Shah Rukh embraces hip-hop for KBC music video

Mumbai, Jan 15 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is going to host STAR Plus' popular quiz show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (KBC), is also featuring in a music video exclusively made for the show - his first such venture.

For the video, he has joined hands with singer-choreographer Ganesh Hegde who is presenting him in a completely new avatar. The two had earlier worked together for 'Don'.

The three-minute video is titled 'Kar le kar le tu aek sawal'.

'Shah Rukh has got a completely new, young look in the film. He will be seen donning a hip-hop look and the clothes are also designed to suit the mood of the video. The song is a fusion of hip-hop and Indian music,' Hegde told IANS.

'We have put four huge, lavish and expensive sets in Mumbai. Even now I am shooting for it. We started shooting on Jan 10 and will wrap it up by tomorrow. After that we will do the post-production work,' he added.

As far as Shah Rukh's clothes are concerned, Hegde said: 'I shared my thoughts with (filmmaker) Karan Johar. He has done the styling accordingly.'

The music video will be unveiled Jan 22 just before the quiz show goes on the air. STAR Plus is, however, going to 10-15-second-long show teasers of the music video before it actually premieres.

'It was SRK's idea to come up with a music video for KBC. He then shared the idea with his team,' said a STAR Plus source.

The music video is conceptualised, choreographed, directed and sung by Hegde. Music is by Vishal-Shekhar while Shabbir, R.D. Telang, Kumar and Asif Baig have penned the lyrics.

SRK ka KBC!

ShahRukh Khan returns to television with India's most popular game show KBC. At a power packed press conference held in suburban Mumbai King Khan kept the media in splits for over an hour while answering to the endless questions by the journo brigade. The badshah of bollywood faced the media's volley of questions with lan and effortless wit; as some called him a juggler while others called him a replacement for the Big B.

Well, we think life has now come full circle for Shah Rukh who's an entertainer to the core. To put it in his own words, "I believe I am a entertainer and my job is to make sure that people get entertained. So, here the medium doesn't matter, it could be the small screen or the big screen for that matter. Afterall, I started my career on television and went on to do films and now I am back on the small screen."

So how differently does the actor plan to anchor the show considering Big B made KBC a household name with his style?

"I'll be myself on the show and I see this as an opportunity to connect with viewers who have loved me so much. First and foremost, I think it will be very important for the contestants to feel comfortable on the show. Also, it's really not about winning for them but being on the show taking back memories is what counts. So, it could be a hug, a statement, or just the informal chat that we have on the show will probably be a memory. I am nervous, exited and thrilled to anchor a show which is very classy, intelligent and entertaining." chirps the energetic actor.

The show is being slotted in the every Monday to Thursday at 9 pm.

Elaborating further on the positioning of the show, Sameer Nair, CEO , Star Entertainment India says, " our weekend slots are already looking very strong with shows like Prithviraj Chauhan, Baa Bahu aur Baby and others. Right now, we need to look the 9 pm slot. As for now, Viraasat and Karam Apnaa Apnaa will go off air to make way for KBC. "

When queried further on the choice of the new anchor, Nair said," after the Big B if there's anyone else who could do the show, it is ShahRukh Khan. His wit charm, energy, style will definitely make the show worth watching."

KBC is being produced by Siddhartha Basu's Synergy Communications.
"We get to see a rejuvenated KBC this time but with the same magic. This time one would get to see the first production which will be a joint venture with Ad labs," smiles ace quizmaster Siddharth Basu who is basking in the glory of his Sony dance show Jhalak Dikhla Ja.

Sameer Nair, Star India COO adds "KBC is close to our heart right from the beginning and to Star Plus which the last time defined the weekend strategy. We will have all the 15 qualities and four life lines and the works."

Here's a peek at the question-answer session for the King Khan(with his sense of humour intact)

Tell us about the cold war between you and the Big B?

We are both professionals who've been working together for a long time now. I have learnt a lot from him and have tremendous respect for him. Its like Tom Cruise never tries to attack Brad Pitt and I've been having all colours of wars with my colleagues for so many years now.

Are you doing any homework for the show?

