King and them

Screen On & Off

In the Wednesday episode of the new Kaun Banega Crorepati, Shah Rukh Khan will go Haryanvi. After Bengali and Telugu during the first day, first show on Monday night, SRK shows his proficiency in Haryanvi as he welcomes Mohit Mahipal from Hissar.

To make Mohit comfortable, SRK chats with him about his kid and wife and also urges him to translate "I love you" in Haryanvi.

Mohit declares that he will give all the cash he wins on the show to his mother. Mohit's friend on the sets is Vinay Gupta who points out that he wants 50 per cent of the prize money in case Mohit wins.

After Mohit loses out, SRK plays Fastest Finger First with a fresh set of contestants and Vinayak Karan from Hyderabad makes it to the hot seat.

The new hot seat occupant wants to buy a Golden Bed if he wins Rs 2 crore. Vinayak rolls over to the Republic Day special episode on Thursday because of lack of time.

The first female contestant to play KBC with SRK is Vasu Jaitely. She not only recites some shayari for King Khan but also admits that she has seen Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge 50 times.

Watch SRK enacting a DDLJ scene for Vasu, Wednesday and Thursday at 9 pm, on STAR Plus.

Brilliant actor, is now a classy host

WITHKBC3, Shah Rukh has proved to everyone that he is a brilliant actor and now, a classy host too.
It is unfair to compare him with the Amitabh Bachchan, who is a legend in his own right.
One should appreciate that Shah Rukh has achieved this feat at a considerably young age as compared to the legend.
Amitabh Bachchan's baritone voice and professional disposition decorated the show with regality. Shah Rukh has spruced up the programme with his friendly aura and zingy charisma.
Shah Rukh has also injected loads of fun with his pompous, self-deprecating humour and his trademark wit. KBC is another feather in his stylish cap.

FORShah Rukh, Kaun Banega Crorepati must have been a difficult task. In films, Shah Rukh acts the role of the character and his personality gets mingled with the role. But to anchor KBC and to go beyond his predecessor must be the greatest test for Shah Rukh. Congratulations Shah Rukh, not only for doing a brilliant job, but for walking the extra mile so comfortably.

PRAKASH Deshmukh, Thane
HE IS a complete flop. SRKcannot compete with Big B in such a show.

BOMI Billimoria
UNDOUBTEDLY it was an outstanding performance. I always believed that SRKwould emulate his predecessor.

KHUSHAL Sachania, Vile Parle
BIGB was the best. But the contestants reacted like he was a school principal. SRK is like a sports teacher. So contestants would feel a lot more free with SRK. KBC rocks.

KASHMIRA
I SAW the show and liked it. But I think SRK talks a bit too much. He is used to performing energetically on the big screen, but this appears odd on small screen. Please advise him to talk less and concentrate more on the questions and answers.

SIMON Fernandes
SRK TRIED to imitate Big B. His voice did not match up to Bachchan's, he slouched and clasped the contestant's hand too often. Given the opportunity, any good actor can do what SRK has done. It is not a big achievement or some great performance.

HIREN Saraiya
YOUR headline should have read 'He Khant do it'. Shah Rukh must have forgotten that this is not a Karan Johar or Yash Chopra film.
It was apparent that he wanted to show he was better than Big B. All in all, it was a poor performance. Idon't expect KBC to last long.

No, he Khant!

''KHAN he do it?'' No he Khant!
SRK might be good in his own capacity, but if a comparison is to be made, he is way behind Amitabh Bachchan.
The aura and the charm that characterised KBCwith Mr Bachchan is missing. The personality and character of the show has weakened.
Most importantly, Mr Bachchan's command over the language and his presentation style got us glued to the programme.
After Monday's opening show, I don't think I will be drawn to see every episode, like I used to do earlier.
Let us accept the fact that however hard SRKtries he will not be able to stretch his 5 ft 9 inches to 6 ft 3 inches, which he admits.
Kyunki Don banna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai.
SRK is a horse that is fast and used to races. But Mr Bachchan is an elephant, royal and majestic. Remember, ''Haathi baith bhi jaaye to bhi ghode (ya gadhe) se uncha hi rahata hai.''

RASHIDA
SHAH RUKH tried to behave smart to show that he is better than Amitabh Bachchan. Somebody please tell him he doesn't compare with Mr Bachchan.

DIVYESH
I don't think SRK comes close to Amitabh Bachchan. Mr Bachchan was sophisticated and entertaining. His dig at Mr Bachchan on Hindi speaking left a bad taste in the mouth.

Ms SHIM Jussa, Mira Road
THEfirst impression is the lasting impression. Badshah Khan was great in the first episode of KBC. So what if he does not use sophisticated Hindi with a sprinkle of Sanskrit, which we cannot understand anyway! But he excels in our matrubhasha.

