Part 32 (A)
The rest of the night had seemed like eternity neither had been able to sleep and had lain awake their minds vigil with thoughts of the journey they had chosen to embark on together. Soon Prachi was back home and Preeti had been safely deposited to her father, Milind hadn't felt so relieved in a very long time atleast Bua wasn't going to give him sleepless nights any more. The problem though was of breaking the news to the family, both of them would have to be subtle to their respective parents and here too it had been Ali who had come up with a plan. Early next morning after Milind had departed to the office Ali had come over Mishraji was busy trying to make head and tail of the political scenario of the country reading the morning paper when he saw Ali walk in. "Baba aaj to mithai khilaiye aap mujhey" Baba today you'll have to get me sweetmeats he had said dropping on the sofa beside him "Kyun aisa kiya kaam ker diya tuuney?" Why what have you done to deserve them? Baba had raised his glasses to study him "Vaah baba bahu dhund dii appko or aap hain keh koi khushi hii nahin, jaaiye main baat nahin kerta aap sey." Baba I found you a daughter in law and you'r not pleased at all fine I'm not talking to you he had feigned anger childishly. He could see the word Bahu had made Baba tingle with excitement "Meri bahu" My daughter in law he had asked in disbelief "Mazaq to nahin ker raha merey saath tuu" Are you joking? he was still uncertain of it being the reality. "Sach main Baba Milind ney shaadi ker lii hai lekin darr key maarey aapko bata nahin raha, larki ghareeb haina iss liye" Really Baba Milind had gotten married he didn't tell you because he was afraid since the girl is poor Ali had informed him secretively "Abhi abhi dekh ker aa raha huun main dono ko mandir main, aap kahein to aapko bhi dikha duun". I just saw them in the mandir if you want I'll take you to them As expected of him Baba had jumped up in anticipation calling for Ramu Kaka he instructed him to make arrangements for the evening and hurriedly left with Ali and Preeti. All the way to the mandir Baba kept asking questions about Prachi her name, her family, her likes dislikes and Ali answered as little as possible informing him about Prachi's position in Milind's firm and her interaction with Preeti soon they were at the steps of the temple. Prachi's mention had excited Preeti she kept tugging at Ali's sleeve inquiring about her "Mumma" she'd repeat every few minutes alternating it with pleas for her father "Papa kaan?" she would ask her grandfather pitifully the child had certainly missed them both. She was beginning to understand her bond with them and felt it hard to express the exact amout of unhappiness their absence had caused her.

As they ascended up the stairs they saw Milind and Prachi standing near one of the marble pillars their hands folded they prayed with closed eyes. Both Milind and Prachi were dressed in white the serenity of their companionship etched on their faces Baba couldn't help but notice how peaceful Milind had seemed as if all his troubles had been forgotten. His heart skipped a beat to see Prachi by his side something about her struck him as familiar but he brushed the thought away maybe she resembled someone he knew or had seen somewhere. After the pooja Milind had turned to find Baba watch him gravely. Now it was Milind's part he sprinted upto his father acting to be alarmed at his presence "Baba aap?" Baba you? he questioned the old man breathlessly. "Yeh to acha hua Ali ney mujhey sab kuch bata diya, mujhey to mana kerta rehta tha shaadi nahin kerunga or ab chup chaap ker lii shaadi mujhey hawa tak nahin lagney di" Ali has told me everything, you kept telling me you wouldn't marry and here you've silently tied the knot and didn't even inform me he was angry at his son this was the moment he had awaited since long and Milind had gone ahead and blown it up. "Per Baba" But Baba he tried explaining when Prachi had appeared from behind. "Baba inki ghalati nahin, inhain maaf ker dein" Baba it's not his fault please forgive him she had stated softly Mishraji had turned around to face her, he stood transfixed..... she was everything he had wanted in his daughter in law. She had grace, poise, and exuded a pious radiance off her. How could he stay mad at such an angelic beauty "Kyun larki kab ki tum ney shaadi iss sey? or kaisey ker li?" When did you marry him and how? Mishraji had tried hard to appear upset as he saw Prachi's eyes well with tears. "Baba meri Daadi ki tabiyat buhut kharab hai or unki antim iksha yehi hai keh meri shaadi eik achey ghar main ho jaye, Milind ko Preeti key liye eik achi maa ki zarurat thi or mujhey unki dawai key liye paison kii iss liye hum ney.........." Baba my grandmother is sick her last wish being that I get married in a respectable family, Milind required a mother for his daughter and i needed money for my grandmother's treatment so we... her voice trailed off as she swallowed the lump in her throat. "Lekin agar aap iss shaadi ko nahin maaneingey to main nahin aaungi aapkey ghar" But if you don't accept this marraige I won't come to your house she had reasoned with newfound strength and Prachi had meant every word of it. If indeed Milind's father did not accept her she would not press the issue further and return home.
This whole act had been penned by Ali though both Milind and Prachi were against it initially but there was no other way out and they had given in. She stood rooted her eyes spilling tears as she twisted her fingers in misery this was harder than she had thought, Milind was not happy too he couldn't see either Prachi or his father depressed. Mishraji had smiled reaching forward he had taken Prachi's hands in his own "Mazaq bhi nahin ker sakta kiya main ab apni bahu key saath?" Can't I joke with my daughter in law? he had asked her lovingly and Prachi had broken down sobbing meekly as she bent to touch his feet he had pulled her close to him kissing her forehead with love "Betiyan pair nahin chuuteen or ab chal tera ghar kab sey teri raah dekh raha hai." Daughters don't touch feet now come on your house has awaited you long enough Milind had exhaled deeply and Ali had wiped his brow in relief vowing never to act cupid to anyone else in life. He had had a tough time trying to pacify Preeti who had wanted to be held by her father but any distractions would've marred the effect of the drama at hand and he couldn't afford that any cost."Papa" Preeti had wailed uncontrollably tears flowing from her eyes as she cried in desparation and Milind had gathered her in his strong arms. "Sorry jaanu I'm so sorry" he had whispered as he stroked her hair kissing her with love, he hated himself for causing so much pain to his daughter, Preeti sobbed against him her tiny heart bursting with happiness feeling his tender touch. Sighing he cast a sad look at his whereabouts what was he doing fooling his own father, lying to himself that all would be alright......... what an idiot he was to listen to Ali but what had been done could not be undone. "Chal ab mujhey bahu key ghar ley chal iskey mata pita sey bhi to baat kerni pareygi.....unko bataya keh nahin ab tak?" Now take me to her place we'll have to talk to her parents also... do they know about this yet? Baba had inquired and all three had hung their heads in remorse Premlata didn't even have a clue of all this. Prachi's tears ran freely down her cheeks she knew how much her mother had looked forward to this day but none of this was real she'd have to lie to her too, shame and agony inflicted her soul deeply. Baba had comforted her as she wept silently "Arey main huun na beta main baat ker luunga ab chal ley chal mujhey apney ghar." I'll talk to your parents don't worry now come on take me to them. The truth was Baba had wanted to meet Prachi's parents first hand though touched as he was by Prachi's persona he wanted to free his mind of the plaguing thoughts about her family. Ali's words that she was poor rang in his ears. Her financial status did not matter to him but her family background did and he wanted to know all about her before she entered his house as his daughter in law.
Part (B)
Premlata sat on the sofa in the lounge her head bowed low her stomach churned at the fortuitous turn of events; her daughter had gotten married and she was the last one to know, her own mother. She had not expected this of Prachi, her eldest child, her pride, her hope; how could see take such a major decision on her own. It was not that Prachi had married without her consent or that she had gotten married to Milind that had shocked her it was the fact that she had felt the need to hide her thoughts from her which hurt her deeply. She had always considered Milind as a son and she knew he would prove to be a perfect husband for her daughter she would never have objected to the match.... had she known. "Dekhiye behenji jo hona tha woh to ho gaya ab humain in bachon key faisley ko maan lena chahiye, shayad kismet ko yehi manzur tha" Listen sister whatever had to happen has happened maybe it was destined this way we should accept our children's wishes now.Baba had advised Premlata who still seemed in shock. Casting a long and despondent look at Prachi Premlata had turned to Baba "Jaisa aap theek samjhein, ab yeh aapki amanat hai" Whatever you wish she is your responsibility now saying so she had left for the kitchen bringing sweets for Ali, Milind and Baba who had reluctantly nibbled at them. Preeti had found solace in her father's lap who fed her bits of sweetmeat from his own portion. Milind had stolen a glance at Prachi who stood paralysed in a corner her red veined eyes told her tale of woes Soon he had promised her in his mind's vision Soon you'll have all the happiness in the world right at your feet. It was decided that a reception party would be arranged for the newly wedded couple where Milind could introduce his wife to the world, but before that Prachi would go home with Milind to prepare for the evening's festivities.
Baba had heard of Inder Shah and was quite happy to know that his daughter in law hailed from a respectable family he was touched by the aftermath of Inder's death and had promised Premlata to treat Prachi as his own daughter. Ali had left with a satisfied Baba there was a lot to do for the evening's party and he intended to leave no stone unturned for the celebration, Baba had decided to accompany him he had to break this wonderful piece of news to his sister , the auspicious day they had been waiting for was finally here. Preeti and Milind sat in the lounge while Prachi quietly packed her bags she had not expected it to go this way she knew her mother had been hurt and it broke her to think that all this wasn't even true what would she tell her when she returned after four months. That it was all a farce, a hoax she knew too if she told Premlata it was for Dadi's medical treatment she'd never let her proceed with the plan and it would all go to waste, she had to keep her silence. She only hoped all this heartache would serve her purpose in the days to come, wiping away her tears she stuffed her clothes in her suitcase hurriedly.
As Prachi packed her things Premlata had handed Milind an expensive Swiss watch Inder had given her to safekeep a long time back. "Yeh" This he looked at her in confusion "Prachi key Papa ney liya tha tumharey liye" Prachi's father had bought it for you she had clarified "Merey liye?" For me? he echoed in disbelief. "Jaantey ho beta main tumhain ussi din pehchaan gayi thi jis din pehli baar tum humarey ghar aaye they, keh tum Milind ho, Milind Mishra. Woh Milind jiski merey pati ney madad kii thi, jiski kaamyaabi ki aarzoo Inder ney kii thi or jiski khushiyon key liye mainey din raat prathna ki hai." I recognised you the day you stepped in our house the first time, that you'r Milind , Milind Mishra. Someone my husband had helped and hoped that he would triumph and someone who's happiness I've always prayed for. Milind had stood up in alarm she had known who he was all this while, then why did she not inform him earlier. "Aap yeh sab kaisey jaanti hain?" How do you know all this? he had inquired perturbed Premlata realized the news wasn't a very joyous one afterall he hadn't even let her know about him being her daughter's boss in the first place. He had gone to great lengths to conceal his identity and to realize that she knew of it all along was upsetting. She made him sit back on the sofa near her informing him that she had suspected Inder of being involved in suspicious activities during Milind's stay in the prison, Inder would fix secret meetings, make late night calls to lawyers and pore over his case details in the wee hours of the night. Initially she had considered it some business ordeal that had gotten into Inder's system and had him worked up. But one night Inder had fallen asleep reading his case proceeding the papers had been left unattended Premlata had found him missing from her side and had gone to check on him. She had found him and the papers in his study and having read through them had been enlightened on the entire issue she had not only felt immense joy but also incalculable pain. On the one hand she was overjoyed to see Inder fight tooth and nail to save this young man who she firmly believed had been wrongly accused on the other hand it saddened her to think that Inder had not found it necessary to confide in her.
A newspaper clipping of Milind being walked to the courthouse on his earlier trial had been cut and kept safe by Inder, Premlata had studied his face with interest the depths of his soulful eyes were filled with pain and sorrow and her lips had moved in a prayer for him at that moment. She had not mentioned her discovery to Inder or to anyone else but the night Milind had stepped in her house she had been flooded with memories. She waited for him to give her a clue of his relatonship with Inder but he never had and she had considered it best to let it be that way. Things were different now he was her son in law and it was obligatory for her to fill him in with the little details that she knew. Milind had listened to her explanation with patience her respect increasing in his eyes with each new revelation he understood now why he had been compelled to touch her feet the first time he had met her. Why it felt as if he had known her all her life because unknowingly they both had known each other it was an unnamed bond though it had a name today, he wanted more than that.
Stepping down from the sofa he sat cross legged in front of her "Agar aaj main aap sey kuch mangun.... dengi aap mujhey?" If I ask you for something tonight will you give it to me? he had asked hesitantly, Premlata had run her hand through his hair smiling "Kiya chahiye tumhain?" What do you desire? she had inquired gazing at him fondly "Aap ko maa kehney ka haq chahiye mujhey" I want the right to adress you as mother he clasped her hand in his own kissing it with veneration. "Vaada kijiye keh chahey zindagi main kuch ho jaaye aap yeh haq mujh sey nahin cheenaingi. Meri maa to Sukriti key janam key baad hii chal bassi, hamesha uskey pyar ko tarsta raha sochta tha kismet ney ussey mujh sey buhut jaldi cheen liya lekin aaj main chahta huun keh aap mujhey apna beta bana lein or is rishtey ko nibhaney ka haq dein." Promise me that no matter what happens in life you'll always consider me your son. My mother died after my sister Sukriti's birt. I always pined for her love I thought it was cruel of fate to take her away from me so soon. But I want you to accept me as your son today and give me the right to act as one. Milind had never felt so weak in his entire life he desperately wanted to set things right most of all he wanted to know how it felt to have a mother, it had been a long time since his own mother had died from cancer.
Sukriti had been a year old and he himself was barely five not old enough to understand the irrepairable loss her death would cause him to suffer. "Beta to main ney tumhain ussi din maan liya tha jis din pehli baar tumhari tasveer dekhi thi" I'd considered you a son the day I saw your picture she had patted his cheek affectionately. "Aapka dil dukhaya haina mainey or Prachi ney kaash keh koi aur tareeqa hota..." Prachi and I have hurt you I wish there had been some other way his voice had trailed off his eyes downcast with shame. Premlata had gently held his face in her hands and turned it up to make him look at her "Jaantey ho Milind agar iss shaadi sey sab sey zyaada khush koi hai to woh main huun. Aaj agar Inder zinda hotey tumhain apna damad paa ker unka sar garv sey uth jaata unhain tum per buhut yaqeen tha or mujhey Inder key yaqeen per yaqeen hai. Tum sey acha jeevan saathi Prachi key liye ho hii nahin sakta." If anyone is the happiest out of this wedlock it has to be me. If Inder would've been alive today he'd have been proud to have you as his son in law. He had faith in you and I have faith in his faith. There couldn't be a better husband for Prachi than you. Bending down she had kissed his forehead a tear breaking from her eye vanishing in his thick curls. Standing in the doorway to her room Prachi had watched on with amazement the bond Milind had formed with her mother seemed extremely strong and she hoped it would weather the storms that fast churned beneath the seemingly calm exterior of their relationship at the moment.