The channel people and the production house has been very kind to me. They have set up a training set up for me at home so that I can get myself acquainted with the show and don't have to travel all the way to the studio every day. So I would be joining school from today to not having any glitches.

Are you going to have the trademark o-oh which the Big B was famous for during the show?

We would be retaining the o-oh and maybe try Kkkk… On a serious note we work on the creative soon. And use good amount of Urdu as I have already done a few Hindi films and people know how good my Hindi is.

People call you a juggler as you have been trying different genres?

I think juggler is a good word though I prefer being called a Badshah. I've been a jack of all trades but master of none and have been juggling with many things in the scope of entertainment.

How long is your contract with the show and wont you get bored of hosting the show?

I've have a two years contract with KBC wherein I get to expose my personality. I am finishing work on a film called Chak De. But from January I get to work on KBC and Om Shanti till April. I enjoy my work so I never get tired of what I am doing.

What is your look going to be like?

I am going to wear clothes from Dhoom 2.

SRK practises for KBC

21 Dec, 2006
TimesofIndia

MUMBAI: When you have the rather large shoes of Amitabh Bachchan to fill it makes sense to do ample legwork. And that's exactly what ShahRukh Khan is doing these days.

For the last ten days the star who takes over from Bachchan as the host of the third edition of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) from January 22 has been hard at work getting his act right.

These gruelling sessions that last four to five hours a day have SRK's friends Karan Johar, Farah Khan, musicians Vishal and Shekhar among others playing contestants in the hot-seat.

Shah Rukh who has been swiftly clambering up Bachchan's trail, after Don and a series of brands that AB used to endorse, KBC will be the third follow-up act for him. Shah Rukh is not sparing any effort to ensure that his take on KBC is note-perfect. A huge simulacrum of the KBC set has been put up on the first floor of his house, Mannat.

"Except for the fog machine there's everything there," says music director Vishal who attended a session pretending to be one of the persons on the help line as Farah Khan sat on the hot-seat.

You can hear the signature tune, the dramatic hooters, and there are the signature high-backed chairs. But what's missing are the stock phrases that Bachchan made famous like lock kiya jaye and computerji.

SRK, says Siddharth Basu, the brain behind KBC, is evolving a rather different style. "He has in fact given the computer a new persona," says Vishal adding that Shah Rukh will introduce his own set of catch-phrases. "Shah Rukh readily reaches out to people. So if Bachchan was the Bhishma Pitamah, Shah Rukh is like Krishna Lala", gushes Basu.

"He is serious when it is required and playful at other times. He has a great sense of humour and is perhaps the only actor who is a natural anchor as well. He thinks on his feet."

In addition to his celebrity friends Shah Rukh has also started practising with lay contestants from different age groups.

This special arrangement at Mannat is to accommodate Khan's otherwise busy schedule.

Says a source, "Bachchan used to practise at a similar set-up at the Star office. He could devote much more time for preparation since in those days he had few assignments." And yes, the source adds, Bachchan's brand of professionalism was truly unique.

People will see me in their living rooms: SRK

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

KBC marks the return of ShahRukh Khan to television, the medium in which he began his acting career 17 years ago with Fauji. "It's like a homecoming to me," says Khan who prefers to be called the Badshah. More than the personality that anchors the show Khan feels that it's the show that has a bigger impact on the audience.

"What works is the show's simple format more than the person or celebrity that anchors KBC," feels the superstar who doesn't like to be compared with his predecessor on the show, Mr Bachchan. "I think it's not fair to him. I am his junior and have learnt a lot from him. I respect him as a person, actor and for all his achievements. But I have my own identity and I will bring my own personality to the show," he says.

Having returned from a hectic shooting schedule for the Yash Chopra flick Chak De in Australia, Khan says he is thankful to Star and Siddhartha Basu for setting up a small unit at his bungalow in Bandra where he will rehearse for the show to get over the technical glitches. Asked whether it's money that has attracted him to television, Khan says money is really secondary.

"I am happy doing the show because it will give me an opportunity to connect with the people who love me and watch my films. They will see me in their living rooms. That's the biggest high for me. Besides I will interact with common people who will come on the show as contestants. I want to give them my love and respect. But yes I have got a fair deal and Star has been gracious enough in giving me what I deserve."

