Republic Day note by SRK

Ladies and gentlemen….boys and girls… thank you for stopping by kbclive.com.

Wow... what a week it has been! I've had my first lady at the Hot Seat as well as the highest earner till date. So although there were some heart breaking moments there but we've also most definitely had some heart warming ones too! If you ask me the Hot Seat is most definitely losing some of its heat – I'd say its warm now and getting quite comfortable.

Last time, I was writing to you Mohit was beginning to get into his game. Being a businessman, Mohit played so calmly and intelligently that it was no surprise that he became my highest winning contestant of this season when he walked away with Rs. 25 lakh. I did enjoy playing with him and his family. For a while, I felt like I was a part of his family in Haryana. One of the best parts of playing with him was seeing his son's picture. I love knowing about other children because as a parent I understand what an important part they form in a parent's life. I mean everything that we do or say is then connected to them. The pride and joy you see in a parent's eye when they discuss their children can hardly ever be matched.

And finally our Republic Day celebration last night. But before we go into that, tell me, will you wave our flag today? Do spend a few minutes thinking about our country and sing our national anthem. I hope you do... Because I surely will!

Now back to the Republic Day contestants – Vinayak Karan and Vasu Jaitly. Vinayak had a lot of hopes and I would have been loved it if he could have won more than he did... but c'est la vie. We all have our ups and downs. And as far as Vasu is concerned, I do hope she wins the Rs. 2 crore – it's the matter of my marriage yaar!

After having accepted Vasu's proposal and exchanging our romantic dialogues it almost felt like we were playing for love and happiness on the sets of KBC. But then in a way we are... I do hope that meeting me and more importantly winning this money does give my contestants and their family members one more reason in their lives to be happy.

And on that note I will sign off today but only if you promise me that I will see you again next week and in the meantime you can connect with me right here on kbclive.com.

See you Monday night... I will be waiting for you... Lot's of love...

Will KBC & Koffee follow Karan & Samir Nair into NDTV?

By Subhash K. Jha, January 25, 2007 - 07:19 IST

A strong rumour doing the rounds is that Star's two new posh shows Kaun Banega Crorepati and Koffee with Karan will follow Karan Johar and Samir Nair into NDTV's soon-to-be-launched entertainment channel.

"How can that be? My relationship with Star during the first season of Koffee has been fantastic. At the same time my association with NDTV is my future on television. Let's see how it goes. I don't want to jump the gun and make plans for the future. Koffee with Karan is a Star brand-show," says Karan currently in Dubai promoting Koffee.

As for Sameer Nair's move into NDTV. "Pranoy Roy who's the man behind NDTV is a great visionary. I'm proud to be part of NDTV. As for Samir, he's a tremendously intelligent man. He has proven himself time and again in the world of television. And I'm sure he'll be a winner in whatever he does."

Fatigued, he brightens as he watches his closest friend Shah Rukh on the first episode of the new KBC. "I haven't been on the set to watch him shoot. But I did his clothes on KBC. I just hope my Koffee matches up to the high standards set by shah Rukh. We've put in our best. This time around I'm far more relaxed with the format. I'm hoping I'm less worried with my guests. I'm no longer a debutant."

Karan sees 2007 as one of his busiest years. "Not just busy but also a very different year. Because television gets priority."

Does he like his new role as a TV tycoon? "Television is the future.

Anyone in the visual media is advised to take the plunge. I'm happy to have my talk show on one channel and the privilege of making software for another channel. I was lucky to get the opportunity to get into TV ahead of my colleagues. And that NDTV, a channel I really respect, considered me good enough for their entertainment channel is really flattering for me. Because at the end of the day, I'm not a TV person. I'm a filmmaker."

He singles out Shah Rukh as the pioneer on television. "Even before he became a superstar in the movies he was a well-known name on television. So he's come a full circle. Shah Rukh is an entertainer and a warm, emotional human being. That combination will succeed tremendously in KBC. I've seen how he interacts with all his loyal fans. Shah Rukh is very confident on television. As for me I want to entertain on both television and in cinema. I'm full of ideas."

Would he make feature films for television? "Whatever they want me to do on NDTV I'll do for them. But tele-films? Nooooo! I don't think so. The two mediums are totally exclusive. Television is for talk shows, game shows etc. I'll make feature films only for the big screen. I'll make software for NDTV. With Shah Rukh doing television that sense of television being cinema's poor cousin is gone. If you ask me, my brand value has tripled after my talk show on television. More people want to see my films because they see me on television. It's a communication medium of instant gratification. I love it. But cinema is my first love. I've enough time to take care of both mediums. As a filmmaker, I've my own directorial venture this year. Then there's my associate Tarun's film and an animation film. There's lots of room for television. I've learnt one thing from my father. Never put your feet up. How can they be up? They should always be on the ground for walking. There's always time to do more."

