The Real Vacation
The first Sunday, it took time for her to find the address coming in an auto. When she entered the area, she was awed by the bunglows. She doubted for a second that she might have come to a wrong place. Later, she told herself, 'Itna bada office hai toh ghar bhi bada hoga…' She did not want to think much about how and why.
She arrived at the gate of the house. She paid the auto and looked at the gate, and then the top of the house. 'Kaafi bada ghar hai…' she exclaimed. She peeped inside through the gaps of the gate. The security noticed her and came out.
"Kaun ho tum?" The security asked.
Bani was startled by the sudden voice. She calmed her rising heartbeat and said, "Main Bani…"
"Yahaan kya kar rahi ho?" He asked.
She said pointing towards the house, "Mujhe… mujhe andar jaana hai. Aditya jiju ne aane ko kaha hai." She said politely.
The security looked at her intently. She was wearing a simple salwar with her college bag worn crossed across. He had never seen anybody coming to the house saying their relative and she was calling Aditya her brother-in-law. He said, "Yahin ruko. Main aata hoon." He went inside and dialed his intercom. "Sir, koi ladki aayi hai. Aur aapko jijaji bula rahi hai."

"Ji… naam… Bani…" The security said looking at Bani looking at the house.
…
"Ji Sir. Abhi bhejtha hoon." He kept back the receiver. He came back to Bani and said, "Aap andar ja sakti hai."
Bani murmured a soft, "Ji…!" and entered through the gate. She walked through the pathway formed by ferns on either side. She touched them as she went. She peeped and looked at the garden. She liked it. There was also a 'jhoola'. She smiled. She looked at the grass on the ground. They were pretty healthy. 'Well-maintained garden', she told herself. She reached the portico. A car was parked. She touched the car as if it was real. Yes, it was real. She stood at the portico for sometime. She felt out of place all of a sudden. Her sudden urge was to run away from there. She stood there undecided.
She was brought out of her dilemma by a voice. "Bani… Andar aao." She turned abruptly to the direction of the voice. She looked confused at Aditya standing the door. She blinked and thought what she was thinking a few seconds before. When she remembered, she blinked wondering what to do.
By that time, Aditya reached her side. He looked at her and said, "Kya hua? Andar aao…" Bani looked at him without even moving slightly. Aditya put his arms around her and led her inside. "Chalo…" Bani looked at the floor as if searching something. Tears trickled in her eyes. By that time, she had reached inside. Aditya's voice made her raise her head.
"Maa, dekho kaun aaya hai…" Aditya said. Aditya had not told anyone at house except Jai that he had met Bani. He wanted it to be a surprise.
Bani looked forward. She saw Dadi and Masi seated in the couch in the living room. She saw Dadi and Masi frowning. They were trying to recognize her. Bani thought, they had aged a little… little… no… more little… no… little more…
Aditya said, "Maa, bolo ki kaun hai?" He asked again.
Then Masi's face cleared and she said surprisingly, "Bani…"
Bani stood rooted to the spot. She smiled slowly after few seconds. She walked slowly towards Masi and touched her feet. Then she moved to Dadi and touched her feet and looked at her. "Kaisi hai, Dadi?" she asked, her eyes little wet.
Dadi touched her hands and then held her face. "Bani… Meri bachchi…" She hugged her. "Kaisi hai tu? Kahaan thi itni din?"
"Main teek hoon Dadi…" Bani said.
"Masi ne pehchana lekin dadi ko saara pyaar…!" Masi said with a twitched lip.
Bani looked at Masi and went to her. She said, "Masi ko usse se bhi zyada pyaar…" and she hugged her smilingly.
At that moment, Bani forgot all her previous thoughts and confusions. Her mind cleared. She told herself that they were the same people whom she met in Aligarh.
She was pampered with lots of affection and attention, just what she needed. But her sixth sense said there was somewhere a distance. She pushed back the thought and mingled with them. She watched a movie with Dadi hearing to Masi's continuous rambling.
Jigyasa came back just before lunch. She was more shocked than surprised seeing Bani. She looked at Aditya doubtfully. Aditya raised his eyebrows as if asking 'What?' When Jigyasa narrowed her eyes, he just shrugged his shoulders. Jigyasa shook her head unbelievingly.
Anu arrived from her extra coaching classes towards the evening. Bani was surprised to see Anu grown-up. At that instant, she realized why it took so much time for Masi and Dadi to recognize her. It is not necessary that they had to remember her just because she hadn't forgotten them.
Anu and Bani had a blast in the evening. Bani carefully avoided the subject of her academics. She knew very well students at Anu's age would not prefer to be questioned a lot about their classes and education. At last, they came to the same topic. Bani said she would help her with her Science and Mathematics, that she remembered. Anu was thrilled.
At around 6 o' clock, she took leave. Masi and Dadi asked her to come as and when she was free. Anu demanded her to come on Saturdays. Bani promised that she would come whenever she would be free from her work.
Aditya insisted he would drop her. But Bani refused politely saying she would like to learn the city by herself.
At the end of the day, the doubts and hesitance which were there in her mind vanished.
At night, after so many months, she took her diary and entered the events of the day. She did not want to forget the day. It was special to her.

The Sundays she spent at Walias became her real vacation. Though her most favorite persons – her Krishna aunty, Uday uncle and Jai – were not there, it did not stop her to be happy. Because, the reason she liked to stay with the Walias was that they made her feel as if she was at home. It was that homely feeling that made her long for Walias.
She spoke as much as possible till she had nothing left to speak for the next one week. She laughed as much as possible till she was sated. She lived one week of her life in that one day. She started looking forward for the Sundays she would be spending with the Walias. The whole week she would be cheerful at the class and the hostel. It was a shocked surprise for her classmates and room-mates. But, Bani was oblivious to all these. She was just content. All of a sudden, she felt she had reason to smile and enjoy. Her sketches became colorful, strokes became elegant and the feel was happier. Pushkar was more surprised. There was no moody Bani on the other side of the phone. Pushkar did not press the matter so much. He was happy that the outcome was good. He was happy to see a cheerful Bani. What more he could ask for?

One Sunday, Dadi and Masi had gone to their afternoon nap. She was reading the newspaper for passing the time. Suddenly, the phone rang. Bani looked around to find if anyone was there. There was no one. She hesitated for a second, then attended the call.
"H…hello…" she said.
"Hello---" The 'hello' from the other end ended abruptly. Bani was surprised.

Jai was disturbed a lot since Aditya had informed about Bani and her regular visits. His mind craved to see Bani, but he was not ready yet. Not ready for what? But why?
He was restless. He knew Bani would be at his home that day. He wanted to speak to someone at home. He dialed the number, but did not expect Bani to pick up. He was surprised to hear some outsider's voice over the phone. Later, when he realized it might be Bani on the other end, he abruptly stopped his 'Hello'.
After few seconds, he asked, "Masi nahin hai kya?"
Bani was surprised. She wanted to ask 'Aap kaun bol rahe hai?', but the tone of the voice made her answer the question. "Masi aur Dadi so rahe hai…"
Jai made an irritating sound at the other end. Then he said, "Teek hai, jab jag jayenge tab kehna ki…" He stopped and said, "Koi baat nahin. Main baad mein phone karta hoon…"
Before he could end the call, Bani asked softly, "Ji, aap kaun bol rahe hai?"
Jai paused for a second and said, "Jai…" and he ended the call before Bani could speak anything.
On the other end, Bani was stunned beyond anything to react. It took few seconds for her to keep the receiver back. After sometime, she went to the kitchen and grabbed herself a glass of cold water.