HEMEN Shah
Shah Rukh Khan's debut on KBC was excellent. He will get a firm grip on things after a few episodes.
SHRADDHA Shastri
Whether it is Koyla, K2H2, K3G, KANK or KBC3, Shah Rukh was, he is and will always be the best. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to express our views.

MAHESH Engineer
Shah Rukh should watch himself in KBC. It will be an overdue self-realisation and introspection process.

RUPALI Suryavanshi
I DID not like Shah Rukh Khan on KBC. Amitabh was better.

MANOJ Rastogi
SRKis known to use the media to his advantage. The show has lost its charm, dignity and essence. SRK does not compare with Amitabh Bachchan in language or charisma.
The music video was downright vulgar.
As for Ekta Kapoor, Karan Johar and Ashok Pandit's eulogies, ''paani mein rahna hain to magarmach se bair nahin karte''.

KBC 3 fares better in ratings

BS Reporter in Mumbai
January 24, 2007 10:28 IST

The first episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 (KBC3) hosted by Shah Rukh Khan on Star Plus got a rating of 5.35 from aMap, a television rating agency.

The rating system that was set up in 2004 tracked the viewership (age group 4 plus) of KBC3 in the Hindi speaking states such as Rajasthan, UP, MP, Maharashtra and Gujarat among others.

The aMap analysis shows that KBC3 opened with a viewership share of 24 per cent, which was much higher than the 12 per cent share of the two serials (Virasat and Karam Apna Apna) on Star Plus that it replaced.

aMap's rating system is different from that of its rival television monitoring agency TAM. "Last week, Star's highest rated show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi had a TVR of 4.5 in our system. KBC has performed better than that," says aMap chief Tapan Pal.

The aMap data show the viewer retaining power of the programme was very high. This means that though its viewership dipped during commercial breaks, almost all the audiences came back to the show after the break. Among the 20 brands that were advertised during the one-hour show, Motorola's Motophone was the most watched ad on the show.

Star India sources, however, say that aMap rating is not widely accepted. "Wait for the TAM data and you will know that we have started with a bang. Over the duration of the 52 episodes, our average television rating will not be less than 18," he added.

'The comparison is not fair to him'

Gayatri Jayaraman[

ShahRukh Khan on his children, his confidence, and the supposed war with Amitabh Bachchan.

So, you nervous, confident or over confident?

I am anxious. Everybody thinks I am pompous but that's a just a front for me. Inside, I'm anxious. For me it's the creative process. You create something in isolation – alone with your thoughts in the moment – and when it is exposed, there is a huge explosion of public opinion. In the film industry, I know where I'm headed and whether it's the right direction. Here, I don't know.

Are you coping with the obvious comparisons?

There has been hype, pressure, comparisons with this other gentleman that I am not comfortable talking about. Because all this negative and positive carries to the children, and I'm wary about that. However what really hurts me are the SMSes.

The SMSes?

That newspapers carry in reader's polls. When a Geetika from Bhayander says 'SRK sucks' that really hurts me. I read them all. The good and the bad. It's like a pimple on the face. You don't notice the rest of the face, but the pimple you notice. I remember the nasty ones. Some are very rude.

So, is there any truth to 'SRK vs Mr Bachchan'?

He's an accomplished gentleman who's 64, and I am where I am, and at the stage where I am the comparison is not fair to him at all.

KBC SRK-ishtyle!

I like ShahRukh Khan. I am not a big SRK fanatic but nonetheless I like the guy. Something about him is quite endearing. As my Pa would say, "He is a nice, affable guy who looks like Dilip Kumar!" Personally, I don't vouch for the latter part but yes, he definitely is genial and sociable.

SRK is a phenomenon. SRK is a brand. SRK is (almost) everything.

From an 80 year old grandma to a pre-teen Neha - everyone loves SRK. They love him - they love his oodles of "X-factor".

You might be exceptionally talented and liked. But then, there are times when you just don't appeal. No, maybe its not age or lack of capability - it's just that the so-called X-factor deserts you. Like a coward captain in the middle of a storm in a wild sea.

That is exactly what happened to SRK in KBC.

He knew he could not be AB Sr. He is just too classy and preachy for SRK. And he knew that he was up against a legend. An icon. So imitation or repetition was out of question. 'Don'ning his role all the time and doing justice to it is like asking Fardeen Khan to write like Tagore! (Apologies for the crazy allusion!)

So the easiest thing to do was to be himself. The way we know SRK. And he did that. And a tad more. And there in lies my issue with SRK as the KBC host.

