They shopped excitedly until the centre closed, and they had bought a variety of newborn clothes, including a baby pink star-patterned sleepsuit and a pair of stripy blue dungarees with a matching T-shirt.

"Acchha, Kasturi, mujhe saaman dedo."

"Robbie, tum sab kaise pakadhonge?"

"Nahi, Kasturi, mein sab karoonga. Tum sirf aaram karo. Humne bahut saare shopping kiya hain. Tum thak gayee hogi."

"Robbie, tum bhi na, b.." She broke off as it began to pour with rain.

"Kasturi! Jaldi chalo, baarish horahi hain."

"Nahi, Robbie, baarish mein naachne ka mazaa hi kuch aur hain. Chalo, chalo!"

"Kasturi, tum sachmuch paagal ho."

"Woh toh main hoon. Chalo na, Robbie," she called, splashing in the rain, spinning in circles and screaming in delight. Seeing her look of pleasure, Robbie abandoned trying to be sensible, and ran to join her, bags swinging in his hands. Watching her now, he remembered the first time he had seen her, that night in the rain which had changed him, and his life forever. They remained in the rain until their clothes were soaked through and they were breathless from jumping and dancing. Robbie quickly hailed a rickshaw and they quickly got in.

"Acchha, Kasturi, aaram se," advised Robbie, carefully helping her downstairs. He sat her down gently on the sofa, then went outside to see Milind's new car.

"Hi Kasturi, kaisi ho?"

"Theek hoon, Prachi. Bas thoda sa dard ho raha tha, aaj subaah. Tum?"

"Acchha, delivery ke time near hain, shayad isliye. Main theek hoon. Yeh Milind bhi na, bilkool bacchha jaise hain. Kal Mercedes khareed liya. Tab se lekar abhi tak sabko dikhaane mein laga rahe hain."

"Robbie bilkool waisa hi hain."

"Wahi toh! Mujhe bata hain, woh dono aada gehnte aaram se guzarlehnge, Mercedes ko dekh dekh kar. 'Engine ka speed 70 miles per hour hain. Is mein cruise control bhi hain,' " she mimicked. "Mein toh bored hojaati hoon."

"Koi baat nahi. Mere saath baitho. Bata hain, humne kal bahut saare shopping kiya tha."

"Acchha! Kya khareeda?"

"Ek nana sa sleeps-." She broke off suddenly, clutching her stomach.

"Prachi, me-" Prachi was at her side in an instant, squeezing her hand. Devika hurried to call Robbie.

"Aaaaagh," screamed Kasturi.

Robbie rushed in, his face creased with concern. He went to Kasturi's other side, and gently stroked her face to calm her. Milind phoned for an ambulance.

"Robbie! Dard ho raha hain!" She squeezed his hand even tighter.

"OK, Kasturi, its OK, bas meri taraf dekho, meri baat suno. Sab theek hojaayenga. Ambulance aarahi hain," gabbled Robbie, trying to keep calm and console her.

"Robbie!"

"It's OK, Robbie yaar, tension mat lehna. Mujhe bata hain, jab Prachi ki delivery hui thi, toh mein bahut zyaada parayshaan hogaya tha. But I'm sure, sab bilkool theek hoga. Zara socho, tum kuch hi pal mein papa honge."

"Haan Milind. Mein bas umeed karta hoon ke Kasturi theek hogi. Mom kahaan hain?"

"Woh Prachi aur waaki sab ke saath waiting room mein hain. Kuch piyo."

"Nahi, Milind, peene ka mood nahi hain."

"Uff Robbie, mein sharab ke baare mein baat nahi kar raha hoon."

"Bata hain..oh, tum mazaak kar rahe the?" realised Robbie.

"Jee haan. Mujhe bata hain tum ab nahi peete. Mein sirf tumhaare shakal pe chintak mitaane ki koshish kar raha tha. Tumhe suit nahi karta. Oh..dekho, sab aagaye. Aur doctor bhi humhe bula raha hain. Chalo."