Part 33
Prachi had walked out of her room carrying her suitcase Milind stood up and retrieved the case from her, "Maa " Prachi had tried to speak but Premlata had ignored her adressing Milind before she could utter another word. "Iska khayaal rakhna Milind aaj sey yeh tumhari zimmedaari hai, isskey Papa ney buhut pyaar sey paala hai issey or unkey baad mainey puri koshish ki hai keh issey kabhi koi dukh na ho tum bhi is baat ka khayaal rakhna." Prachi stood mutely, visibly shaken her mother had ignored for the first time in her entire life she did not recall Premlata ever giving her the cold shoulder since she had been born. More than mother and daughter they had been friends and now that beautiful bond had been broken because of a lie. Part of her wanted to tell her mother everything right down to the last detail but there was too much at stake, fresh tears graced her cheeks and she had wiped them away impassively. Milind shook his head in the affirmative reaching down to touch her feet with Prachi following suit. "Tum dono ki jodi sada salamat rahey" she had blessed them handing Preeti to Prachi who had been engrossed in stuffing her mouth with sweetmeats all this while and was extremely happy when Premlata kissed her tenderly enclosing a morsel of the sweet in her small palm.
As she stepped out of her house Prachi had cast a despairing look at it's closed doors her heart felt as if it had been torn to shreds she couldn't decide what effected her more her mother's silent acceptance of her lie or her indifference to herself. She followed Milind down the wooden stairs and in the Kompressor which had come to life as she closed the metallic door and soon sped on the tarmac road to her new abode. She gently patted Preeti who had found a few cds and proceeded to scratch marks on their surface, normally Milind would've taken them from her and placed them in the glove compartment but today he was too absorbed in his own train of thoughts. There were still Bua and Naintara to introduce Prachi to, he understood Bua would be the hardest to convince she knew Milind inside out and if she became suspicious of their marraige as an act everything would fall apart. He had to call Shashank too a lot of misunderstandings could crop up if he didn't know the truth before hand. Also he had to fix an appointment with Dr Deepa for a complete check up for Prachi's daadi he had to fulfill all his promises. He viewed Prachi from the corner of her eye who seemed oblivious of her surroundings, her cheeks were smeared and her eyes were listless she stared out of the window watching the trees rush past, her hands hugged Preeti close who did not mind being held on to. He hoped in time he would be able to restore her smile on her face one that would be true and everlasting.
As the white columned mansion loomed in view Prachi sat up straight she wiped away any traces of tears on her face and composed herself she had to play her part now and she had to play it well. They entered the garlanded doorway when she heard a raspy voice cry out "Wahiin ruk jao". Prachi shivered slightly as the owner of the voice appeared in full view she was an old woman with knotted hands and a wrinkled face, her hair and saree both were the same shade of white she walked with an ebony cane limping slightly even though she appeared feeble Prachi could see she was still very much in command of herself. Her posture was upright her manner firm and the way her grey eyes searched Prachi's countenance it scared her, Milind had noticed Prachi's face drain when Bua had approached her and automatically his hand had slipped in hers, their eyes had met and Milind's eyes had assured her gently. "Prachi yeh Bua hain meri, Chandigarh sey aayi hain or Bua yeh Prachi hai meri patni" he had introduced her to the elderly figure and both had bent down to gain her blessings touching her feet with reverence. "Jeetey raho" Bua had exclaimed rigidly touching their heads as they straightened up. Naintara had appeared then she was a bright bubbly character clad in a bright blue salwar suit that looked as if it had been purchased at a flea market. Her oiled hair was pulled in a tight braid with a vibrant ribbon woven through the ends, even in the early hours of the day it appeared as if she was set to attend a party with matching high heels and bold shades on her lips and cheeks. One look at her and Prachi understood why Milind had assented to carry on with the fake marraige idea in the first place. She was a bit clumsy too as she nearly dropped the small pot of rice she carried placing it in front of Prachi she performed the aarti for both Milind and Prachi and then urged Prachi to tip the contents of the pot . Prachi had turned to Milind when Bua had cut in "Ab kiya grahe pravesh key liye bhi pati sey ijazat maangey gi?" she had inquired acridly feeling embarassed at having been caught in the act Prachi had put out her foot and nudged the copper pot tipping the rice. As she walked forward Naintara had placed a copper plate infront of her it seemed to be filled with some red liquid, picking up her salwar a bit Prachi had stepped in it leaving crimson marks behind her as she trudged on.
So far so good Milind had thought when Ramu kaka had entered carrying Preeti who had clung on to the old servant as soon as she saw him, "Chocat!" she had exclaimed searching his shirt pocket in hope of finding one. "Detey hain bitiya ander to chalo" he had laughed carrying her inside the house. Baba and Ali had returned from their visit to the caterer and decorator smiling in bliss they had informed everyone present of the evening's party Baba had though called up Bua to inform her of Prachi's arrival beforehand. Milind could see how much all this had meant to his father whose face shone with exhileration. "Baba aap khush to haina?" he had asked dubiously and Baba had hugged him in exuberance "Khush nahin buhut khush huun" he replied kissing his forehead fondly, seeing Prachi stand beside Milind he had directed her to her room. Milind had not wanted to be there with her alone and had stayed behind on the pretext of discussing the evening's arrangements with Ali. Her luggage had been shifted there earlier and stood in a corner of the room.
Prachi stood mesmerized by the sheer size and luxurious nature of it, it looked as if it had been cut out from a designer magazine. The room was spacious done in pale oyester pink , a sleek King sized Chaplin bed made of pine solids and figueira veneers enhanced with a cherry tobacco finish adorned the north wall besides it stood a wardrobe of the same make and texture, to the south wall stood an intricately patterened dresser with a huge Belgian mirror atop. The floor was solid Italian marble with swirls of greyish streaks and a single rose patterened Persian rug was placed near the foot of the bed. A solid pine table with an upholstered pine chair stood beside the dressing table it appeared to be Milind's workplace complete with a laptop, files and ashtrays. She roved her eyes to absorb the splendour pale pink laced curtains fluttered by the huge windows a set of richly draped Caslon sofas were tucked away beside them the room spelt class right down to the French chandelier that hung from the ceiling, although it was exquisite Prachi had a feeling of profound loneliness that seemed to be etched in the room. There was not a single photograph of the occupants and not one ornament that wasn't designer made it lacked warmth and life, so this was her room for the next four months sighing she had reached for her suitcase and started unpacking her stuff.
Naintara had run in helter skelter some time later "Prachi shaam kii party main kiya pehnogi?" she had inquired breathlessly dumping herself on the large bed. "Kuch bhi" Prachi had replied frazzled by her sudden appearance. "Arey party to tumharey liye hai to phir kuch acha pehenna na, Bua ney merey liye eik red jora liya hai woh duun tumko?" she had offered "N..Nahin woh merey paas hain kaprey Naintara tum fikar nahin kero" Prachi had stammered she could well imagine Naintara's choice. Milind had come up to collect an important file he planned on going to the office some urgent affairs needed to be attended to when he saw Naintara trying to persuade Prachi to wear her red dress for the evening, Prachi looked flabbergasted and despite the tensed atmosphere Milind had smiled, she needed to be saved. Stepping in his room he had cleared his throat informing them of his presence, Naintara had risen up from her seat on the bed "Naintara main tera kiya huun?" he had asked advancing slowly towards her Naintara looked as if she'd been fed to the sharks. "Milind bhaiyya .... aaa aap to bhaiyya hain na merey" she had stammered "Good girl Naintara..... aur Prachi meri kiya hai?" He had asked again his steps still advancing in her direction his tone low. "Woh to aapki patni hain na" she had answered humbly "Excellent Naintara iss rishtey sey woh teri kiya hui?" Milind stood inches away from her his hands pocketed in his trousers as he stood boring his eyes in her trembling form "B...bhabhi" she had muttered gritting her teeth. "Aaj sey issey naam sey pukara to mujh sey bura koi nahin hoga" Milind had warned her before walking to his table and picking up the required file.
Not wishing to be interrogated or threatened further Naintara had shot out of the room in a flash. "Aap ney to dara diya ussey" Prachi had said softly "Kam az kam ab tujhey uska lal jora to nahin pehenna pareyga" he had tried to put her at ease. "Haan" she had smiled a thin watery smile. "Aap shaam main kiya pehnaingey bata dijiye main press ker dungi" she had asked him before he turned to leave "Ali dekh leyga merey kaprey" he told her walking away before stopping midway, he turned around to find her gaze at him "Abhi Saadia aayegi uske saath shopping ker lena or agar kisi cheez ki zarurat ho to mujhey call ker dena" he had stated when he heard her voice. "Aap maa ko bula lijiye woh......... merey kehney per nahin aayeingi ...... please" she had implored and his feet had been directed to her automatically. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears as she looked at him hopefully and he knew it must've taken every ounce of her energy to hold them back. "Woh aayengi Prachi yeh mera vaada hai" he had touched her face lightly and she had closed her eyes in gratitude tears fell down her cheeks in his palms "Thank you Milind.... thank you so much" she had whispered clasping his hand in her own.

Part 34
Even though he had reached the office his thoughts still revolved around Prachi he just couldn't get her out of his mind the cabin seemed empty without her by his side. He stepped in the nursery to see it lifeless and vacant why did he miss her so, he shouldn't he chided himself. It was not as if she was gone forever, he raked his fingers through his hair greatly disturbed. Till they ended this act she had to remain home now take care of his family most of all make them believe that their relationship was for keeps but that was what he wanted her to do not what she desired herself. He had to make amends soon that too, flipping his cell phone open he dialled Shashank's number but even after countless attempts when it remained unreachable he tried his residence next. At the fourth ring it was answered by his servant who on enquiry explained that Shashank had left for Venice for an urgent business meeting and would be back in a month's time. Damn Milind had thought as he snapped the phone shut a month would be too long he had tried probing the servant to provide him details of Shashank's Venetian residence but the servant had denied any knowledge. Milind hoped things carried on as planned and he'd have normality restored in his life soon.
Right now everything seemed to be in chaos his life was one big ball of tangled yarn that threatened to entangle further with his current emotional turmoil. He was drawn to Prachi in some indefinite way he couldn't understand what he felt for her. Flashes of the night spent with her at the apartment often assailed him he knew he had thought then that he loved her but the question was that did he really. Was it the heat of the moment that had caused him to react and think that way and if indeed it was then why did he feel this inexplicable happiness in some remote corner of his heart that she would indeed be known as Mrs Prachi Mishra. Frustrated he had slammed the file on the table this was lunacy she was Shashank's, she loved him and he had a right on her even Inder Shah had approved their match then who was he to intrude. Atleast Shashank hadn't served jail time he had a clean track record not like him who would forever be known as a cold and heartless murderer.
He wondered if Saadia had taken Prachi shopping with her yet, he called home to be informed by Kaka that they had indeed left for the mall gathering his vagrant thoughts he tried to concentrate on the figures on his laptop screen. Ali had called up later to inform him that he had bought his sherwani and wanted him to try it out "Magar yahaan kaam hai Ali" he had tried to wheedle out "Kuch nahin sun raha main sharafat sey aa jaa main intezaar ker raha huun tera". Madhu had tapped at the door then being let in she had come to inform him that he had a meeting with a prospective client that afternoon which he had called off, he knew he'd be dead meat if he didn't try that cursed sherwani. Madhu had inquired about Prachi and Milind had informed her that she wouldn't be attending office anymore atleast not till the next four months. She hadn't questioned him further but her eyes indicated she was still curious about the reasons for Prachi's sudden disappearance she turned to leave when Milind had asked her about Prachi's friends at the office.
Madhu had dutifully provided him with the names. "Tell them to attend their friend's wedding reception today 8:00 pm at Mishra House Andheri East" picking up his coat he switched his lap top off ."Oh by the way you'r invited too" he had added as an after thought and Madhu had smiled at him, one that had caused him to smile back at her. Well atleast she'd have her friends to keep her company he had thought donning his shades as he sauntered to the parking lot if the world had to know about them then it would know it in style.
Mishra House glittered like a jewel against the night sky adorned with amber lighting.Gold flood lights washed the entire patio and lawns outside, to give it a warm feeling. The guests seating arrangement was done the classic way every table had a lilac tablecloth underlay and a gold organza overlay with gold chivari chairs. Clear glass votive candles were placed with long-stemmed crystal vases and flowers in deep lilacs and pale pink. Spotlights from above illuminated the beautiful floral arrangements on the balustrades and columns inside the mansion. It seemed like a fairy tale to Prachi who had always wished for her prince in shining armour to come and whisk her away on his white stallion, they'd dance to their heart's content at their wedding ball. But now that he was here it was all a dream, one that would finish soon and all that would be left of it would be heartache and pain. She had bought a beauteous gold lehenga with crimson undertones that had hand-done embroidery and crystals all over with Saadia that day, she hadn't wanted to but Saadia had bought an expensive matte gold designer set encrusted with rubies and moonstones to go with it. Her dress lay on the bed looking breathtaking but it felt so surreal it felt as if she were committing a crime one that was not redeemable at any cost.
Unable to bear it anymore she broke down slumping by the large bed sobbing hysterically. "Aakhir kyun, yeh merey saath hii kyun hota hai. Kyun meri har khushi key peechey dukh kii parchai hoti hai... Kyun meri zindagi ka sab sey bara jhoot hii merey mann ka sab sey bara sach hai..." she was completely overcome with misery she had waited for this day all her life and now when it was here it wasn't even true. Ali had been busy putting last minute touches to the decorations on the upper floor when he saw Prachi in that state in her bedroom. "Kiya hua Prachi?" he had asked her greatly alarmed to see her in that condition "Bhaiyya mujh sey nahin hoga yeh" she had wept "Main kaisey duun sab ko dhoka?" she had questioned him in agony hiding her face in her palms. Ali had sat down on the bed near her stroking her head gently he understood her anguish it was but natural in these circumstances."Tujhey kiya lagta hai Prachi aasan hai yeh jhoot jeena Milind key liye, merey liye? Nahin Prachi har pal eik nayi maut martey hain hum yeh soch ker keh jin ko dhoka dey rahey hain woh humarey apney hii to hain." Prachi had stared at him through shiny eyes. "Bhaiyya Maa mujh sey naraz hai mujh sey baat bhi nahin ker rahi, yeh sab bhi mujh sey nafrat kareingey jab inhain sacchai ka pata chaleyga.... main kaisey sahun gi itni nafrat?" she had hiccuped. "Maa baap bachon sey nafrat nahin kertey Prachi or jab inhain poori sachai pata chaleygi to tumhain zarur maaf ker deingey. Manzil tak jaaney waala har raasta aasan nahin hota Prachi buhut saari takleefain, dukh or dard hotey hain us raastey per lekin hum phir bhi uss per chaltey hain umeed key saharey." He wiped her tears away "Jo pal miley hain inhain jeo Prachi har lamha apney or Milind key liye yaadgar banao itna keh phir woh tum sey eik pal key liye bhi duur nahin reh sakey or yeh jhoot sach ban jayye. Pyaar main buhut taaqat hoti hai Prachi aur uska asar waqt key saath hota hai" he smiled at her patting her cheek. "Ab itney lambey bhaashan key baad eik smile to milni chahiye mujhey" he had joked and she smiled through her tears. Prachi had kissed his hand with gratitude "Thank you bhaiyya" she had mumured, leaving her to get dressed he had sauntered out of the room there still was Milind to deal with.
"Main nahin aaungi Milind" Premlata had stated defiantly "Maa aap samajhti kyun nahin aap nahin aayengi to kiya jawab duunga main Prachi ko mainey vaada kiya hai uss sey aapko saath laaunga" Milind had tried to reason with her. "Milind yeh mera aur uska maamla hai tum beech main mat paro" she had tried to brush away his pleas. "Maa ghalati hum dono kii hai phir saza akeley ussey kyun mil rahi hai. Aap ney to mujh sey kaha tha keh main uska khayal rakhun ussey khush rakhun lekin uski khushi to aap hain, phir bhala main apna vaada kaisey puura ker paunga." He had implored he understood Premlata's reasons and her choice of treatment towards her daughter but the fact still remained that she was as unhappy as Prachi. He could see she had turned her face away from him in an attempt to hide her tears quietly wiping them "Please maa aapko meri qasam, meri khaatir chaliye wahaan nahin to main samjhunga aapney maaf nahin kiya mujhey." He had yet again tried to convince her and it seemed that he had finally put his point through as she sat down defeatedly on the sofa, "Main wahaan jaungi Milind, uskey liye nahin balkeh iss liye keh yeh farz hai mera" she had stated blandly. "Yeh saree main aapkey liye laaya huun yehi pehenni hogi aapko" he had smiled handing her a wrapped box.
Premlata rose up with the gift in her hand she had asked Krithika to look after Daadi in her absence and proceeded to get dressed. As she adjusted the jade green saree's pallu her eyes rested on Inder's photograph on her bedside table. Walking up to it she had touched his glassed countenance lovingly "Dekha aapney Inder aapki beti kitni bari ho gayi, apney faisley khud leney lagi hai.Yehi chahtey they na aap keh woh apni zindagi khud jiye to dekhiye aaj aapka sapna puura ho gaya kaash aap yahaan hotey Inder to shayad itna dukh nahin hota mujhey" she had wept silently her tears dripping on the photograph as she hugged it to herself. No matter how right her decision Premlata had found it hard to forgive Prachi she had caused her immense misery there had not been a single event or thought that Prachi had not shared with her then why had she hidden this from her she just couldn't understand her motive or reason. She wished Bobby or Soumya had been with her but Bobby had gone to Pune as Soumya had fixed up an interview for him there. His exams been over he awaited the results but his previous academic record was well enough to get him the job in question. If things worked out Bobby could have a permanent job in Pune and he planned on them shifting there for good.

