Chapter 5: The Battle of Control
Rishabh reached home very late and went straight to his room. He was in no mood to speak to anyone. It was 10 pm and he just wanted to get this day over with. He went to the washroom and freshened up. His stomach growled as he sat in bed. "Forget it." he said out loud. "I don't want to eat." There was a knock on his door. He straightened himself. "Yes." he said sternly.
Prerna opened the door and walked right in.
"Mr. Bajaj, aaj itna late kese ho gaya?" she asked.
"Kaam tha." he said looking into his phone.
"Chaliye main khana laga deti hoon."
"I've eaten." he lied.
"Par main aapka wait kar rahi thi." Prerna stated.
"Nahi karna chahiye tha." He said coldly.
Rishabh still looked at his phone. He just didn't want to look at her. It would only remind him that he was living a lie. She had never given him the rights of a husband. She had never let him come close. He tried to push away all these thoughts. They made him weak.
Prerna narrowed her eyes. Why was he being so rude? She wanted to leave but for some reason she couldn't. She looked at him again. "Mr. Bajaj, aap thik ho?" she asked.
"Ofcourse!" he said looking at her.
"Sneha aapke baare mein puch rahi thi. Par woh so gayi ab. Kal school bhi jana hai toh--"Its okay." he said casually. Prerna wondered what was wrong with him.
"Aapko kya hua?" she asked moving towards him.
"Absolutely nothing." He said standing up. Why is she showing fake concern? He asked himself.
"Then why are you being so.. so rude?"
"That's who I am, ab aapke liye sab kuch toh change nahi kar sakta." he taunted.
"Maine aapse kab kaha ki aap apne aap ko change karo?" She asked. "Bina matlab ke aap ku attitude dikha rahe hai?"
"Excuse me?" He asked widening his eyes. No one spoke to him like this. He knew very well how to inculcate fear in everyone.
Prerna gulped. "Aap ko ho kya gaya hai?" she asked innocently.
"Aapko kya farak padta hai?" Rishabh asked a little rudely.
"Acha," Prerna said irritated, "Ofcourse, you're right. Mujhe kya farak padta hai. Main hi pagal hu jo aapke saath dinner karne ke liye wait kar rahi thi."
"Koi zarwat nahi. hai, aapko pehle hi khaa lena chahiye tha." Rishabh informed, still cold as ice.
"You're impossible Mr. Bajaj!" She said frustrated with his attitude. Some days he was so sweet and some days he became so rude. What was his problem? Prerna grumbled to herself. She turned around and stomped out.
Mr. Bajaj's stomach growled again. He sighed and sat down. He covered his face in his hands. What was happening to him? Why was he torturing himself?
He removed his hands to find Kukki standing in front of him. "Prerna ne bheja tumhe?" he asked frowning.
"No dad, main bahar khade hoke aap dono ki baat sunn rahi thi." She said. "Kya hua aapko?"
Rishabh sighed. "Kaha na kuch nahi!" he said.
"Suna maine, par ab sach bataiye." she said sitting down near him. "You told me you'll try."
Rishabh had had a very long day. He didn't want to argue. "Kukki, I'm tired." he said.
"Then relax." She said casually, "Aapko har waqt dusro ke liye kuch karne ki zarwat nahi hai." she added.
Rishabh nodded. He kissed Kukki on the forehead. She was his family. His true family. She was the only one he could bank on. Who would never leave him, no matter what.
"Dad, ek question puchu?" she asked. Rishabh nodded.
"Aapko burra nahi lagta, ki Prerna aapse pyar nahi karti?" She looked at his face trying to read his expressions.
She had struck the nerve that was hurting Rishabh all day, or actually all these years. He looked at his daughter, her question was simple, but his answer wasn't. He shook his head.
