See there is a difference in watching seriels in a western channel and those in an indian channel. When u watch a western channel, you already have a mindset that "this is western culture and thus a lot different from 'our' culture". Whatever we see in that, we dont care whether it actually happens in their soceity or not, inside our mind, we have already drawn that line between the two cultures-it doesnt make any difference to us whether they are portraying realistic relationships or not.
And come on, what u said about vampires is different from what we are talking about…every small kid has atleast that common sense to understand that vampires don't exist on earth and whatever bullshit they show about that, they still know it is fiction. If you are comparing seriels on the same ground as something like vampires, then even cartoons should be banned right? Wat nonsense they don't show in cartoons, like a rock falling on top of a person and the person becoming flat like a wooden sheet and again the person standing up and all that rubbish…animals walking with legs, talking like humans, do u think kids are that senseless not to understand that animals cant talk or walk on 2 legs?!
But same is not the case with seriels…it is potrayed in a realistic manner like whenever there is some festival or something like that, they show it soo well-the way ppl celebrate it, does poojas, the way ppl enjoy these festivals together, etc..so it gives us a feeling as though whatever they are potraying is real...then ppl start trusting these seriels and thinking that what they portray is close to reality...once that trust is made, and then they go and show all kinds of rubbish like wat they show in ksbkbt, etc, normal ppl start believing it, common they don't show vampires, ghosts etc in these seriels…
And anyways, these western seriels are not made aiming at Indian population or any such society in particular…it is purely western and what happens in these seriels is like a routine in western culture…nobody there will protest…
i guess im a bit late and all, but i just had to mention about the mindset you are talking about...what actually happens is the demonstration effect(wow uni term). usually when ppl from here come in contact with any form of western culture, they get influenced to imitate the ppl there. mostly because developing countries are evolving and rather than sticking to the existing orthodoxy. they prefer to take up the western values. so when kids watch western shows, they try to erase the line you are talking about.
serials here and there are quite far fetched but they are based on real issues and yeah you dont live in india, i do....and the culture she is portraying is not too far away from reality. prems character maybe a baddie, but in general alot of the guys are like that these days. we see them everywhere, every club we go to. alot of my friends live in joint families and they dont watch these serials but are still complaining about it. she is portraying the urban life and not the rural one, she is portraying the changing times, not orthodoxy. and these religious groups here will only protest against irrelevant crap like tv shows, instead they should go join the anti reservation rallies like most of the youth has been doing, add to the strength there.