Part 35
The guests had started pouring in and soon Mishra house buzzed with activity Milind had not wanted the party to be a grand affair but Baba and Ali had other plans. They had called all and sundry to bless the couple. Baba in ignorance while Ali had done it knowingly he wanted Milind to be in a tight spot, one that would cause him to think a million times before severing ties with Prachi for good. Prachi's colleagues stood huddled near the tables laden with food. There were: paneer pakoras (fried cheese dumplings), hara kababs (spinach dumplings), fresh fruit, and Vietnamese spring rolls with dipping sauce. Vindaloo, butter chicken, palak paneer( spinach with cheese) and an assortment of rice, fish and sweets followed as main course. These were accompanied by the drinks mocktails ,cocktails and lassi. "Kiya khaun main?" What should I eat ? Reema moaned unable to choose while JC stocked her plate with butter chicken. "Tum kiya thunsney aayi ho yahaan, nadeedi khana nahin dekha kiya kabhi?" You've come here to stuff yourself or what, haven't you ever seen food before ? Sangeeta had criticised Janki who had her mouth full. "To kiya shakal dekhun tumhari, tum maro unkey ghum main mujhey to khaney do" Then should I stare at your face if not eat you can mourn over their unification let me eat in peace. Janki had snapped food was one thing she did not compromise on. Sangeeta had been the one who had been most effected with the news that their handsome and dashing boss had indeed tied the knot with his daughter's nanny. The others had known it coming and had considered it a justified act, afterall Prachi did take care of the child just like her own mother would've. "Sangee kha lo khana aisa na ho gulab jamun khatam ho jayein" Sangee you better eat something before the gulab jamuns get finished JC teased her filling her mouth with the delicate fish, gulab jamuns being Sangeeta's favourite dessert. A few minutes later Sangeeta was seen devouring the scrumptious snacks with her friends oh so what if he got married she loved her husband anyways.
The friends chattered amongst themselves happy for Prachi who they knew was a perfect match for their boss. Prachi watched silently from the balcony in her room she had a perfect view of the sprawling lawns filled with guests, she awaited Milind who seemed to have disappeared at the last moment. The balcony smelt heavenly laced with orchids and roses infact the whole bedroom was stocked with fresh flowers and unlit candles. There were so many people moving on the green practically everyone but none was her own they were all strangers. She saw his Kompressor weave on the paved driveway stopping at the doorway and he had stepped out accompanied by her mother. "Maa" Prachi had whispered in disbelief, Milind had kept his word her mother was very much there though whether she had forgiven her or not was something she still had to find out.
Ali scanned the premises once again "Kidhar reh gaya hai yeh gadha" Where has that fool disappeared he muttered trying desperately to locate Milind when he witnessed him get out of the car with Premlata. Rushing upto him he had greeted her and sent Milind to get ready the guests had already started questioning about the star couple. Leaving Premlata to chat with Bua Milind sprinted up the stairs he found his sherwani on the bed neatly pressed. Picking it up he hurried to the washroom, showering quickly he put on the garment spraying UDV on himself he was ready in minutes. He was about to leave when he glimpsed Prachi in the balcony "Prachi" he called out to her causing her to snap out of her thoughts . As she stepped in the room Milind was caught offgaurd never had he laid eyes on such an exquisite beauty before, she looked ethereal in the gold and crimson lehenga . Her velvet tresses was pinned on either side and flowed freely down her back. Her kohl lined eyes gently lifted up to meet his capturing him in their hypnotic trance. He felt his mouth go dry as he his eyes traced her full lips that threatened to snatch away his senses. She had felt him drown in her beauty and had allowed him to she could feel his eyes take in every detail from the dimple in her cheek to the curl that kissed her forehead. All this while her eyes remaining fixed on her kohlapuris her cheeks changing shades from pink to crimson. "Chalein" Shall we go she had finally found her voice and Milind had returned to reality. Though he still couldn't take his eyes off her was she real he had thought considering it all his dream. It had to be a dream no one could look so bewitching it was just not possible. Stepping forward he had held out his hand to her face as if tranced touching it gently and the warmth it radiated caused him to realize it was indeed a reality. He had stared at his hand and then at her in flustration. Prachi had smiled enjoying his confusion her crimson bangles tinkled as she adjusted her tika one last time. Her ears and neck were adorned with the precious gold set and enhanced her delicate contours. For a split second Milind had wished all of it to be true, Prachi to be his wife his companion and soulmate. Unable to bear his fiery gaze on her Prachi had called out to him again and this time Milind had shaken his head as if trying to shake away his consuming thoughts. Milind himself had been dressed to kill his cream cambric sherwani was intricately embroidered with matching thread and bead work. He had a crimson stole around his neck to go with Prachi's dress which had only served to enhance his dashing persona. His deep charcoal eyes shone with happiness his lips smiling in jubilation "Chal" Come he had smiled listening to the musical tinkling of her ornaments as she walked alongside him. Prachi had taken a long look at his rugged features her eyes kissing his lips before joining him. As they descended the stairway countless eyes had set on them and all present had considered it a match made in heaven.
They had done the usual rounds greeting the guests accepting blessings and smiling warmly at everyone. Most of them had expressed surprise on their decision but Milind had simply kept mum at all queries whoever said Silence is golden was a true scholar Milind had thought then. Prachi had desperately tried to have a word with her mother who it seemed had made it a point to avoid conversation with her at all costs. Once when she had her cornered her friends had closed in on her showering her with kind wishes and congratulating her. Some even went to the extent of asking tips from her on landing Milind she had smiled wryly at their remarks the truth was so different from what they perceived. They had taken turns at looking after Preeti keeping her company who had enjoyed playing with them. She looked picture perfect dolled up in a frilly satin frock her curls brushed and neatly clipped. She was having a wonderful time enjoying the attention and was at her best behaviour grinning from ear to ear, Naintara had fed her some rice and she now sipped on lassi from Kimmi's glass. Prachi had checked on her from time to time but had found her at peace much to her relief. She had feared Preeti to throw one of her tantrums as she detested crowds and limelight like her father.
Bua had called Prachi to meet an elderly relative as they stood near her Bua had introduced Prachi to the woman. "Rashna yeh hai humari bahu Prachi, Milind ki patni" Rashna this is our daughter in law Milind's wife, Prachi the other woman had adjusted her glasses and peered at Prachi closely. Before she could comment Baba had called her to meet his friend, Rashna's eyes had followed her till a distance. "To kaisi lagi humari bahu?" Well did you like her? Bua had asked proudly she may not have welcomed Prachi warmly but she was secretly elated by her nephew's choice. "Sunder to buhut hai per bura mat manna behen buhut modern hai tumhari bahu" She's really beautiful but please don't mind me saying this she's very modern Rashna had stated staidly to Bua. The remark had left her high strung "Hain kidher sey modern lagi tumko?" How do you find her modern? Bua had questioned her irritably. "Na maang main sindoor na galey main mangalsuter kaisi suhagan hai yeh. Ab modern na hui to kiya hui ?" She's neither sporting vermilion nor is she wearing the black chain worn by married women. Is she not modern then? the other woman had pointed out major flaws in her elegant image. Bua's eyebrows had knit in a frown it bothered her to think that she had not been the one to spot this error and vowed to rectify it soon. Ali who had been busy presiding over the food being refilled nearby had heard each word that had passed between the two women. He had smacked his head in disbelief how could they all have been such fools to overlook such major features, he'd have to get Prachi a mangalsutr fast.
"Mrs Shah kaisi hain aap?" Mrs Shah how are you? a middle aged man had come ambling towards Premlata as she stood in a corner trying to mingle with the crowd. "Main theek huun aapko pehchana nahin mainey" I'm fine I'm sorry but I didn't recognize you Premlata had replied politely. Milind had reached them then he wanted to talk to Premlata so that he might be able to convince her to forgive Prachi. "Mr Milind Mishra buhut khushi hui aap sey milker" Mr Milind Mishra it's a pleasure to meet you the elder man had shaken hands with Milind warmly. Milind was as confounded as Premlata who had tried to search any traces of recognition for the man in question on Milind's face but she had found him to be as clueless as herself. "Aap ney shayad pehchana nahin mujhey bhabhi jee main Amit Verma huun Inder sahab kaa personal secretary hum ney thorey hee arsa saath kaam kiya lekin woh yadein tamam umr key liye kaafi hain merey liye." Mrs Shah I don't think you've recognized me I'm Amit Verma Mr Inder's personal assistant. We worked for a brief period of time but thse memories are enough to last a lifetime Inder's mention had saddened Premlata and Milind was quick to notice that "Aap refreshments lijiye na please" Please have some refreshments he had tried to escort him to the buffet table but the man had other intentions. "Bhabhiji aap ko malum hai yeh wohi Milind Mishra hai jiski aap key pati ney madad kii thi. Aaj agar woh zinda hotey to is shaadi sey yaqeenan buhut khush hotey" Mrs Shah do you know this is the same Milind mIshra your husband helped . If he would've been alive today he would've been extremely happy to see this marraige he had smiled genuinely. "Kiya jaantey hain aap iss barey main?" What do you about all this? Milind had asked him in alarm "Main to sab kuch jaanta huun Mr Milind lekin kabhi kissi sey kuch kaha nahin Inder sahab ney qasam jo dii thi mujhey. Per aaj aapko eik saath dekh ker dil khush ho gaya" I know everything Mr Milind but never said anything to anyone because Mr Inder had me promise not to. But tonight seeing you together has greatly elated me he had answered truthfully. Milind had been greatly perturbed Inder had promised never to breathe a word about it to anyone and now this man claimed all knowledge of his past. "Unhon ney shayad aap dono ko bhi kabhi iss baat ki wajah nahin batayi hogi keh unhon ney aapki madad kyun ki...... am I right Mr Mishra?" I don't think he ever told you two why he helped you in the first place.... am I right Mr Mishra? he had inquired Milind whose face portrayed his trepidation. "Haan" Yes Milind had stated sadly "Mainey kayii baar pucha lekin unhon ney mujhey kabhi kuch nahin bataya." I asked him about the reason several times but he never told me anything "Kiya aap jaantey hain Inder ney Milind ki madad kyun kii?" Do you know why Inder helped Milind? Premlata had asked in astonishment "Haan bhabhijee jaanta huun ab merey paas waqt buhut kam hai or iss sey pehley keh yeh raaz merey saath dafan ho jaaye aap bhi issey jaan lein." Yes I do and before this truth is buried with me I would like to share it with you. As it is I do not have much time onmy hands.

Part 36

"Arey Mr Verma aap yahaan kharey hain bhabhi ji kab sey aap ko dhund rahi hain, Sia ko chot lag gayi hai wahaan intizaar ker rahi hain woh aapka. Shayad hospital ley jaana parey" Mr Tandon had informed Mr Verma who had immediately excused himself and had followed Mr Tandon. "Mr Verma baat to suniye" Premlata had tried to stall him but Baba had appeared then. "Behenjii aap ney to kuch khaya hii nahin, Milind tuu kiya khara hai yahaan ja kuch khaney key liye laa inkey liye." "Baba main abhi aaya" Milind had tried to follow Mr Verma who had shot off in haste after receiving the news of his daughter being hurt but Baba held on to him. "Kahaan jaa raha hai chal merey saath" by the time Milind could do or say anything Mr Verma had been lost in the crowd. Both Premlata and Milind were extremely disappointed they had been inches away from finiding the truth and in a split second the tables had turned against them. Baba had escorted them to the table then making them eat dinner he had traced Prachi too and lovingly forced her to join her husband and mother. An awkward silence prevailed as they dined together Milind and Premlata's mind spun countless versions of Mr Verma's side of the story in a short span while Prachi was raided with thoughts of ways and means to apologize to Premlata. Ali had asked a renowned artist to perform at the reception he was a popular singer and had been friends with Milind, he had consented readily to appear at the reception and make it a memorable one. The band struck one of his recent hits "Ladies and gentlemen this one's for Mr and Mrs Mishra, a tribute to love for now and ever. Could the couple have the first dance of the evening please" the singer had requested in his mic. Milind had risen from his seat at the table he hadn't even touched the food the dance was a good distraction from the dissapoinmtment of not getting to know the whole truth. He extended his palm to Prachi who had accepted it readily she too hadn't had anything off her plate and was happy to accompany him to the floor.