Yes, SRK was friendly. He cracked up the audience with his characteristic jokes and anecdotes. He charmed his way into the hearts of the millions watching him on screen. His energy was electrifying. He was oozing of bon homie - especially when he called a Bengali participant's wife 'Boudi' and called 'Vekatesh' by the name 'Venky'. And he had done his homework well. Be it the recitation of a vernacular poetry or peppering the humor element in - he was excellent. Everyone was clapping and smiling. Everyone was happy - their own SRK was at his best. And then suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, he stumbled. And how!

Why does he need to make digs at AB Sr (Remember his opening speech about shudh Hindi and what coats would he be wearing?) Beats me again. And why on earth does he need to bring in that "regional" flavor to everything? From Compaq da to frequent use of Telgu - why, SRK, why? Is there not enough of regionalism already in our country? And then came in the final blow. Why on earth does SRK need to give a massage? Just to show that he is one of us and that he is a friend and not a strict school-teacher asking questions. Nah!! Beats me, SRK.

I know people would still like SRK as much - even if he keeps hopping between the jobs of an anchor and a masseur and even if he keeps adjusting his tie for no reason - SRK would still rule prime time and ensure that all eyeballs converge on him at 9 every evening. Like someone said, "Only sex and SRK sell in today's world." True. I agree but with a minor footnote.

SRK as a KBC host would be much better if he acts as one of us - but in a more TONED DOWN AND SUBTLE WAY.

Till then, SRK - Main aapko gale lagana chahta hoon!!

Shahrukh's Blog --- Day one!

January 22, 2007, Monday

Ladies and gentlemen….boys and girls… thank you for stopping by kbclive.com.

The past week has been quite a whirlwind and I went through a whole lot of emotions – from excitement to ecstasy, from heart break to heart stopping moments. I don't want to spoil all your fun so I won't give away too many details but I do feel that the new KBC season that lays ahead both of us is going to be noting short of a rollercoaster ride. And I do hope I get a chance to hold your hand through it!

Honestly speaking the recording of the first episode was a moment we were all waiting and working for and so it was full of excitement, anxiety and anticipation. We all wanted to do our best job and I hope you like what you see on your television screens. The initial moments of stepping on to the sets for the first time did have me feeling butterflies in my stomach, but before I knew it, I was laughing and joking with my first contestant. It was a great feeling when we actually began shooting the first episode... All the months that I…we… had been rehearsing and working for finally lay before us and at the end of it I felt really really good.

I've had a great time meeting with people and my contestants have been nothing short of brilliant. They have shared so much of themselves with me and I feel honoured to know that they trust me. In tonight's episode, I get to spend time with last season's rollover contestant Prasenjit Sarkar. Prasenjit had been waiting for this moment for a year now and I have no clue how he has survived it. If I was in his place, the KBC crew would have been so fed up of me that I would have become a "roll out" contestant and not "rollover".

I also have a little treat lined up for you. Just before the first episode goes on air tonight, we will be premiering my KBC video just for you. This was definitely a first for me as I have never done a music video before. I used to finish my KBC shoots and then quickly run across from Film City to Filmistan to finish up the music video through the night. So in a way, yes, I have spent the first week as KBC host having sleepless nights...

I do hope you have as much fun seeing KBC as I have had recording it. Do let me know your thoughts on the programme… I would love to hear from you. I promise to come back very soon and talk to you but only if you promise that I will get to see you tonight and back on kbclive.com very soon...

Main aapka intezar kar raha hoon!

Shahrukh's Blog - Day Two

January 24, 2007, Wednesday

Ladies and gentlemen… boys and girls… thank you for stopping by at kbclive.com.

Oh my God! It's only been two shows and I feel like I've already seen so much… When Prasenjit left I was very happy for him. I feel he made the right decision and took the sum of money – I would have done the same.

Next came my friend Guggi MBBS – only to break my heart! I wanted him to take home the money but sadly it was not to be. He was very sweet. I remember him telling me that he had postponed going to the US for his further studies and then he came here in the hopes that he could win some money. He had dreams to fulfill. And then when he crashed… oh… I felt so sad at that time. I had my watch on at that time and since I couldn't change anything - the rules of the game are such - I just decided to give him my watch! I hope it gives him some sort of happiness and solace. I hate to see people lose including myself.

Guggi left the hot seat for Mohit Mahipal from Issar. He is playing quite well right now and I do hope he continues that way.

I think the biggest and happiest part of my journey here on KBC has been interacting with the people who come. I have always loved interacting with people and I think that is also the reason why my movies may succeed because they make that connect. I also understand to a certain extent why this money is very important to them because I have been there too. We all have our dreams and aspirations and I do hope and pray that each and every one of you who do come onto KBC win as much as is possible... I think the first two episodes have shown us how to play the game. Be a little careful, my contestants. I know we all want that little bit more but please please be a little careful - if not for you, then for me.