Wax returns for SRK!

Shah Rukh Khan has recieved the confirmation letter from Madame Tussauds. Now he can fulfill his long-overdue promise to his kids…

Kunal M Shah

After being introduced as the new host of KBC, Shah Rukh Khan is now ready for another unveiling of sorts. The curtain will be raised on a wax statue of the actor at Madame Tussauds in London. SRK has received the confirmation letter from the prestigious Madame Tussauds. How does it feel to be the third Indian actor to get room at wax museum? "To begin with, I was so tied up that I did not even check my emails for over a month. My inbox was flooded with over 300 emails, most of them were from a lady called Niki Hobb and others from Bobby Khan who co-ordinated the deal. My mother always wanted me to be there for some strange reason. It certainly is a great honour for me. I never took my children to Madame Tussauds, and always told them that I would take them there once I had wax figure of mine there. I have finally got the confirmation letter. They want to unveil the statue around Easter time," he says.

Namaste Madame: Shah Rukh Khan

Coming back to KBC, Shah Rukh says, "The best compliment I received is that I am doing KBC my way. My friends from the film industry, Arjun, Preity and Priyanka called me up to congratulate me. It is a challenge to do a new episode every day. But I am loving every minute of it. I am here to see that at the end of the day, even if contestants lose the game, I bring a smile to their face."

What about new terms and phrases on the show? SRK says, "We came up with almost all the phrases spontaneously. For instance, the 'lock it' thing came up and I thought of Kaboos which means finality. I have even used the word in the video. There were other phrases too, like Khuris jama do, Narkunda but I liked 'freeze kiya jaaye' as it has a trendy, young feel to it."

Did the pre-show hype unnerve you? "I woke up one day to find KBC hoardings everywhere. I have been part of the industry for 20 years now and hype in not a new thing to me. However, I was definitely anxious about the show as I worked really hard on it. I knew that there would be inevitable comparisons. I was most concerned about being able to create a new identity for the show that would be in sync with mine," he says.

Criticism is part of the game, literally. "I got a message from a little girl in London who said that I should not massage people as I am too big for that. She said that I should ask the contestants to massage me instead. I guess I will try that in one of the episodes. Some people have said that I should not be so informal; I think host's chair in KBC is like that of a barber's. It takes me back to my days in Delhi, when I would visit a roadside hazaam (barber) for massages."

SRK loves to interact with people. "I am anti-social and hate going out. My family has to literally drag me out. But I love to perform and I like people. And at some level they identify with me. Fans who have seen me doing live shows will vouch for it. I love the fact that 6 days in a month I meet around 500 people a day. I dance with them, I click pictures and sign autographs for them, and I like it," he says.

But the comparisons with Amitabh Bachchan are inevitable? "Actually, there is no ground for comparisons as Mr Bachchan is physically very different from what I am. When someone else takes over from me, he will be different too. I can't do what Shekhar Suman and Karan Johar do on their respective shows. I think it is a little silly to compare people. As for my rivalry with Mr Bachchan, it is nonexistent and to bring up this issue is embarrassing. I have had such so-called problems even with Hrithik Roshan, Yash Chopra, Ajay Devgan, Salman Khan. And these are as fake as fake can be."

KBC News - When he hugged me I didn't want to let go!

Lalitha scores with SRK!

Every day hundreds of SRK fans arrive at Film City in the excitement that today will be the day that they will finally get to meet their favourite star. From autograph and photo requests to gifts especially for King Khan you get to see it all on the KBC sets.

While shooting for the third episode we met Lalitha, a fastest finger first contestant, from Jharkhand. She couldn't contain her excitement as she told us about how much she loved the star and couldn't wait to meet him and shake his hand. "I can't wait to see him on the floor. And now that I've heard SRK hugs in the offering he better watch out!" she exclaimed as her husband stood by her side.

She continued to show us a scrapbook on Shah Rukh that she has continued to maintain over time. From pictures to other details, the book has almost everything you would need to know about the star. She told us she planned to handover her scrap book to SRK when she met him at the end of the show and also hoped to take home a photograph she takes with him.

So what happened when Lalitha met her superstar?