"Dad aap uski itni care karte ho. Dekha hai maine. London mein bhi aap uske room ke bahar khade rehte the jab tak woh so na jaye. Jab woh late tak kaam karti thi aap bhi so nahi paate the. Jab woh der tak ghar se bahar rehti thi, aap uska wait karte the--"Kukki, get to the point." Rishabh stopped his daughter. He did not want to hear all this, not today. He had been stupid, thinking that one day he would matter to Prerna. One day she would see him as her husband and acknowledge him with love. He was so stupid, he thought.
"Dad you love her, right?" Kukki asked. She just wanted confirmation.
Rishabh looked at Kukki. He knew he couldn't lie to her. He nodded.
"Toh usse bata ku nahi dete?" She asked. "She doesn't know how lucky she is!"
Rishabh smirked. "Kukki itna easy nahi hai. She would never accept me. She has always loved someone else."
"Who is he? Kya hua unke beech?" She asked. "Kya Sneha Prerna aur uss aadmi ki beti hai?"
Rishabh's jaw clenched. "Anurag Basu." He said with loathe lined in his words.
"Oh!" Kukki said recollecting his name. She knew he was Kaushik's uncle but she decided not to mention it. She remembered the party, now she understood more. She knew those people when she was a child, she had some smudged memories of them. She was very curious about what happened.
"Does he love Prerna too?" Kukki asked.
"Pata nahi." Rishabh answered. And he didn't care. He knew his wife's heart still only had Anurag. She only thought about him all day. And he, he is no one.
Kukki knew that if she pushed Rishabh too much for the story he would not like it. She had to be careful how much to say. She had finally got her dad back and she didn't want him to distance himself again.
"Aapko sachme kabhi burra nahi lagta?" She asked one last time. She wished her dad would just be human and say yes. She wished he would confide in her.
Rishabh looked at his daughter. She had really grown up. "Lagta hai." he said honestly. "Par mein kuch nahi kar sakta. Bohot saal pehle maine ummeed chod di thi ki woh bhi mujhse pyar kare. Main usse Anurag ke paas chod aaya tha." He said remembering old events.
"But fate brought her back. Unhe mujhe aur torture jo karna tha." He said pointing to God. He sighed getting up from the bed. He had said too much. He had let his guard down.
Kukki got up too. She could feel her dad hurting but she didn't know how to help him. She just hugged Rishabh tightly. He hugged her too. "I love you dad!" she said lovingly.
"I love you too," he said with a small smile. He felt good, finally.
Kukki left Rishabh's room thinking about him. He had always looked out for Prerna and she was so clueless about his love. Did she really have no feelings for him? Kukki had to find out how Prerna felt. She wanted to see Rishabh happy. She would do anything for him.
She saw Prerna sitting the dining table by herself, talking out loud.
Prerna looked at the rotis she just made. "Samajhte kya hai apne aap ko!" she exclaimed. She didn't feel like eating any more. She had waited for him and he didn't care about it. "Mujhe itna farak ku padh raha hai. Unki marzi. Unki life hai." She tried to console herself. She looked at her food for a minute and then pushed it away. "Chodo, I'm going to sleep." she said getting up. Kukki giggled behind her.
Prerna narrowed her eyes and looked at her daughter. "Kya hua?" she asked.
"Aap aur dad dono bache ho." she giggled.
"Mujhe nahi, unse jaake kaho yeh sab! Itne der unka wait kiya and itne rudely unhone kaha ki I should have just eaten. Ese," she said clicking her fingers together, "Ese mood change ho gaya unka. Subah toh itne khush the. Pata nahi--" And she stopped. She recalled how he walked out after Anurag left. Was he worried about that?
"Prerna," Kukki said shaking her, "Tum toh dad ko jaanti ho. Jo dil mein hota hai kabhi nahi kahenge. Sirf gussa dikhana aata hai, pyaar nahi." Kukki said lost in thoughts of what Rishabh just shared with her.
Prerna nodded. "Mr. Bajaj ke dimag mein kya chalta hai, samajh hi nahi aata." she complained.
