SRK Rocks!

SRK stumped everyone with his style, confidence and camaraderie on KBC last night. This is what some of the TV stars who watched the show had to say.

Sanjeeda Sheikh (Nimmo)
"Yesterday I saw Kaun Banega Crorepati. Shah Rukh was amazing in the show. I loved his spontaneity. He looked so charming. How can he be so intelligent and charming? If I am on the hotseat ever, this is what I'll ask him. Another thing I liked about the show was Shah Rukh's hugging style-the way he said bye to the contestant. Tonight I will be watching him again and I will tell my friends to watch KBC too."

Swapnil Joshi (Karan, Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethee)
"I watched yesterday's show. I'm a huge fan of Shah Rukh. I like his energy. There is some kind of magnetism in him which has already attracted the audience. I liked what he was wearing-his black coat. I thought when he said "Main Hoon Naa" to the rollover contestant, he was really cool. If I get a chance to be with him on the show it will be a great experience. It's a hit show. Tonight I'm looking forward to seeing him again."

Tanaaz Lal (Nach Baliye 2 participant)
"Of course I watched the show and I loved everything about it. I like Shah Rukh. He added his own style. One thing which I like about him on the show- He was very close to contestants. I liked his Bangla song… He was making the audience laugh..."

J.D. Mejatia (Harshad, Baa Bahu Aur Baby)
"I liked it. Shah Rukh is taking a lot of effort. I like the promo, the way he is interacting with the audience. I like the way he interacts with the audience. I loved it when he said, "Main lamba coat bhi phehnonga..aap keh toh main petticoat bhi pehnnonga…" He is adding his own humor which is great."

Monisha Khatwani, (Roz ki Baath and Kashmakash Zindagi Ki)
"The new KBC is amazing, I don't want to spot any differences in between SRK and Big B, but I like the way Shah Rukh Khan is hosting the show. He was very humble in the show, apart from this he was trying to speak in all the languages-Telugu or Bengali, and he was very appealing. Yes with Shah Rukh Khan as a host in KBC this idea will work hundred and ten percent".

From offering massages to tense contestants to using some new catchy phrases, SRK has lots of surprises planned.

The past week has been a busy one for Shah Rukh. He was shuttling between the KBC set, his movie and the music video. In fact he finished shooting for it only in the middle of last week. This will be the first music video for KBC as well as for SRK.

When the song was played for the audience during the recording of KBC's first episode yesterday, everyone including SRK himself wanted to dance and shake a leg to the tune. The song is in line with the theme of KBC and plays on Khan's famous line these days – kuch sawal aapki zindagi badal sakte hain.

So how did the idea come about?

"Siddharth Basu, Sameer Nair and I were just discussing the game that you know the game is actually played when it is played. What I mean is that we can do as many rehearsals but it's only real when it's actually played with the real contestant. The idea was to encourage people to ask questions because somewhere in our discussions it came up that an answer is not important unless it has a correct question attached to it. And life is all about questions. If you don't ask questions nothing in this world changes so I decided to do something younger, wacky version of KBC. I'm not saying that KBC is old but it is a serious show about questions and answers. We thought we would bring some mazaa and masti to the whole thing," says King Khan.

In the video the star is looking very trendy and cool in a black hooded zipper shirt coupled with a maroon jacket, dark glasses and a silver chain with a 'SRK' pendant. This is the first time SRK will be in seen in a music video. "The music video has been shot very extensively. It's a big video. And it is very relevant to KBC - Kar Le Kar Le Kuch Sawaal Tu Kar Le and I'm dancing to my first music video. So I hope it goes down well with everyone. Ganesh has sung it and conceptualized it. Vishal-Shekhar have done a great job with the song."

"It premieres January 22, 2007 and after that we will try to make it available for as a single on iTunes or wherever it is possible. The youngsters, I think, will really like it. It can be a night club kind of song," adds the star.