"Oh my God! I can't believe I met him. It felt so good. And when he hugged me... I can't tell you how great it made me feel. He was so sweet. I handed him over the book I made on him and he has promised to take it home and keep it," says Lalitha unable to contain her joy.

SRK = Hugs, proposals and racing hearts!

When Shah Rukh Khan was named as the new host for KBC, women all around the world were sighing with pleasure. From teenage women to married housewives, everyone wants to get onto the sets just so they can hug and speak to King Khan. Women were turning green with envy when Guggi received not one but two massages during his time on the hot seat. And on Thursday, when Vasu from Delhi, proposed to SRK she wasn't the first and definitely not the last either!

Vasu spoke to KBClive about her experience on the hot seat across SRK. "He was so good to me. It feels like a dream. I not only got to talk to him but to hug him... you know actually touch him! And then when he said those dialogues to me… ohhhh…. I feel so good! And I know he has a beautiful marriage with Gauri and I am happy for him but I just had to tell him that I wanted to marry him too. I just like him so much!"

"When he was saying that dialogue from DDLJ – which is my favourite movie - I'm telling you my heart felt like it was going to burst… it was crazy...and I don't think I can ever believe it happened to me!" says Vasu who is over-the-moon after meeting Khan.

Also present on the seats on Thursday were students from Symbiosis Institute, Pune who were as ecstatic even if they weren't SRK's contestants. As soon as they saw their star get on stage the applause and cat calls were enough to make even Khan blush!

Picture this – Shah Rukh gets on stage to start the show and comes face to face with a bevy of screaming women ranging from 15 to 50 years! One young girl yells out 'I love you SRK!' while the second one says 'Marry me Shah Rukh!' and the third one who doesn't want to be left out decides she's going to hug him real tight at the end of it when he takes the customary photographs with his contestants and audience members.

Slowly but surely one thing has definitely become clear to the crew on the sets that once the cameras stop rolling the KBC set becomes incidental and it's just SRK with his fans. And thereon he has eyes for them and they have eyes only for him.

KBC News - KBC: All the action from week one…

KBC and SRK are already changing lives!

KBC is a week old and the latest words on every one's lips seems to be 'freeze it' or 'alat palat'. As the world reschedules their diaries to ensure they don't miss their daily dose of fun and information with King Khan, we look back at the week gone by.

The week began with welcoming last season's contestant Prasenjit Sarkar from Kolkata. Having waited for a year for his chance to win some money, Sarkar walked away with 12, 50,000 rupees. Next on the hot seat was Ramakrishna Guggila who managed to get people on and off the sets upset when he crashed to the bare minimum threshold of 20,000 rupees. But he has also help build another spark in all the KBC contestants - now everyone hopes they could reach the hot seat just so they can get that massage!

Mohit Mahipal from Issar, Haryana replaced Guggi and played like you would expect from a businessman – with patient, calculated risks and utmost ease. It's no wonder then he is the highest winner till date of the season! Mahipal's exit from the game gave Vinayak Karan a chance to claim his right on the 2 crore prize money. Sadly though, he was unable to go very further into the game and left with 80,000 rupees.

By the time Vasu Jaitley from New Delhi arrived on the hot seat, everyone at home was definitely getting into the game with their favourite host SRK. From marriage proposals to being serenaded on stage on national network by the country's heartthrob, Jaitley got to experience it all. And to add to her booty of happiness, she had already reached 3, 20,000 rupees at close of play. Being a rollover contestant, she will now get a chance on Monday night to further her quest to winning the total money at stake.

From high stake winners to gut wrenching losses the first week of the show has simply shown what the show is all about – taking well thought out intelligent chances!

So as you enjoy your weekend, make sure you come back Monday night to find out if the first lady contestant of the season is also the first crorepati of the new season!

KBC News - Businessman Mohit becomes KBC's highest winner

Meeting SRK makes Mohits day!

Mohit Mahipal from Issar was ecstatic last evening as he became the highest winning contestant till date on KBC when he won Rs. 25 lakh. Being a true business man, Mahipal played the game very intelligently and with a calm demeanor even though on national television.

He spoke to us after his exit from the game about his experience on the hot seat. "I did have a great time there. Shah Rukh made me feel so comfortable that it hardly felt like I was playing for such a high stakes," says Mohit who was accompanied by his mother and two cousins to the show.

"I don't know what I will do with the money yet. I have a very young son so I would like to invest the money so I can use it for his future," speaks the true businessman.

So how was it meeting SRK?

