@red - As much as I want to consider that justification, I find it hard to disagree. Not because the reasoning doesn't make sense, but because the portrayal of the Sharma family is so.
For viewers to understand and empathize with Prerna's situation, it is also necessary to see their STRUGGLE. All I see is flashy dresses, opulent homes (Sharmas too), generally great standard of living, jewellery and shopping - a standard most middle class families will find it difficult to maintain.
Either the makers could've scripted a different reason for Prerna's decision to marry an older man or taken care to portray the setup as such that it is BELIEVABLE.
At the moment, it is not!
@ blue - I disagree. None of us knew Madhuri was his first wife or that they run a sex racket together, until much later. All we knew and could see was Naveen's creepiness from day one. That was one of the key reasons behind viewers' objection to the marriage.
Secondly, but MORE IMPORTANT than the first one...this is a reboot of the original show and we expect the female lead will not succumb to regressive attitudes and circumstances as happened in the original. To see Prerna LITERALLY SURRENDER herself to this creep, when she couldv'e thought of alternatives - taking a bank loan, or from a friend, tell her parents, discuss it with Anurag, start working part-time or well, loads of other ways to go about this
She chose to simply give up, sit and dream about Anurag, ditch his well-meaning advice and even the PROOF he has attempted to show her, hate on Naveen but not lift a finger to actually get herself out of this mess. Which thinking woman even does this???
Had I seen NO OTHER RECOURSE, I may have swallowed this bitter pill - of her marrying a certified creep like Naveen, but not now. Just too hard to do so.
@maroon - that's what I'm wondering - How? And why?
@pink - You see it as love? I don't see it as such. I see her as extremely weak, quite resolute (and incorrectly so, considering someone like Anu is trying to make her see sense) and deep down somewhere I feel it's a one-sided love story...with Anu pining for her and Prerna falling into traps because she refuses to see sense and would rather be a symbol of maryrdom!
Judgment is called for, because we are, after all, the viewers..we invest our time and money, and to have the makers insult our intelligence every day, despite promising us sensible entertainment, is no less than manipulation. We're not asking for all the cards to be laid out in the beginning itself, the least we can ask for is a story and characters that fit in with the world we're living in with today!
