Chapter 2

Prerna bid her daughter goodbye as she left for school and saw Maasi serving breakfast to Mr Bajaj. A small smile crept on her lips as she saw the mother-son duo chatting and she knew better than to disturb them. Leaving them be, she went to her bedroom to make the bed and clean the room. Lately, she and Mr Bajaj had started to sleep on the same bed and Prerna didn't say, but his presence near her all night comforted her to no end.

She remembered the first night when he had taken her in his arms on this same bed, when she had been insulted and accused by Anurag of cheating him and getting pregnant with Mr Bajaj's illegitimate child. He concluded this as the reason of their shotgun marriage and her character assassination by the man she loved was the last straw for Prerna. In a fit of rage and heartbreak, she had told Anurag that whatever he thought was actually true and the baby she carried was indeed Mr Bajaj's. The slap she'd received as a response answered all her unanswered questions. She had been utterly blind in love.

That was three months ago and she still, sometimes, cried at nights but her husband was always within reach. He would silently turn towards her and move a few inches closer, telling her I am here, you can count on me and she would scoot over him and cry herself to sleep on his chest as he patted her back and uttered soothing words in her hair, sometimes even talking to her baby, which made her smile in her sleep.

Her days were spent taking care of both her kids and nights were spent in her husband's reassuring arms. It was all she needed to survive. His presence had an innate feel to it, like, it was always meant to be. Prerna found herself calling for him at odd times, thinking about whether he ate or not, whether he was getting enough sleep or even that if his meetings were too long for his health. She had to know where he was at all times, if she didn't, it itched her mind the whole time.

Today was one of those days when he left without meeting her due to an important meeting out of town. Although he had informed her about it last night, she still felt a tad leftout as she saw his car drive away and she felt the itch. It made her uncomfortable and she wanted to just call him back but knew she could not. She waited for him to call once he reached and the next three hours were hell for her. She did text him twice but with no response. Maasi had left for a doctor's appointment and Prerna could only roam around the mansion twice before a dreadful feeling made home in her stomach. Unable to control herself, she called her husband who picked up immediately.

"Wow Mrs Bajaj." He chuckled and she sighed in relief. "Aap toh antaryami nikli!"

"What?" She frowned at his words.

"David ne break lagaya nahi ki aapka call aa gaya. I just reached." She could hear him smile.

"Apna khayal rakhiyega please." She said and heard him gasp dramatically.

"Aapko kabse meri itni fikar hone lagi?" He asked and she frowned.

"Mujhe har waqt aapki fikar rehti hai, jaise aapko meri." She said and he sighed.

"Okay, I will take care of myself. As a matter of fact, I am going to take a nap as soon as I-

A loud, explosion like sound reverberated in her ears the next moment before he could finish his sentence and she felt her blood freeze and body go numb. She heard a loud thump and she heard David, the driver's, shouting voice.

"Sir! Sir! Help, inhe goli lagi hai!" She heard David scream and her knees buckled, unable to hold her body. "Pakdo, uss aadmi ko, bhaag raha hai!"

The phone went dead the next second and she could not move.

What just happened?

Did she just...hear her husband get...shot?

Her husband got shot?

Her husband got shot!

As soon as her mind registered the horrible information, her body seemed to fill with an adrenaline like never before. In less than three minutes, she was in the car, going to him.

"I am coming Rishabh." She promised him.

The three hour drive was the most painful journey Prerna had ever been on, and to say this when her own life was a journey of obstacles was no less. She kept praying to her God and her Baba to keep her husband safe and sound, to keep Kukki's father fit and fine, to keep Maasi's son alive and healthy and to keep her...love with her always.

"Main unhe nahin kho sakti Baba!" She cried to herself, begging her father. "Please, please unhe mere paas wapas bhej dijiye! Main unke begair nahi jeena chahti! Please Baba, main aapki...aapki strong beti hoon na? Aapko pata hai, Rishabh ne aapki beti aur strong banaya hai! Agar wo mujhe chodkar chale gaye toh...toh main tut jaungi, bikhar jaungi, kabhi khudko samet nahin paungi! Baba, please, wo mera future hain! Agar mera future mujhse chhin gaya toh main...main kiske bharose jiyungi? Ek baar apna pyaar kho chuki hoon, dobara nahi kho sakti! Please, please, give him back to me! Gannu ji, aapse aaj ke baad kuch nahin mangungi, I promise, bas mujhe mera pyaar lauta dijiye!"

In her cries and worry, she didn't realize that Maasi had followed her after seeing her run like a maniac.

"Mrs Bajaj, aap tension mat lijiye, your husband is stable. We recovered a bullet from his shoulder and nothing major happened. He'll be in a cast for two months and will make a full recovery soon after." The doctor's words were, just words for her until she saw him herself, breathing and fine.

"Dr Sippy, can I...ek baar main-

"Nahin Mrs Bajaj, I am sorry. You can't meet him right now." He said and motioned at a police officer standing nearby. "They want to talk to you."

"Madam." The constable looked at the rich man's wife who appeared shaken to the core. "Please baith jaiye."

"Hmm." She sat down and the Inspector walked in with a file.

"Mrs Prerna Bajaj, we've caught the man who shot-

"I hope he's rotting in jail." She growled and the Inspector nodded.

"Yes he is in custody right now and we have his confession. Can you-

"What confession?" She frowned and the Inspector gave her the file.

"He says he was hired to kill your-

"By whom?" She didn't let him finish that awful statement.

"By a man called Anurag Basu."

Basu slapped Prerna, Basu😡. He doesn't deserve her love, her sacrifice. I am happy that she is moving on in her life. Taking help from professional and emotional support from Bajaj, she is fine now, happy with her daughter and husband. She has come a long way forgetting her past.

Bajaj is attacked😭. Prerna praying for him, it's emotional😭. Maasi would also witness Prerna's feelings for Bajaj now👍🏼. Basu🤢😡🤬, I want Prerna to slap and kick him and make sure he suffers for trying to kill her husband.