Talking about the terminology like computerji or lock kiya jaye that Mr Bachchan was associated with on KBC, Khan says it too early to talk about it. "Maybe I will come up with my own terminology. But some old terms may remain," he adds. Speaking about anchoring, Khan says anchoring exposes a person completely. "You are yourself. You can't hide the real you like you do when you play a character in a film.

But I am game for it and I hope people will like me as a person in the same way they have liked me as an actor. He will start shooting for KBC from the first week of January 2007. Between January and April 2007 he will shoot for only KBC and Farah Khan's film Om Shanti Om. Now what fresh inputs SRK brings to the show remains to be seen

King Khan's lines are ringing

Amina Shaikh / Mumbai December 24, 2006

REALITY SHOW: More than a million Indians phone in to sit on the hot-seat of KBC III.

More than a million Indians called on Friday and Saturday to sit on the hot seat of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) III in front of film star Shah Rukh Khan.

The number of wannabe crorepatis for KBC III is 40 per cent more than the 7,00,000 on the first day of Amitabh Bachchan-hosted KBC II.

Star TV, which will kick off the show on Star Plus some time in January, opened the phone lines for participants for a day on Friday evening. Viren Popli, vice-president (interactive), Star India, confirmed that the number of callers had crossed a million.

This time, Start TV has tried to ensure that callers do not whine over jammed lines. "We've built capacity for peak calling so that we can handle up to 30,000 calls a minute," he said.

Star TV is expecting KBC III to restore its fortunes. To ensure nothing goes wrong with the show, it has increased its back-end support hoping to get more prospective participants to call.

During KBC II, Star TV's interactive department handled 1.2 million calls an hour. For KBC III, it has ramped up the capacity by a whopping 50 per cent. "We now have our systems in place to receive 1.8-1.9 million calls an hour," Popli said.

For KBC III, Star TV has also widened its audience through its telecom partners Bharti Airtel, MTNL and BSNL. "KBC III has 30 million Bharti Airtel subscribers and 80 million combined connections of BSNL and MTNL," he said.

BSNL officials said the platform created for KBC III was capable of attending 1,500 call attempts a second compared with 500 for KBC II.

Besides, fixed-line and mobile call rates have been cut considerably this time. "Both fixed-line and mobile calls will cost Rs 2.40 per pulse. It is a two-pulse call (as the question is long and takes time)," Popli said. Last year, the two-pulse call was priced at Rs 6 per pulse for mobile callers and Rs 2.50 for fixed-line users.

Thus, though there may be more traffic on the lines of these companies, the revenue from the show may still fall short from its earlier edition.

Mumbai, December 6: "I'm trying out various get-ups from Dhoom 2," Shah Rukh Khan jibes when we ask him what his look for Kaun Banega Crorepati will be like. The show returns in January with Khan as its new host.

"I'm looking at KBC as an opportunity to thank my audience. And what better way to do that than by giving them other people's money," he continues.

From his feelings about stepping into Amitabh Bachchan's shoes to the much-hyped cold war between the two mega stars, Khan has a tongue-in-cheek quip for it all. "Terms like 'Computerji'and 'Lock kiya jaye' came up through a combined effort between the creative heads and Mr Bachchan. I might just say 'KKK…Kiran," says the star who has just signed a two-year contract with the channel.

Like his predecessor, Khan is hoping to quiz a host of celebrities "from Sridevi to the young Amrita Rao." But he goes on to add that meeting common people comes first.

SRK may rule Lenovo out of KBC

RITWIK DONDE
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2006 02:02:19 AM>

MUMBAI: The Chinese are not happy with Shah Rukh Khan replacing the Big B on KBC show! Remember computerji in the popular Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) quiz show on Star? That was Lenovo, a Chinese company's computer, and its logo was displayed prominently on the computerji in each episode.

However for the next season of the popular game show with Shah Rukh Khan, the Chinese PC major may not provide advertising support to KBC as its new anchor Shah Rukh Khan is a brand ambassador for rival PC maker Compaq.

"Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) taking over from Amitabh Bachchan for the next season of KBC, the company is now evaluating its position on continuing its brand association with KBC," says Deepak Advani, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Lenovo Group.

Earlier ET had reported that Star has been successful in locking ten sponsors for the upcoming season of KBC. Interestingly, SRK endorses Airtel, Hyundai and Videocon which feature among the sponsor list.

Says Samir Nair, CEO, Star India, "Bringing on Shah Rukh on board for KBC has brought a lot of interest in KBC from the brand he endorses. And considering it's a fresh new season for KBC, there is a strong possibility that Compaq may come on board in place of Lenovo." Star is also in talks with other players as well in addition to Compaq and Lenovo for brand placement on computers in the show, he told ET.

Says Rahul Agarwal, general manager-marketing, Lenovo (South Asia), "We tend to avoid conflict of brand ambassadors when it comes to in-content promotion." The previous deal with the makers of KBC-2 was for 74 episodes spread over a span of 6 months, however, due to Mr Bachchan's illness the series could not be taken past 52 episodes and the deal was settled with Lenovo not paying for the balance episodes in the season. "It was a multi-crore deal, which entailed logo placement and advertising during the series," Mr Agarwal said.

An estimated 1.5 million households in India watched every episode of the KBC-2," he added, "thus helping us create huge brand awareness." As for the upcoming season for the quiz show is concerned, we are starting anew and thinking over a strategy of better brand promotion."

Product placement and sponsorship of KBC-2 proved to be a hugely successful vehicle to create basic brand awareness in the country," Mr Agarwal told ET. Lenovo currently has celebrity siblings and actors Saif and Soha Ali Khan to endorse its brand while SRK is committed to Compaq Presario.

Compaq refused to divulge the exact size of their deal with SRK, but it is believed that the actor charges anything between Rs 5-7 crore for a brand endorsement, which is close to Big B's charges.

The brand Compaq Presario was bought by HP in 2001. Says Shuchi Sarkar, head - marketing, Personal Systems Group-HP, "Earlier we have already had promotional deals with SRK starrers KANK and Don.

And KBC also seems be a valid choice since SRK's entry in the scene and we are considering being a part of the actor's newest avatar too." Compaq did in-movie promotion for Don and had the rights to use images and clips of KANK for its promotional purposes.

O&M which is Lenovo's advertising agency feels that if the company is very keen on the brand placement, they would have to look over the fact its SRK in the sea in front of the brand name. Says Amit Akali, Creative Director, O&M, "It is now upto Compaq to allow any other brand to go along with its brand ambassador. Were it Saif in place of SRK then as their agency we would take every precaution that such a coup would not happen."

Karan Johar to design SRKs crorepati look

Bharti Dubey
[ 23 Dec, 2006 0018hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK >

MUMBAI: While Shah Rukh Khan is preparing hard at his office to don the new role of a quizmaster in Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), his buddy Karan Johar is busy designing the look the superstar will have on the show.

It's not for the first time that Johar will be styling SRK's look; he has styled the superstars appearance in his films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Veer Zaara, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

When contacted Johar said, "What is new in it? I have been designing his clothes and look for almost all his films. Besides, Shah Rukh Khan is one person who will look good in casuals as well as in formals. He can carry off almost anything."

The set for Kaun Banega Crorepati will be designed by Nitin Desai. Says a source in Star, "He has done it earlier. We have just dismantled the Nach Baliye set. It will take them at least a week or two to construct the KBC set".

Shah Rukh Khan will be shooting simultaneously for his home production Om Shanti Om and Kaun Banega Crorepati. Since both the sets are in Film City, the actor will be shooting for his film during the day and for KBC in the evenings. He will be shooting for 18 to 20 hours a day, an insider said.

Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in by Star for two seasons of 52 episodes. Shah Rukh Khans KBC will definitely bring in a new set of audiences, an insider said.

Shah Rukh Khan was approached by Star after Amitabh Bachchan declined an offer to host the show in its third season. Khan came to be seen as the only alternative after Amitabh Bachchan. The choice of Khan immediately generated interest and zing in the media world and the ad world.
