ney Milind sey kiya kaha?" Prachi had whispered still in a state of disbelief, Milind had known about Shashank and he never breathed a word to her. Why... why did he of all people do this to her, could he not have asked her about him once before setting her up to receive the biggest blow of her life. "Yehi keh tum meri fiance ho tumharey Papa humari shaadi kerwana chahtey they per beycharey uper shift ho gaye... tsk tsk tsk...." Shashank had mocked sympathy with the sorry figure that sat opposite him "Ab tayyar ho jao umer bhar ki jahannum key liye." Shashank had smiled holding her hand tightening his grip to see the blood stop circulating in it "Jab tak meri beyizzati ka badla nahin ley leta chain sey nahin jeeney duunga tumhain Prachi Shah!" he had vowed solemnly. Prachi had read somewhere history repeats itself but she had not anticipated repitition of events in such a short lapse of time gaining back her senses Prachi had pushed his hand away. "Khabardar jo mujhey chua to Shashank Milind ko main sab sach sach bata duungi phir dekhti huun kaisey kertey ho mujh sey shaadi" she had snapped angrily standing up to leave. "Buhut pyaar kerti ho na Milind sey...." Shashank had inquired causing her to stop in mid step as he fiddled with a fork testing it's prongs for sharpness. "Mainey suna hai uskey Delhi hotel ka inaugaration hai agley haftey" Shashank had teased Prachi menacingly winking at her slyly. "Kiya kehti ho chala duun tumhari tasveerain inaugaration per, sab hongey wahaan press, delegates, colleagues, friends, media.... buhut achi coverage hogi tumhari..... Mrs Prachi Milind Mishra free of cost" he had snarled like a wild beast. Prachi had gaped at him in horror, the pictures ... she had forgotten about that ofcourse he would've kept them safe for such a moment to blackmail her into fulfilling his whims. "Tum... tum... aisa nahin ker saktey..." she had stammered flabbergasted full aware of the fact that Shashank did indeed intend on pulling off this neat little trick. Pulling her obstinately to him he had cradled her in his lap "Hmm.... ab jaanti to ho mujhey achi tarah tum, ofcourse main yeh sab ker sakta huun..." pushing her hair away from her shoulder he had pressed his lips against her bare skin and Prachi had sprung up as if pricked with sharp needles. "Yeh ghatia khwab dekhna band kero Shashank main tumhari kabhi nahin hongi kabhi nahin.... suna tum ney!!" Prachi had screamed vehemently when Shashank had stabbed her with the fork in his hand. "Chup chaap yahaan beth jao or tamasha mat kero warna abhi key abhi press main bhijwa duunga tumharey pyaarey photos" he had threatened her pushing the fork deeper in her palm causing it to puncture her flesh. She stifled a scream as Shashank drove it in further "Ab bolo Prachi kiya kerna chahti ho Milind ka sapna pura hotey huey dekhna chahti ho ya uski barbaadi?" he had questioned her. "Shashank mujhey dard ho raha hai" Prachi had pleaded trying to free her hand from under the fork that dug in her soft hand. "Mujhey bhi aisey hii dard hua tha Prachi jab thappar maara tha tum ney mujhey" he had replied mercilessly twisting the silverware between his fingers watching her face contort in pain. Did she expect him to let her off the hook so easy, no atleast not in this lifetime "Tum meri ho Prachi koi Milind tumko mujhsey duur nahin ley jaa sakta.... aisa honey nahin duunga main" he had clarified somberly his eyes glinting indicating his pleasure to see Prachi at her wits end.

Part 53
"Mr Milind Mishra aapkey guests aapka wait ker rahey hain" the manager had ushered Milind to their table, being seated facing the door Shashank had seen Milind make his way towards them. In a split second he had dropped the fork and had held Prachi's hand in his own feigning concern. Milind had joined them to see Shashank place tender kisses on Prachi's bleeding palm as she sat there very much perplexed at Shashank's change of behaviour. "Kiya hua Prachi yeh chot kaisey lagi ?" he had asked immediately taking her hand from Shashank in his own examining the wounds "Tuu kiya ker rahi thi yahaan?" he had questioned again agitated on seeing her hurt. "Bas woh fork per haath lag gaya shayad zyaada tez tha" she had explained wiping away tears that had fast spilled on her cheeks. Somehow Milind had a sense of deep rooted hatred creep in him as he stared at Shashank visibly unmoved. He felt like boxing his ears there and then how dare he even touch Prachi, he wondered if him kissing Prachi was just an act on his part. If he loved Prachi as much as he claimed he did then why did he not care about her pain or the fact that she certainly seemed unwell rather he played with his napkin trying to make a boat out of it. "I'm sure Mr Shashank takleef to buhut ho rahi hogi aapko apni fiance kii haalat dekh ker" Milind had taunted him. "Hairat hai aap ab tak yahaan bethey hain bandage tak ka intizaam nahin kiya aapney. Kuch nahin to napkin hii baandh detey khoon to ruk jaata I'm sure hotel management aapko charge nahin kertey.... laundry key liye" he had admonished Shashank. The last sentence delivered in a cutting tone that had caused Shashank to frown, his forehead creased as he cocked his eyebrows in surprise. Milind had soaked a napkin in water from the crystal tumbler placed on the table and had dabbed it on Prachi's palm wiping the wounds with utmost care. Concern evident in the way he softly blew on it to ease the pain. "Buhut dard ho raha hai Prachi?" he had asked placing his palm against her wet cheek thumbing the remnants of her tears that had soaked the front of her saree. "First aid to aap ker hii chukey hain..... pati jo thehrey ... naqli hii sahi" Shashank had spat out quite unhappy with the turn of events he had not expected Milind to show up at lunch spoiling the fun he was having at Prachi's expense . "Mr Saxenna I'm leaving wife or not she's very much my responsibility as long as she's under my roof.... chalo Prachi. " Saying so Milind had picked up Prachi in his arms as she snuggled close to his welcoming warmth. The afternoon was one big disaster and she was happy to be going home at last. The valet had brought Milind's car to the front and had opened the side door to allow Milind to seat Prachi. He was aware of the countless eyes that had lifted in his direction some in awe, others in admiration afterall it wasn't everyday a business tycoon sauntered through a renowned restaurant with his wife nestled in his arms. Shashank had narrowed his eyes in solicitude Milind was Prachi's raw nerve if he could somehow put his foot on it she'd be at his feet. Hmm he had mused 'chalo Prachi ab issey tumharey tareeqey sey kheleingey.... pyaar sey...' he had chuckled afterall love was the sole weakness Prachi had.

Milind had studied Prachi scrutinizing every move, carefully assessing her she certainly did not seem elated on meeting Shashank rather it appeared as if she'd just seen a ghost. He noticed how her fingers trembled while winding her saree's end around them how she kept biting her lip in an attempt to keep her tears at bay. How she resisted turning in his direction though her eyes kept flinching at every move he made. Something was wrong but what was it....Was this the way lovers met.... certainly not. He had found neither Shashank nor Prachi enthusiastic about this whole encounter and wondered if he had actually made a grave mistake by allowing him to meet her for lunch at all. "Aap ney to kaha tha aap aayeingey lunch per" Prachi had finally found the need to question looking at him through red veined eyes. Milind was stumped to see her stare at him accusingly it seemed as if he had killed some part of her mercilessly yet unknowingly and now it bled to silent death. "Woh main.... meeting thi Prachi.... waisey bhi mujhey laga tuu itney waqt baad Shashank sey mil rahi hai disturb kerna sahi nahin hoga" he had explained haltingly his eyes rivetted to the long line of cars that snaked before his Kompressor. "Pucha kyun nahin mujh sey?" she had complained her moist voice resonant amidst the hum drum of the enveloping traffic and for once Milind sat speechless. Ofcourse who had he been to make decisions on her behalf she was entitled to her own free will and he had trespassed her territory this time. He had no right not then, not now.... but he would he promised himself letting his eyes wander back to her fragile form and that would be soon. He shifted gears uncomfortably gunning the engine maintaining silence all the way back home while she purposely avoided catching his eye again. Ever since her confrontation with Shashank Prachi had become guarded she would often spend hours on end confined within her room hugging Preeti close to her. The mere thought of having someone to call her own, someone to love and cherish eased her mind a bit. She had not confided to anyone about Shashank's renascence with it's full vigor in her life. She could not tell her mother who was taken up mostly caring for her daadi. She'd undergone her surgery and had been shifted back home. Milind had although appointed a nurse for the same purpose but Premlata wouldn't leave her mother in law's side such was the bond they shared, one that did not need words. Daadi's recovery wasn't a speedy one either, age had hampered the process to revitalization. Her body was weakened with the inflictions time had imposed on her heart and mind, she had lost the will to live and instilling love for life in her debilitated form again was a tough task for Premlata.
Milind could simply not understand what had happened to Prachi she seemed to have turned in a recluse shunning any sort of contact with the outside world. Even while they sat in their room together she'd avoid speaking to him entangling herself with Preeti or some measly chore. If Milind tried to attempt conversing she'd leave abruptly or stay mum the situation was getting worse day by day and Milind realized that day at the hotel something had gone very very wrong. For Prachi it seemed as if life held no meaning it was a fruitless exercise she undertook each day of breathing in and out, moving without any recognition of thought time or space. She had closed herself to any external thought or notion trying hard to seclude herself detach herself from the world she loved, it was necessary she had consoled her heart. She had to leave and it wouldn't help if she kept on holding to the invisible threads of love, compassion and commitment. Love for Milind and everything that was linked to him, compassion for her family and lastly the commitment she had undertaken to raise Preeti as her own, to make Milind her's one day. All those were distant propositions, dreams she had dreamt in a different existence. Right now she needed to be strong to let her heart feed off the last remnants of love she had taken care to conceal in the very bottom of it. Milind had watched as Prachi fiddled around with the spaghetti not attempting to consume any of the contents on her plate, dinner as usual was a family affair. Premlata fed Preeti pieces of the chicken koftas Prachi had prepared for Milind, she knew he loved them she may have been hurt by his inability to read into her feelings for him but she was confident he would never endanger her purposely. It was evident Shashank had manipulated Milind's honest nature making him believe he had no right on Prachi as she was set to be betrothed to him. Ever since they had met Shashank had been struggling to contact her she had obviously shunned all his advances making him go wild with fury, finally he'd asked Sapna to call Prachi up. Sapna had been perturbed when Shashank had asked her to call Prachi up why did he hound Prachi so? What was it that she held which was of such importance to Shashank. Somehow Sapna was assured that day it wasn't just property Prachi held it was her beauty that enthralled Shashank and for the first time she felt as if all her time spent with him was a farce a mere hoax. Prachi had a certain hold over him that he had not been able to shrug off even after such a long time, he desired her much more than that he wanted to own her.
Milind had walked in his darkened bedroom he could make out Prachi's silhoutte huddled on a corner of the massive bed, she seemed to have struck a companionship with solitude lately a trait he didn't approve of much. "Prachi" he had called out flipping the lights open. Her eyes were bloodshot and face wet he realized she'd been crying she'd quickly wiped away the remains of any signs of her silent activity and had got up from her place making a beeline for the door when he'd caught her mid way. "Kyun bhaag rahi hai mujh sey aakhir kiya hua hai mujhey kuch batati kyun nahin" he was tired, frustrated rather her silence had him maddened and tonight he'd make her talk. "Ab bhi puch rahey hain mujh sey kiya hua hai?" she had questioned in a moist tone fixing her dewy eyes on his handsome face which certainly depicted his cluelessness on the entire issue. "Or waisey bhi ab mujh per aapka koi haq nahin, mujh sey chutkara chahiye tha to pehley hii bata detey main chali jaati Shashank key paas" she had lamented outraged at his secrecy on the lunch date. "To kiya kerta main apna wajood, apni zimmedaarian or pareshanian tujh per thop deta? Itna swarthi main kaisey ban jaata Prachi?" he had slided his arm around her waist pulling her close to him explaining his trepidation. She obviously was in no mood of being cajoled and had pulled away distancing herself from him in haste. "Choriye mujhey" she had murmured turning to the door again when he had held her by her arm firmly this time. "Merey liye teri khushi sab sey zyaada maainey rakhti hai Prachi, mujhey laga tuu Shashank sey pyaar kerti hai uss key saath khush raheygi, per ab nahin lagta" he had held her face in his hands love brimming in his coal black eyes. Tears had made their way through her eyes and now fell on his palms she would not dare look at him afraid that he might just read the truth in them. "Prachi kiya tuu Shashank sey pyaar kerti hai?' Milind had finally spoken what had been resonating in his heart for long, Prachi realized she could not lie to him but there was no other way. If she told him the truth he'd make sure Shashank never breathed again and the last thing she wanted was him being convicted. He'd already been through his share of miseries she couldn't let history repeat itself in his case too. "Haan" she had breathed placing her hands on his after it felt as if eons had passed and that was probably not the answer Milind had been expecting. How could he read her wrong he knew her, had felt her, understood her, she was lying. "Acha!" he had sneered making her lift her eyes to him fearfully, "Pyaar kerti hai Shashank sey tuu, haan.... bol pyaar kerti hai uss sey" he had held her by her shoulders shaking her forcefully. He was not going to stand there watch her fib to him enough was enough yes he'd been stupid didn't mean she would torture him for it.
"Haan pyaar kerti huun main Shashank sey jee nahin sakti uskey bina... suna aap ney." Prachi had screamed her eyes shut tightly she sobbed hysterically her body trembling why the revelation and why now. Why could he not have asked her earlier when there was no Shashank between them. "To yeh meri aankhon main dekh ker kyun nahin bolti?" Milind had questioned making her snap her eyes open in wonder he knew she was lying. His face was grim, his jaw clenched and his rigid hold on her interpreted his anger which he had found hard to leash then. "Theek hai" he had stated watching her stand there stoned feigning ignorance to his condition there was another way. Taking her hand in his own he had placed it on his own head. "Meri qasam kha ker bol Shashank sey pyaar kerti hai uskey paas jaana chahti hai.... bol Prachi. Mujhey apni zindagi ki parwah nahin lekin terey sach ki hai. Kha meri qasam" and Prachi had stared at him as if she'd been asked to walk on hot coals. How could she endanger his life, she couldn't, she wouldn't she'd pulled her hand away as quick as lightning turning away from him. "Mujhey koi qasam khaaney kii zarurat nahin" she had replied staidly steeling herself against his piercing gaze. "Yeh sach main jhutla nahin sakti" she hoped she could make him believe the impossible though she had realized it would be a futile attempt he knew her inside out. Her fingers trembled and she had balled her hands to stop them from giving her away, wiping away her tears she had turned to face him forcing herself to meet his accusing stare . "Sach kiya hai main achi tarah jaanta huun" he had held her close wrapping his arms around her leaving no room for flight on her part, he could feel her give in after the initial struggle as she clung on to him. Her shoulders sagged as she allowed him to carry on with his advances "Sach yeh hai keh main tujh sey pyaar kerta huun" he placed a tender kiss on her forehead, "sach yeh hai keh tuu bhi mujh sey pyaar kerti hai". His lips had travelled down to her swollen eye lids as he kissed them softly she could feel her tears running free again. How long had she waited for his confession she'd lost track of time on that, it had seemed forever to her. She stifled a sob clutching fistfuls of his kurta pressing close to him why was fate so cruel she had wondered why had it taken him so long to recognize his feelings for her. "Or eik sach yeh bhi hai keh main kisi uluu key pathey ko tujhey mujh sey duur nahin ley jaaney duunga phir chahey jaan kyun na chali jaaye" he had vowed breathing close to her pressing his lips to her hot cheek. "Milind" Prachi had hiccuped leaning against him letting him kiss her hair with love as he stroked her face with the back of his fingers. She loved him he knew it and her love was evident in the manner she had called him crying out to him, but there was something that witheld her confession, he'd get to the bottom of it. She was his not Shashank's he wouldn't let go of her not in a million years picking her up in his arms he had placed her on the bed watching her hiccup even as she slept later on. Something was wrong he had to figure it out before she was snatched away from him and there'd be nothing left for him to save.