Jo khwaabon khayalon mein socha nahin tha
Tu ne mujhe itna pyaar diya
Mein jab bhi jahan bhi kadi dhoop mein tha
Teri zulf ne mujh pe saya kiya

Haan tu hai haan tu hai
Meri baaton mein tu hai
Merey khwabon mein tu yaadon mein tu
Irradon mein tu hai
Irradon mein tu hai

Yehhh we could fall in love
I say I could fall in love
Yehhh we could fall in love
And i say I could fall in love with you

Milind had held on to Prachi gently he was amazed at how perfectly they fit with each other as if meant to be. He had tucked her head under his chin slowly moving to the rythm. He could smell her exquisite fragrance one that intoxicated his senses. Prachi had felt as if she was floating she acknowledged Milind's strong hold around herself and sighed in content something somewhere felt perfect. Putting her arms around him she rested her cheek against his chest hearing it beat incessantly in it's walled confinement. Milind had wanted to live an eternity in that moment he didn't know what lay in store for them and the way his heart lurched everytime he saw her scared him at times. He wondered to what new levels his passion for her might be heightened to during the end of these four months. He tightened his grip around her hugging her to him and had instantly felt her reciprocate he could feel her fingers carress his back as she softly breathed against him. His lips had touched her hair as his hand travelled to her face outlining her jaw and finally cupping it in his palm she felt so soft as if she were made of a million rose petals. She had raised her head to meet his gaze her fingers closing in on his palm as she kissed it tenderly.

Koi bhi aaisa lamha nahin hai
Jisme mere tu hota nahin hai
Mein so bhi jaao raathon mein lakin
Tu hai ki mujhmein sotha nahin hai
Tu hai ki mujhmein sotha nahin hai

Haan tu hai haan tu hai
Meri baaton mein tu hai
Meri kwaabo mein tu yaadon mein tu
Irradon mein tu hai
Irradon mein tu hai

Hai teri innayat tujhse mili hai
Hoonto pe mere hasi jo khili hai
Usse mera chehra chupa bhi na paye
Tujhe paake hasil huyi jo khushi hai
Tujhe paake hasil huyi jo khushi

The singer had touched a raw nerve with that particular song he sang as if there were no tomorrow. Milind could feel Prachi melt against him she stood swaying with him her back resting against his chest her arms entwined in his own. Milind knew they were being watched but he could care less what mattered was here and now she and him together. Prachi had realized something was different with Milind tonight she had been only too happy to revel in his touch forgetting time and space. She stood pressed against him letting him do as he pleased several times she had felt him kiss her hair and had smiled imagining his lips on her own. Milind had feared looking in her eyes once again lest he drowned in them, but he had willed himself to. Pulling her gently away from him he gazed at her longingly her innocent eyes stared back at him, her lips smiling shyly she had lowered her gaze. He had not known why he did that but he was compelled to draw her closer to him once more. Taking her face in his hands he had studied it intently and then bent slightly kissing her forehead tenderly. Prachi had been overwhelmed but not surprised she had expected it and held on to his arms with her hands. Almost immediately the crowd gathered had put their hands together giving them a standing ovation. Milind had smiled as Prachi had held on to his arm her cheeks flaming as she smiled shyly unable to meet his gaze. Baba and Ali had exchanged satisfied glances as both Milind and Prachi stepped off the floor to join them.

Premlata had been a silent spectator to this scene a part of her was happy that her daughter had such a loving and wonderful man as a companion for life, but the other half smarted with her emotional betrayal. Stifling a sob she had made her way to the exit when Prachi had spotted her leaving "Maa" she had murmured her eyes following her mother. She had broken away from Milind walking briskly to the exit "Maa" she had called but Premlata had been out of earshot not being able to hear her calls hurrying further. She had been too distraught with the fact that Mr Verma had known the truth and still she had been unable to be enlightened with it and wished to leave soon. Little had she known that her daughter followed her that instant her only desire to seek her mother's forgiveness. Milind had followed both mother and daughter if there were to be a confrontation he wanted to be there to set things right afterall it was all his doing, he felt responsible for this mess. Premlata skirted the lawns stepping out of the iron gates onto the empty road ahead. Prachi had now started running after her mother a few startled guests had exchanged confused glances at the scene they were further intrigued to see the groom in hot pursuit of his bride. "Maa" Prachi shrieked as she saw the distance increase between them her heavy lehenga posed a problem as she tried to run holding it up with both hands. In her attempt to catch up with her mother she had reached the main road, Premlata had signalled a passing taxi and had boarded it directing it to her home. The traffic had thickened on this side of the road tired and dissapointed Prachi had tried to follow the taxi when she tripped on a stone and fell down heavily her ankle seemed to have twisted slightly. "Maa" she had screamed miserably her hand outstretched as the taxi faded in the distance. She had sat down in the middle of the road clutching her foot in agony looking at the onslaught of traffic that threatened to over run her she was forced to stand up again, her foot aching she ambled forward when an oncoming car's headlights blinded her vision. She had shielded her eyes with her palm when suddenly she felt herself being whisked away by two strong arms. It seemed like a flurry of events and a medly of lights danced before her eyes before her head hit something hard. She had not eaten anything since morning and felt dizzy before eventually passing out into blissful oblivion.

She slowly opened her eyes to find herself in her new bedroom Baba, Ali and Bua sat on the bed and sofa near the windows as her eyes fluttered open Baba had quickly come forward. "Kaisi tabiyat hai beta ab?" he had questioned inspecting her, concern evident from his worried tone. "Milind" Prachi had inquired fearfully she wondered what he would've thought of this. She had promised to help him instead she had done quite the opposite of it. "Woh doctor ko chorney gaya hai main bhejta huun ussey" Ali had informed her exiting the room in haste. A short while later Milind had entered with heavy feet he looked tired and crushed this was not how he had planned his first evening after his so called wedding to go. Yanking off his stole he had crumpled it flinging it on the bed his eyes were cold and indicated ruthlessness. Prachi had struggled to sit up against the pillows she could see he was unhappy more than that he was furious at her and she knew she was the reason. Advancing towards her he had held her firmly by her arms shaking her svelte form thoroughly "Paagal ho gayi thi tuu iss tarah road per kon bhagta hai? Main nahin hota to hospital main hoti iss waqt. Zara ehsaas nahin tujhey Prachi kiya beeti mujh per in sab per, tujhey kuch ho jaata to." He was mad at her more than that he was angry at himself for having let her go after her mother, for not being able to iron out the differences that had cropped up between her mother and her. He knew he was the cause and it killed him to think that if indeed anything would've happened to Prachi he would've been the only one to blame. Prachi had stared at him mutely she was overwhelmed by his unexpected public outburst and trembled in his sinewy grasp her eyes indicating her fright as she blinked them to stop her tears from falling. "Kiya ker raha hai Milind pehley hii iss ki tabiyat theek nahin hai" Baba had intervened irritatedly not at all pleased by his son's bouts of terrorizing anger making him let go of her. Milind had jerked her free causing her to fall back on the pillows scared to the bone he had gone stark raving mad when he had seen her run after her mother on the busy road and when he saw the car lurch towards her his heart had stopped beating. Leaping to her side he had pushed her out of the way and they had both taken a bad fall rolling towards the pavement, she had passed out in his arms and he had carried her all the way back. Once he had entered his house he coud hear hoarse whisperings regarding their condition he knew the news would get around like a wind whipped fire the few guests that were milling around had been sent home by Ali sensing the gravity of the situation. Baba had called the doctor while Milind had carried her to their bedroom laying her gently on the bed. Naintara unaware of the entire scenario had considered this a romantic gesture on Milind's part and as he exited the room she had proceeded to strew the bed with remaining rose petals and had lit the candles. The doctor had been quick to respond and was soon at their doorstep, having checked Prachi's pulse and blood pressure he had ruled out fatigue and exhaustion to be the primary cause of her concussion.

Bua had considered it best for Preeti to spend the night with her grandfather since her parents not only had their first night together but also were not in a mental state to take care of her. Ali and Baba had talked to Milind trying to cool his fiery temper and it had worked considerably at last he consented to return kissing a sleeping Preeti he had left her with Baba before heading for his bedroom. Naintara had been instructed by Bua to take some food to Milind's bedroom in case Prachi desired to eat something. Meanwhile Prachi lay motionless on her bed she did not acknowledge Naintara's presence or her activities as she placed the food on the pine table and chattered on her mind swirled with thoughts. How could she have acted that way she knew what lay at stake how hard they had worked to make this plan a sure success and now she had gone ahead and done this. What would the guests have thought about all this fiasco what would Baba or Bua think, would they rule it out as an inclination of future problems in their son's marraige. Why did she always end up spoiling things for Milind, she tried so hard to please him but eventually it was all thrown in her face. She closed her eyes in agony and awaited Milind's wrath which he was bound to unleash on her once they were alone. She heard the door click shut and had opened her eyes to see Milind enter she arose from the bed and stood beside it. She had tried speaking to him but he proceeded towards the wardrobe, pulling out his kurta he had entered the washroom, splashing cold water on his face Milind had tried to wash away his emotions. He needed to be strong around Prachi and he needed to start doing it from this instant. Yanking off his sherwani he changed in the kurta wiping his face clean he stepped out to see Prachi still standing in the same position. "Milind" she had called out to him mustering her courage, avoiding her he had opened one of his bedside drawers brandishing his packet of cigarettes. Lighting one he had pushed open the large windows and stood smoking the cool night breeze filled in the room causing the curtains to billow rhytmically, he had not once glanced at Prachi's abashed figure. Prachi observed him for a few minutes smoking, quite negligent of her presence in the room her heart burst with unsurmounted infliction she couldn't bear it any more. First her mother now him was she that bad that both the people she loved the most hadn't even considered to give her a chance to speak.
She walked upto him "Milind" she had called still he hadn't responded "Milind kiya main itni buri huun keh ab aap mera chehra bhi dekhna pasand nahin kereingey?" tears fell on her cheeks rapidly. "Mujh sey ghalati ho gayi maaf ker dijiye mujhey" folding her hands infront of him she had closed her eyes unable to bear his accusing look. "Maa to pehley hii mujh sey rishta tor chuki hai agar aap bhi mujh sey baat nahin kareingey to main mar jaungi Milind.... main mar jaungi" she wept convulsively crumpling in a heap on the floor near him. Milind could not bear to see her in such a deplorable condition he stood looking at her huddled figure on the marble her head bent low she cried bitterly. He may have been infuriated with her actions earlier but it was another thing that he simply could not bear to see her cry. Putting out his cigarette he had gathered her in his arms and had carried her to the bed laying her still sobbing form on it. Adjusting the pillows around her he made her lean on them before wiping her tears "Tuu kyun aisa kerti hai Prachi keh mujhey ghussa aa jaata hai. Aaj agar tujhey chot lag jaati to main kiya kerta.... socha tha tuuney?" he had questioned her seriously and she had shaken her head petulantly. Overwhelmed with sorrow she had leaned forward and hugged him holding on to him securely "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" he heard her muffled voice in his ear her hot tears seeping in his kurta soaking his shoulder. He embraced her trembling figure carressing her hair soothing her "Sssshhh bas ab ro nahin" he had mumured against her ear he knew what they were doing was morally wrong but at that specific moment it felt the right thing to do. She was depressed and he couldn't see her that way and that was that. After what seemed like ages she had finally let go of him her tears having subsided momentarily "Mujhey laga Maa sey baat kerungi to shayad woh mujhey maaf ker deingi" she had explained before continuing to sob again. "Kyun itni fikar kerti hai Prachi mainey vada kiya tha Maa ko party main launga...... laya na?" he had asked her touching her cheek tenderly and she shook her head in the affirmative. "To phir tujhey maaf bhi ker deingi woh I promise".... he had assured her "Sach!" she had inquired smiling through her tears looking at him in disbelief elated at his promise "Hmm" he had assented smiling at her.
"Khana khaya tuuney?" he had asked her in an attempt to divert her attention and she had denied guiltily shaking his head as if chiding her he brought the food Naintara had placed on the table to the bed. He knew Prachi hadn't had anything since morning and understood that it was time she had some food else she'd fall sick. Prachi had been about to start with the rice when she noticed a bandage on his right palm, "Yeh kiya hua?" she had held his palm in her soft hands checking out his injury. "Kuch nahin hua" Milind had tried to pull his hand back but she held on it firmly. "Meri wajah sey lagi aapko chot" she had whispered searching his face with glistening eyes. "Nahin yeh to main neechay tha to lag gayi, teri wajah sey nahin lagi" he had lied averting his eyes from her face fearing that she might start holding herself responsible for his wounds. "Jhoot bhi bolney lagey ab aap?" she had inquired unhappily. "Prachi zara see kharonch hai theek ho jayegi" he had reassured her putting his hand to her lips she had let her tears fall on his wound. He had laced his fingers with hers as she held his hand to her cheek. "I'm so sorry Milind" she had whimpered pushing the tray away Milind had taken a seat next to her making her lean against him he draped his other hand around her. No words were exchanged but both knew that they would always be there for each other through thick and thin. Prachi had buried her face in his broad chest smelling his unique fragrance her head felt heavy from incessant crying and his warm embrace soothed her senses she let herself be carried away by his touch. Milind had kissed her forehead softly gently carressing her tresses he was relieved to see that she was finally at peace "Kuch kha ley Prachi" he had told her after several minutes. "Bhuk nahin hai" Prachi had murmured not wanting to be detached from him at any cost. "Thora saa" Milind coaxed her and she had consented Milind then proceeded to feed her spoonfuls of rice. After a few spoonfuls she had taken the spoon from his hands filling it with rice she had extended it to him and he had eaten it in submission. Finishing off the meal Milind had cleared away the dishes Prachi felt too weak to remove any of her accessories or clothes. She rested against the head board of the bed when Milind had made her lie properly on the bed, picking up the other pillow from the bed he himself had tried to make himself comfortable on the sofa.
Prachi had dosed off under the influence of medication soon though Milind had found it hard to sleep. He kept wondering how the next four months would turn out to be. Already their closeness had started having it's effect on them no matter how tried he tried to push her away she held power over him one that would draw him back to her one way or the other. Restless and confused he stood near the windows searching for answers in the constellation above consequently he turned to look at her sleeping form, she looked so delicate and innocent. He heard her moan in pain and was by her side checking to see if she was alright. Her jewellery was too heavy and Milind himself felt choked looking at it. Sitting beside her he carefully removed her accessories piece by piece taking care not to awaken her covering her with a blanket he had proceeded to kiss her softly on her cheek he had not know why but he had then gently felt her lips tracing them lightly. His touch had awoken Prachi who gazed at him silently before kissing his finger softly he carressed her cheek with the back of his hand smoothing her tresses "Good Night Prachi" he had whispered before retiring to the sofa, tomorrow was another day.