"Dad ne dinner nahi kiya." she stated, "Maine unhe kehte hue suna ki he is hungry. And, honestly, mujhe bhi pehle samajh nahi aata tha ki woh kya sochte hai, par ab lagta hai ki itna clear tha hamesha se, ki woh kya chahte hai." Kukki said walking off. She hoped that Prerna would be smart enough to understand her cue. She hoped she would be able to see Rishabh happy.
Prerna had more questions for Kukki. But she asked herself instead.
"Dinner nahi kiya? Toh mujhse jhooth ku bola? Unke dimag mein esa kya chal raha hai?"
She grumpily set a tray of food and took it to his room. She needed answers and she would not rest until she got them. Mr. Bajaj was driving her mad.
She knocked on the door but didn't wait for a response this time and entered. He was such a big kid. Kukki was right. Mr. Bajaj sat on his bed lighting a cigar.
"I thought aapne yeh sab chod diya tha?" She said walking to his bed with a tray of food.
"Aur mujhe laga maine aapko bola tha ki I've already eaten." He replied.
Prerna exhaled loudly. She kept the tray in front of him and sat down. "Kya kar rahi hai aap?" Mr. Bajaj asked as she made a bite and held it in front of his mouth.
"Mujhe nahi pata aap kis baat se gussa hai but khaane pe mat nikaliye gussa." She said.
Rishabh was once again lost in those innocent big doe eyes. Inhe fikar hai meri? Almost immediately after he thought this he stopped his thoughts. No, not again. No more lies. No more delusions.
"Mujhe nahi khana." He said looking away.
Prerna couldn't understand why Mr. Bajaj was behaving like a child today. He was always so in control of his emotions and today he was acting out like a small baby.
"Thik hai," she said keeping the bite down, "Main bhi nahi khaungi." She was not giving up.
"Why are you doing this drama?" he asked.
"Drama?" Prerna's jaw dropped. "Main kar rahi hu drama? Itna bada bacha maine aaj tak nahi dekha!" She scolded Mr. Bajaj.
"Dimag kharab ho gaya hai aapka aur ab aap mera dimag kharab kar rahi hai." Rishabh said a little more sternly hoping she would leave him alone.
Prerna looked at him in disbelief. She was so mad at him. "Karungi aapka dimag kharab!" She said gloatingly. "Ab muh kholiye." she said lifting that piece of food again.
"Main. Nahi. Khaunga." He said through his gritted teeth. Prerna was really making him angry. He didn't want to talk to her now.
Kukki stood outside and giggled to herself. She had her ears glued to the door. She sighed and told herself - Prerna ke dil mein bhi kuch toh hai.
Prerna didn't know what to say to make him listen to her. He was being so stubborn. She took the cigar from his hand. "Muh kholiye warna-- warna main bhi aaj se fookna shuru kar dungi." She said out of impulse. She really didn't know what she was saying now. Mr. Bajaj was really driving her crazy.
Rishabh smirked. "Aap, aur cigar?" he said folding his arms on his chest. "Sure, go ahead." he said.
Prerna never backed down from a challenge and Mr. Bajaj has just challenged her with that tone of his. She tried to take a puff but ended up coughing.
Rishabh laughed looking at her. All his anger and insecurity had just vanished as he looked at his cute wife. Prerna made a horrible face and returned the cigar to him. She looked helpless now.
"Please khaa lijiye na." She requested tiredly. She didn't want to fight with him anymore. She needed her pillar of support, not this kid.
Rishabh gave up too. He opened his mouth waiting for her to feed him. Prerna's eyes lit up. She quickly fed him before he could change his mind. That one bite had so much care in it that it reached his heart and healed him. He wasn't hurting anymore. His heart fluttered as he tried to control it again.
Prerna pushed the tray towards him for him to eat. He made a bite and held it up in front of her mouth with hope in his eyes. "Mr.Bajaj?" Prerna mumbled.
"Aapko bhi bhuk lagi hogi," he said softly. Prerna was touched. Why does he care so much? How is he always there when I need him? Aaj main itni pareshaan thi subah par jab Mr.Bajaj ne kaha ki sab thik hai toh meri tension gayab kese ho gayi? She thought. She opened her mouth too. He fed her with a small smile.