Part 54

"Mr Sabarwal aapsey eik bandey kii information nahin nikali gayi ab tak aur aap apney aap ko private detective kehtey hain. Kis liye dey raha huun main aapki fees iss liye na keh mujhey uss aadmi key baarey main sab kuch jaanna hai. I bloody well know how much you'r charging me and I must tell you agar mera kaam parson tak nahin hua to na aapki detective agency raheygi na aapka naam. Is that clear?" Milind had barked in his cell before letting the man on the other end put together a hasty apology clicking it shut in disgust. It irritated him to think that the more he desired to be rid of the disease named Shashank the more his intentions and motives regarding Prachi remained unclear to him. The detective Ali had hired had not been able to pull up anything except for his basics Milind knew Shashank and Prachi had attended the same college and that Prachi's good for nothing brother Alaap was Shashank's bosom friend. He also knew Shashank ran a drug business in Italy but apart from that there was nothing on him that would explain his extreme interest in Prachi it was clear he did not love her. Milind had neither seen his eyes sparkle on Prachi's mention or any other such sign that would express his desire for Prachi, all he had noticed was an evil glint in his green eyes he needed her yes but that was all it was simply physical. He could differentiate between lust and genuine love what Shashank harboured for Prachi was certainly not the latter. Just the thought of him touching Prachi killed Milind, his blood boiled whenever he recollected him planting kisses on Prachi's hand. Right now too he paced the room tirelessly it was four in the morning he wasn't aware of the time in any case the reason he had dialled a very somnolent Sabarwal in agitation he needed answers and he needed them that instant. Though he hadn't slept all night his eyes refused to register drowsiness it was as if he'd been suddenly injected with excessive amounts of caffeine. In the later part of the night Prachi's hiccups had subsided she had sought solace in Milind's gentle touch who had kept her close carressing her face tenderly every now and then. He wished he could stop her from self destruction and finishing off any chances they had of living together as a perfect family.
For the first time in his life Milind had felt the need to pray, leaving her sleeping he had walked noiselessly downstairs to the small temple situated in a corner of the hall. The lamps surrounding the garlanded gold plated idols burnt profusely, he knew Prachi was a devout believer. He had witnessed her clasp her hands together standing mutely infront of them seeking peace for her troubled heart many a times. Closing his eyes joining his hands he had pulled in a deep breath it was difficult having to ask specially from someone he had no hope in but he knew if Prachi had been in his stead she'd have done the same for him. Opening his eyes again he felt a certain calm settle over him "Mujhey pata nahin duaa kaisey maangtey hain is liye keh saala aaj tak kuch maanga hii nahin...... tum sey. Prachi kehti hai tum buhut achey ho logon kii suntey ho" his voice though supressed had traces of irritation in it. "Achey ho to phir achey logon key saath hii bura kyun kertey ho?" he had questioned though as expected the reply was a deafening silence. "Main Prachi ko buhut chahta huun" his eyes now rested on the glowing figures afront," jaanta huun tuu bhi jaanta hai isi liye shayad ussey itni takleef dey raha hai, per merey hissey key dukh ussey kyun dey raha hai? Tera problem to merey sey haina, main saala edha huun kabhi pooja nahin kerta tujh sey kuch maangta nahin.... per Prachi uss ka kiya qasur hai?" It was clear he regarded the entire ordeal of Prachi going through misery as highly unfair and sadistic. "Woh to har pal tujhey yaad kerti hai, arey din raat subah shaam tera naam ley ley ker jeeti hai phir kyun ussey khushi nahin deta" his exasperation evident from the manner of speech. "Tuu ney mujh sey mera har sapna cheen liya main ney koi shikayat nahin kii per Prachi key sapney tuut jayein yeh main bardaasht nahin kerunga. Or uss Shashank kii to main usse honey nahin duunga" he had warned threateningly he actually had wanted to be clear on his future endeavours, get it off his chest why though was inexplicable. "Main apney liye kuch nahin chahta bas Prachi ko uski khushian dey dey" his voice had lowered now, eyes hazy "Or uskey saarey ghum mujhey dey dey." He hadn't known how long he had stood there chanting the same pleas over and over again he desperately needed assurance though prayers were the last thing on his mind but he had been forced to give in for her. He could do anything to keep her happy and this was just self derogation a small price to pay in his opinion. If watching him stand there beg for her happiness made HIM think He'd won well then let him gloat over it, Prachi's smiles were worth far more than his pride.
He had been drawn back to the present by a slight rustle beside him he opened his weary eyes to see Premlata stand next to him. The first rays of the growing sun had seeped through the doorway making him realize it was dawn. "Aaj itni subah subah..... pooja..." she had inquired surprised to see him there dishevelled and worn out. "Kuch maangna tha..... suna tha sachey mann sey maango to mil jata hai" he had smiled satirically turning to face her. "Jaantey ho Milind insaan sab sey zyaada kab majbuur hota hai, jab uska koi apna takleef main ho" Premlata had smiled patting his cheek lovingly. "Batao kiya hua kyun pareshaan ho?" she had questioned. "Maa aapko yaqeen hain agar saaf mann sey kuch maanga jaaye or woh bhi kisi apney key liye to mil jaata hai?" he had counterquestioned hope shining in his deep eyes. Premlata was taken aback by his sudden query how could she explain to him that all she'd ever asked God was others happiness. Never her own but her prayers still had a long way to go she though could not disparage his newfound faith in the Almighty. "Haan" she had managed braving a smile "agar apnon key liye maanga jaaye to zarur duaaein qubul ho jaati hain magar uss key liye vishvaas kii zarurat hoti hai" she had explained wisely. "Waisa vishwaas jaisey Prachi kerti hai?" his belief in Prachi's faith was quite pleasing and this time Premlata's reply was prompt. "Haan waisa vishwaas jaisa Prachi kerti hai inn per" turning to him she had added "... tum per. Tumm uski zindagi ho Milind agar bhagwaan key baad usney kisi sey sacha prem or kisi per anth vishwaas kiya hai to woh tum ho. Uska yeh yaqeen or pyaar hamesha banaye rakhna." Milind had watched mutely as Premlata had then performed her morning prayers hoping against hopes that his had been granted approval by HIM.
Prachi's head throbbed furiously she had scanned the room to find it empty the shower was not running meaning he wasn't there either. Getting out of bed she had reached the windows drawing back the lace curtains she filled her lungs with the fresh morning air that blew gently free and welcoming. She'd have stayed there longer letting herself be immersed in observing the early morning activities of a sparrow had she not heard Milind enter the room. She was astonished to see him brandishing a tea tray complete with breakfast items, stepping forward she had helped him set them on the bed. "Yeh sab... mera matlab hai aap kyun laaye main aa jaati abhi" she was certainly taken aback by this gesture on his part. "Tuu roz merey liye chai laati hai mainey kabhi sawaal kiya?" he had smiled light heartedly "aaj merey haath ki bani chai pii ley" he had poured out a cup to her. Settling on the bed beside him Prachi had put the steaming liquid to her lips downing it contentedly. "Kaisi hai?" Milind had probed obviously elated at his primary attempt being a sure success gauging by her face which refused to give away any negative vibe. "Buhut achi hai" Prachi had smiled genuinely touched by his act, deeming it fit for consumption he had poured out a cup for himself too when Prachi had hastily taken it from him. "Milind itni achi hai yeh main saari pii luun?" she had questioned him trying to keep him from tasting it. "Per mainey to buhut saari banai hai hum dono pii leingey phir bhi bach jayegi" he had informed her sheepishly and Prachi had closed her eyes in anguish.... God now he'd drink it. As soon as Milind had taken the first sip his eyes had lifted to Prachi's guilty face setting his cup back in the tray he had inquired quizzically. "Bataya kyun nahin shakar ki jagah namak dala hai, itni karwai zeher pii rahi thi kab sey" he had complained. "Bata deti to aapka dil tuut jaata, aap ney pehli baar itney pyaar sey banayi thi or phir shakar waali chai to roz peeti huun main, aaj pehli dafa namak waali chai pii hai........ buhut achi bani hai" she had raised his spirits smiling serenely at him. Considering it a perfect opportunity Milind had decided to broach the subject he had given much thought to the previous night. "Prachi agley haftey humarey Delhi waaley hotel ka inauguration hai. Tuu ney bhi uss per itni mehnat kii hai iss liye main chahta huun tuu merey saath ho wahaan, mujhey acha lageyga." Chewing dainitily on a sandwich Prachi had been jolted out of her pleasant dream world ofcourse there was the inauguration, how could she have forgotten about it. Fidgeting with the cucumber wedges in the sandwich she had tried to wheedle her way out of his request. "Milind main chalti per Soumya ka phone aaya tha ussey Puna main kuch kaam hai mera jaana zaruri hai."
Milind noticed her voice was jittery and pace slow she was lying again it infuriated him to think that she simply was not giving him any opportunity to share her qualms or fears. Her outburst the previous night had though hinted to him that pushing her to communication would only make her more distant. He'd have to be very careful if he needed to get to the bottom of this mess. Taking a long look at her downcast eyes he had let out a heavy breath "Jaisey teri marzi" he had remarked defeatedly saying so he had cleared the crockery piling it in the tray. Prachi felt aweful she knew she'd broken his heart but she was left with no other option. If she accompanied him to the party Shashank would run her pictures there and that was something that was just not acceptable her. This was Milind's moment of glory he'd toiled hard for it and now when he had finally achieved it she couldn't destroy it for her own selfish desires. Watching him stand up to leave she'd been gripped with remorse "Milind main" she had tried to explain but the words had choked up halfway. Milind had looked at her chide herself inwardly blinking hard her fingers digging in her china cup. Placing his index finger on her full lips he'd caused her to stare at him startled her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Kuch kehney kii zarurat nahin .... or main khafa nahin tujh sey" he had raised her face cupping it gently in his palm before gracing her forehead with a passionate kiss. Prachi had sat motionless on the bed even after Miind had been long gone her heart overflowed with love for him. She cried bitterly burying her face in the soft sheets "Main kiya karun Milind main kiya karun Shashank mujhey jeeney nahin dega or main apney saath aapko dukhi nahin ker sakti. Shayad humara saath itna hii likha tha" she had mourned the unfair ways of providence which was hell bent to separate her from the one man she worshipped. She could see with each passing moment his amour for her deepened and she feared if he did come to find out about Shashank's vicious deeds the consequences would be rather grave. She had to act fast she needed to know what Shashank required in exchange for his silence the sooner she got over with it the better for all of them. Wiping away her careless tears she had punched the numbers to his residence in her cell it was amazing even after such a long time she recalled the digits with perfect clarity. Somethings never fade from memory they haunt you till your death bed and for Prachi Shashank was one of them.