Mohit says he was having too much fun playing with the new host to want to stop. "It felt very nice playing with SRK especially when he made the effort to speak to my family. He wanted to know details of my family which was very sweet. Also, he just made me feel so comfortable and at ease that I didn't want it to end. Even when I decided to leave the game he didn't make me feel bad about it... in fact he was supportive of my decision."

72,000 SMSes and a dream!

By: Upala KBR
January 26, 2007

Vinayak Karan from Secunderabad has sent a whopping 72,000 SMSes to KBC ever since it began in 2000.

This eager KBC beaver finally lived his dream on January 24, when he was called to participate in KBC3 with ShahRukh Khan as host.

Did you really send 72,000 SMSes?

Yes. I have sent 72,000 SMSes and even made 300 phone calls through VSNL every day. It's a great concept. Initially,

I never knew what KBC was about. Then I discovered the beauty of GK. Of course, the money was another factor. Finally, when I did get selected it turned out to be a great experience.

With Shah Rukh it was fun, money and entertainment. I was even selected last year when Mr Bachchan was hosting it, but then he fell ill and I didn't know if it would start again.

Have you recovered the money you spent on the SMSes?

Yes, though I cannot disclose the amount. It's definitely over a lakh and includes the cost of my air tickets, apart from everything else. It was all worth it. I never expected I would be in the hot seat. It depends purely on luck and fate.

How was SRK?

I am not a movie freak and I have never watched his films, but Shah Rukh is extremely polite and down-to-earth.

When I was talking to him, I never felt like I was sitting with a superstar.

Who is better — SRK or Bachchan?

Mr Bachchan was good with his witticisms and comments, while SRK is a people's person. Everyone is good in their individual way.

It's not about SRK or Mr Bachchan being better. That's not important. Both are of different temperaments and personality. It's about the change of concepts — which KBC is better.

So which KBC is the better one?

I like this one. The concept is fun and entertaining. The change is there — it's less about money and more about entertainment.

Shah Rukh is well-known for his tongue-in-cheek humour… Yes, but it's great fun being there with him! I loved every minute of it. Mr Bachchan's image was more mature and reserved.

You used up all your lifelines. Were you nervous?

No. I was happy I had used them all or I would have ended with zero amount. I was just happy to have crossed the Rs 20,000 barrier.

What do you do?

I am a team leader in a BPO and I have a BTech in Computer Science.

And yet you didn't know what the F on a keyboard stands for?

No. I had never thought about it, so the question came out of the blue for me. I was caught unawares!

Amitabh claims he hasn't seen SRK on KBC3!
By: Upala KBR
January 26, 2007

A day after HiTLIST wrote about how Amitabh Bachchan had gone positively cuckoo in his praise for beta Abhiskhek in Guru ('What have you done with the Big B?', HiTLIST, 24/01/07), I got a bizarre message from him that said: "Got your SMSes…was busy…send your questions on email, mark it to Rosy Singh… will respond."

Of course, I hadn't messaged him for an interview, but I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity either. So I mailed him our questions and a few hours later this is the response I got:

"Herewith the responses to your questions. I send them to you with some apprehensions. Keeping the ethics of your profession and journalistic norms, I would want the interview to go as it has been conducted. Editing, or cleaning up, the replies would go against this.

So, keep and print the questions as typed, as also the responses. You will appreciate that my answers are done keeping the questions put before me. If you change the question or the reply, as is often done, it looses its quality and, I daresay, an element of dishonesty creeps in. My trust in you will depend on this."

And then the threat that if we had a problem with his request, he "shall send the interview somewhere else."

(As you will notice Mr B, I haven't changed a word of the interview (including your misspelling of 'loses'). I've let you have your say, but it is every interviewer's right to have the last word. And so you shall find my take at the end of every question. Here's hoping you will take my responses in the same sporting spirit that I took yours. I look forward to many more such fun interviews.)

How well do you think Aishwarya Rai will fit in as the Bachchan bahu?

Traditionally, she will be the 'bahu', but for me and my family, she will be our daughter!

Perhaps you could direct me to a gauge that measures the 'wellness' of the presence of a daughter in the family, so that I may adequately respond to your rather odd query!

(Yes, Mr B. Perhaps at this point, all other queries except Abhishek's performance in Guru will sound odd to you.)

What are the qualities that you like in Ash?

They have already been expressed in another interview, but if you do not mind repetition I shall express it again. 'Her inner beauty is far greater than her much renowned outer.'

(True, but I didn't think you would repeat yourself ad verbatim, ad nauseam.)

There were reports that Mrs Jaya Bachchan didn't approve of Abhishek's choice as she didn't want a star bahu. Comment.