Part 37
Prachi had woken up to a different surrounding altogether, she blinked her eyes to make sense of it all as images of the previous night jostled her memory. Her head felt like lead throbbing badly she rubbed her her temples gently before scanning the room. Consequently her eyes rested on Milind's masculine form wedged uncomfortably on the Caslon sofa. An ashtray was kept nearby and the several burnt stubs filling it indicated his nocturnal activities, Prachi was swept with a wave of remorse he hadn't been able to sleep properly because of her. She still felt bad about causing him so much trouble throwing back her blanket she walked up to the sofa where he was sprawled in an awkward position. His feet dangled off the armrest with his head resting on the head rest he obviously had dozed off too tired to lie down properly, picking up the cushion near him Prachi had placed it under his head. She saw her jewellery strewn on the sofa beside him smiling she remembered him taking it gently off her the previous night. She wondered why he kept that facet of his personality so guarded the part that was tender, gentle and caring. She brushed away a few stray curls from his forehead he looked so innocent so childlike in sleep her heart was immediately filled with love for him. On an impulse Prachi had bent down and kissed his cheek lovingly her fingers running over his prickly stubble before brushing over his cupid lips she remembered him feeling her lips the previous night. She wondered what had caused him to do so before turning to the washroom smiling to herself. Milind had awoken up feeling his face grow warm as sunlight streamed from the open windows lighting the room, shielding his eyes he got up. His body ached as he flexed his muscles grimacing as each rewound returning to it's former position. He massaged his neck thoroughly it certainly hadn't done him good sleeping like that, the room was empty he realized Prachi had gone downstairs. She had though not forgotten to keep his towel on the bed with his suit and other daily accessories, he smiled at her thoughtfulness picking them up he had gone to take his shower.
As he came down the stairs twenty minutes later he was surprised to see everyone assembled for the morning prayers. They generally didn't pray together he considered it to be because of Prachi maybe Baba and Bua had wanted to make her feel part of the family. Baba had gestured him to join them and he had taken his place near Prachi, he cast a stray glance at her. She looked mesmerizing dressed in a simple scarlet saree with matching bangles she stood with closed eyes and folded hands praying for absolution. He had averted his gaze to the idols infront of him and clasping his hands together prayed for eternal peace and happiness for them all. As the pooja ended Prachi had taken the platter and had distributed prasad amongst all receiving blessings from Baba and Bua. She had held the platter infront of Milind too who had waved a hand over the aarti and had turned but she held on to his hand which had caused him to stare at her quizzically. She had then gestured to him to eat the prasad but he didn't comply he wasn't very fond of sweets but he had to take it from her when she held out the sweet to him. "Prasad key liye mana nahin kertey" Don't say no to it she had reprimanded him softly he wasn't very keen on prayers and other rituals that followed. Not that he didn't believe in God but it was rather that he considered Him responsible for a lot of injustification in his life and wasn't at the very best of terms with HIM. He noticed Bua eyed them suspiciously and was compelled to eat the prasad when he saw Ali join them, smiling at him he had hugged his friend happily. "Chal nashta ker ab merey saath" Come on have breakfast with me now he had said thanking his lucky stars for diverting Bua's attention. They had turned to leave for the breakfast table when Bua had stopped Prachi "Mangalsutr kahaan hain tumhara? or sindoor kyun nahin lagaya yeh to har suhagan ki nishaani hoti hai" Where is your mangalsutr? and why haven't you applied vermillion it is a symbol of being a married woman pointing towards Prachi's colourless parting she had questioned her acrimoniously. "Woh .... main" I .... uh Prachi stuttered not being able to come up with an appropriate excuse leaving Milind dumbfounded he had not thought of the importance of these accessories and fumed inwardly at his ignorance. Sweat beads had started forming on Prachi's forehead she felt cornered as if caught committing a heinous crime. Her cheeks flamed with compunction Milind had shifted uneasily what would they do now they'd definitely be caught for sure. As if by magic Ali had appeared by their side "Prachi yeh lo tumhara mangalsuter jeweller ney theek ker diya hai main kal dena bhool gaya tha" Prachi here is your necklace the jeweller has repaired it I forgot to hand it over to you yesterday he had said handing her a beaded necklace Milind had thanked Ali via hi eyes and Prachi had breathed a sigh of relief.
As she struggled to put it on Bua had asked Milind to help her. "Dekh kiya raha hai pehna dey issey" What are you looking at help her wear it she had ordered and Milind had glared at Prachi hard making her squirm under his steely stare taking the necklace from her he proceeded to tie it around her neck, their eyes had met then and a strange feeling had overcome both of them. That single piece of jewellery held the power to bind them in one defining relationship neither had known what had passed between them but both had felt it's presence in that one moment, somehow they felt connected, distinctly united. "Aur sindoor " And vermillion Bua still seemed dissatisfied "Chal maang bhar isski" Come on apply it too Bua had ordered him once again. "Bua iskey haath hain khud ker leygi" Bua she has hands she can apply it herself Milind had snapped trying not to let his temper get the better of him what did Bua think he was a puppet. "Pati tuu hai ya yeh" Is she the husband or you she had questioned him "Shaadi bhi kii hai iss sey keh nahin" she had inquired doubtfully and Milind had been forced to answer her bitingly. "Prachi meri patni hai mujhey yeh saabit kerney ki zarurat nahin hai aur yeh sab tamashey mujh sey nahin hotey" She's my wife and I don't need to prove it besides I can't comply with this rubbish he had retorted furiously before leaving for the office. "Milind naashta ko ker lijiye" Milind have your breakfast atleast Prachi had called after him disheartedly "Bhuk nahin hai mujhey" he had answered without looking back. Bua had left in a huff accompanied by Naintara while Prachi watched Milind leave from the doorway in despondence. Why had she forgotten to apply the vermillion if she had none of this would;ve happened. Baba had walked upto her "Kiya Milind ab bhi tujh sey naraaz hai?" Is Milind still upset with you he had asked. "Pata nahin Baba, meri to baat hii nahin ho paayi aaj un sey" I don't know Baba I hardly talked to him today she had answered truthfully trying to put up a brave front no matter how hard she tried she always managed to screw things up for him. "Oho to iss main pareshaan honey wali konsi baat hai tum lunch ley jaana uskey liye aaj, chalo ab nashta ker lo phir dawai bhi leni hai tumko" Oho what's there to worry about you can take him lunch, now come have breakfast you'll have to take your medicines then and Prachi had nodded her agreement before following him.
Preeti had been pretty restless that morning all that partying had a toll on her health she had coughed several times during breakfast much to Prachi's alarm and refused to eat anything. Prachi had thought of taking Preeti along with her a trip to the doctor had been long overdue. Later that afternoon Prachi had dressed Preeti in a red pinafore and white blouse, while she happily played with her doll. Prachi had asked Ramu Kaka to cook Milind's favourite food and had packed it carefully. She had informed Baba that she would be late as she'd be taking Preeti to the hospital and had left. "Bhaiyya aap ko lagta hai Milind bahu sey pyaar kerta hai?" Brother do you think Milind loves his wife? Bua had asked Baba as she watched Prachi carry Preeti out of the door thoughfully, she was still suspicious of the nature of relationship Milind had with Prachi. Her experienced eyes had gauged the awkwardness between the two moreover Milind's denial to apply vermilion in her hair had her doubting them more than ever the fact that the wedding had not taken place infront of them added to her chagrin. "Didi dono ko waqt chahiye aap to jaanti hii hain shaadi kin haalat main hui in dono ney to apney apney parivaaron ki khushiyon key liye shaadi ki hai. Phir sab kuch itni jaldi theek to nahin ho sakta eik dusrey ko samajhney main waqt lageyga inhain." Sister they both need time. You know under what circumstances the marraige took place. You can't expect everything to get right so soon. They married each other out of responsibility towards their respective families they'll need time to understand and know each other. Baba had explained to Bua who did not seem to be impressed with the way things were going. She had expected both Milind and Prachi to act as newly weds which they had failed to she believed they hadn't even consumated their marraige which was evident by the way Milind refrained to have anything to do with her that morning. "Pyaar to ho ker hii raheyga Milind ko iss sey aakhir patni hai iski kab tak bhagey ga iss sey" Milind has to love her she is afterall his wife he can't run away from her Bua had smiled at Baba who had laughed it off. "Shaadi to mainey kerwadi dhamkian dey ker ab pyaar aap kerwa dijiye dono key beech" Well I got them married with my threats now you can make them fall in love he had joked unaware of the fact that Bua was pretty serious about her mission. In her opinion a marraige required love and trust to flourish and sustain and Milind's marraige was going to have all the right ingredients in it.
Sapna had been engrossed in her report for the meeting with the Garewals that evening she was back from her trip to Goa and was already irked with the sight of countless files on her table. Work had piled up for her she did not have a clue of the events that had occured in her absence neither had anyone found it necessary to inform her. She was glad to know that Prachi hadn't come to the office that day and that meant having quality time with Milind under the pretext of helping him. She planned on snooping in Milind's office that evening afterall that was what she was paid for to keep an eye on Milind and his activities. He had called her an hour earlier to go over a few important files that he required urgently and now she was on her way to his cabin. Prachi had reached the office, on her way she had met GD a close friend who was delighted to see Prachi and Preeti had immediately been transferred to her arms. It turned out both GD and Preeti loved M&M's and GD had a packet in her hand which ofcourse had caught Preeti's attention. She stretched her arms to GD who had embraced her immediately kissing her fluffed cheeks. "When she finishes with them bring her to Milind's cabin" Prachi had laughed watching Preeti fish for M&M's in the packet with her pudgy little fingers. As she proceeded towards the office Prachi saw Milind with Sapna in the hallway. His hands rested on the cubicle wall near him while Sapna's head was bent low anyone watching them from her angle would consider them to be rather intimate though in reality both were pondering over a file. Milind didn't seem to mind the fact that Sapna was practically all over him either he was too busy reading the file or he just didn't care. A wave of disgust swept over Prachi she couldn't bear Sapna near Milind as she neared them she saw Sapna smile up at Milind and he had smiled back obviously in appreciation for her hard work. "I'll see you in the meeting then get these printed in individual sets for each board member" Milind had instructed her when he spotted Prachi near them. "Tuu kab aayi Prachi?" When did you come Prachi? he had asked surprised but Prachi had kept silent she had though stared coldly at Sapna and cast a pained look at him before walking away towards the elevator. Milind had followed her in haste leaving a flabbergasted Sapna gape after him, why in heaven's name was Milind Mishra running after his secretary she simply had no clue.

Part 38
Prachi knew she was overreacting but she simply couldn't bear to see Sapna and Milind that close something inside her went wild with fury. She had not known when and how but she had started considering Milind very much her own property. She knew she had no right to put limitations on his actions or thoughts but she just couldn't stay there any longer, she had reached halfway down the corridor when Milind caught up with her. "Kahaan jaa rahi hai Prachi?" Are you going somewhere Prachi? he had questioned her but she carried on walking simply ignoring him. Irritated with her stupid behaviour Milind had caught her wrist angrily "Office main tamasha kerney aayi hai kya?" Have you come to create a scene in the office? he had demanded in an acid tone most of his employees were watching the scene with great interest now. Nothing would be more intriguing to them than a hot gossip on their boss and his newly wedded wife, stopping her from stepping in the elevator he had brought her with him to his cabin. Once inside he had slammed the door shut and turned to face her "Kyun aayi hai tuu yahaan?" Why have you come here? he had inquired splenetically "Main sirf aapka lunch deney aayi thi Baba ney kaha tha aapney nashta nahin kiya to main lunch ley jaun aapkey liye." I've just come to hand you your lunch. Baba had instructed me to bring you some since you hadn't had breakfast. Prachi had replied hotly she was in no mood for his tempestuous behaviour surprisingly she wasn't afraid of him today rather very much annoyed at the scene she had witnessed earlier. She had handed him the food basket before turning to leave again when he had held her by her arm taken aback by her display of exasperation, this was something very new to him.
"Kahin nahin jaa rahi tuu" You'r not going anywhere he declared but she continued to struggle in his iron grip "Chodiye mujhey" Leave me she demanded trying her best to free her wrist of his firm hold. She took a few steps back in an attempt to flee but Milind had covered the distance immediately and soon she stood pinned against the wall feeling his weight on her. Her breathing became erratic as her brain kept reminding her of their proximity. "Chodiye na mujhey" Leave me she had demanded weakly feeling his eyes on her yet today his eyes were not gentle rather they were commanding almost empowering and it scared her to look too long in them. Already she could feel his hot breath fanning her cheek her gaze had dropped to his cupid lips that were turned slightly at the corners she felt as if she would burst into flames if he continued to assault her senses any longer. Milind watched on amused as she tried to pry his fingers open "Yeh haath chodney key liye to nahin pakra hai mainey" I haven't caught this hand just to leave it he had smiled deeply as she gazed at him petulantly. "Aapko mera haath pakarney kii kiya zarurat hai Sapna haina uska haath paker lijiye, aapko ab mujh sey kiya matlab?" Why do you need to catch my hand you have Sapna for that, what would you want me for she could feel tears starting to form but she fought the urge to cry her heart out, tell him that she hated to see him with Sapna. So that was the reason for her ire Milind had thought enjoying her in that state watching her writhing with jealousy he certainly was loving it. He understood Prachi did not like Sapna but that she would be jealous watching them up close was certainly out of the blue he had never known Prachi to display such feelings and was thoroughly humoured by her current emotional turmoil.
Letting go of her hand unexpectedly he had scratched his furrowed forehead thoughtfully "Baat to sahi hai teri ab tuu ghar per hogi to koi to chahiye na mujhey company key liye yahaan. Tuu ney sahi kaha Sapna achi larki hai ab tuu nahin to teri zarurat bhi nahin, chalo Sapna sey kaam chala luunga main" You do have a point now that you'll be at home I'll need someone to keep me company. You'r right Sapna is a nice enough girl now that you aren't here I won't be needing you too I can manage with Sapna and Prachi had gaped at him in horror was he really considering Sapna as her alternative. She had stopped wincing and stared at him in disbelief the last thing that she expected of him was to fall for that cheapshot. "Aap sach keh rahey hain?" Are you serious? she had asked him not able to believe his earlier statement. "Qasam se" Ofcourse Milind had promised promptly trying his best to suppress a smile that threatened to give him away. Prachi stood paralysed momentarily all that he had been doing for her till now was just an act he didn't desire her or need her he was simply using her to fulfill his wants. "Theek keh rahey hain aapko meri ab kiya zarurat" You'r right why would you need me now she had whispered to herself more than to him. Her heart being crushed brutally she wished she hadn't been fool enough to love him so and without waiting for his reply she had run to the door when he had caught her deftly by her waist. "Jaaney dijiye mujhey" Just let me go she had whimpered deeply hurt crying openly but when he did not relent she had tried to push him away a futile attempt on her part as his hold tightened on her slim waist. Milind had thought he'd irritate her a bit but he could see she had taken it all seriously and considered his joke as true. Her hands rested on his chest as she turned away her face from him in an attempt to hide her tears, Milind had been consumed with a burning passion in that moment. One that urged him to make her his, fought his reasoning and desired her madly deeply truly he had held her chin firmly and had turned her face towards his own. Her wet eyelids fluttered as she tried to clear her vision "Kyun satatey hain mujhey itna" Why do you irritate me so she had complained defeatedly closing her eyes in anguish.
He scanned her angelic face now wet with tears her lips pressed tightly to refrain from sobbing before he gently brushed his lips against her eyelids kissing them softly. He felt her muscles relax in his hold as he held on to her his one arm circled her waist while the other cupped her face. His lips trailed from her eyelids down her cheeks tracing her tears to the corner of her plush lips. She had drawn in a deep breath her chest heaving as she held on to him his touch was magical and before she knew it she was melting in his sensuous hold. His hand travelled upto her face and he held it tenderly in his palms she had opened her eyes to meet his unwavering gaze. "Ab kabhi mat kehna keh mujhey teri zarurat nahin....... samjhi" Don't ever say that I don't need you.... understand he had said before pulling her in a warm embrace kissing her forehead passionately somehow he knew she had smiled through her tears hugging him tightly.
In an attempt to keep his emotions at bay he had tried lightening the atmosphere "Waisey buri nahin hai Sapna" Sapna isn't that bad you know he had joked and Prachi had punched him tenderly on his chest. "Woh buri nahin hai to main buhut buri huun kiya?" If she's not bad then am I bad? she had inquired playfully looking at him as his eyes danced with naughtiness. "Nahin tuu sab sey buri hai" No you'r the worst he had replied throwing his head back and laughing in mirth something he had not done in a very long time as she made a face at him. "Main itni buri huun to kyun ley gaye Baba key paas mujhey Sapna ko hii ley jaatey" Well if I'm that bad why'd you take me to your Baba you should've taken Sapna with you she had folded her arms on her chest in mock anger. "Haan or phir Baba hum dono ko ghar sey nikaal detey" Yes and then he would've kicked us both out of the house Milind had replied honestly. Sapna was the last girl his father would've approved of, her tight skirts and fitted blouses would certainly not have allured Baba. "Khaney main kiya hai mujhey buhut bhook lagi hai" What have you brought I'm hungry he had eyed the food basket longingly. Prachi had found a way to get even with him "Aaj to kareley hain.... mainey Ramu Kaka sey specially banwaye hain" Well I asked Ramu Kaka to cook bitter gourd specially for us she had informed him innocently as she saw his crestfallen look. "Tujhey pasand hain?" You like them? he had questioned her "Hmm" she had mused not being able to withstand his despair he was hungry no doubt and the fact that she had brought it for him didn't let him deny eating the food altogether. "Theek hai phir yehi kha letey hain" Well then we'll have this today he had assented half heartedly taking his seat opposite her she had spooned the contents on the plate before mixing the rice and handed it to him.
He had filled the mixture in his spoon absentmindedly and placed it in his mouth but the taste had him pleasantly surprised. "Baingan ka bharta" Aubergine he had smiled jubilantly it was his favourite food and she had been fooling him all along. His smile had indeed lit up his eyes and she watched him eat up the contents with pleasure, there was a knock at the door then and Sapna had entered. "Sir these papers" she had started but Milind had raised his palm signalling her to stop right there. "I'll look at these later Sapna right now I'm having lunch" he had told her. "But Sir if you could just" Sapna had tried to act extra smart when Prachi cut in she still hadn't gotten over her initial displeasure of witnessing her close to Milind. "I think you heard my husband Ms Sapna he'll look at it later. I'd appreciate if you leave now" Prachi had stated to a very shocked Sapna. Husband... when did that happen and it was then that she noticed the black beaded necklace around Prachi's neck. "Fine" Sapna had replied through gritted teeth and turned on her heels. Later that evening she was able to overhear a few colleagues gossip about Milind's wedding bash the previous day and was indeed enlightened on Prachi's wedding with Milind.