See what happened when SRK played the song for his audiences on KBC – this video coming soon on SRK Zone

9 on the clock and streets are empty

Cinemas, eateries lose crowds to SRK STORES IN SHOPPING MALLS THAT TUNED IN TO KBC PROVED TO BE CROWD-PULLERS, WITH SHOPPERS WALKING IN AND DISCUSSING SHAH RUKH'S INFORMAL AND WARM ACT

Kiran Wadhwa
Mumbai

RENUKA TALREJA stopped squabbling with her husband at precisely 8.55 pm on Monday. Sohan, a stock investor, and she had mutually declared a ceasefire till 10 pm.

Thane's Bineeta Sengupta, an info techie, left office at six and refused to cook dinner. Her 28-inch TV had her glued from 9-10 pm. Around the same time, entrepreneur Anmol Parekh asked her husband to hail a cab home from the airport, as she could not leave the house to pick him up.

These are fragments from an extraordinary day in the life of the city, a day on which the first episode of KBC 3 was beamed. It confirmed a generational powershift in Indian entertainment. Same show, same hotseat, a different host. The moment could not be missed.

The KBC 3 bug flew everywhere. Restaurants showed a tangible drop in clientele. "There was a 30 per cent decline in business on Monday across all our restaurants because of the show. We are expecting the same for the next few days until the novelty wears off," said Harpreet Singh, director, Only Parathas on Linking road in Khar.

Restaurateur Sachin Nagarkar, who owns 5 Spice, also served fewer customers. "My Fort branch saw a visible decrease in the number of patrons," Nagarkar said.

Stores in malls that tuned in to KBC proved to be crowd-pullers. "Shoppers walked up to the screens and soon there was a buzz about Shah Rukh Khan's informality and warmth," said Krishnan Iyer, Manager, Operations, Atria mall, Worli.

Late night shows in cinema halls too were affected. Cinemax unusually witnessed a larger audience for their 11 pm show than the 9.30 pm shows across their 30 screens in the city. "With Guru already in its third week, Khan's first KBC episode was inevitably a greater attraction. People prefer the 9.30 slot on weekdays, but yesterday (on Monday) they finished watching KBC and then came for a movie," said Devang Sampat, general manager, marketing and sales, Cinemax.

Even treadmills at gyms picked up pace as Shah Rukh jigged to the KBC tune. "There are at least 60 people working out at my gym at any point. All of them were comparing SRK with the Big B," said Leena Mogre, director, LM Fitness.

Some went as far as crediting KBC 3 for the light traffic on Monday evening. Businessman Hemang Patel shut shop early and reached home in Khar from Worli in 40 minutes. It usually takes him about an hour.

Special: Shah Rukh's KBC starts with an opening TVR of 5.3

agencyfaqs!
MUMBAI, January 24

The verdict is out. As per aMap's overnight ratings, 'KBC 3' on STAR Plus has managed to get a TRP of 5.3 (C&S, 4+, north, west and east India).

Among the metros, Mumbai has garnered the highest viewership with a TRP of 6.3, followed by Delhi at 2.5 and Kolkata at 2.

However, these figures are lower than the opening figures of 'KBC 2'. As per the aMap ratings, 'KBC 2' garnered a TRP of 9.5 in Mumbai, 6.5 in Delhi, and 5.4 in Kolkata.

Nevertheless, the performance of 'KBC 3' was better than the top-scoring shows in the previous week. For instance, according to aMap, 'Kyunki… Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' was the highest scorer last week with a TRP of 4.7.

Meanwhile, OMS (Optimum Media Solutions), in association with Hansa Research, conducted a survey in Mumbai and Delhi through the night of January 22 (after 10pm) till the morning of January 23, to gather the first impression of the viewers.

The study revealed that 60 per cent of the viewers had decided not to miss any further episodes of 'KBC 3'. The other 40 per cent will watch the next few episodes before making up their minds. In a similar pre-programme study done by OMS and Hansa Research, only 21 per cent had said that they wouldn't miss any episode; 71 per cent had preferred to wait and watch for a few episodes and then decide. The remaining 8 per cent had said they would not watch 'KBC 3' any further.

