Bengalis have a special way of styling their homes which includes the Richie rich ones too. Great storytelling is about keeping at least the cultural relevance. But like you said, the mass audience doesn't really care about storytelling.

So, the best is to sit back and enjoy

@Bold, being a Bengali girl living in Kolkata , I can confirm this one. Basus are any thing but Bengali . Anything.

Their dressing style , talking style, body language , the house decorations - nothing , nothing has any similarities with any Bengali family , modern or traditional, rich or poor. Makers don't even do minimum research.
