Chapter 6:

"Me and you!? Don't even dream of it. If anyone has the right, is it only Anurag. I will just be a dream for you. Get that straight."

What was he doing so wrong if he was giving her the chance to have Anurag back? Should he have asked her first before speaking to her mom? But he told his mom not to influence her either way, didn't he? He asked Prerna to decide. And still she had to blow his head off.

Manager: Sir, sir!

Bajaj got out of his reverie: Yes!?

Manager: It's near 8 pm, sir. Shouldn't you be heading home?

Bajaj: Uh...yes, can you send the company car for me? (Sheepishly) I didn't bring by own today.

Manager: Of course. The same one that picked you up is okay?

Bajaj nodded. Frankly, he was putting off heading home, unsure of his welcome.

Bajaj entered Bajaj Court cautiously, worried something was going to be flung in his direction anytime now.

He looked around the drawing room and saw Tanvi watching TV. She told him Maasi had retired for the evening. She tried to fix him dinner, but he turned down the offer.

He went up to his bedroom. It was locked. He knocked and waited. He could hear Prerna's voice inside talking on the phone, softly mumbled. He knocked once more. She stopped speaking for a heartbeat and then continued on the phone. He knocked again, slowly.

Bajaj: Prerna...(he tried politely, not to alert the whole house).

A text popped up in his cell: Go away!

Rishab resigned and walked into his second floor library.

Prerna to her mom: He didn't even ask me! At least he asked me last time. This time he went straight to you.

Veena: That's not quite how it happened. He said the choice was yours. I think he didn't want me to be surprised again.

Prerna: I thought you hated him!

Veena: I thought I did too, but he comes across like a very sensible young man. Prerna, I am not going to influence you. I know you love Anurag and were meant to be with him and you never asked for Kukki's responsibility...it is a lot of handle. Now you are married, you went on your sacrificing way again for Anurag's sake. That was a decision you made whether you wanted to or not. Mr. Bajaj is letting you off the hook...that is...if you want it.

Prerna: Anurag still matters, Ma. Of course. He has had that place in my heart for so long. (She paused) How could he leave such a hard decision on me now when he never gave me a choice in the first place?

Veena could hear the conflict in Prerna's voice.

Veena: Parents can do anything for their children. I can see what Rishab meant about not having a choice himself once he knew you were the only solution. You will understand one day when you are a parent (Prerna's heart skipped a beat). He is powerful so his way may have been more drastic and held more weight. But even a poor mother like me, I don't think I could be above trying any extreme measure if it meant your life was at stake beta. I think he is trying to make it right, Prerna, and while society may judge you, I will support you if you want to come out of this marriage. Rishab even requested that I support you, that shows some thoughtfulness.

Prerna sadly: I think he just got bored of me.

Veena was quiet for a bit: I don't think that's true.

Prerna: He's just so damn selfish! He just doesn't want the marriage as soon as Kukki is off to school cause I serve no purpose for him now. The grand businessman is all about efficiency. That's his problem.

Veena: I think you are misunderstanding him. You are far off the mark when it comes to his regard for you. Give it some thought, sleep on it, and I will come by the day after tomorrow to see if you two are any closer to a decision about the next steps.

Prerna: Why can't you just tell me what I should do!?

Veena: Isn't that what you are mad at Rishab about? No Prerna, this is your life. You decided to marry thinking that was the best move for Anurag and you have experienced this marriage and gotten to know the Bajaj family as well. You must decide what is best for your life. I think Rishab is right, I cannot ask you to stay in this marriage fearing society's comments, you should do what makes you happy. It's not like you have any actual relationship right now, so I will not ask you to compromise. Basu family may not come around but Anu still cares for you. But that child Kukki, she matters, and you should consider her. I know Rishab said I shouldn't hold you back, but that poor child is caught in all this and we cannot overlook that.

Prerna: I honestly don't want to deal with either of them right now. Anurag's zeal has really showed me side of him I did not know existed. And Mr. Bajaj...I honestly don't know WHAT his problem is except that he thinks he knows ALL the answers.

Veena: If you want to be alone now, it is also a choice. I think he has fended for himself too long, he doesn't know how to not be a decision-maker.

Prerna paused to think: But that's just in business, na?

Veena: I don't know how much he has told you, but he has been the only breadwinner in his family since he was 12. That is not easy for any child.

Preena: How is that possible!? That's practically child labor!

Veena: Maybe you should ask him.

Prerna hung up on her mom more confused, but somewhat appeased and at peace with reuniting with her mom again. Around midnight she finally stopped seething long enough to wonder where he went off to...and went looking for him.

After searching what felt like every room in the house and god, were there enough rooms, she found him in the smaller library. Fast asleep in the leather lounge chair. He was still in his suit. That made her feel bad. He clearly worked hard and if he was really working since 12, she was putting him through a lot leaving him to sleep in couches around his house when he could afford beds. This was all his after all. Why didn't he say anything about it? Just go use another room, he had enough didn't he?

Cause he's too polite to make a fuss about it and draw attention to their marital problems, said a small voice in her head.

Prerna took off the shawl and tucked him in. He looked so peaceful in his sleep. She self-consciously brushed her fingers through his hair. What he doesn't find out won't hurt him. She looked closer, wow he really had a lot of white hair. They looked more silver than white, but there it was...working since 12 hmm, that could do that to you.

Prerna softly: Stress.

Rishab sleepily: It's not stress, it's genetics.

Prerna startled and jumped back, lost her balance and dropped back on his legs on the couch.

Rishab: Ow!

Prerna got up: Sorry sorry sorry!

She got off him.

Rishab sat up, rubbing them: It's okay, my feet were just asleep.

Prerna: I didn't mean to touch you. I just...got curious.

Rishab: Must be my lucky day. (He paused, remembering where they were in their fight). Anyways, I can sleep here, I will be fine.

Prerna: No please, come back to the bedroom.

Rishab in his insufferable sincerity said: Actually, this couch is more comfortable than the decorative one in the bedroom.

Prerna blurted out before she could think: You can have the other half of the bed. It's more than big enough for three people and we are just two.

Rishab smiled: We would still be three. (He got moody again and said softly to himself) Not for long, I guess..

Prerna blushed: Yes, well. It's not unsafe for the baby. And you rarely move at night, we can put a barrier in the middle if you are concerned.

Rishab looked up at her, his jaw set: I will be fine here, thank you, Mrs. Bajaj, for your kind inquiry. No one will make anything of me being in my study for a night or two before you lea...goodnight.

He turned his lamp off pointedly and settled sideways, handing over Prerna's shawl to her.

Prerna turned the light back on and he squinted in annoyance: You had a long day. Freshen up and go to the kitchen. You can't sleep on an empty stomach. I haven't had dinner either. (She stopped him talking) I don't want to hear another excuse, go to the breakfast nook when you are freshened. And you ARE sleeping on the bed. If you come back here, I will turn on every light in this study for the rest of the night.

Grumbling about how she always has to get her way, he got up and left the library.

Another quick update. How do you like it?

Poor Rishabh

Veena is right about Prerna coming to a decision about her life on her own

There was always someone who decided for her and she got to comfortable with it

She still doesn’t know him 🤔