"Prachi Prachi Prachi...." Shashank had teased her pleased at his victory he knew she'd give in it was only a matter of time before she would realize he'd destroy her sweet little dream world without sparing a second thought to it. "Kiya chahtey ho mujh sey Shashank?" Prachi had asked directly she was done playing hide and seek with him. "Eik raat merey farmhouse per.... bas tum meri ho jao or tumhara naqli pati azaad" he had snarled viciously. Prachi could hear him breath ferociously on the other end, he was a wild beast who should've been hunted down long back. "Kab?" Prachi had inquired again closing her eyes trying to block out the horror of her previous encounter with him that seemed to pervade her senses each time she heard his name. "Kal" he had replied smiling, Prachi could picture his lips curling in a cruel grin why shouldn't he celebrate she had thought wretchedly he had won the battle, evil always prevailed over good. But this time the story would be different true it was Shashank who'd been writing it till now but henceforth it would have a different author. "Kal nahin agley haftey jis raat Milind key hotel ka inauguration hoga us raat" she had laid her conditions. "Or haan Shashank mujhey apney saarey photographs chahhiyein, negatives key saath" she had elaborated further. "Dekhtey hain Prachi tum kiya kiya paati ho uss raat" he had chuckled his voice crackling in elation. "Main kuch paun na paun Shashank per vaada kerti huun kisi or sey kuch bhi paaney laiq nahin chorungi tumhain" Prachi had vowed silently. The deal was done the time set that was the only way she could save Milind's inauguration from turning into a major media disaster. Cutting the call Prachi had dialled another number "Hello doctor Deepa, this is Mrs Mishra" she had tried to keep her voice cheerful though the truth was she wanted to scream at the top of her voice. She was throwing her life away and there was simply no alternative solution to it, asking the doctor for the necessary information Prachi had bid her farewell.
As she stood there reminiscing each moment spent in her room with Milind she had finally given in to her inner turmoil that had found it's way through her eyes as the harsh reality of her prodigious loss hit her with full force. She howled dejectedly like an animal in pain, her knees buckled and she slid to the floor letting the marble provide her with the much needed inclemency. It was too late to save herself she was trapped like a fly in a spider's web he had beaten her at his game, it felt as if all she could do was cry forever and she had for a very long time before losing conciousness altogether. She had not known though that staying on the floor had caused her muscles to benumb she had not known too that Milind had returned halfway from his way to the office as he had forgotten an important file home. The moment he saw her curled in a ball on the floor his sixth sense had shot an alarm to his brain "Prachi... Prachi!!" he had yelled shaking her by her shoulder but Prachi had been overcome with exhaustion one that penetrated deep within her soul and now her brain had refused to acknowledge any sensation of any sort. "Prachi ... Prachi aankhain khol please Prachi" Milind had desperately tried to awaken her limp form, he had gently lifted her placing her on the bed God why was this happening to her she didn't deserve this, any of it. The next hour was hazy her mother his father they kept saying things his brain wouldn't register. Bua was interrogating him someone had called the doctor but he had not recognized or acceded any of the events all he could focus on was Prachi who it seemed had turned to stone. The doctor had administered her a sedative "She's very distressed Mr Mishra" he had informed a tormented Milind. "I've written the medication the syrup after two hours and the pills after she awakens, don't worry she'll be fine" he had squeezed his hand reassuringly shaking it before leaving. "Papa Mumma bukhaal?" Preeti had pottered upto him and he had filled her in his strong arms her eyes wide with concern. Lately she'd been spending less time with her mother and it troubled her to see that she was simply lying there unresponsive and silent. Her small but sharp brain had ruled out fever to be the reason for her sickly condition having contracted it quite a few times herself. A tear had escaped Milind's eye and Preeti had kissed him with love "Nayi Papa" she had shaken her curly head wiping away his tear immediately. It was a relief in itself that Preeti had become extremely familiar with the other members of the family and needless to say was now looked after by them Prachi having lost all sense and sensibility lately. "Papa mumma kissi?" Preeti had inquired and Milind had taken her to the bed lowering her so that she was level enough to kiss her slumbering mother on her cheek. He knew Preeti missed her mother but right now Prachi was in no condition to look after her he had then handed her to Premlata. "Kiya kaha doctor ney?" she had questioned him restlessly "Kuch nahin maa bas viral bukhar hai mausam badla hai iss liye" he had lied avoiding her knowing gaze.
"Milind" Prachi had whispered semiconciously even though she was drugged her mind was full aware of his existence near her. "Main huun na yahaan Prachi" he had murmured softly kissing her hand. Prachi had opened her eyes to see him sit close to her he was still in his suit which indicated he'd not left her side since he'd found her in that position that morning. The evening shadows fell long and dark he had spent his whole day beside her and now it was night. "Ab kaisi tabiyat hai?" he had inquired putting away the cold compress he had placed on her burning forehead minutes earlier. A tear had slid down her temple watching him that way weary and distraught it appeared as if he hadn't slept in a very long time. "Buhut tang kerti huun na aapko Milind" she had remarked sadly. "Haan buhut" Milind had assented smiling weakly watching her in despair smoothing her hair lovingly. It suddenly occured to Prachi that this may be the last time she could ever be so close to him. She stood to lose everything in a very short time "Milind" she had murmured again longingly this time he was surprised to see her that way. Nonetheless he had complied holding her in his arms he let her place her hands on his face trace each contour passionately letting her smooth silkiness carress his skin with the utmost of care. "Prachi" he had whispered when she had shushed him placing her finger on his lips indicating the silence to prolong. She pulled his face closer and had proceeded to plant soft kisses on his cheek, sobbing mutely she continued to kiss his nose his eyes and lastly his lips. Milind had always longed for this moment when she'd accept him willingly and provide him the right on her but tonight when that moment had finally arrived it was filled with melancholy. When her supple lips had touched his full ones he was overcome with desire to reciprocate with fervour but there was this distinct feeling of dysphoria that rang clear when their lips had met. It was as if Prachi had wanted to feel each part of him afraid that he might not remain there for long and he had let her carry on at her free will which though was rather short lived.
He wondered why he suddenly felt the need to hold her so very close maybe because he wanted to make her believe he would remain there by her side forever. He had then hugged her sensing her bury her face in his chest Prachi had not cared about anything else not even of what he would make of her bold actions she realized words were not required to convey her emotions. She desired him and was not prepared to let go, that night was all that she had and so they had stayed that way till both had nodded off to sleep Prachi enveloped snugly in his tender embrace. The rest of the week seemed to have flown Milind had promised himself that after he had finished off with the hotel drama in Delhi he'd marry her for good Shashank or no Shashank he was not taking any chances this time. She loved him he knew that whether she confessed or not hardly mattered he just needed to take her in his arms look in her eyes and ask her to marry him and he knew she'd assent. Unknown to him Prachi had formed other plans she had received her parcel from Dr Deepa and had thanked her for her help. Had the poor doctor known what her help would cost Prachi she'd never had consented in the first place but Prachi had been thoughtful enough to conceal her need from her too. She stared at the contents in the parcel for long sighing as she finally hid it in a remote corner of the room. The inauguration was tomorrow she still had to pack Milind's bags for his overnight stay in Delhi the next day. That would give her ample time to get rid of Shashank forever though how she would get about it was still unknown to her but it was clear after tomorrow she would be free of him. Hopefully in time Milind and their family too would consider this the best possible means of freedom, provided they forgave her for what she was about to do in the first place.
"Shashank tum ney mera istimaal kiya hai aaj tak jo tum kehtey rahey woh sab jhoot tha?" Sapna had shrieked in fury his real self finally having been exposed to her. She'd never have known about his horrific plans for Prachi or the equally tormentous past they shared had he not been drunk heavily. They had decided to spend the night at his apartment Sapna had been longing to tell him the news that he was going to be a father in exactly seven months she was pregnant. Shashank though was in no mood for her ramblings he was over the moon having succeeded in trapping Prachi and in a bout of drunken madness he had confessed to all his criminal acts. Right from his college days to Prachi's near rape, Inder's demise, his attempts at tracing her and now the exaltation of having conquered her . Sapna had felt as if she'd been thrown in the deepest pits of hell with no chance of redemption. She hated herself, loathed each moment spent with a tyrant like him "Kyun kiya Shashank kyun kiya.... kiya kami reh gayi thii merey pyaar main.... kyun uss ki zindagi barbaad kerney per tuley ho?" her anger had been replaced by sorrow. She had thought he loved her and desired her equally but it all been his elaborate game it was the way he played it, he was worse than satan himself. "Jawab do Shashank" she had caught him roughly by his collar shaking his muscular form. "Sharam nahin aayi tumhain uskey saath aisi ghatia harkat kertey huey sirf is liye keh us ney tumhain thappar maara tha...... main hoti to jaan ley leti tumhari" she had sneered mad with grief. He had not only used Sapna to reach Prachi he had also made her commit a heinous crime unknown to her. It was because of Sapna's phone call that Prachi had been forced to think over the deal with him. Had she not called the innocent woman wouldn't have fallen for his malicious designs. "Bakwaas band kero apni" Shashank had barked tonelessly freeing himself off her hold he had pushed her away swaying dangerously.
He had drunk far too much that night which was fortunate enough a condition for Sapna who had promised herself to avenge that iniquitous man for his evil deeds, but first she had to secure Prachi's safety. She had to find those pictures which Shashank had converted to a CD if she managed to whisk them away Prachi would never have to come to him again. Wiping away her tears she had tried to brush past him but he was quicker than her catching her by her arm he had pulled her to him ruthlessly. "Kahaan jaa rahi hai meri sachai bataney jaa rahi hai uss Milind Mishra ko, ya police ko?" he had laughed hysterically. "Na chanda aisi ghalati nahin kerunga main, eik baar eik titli ur gayi thi ab tujhey nahin urney duunga...." pinning her to the wall he wrapped his fingers around her neck and squeezed hard. "Shashank choro mujhey" Sapna had tried to scream that was soon stifled out by the pressure he was exherting on her larynx. Unlike Shashank's past victims Sapna was quick minded she realized if she were to escape she'd have to act as she had passed out. As difficult as it was Sapna had loosened her grip on his arms and had rolled her head forward holding her breath still. "Mar gayi saali" Shashank had scoffed contentedly letting her drop to the floor delivering her a couple of hard kicks which Sapna had borne mutely. There was too much at stake even a whimper could destroy any remote possibility of escape. Shashank had contrary to Sapna's hopes not stayed in his apartment after treating her like a football in a soccer match he had left the place locking it behind him. Wincing with pain battered and bruised Sapna had cried in solitude this was her penance for all the wrong she had done this was bound to happen. In her pride she'd forgotten she was but a mere human and all humans err it was destined. What cut her was the fact that she had loved a monster who hadn't even known the definition of the word love in it's true sense. She understood she was doomed but she could not let Prachi advance towards a similar fate. She had to stop her with a resurgent determination she had managed to get on her feet and now to find that cd...... it was going to be a very long night.

Part 56

"Tuu meri adhuri pyaas pyaas
Tuu aa gayi man ko raas raas
Ab to tuu aa jaa paas paas... hai guzarish
Hai haal to dil ka tang tang
Tuu rang ja merey rang rang
Bas chalna merey sang sang... hai guzarish
Keh dey tuu haan to zindagi jharnon sey chuut key hanseygi
Moti hongey moti raah main"

Aamir Khan stood with his arms out stretched towards his lady love Milind was ready to depart for Delhi and Prachi was getting his things ready. Preeti sat with Naintara watching her favourite song she had fallen in love with it the moment it was screened and insisted on watching it every time it was aired. The song was mellifluous and resonated in the otherwise empty hallway. Milind could not help but rest his eyes on Prachi who looked ethereal even in her simple form. Lately her face had lost it's trademark smile and was marked with worry evident from the farwaway look her eyes bore. Right now she was making sandwiches for him as he hated inflight food, her hands working deftly her eyes fixed on the contents spread before her.

"Sheeshey key khuwab ley key raaton main chal raha huun takra na jaun kahin
Aasha ki lau hai roshan phir bhi toofan ka darr hai lau bujh na jaye kahin
Bas eik haan ki guzaarish, phir hogi khushion kii baarish.
Tuu meri adhuri pyaas pyaas
Tuu aa gayi man ko raas raas
Ab to tuu aa jaa paas paas... hai guzarish"

Something in those lyrics had caused Prachi to look up at Milind's reticent eyes that followed her every move she had been aware of his gaze on her for long. But had simply decided to ignore it, she couldn't let her resolve weaken now, tonight was the night she had to leave him forever. She could distinguish the longing his eyes reflected it was as if his thoughts had been sung out to her tearing her eyes away from him she tried to concentrate on the task at hand. Finishing her chore she had supervised his bags being placed in his car trunk turning to go back inside, she needed to get away quickly else she might just pour her heart out to him and that would be the last straw. Milind on the contrary had other intentions "Mujhey chorney nahin aayegi airport?" he had questioned her hopefully. "Woh Milind mujhey apni packing bhi kerni hai, aapko der bhi to ho rahi hai" she had twisted her fingers cruelly attempting to concentrate on his expensive leather shoes. The driver had left to freshen up before the long drive and Kaka had gone inside to serve dinner. "Jaanta huun tujhey buhut kaam hai, mujh sey kahin zyaada important" he had murmured disappointedly turning away when she had been compelled to clear his misunderstanding. "Aap to sab sey zyaada important hain Milind" she had whispered, how was she to explain that he was her life only now it wasn't hers anymore she had traded it with the devil for his happiness long back. Milind had held her in his arms causing her to look up at him and for that one moment she'd forgotten everything else besides his deep dark eyes or rather she had chosen to forget everything. Their eyes had met and had locked, undoing the bolts that fastened their hearts letting love flow free. His gaze had dropped to her awaiting lips and for once he had not hesitated before claiming them for his own. He could feel her melt against him pressing her lips lightly savouring their softness on his hot mouth. It was as if the moment had them working on it's own accord all that mattered was there and then, he had sensed her yearning close in as her fingers found refuge in his thick crop of curls. Running them through his hair she had granted him permission to carry on unrestrained tipping her head back slightly he had let his thumb line her jaw cupping her face lifting it ever so gently.