Dr Deepa sat poring over Daadi's reports extensively she had been treating Daadi since the past few weeks a complete check up had revealed shocking results. Daadi was suffering from stomach cancer fortunately it was just at it's initial stages and could be removed if it were operated on. The only problem was that it was a sensitive area and the operation had to be done with care and expertise. Dr Deepa though a professional was still uncertain on her single handedly undergoing the entire process. The reason she had asked Milind to get Daadi admitted in the hospital she had contacted Dr John Ferrer a top surgeon renowned for his skill in dealing with patients suffering from Gastric cancer. "Mr Mishra I think it would be best if we wait for Dr Ferrer he'll be here for his annual visit next month. Till then I think we can discuss the case with him and meanwhile we can get the Gastrscopic exam and Abdominal CT scan done. This way we'll have a fair idea of the invasion of the cancer cells into adjacent tissues, or the presence of spread to local lymph nodes."

Milind nodded his head assenting with everything she said the truth was he was too shocked to speak or do anything he knew Prachi loved her grandmother a lot. She was her support system and had been like a solid pillar of strength for her family during these trying times. Now she was ill and that too to such an extreme level, the chances of Daadi recovering from the operation were bright but making Prachi understand all this would be a difficult task one that he was dreading already. "When do I get her admitted?" Milind had finally gathered courage to ask the doctor "I'd suggest soon Mr Mishra I would really like to start with the chemo therapy before the surgery so that the cancer may atleast be shrunk to a certain level that would make operating it easier." "Fine then I'll bring her in tomorrow" Milind had informed her so that the required paperwork could be taken care of till the next day. "By the way Mr Mishra" Dr Deepa had turned round to face Milind "Do you by any chance have a twin brother?" she had grinned at a confounded Milind. "Not that I know of" he had replied watching her cheeky face as she adjusted her glasses on the bridge of her nose. "Just my luck" she had laughed and Milind had smiled whole heartedly before thanking her for her help and exiting her office.
Milind had sent Prachi home with Preeti after getting her checked it turned out Preeti had contracted a viral infection but would soon be fit and fine. He had then proceeded to have a detailed talk with Dr Deepa he knew Prachi would be upset when she'd know he had gone to meet the doctor behind her back but that was something he was ready to deal with. If indeed Prachi had come to know of her grandmother's serious condition she would've fretted over it to no end and that was the last thing he wanted. But he had to inform Prachi's mother about Daadi's condition and persuade her to let him get her treated. As he sprinted to his car he bumped into a man obviously on his way out too, "Sorry" Milind had apologized bending down to pick up the man's file that he had dropped due to the collission. "It's ok" Mr Verma had replied thankfully he had been here to see the doctor regarding Sia's fractured arm. "Aap" You Milind had gasped in wonder just when he thought he had lost all hopes on finding out the truth here stood the man who knew all about it. "Aaj to aapko mujhey sach batana hii hoga Mr Verma" You'll have to tell me the truth today Mr Verma Milind had demanded forthrightly. "Buhut intizaar kiya hai mainey iss pal ka aur mujh sey zyaada shayad Maa ney. Aap chaliye merey saath unkey paas..... abhi". I've waited for this moment for a long time and more than me I guess my mother has waited for it. You'll have to come with me today... to her, now.
"Theek hai" Fine Mr Verma had consented readily he too had wanted this burden off his chest before he left for his final destination. Mr Verma had been sick suffering from Cirhosis consumption of alcohol in large quantities over the years had led him to his ultimate destination contraction of the fatal liver cancer. He had tried to make contact with Inder in an attempt to plead him to take care of his family after his demise but was shocked to know that Inder himself had passed away. All his hopes being dashed to the ground he had then decided to have a word with Milind in an attempt to persuade him to act as care taker to his family when he no longer breathed. Unaware of Mr Verma's mental distress and physical depletion Milind drove on to the chawl house, today finally he would know why Inder had taken the initiative to revive his drowning soul and save him from eternal damnation.

Part 39
It had been a bright sunny morning a new beginning to a new day Inder had a major contract to bag today he was confident on him winning it. He had toiled hard at it burning the midnight oil even at this age he did not shun away from hard work. The meeting had been attended by top hoteliers of the country the contract was a major one and all had hoped on landing it. The major shock came when the tender had been handed to 'Sikcand group of Hotels' not only were they new to the field also they lacked the knowledge and capability to handle such a mammoth task. Inder was enraged and irritated someone in his office had leaked the quotations to Sikcand else how could he have lost the tender by a minimum difference of one rupee, he had reached his office furious and had asked Mr Verma to look into the matter. Mr Verma was an honest and selfless employee one who put his job above everything else. Days later he had informed Inder about the weak link in his company a certain Kabir Kaushal who had aims to make it big through all the wrong ways. Inder had hired him out of sympathy he hailed from a penurious background and was responsible for many in his family but Inder's generosity had caused him to lose a coveted deal. He had not confronted Kabir immediately but had asked Amit to keep an eye on him, follow him around and find out his contacts. Amit had done as told and soon the chain of events led them to understand that Kabir was Sikcand's spy whom he had planted in Inder's office to keep him abreast with Sah Industries' internal affairs and details. He was the reason Sikcand had known of their quotations beforehand and had changed his at the last moment resulting in his victory. Inder had fumed inwardly his hard work had gone to waste just because of that scumbag Sikcand but before he did anything against him Inder decided to have a word with him. If he accepted his deceit then Inder would warn him not to repeat the mistake twice and if he didn't Inder would be forced to take strict action against him. Amit though had advised him otherwise he knew people like Sandiip Sikcand never redeemed themselves thus warning him would only serve to make him play the game more tactfully and cautiously rather than leaving it altogether. The following afternoon Inder had called Sandiip up accusing him of tampering with his documents Sandiip had listened to his earful coolly before snubbing him off rudely telling him that he had no proof on him to justify his accusations. Inder had further been maddened when Sandiip told him that he planned to repeat the same trick to bag another project but this time Inder had had enough he slammed the phone down in disgust making up his mind to pay this Sandiip a visit that night.
Milind had yet again been rejected and sat on the charpoi outside the chawl silently staring at the star studded night sky. He had lost count on the number of interviews he had given till date, he felt like a certified loser destined to face defeat each time he even thought of following the right path. Soon he was surrounded by friends who resided in the same chawl with him. "Kiya hua aaj bhi nahin mili naukri?" Sunil had inquired gauging his depression from his facial expression. "Abey saala meri kismat main hee nahin hai achi naukri" he had answered crudely smacking his fist on the wooden post of the charpoi in frustration. Milind had indeed been a bright and intelligent student acquiring top scores throughout his academic career. He alone knew how he had funded his higher education by working evening jobs which sometimes carried on in the wee hours of the night. But he had not lost hope having complete faith in himself determined that once he earned his degree he would be able to get a job that would best exploit his talents. Little had he known that he was soon to consider this a farce, a dream shattered in a million pieces. "Dekh Milind roz roz tension leney sey acha hai apun apna koi dhanda ker lein" Sunil had advised him sharing his charpoi. "Kiya matlab?" Milind had asked not understanding him a bit. "Mera eik dost hai Kabir ker key woh eik seth key paas kaam kerta hai apun usko apni naukri key vaastey bola hai tuu bhi aa jaa aaj raat apun key saath eik ki bajaye do naukri ka baat ker leyga. Kiya bolta hai?" Milind pondered on the offer. "Per naukri kiya hogi?" Ali had asked "Apun to khud ki dukaan ki baat kerney jaa raha hai woh seth apunko paisa udhaar deyga, apun bhi chota mota business chalu ker leyga, na kisi ki sunni pareygi na koi mach mach, saala apna kamaya apna khaya. Aur thora thora ker key uss seth ko paisa waapis ker deyga" he had explained his plans to them. The offer was alluring both Ali and Milind were having a tough time these days their education appeared useless the moment they entered any institution. No one required hard working and honest men it was all a game, interviews would be held but the candidate to be selected would be decided upon even before the interview took place itself. To start a business they would need initial finance to invest right now they had nothing to get deposited as security against a loan in the bank and the interest rate would be high too. If they took money from this businessman they may be able to work out something that would be feasible for both parties. After debating over the issue for an hour Sunil had convinced Milind to accompany him that night to Sandiip's office.
Even though Milind was grateful to Sandiip for fixing an appointment with him at such a short notice the fact was he wasn't impressed with him at all. Sandiip had a mean look to him one that indicated he was merciless in his dealings. He was a rather short, bald and bloated fellow his thick wrists and neck were adorned with a dozen gold chains and bracelets and he smoked a cigar carelessly. His guard had ushered Milind and Sunil in his overstuffed office and now they both sat facing him. It was evident from his manner that Sandiip did not think much of Sunil but his eyes had glinted when he saw Milind. This man might be useful to him his arrogance, his confidence and his dare devil attitude made him stand out to Sandiip who had an evil scheme in mind and needed someone to execute the task with precision. Men like Sandiip were ready to cross all boundaries in their quest for wealth, their greed drove them and was the primary force behind all their actions. Signalling Milind to follow him Sandiip had led him to the lawn outside the building he could use fresh air after the stale cigar smog in the office. Milind had no choice but to follow him squeezing Sunil's shoulder reassuringly he had left behind Sandiip. "Milind naam haina tumhara" Sandiip had confirmed waddling through the musty corridors to the unkempt lawn "Haan" Milind had assented walking by his side stepping out in the cool night. "Tum jaisey log chotey motey dhandey kertey achey nahin lagtey Milind, main tumhain unchaion ko chootey dekhna chahta huun" he had smiled slyly at Milind who had stared at him in confusion. Why was Sandiip being so generous to him when he clearly hadn't even cast a second glance at Sunil. "Aap bas mujhey koi dukaan kholney jitney paisey dey dijiye main jald hi waapis lauta duunga" Milind had put his point forward. "Arey dukaan kiya makaan bhi duunga tumko lekin uskey liye tumhain mera eik kaam kerna pareyga" Sandiip had grinned evilly standing by a crop of trees. "Kaisa kaam" Milind had inquired suspiciously what single task could land him both a shop and a home he was curious to know.
"Inder Shah ka naam suna hai?" Sandiip had asked him and Milind's forehead had creased, the name did ring a bell somewhere oh yes he had been to the Shah's office for an interview recently, he hadn't met Inder upfront but had caught a glimpse of him busy with his lawyer. Secretly Milind had been deeply inspired by Inder and had wished at that moment to follow his footsteps to success and glory. "Haan suna hai" Milind had affirmed knowledge on Inder "Bas uska game baja daalna hai" Sandiip had smirked drawing a deep puff of the tobacco running his fingers on his bald head. "Matlab?" Milind had watched him confused "Matlab usko uper puhunchaney ka hai. Buhut dimagh ki dahi kerta hai aur apna number one competitor hai. Main chahta to kisi professional ko paisey dey ker kab ka usko khallas kerwa chuka hota per tuu apna bacha hai, tereyko paison ki zarurat hai or mereyko aisey aadmi ki jiska koi criminal record nahin ho. Kya samjha..... usko uraaney key vaastey tereyko do paiti deyga main boley to do lakh aadha abhi aadha kaam key baad." Milind had felt as if someone had snatched the ground from under his feet his blood boiled as he stood transfixed, astounded at Sandiip's vicious and criminal thoughts and aspirations. So that was his plan to get Inder Shah murdered and to use him to carry out his dirty tasks he felt ashamed of having even consented to meet this fat crook impersonating as a generous benefactor to lost souls like him. He wondered how many people had fallen prey to his fatal schemes earlier but he for one was not going to sell his soul to the devil at any damn cost, a human life valued far more than any monetary asset in his view. Stepping out of his car Inder had walked briskly to Sandiip's office with Amit in tow, Inder had wanted to go alone but Amit had pressed upon the fact that they were dealing with a dangerous goon and not any ordinary man. He certainly was not letting Inder go pursue and challenge Sandiip on his own, he knew his boss was a level headed man but he did not trust Sandiip for even a minute. They were about to step on the gravel path leading to the dreary corridors when they heard voices emanating from the lawns atleast one of them certainly matched Sandiip's. Putting his finger to his lips Inder had gestured Amit to be silent and tiptoed to the lawn. A thick clump of trees provided them the required cover and they hid behind the foliage in an attempt to overhear his plans from their vantage point they could see Sandiip in deep conversation with a young, handsome rather scruffy looking man. Sandiip stood smoking his cigar while the man stared at him blankly straining their ears both Inder and Amit were able to track the conversation as a plan to get him done away with. Amit was panic stricken and had it not been for Inder firmly holding him by his arm he'd have dashed out in the open yelling curses at both the men.
Before Sandiip had a chance to explain the added benefits of his lucrative offer to Milind he felt a strong hand close in on his throat. "Tuu ney kiya samjha saaley Milind Mishra koi bharey ka tattu hai jo terey eik ishaarey per kisi kii jaan leyleyga." Sandiip was caught completely offguard by Milind's sudden attack he croaked in pain the cigar dropped from his hands as he fruitlessly tried to free himself of Milind's iron fingers clasped firmly around his neck. "Choro mujhey" he had managed gasping for air as Milind tightened his grip on his larynx. "Pata chala kaisey nikalti hai jaan .......... kaisey band hoti hai saans, jab khud ka tetwa dabta hai tab pata chalta hai jaan ki asli qeemat kiya hoti hai, deyga ab do peiti mujhey?" Milind had hollered at him his temper flaring. Sandiip had started flailing his arms in the air in a desperate attempt to run away his eyes had started bulging now and for a moment Inder had been tempted to blow his cover and stop Milind from strangling the man to death. Finally when Milind realized he had terrorized him enough he let go of his throat releasing Sandiip he left him sprawling on the green sputtering for air. "Arey Milind bhooka mar jayega lekin yeh ghatia kaam kabhi nahin kerey ga. Mujhey laga tha keh tuu eik acha insaan hai meri madad kerna chahta lekin tujh jaisa kamina mainey aaj tak nahin dekha" Milind had lashed out wretchedly. Sandiip lay panting on the ground he was in no position to back answer Milind lest he instigated him further he could see that this young man was not one to be messed around with. "Ab tuu dekhna Sikcand keh main teri madad key bina kin unchaiyon ko choota hoon. Sachai key raastey per chal ker tujh sey zyaada naam, maqam aur daulat nahin haasil kii to mera naam Milind Mishra nahin" saying that he had turned to leave but had retreated his steps a few seconds later.
"Eik baat kaan khol ker sun ley Sandiip agar uss Inder Shah ko eik kharonch bhi ayi to agli baar yeh haath tab tak teri gardan per raheyga jab tak teri saans band nahi hogi, apni khairiyat chahta hai to uss sey duur rehna. Tuu insaan hai bhagwan nahin or bhagwan banney ki koshish bhi mat kerna warna main tera game baja daalunga" raising his index finger he had warned Sandiip before vanishing in the dark corridor behind him. Muttering curses to him Sandiip had finally managed to stand on his feet dragging himself to his office. The scene had left Inder speechless here was a man who had not known him personally but was ready to endanger his own life for his security. Something about Milind had struck Inder at that moment and he was forced to assess Milind anew. His shock on Sandiip's offer had not escaped Inder the way he had drawn in a huge lungful of air and the way his eyes had clouded with fury were marked by Inder immediately. His displeasure and finally his wrath sealed his image in Inder's heart that of a virtuous young man caught in an intricate web of greed for power .An image of Milind threatening Sandiip flashed in his mind as he walked silently back to his parked car, there was raw passion a fire in that young man which if harnessed could be utilized for the young man's own benefit. He was young and naiive unaware of the filth and grime that often accompanied one on the way to success and Inder just could not let him fall weak in his resolve atleast not after what he had witnessed tonight. Amit too had been appalled by the young man's take on Sandiip's offer. He had thought Milind to be some street smart thug willing to obey Sandiip's orders but his conversation had cleared all misunderstandings for Amit. As they drove towards their office Inder had mused thoughtfully before asking Amit to get him all information regarding Milind Mishra his life, his past, present and his dreams they were all his responsibility now. If Milind wanted to make it big the right way, show Sandiip that he was above his schemes and complete the challenge he had issued to him Inder would make sure he did.