Both Rishabh and Prerna ate from the same plate. Rishabh felt warm again, like someone had put a blanket on him on a cold night. Prerna on the other hand felt love. She was quite dazed as she wondered how she was feeling. She didn't understand the gush of emotions inside her. Why do I feel so peaceful suddenly? Seeing him eat his food is making me happy. It's so strange. Why did I fight with him so much to make him eat his food? I thought I had shut all doors to my heart, sealed all my care and love. No one deserved it. I thought my heart was incapable of beating so loudly. Then how am I feeling this way right now? How am I feeling so peaceful near Mr.Bajaj?
Mr. Bajaj on the other hand couldn't believe it was so easy to melt him. Have I lost my ability to push people away? First, Kukki so easily made me confide in her. I never tell people about my feelings but today I told her that I love Prerna so easily? And now Prerna made me eat so easily? After I was so rude to her she fought with me to make me eat? Am I becoming that weak that I am succumbing to mere emotions? I need to train my heart again. I need to train my heart to listen to my brain again. Nahi sununga apne dil ki. Mera dil sirf dard dena jaanta hai. He said straightening his face again. He would not go down his delusion again. His relation with Prerna was only in name and he needed to accept that. He can't be carried away by these small moments. He needs to focus on his work and his life. He made himself understand.
Prerna looked at him intently. "Mr. Bajaj," she said making him look into her eyes too. "Aapko hamesha strong rehne ki zarwat nahi hai," she said exactly the opposite of what his mind was telling his heart. "Aap mujhse apni tension share kar sakte hai. You've always been there for me and now it's my turn. Main aapke saath hu." She said placing her hand on his, making his heart flutter out of his brain's control again. Rishabh didn't understand why she was saying all these things. What did she mean by she is with him? He was trying so hard to control his heart but her words were not letting his mind take control. He fought hard to remember the truth. This relation was a lie he repeated to himself. But she didn't stop messing with his brain.
"Aapne aaj jese hi kaha ki sab thik ho jayega, meri saari tension khatam ho gayi. I really trust you, Mr. Bajaj. Mujhe laga tha main kisi pe kabhi bharosa nahi kar paungi, but aap ne mera bharosa aap par se kabhi tutne hi nahi diya. Aapne hamesha wahi kiya jo aapne promise kiya. And aaj uss hi tarah I want ki aap merepe bharosa kare." She said honestly, "I will not let you down." she added.
Mr. Bajaj nodded, "I trust you, Prerna. I always have." he said mechanically. He didn't want to hear all this now. HE was trying to accept this truth he had uncovered.
"Toh fir ku nahi kaha mujhse ki Anurag ki baato se aapko itna farak pada?" She asked taking a guess. She figured it must have been that.
Rishabh looked surprised. "Aapko kese pata?"
She smiled. "Bas, aapki wife hu, sab pata laga leti hu."
Rishabh couldn't believe this. She refered to him as his wife. Her words were contradicting his thoughts. He was thinking that his marriage was a hoax and it was just a name & here Prerna was saying the opposite. Mr. Bajaj didn't know what to believe anymore. He didn't like that he felt so confused. He had always been so clear in his brain. Why had he all of a sudden lost his clarity?
"Aur ek aur baat," she said holding his hand again. "Anurag Basu ke kuch bhi kehne se sach nahi badlega." she said strongly.
"Sach?" Mr. Bajaj smirked. "Sach toh yehi hai na Prerna ki aaj bhi aapke dil mein Anurag hi hai. Sach toh yeh hai ki main chahe jo sochu, Sneha Anurag ki beti hai. Toh fir kese uske kehne se farak nahi padega?" He blurted. He had had enough of her non sense.
Prerna was taken aback with his harsh words. "Mr. Bajaj?" she gasped. "Mere dil mein Anurag ke liye ab koi jagah nahi hai." She said sternly looking away.