She had not moved even an inch afraid that if she did the magic would vanish closing her eyes content in a very long time she had parted her lips to grant him access. Milind had with drawn then watching her with renewed passion she was his she had accepted it if not verbally then physically the discovery in itself was heart warming. Embracing her amorously he had let her mould within his arms before reaching down again fervently this time taking care not to overwhelm her with his raging torrent of emotions. Prachi had submitted to his wishes she equally desired him herself. After this moment she probably would never see him again and this farewell kiss was the only thing she wanted to remember till her very end. She let him tenderly capture her lips with his own his hands roving free on her exposed back carressing it as delicately as his lips carressed hers. Coaxing her evoking her making her participate with similar intensity he had tasted her that night to her full capacity allowing her to do the same she was sweet and he had been tempting. How long the kiss had lasted was not in question what it had imparted was, he had found hope and she courage which was needed in equal proportions by them. Both had been lost in each other but Milind recognized his limits with her, he still did not hold a moral or religious claim on her and he was ready to wait for that before he finally made her his. Pulling back from her magnetic touch he had smiled, amused, she stood transfixed with eyes closed her hands clutching his jacket tightly. One of her qualities that attracted him to her was her vulnerability while with him she completely immersed herself in him doing as he bid... willingly ofcourse. "Apna khayal rakhna Prachi" Milind had instructed her touching her face with love and she had opened her eyes to return to reality the fantasy was over. She had not answered rather had leaned in grasping on to him for emotional support she had not wanted to cry and still tried her best to avoid the tears but she hadn't succeeded in keeping them at bay. He had felt her heave clung to him and had realized that she was indeed weeping kissing her hair he had smiled. "Eik raat kii hii to baat hai Prachi main kal subeh waapiss aa jaunga or phir tujhey mujh sey kabhi duur nahin rehna pareyga" he intended to get married to her in a private ceremony that very weekend. Prachi was least consoled by his promise she knew he'd keep it but she wouldn't be there to rejoice at his return composing herself she had straightened. "I'm sorry Milind..... ho sakey to mujhey maaf ker dijiye ga" she had apologized through moist eyes trying to commit everything to memory right from his glowing eyes to his rugged cheeks, those plush lips to the blunt nose and that bewitching gaze, while he looked on confused.

"Kyun?" he had questioned watching her closely was something wrong, what was she planning. His mind was suddenly turned off from the trip itself, his heart had this distinct feeling as if it were sinking to depths deeper than any ocean's floor. "Prachi teri flight kab kii hai?" he had suddenly inquired he now remembered Prachi hadn't even bought an airline or train ticket for Pune neither had she discussed it with anyone else besides him. If indeed she were to leave would not her mother be informed about it. Premlata had not mentioned any such activity neither had she confronted Milind on the subject what was more intriguing was that Prachi hadn't even packed any luggage. Something was definitely fishy and he couldn't leave her like that unattended at all. "Woh... main..." Prachi stuttered her face pale her mind a total blank ofcourse she'd lied to him that too without an alibi he'd definitely figure it out. "Woh kiya Prachi" Milind had inquired sternly this time he was through with her false statements. "Meri flight kal kii hai aap khud chor aaiyaga mujhey airport per" she had lied again cursing herself for doing so. She had promised never to keep any secret from him and here she stood doing the exact opposite, she though was not to blame it was all written and sealed long back she was only following the will of the Creator. The driver had returned then and Milind had driven off with a heavy and rather suspicious heart one that wouldn't accept Prachi's assurance as real. As the Kompressor had wound out on the gravel he had looked out of the window to find a doleful Prachi watch him fade away in the distance.

"Damn it yeh darwaza kyun nahin khulta" Sapna had cried aloud in frustration it had been a whole day that she had been imprisoned here. Her wounds ached she was hungry and worn but she refused to accept defeat kicking at the solid oak door with all her might screaming for help. She had thought Shashank would return the following morning to dispose her dead body in his opinion and in the mean time she could search for the photographs. That way she could escape with the photographs and hand them to Prachi before nightfall but all her plans had been washed away as Shashank failed to return. She had tried calling Milind countless times but his cell had been non reachable and when she decided to call Prachi her battery had gone off she had slammed her phone in desperation. She didn't have time even after inspecting every nook and corner of the damned place she'd not been able to locate the CD it was already seven only a few more hours and it would all be finished... "No.... I can't let you ruin Prachi Shashank... I can't!" she had promised herself. Pounding on the heavy oak with renewed vigour she had shouted her throat raw with the exhertion "Koi hai... kholo ... please help" she had hollered with the minimal strength retained by her. She was felt faint and fatigued Shashank's beating had weakened her, her bruises had turned from crimson to a dull brown she was a mess but she hardly cared about herself. It was Prachi her mind kept reminding her of, she poor soul did not need to go through the torture Shashank had planned for her.
"Koi to kholo please" Sapna had slunk down in a heap crying wretchedly it was all her fault Prachi was in this mess she felt as if she were a cheap shot criminal who had helped in assassinating Prachi. How would she set things right tears rolled down her violet streaked cheeks in anguish. Just then she heard a slight knock on the door "Koi hai .... ander koi hai" the man outside had questioned in concern .... "Haan main huun kholo please...." Sapna had scrambled to her feet in elation help was at hand. It turned out that the guard on night duty had heard her pleas for aid and had come upstairs to investigate, luckily for her Shashank's apartment was close to the staircase and was in ear shot of the guard's cabin. Soon Sapna could hear muffled voices outside the door, then she was asked to step away from it a few giant thuds were audible before the door was crashed open by a couple of strong men. Obviously the guard had sought assistance from neighbours residing in the nearby houses, watching her that way a few were taken aback and offered to take her to the hospital but Sapna had declined them gratefully. She had then collected her purse and cell phone thanking the small crowd gathered at the doorway she had sprinted away in haste she had to meet Milind and stop Prachi before it was too late. Hailing an auto she had boarded it and had explained the way to Mishra house clasping her hands in her lap she prayed for the night to be over without any fatalaties, little had she known the night was going to be filled with them.

Prachi had unfolded the brown wrapping of the parcel before pulling out the bottle for examination. She had not found the strength or courage to face Shashank unprotected atleast after doing the deed she'd be at peace knowing she died an honourable death. The pills were a pain reliever Ms Contin- Sustained Release tablets prescribed to her daadi after the surgery to help her deal with the discomfort and infliction caused by the operation. Prachi had read their chemical compositions she knew if consumed in a large quantity morphine had fatal effects on the human body and mind and she had planned to relieve herself of the burden she carried in the name of life. She had mulled on the possibility of confiding in Milind all that was stowed away in her heart many a times but some pretext or the other always held her back. What about the inauguration she would think and even if he knew could he stop Shashank before it was too late. What if Shashank made him believe he indeed had raped her would Milind have accepted her then? These thoughts ran rampant in her mind each time she tried to approach Milind, it wasn't that she thought he'd drive her away from him after learning about her dilemma but she feared she may not hold the same position in his eyes she held prior to confessing the truth. It were these fears that had caused her to clam up on the issue and now she was willing to sacrifice herself at love's altar.
Unscrewing the cap she had tipped a dozen pills her palm, closing her eyes tightly she had pictured Milind for one last time the way he had looked at her after they had shared that passionate and memorable kiss. Putting her palm to her mouth she had stuffed them all in it taking care not to chew them she had washed them down with half a jug of water. She knew the effects would start showing in around a quarter of an hour since the tablets hadn't been chewed it would take them longer to react enough time to finish off that black mark in the name of a man. Picking up her purse she had exited her room turning back she had cast a long sad look at it. Brushing away the tears that had spilled on her cheeks mercilessly she had scurried forward everything was over now and after she destroyed the CD containing her pictures she would be free forever. Seating herself in the Camry she had instructed the driver to take her to the deserted farmhouse on the outskirts of Mumbaii, closing her eyes she lay her head back against the leather head rest in the cool car. She had not met anyone on her way to doom neither her mother, nor Preeti she knew she would not have been able to carry on with the feat had she even such as glanced at them and then all would have been lost. As the car slipped in the shadows an auto rickshaw had sputtered to a stop in front of the black iron gates and Sapna had stepped out in haste "Hope I'm not too late" she had muttered paying the driver the fare.

Part 57

As Milind drove off in the quiet stillness of the black night his mind remained vigil his chin resting on his propped hand he frowned in confusion. Why did Prachi apologize and for what, what did she intend to do? Was she really going to Pune to Soumya? he pulled out his wallet and flipped it open to see Prachi smile back at him. "Kyun main tujhey samajh nahin paata Prachi" he had complained running a finger over her glossy contours and then suddenly as if newly enlightened an ingenuous thought had struck him. Fishing out his mobile from his pants he quickly searched the phonebook for Soumya's number. He remembered feeding it in a couple of days back since he had to inform her on her grand mother's operation and the impending circumstances. Dialing her number he heard the ring go clear thrice chiding himself for not thinking about it earlier. "Jiju" she had immediately recognized his voice and had addressed him pleasantly. After exchanging pleasantries he had broached the subject "Soumya kal tum Prachi ko leney airport jaa rahi ho?" he had questioned cautiously careful not to arouse suspicion. "Kyun kiya dii Puna aa rahi hai?" Soumya had inquired light heartedly it had been quite some time that she had met her sister. They had shared a very wonderful bond prior to the string of mishaps that had ensued after her father had breathed her last. Milind had bolted upright startled what was Soumya talking about did she not know Prachi was supposed to come meet her the next day, how could she be so ignorant. Impulsively he felt extremely claustrophobic in the air conditioned luxury of his Kompressor. "Soumya usney tumhain bataya nahin woh kal aa rahi hai?" Milind had questioned perplexed his thoughts going hay wire was this another of Prachi's white lies. "Jiju agar unhon ney aana hota to mujhey zarur batati kyunki mainey unn sey Mumbaii sey merey puraney college ka leaving certificate laaney ko kaha tha. Or woh ussey laaney key liye mujh sey mera enrollment number zarur puchti, uskey bina to woh mileyga nahin. Meri to eik hafta pehley hii baat hui thi unhoney kaha tha woh by post bhijwa deingey abhi aaney ka unka mann nahin". The news had left Milind as desperate and frantic as a fish caught in a net "Driver gari ghumao" he had told the puzzled man who had immediately assented to his command making a U turn from the next signal.

"Madhu please mujhey Ali ka number dey do, waqt buhut kam hai" Sapna had pleaded in the mouthpiece at the phone booth. "Sapna main personal information nahin dey sakti tum jaanti ho" Madhu had replied coldly. Sapna's reputation wasn't a very alluring one and Madhu suspected her of hatching another plot hampering Prachi's relationship with Milind in the process. Why in the world would she want Milind's best friend's number or address as far as Madhu was concerned that was highly confidential information which she was not going to disclose to that ill natured girl at any cost. "Madhu please tumhain tumharey betey kii qasam Madhu main sach keh rahi huun mera unn sey milna buhut zaruri hai." Sapna had unwound the coils of the phone line around her fingers in desperation clutching the receiver tightly she was close to tears. Her wrong deeds had made people skeptical of her and now when she actually wanted to save someone's life she was being brutally rebuffed. When Sapna had reached Mishra house she had found it empty both Milind and Prachi had left for their respective destinations. The servants had informed her that the rest of the family had gone to attend a nightlong prayer (jagran) at a closeby temple and would return late at night. The eeriness of the house had seeped in her it was useless to wait for anyone to return. The only way out now was to contact Milind's friend Ali, she had noticed him visit Milind at the office occassionally and hoped he could figure out a way to put things right. He must be knowing some alternate number to Milind's cell phone it seemed the one she had was not functioning properly. The way Prachi smiled at Milind and the way he would reciprocate with equal happiness would sometimes make Sapna wish Shashank would love her in similar fashion. Little had she known destiny had never meant them to be together. As the silence grew longer so had Sapna's trepidation "Please Madhu please mera yaqeen kero main sach keh rahi huun kisi ki zindagi or maut ka sawaal hai meri madad ker do." Madhu had not known why but she had been forced by her heart to comply and had read out Ali's address to a grateful Sapna. She had not wasted another moment, hailing a passing auto she had taken to Ali's house.

The Camry had come to a standstill the corn fields stood as luscious and ripe as they had stood a year earlier. Back then she had been too consumed with fright and horror to notice anything deeply but tonight she took her time. She had asked the driver to go back not forgetting though to take along with her the gallon of gasoline she had gotten filled on the way from a deserted gas station. Tonight she would make sure Shashank did not escape at any cost beasts like him did not deserve to live and in a way she'd be doing the world a favour ridding it of a criminally insane pervert like him. She had unscrewed the cap of the container and had proceeded to douse the walls of the farmhouse with the flammable liquid taking care to cover the adjoining walls too. Picking her way through the wilderness she had soiled the entire area. She had then placed the empty container outside the window that opened in Shashank's bedroom the action obviously was supposed to take place up there. Casting one full look at the dark enveloping gloom she had lifted her feet towards her inevitable doom.