Part 40
Both Premlata and Milind sat in stunned silence in the chawl house, the events Amit had narrated had kindled lost memories in their minds. Milind had not known that Inder had been witness to his conversation with Sandiip that night neither had Inder ever mentioned it to him. The fact that Inder felt indebted to Milind was a major shock to him, he had done what had been right what his heart had told him to do never had he realized that it would lead to such a chain of events. Mr Verma had further informed him how Inder had paved the way to Milind's success it was Inder who had talked one of his friends into employing Milind. It was Inder who had made it easier for Milind to get his first loan sanctioned to start his first company with and then the ball had rolled itself. Inder had complete faith in Milind's acumen and intelligence he knew once provided the platform Milind could raise to heights himself hence he had taken it upon himself to provide him with one. Premlata sat numb to the core her daughter couldn't have found a better match for herself Milind had proved his worth back then to Inder and now after learning the entire truth to her. She understood now why Inder had vested so much of faith, time and money into Milind's well being because deep down he had known Milind for the man he was. Her eyes had lifted to Inder's walled portrait if only he had been here to see the man he had held in such high esteem was indeed his son in law. Milind had walked up to Inder's photograph and touched it with respect till now he thought his father was the only one who understood him more than himself but he was wrong. Inder had always known him and done what was best for him he had been his spiritual mentor all along like a second father. Closing his eyes he had taken a few minutes to compose himself before turning around to face Premlata and Mr Verma. "Mr Verma aap ka ehsaan shayad main zindagi bhar nahin bhul sakunga" he had stated with gratitude. "Bas eik ehsaan aap mujh per kijiyega Mr Mishra, meri maut key baad meri family ka khayal rakhiyega. Buhut kuch kerna chahta huun main apni ikloti beti key liye lekin mere paas waqt nahin" saying so he had poured out his miseries to Milind who had promised to take care of 10 year old Sia as his own child. Mr Verma had left then his soul free from all burdens atlast he could die in peace. After his departure Milind had spent some time with Daadi her frail and pale form lying helplessly, had her son been alive this would not have been her fate. Her condition tugged at his heart as he sat beside her gently caressing her feverish forehead. His touch had sparked new life in her "Inder" she had whispered her eyes closed as she smiled feebly. "Tum aa gaye Inder...... mujhey malum tha tum zarur aaogey ......... kitna yaad kiya mainey tumko or tum ab aaye ho...... Maa kii yaad nahin aati?" Premlata had dimmed the lights as Daadi had opened her eyes slowly clasping Milind's hand in her own she had kissed it lovingly for her Inder was very much there in that room.
Premlata had left the room unable to stay there any longer it had been too painful for her to see her mother in law pine for her dead son. Milind had smoothed Daadi's hair with benevolence kissing her burning forehead he had squeezed her hand reassauringly. Daadi had drifted off to sleep soon but the small smile that played on her lips while she slept was enough for Milind, he was now enlightened on why fate had led him to Prachi. It was destined to be this way he was meant to act as saviour to Inder Shah's family and he vowed he would do everything in his power to restore to them what was rightfully theirs. Leaving her sleeping peacefully he had informed Premlata about Daadi's condition, Premlata was extremely dishearted to know about cancer being her mother in law's cause of ill health. Milind had promised that he would leave no stone unturned to get her treated from the very best doctors but for that they had to get her admitted to the hospital the next day. Premlata was left with no choice she could not deny Milind's help as he was now part of their family and she herself was in no condition to lose her mother in law losing Inder had been a big enough blow for her. Consenting to Milind's wishes she had assented to packing Daadi's belongings and getting her shifted to the hospital the next day. She hoped the operation would be a success and her mother in law would indeed be hale and hearty soon encouraging her and helping her face life with a smile.
Milind had also asked Premlata to pack her things as she would indeed be living with him in Mishra house but that Premlata was not willing to do at all. She could not face Prachi moreso she needed to spend some time alone but Milind would hear none of it he had stressed on the fact that he did not want her to stay on her own in that house. The truth was Milind could not bear to see Premlata living such a deplorable life when he himself was indebted to Inder for not only his freedom but also his success and glory. Premlata had tried to explain her reasons but he simply refused to listen to anything further. "Maa aapko meri qasam chaliye nahin to mujhey lageyga main ney apney betey honey ka haq ada nahin kiya" and that had proven the last nail in the coffin. Overcome with exhaustion and sorrow Premlata had broken down weeping silently why did all of this have to happen to her. She could not understand why fate had been so cruel to her Inder had been taken away, Alaap had added to the misery by rendering them penniless and now Daadi was ill the more she tried to make head or tail of her situation the more she lost track of life altogether. She wondered what lay in store for her, Milind had been deeply hurt to see her that way comprehending her situation perfectly he knew how it felt when fate closed all doors of absolution it was the worst anyone could ever be subjected to. Seating her on the sofa he had fetched water for her from the kitchen and helped her drink it "Maa kyun pareshaan hain aap itni aapka beta hai na" he had consoled her sitting on the floor infront of her gently squeezing her hand in his own. Wiping away her tears Premlata had smiled at him "Tum ho isi liye to ab mujhey Prachi kii chinta nahin". She had patted his cheek fondly trying to act brave she did not want Milind to leave with a heavy heart. "To bas phir Prachi key saath uskey parivaar ki bhi zimmeddari meri hai or aap yeh kyun bhuul jaati hain keh damad sey pehley main aapka beta huun" he had pouted childishly. "Acha baba aagey sey nahin bhulungi ab uthney do mujhey takeh tumhain thepley dey sakun" she had laughed at him "Prachi ko buhut pasand hain uskey liye ley jaana." "Yeh hai aapka pyaar Maa sirf aapki beti yaad rahi aapko" and this time he was seriously irritated folding his arms across his chest he turned away from Premlata. "Chalo ab badmaashi nahin kero tumharey liye halwa banaya hai mainey kha ker jaana" Premlata had cajoled him ruffling his curls and he had immediately flashed her a simpering smile. "Yeh hui na baat" he had laughed happily as Premlata left for the kitchen. Sitting in the lounge pondering on the day's events his eyes had flitted to Inder's garlanded photograph "Aapkey saarey qarz uttarunga yeh vaada hai mera" he had vowed silently to Inder's smiling form.
He had sunk in the couch beside Baba in the hall when Preeti who had been in Prachi's arms had wriggled to be free. Once Prachi had put her down she had run upto him "Papa paash.... Papa paash" she had extended her little arms to him and he had pulled her on his lap. She was nearly a year and a half old now and having newly found her feet ran like the wind making it difficult to get hold of her. "Papa cheej" she had demanded searching his pockets for the customary chocolate he always brought home for her. "Pehley kissi" he had reminded her gesturing towards his cheek and she had stood up on his lap entwining her arms around his neck she hugged him passionately before planting a wet kiss on his cheek. "Bash Papa?" she had inquired innocently curling her lips in a grin when he had hugged her closer nuzzling his face in her neck kissing her repeatedly while his fingers tickled her small belly. "Papa nayi nayi nayi!!!!!" she screeched with laughter doubling over in his arms and he had let go laughing, watching her turn pink in the face gasping for breath. Prachi had watched on smiling the father daughter duo certainly were a handful both outdid each other at naughtiness. Reaching in his coat pocket he had brought out the chocolate bar and handed it to her "Tanku Papa" she had kissed him on his other cheek before sliding down his lap and running up to Prachi. "Mumma" she held out the chocolate to her and Prachi had opened the wrapper folding it down the sides before handing it back to her. "Preeti kapron per nahin girana" she had instructed the little child as she dashed off in the lawn outside laughing in mirth. "Tara zara dekho to issey" Prachi had requested her who seemed to be engrossed in checking out new hair styles and cuts featured in a magazine, frowning Naintara had followed Preeti outside.
"Kiya hua thak gaya hai kiya?" Bua had asked Milind who had dropped his head back rubbing his forehead gently "Hmm" he had murmured. "Bahu zara dekho to sar main dard hai isskey teil garam ker key laga do issey araam aa jayega". Milind's head had jerked up "Bua main theek huun" he had sit up straight immediately. "Woh to shakal sey dikh raha hai kitney theek ho" Bua had remarked sarcastically cursing himself for his folly Milind had gathered his stuff and ascended the stairs to his bedroom. "Bahu saath main adrak ki chai bhi leti jaana" Bua had ordered Prachi again who by then had finished making a cup of tea and had heated the oil to body temperature. Taking care not to spill anything she had carried them to the room to find Milind sprawled on the huge bed haphazardly. He indeed looked distraught as he had not cared to take off his shoes or coat. Placing the items on the table Prachi had walked silently upto him she had then sat down on the bed beside him and proceeded to take off his shoes rolling off his socks too. Milind had dozed off tired and exhausted when he felt someone touch him gently he had opened his eyes to find Prachi taking off his socks. Pulling his feet back in haste he had stopped her "Rehney dey Prachi main ker luunga" but she simply smiled helping him take off his coat next handing him the cup of tea she resumed her seat beside him. Milind had leaned against the headboard of the bed closing his eyes breathing deeply the revelation that Inder had been the one behind his success had caused deep wounds to his ineffable pride. Pride in the belief that he had alone made the journey from a chawl resident to a powerful and influential business tycoon. Till now he had considered all his wealth a fruit of his single handed labour little had he realized that someone else had sowed the seeds to the fruit he had reaped. Prachi had touched his arm with concern "Kiya hua Milind aap itney pareshaan kyun hain?" she had questioned him in anguish. He had opened his eyes studying her face silently but refrained from answering her query picking up the cup he drank the scalding liquid in two gulps. "Milind sanbhal ker garam hai!" Prachi had tried warning him but it was too late he had already finished it. "Milind kiya ho gaya hai aapko itni garam chai koi peeta hai ab mun jal gaya hoga aapka!" she had gasped aghast at his action touching his face lightly distress writ largely on her face. "Yahaan to sab kuch jal gaya Prachi" he had murmured sadly and Prachi's eyes had focused on his dark and defeated ones. "Milind kiya hua kuch bataiye to aap kyun itney udaas hain?" she had inquired panic stricken had something happened why was he so upset? When he still didn't respond Prachi had held his hand in her own "Milind bataiye na kiya hua... kuch to boliye please" Milind could see his silence was killing her. He had lifted his eyes to meet her questioning gaze "Kaisa lagta hai Prachi jab insaan ko pata chaley keh jis cheez key safal honey ka zimmedar woh sirf apney aap ko samajhta raha woh safalta to asal main uski hai hii nahin...... kissi aur kii dein hai." Prachi had tried to make sense of his quizzical statement " Aapka matlab hai aapney kisi kaam key liye mehnat kii or ab jab woh kamyaab ho gaya to aapko lagta hai uska credit kisi aur ko jaata hai?" she had asked softly. "Haan yunhi samajh ley" he had sighed deeply crushed, letting her squeeze his palm gently. "Aapko aisa kyun lagta hai keh credit sirf ussey jaata hai ?" she had inquired watching him with thoughtful eyes. "Kyunki uska hissa bhi hai iss kaamyaabi main, aur main samajhta raha keh mainey akeley hii woh kaam kiya kitna fakhar tha mujhey apney aap per. Apni qabliyat per kitna yaqeen tha mujhey lekin ab"...... he had paused dropping his head in his hands he ran his fingers through his curls in exasperation.
Why could he not be responsible for atleast one good thing in his life. Not being able to see him that depressed Prachi had knelt before him on the floor, cradling his face in her palms she had held it up so that his eyes met hers. "Aap aisa kyun sochtey hain keh har insaan har kaam akeley hii kerta hai. Bhagwaan bhi jab insaan ki kismat likhta hai to usey bananey ya bigarney ka haq insaan ko hii deta hai. Agar bhagwan kismat ko baant sakta hai, duniya main aayi har cheez ko baant sakta hai to phir aap iss baat sey pareshaan kyun hotey hain keh aapki safalta main kisi ka haath hai. Uski madad sey aapki mehnat kam to nahin ho jayegi. Aapki qabiliyat, aapka junoon aapka har pal jo aap ney us kaam main lagaya wahiin qaim hain or in sab key baghair uss insaan ki madad beykaar hii rehti." Milind had stared at her in surprise seeing her in a different light altogether watching her soft lips move pouring sweet notes to him, her voice felt like music to his ears. All that she said made perfect sense Inder had just been a means to provide him a chance all that had happened afterwards was due to his sheer hard work, his continous vigour, toil and acumen. "Ab dekhiye yeh jo garam chai aap ney pii lii mainey banai thi na aapkey liye main paani main patti, cheeni or doodh nahin milati to chai apney aap to nahin ban jaati na. Issi tarah aapki mehnat or junoon bhi iss safalta ka hissa hain phir chahey aur kitney hii logon ney aapka saath kyun na diya ho lekin kaavish to aapki hii thi na, idea to aapka tha baaqi sabney to sirf madad ki aapney to apney sapney ko haqeeqat banaya" she had smiled at him. Taking her hands in his he had kissed her open palms painstakingly her kind words had breathed a new life in him she had shown him a different aspect of this whole scenario. "Thanks" he had whispered making her sit beside him on the bed "Anytime" she had laughed happy to see him at peace and light hearted again that was all that she desired his happiness. Content and satisfied Prachi had rested her head against his shoulder smiling to herself and Milind had looked at her passionately feeling her warm and soft against him life certainly had changed for the better.