"Jhooth." Rishabh said clearly. He was trying to figure out the truth himself. "Nafrat ek bohot strong emotion hai Prerna, aur aapke dil mein Anurag ke liye itni nafrat hai ki aur kisi ke liye jagah hi nahi." he stated. As he spoke those words he felt his heart sink. He knew it was true.
Prerna was left speechless. She stared at Mr. Bajaj in disbelief. What was he saying? Why was he doing this to her?
"Sach jaanna hai aapko? Toh suniye. Aapne 8 saal se jo bhi kiya kiske liye kiya? Anurag ke liye. Chahe woh usse tabah karne ke liye ku na ho, par hai toh uske liye. Aap khudko meri wife kehti hai but aapka dil hamesha sirf ek insaan ke liye dhadka hai aur woh hai - Anurag. Toh please, mujhe yeh jhoothi tassali mat dijiye ki aap mere saath hai." He said looking at her. All that pain was flowing out of his system in harsh true words. He couldn't take this lie any more. He couldn't live this way anymore. He was hating the situation suddenly. He felt suffocated in this fake marriage which was just for her convenience. Everything was so clear to him now. Prerna was selfish. Just listening to her empty words made him furious. Tears filled in Prerna's eyes. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Tears started pouring from her eyes as she looked at her husband. But Mr. Bajaj wasn't done yet. He wasn't saying all this to hurt Prerna. He was saying all this to convince himself. He wanted to tell himself the truth. In this moment, everything was clear to him. "Aap apna revenge lene mein itni busy ho gayi ki sach, sach toh aapko dikha hi nahi. Aap revenge Sneha ki maut ka lena chahti thi na? Toh ab ku kar rahi hai yeh sab?" He questioned. "Kya sirf apni beti se dur hone ka gussa hai aapko ya fir iss baat ka ki Anurag ne aapko reject kiya and Komolika ko chuna. Usne aapke pyaar ko nazarandaz kar diya. Kahi aapka revenge isliye toh nahi?" He accused.
Prerna's eyes widened. Did Rishabh really think that? She wondered. She had no words. She just listened, asking herself all those questions Rishabh threw at her. Could they be true?
"Aur inn sab mein aapne ek baar bhi yeh nahi socha ki Mr. Bajaj aapki help ku kar rahe hai?" He said standing up and moving away. He had to hide the tears brimming in his eyes.
"Jawab dijiye Prerna, ku kar raha hu main aapki help? Kya lagta hai aapko?" He roared.
She stood up behind him. She wanted to know. She had genuinely never given this a thought. She always just thought of Mr. Bajaj as her angel who was helping her out. But why?
"Dekha, firse koi jawab nahi. Arre mere baare toh aapne kabhi socha hi nahi." He smirked. "Kese sochti? Aapke dimag mein har second Anurag hai. Aapke dil ke har kone mein Anurag hai." He hissed. "And yeh hai sach, jisse koi nahi badal sakta." he said turning around to look at his wife. Tears streamed down her cheeks.
Prerna turned around and walked out of his room. She had nothing to say. Rishabh's harsh words had pierced her heart. She didn't understand why he said all this? Was it just to hurt her. She opened the door to see Kukki standing there, tears flowing down her cheeks. Prerna wiped Kukki's tears and shook her head. She wanted to console her daughter but wasn't in the state of mind to do that. She broke into a run and left.
Mr. Bajaj was furious at himself. His heart pained to say all that out loud but now that he had said it his mind was back in control. He had injured his heart to give his mind control again. Now his heart wouldn't dare to disobey his brain again. It was a lesson for his heart. He had punished himself for all the lies his heart had believed. Prerna wasn't his not today, not ever.

Writer's Note: This is the turning point of this story. "Winds of Change" are about to flow which were born out of this night of truth. Truth has many sides and this is the one Rishabh chose to believe, for his own sanity. Rishabh Bajaj needed to hear this to believe it. Please don't think that he is cruel. He just needs to be in control. He needed this for himself. I hope you will like the direction of the wind now. Bad-ass Mr. Bajaj is back.