"Ab yeh tumhari amanat hai waqt aaney per issey ley jaana.... apney saath... apney paas... apna banaker. Vaada kero saari khushian dogey issey". Inder's voice had resounded in his ears and he had breathed hard. He did not know why but it felt as if his death hour was upon him sweat beads had started forming on his forehead why was remembering this. It was a dream yet it's significance was tied to this night Milind had recalled himself answering "Vaada kerta huun apsey apni jaan sey barh ker khayal rakhunga iska, hamesha khush rakhunga... apney paas..... apney saath." Why was this happening everything happened for a reason his Baba had often told him then why did it feel as if that statement fit the situation. Inder wanted him to protect Prachi make her his own but protect her from what. God this was so unnerving why wouldn't she just talk to him, dropping his head in his hands he pressed his scalp mercilessly. This was driving him insane first her lies then her tears she was upto something, something unbearable that had caused her such unsurmountable affliction but what, mad with rage he had balled his hands in fists. What did she think he was God how the hell was he supposed to help her out if she kept shutting him out on her thoughts or misery. What was he to do watching the bright lamp posts lining the tarmac he felt like he was dying a slow death. His heart already burdened now felt as heavy as lead his mind refused to work properly. He would've started cursing fate if his cell hadn't started ringing at that particular moment. "Mr Mishra main Sabarwal bol raha huun aapka kaam ho gaya hai" it was the detective and soon Milind had all the answers to the questions his mind was quizzing him with minutes before.
"Sir uska to yeh business hai larkian supply kerne ka. College key zamaaney main ussey kisi Prachi Shah ney uski harkaton key liye college faculty key saamney beizzat bhi kiya tha. Mainey pata lagaya hai Prachi key bhai ko uss ney juey main hara diya tha, shayad Shah mansion key badley. Ussi raat Alaap key father kii death bhi ho gayi thi. Sir sunney main yeh bhi aaya hai usney Prachi Shah ka rape bhi kiya tha." He would've rambled on extremely pleased with his hard work if Milind wouldn't have stopped him. "Bas" he had managed with difficulty his mind felt as if it would explode. "Woh kahaan mileyga?" Milind had asked his tone dead pan, voice firm with determination. "Sir uskey zyaada ter kaaley dhandey uskey farmhouse per hotey hain Mumbaii sey zara aagey hai." Milind had memorized the address Sabarwal had dictated him. Tonight Shashank Saxenna you will breathe your last Milind had promised himself unexpectedly he had neither felt anger nor fear he knew what he had to do. It was destiny he believed he had to relieve Prachi of the guilt she'd been carrying along all this while. Make her free extricate her from her suffering, it was time to finish this charade. Dropping the driver off at the next bus stand he saw Milind had paid him the fare for home and had driven off in the cool night. "Shashank socha kaisey tuuney meri Prachi ko haath bhi laganey key baarey main. Uski saza to main tujhey dey ker hii rahun ga" he had muttered under his breathe. Accelerating the car oblivious of the speedometer that read 180 kms per mile as the speed.

The doorbell had been ringing fervently whoever out there was certainly in an urgency to enter the house. "Arey bhai aa raha huun, kiya mazaq hai ghanti per haath rakh ker bhuul jaatein hain kiya?" Ali had opened the door to see a bedraggled Sapna stand at his doorstep. "Aap?" he had remarked surprised as she stared at him teary eyed. "Aap iss waqt yahaan.... sab theek to haina?" Ali was aware of some grim event having taken place studying in the crimson streaks on her cheek. Her skirt was torn revealing wounds caused by Shashank's merciless beating dealt to her the previous day. Ushering her inside Ali had tried to make her comfortable "Bethiye" he had offered. "Bethney ka waqt nahin merey paas" she had blurted as Ali stared at her thoroughly confused. He knew who she was he had often spied her at Milind's office working like an automaton at her desk poring over her files meticulously. He had heard Milind praise her occassionally for her consistency and ability to work under extreme pressures but right now it did not seem as she was here for any work related problem. When Sapna had felt his searing gaze on her she had lifted her rueful eyes to him. "Prachi ko bacha lijiye please Shashank ussey maar deyga" she had breathed heavily heaving as she sobbed. Her imperious tone had alarmed Ali "Kiya hua hai kuch bataiye to kahaan hai Prachi or yeh Shashank kamina kidhar sey aaya beech main?" In return Sapna had read the entire book named Shashank to him his past, his present, his cruel intentions, the torment he had caused Prachi till date. She had informed him too of her involvement in the entire issue but did not deem it necessary to enlighten him on the fact that the marks her body bore were indeed a gift from him. Ali had turned away his face in disgust "Sharam nahin aayi yeh sab kertey huey or ab aa rahi ho mujhey bataney pehley kidhar mar gaya tha tumhara zameer jab yeh sab tamasha hotey dekhti raheen?" He was furious to know she had been a part of the masquerade Shashank had organised masking his true intentions for Prachi. "Mujh sey ghalati ho gayi" Sapna had accepted defeatedly her eyes downcast as tears dripped from them. "Tum sey ghalati nahin gunah hua hai or gunehgaar ko sazaa dii jaati hai maafi nahin" Ali had spat out in contempt.
Pushing her aside he had sprinted to the phone calling up his friend Vijay. "Yaar masla ho gaya hai tuu aa jaa bas, koi farm house hai Mumbaii sey bahar, der mat kerna or apney bandey ley kar aana aadmi khatarnaak hai" Ali had warned him to come fully armed. Vijay Singh was actually Comissioner of police and fortunately Ali's best friend they had studied in the same college. He knew Milind too being a regular visitor at Ali's place he had befriended Milind also, the moment Ali had called him Vijay had asked a contingent of policemen to reach at the required destination. In no time three police mobiles had set off towards the farmhouse described by Ali to Vijay. Since it had been a personal favour Vijay himself was presiding over the operation. Ali had sounded worried and Vijay knew that tone only too well because Ali was not the type to ask for favours every now and then, something terribly wrong was about to happen and Vijay would try his best to stop it. As Ali had exited to leave for the farmhouse Sapna had followed him "Aap mujhey bhi saath ley chaliye" she had requested. "Eik noutanki kaafi hai dusri nahin chahiye mujhey" he had silenced her harshly. "Please ley chaliye main aapko jagah bata sakti huun" she had tried to reason, "Main khud dhund luunga" pat had come the reply. "Waqt nahin hai please" Sapna had begged him dropping to his feet she sat with folded hands and he had been forced to catch her by her shoulders making her stand. "Betho" he had motioned kick starting his bike why did he feel as if she too had suffered but deemed her suffering far less than Prachi's. As the bike had gathered speed on the empty road so had the combined heartbeats of many young hearts that night some in fear others in pain while one in particular swelled with pride.
P.S. Since the update is an amalgamation of the chain of events in a single night there are bound to be confusions reason i'm separating events in paragraphs. Kindly bear with me.

Part 58 (A)

The door had creaked open to reveal a brightly lit hallway Prachi had breathed hard flashes of her previous visit haunted her, she tried to push herself on but her feet refused to move. Her vision was blurring now and every so often she'd have to steady herself the pills were slowly being digested and the toxic enzymes being released in her blood. Holding her hand out she steadied herself leaning against the balustrade before ascending the staircase to Shashank's bedroom upstairs. After what seemed like eternity she had reached the beast's liar throughout her ascent she was constantly reminded of Milind his face, his eyes, his smile the way he looked at her, their first and last kiss. Her chest constricted and she felt her heart burn in agony it felt as if her entire body was on fire. She felt her resolve weakening but she tightly clenched her fists "Mujhey kerna pareyga yeh, Milind key liye" she had thought determinedly. Gathering her bearings she knocked on the ash door "Come in" she had heard a cruel voice emit from within. Pushing it open she found Shashank swinging in his armchair his eyes fixed on the television screen, "Shashank" she had called out to direct his attention towards her. He had lifted his feral green eyes to watch her stand there shivering in fear though her face was blank he could very well read the terror her eyes bore. Shashank stood up from the chair his tall form advancing towards her, Prachi felt as if she would actually burst into flames the moment he would touch her. "Uff kitni pyaari lagti ho aisi" Shashank had drawled, grinning like a jackal as he pushed away her hair to expose the nape of her neck. Prachi could feel the hair on her neck rise in horror so this was it the end to Prachi Shah. "Shashank meri tasveerain" Prachi had croaked, "ah haan not before I'm done with you" Shashank had snapped his patience was on a short leash that night. "Shashank meri tasveerain do mujhey" Prachi had demanded stepping away from him "Abhi " she stressed on the time. "Kiya socha tumney Prachi tumney kaha or ho gaya.... itna aasan hai sab?" he had snarled closing the distance between them Prachi's head swirled the medication was making her vulnerable. "Shashank" she gasped her body trembling "Meri tasveerain dey do varna buhut pachtao gey" she had threatened him her eyes fixed on him resolutely. "Sach Prachi" he had mocked her pulling her to him biting her ear lobe lustfully, a sob had escaped Prachi's lips. She did not want him near her let alone touch her she shrugged him off and ran near the window. Something had happened then something that had caused Shashank to pause in mid step. Prachi had swayed dangerously before clutching on the curtain for support balancing herself she stood upright but the damage had been done. With quick decisive strides Shashank was upon her cupping her face in his palm he squeezed her cheeks with his bony fingers. Prachi winced in pain as his grip tightened twisting her arm behind her he whispered in her ear "Kiya ker key aayi hai?" Prachi had closed her eyes even if Shashank would've killed her there and then she would've cared less. "Tumhain kiya laga Shashank Prachi tumhari ho jayegi ?" she breathed heavily. "Main mar jaungi Milind key siva kisi ki nahin hongi" she had disclosed the secret her heart bore since long.

"Mar jaana Prachi per uss sey pehley meri to tum zarur banogi" he had smiled sinking his fingers in the soft flesh of her stomach causing her to cringe in agony. Seeing her stand silent Shashank had lost his cool turning her around he pulled at her saree flicking the pallu off her "Shashank!" Prachi had screamed clinging on to it. She cried hysterically as he tugged at it unraveling her fragile form winding it around his hand. "Shashank!" Prachi had shrieked again pulling the fabric trying to cover herself unsuccessfully too late though. He had nearly finished with it and with one last yank had it off her leaving her in her petticoat and blouse. Prachi had fallen down in her struggle and now sidled back in haste, the window her mind kept reminding her, it seemed she could not go on with the act any longer. Her eyes were droopy and heavy soon she would get worse she could already feel contractions in her abdomen it felt as if someone was sawing her insides. Putting her hand to her stomach she pushed herself against the wall trying her best to stand up. If she could just find a match or something to light the gas container she had left beneath the window. Rubbing her eyes to get a clearer view she frantically searched for some sort of light, what she had not acticipated though was Shashank's urgency to conquer her. Before she could even lift a finger he was upon her crushing her beneath him he had pressed his lips against hers stifling her under his weight. She tried desperately to push him away but it was of no use her body felt weak and she realized she was giving in to his mounting force. That could not happen not till she breathed she again attempted to shove him off her breathless and miserable. Her skin burnt as Shashank clasped her tightly underneath him making sure she wasn't in a position to move.

Milind had stepped out of the Kompressor his shoes crunched the dry maize stalks as he trampled on a few. This seemed to be the place there was the corn field his detective had informed him about, the whitewashed fence running around the property and the rundown barn at the south of the house, this was it. Treading the way carefully he scanned the premises for possible lurkers of what he had heard of Shashank he realized he was a dangerous man. Surprisingly there weren't any about at the moment Milind understood he was unarmed but he was sure he'd find something for his defense on the way. He walked inside cautiously when he heard muffled screams emanating from the room above as he ascended the stairs they became clearer. They were supressed and very much feminine making him believe someone was in trouble. His eyes furtively scoured the place for any mode of assistance unluckily there was none opening the door Milind had received the most brutal shock of his life. Pinned ruthlessly below Shashank's lean frame was Prachi. All her efforts to throw him off her had been rendered fruitless and now she lay exhausted crying pitifully her face wet with tears. Shashank had her hands clasped in his own as he tried his best to kiss her raw while Prachi kept moving her face away from his nasty hold. Something inside Milind came alive a rage he had suppressed since long, his anger his ire his frustration all the emotions had amalgamated then in one single thought to kill Shashank. He had descended upon Shashank swiftly like a hawk on it's prey wrenching him off Prachi in one smooth motion. Shashank had certainly not envisioned any intrusion specially not the one he currently faced and stood stunned for a few moments . Prachi had been relieved to find his weight lift off her and had quickly covered her exposed form wrapping her arms around her. She was now totally under the influence of the drugs she had consumed still she could make out Milind stand there stare at her his face as black as thunder. In that one moment she had known if it indeed was Milind he was never going to forgive her for this deceit. She might be hallucinating she had consoled her weary heart getting up to her feet with difficulty, but no it was real Milind indeed was there. Her doubt was further erased when she heard Shashank's fist collide with Milind's jaw. "You bloody b*****d yahaan aaney ki himmat kaisey hui" he snarled furious to see Prachi rush to Milind assessing his wound. The punch had caused him a bloody nose not that he cared. "Saaley aaj tera qissa hii khatam ker duunga" Milind had snapped returning the blow he had received with equal intensity. Soon the two were involved in a vicious combat "Milind!" Prachi had screamed try as she would she couldn't make herself stand any longer and had ended in a heap on the floor.

