Part 23

Jai led Bani to the dining table after the breakfast time had passed long back. Jai made her sit in the chair as he sat in his usual chair. Tony came for orders.

Jai asked, "Sab ka breakfast ho gaya?"

"Nahin Sir… Masi aur Dadi abhi tak nahin aaye…" He said.

"Kyun?" Jai looked at him.

Tony did not say anything. Jai looked at Bani and found her looking at him.

"Kyun nahin breakfast kiye?" Bani asked slowly.

Jai noticed her face fell; he got up from his chair and said, "Chalo, unse poochte hai…" and he took Bani to Masi's and Dadi's room.

Jai knocked the door. When no voice came from the other side, he opened the door and found the room empty. He looked all around. But there were none. Jai led Bani outside and closed the door behind him lost in thoughts.

"Kahaan hai woh log…" Bani spoke out his thoughts aloud.

Jai looked around while saying, "Yahin kahin honge… chalo dhoondthe hain…" He started walking forward.

Bani spoke her innermost thoughts. "Kahin mujhse koi galti toh nahin huyi?" She said standing at the same spot.

Jai stopped in his tracks and turned around to look at her. He walked upto her and held her shoulders which made her look at him. "Tumse koi galti nahin huyi hai… aur aisa kabhi mat sochna ki 'tumse' galti huyi hogi… Samjhi…" He said as if he was speaking to a child. After all, she was no less than a child – A child carrying another child…

Jai knew very well that Masi and Dadi would not use the first floor. That meant they have to be there some where. Bani went to the garden to have a gulp of fresh air. As she entered the lawn, she saw two figures sitting in the swing. Bani smiled happily and ran back into the house to inform Jai. Jai was shocked to see her running to him. He took long strides saying, "Arey… ahishta… ahistha…" Bani stopped in front of him.

"Garden pe hain…" Bani said hurriedly pointing towards the garden.

"Uske liye daudke aane ki kya zaroorat hai?" Jai said. Bani glared at him. Jai said, "Sorry… sorry… Chalo…" He put his arms around her shoulders and walked towards the garden.

They reached the garden. Jai called them as he walked towards the swing with Bani. "Masi… Dadi…"

Masi and Dadi turned to look back at them. Masi felt happy seeing Jai with Bani being safe. Suddenly, she remembered Jai's behavior the previous night. Dadi was upset by Jai's words.

Jai came and stood before them. "Yahaan kya kar rahe hai?" When he did not get any answer, he continued, "Chaliye… breakfast karte hai…" But Masi and Dadi did not move. Jai did not know what to say. He said, "Kya hua?"

Bani's fears surfaced again. "Mujhse galti ho gayi kya?" She blinked at them.

Masi and Dadi were astounded. They looked at each other and then Bani. Jai's eyes were transfixed on Bani. His immediate reaction was to strangle her neck. How many times would he have to tell her not to speak in such a way…? He held himself.

"Aap nashta karne ke liye kyun nahin aaye?" Bani asked softly. "Chaliye na… saath nashta karte hai…" Bani invited them affectionately.

Dadi could not hold back. She got up. "Chalo Billo… Nashta karte hai…" She started walking towards the house holding Bani's wrist.

Masi too got up. "Chalo Jai…" and she started walking towards the house leaving Jai behind.

Jai was totally astounded. What had just happened? He came here to call Masi and Dadi for breakfast. They did not open their mouth till Bani spoke two sentences… only two sentences…! He shook his head and followed them to the house.

In the dining table, the three ladies behaved as if nothing happened a few minutes before. Jai was the one having trouble to adjust to all those happening. He chose to be a silent spectator of the scene unfolding before him. He was silently having his breakfast looking at the three ladies seated around the table.

"Bani, ye achaar lo. Tumhein pasand aayega." Masi offered a bowl of pickle.

"Nahin masi. Main achaar kha khake bore ho gayi…" She said. Then, after a thought she asked, "Yeh achaar kisne banaye… mujhe bahut pasand aaya…"

Masi and Dadi looked at each other and smiled. Dadi said, "Humne banayi thi… humein pata hai ki tumhein bahut pasand aayega… Lekin tum bhi teek keh rahi ho – zyada achaar khana achchi baat nahin hai."

Bani nodded and started to nibble her parata.

Masi said, "Koi baat nahin. Hum hain na… tumhein nayi nayi khana banake khilane ke…"

Bani giggled. Jai narrowed his brows. "Yeh teek nahin huyi… kitne din main aur Aditya rahe hai. Aapne aisa kabhi humse nahin banayi…"

Dadi said, "Haan… haan… zaroor banate, agar tum Bani ke haalat mein hote toh…"

"Lekin, Bani ki haalat ka zimmedar toh main hoon na… uska concession toh milna chaiye mujhe…" Jai chuckled.