Part 41
Milind had informed Prachi about his visit to her mother's place handing her the theplas Premlata had lovingly made and sent for her. Prachi had been elated as she took the tiffin containing them from him. "Maa ney bhejjey hain? ......Merey liye?" she had questioned him in disbelief "Haan terey liye" he had assured her smiling. "Matlab unhon ney mujhey maaf ker diya?" she had asked him again with shining eyes still not able to consider it as true. "Shayad" Milind had told her honestly it was unfair enough that he withheld crucial information from her regarding her grandmother's illness and thought it best to be upfront on this issue atleast. Nonetheless Prachi's happiness knew no bounds she had thanked him continually till he had to place his palm on her lips "Bas Prachi kitna thank you kereygi mereyko" he had laughed at her childishness. She had held his hand in her own gratefully "Aap nahin jaantey Milind aapney kitni bari khushi dii hai aaj mujhey" she had replied in a moist tone. As they sat discussing the preparations for Premlata's arrival the next day Naintara had walked in huffing and puffing like a locomotive. "Preeti kahaan hai Tara?" Prachi had inquired finding her arms empty "Bhabhi main bataye dey rahi huun mujh sey nahin bhaga jaata uss key piichey, main bas yeh puchney aayi thii keh Milind bhaiyya ke sar ka dard kaisa hai ab? Bua keh rahi hain agar teil sey aaraam nahin aaya to woh jaribooti waala doodh bana dein?" That was the last straw for Milind he felt he had no command over his life anymore smacking his palm to his head he had cursed himself for speaking about his woes in public. Never ever was he going to do that again springing up from the bed in haste he had assured Naintara that once Prachi applied the oil it would do wonders for him and there was simply no need for any milk with medicinal herbs.
Watching Naintara leave finally though still unconvinced Milind had breathed a sigh of relief causing Prachi to laugh aloud at his pitiable condition. "Milind ab aap teil lagwa hii lijiye is sey pehley keh Bua khud uper aa jayein" she had advised him trying her best to keep a straight face. Milind had immediately consented lying on the bed Prachi had then seated herself beside him and proceeded to apply oil to his temples massaging them tenderly with her soft fingers stealing glances at his handsome face as he lay with closed eyes. He lay serenely savouring her touch which seemed to hold magical healing powers as not only was Milind's headache done away with but soon he had drifted into deep slumber. Prachi had assumed him to be resting but when he did not move for quite some time and didn't respond when she called out to him she realized he had gone to sleep, covering him with the blanket she left him to check on Preeti. Downstairs the rest of the family had dined but Prachi refrained from eating anything she felt guilty of forcing Milind to get his forehead massaged and now he had slept without having any dinner. Feeding Preeti she had given her a dose of the medicine which had helped in soothing her and soon she too lay asleep cradled in Prachi's arms as she patted the child gently.Once back in her room Prachi had placed Preeti by her father on the bed they looked so peaceful in deep slumber pulling the blanket over her she had kissed them both goodnight and had lain on the sofa tired to the bone.
Milind had wandered far away from human dwelling he did not know why he was here in the first place but he knew he had to go on till he reached his destination, the odd part though was he hardly had a clue about where he was headed or what would be his final stop. He walked barefoot and could feel the undergrowth scrape against his soles. The ground was uneven littered with thorns and jagged stones which pricked him sharply as he trudged forward. He seemed to walk in a woodland with thick trees surrounding him blotting out any rays of sunlight the place was silent almost eerie. He could hear the dead leaves scrunch under his feet as he moved on it seemed as if he had been walking since long but still there was no sign of any outlet from the dreary and dark captivity. The place had started giving him creeps long tendrils and creepers hung from the overhead branches separating parts of the clearing he felt suffocated and trapped. He pushed them back weaving his way through the undergrowth which had started to grow more dense as he proceeded the darkness spread far and wide and the more he strained to see the more things seemed to vanish behind thick curtains of foliage. He was beginning to lose hope now no matter how hard he tried to find a way out he found himself lost and at his wits end. His heart had started beating wildly this seemed like a never ending maze he started running trying to leave it all behind but it was no use no matter how hard or fast he ran he always ended up at the same clearing. Tired and depressed he had fallen to his knees, his feet bled profusely his white kurta was a mess smeared with dirt he cast a helpless look around him. There was simply no route to escape it seemed the gloom was overpowering him numbing his senses closing his eyes he sighed deeply..... was this the end for him? Was he destined to die all alone in this sad and desolate place? Thoughts ran wild in his mind his Baba, his daughter they were waiting for him, how was he going to get back to them? Would he ever see them again be free of this imprisonment? Why was he here? What had he done to deserve this? Just when he had thought all hope was lost he heard a voice behind him. "Abhi sey himmat haar gaye?" someone had questioned him. Getting up on his feet he stood to face the owner of the voice and it shocked him to see that it was Inder Shah clad in white a soft glow seem to emit off him making him look like some divine being. "Abhi to buhut duur jaana hai tumney, buhut kaam adhurey hain Milind Mishra... or unhain sirf tum pura karogey." Milind stared at him in bewilderment, where had he come from? A few minutes ago he had been there all alone then how did Inder manage to find him? "Aap yahaan kaisey aaye? yahaan to koi raasta nahin dikh raha" he had inquired still amazed at Inder's navigational skills but Inder had simply smiled holding his hand in his he led him towards a gap in the enclosure. Pushing aside a curtain of ivies he had stepped on the other side with Milind in tow, "Arey yeh to yahin tha phir mujhey kyun nahin nazar aaya?" Milind had voiced his astonishment the path had been there all along why had he not found it earlier.
The scenery had completely changed they now stood at a shoreline the sun shone brightly overhead and all that Milind could see was miles and miles of the deepest and bluest ocean he had ever set eyes on contrasting the pure white sand that covered the beach. The waves shimmered in the sunshine as crusts of diamonds embedded against a wall of sapphires their lustre had caused him to blink his eyes being temporarily blinded. Inder had walked with him in the sea and as the crystalline water washed his feet his wounds had healed magically. His pain having vanished he smiled at Inder who led him further down the beach. Why were they here? Where were they headed? Thoughts assailed him but he kept silent following Inder who still clasped his hand firmly in his own and Milind had let him fearing if he let go he might be transported back in the dark forest. Consequently they arrived at a palm grove rich with emerald foliage, flowers of a million hues bloomed everywhere in that glade Inder had stepped on the plush green Milind too had followed. He studied the place in wonder it was enchanting, breath taking butterflies flitted from flower to flower as the breeze softly carressed his cheek. Was this heaven, maybe he had died and was sent to heaven with Inder as they walked on further they saw a young fair maiden sitting near a rock pool she sat weaving wreaths from daisies chaining them into garlands. As she worked hapily her lips hummed a soft tune. Milind had never seen anyone more captivating than her she was extremely beautiful but why did she look so familiar? Had he seen her somewhere? Consequently the maiden screamed in agony Milind stood dumbstruck as before his very eyes the maiden's arms were slit with invisible objects bearing large cuts the gashes being deep the wounds bled profusely. The girl sobbed silently she stretched her hands out for Milind and Inder to see watching them helplessly. "Yeh! " Milind gasped in horror, in a matter of minutes the maiden's white silken gown was stained with crimson her head bent low she cried pitifully.
Inder had released Milind's hand and then as if enlightened anew Milind had rushed to her side gently lifting her face from her knees he had wiped away her tears lovingly. "Buhut dard hai?" he had questioned her with concern in answer the girl had simply nodded her head. Picking her up in his arms Milind had walked out of the glade stepping on the soft white grains he felt her sob against him her head resting on his chest. Sauntering towards the wide glittering ocean Milind had waded in the clear azure water his clothes were wet but that did not stop him from walking deeper and further cradling the young woman in his arms. All that mattered was her pain and all he wished then was for it to cease immediately. Shoals of brilliantly coloured tropical fish darted in and out of his feet as he trudged through the crystal clear water when it had reached waist deep Milind had stopped, gently lowering the girl he made her stand with him in it. Cupping his hands he filled them with the sea water pouring it over her head watching it trickle down her face in small streams. He tenderly bathed her hands her face and her head till she stood quite drenched to the core, taking her hands in his Milind looked on as the wounds healed magically and soon there was not a single trace left of them. The girl had stared at him her soft pink lips revealing her beautiful smile "Thank you Milind" she had whispered taking his hands in hers she had pressed her wet lips against his burnished skin, her kiss felt enchanting fiery against the cold lapping water. Taking his hand in hers she had turned to face the shore where Inder awaited them. "Chalein" she had inquired and he had returned her smile treading the white sand till they emerged on the wet beach hand in hand. As they approached Inder Milind had been quick to withdraw his hand from hers lest Inder would disapprove of it, the girl had hugged Inder as he placed a soft kiss on her forehead. "Papa dekhiye merey saarey daag dhul gaye" she had shown him her bare arms in elation and Milind watched Inder's face light up as he saw his daughter happy. "Mujhey malum tha eik tum hi ho jo iskey saarey dard mita sakta hai " Inder had addressed a mute Milind witness to the father daughter bonding. "Aao Prachi" Inder had beckoned her taking her hand in his he had called Milind to him "Yahaan aao Milind" and had placed his daughter's milky white hand in Milind's dark one. Prachi had closed her fingers around Milind's hand squeezing it reassuraingly as he stood stupefied. "Ab yeh tumhari amanat hai waqt aaney per issey ley jaana.... apney saath... apney paas... apna banaker. Vaada kero saari khushian dogey issey". Inder had asked Milind to promise and Milind had heard himself say "Vaada kerta huun apsey apni jaan sey barh ker khayal rakhunga iska, hamesha khush rakhunga... apney paas..... apney saath."
He had risen with a start panting deeply trying to make sense of his surroundings he wiped his brow of sweatbeads looking around him in astonishment. He was in his bedroom Preeti lay sleeping near him her curled lashes fringing her closed eyes, bending down he had kissed her forehead with love. Was all that he seen a dream? What did it mean? Why did Inder entrust him with Prachi did he want him to take care of her? He felt as if his mind was going to explode with questions when Inder's words resounded in his ears."Ab yeh tumhari amanat hai waqt aaney per issey ley jaana.... apney saath... apney paas... apna banaker. Vaada kero saari khushian dogey issey". What did that mean was Inder happy that Prachi resided with him at his residence? Maybe that was the reason he had given her hand in his maybe it meant that the fake life they were living had received Inder's consent too. Throwing back the covers he stood up to find himself still in his office attire he felt hungry and hot. Pulling out his clothes from the wardrobe he headed to the washroom and fifteen minutes later after a cold shower he felt much better.
Prachi had heard water running continuously first she had thought she must be dreaming but then realization dawned on her. Opening her eyes groggily she switched on the lamp to find Milind's space empty on the bed. He probably had woken up he must be hungry she had thought pushing back her blanket she smoothed her hair and went down to the kitchen, heating the food she splashed her face with water to drive the sleep away. Placing it in a tray she quietly ascended the stairs pushing the door open she found him busy towelling his hair. As she entered he took the tray from her "Yeh sab kerney ki kiya zarurat thi?" he had asked her. "Kyun aapko bhuk nahin lagi thi?" she had counterquestioned and he had smiled "Haan lagi to thi" he had led her to the balcony. "Ander baatein kareingey to woh choti uth jayegi phir soyegi hii nahin" he had explained. As they sat dining in the balcony Milind had looked at Prachi thoughfully "Prachi tujhey kabhi koi gehri chot lagi thi kiya? Aisi jis main tujhey buhut takleef hui ho?" and Prachi had watched him intently before averting her eyes from him her gaze resting on the floor. Involuntarily though she had wrapped her arms around herself "Nahin!" and in that one moment Milind had known she was lying to him.