Milind had clambered to his feet aware of Prachi having passed out but Shashank had twisted his ankle causing Milind's body to collide with his in a crash landing. Milind had wrapped his hands around Shashank's throat tightly as he kicked underneath him. His eyes bulged out of his sockets his breathing raspy but as self preservation kicked in he jerked his head backwards. He brought his hands above Milind joining them together he smashed them on his neck forcefully causing Milind's grip to slacken. Throwing him off himself Shashank had jumped to his feet dealing Milind with a couple of hard kicks which he had borne in mute resilience. Catching his leg Milind had yanked him down before getting to his own feet, he had spotted a small foot stool and had brought it crashing down on Shashank's head. "Uth kaminey" Milind had seethed his anger scorched his soul. The fact that Shashank had been responsible for Prachi's pain and affliction for such a long time had driven him mad. "Bata chua kaisey meri Prachi ko" he had howled punching an already bloody Shashank. " BOL KIYA KIYA" he had hollered "Kiya kiya hai jo woh eik pal sukoon sey jee nahin saki." "Ha!" Shashank had snorted freeing himself of Milind's grasp "Bataya nahin tumhain Prachi ney hum pehley bhi eik saath raat guzaar chukey hain. Shayad meri yaad main tarapti hogi bechari" he had winked at Milind blood dripping from the gash on his forehead. The remark had earned him another well deserved punch in his stomach not that it mattered to him, he was insane only Milind had come to find about it that night. Laughing hysterically he had mocked Milind "Kyun ghussa aa raha hai eik saal terey saath rahi phir bhi tuu ussey haasil nahin ker saka, chuaa tak nahin na ussey!" he cackled in mirth. "Agar pyaar kiya hota to andaaza hota ussey haasil nahin kiya jaata paaya jaata hai, or tujhey kiya lagey yeh bakwaas sun ker mera pyaar kam ho jayega... kabhi nahin. Teri ghalation ki sazaa main ussey kabhi nahin duunga" Milind had replied through gritted teeth. How dare he tell him he had soiled Prachi the very thought of him touching Prachi was enough to refuel Milind's rage. Steely faced as ever, a terrible, unspoken menace in his deep black eyes he had lunged towards him. Shashank had lurched forward and smacked Milind clean in the jaw again causing him a cut lip blood oozed out of his wounds which he spat out immediately. Grabbing him by the waist Shashank had kicked him in his stomach repeatedly making Milind go insane with misery and pain. Shoving him away Milind had kicked him in his stomach making him fall back dealing him with a rapid load of sound kicks. Grabbing his collar he had breathed hard on him "Yeh meri Prachi ko haath lagaaney key liye" taking his hand in his own Milind had twisted it hard till he had heard the satisfying crack of his finger bones being broken. "Kuttey kaminey!!!" Shashank had yelled in pain pummelling him with his free fist. Wiping blood off his brow Milind had tried to pin him to the ground but Shashank had now been thoroughly enraged. Throwing Milind off him he pushed him to the ground crashing a crystal vase kept nearby on his head, clutching his head in agony Milind had tried to stop him but Shashank had fled out of the door. "Abey ruk saaley bhagta kidhar hai" Milind had shouted staggering on his feet following him out of the door.

Part 58 (B)

Ali had stopped his bike near Milind's Kompressor Sapna had jumped off it in haste running towards the door when it had flung open and Shashank had stumbled out of it crashing into her. "Shashank" Sapna had gasped catching him by the arm while he had merely pushed her away making her fall on the sharp stones underfoot. Ali had quickly sprinted to her "Shashank Prachi kahaan hai?" Sapna had struggled to her feet with Ali's help but Shashank was in no mood to listen to her. "Shashank" she had screamed as he disappeared in the corn fields instantly the door had opened again and a bloodied Milind had followed suit. He was a mess blood was flooding down the scars on his bearded face and dripped on his starched white shirt. He desperately tried to trace Shashank he couldn't let him get away to wreak further havoc on Prachi, not this time. "Milind!" Ali had shouted devastated to find his friend in such a condition it seemed as if they had been involved in a mortal combat. "Milind tuu theek to haina?" Ali had questioned in alarm. "Ali, Prachi.... ussey dekh" he had instructed him before running away in the direction of the cornfields. "Shashank!" Milind had hollered when he had felt a sharp blow on his back. It was Shashank he had cursed himself for letting his men go free that night he was now wounded his left hand was of practically no use, when he had remembered the gun he always kept hidden in the barn. Running there he had fished for it from it's hideout triumphant on finding it loaded. Shashank had brought the gun to light aiming it at Milind's face he stood elated at his victory. "Goodbye Milind" he had smiled deliriously when he heard sirens behind him. The place was soon swarming with policemen who had filed out of the three mobiles in accurate precision and now they stood alert rifles aimed at the two men. It was Milind's turn to smile then "aa gaye terey baraati tera band bajaaney" he had hissed while Shashank cursed him at his loudest and vilest. "Ullu key pathey kis ney kaha tha yahaan aaney key liye saath saath apney baapon ko bhi laaya hai" he had muttered. "Tera game kerney key liye to main hii kaafi huun in sab kii zarurat nahin mujhey, tujhey to aaj zinda nahin chorunga main" Milind had retorted fearlessly. The conversation would've prolonged had Sapna not barged in breathless and fearful "Shashank woh Cd kahaan hai?" she had queried.

She had searched the premises thoroughly having found Prachi unconcious she had tried waking her up but her attempts were fruitless. She knew if Shashank ran off without handing over the cd the blackmail would never end. She had run downstairs to inform Ali about Prachi and had rushed forward despite Vijay's warnings she out smarted the police men on guard and ducked past them towards Shashank. So what if she died at least she'd die for a good cause knowing she saved Prachi from the humiliation and torture Shashank had wanted her to face. Milind's ears had pricked up instantly on the mention of the cd now what was that all about, behind them they could hear Vijay speak in the megaphone. "Apney aap ko qanoon key hawaley ker do pistol phenk do police tumhain chaaron taraf sey gher chuki hai." Seeing no way out Shashank had grasped an unaware Sapna by her arm to him his fingers wrapped around her throat he pointed his gun at her temple. He planned to take her as hostage to make his escape inching slowly towards Milind's Kompressor while Milind desperately tried to get a hold of him. "Shashank mujhey marney ka darr nahin Prachi kii tasveerain kahaan hain?" Sapna had struggled in his strong hold. "Bakwaas band ker apni woh tasveerain tujhey kabhi nahin mileingi or waisey bhi ab Prachi ko inki kiya zarurat main unhain press main bhijwa chuka hoon kel dekh lena akhbaar key front page per" he had snarled viciously his eyes alight with an evil glee. Milind had tried to wrench Sapna away from him resulting in an intense crash. The situation was extremely odd and even the most skilled marksmen were at a loss to get a clear shot at Shashank. As they rolled over in a heap on the ground Sapna sadwiched between the two men Milind had attempted to free the pistol from Shashank's hand. But Shashank was not willing to relent kicking Milind hard in the shin. Milind had ignored the pain as it coursed through his leg it was just an addition to the one he was already suffering.

Grabbing Sapna by her waist Milind had tried to pull her free putting his foot between her body and Shashank's he had drawn her towards him. With one final blow he had made Shashank loosen his hold on her and had stumbled back with her in his arms. Meanwhile Ali had found Prachi blood had started flowing through her nose and mouth making him panic. "Prachi, Prachi!" he had called out to her yet she remained motionless. Looking around for her saree he draped her in it before lifting her in his arms carefully carrying her downstairs out of the house. "Ali" Vijay had called out to him "Jaisey hii humain koi clear shot mileyga we'll take him down" he had informed him before helping him lay Prachi in his jeep. Ali watched from afar as Milind freed Sapna from Shashank's grasp his heart throbbed furiously he feared for their safety. Time was less Prachi's condition was getting more severe her body had started convulsing her breathing ragged. "Hum aakhri baar warning dey rahey hain release your weapon and surrender!" Vijay had notified him again. Finding himself surrounded and death at a stone's fling Shashank had found it justifiable to kill Milind along with him. "Main nahin jiyunga to tuu kyun jiye" he had yelled his face twisting in hate opening fire. Unfortunately for him it was Sapna who had covered Milind she had suspected such a move on his part and had refused to move aside even as Milind tried to shove her away. Two bullets had punctured her abdomen leaving Milind shocked as she slumped in his arms gasping for breath. "Shashank!" Milind had hollered visibly shaken enraged at Sapna's condition. Ali had grabbed the megaphone from Vijay in that instant and had yelled in it. "Milind hatt!" instinctively Milind had rolled away on the ground holding a dripping Sapna close to him. When he had heard gunshots being fired watching expressionlessly as Shashank's body was riddled with them. The marksmen had finally got a clear shot and they had availed the opportunity to finish him off. All had watched as Shashank had writhed like a rope on fire howling in obvious pain before his soul departed for the next realm where a more darker fate awaited him. Answers to his deeds in the world he was leaving behind and there was no escape from there not even death. Sapna had started thrashing her body jerked uncontrollably, "Sir" she breathed "Prachi ki tasveerain...... Shashank ney... unko press main.... unhain dhundein" She was finding it hard to talk as blood filled her lungs and now found it's way out her open mouth. Her fingers clutched his suit already soiled crimson wasting no time Milind had picked her in her arms placing her in his Kompressor. "I'll take care of him you take them to the hospital" Vijay had assured Ali who had shifted Prachi to the Kompressor too. Soon the farmhouse was deserted and silent the corn fields stood majestically ripe and full what remained behind was the horror and terror. Tyre marks from Milind's Kompressor as it had hurried away in the black night rushing to take the two women to a hospital. Footprints of the policemen who had hauled Shashank's lifeless form in one of the mobiles a pool of blood marked the area where his body had been. One of the officers was a chain smoker having finished off with his last cigarette he had flicked the burning stub carelessly out of the window. Ironically it had landed on the trail of gasoline Prachi had sprinkled earlier that night the fire had started slowly and as the rising wind fanned it the conflagration had spread. Soon a resounding boom was sounded in the wilderness as the gallon ignited bursting into flames and slowly but steadily the entire house was also consumed. They say pride comes before a fall Shashank had been proud of his achievements, his vicious plan to own Prachi his ability to act God to her. Maybe God himself hadn't been very happy at that thought and so it had all ended where it had started exactly a year earlier.

Part 59

"Prachi Prachi, aankhein khol Prachi" Milind had called out in agony patting her cheek casting a worried look at her slumped figure beside him in the passenger seat. "Ali yeh kuch bolti kyun nahin?" Milind was practically shouting now, the continual flow of blood from Prachi's nose had him worried to death. He tried his best wipe it off with his handkerchief muttering curses under his breath "Prachi kuch bol please" he had literally begged her alas she was in no position to answer him. The nights events weren't something to be dwelled on but he couldn't help thinking all this would certainly have never happened if Prachi hadn't lied to him. "Milind mujhey lagta hai issney kuch khaya ya piya hai zeher ya kuch aisa warna itna khoon nahin behta" Ali had informed him and Milind had stepped on the gas not that he wasn't speeding before, 200kmph the speedometer had read. It was a relief in itself that Vijay's jeep sped before him the reason no other vehicle obstructed their path, the sirens continued to blare as the small convoy of cars sped on the roads. Sapna had closed her eyes in obvious misery as tears stained her bloodied cheeks she lay on the backseat her head resting in Ali's lap. His hand clamped on her abdomen in a vain attempt to stop the blood from spilling out. Her breathing was raspy her face contorted depicting her torment. Ali felt her fingers close around his as she suppressed a moan involuntarily his other hand had reached her forehead as he smoothed back her hair falling on it. He felt guilty of having doubted her earlier that evening shouting at her without realizing the depth of her suffering. He had swiped his sleeve across her mouth wiping away the blood trickling from it. Soon the familiar sight of the hospital loomed in view both the men had felt their hearts beat anew as Milind had hastily halted the Kompressor in front of the door. Vijay had stepped out of his jeep before them clearing the exit Milind had gathered Prachi in his arms while Ali had picked up Sapna both of them had been escorted with their respective charges by a team of policemen. The doctors had been alerted and awaited the patients no one had dared ask for any sort of details, Sapna had been immediately wheeled in an operating unit while Prachi too was taken in for examination. Milind had felt his insides turn to ice as he saw experienced surgeons swarm in behind both the women a ray of hope had flickered when he saw Dr Deepa walk past him.