Masi's and Dadi's jaws dropped. Masi hit him on his arms and said, "Jai, kuch toh sharm kar…"

"Kya Masi… khana hi toh maang rahe hai… dekhiye na… na mujhe masi ke haath ki khana mil rahi hai… na dadi ke…" He paused, looked at Bani through the corner of his eyes and said, "na meri biwi ki…"

Bani stopped what she was doing. Her face fell immediately. Jai immediately regretted his words. He closed his eyes to calm himself and said, "Bani… jaldi karo. Humein jaana hai…"

"Kahaan, beta?" Dadi asked.

"Check up ke liye, Dadi." Jai answered. He looked at Bani looking lost. He held a glass of milk in front of her to gain her attention. She looked at him and then his hands. It took few seconds for her to get the glass from his hand. She drank it without giving much thought.

"Ye toh bahut achchi baat hai?" Masi said. "Kab wapas aaoge tum donon?" She asked.

Jai was about to say, 'Pata nahin, Masi…' then he stopped himself and said, "Jaldi aa jaayenge, masi. Agar der ho gaya toh main phone karta hoon…"

"Achcha." Masi said.

After 10 minutes, Jai and Bani left for the hospital.

Masi's immediate thought was her Jai started to resurface again. She smiled at the thought.

Bani was quiet the entire journey. Jai tried from time to time to make her speak. But she stayed quiet with a frown in her forehead. Jai stopped the car at one point. He better stop her thoughts or he would regret later.

"Kya hua?" Jai asked.

Bani just shook her head.

"Kya soch rahi ho?" Jai asked.

After sometime, Bani said, "Main kitni buri hoon na?"

Jai was confused. "Kya?"

"Main kitni buri hoon na?" Bani said again.

Jai turned her face towards him. "Lekin, mujhse zyada nahin…" He said.

Bani's eyes widened. "Nahin… nahin… aap bahut achche hain…" She said quickly.

Jai shook his head smilingly and said, "Achcha?!"

"Haan… aap mera kitna khayal rakhte hain…!" Bani said tilting her head. Jai felt guilty. He gave a sad smile. Bani continued, "Main aapka bilkul khayal hi nahin rakh rahi hoon…"

Jai relaxed in his seat, "Woh isliye…." And he started the car, "ki… maine kabhi mauka hi nahin diya…" He gave a look at her, "Chalein?"

Bani looked at him and thought about his last sentence 'ki… maine kabhi mauka hi nahin diya…' She nodded her head and decided if he did not give a chance, she would take it.

A note of positiveness in her thoughts and she felt it was new…

They were exactly five minutes early for their appointment. It was the same hospital where Bani was admitted the previous week. Jai looked at the name plate at the door Dr. Anitha Mathur.

The gynaecologist was a lady in her fifties, warm and caring. Jai was relieved. Actually it was Tarun who had suggested her. Jai thanked Tarun in his mind.

After they were seated, Jai looked at his side to have a look at Bani. Only, then he realized that Bani was nervous. Jai touched her joined hands, which made her look at him. Jai smiled which made Bani blink.

The doctor smiled. "So first-time parents?" Jai and Bani looked at her instantly. The doctor continued, "It's understandable… But don't you think there are millions of first-time parents! So, what is the need to be nervous?" She said in a teasing tone.

"May be more than millions of first-time mothers, but not all are my wife, you know?!" Jai chuckled.

The doctor agreed by nodding her head. She turned to Bani, "So what say, Mrs. Walia?... Well…" She opened the appointment sheet of the day and said, "Bani… right?" Bani nodded. "How are you, today?" She asked.

Bani said a soft, "Teek hoon."

"And you will be fine. Get up. Tumhara weight dekhte hai" She called Bani to a weighing machine beside her.

Bani hesitated for a second and then got up. She stood on the weighing machine. The doctor noted it down on a paper and stood up. "Chalo, Bani. Thoda regular tests le lete hai." She stood at the entrance of the adjoined room and waited for Bani. Bani entered the adjoined room and found a bed over there. She heard the doctor say, "Up, there."

Bani removed her chapals and climbed to lie on the bed. The doctor stopped her from lying and asked her to sit erect. Bani did what the doctor asked her to do. She first checked her pulse and then asked her to lie down. She then checked her blood pressure. Not once, the doctor gave away her emotion in her face. From time to time, she smiled at Bani. Bani gave back a hesitant smile. She then bared her belly region and kept pressed her fingers to the lower belly and tried to find a particular region. After sometime, the doctor asked her to sit up. Bani rearranged her clothes and the doctor led her out of the room.

Bani went and sat beside Jai silently. The doctor sat back on her chair and said, "Mr. Jai Walia. There are some regular tests which had to be taken at the time of pregnancy. I will ask a nurse to help you both. Meanwhile…" She started to scribble some medicines on her pad. She tore the paper and gave it to Jai. "You can give this tablet after every meal." Jai got it from her hand. "Kal milte hai, Bani." She gave a smile to Bani and went to press the buzzer.