The comparison between 'KBC 3' and its predecessors would be incomplete without the comparison of the two show hosts – Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Only 19 per cent of the viewers felt that Khan was better than Bachchan, 51 per cent said Khan was as good as Bachchan, and 29 per cent said Khan couldn't measure up to Bachchan.

However, in the pre-programme survey, only 15 per cent of the respondents had expected Khan to better the Big B. Similarly, 27 per cent had expected Khan to be at par with Bachchan. So, in a way, more people have accepted Khan as the host. Interestingly, in the pre-programme survey, around 58 per cent of the respondents hadn't expected Khan to perform better than Bachchan.

The TAM figures for the programme will be available by February 1.

SRK's game plan!

The action has just started for SRK; it's back to his roots – television, from where he began his career and became a superstar. And the king Khan isn't leaving any stone unturned to make it the most memorable success story. "He has taken it on himself to see that his game show is successful and that is why he is himself sitting with the scriptwriters to give his inputs. Shah Rukh is an intelligent actor and his suggestions have been very useful. He's bringing in his own personal touch and great sense of humour," says a friend of the star. SRK for sure seems to be heading towards the right track!

Deepshika wants to meet SRK!!

Like they say, one's loss is another's gain, so is the case with film and television actor Deepshika who has bagged Rupali Ganguly's character in Paritosh Painter's stage play 'See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil' and headed towards Dubai with the rest of the cast. Confirming the fact that she has replaced Rupali, Deepshika says, "Yes. Since Rupali who had done the earlier shows in Mumbai, was holed up in Bigg Boss' den, I was approached and I accepted."

Where does her tv career stand? To which the Parveen Babi look-alike replies, "No more daily soaps for me as it blocks your dates and restricts the social life too. Now that I don't have any more EMIs (monetary loans) to keep up, I am going to experiment and enjoy my work." Like the way she did an episodic with Akela where the focus was on her cameo character. "I also love doing different types of roles. For instance the one in Akela was quiet and subtle while in Baa, Bahu aur Baby, it's a nautanki type."

After coming back from Dubai, her priorities lie in doing films and in this regard she expresses her desire to meet none other than the badshah of Bollywood. " I want to meet up with Shah Rukh Khan and work with him. I have acted in films like Koyla and Badshah with him. I want to catch up with all my film buddies and start acting in movies again," says the actor of movies like Dillagi, Pyar Mein Twist, Koyla and Badshah.

She brushes aside the topic on her relation with husband Jeet Upen saying, "it's just my work for me now." How come she is spotted at all Anuj Saxena parties when she has not worked with the multi-faceted actor at all?

"No, I have never worked with Anuj," affirms Deepshika, stating further, "I did a pilot for his production house. But we met in the USA as a part of dandiya troupe and he was my dancing partner. We became friends and if invited, I always make it a point to attend my friends' parties."

As for now, she is just back from entertaining and rocking the Middle East with her stage performances!

'SRK is very brainy'

January 24, 2007 13:59 IST

Meet the third participant on the new Kaun Banega Crorepati.

Mohit Mahipal hails from Hissar, Haryana. This 27 year old is a B Com graduate, is married and lives in a joint family. He is in business, dealing in photography goods like camera roll and paper to print photos.

"Everyone is a fan of Amitabh. His presentation was so nice that all liked it. In fact I had tried last season on KBC and got selected. I was supposed to come on the Amitabh-hosted KBC. But when Amitabhji felt sick Star TV promised me that whenever the programme starts, I will be given a chance and they kept their promise."

Adds Mahipal, "You can't compare both the KBCs. Amitabh is special in his own way. His elegance, his grace and his style is unmatchable. Whereas Shah Rukh is the powerhouse of energy -- his level is different altogether. He is very humorous and witty. You can't compare the hosts, but at the same time you can't compare both the KBC's, as this (new one) is more for the youth; it's energetic and lively. The language has also changed, its now more Hinglish."