"Dr Deepa please Prachi ko dekhiye" he had pleaded and Deepa had been stunned to see him that way. No longer was Milind the same person she had seen a couple of weeks earlier when he had met her to get Prachi's grandmother discharged after the operation. Instead of a handsome and confiident man stood a rather crestfallen and disheveled figure he himself was a bloody mess his open wounds indicating that he had been through hell. His upper lip bore a cut there were several small gashes on his left cheek and blood dripped from his matted hair. "Mr Milind our team is there to help her you need medical attention too" she had coaxed him to get himself treated. "Kahin nahin jaana mujhey yahaan sey jab tak Prachi theek nahin ho jaati" he had spoken furiously refusing to get himself any medication before he got the details on Prachi. "Milind haalat dekh apni" Ali had tried to reason "bhaad main jaye haalat mujhey parwah nahin Prachi ko theek kero doctor har haalat main har qeemat per" he had ordered Deepa when he felt the scene blackening around him. "Ali had sensed his condition getting severe "Dr Deepa please get us an info on her current condition and then I will get him treated myself" he had requested to the kind doctor who had immediately darted inside the operating unit.
Moments later she had appeared with a complete update "She's consumed morphine in a large content the effects of which are poisonous if used in such a large proportion. The good news is she didn't chew the tablets that gives us time to bind the toxins by using liqui-char to prevent intestinal absorption. It's already been absorbed by the stomach but they're working on it. There's a good chance the activated carbon will interrupt the enterohepatic circulation of toxins and their metabolites" she had informed a frustrated Milind. "English please!" he had hinted his inability to decipher the medical vocabulary ghostly traces of defeat welling in his eyes "Will she make it?" that certainly was the sole thought that had kept him glued to the spot despite his physical inflictions. "You'll have to wait for the doctors to give you their word on it but I believe she will" Deepa had assured both of them Milind had stood resolute then too. "The procedure will take time Mr Milind" Deepa had endeavoured to make him budge "If you'r so concerned get the medicines here" he had snapped though soon he swayed dangerously collapsing in Ali's arms struggling to remain on his feet. "This way" Deepa had motioned to Ali who had slipped his arm around Milind's waist propping him against himself he guided his staggering form to the room she led them to. Making him lie on the hospital bed he had touched his shoulder in assurance "Kuch nahin hoga ussey Milind... kuch nahin" he had tried to instill faith in Milind who had closed his eyes in pain ruminating on the night's events. Did she have to lie make him believe he meant nothing to her, why had she not trusted him enough to help her through this... why. A silent tear had slid from Milind's closed eyes mingling with the congealed blood on his face, he could never forgive her for this... never.

"Inspector who's with that girl?" the doctor had exited from the operating theatre in haste Vijay had looked at him in question. "She's had two bullets shot in her stomach we have removed them though we realized she's pregnant we'll have to go ahead with an abortion the fetus is no more, the shots were lodged in it someone needs to sign these papers... right now." Vijay had marched upto Ali with the doctor in tow "Ali yeh larki kon hai?" he had inquired about Sapna "Sapna....Milind kii office main kaam kerti hai Shashank ko jaanti thi" Ali had given him as much information as he had on him. "Goli lagney kii wajah sey isska bacha mar gaya hai abortion key liye signatures chahiyein, isskey ghar waalon ki kuch khabar?" Vijay had given him details on Sapna's situation. It was rather critical if they did not abort the child she would suffer from a stroke and blood poisoning resulting in her death as it was the blood loss incurred by her was fatal. "Kahaan sign kerna hai?" Ali had questioned the doctor who had pointed to the dotted line. "Aap ka naam ?" he had inquired his name "Khan .... Ali ehsan khan!" he had given it to him quietly. "Mareez sey rishta?" the doctor had queried this time impatiently he was aware of the minutes ticking by each one was crucial for her. "Her husband!" Vijay had intruded the conversation laying a heavy hand on Ali's shoulder who had watched him through silent eyes. As the doctor had left clacking on his heels Vijay had smiled apologetcally "Sorry yaar jhoot bol diya per agar details main pertey woh mar jaati or iss case main uski statement buhut zaruri hai." Ali had shaken his head indicating that he understood him perfectly he stood in the corridor a serious and sorry figure down the hallway two of the operating units held the women he had considered his responsibility and on the other end his friend fretted in mute agony. "Ya Allah rehem ker hum sab per" he had prayed as his feet lifted towards Milind's room there still was a lot to this night somehow he had a feeling it wasn't over yet. He entered the room to find Milind getting his head wrapped in a snowy bandage his wounds been cleaned and treated he looked much better. Rolling up his sleeve he had let the needle pierce his skin Deepa had insisted on giving him a tetanus shot. "Ali mujhey jaana hoga" he had gotten up then putting on his jacket "Per kahaan Milind?" he had questioned flabbergasted Milind certainly was in no condition to take up nocturnal excursions. "Shashank ney Prachi kii kuch tasveerain press main deen hain, shayad ussey blackmail ker raha tha unn ki wajah sey. Mujhey unhain chapney sey rokna hoga Ali" Milind had explained exiting the room followed by Ali. "Main chalun?' he had inquired "Nahin, yahaan bhi to koi hona chahiye. Tuu yahiin reh Ali mujhey akeley hii jaana pareyga."

But Ali would not let him have his way he had asked Vijay to go along with Milind who had readily consented to do so. It was only nine in the evening but to Milind it seemed as if the night had stretched over a millenium it just didn't end, moreover he was thankful there was still time to track down the newsagency. Vijay had made a few calls and so had Milind the contacts they had served to be good leads, a few printing presses were ruled out as possible suspects and they had separated ways. It turned out the third paper Milind had on the list was the one "Mujhey woh pictures chahiyein, kisi bhi haalat main" Milind had smirked advancing towards the manager. It took him a good deal of time to make the manager own up to having them in the first place knowing Shashank Milind realized he'd have hit the filthiest paper in town and boy was he right. "Dekhiye mister qeemat ada kii hai in key liye hum ney" and that was the limit Milind had had enough of it thwacking him straight across his jaw Milind had beat him purple. "Qeemat ada kii hai kisi ki zindagi barbaad kerney key liye, qeemat dii hai kisi kii izzat neelam kerney key liye" he yelled in fury outraged at his audacity to tell him he'd paid for them. What did he think he'd get away with it, well not till Milind breathed. "Dekhiye main ab tak aapka lihaaz ker raha tha ab main police ko bulaunga" the manager was certainly clutching at straws wiping blood off his lip he knew very well the cd he had contained pictures of Prachi, Milind's wife. Shashank had struck a deal with him to expose Prachi's past as painted by him, in his newspaper well known for printing celebrity gossip for cheap publicity. "Tuu kiya bulaieyga saaley main bulata huun terey baap ko" saying so Milind had dialled up Vijay informing him about the CD and his whereabouts. Vijay had soon been there at his side and together they had shown the manager that they meant business, placing the cd in his jacket pocket Milind had thanked Vijay who had waved it off.
"Shashank to waisey bhi humari hit list per tha usskey human or drug trade kii kayii complaints humain mil chuki theen per ab tak uska pata lagana mushkil tha aapki wajah sey aaj eik criminal apney anjaam ko puhuncha hai" he had smiled and they had both returned to the hospital. Ali paced the shining marble of the corridor for the millionth time he'd never known life would come to this, but it had and now he was in the middle of it. He hadn't sit, hadn't had anything to eat or drink hadn't even stopped praying, his lips chanted in silence while his eyes were kept glued to the flashing red bulbs above the OT'S. After what seemed like eternity and when he felt that his soul would just go numb he saw Milind and Vijay walk in, triumph etched on their faces. One look at him and Milind knew the verdict was still very much impending their eyes had met and Milind had hugged him then he realized Ali needed strength what for was not the question. "Mili?" he had heard Ali whisper "Haan" he had replied huskily making him sit on the wooden bench outside the operating unit. "Sapna ko kuch nahin hoga" Milind had squeezed his shoulder in assurance and he had seen relief flood in Ali's eyes. "Tujhey lagta hai?" his voice was feeble forcing a weak smile "Mujhey yaqeen hai" Milind's was positive. Ali sat tired to the bone he had understood a change had occurred it was now when Milind had tapped into his fear had he realized the change was very much effective in his heart. He had known Sapna since long liked her longer still but had never picked up courage to talk to her even in a formal way. To him she was divine the way her strikingly black hair hung in loose layers around her face, the way her honey shaded skin shone when she smiled. Her eyes they mesmerized him they were a queer shade of sand and grass combined together and whenever they had rested on him even for a fraction of a second he had felt he was over the moon. Tonight when she had come searching for him his heart had missed a beat to see her of all people on his doorstep. The same heart now was at a standstill too weary to beat with all it's intensity she had been pregnant, he had known she loved another it clearly reflected in her eyes. They were ever dreamy and distant and once he had overheard her talk to someone in loving tones he had never looked back then praying for her to be blessed in life. Love stands the test of time quite true Ali had thought casting a dismayed glace over to Milind. They both were giving the same test their hearts had led them to this thorny path and now they trode on it with wounded feet.

After two more hours the wait was over for both of them the doctors had emerged from the operating theatre bearing Prachi, Milind had immediately taken to the doctor "How is she?" he had questioned his blood rimmed eyes quick and alert. "She's out of danger Mr Mishra it's a good thing the poison hadn't spread beyond her stomach else we'd be in deep s**t" he had smiled good naturedly. " She'll be unconscious for some time a day or two you don't need to worry about that even after gaining conscious she'll be having bouts of nausea, but nothing more to worry about" saying so he had left. Milind had closed his eyes peace had finalled raided his senses after a very long time. A few minutes later Prachi was wheeled out and taken to an Intesive Care Unit she may have had the poison flushed out of her system still there could be complications and the doctor wasn't prepared on taking any risks. Milind's eyes had followed her pale form covered in blue sheets her hair flowing down on either side she seemed to be sleeping peacefully rather than just coming back from battling death. His feet had moved instinctively in her direction but he had willed them to stop turning away from her. Ali had noticed his restrain and had approached him "Kiya iraada hai?" he had questioned his eyes serious. He had sensed Milind's heartbreak on seeing Prachi's condition yet could not understand his hesitation to be by her side when she needed him the most. "Iraadey or vaadey inn sey ab yaqeen uth gaya hai mera, sab khokley hotey hain baaton ki tarah" he had stared at him listlessly "Or jhootey vaadon kii tarah. Tuu apna sapna dekh Ali shayad woh sach ho jaaye" Milind had placed a heavy hand on his shoulder before crumpling on the wooden bench. He may not have been close to Sapna yet she was his employee and very much his responsibility. After several agonizing minutes had passed the surgeon had sauntered out thoroughly pleased with his work "She made it" he had informed a distressed Ali and concerned Milind. "She still needs to be monitored for pulmonary infection quite a lot of blood had to be cleared from her lungs and yes Mr Ali are you the husband?" the doctor had added as an afterthought. Milind had rested a knowing eye on Ali who was all ears "Yes" he had answered confidently " I'm quite sorry to inform you she might never be able to conceive again." Ali had gawped at the doctor as if he'd just shelled him with a bomb while Milind had felt his heart sink.

The girl had been deprived of the one trait that completed the transition of a female from a woman to a mother, Sapna could never become one. "Are you sure doctor?" Ali's voice had appeared as it was emanating from the pits of a well distant and hollow "I'm not ruling it out as a final judgment the authority to breathe life rests with God alone Mr Ali but the chances are really slim you should be prepared for the worst." With that the doctor had patted his back slightly and gone away to the cafeteria he had indeed had a long day. For all those times that Milind had needed him Ali had been right beside him and now it was his time. He watched as Ali's eyes followed a ghostly Sapna being wheeled out of the OT, she was on a ventilator her beautiful face bearing the torment she had borne. Ali stood numbed powerless to move when Milind had draped a soothing arm over his shoulder leading him out of the hospital's dreary corridors. They had spent too much time fretting over women who hardly cared for their emotions in the first place. Milind had ordered two coffees at the cafeteria watching Ali sip his quietly he had cleared his throat "Kabhi bataya nahin Sapna key baarey main" he had remarked in a hurt tone scrutinizing Ali's expressions. Ali had cast a deep glance at him "Bataney kii zarurat jo nahin pari kabhi tujhey, mujhey malum tha tuu jaanta hai" and that certainly was the truth. Milind had understood Ali's predicament the way Ali's eyes lit up when he saw Sapna made Milind realize it was more than infatuation but Ali had just stopped coming to his office. Milind had tried asking him the cause but could not understand the absurd excuses he'd churn up at the spur of the moment and one day he had caught him in the act. Sapna had been in his office getting official documents signed Ali had been there too when Sapna's cell had rung up she had cut the call twice but it still kept buzzing. Milind had allowed her to attend the call while he read the papers even though her tone was low the conversation was audible "Main nahin aa sakti" she had whispered. "Samjhney kii koshish kero please" she had tried explaining to the person at the other end. "Haan kerti huun, shak hai kiya tumko?" this time she was irritated after a few more minutes she had given in "acha baba milungi haan shaam ko..... I do too." It hadn't taken much effort for both the men to understand what was going on but what startled Milind was Ali's condition. The light in his eyes had vanished he sat there sober and serious and had soon excused himself. Milind had caught him stare at Sapna with a certain and deep yearning and he had known then his friend was in love.

Part 60

"Mr Milind aakhir aisi konsi wajah thi jiskey chaltey aap apney dream project key inauguration per nahin aa sakey?" the journalist had thrust forward his question one out of the million he was being bombarded with. He was in the middle of a press conference his mind was blank eyes blood shot, his head throbbed badly the effect of the pain killer was probably wearing off. He had placed a heavy hand on his bandaged head trying to keep his mind alert he hadn't slept properly for quite some time now first the insomnia watching Prachi's dilemma and then the battle with Shashank, he felt drained and completely exhausted. His spokesman tried to play it safe "Dekhiye aap log shaant ho jaaiye, Milind sir ka accident ho gaya tha is liye woh nahin aa sakey" the man had put forward the statement they had prepared an hour earlier. The press meet was a necessity had it not been so Milind would've never consented to it but here his reputation as a businessman was at stake. He had been sipping coffee with Ali in the hospital cafeteria when he chanced to see a man opposite them read the paper and there on the first page his name glittered in all glory. "Milind Mishra is it worth it?" Milind had immediately bought the morning paper which was filled with anomalous calumnies and eccentric lies regarding him. Going through a few lines alone had made Milind realize how low the press could stoop to drag his name through the mud. References to his past were printed boldly accusing him of being irresponsible not attending the inauguration of his own dream project. It had been a known fact that he had worked the midnight oil to get the hotel on the map, it was a one of a kind the most expensive, lavish and elaborate hotel and club complete with golf courses, a mutiplex and it's very own shopping arcade. Milind had planned meticulously and had executed it with pristine precision and now it was all water under the bridge. In his face off with Shashank he had completely forgotten about the inauguration, all that had mattered then was Prachi's safety and after that her recovery.