I wish to physically see these reports! And I would appreciate it greatly if you refrained from hiding behind journalistic ethics, of protecting your source. For, how else would we reconcile ourselves to the fact that this is not titillated manufacturing, for good copy.

(I'd like to point out that protecting one's source is not hiding behind journalistic ethics, it is the first rule of journalism. And speaking of reports, would you also like to see trade reports of Guru while we're at it?)

Have you set Abhishek's wedding date?

Not yet.

(I'm guessing you will announce the date at a time convenient to you. Erm, when is Abhishek's next release?)

Is it true that the wedding will be held at Amby Valley and a reception organised by Wizcraft in Mumbai?

Since nothing has been decided yet, this query falls in the realm of heightened speculation.

(Didn't you also brush off Abhishek and Ash's romance as "speculation" a few months ago?)

The buzz is that you, Abhishek and Ash will be going on a world tour from August to Europe, USA and the Far East?

Yes it is true. Along with a host of other prominent artistes and colleagues. And we are working on the modalities so that we can make a media announcement shortly.

(Great. I'm looking forward to the three of you dancing to Kajra re. Again.)

When you say Abhishek's future films will be super hits aren't you playing the doting dad bit too far? Predicting the future is difficult.

You sound as though you would not wish that! Yes, I am a doting dad and you are not going to tell me how 'far' I can go with that! Predicting the future is always difficult, but also, so very motivational. Better to be tough and motivational than diffident!

(So are you saying that Hirthik's papa, John's papa and Viveik's papa are NOT doting dads?)

Which is more difficult: being India's No 1 respected icon or a loving dad?

India's No 1 respected icon' is far too presumptuous an epithet for my bearing. I have never believed in it and never shall. And being a loving Dad is never difficult. It's a given!

(Ah, the humble Mr B that I love and adore finally surfaces!)

Aren't you pushing the doting papa title too far?

I shall push it to the end of the universe! You got a problem with that?
(Frankly, I think it's more YOUR problem than mine.)

People feel that you want Abhishek to take on your mantle. Comment.

I am not in possession of any mantle. But even if I were, yes, it would be the proudest moment for me, if he were to take it on. It's what every father wishes. But has he not already?

While shooting on a street in Bangkok a mother pointed to me and screamed to her little son, 'Look, look! That's Abhishek Bachchan's father!' Life could not have been better!

(Have you ever considered writing fiction? Something tells me you'd be good at it.)

Once Ash gets married to Abhishek all of you will come together under Brand Bachchan. What is your perception of Brand Bachchan?

I know only one word — Family Bachchan! I do not understand the meaning of the word Brand Bachchan.

(All those ads, and you STILL don't know the meaning of Brand Bachchan? Sigh.)

A lot of people feel that you announced Ash and Abhishek's engagement last week to make sure that the Guru collections got better.

My respect for you as a journalist suddenly dropped!

(Thankfully, I'm the sort of journalist who craves respect from the readers and not the interviewees, so I'll survive this.)

Is it true that you had the kiss between Aishwarya and Hrithik in Dhoom:2 removed from the theatres?

My respect for you dropped further — careful — before you lose all of it!
(Please refer to answer above!)

Till when would you like to go on acting?

My dear friend and colleague, Shah Rukh Khan, feels I should continue till I am 110 years old! I would tend to agree with him! Disappointed?

(Oh no, Mr B, please continue working. I love you in Technicolour. It's your new off-screen persona that worries me.)

Have you recovered from your health problems completely?

Yes. Prayers from well-wishers such as yourself have ensured that. Thank you!

(I'll continue to pray for your good health. After all, my life would be so dull without such wonderful chitchats, no?)

Any resolutions for 2007?

I make no resolutions. I just RESOLVE!

(I like that attitude. I might just adopt it!)

Have you seen Shah Rukh's KBC3?

No.

(Right. And I'm the Queen of England!)

Efforts on to make KBC more light-hearted: Shah Rukh

NEW DELHI: New host of Kaun Banega Crorepati Shah Rukh Khan on Thursday said he was happy with the response to the show and is trying to make it more light-hearted.

"I am very happy. Everyone has worked hard on the show... We are trying to make it more light-hearted, more approachable, so that it would be a fun for everyone to watch," he said in an interview with a TV news channel.

He said the show has achieved 50-60 per cent of its target and would make more progress in the days to come.

Khan also expressed excitement over the type of responses he is getting from the participants in the show.

"One lady has approached me while another has said that she does not like me", he said.