On that note I will sign off now but only if you promise to see me tonight.

Hamesha ki tarah, main aapka intezaar kar raha hoon :o)

TV dominated over Films: 4 Top Reasons!

Four top stories dominated viewership on small screen in last ten days leaving the bigger screen behind. It rarely happens that film world is overtaken by the telly-world in such a big way. Let us take a look at the Top 4 reasons for the same.

Reason No. 4: Rakhi Sawant v/s Kashmira Shah

Kashmira came back on the Bigg Boss show as a guest and manipulated controversies against Rakhi Sawant. The item girl was left alone by the rest of the inmates, Rahul Roy, Carol Gracias and Ravi Kissen. Rakhi got so frustrated that she even threatened suicide on camera. Luckily everything cooled down in two days and all were back to being good friends with each other. As the show is reaching its climax on coming Saturday its viewership has increased manifold.

Reason No. 3: Abhi-Aish Engagement

All the channels started beaming out Breaking News headlines about Abhi-Aish engagement and giving minute by minute updates about the proceedings. Then it was followed up every passing day with anything connected to their scheduled shaadi as big news. News channels are even following Aishwarya's parents to wherever they are going apart from keeping a close eye on all of Bachchan parivaar's associates and friends.

Reason No. 2: Shilpa Shetty in Celebrity Big Brother

Images of Shilpa feeling lonely and crying at the Big Brother show started making rounds of television news channels. Just as people started reacting to them, the Dus star's inmate in the Big Brother house, Jade Goody, abused her racially which led to world wide protests. Indian channels were full of debates and updates about what is happening at the Big Brother house. The coverage did not just stop at Goody's expected eviction from the reality show but is now currently following it day by day right till its grand finale.

Reason No. 1: King Khan on KBC

Kaun Banega Crorepati started on STAR Plus with the King Khan as its new host. The viewership for its first episode broke many records and the audiences have embraced their new host cum dost with amazing warmth. With a heavy chip on his shoulder of hosting one of India's most popular show which had the Big B as its legendary host, Shahrukh Khan won hearts instantly with his own inimitable style. Cinema halls, restaurants and shopping malls have already started registering a drop once the telecast of KBC begins at 9 PM.

King Khan clicks

SRK in his new avatar as "KBC-3" host simply rocks. He has with consummate ease stepped into Big B's shoes and won over the sceptics with his impromptu humour and friendly chatter. King Khan plays to the gallery making full use of his larger-than-life screen image. And the way he interacts with the participants like giving a massage to one of them to ease his tension and his insistence that the contestant should not use the word 'quit' when he wants to leave but say 'he wants to hug him' has worked wonders with the viewers.

Amitabh Bachchan: I haven't seen KBC yet

As the new season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' or KBC takes off with Shahrukh Khan taking over from the indomitable Amitabh Bachchan as anchor of the show, comparisons are inevitable. But the 'Big B' himself, refuses to take the bait.

KBC, back in a brand new avatar with a brand new quiz master, seems to be looking for a brand new image as well. But all the hype around Shahrukh seems to be lost on the man whom he has replaced. Amitabh Bachchan's first reaction was this disinterested comment:

"I haven't connected to it, because I haven't seen (the programme) yet."

Amitabh Bachchan might have little interest in the fate of the new show, but that has not stopped the producers of KBC from trying out every trick in the book to reinvent a show haunted by the ghosts of last season when the formidable Big B over shadowed all.

Adman Prahlad Kakkar opines, "The new KBC is much more informal, it's much more in connect. There was a sense of reserve and tremendous sense of awe that Mr Bachchan invoked. Shahrukh invokes an equal sense of connect and being one with the contestants."

Shahrukh as host presents a younger and more relaxed KBC (Courtesy Star Plus)

Truly, gone is the straight jacketed larger than life father figure – replaced by the irreverent, relaxed and approachable Shahrukh. If Amitabh with his impeccable Hindi had the audience mesmerized, then Shahrukh in complete Bollywood style set the tone right in the first episode itself – even if it meant having a little fun at Big B's expense! Khan briefly parodied Bachchan's ornate style of delivery and concluding with a layman's "Samjhe?" (Got it?)

Another departure from the old, is the conscious effort being made to rope in young viewership. The famous "lock kiya jaye" phrase has been replaced with "freeze kar do", while "computerji" has been rechristened "Compaq-da".

While Shahrukh plays on his charm for all its worth, one cannot also miss the nervous energy. And for those still hung up on the Bachchan baritone – you can catch him in the ad breaks as Bachchan's brand Cadbury happens to be one of KBC'S chief sponsors!