Crumpling the paper Milind had thrown it away in disgust had Prachi told him the truth earlier Shashank could have been dealt with in a more appropriate manner, he could've made it to his inaugaration and wouldn't have become the laughing stock of the town. Taking out his cell phone he had asked Madhu to book him a ticket to Delhi on the next available flight. Ali had been watching him worriedly he had known about the inauguration and understood Milind's acrimony in his opinion he was justified in feeling that way. "Kahaan jaa raha hai Milind?" he had questioned when Milind had handed him his dedit cards in case he needed cash. "Delhi" "Per kyun?" everything had been finished what would Milind achieve by going there the press was ready to shred him to bits "Tamasha khatam kerney" Milind had replied coldly before driving away in the cool morning. Milind couldn't believe he had been played so bad by Prachi what did she think he was a bloody dog she could pet and shun at her own free will, what had he not given her love, trust and above everything else his heart and she hadn't thought twice before fibbing to him. How dare she, how dare she make him go through such misery she damn well knew what she meant to him, didn't she even once consider the consequences to her actions. What if she would've died what would he have done "Tum pyaar key qaabil nahin Milind Mishra..... qaabil nahin. Ghalati thi meri jo tum sey pyaar kiya, tumhain apni zindagi maana, paagal ho gayi tumharey pyaar main." Kaajal had screamed in all intensity and Milind had felt as if he had been pulled back in time, nothing had changed. He was the same Milind, the women were the same just their faces had been switched yet their hearts they were replicas of each other did he not deserve love. Maybe he didn't he had though fantasized that he did, been desperate to believe that he was capable of loving which was a lie in itself. It had suddenly dawned to him that Prachi had never been at fault it was he who was to blame. Had this not been the truth Kaajal would never had left him he had failed her then and had failed Prachi now, he was a certified loser and love was certainly not his destiny. He knew what he had to do making his mind clear on his task he had sped on the streets to the airport but before that he had to tell the world he actually gave a damn. On reaching Delhi he had arranged for a press conference and now he sat like a convict before a jury being accused and railed at. "Per aisey kisi accident ki khabar humain to nahin mili" another reporter had jumped up they were smart little rats who had done their homework properly.
"Hum aap sey jhoot kyun boleingey... aap dekh nahin rahey inki haalat" his spoekesman had retorted irritatedly this was getting too much. Anger bubbled in Milind well if the world was hell bent on painting him red then be it that way. "Band ker apni bakwaas" he had stood up glowering at the reporter who had immediately shut his trap "Kahaan tha kiya ker raha tha kisi key baap ka raaj hai kiya. Arey tum jaisey do takey key log jo paison key liye, eik khabar key liye kissi ki izzat daav per laganey sey pehley eik baar nahin sochtey un sey mujhey koi behes nahin kerni. Kiya jaanna chahtey ho, kahaan tha main then listen very carefully main eik kaam main busy tha. Kiya ker raha tha kyun raha tha none of your bloody business. Reh gayi reputation to Milind Mishra paanch saal pehley kuch nahin tha. Mera naam , meri izzat merey kaam sey hai zindagi key haadson sey nahin. Jissey mera hotel acha lageyga zarur aayega or jissey nahin lageyga uski mujhey parwah nahin. Now just get out from my hotel.... ALL of you!" he had shouted. Yes he'd been every thing but courteous and well it certainly didn't matter to him in his opinion all was already lost. He could feel countless pictures been clicked could hear the reporters openly calling him a snob and the power going to his brain. Only he knew though what actually had gotten to his mind sauntering out of the conference hall pertinaciously he certainly had put up a good act.

Prachi had opened her eyes with a herculean effort it felt as if she was falling down an abyss deeper and deeper she wanted to stop but couldn't. She batted her eyelids still heavily drugged the room seemed to be dancing on it's own accord the walls kept bending in and out. She tried to move but couldn't she was being sucked in the vortex again someone was beside her though she couldn't make out who it was. "Milind" she had whispered lifting her hands to his face "Prachi.... Prachi" the voice had called it felt as if it was coming from afar "Milind" she had murmured again before lapsing in a dreamless sleep. "Doctor when is she going to wake up?" Ali had asked Deepa in anguish Prachi kept falling in and out of consciousness he was panicking now how long would she be that way. Deepa who had been there checking on her drip had watched the scene before checking out her pupils which were thankfully dilating and contracting as normal. "She's fine Ali but she'll sleep the morphine off I told you that before you'll get the same answer even if you ask me this ten times." she had tried to pass it off as a joke but the truth was she could gauge Ali's mounting anxiety. Till yet both Prachi and Sapna hadn't gained consciousness, Ali hadn't informed at home either but now he realized he couldn't hold it off any longer. He had dialled to Shah mansion asking Premlata to join him at the hospital "Ali sab theek to haina?" Premlata's shaky voice was proof to her worry, "Sab theek hai aunty bas aap yahaan aa jaiyiye or filhaal Baba ya kisi or ko kuch mat bataiye ga" he had reminded her on impulse. She had promised to do and had immediately left for the hospital half an hour later Premlata stood next to Prachi carressing her sleeping daughter's soft chheks her face a picture of sorrow.
"Itna kuch ho gaya tum ney humain bataya tak nahin Ali" she had complained visibly upset planting a tender kiss on Prachi's forehead. " Aunty Prachi ney humain kuch nahin bataya or jab tak pata chala buhut der ho chuki thi" Ali had confided the whole truth to her. "Or Milind woh kahaan hai?" she had questioned it seemed odd to her that Milind was not by Prachi's side at this hour. "Aaj ka paper shayad parha nahin aapney" he had brought it to her and going through it she had felt burdened with guilt for doubting him. "Kaash key Prachi ney kuch bataya hota, mujh sey bhi chupaya... main to maa huun uski" Premlata had rubbed her forehead wretchedly. Thoughts ran wild in her mind what if Milind hadn't traced her to the farmhouse she'd have lost her daughter forever. Premlata had shed tears of pain she was too numbed to think further she had lost Inder then her son and was not prepared to have her daughter be taken away from her too. "Aunty sanbhaliye apney aap ko" Ali had comforted her fetching her a glass of water which she had drunk in small sips. "Mishra ji sey kiya bolungi main kahaan gayi hai?" she had raised the question Ali had been trying to avoid he too had been thinking of various excuses for Prachi's disappearance from home. "Aap keh dijiyega Soumya key paas gayi hai" he had suggested and she had nodded thoughtfully that was the only ruse she could use at the moment. She had left after staying for a while Daadi had been alone at him besides she did not wish Bua or Milind's father to get suspicious of her unannounced absence from the house.
Ali had found his feet being drawn to Sapna's room automatically he entered hesitantly. Though the hospital staff considered him her husband and was being updated on her condition from time to time yet he had not found the courage to go check on her till then. The blinds were drawn and the room was silent except for the occassional beeps of the machine she was hooked on. Ali had advanced noiselessly just watching her there pale and expressionless had made his heart lurch what had she done to herself. He had prayed in all those days that he had known her to be happy remain smiling forever he though had not the slightest idea that his silence and sacrifice had made God make him have her for eternity. Taking her limp hand in his own he had felt his vision blur a tear had rested on her hand and he had kissed it away with love. Words failed him as he tried to speak there were none, none that could measure up to the torment he felt watching her that way it was too gut wrenching as if someone had driven a knife through him and had let it stay there watching him bleed to a slow painful death. The door had been pushed open and he saw a nurse step in "Mr Ali you'll have to step out I need to change her" she had informed him and he had left. The nurse though had witnessed him wipe away his tears in haste sympathising with the depressed husband as she supposed him to be.
Milind looked through the clear glass of the aircraft it had just been air borne below he could see the earth falling away the buildings mere specks. He leaned back letting the sinking feeling in his stomach settle down as the airplane gained altitude closing his eyes tiredly. It had been a long day rather a long lifetime after his rather outrageous outburst at the press conference he had made a few quick calls to Vijay in Mumbai asking him to draw up something that would prove as an alibi for his accident. He did not want the Shashank fiasco being unearthed at any cost. If indeed that happened Prachi's name would be the talk of the town the media would go wild in frenzy another tidbit on Milind Mishra and Prachi would've sufferred at his hands, that certainly was not acceptable. The deed had been done the evidence fabricated late that afternoon another press conference had been arranged by his board of members explaining to the press the cause of his absence. Proof was provided including images of a wrecked car on the highway and a recorded statement from The Police Commissioner himself. The wagging tongues had halted and he had been given a clean bill by the numerous dailies that had till that morning been branding him as fickle and capricious not that it mattered to him. Moreover his physical injuries were also substantial in adding leverage to his case he had read the evening paper "Milind Mishra wrongly accused" and had thrown it in the bin before boarding the aircraft. He wondered when he would actually stop being in the limelight for all the wrong reasons why was he never mentioned when he won accolades for his thriving business or his hotels got tagged as brand of the year, or hotel of the year. But such was the world wasn't it, it never remembered one for the good one did rather kept digging graves of the skeletons in one's past. "Sir would you like some juice or coffee?" the flight attended had inquired she waited patiently for his answer as he mused. "Coffee.. make it black... no sugar" he had instructed , the woman had looked at him puzzled but had complied filling a cup with steaming black liquid. He sat with it running his fingers on the edges of the cup feeling the steam scorch them his gaze flitted back to the sky which was a bright crimson. The sun was bidding adieu welcoming the inky shadows that would fast approach but for now it was a palate of hues bright vibrant and spectacular. It had appeared heavenly then tufts of clouds were stretched as far as the eye could see their wispy forms billowing like froth, the sun's rays painting them red and deep gold it looked perfect just like a dream. He was overcome with a childish desire to step out of the airplane on this thick carpet of vapour. That looked like painted cotton rather bales of it at a glance run over it letting his feet sink in the fluffy contents and he had smiled.
He was instantly reminded of Preeti she loved sunsets and clouds had taken a lot after him.
"Papa coud" she had raised his face to hers as he lay on the grassy nook in the lawn. It had been a beautiful sunny day with white hordes of clouds scurrying across the welkin. "Cloud" he had corrected her she sat straddled atop him putting up her hands to the skies she had closed her fists in a futile attempt to catch some. He had smiled watching her that way and his heart had filled with pride, his daughter , his life she made his day ... every day. "Papa!" she had cried tired at last giving up on the task altogther her curls ruffling in the breeze. "Kiya hua?" he had questioned lazily and had opened one eye to look at her sad face. "Nahin aaya cloud haath main?" and she had shaken her head in the affirmative. Pulling her closer he had kissed her on the lips before shifting her off him "Koi baat nahin abhi dekh lo Papa key saath phir main apni gurya ko khud bana ker duunga clouds" he had promised. She had clapped her hands in elation grinning her father kept his promises and had lain on his out stretched arm her left leg resting on his torso. They had spent a wonderful afternoon watching the clouds make different patterns on that sunny day. Much later they had both dozed off the cool wind fanning them the shaded seclusion providing them the much needed peace and had only stirred to hear Prachi waking him. "Uthiye na Milind, shaam ho gayi yahiin so gaye. Aap aaye kyun nahin kab sey intizaar ker rahi huun aapka" and Milind's eyes had flown open. Her voice it had felt so close as she had just been beside him moments ago yet he was only joined by a few more passangers in the business section of the aircraft. Intizaar he thought unhappily gulping down the bitter scalding coffee " Intizaar to ab bas teri khushion ka hai Prachi jo ab shayad merey saath nahin."
Later as he entered the hospital corridor he had found Ali exactly where he had left him his eyes were puffy registering sleeplessness and he looked as if he'd walked a million miles. "Ali ghar jaa ab" he had told him. "Per Milind tuu bhi to abhi" he had tried to reason but Milind knew Ali had responsibilities of his own. He had called Saadia up telling her he had stayed over at a friend's place but it was night now and Milind wanted him to have some rest before resuming his watch at the hopital. "Behes mat ker Ali maan jaa, ghar jaa maa ko shakal to dikha apni pareshaan ho rahi hogi." Milind had explained. Ali had informed him earlier that he had indeed told Premlata about their little adventure in the night and Milind had deemed it an appropriate act someone had to be informed and Premlata was the safest bet. He had hugged Ali then he had been his sole confidant for so long he'd lost track of the years Ali's eyes had closed then his heart at ease "Pareshaan kyun hai Ali woh theek ho jayegi" he had assured him patting his back. "Woh tuut jayegi Milind" Ali had mumbled afraid of the wind carrying the news to her if he spoke aloud. "Tujhey to rab per bharosa hai na, phir aaj kiya hua? Kahaan gaya woh yaqeen jo teri aankhon main dikhta hai?" Milind had questioned him staring at his worn face. "Rab per to khud sey zyaada yaqeen hai bas khud per nahin" he had confided in him. "Chal saala mujhko maama banata hai" taking his face in his hands Milind had made him meet his eye. "Kiya bolta tha tuu pyaar sey barh ker kuch nahin hota, phir tera pyaar uskey har zakhm ka marham hoga. Ab chal ghar jaa" Milind had smiled and Ali had beamed. "Yeh kyun nahin bolta apni waali key saath time pass kerna hai" Ali had joked punching him in the stomach before leaving the hospital for home.