When Mahipal was selected for the first time he was thrilled about getting to meet Amitabh. "I have been seeing his movies ever since I was a kid. I knew Amitabh's name even before I learnt my parents' name. He is one whom everybody likes. I was very disappointed when I got to know that the show got postponed."

"But my excitement returned when I got to know that I would get to meet Shah Rukh, as Amitabh and Shah Rukh are the top two names of the Bollywood industry. I was satisfied and something is better than nothing."

Mahipal feels Shah Rukh makes the contestant feel at ease. "You don't feel he is such a huge star when you are sitting in front of him. I am a very introverted person, but he even made me speak about myself and when I requested him to say Devdas dialogues in Haryanvi he immediately obliged. Shah Rukh could manage speaking Haryanvi in broken manner because of his film Paheli where he spoke in Rajasthani, very close to my mother tongue."

Mahipal thought there would be lots of retakes, but SRK gave retakes only when his voice was not clear or not recorded properly. SRK, he says, did not fumble much and that he is a one-take man.

"Shah Rukh needs a split second to think and say something really humorous and funny. I think anyone in his place would need so much time to think, but that is not the case with him. He is very spontaneous and brainy as he does all this without a script."

His friends had warned him about SRK's 'attitude,' but when he met SRK he did not find him like that. The superstar was very friendly, and hugged Mahipal several times. He talked like a normal man and was not at all proud. He made Mahipal feel totally comfortable.

"He walked up to me and started talking. He asked me about my family, where I live, what I do. All this was not recorded. This he did before I sat on the hot seat, in between the break, to know me and to make me comfortable. When during my questions I got stuck, he came and massaged my shoulder."

Mahipal believes the programme is a hit. "I loved the new KBC. But from the beginning of the first season of KBC, I felt the format is rock solid and the hosts are damn good -- they have their great fan following. Therefore this has to be a big hit."

Shah Rukh's act on KBC show draws mixed reactions from trade

By R. Manishaa, Bollywood Trade News Network

Even as news channels and critics are going overboard assessing SRK's performance on the KBC show vis--vis the Bachchan charisma, Vivek Vaswani, producer of Shah Rukh's forthcoming film, DULHA MIL GAYA, avers that SRK has already managed to capture the hearts of millions of viewers, with his energy, drive and verve. "I have not seen this level of energy and exuberance in the show since the past 100 episodes. The comic timing, the warmth and the abundant energy of SRK, which only he is capable of, have brought a new life to the show," says Vaswani, adding that there is no question of being anxious of confirming to expectations when it concerns SRK.

"I have known him since the RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN days and I know for a fact that he's never failed to go beyond expectations in every new endeavor that he has taken on in life. Comparisons are bound to happen since Mr Bachchan with his persona gave a distinct brand identity to KBC but I have a feeling that SRK will go way beyond with his impeccable style and charisma," he says.

However there are other people in the trade who disapprove of Shah Rukh's restless energy and his tendency to go overboard with the contestants. "I think SRK should be more mature in the way he conducts himself on the show. He should stick to the serious character of the program instead of resorting to frivolous jokes," says Executive Director of G-7 multiplex, Manoj Desai, who's also known to be a close friend of the Bachchan family. Desai is also critical of SRK's gesture of gifting his wrist watch to one of the contestants when he lost out on the prize money. "I don't think it was a very becoming act. It only gave the effect of being very dramatic and filmy instead of reflecting the character of the show," Desai observes.

He also adds that Shah Rukh's performance in the show will have a great impact on the box-office performance of his film. "It will make a hell of a difference but the real effect will be known only after the TRPs start coming after a week's time," he says.

Shah Rukh currently has three films under various stages of production, OM SHANTI OM, CHAK DE INDIA and DULHA MIL GAYA.