Before the doctor pressed a buzzer, Jai said, "Doctor, I would prefer a complete medical check up for Bani. Bahut din ho gaye…"

The doctor looked at him and said, "Aap donon kal aayiye. The complete check up is best taken early in the morning in an empty stomach. Come tomorrow morning at 6 AM. I will arrange for that. Now, you can just take the regular pregnancy tests. You can collect the report tomorrow." She said and pressed the buzzer to call a nurse.

When the nurse entered, Jai said "Thank you, Doctor." and got up. "Chalein Bani…." Bani got up and gave a smile to the doctor and left with Jai.

It took about one hour for the nurse to collect the samples and to do the tests. Jai bought the prescribed tablets and waited patiently outside. Atlast, when she came out, the nurse told Jai, "Aap kal gyarah baje ke baad aakar reports collect kar liye."

Jai nodded and looked at Bani. He placed his back of his palm on her cheek, "Tum teek ho?"

Bani smiled slightly and nodded her head.

"Kya hua?" Jai asked.

Bani scrunched her nose and said, "Mujhe bhook lagi hai…"

Jai blinked in surprise for a second. Then, he shook his thoughts away and said, "Chalo, ghar chalthe hai…" and led her out of the hospital.

When Jai started the car, something came across his mind. He went on driving for the next half an hour until Bani realized that she had reached a known place – the beach. She grew excited and looked out through the window. She heard Jai asking something.

"Woh bhaiya ke dhaba kahaan hai, Bani?" Jai asked stopping the car at one point.

Bani gave directions to him.

When they reached the dhaba, Jai stopped the car and Bani got down immediately.

"Namaste, Shankar bhaiya…" She happily called.

Lunch time was yet to start. So the dhaba was not much crowded.

Shankar looked at Bani and said, "Arey, Bani… aaja… aaja…" He immediately washed his hand and came to receive her. "Kaisi ho? Arey itne dhoop mein aane ki kya zaroorat hai? Shaam ko aa jaate…" He made her sit in the bench and asked her again, "Kaisi hai tu?"

Shankar turned at the direction of the voice which replied his question. "Thoda khana de dijiye. Use bahut bhook lagi hai…" Jai said as he reached the place after parking the car. He sat beside Bani and put his arms around her. "Teek keh raha hoon na?" He asked her. Bani grinned and bit her lower lip.

Shankar looked questioningly at Bani. Jai said, "Uska pati hoon."

Shankar smiled and called his wife. "Savitha, Bani aayi hai. Uske liye khana lagao…" He turned to Jai and Bani and said, "Do minute."

Savitha appeared after a minute wiping her sweat with her 'pallu'. She smiled at Bani and asked, "kaisi hai tu?"

Bani said, "Ji, teek hoon bhabhi…"

Shankar said, "Yeh saab, apni Bani ke pati hai…" Shankar introduced Jai to his wife. Savitha did a 'namaste' to Jai. Shankar did not stop. "Bani ke liye khane le aana. Use bhook lagi hai…"

Savitha nudged her husband, "Pehle kyun nahin bataye? Chal, Bani…"and she took Bani inside.

Jai was left alone with Shankar. Shankar was still in a shock of a sophisticated gentleman being introduced as Bani's husband.

"Bani ne aapki bahut tareef ki…" Jai said.

"Achcha?" Shankar became little conscious.

"Haan…"

"Bani toh bahut dinon se yahaan aa rahi hai… use sab pata hai." Shankar said.

"Aapka pav bhaji khaya tha maine… bahut achcha tha…" Jai tried to keep up the topic in order to avoid the awkwardness.

"Bahut Shukriya, saab…" Shankar said.

"Mera naam Jai hai…" Jai said. "Saab-waab kehne ki zaroorat nahin hai…"

"Phir bhi aap toh bahut bade hai…" Shankar said.

"Haan… umr mein toh bada hi hoon…" Jai chuckled.

Shankar frowned. "Matlab?"

Jai said, "Sach hi toh keh raha hoon. Bani se bahut bada hoon…" Shankar's eyes grew wider. "Bani ko main bahut saalon se jaanta hoon…" He paused and then continued, "Lekin, jitna zyada aap use jaante hai, shayad utna main use samaj nahin paya…" Jai said genuinely.

Jai tried to change the topic. "Aap kitne saalon se yeh dhaba chalate aaye hai?"

"Yahin… kuch paanch saalon se…" Shankar replied.

"Aapne ise badaya nahin kya?" Jai asked.

"Badaya na saab, pehle redi mein tha… ab dukaan mein hai… Ye mere baab ki amaanat hai… shayad isliye is jagah ko chodke jaane ka mann nahin kar raha hai…" Shankar said looking around.

Jai looked at him instantly. At the same time, he heard Bani and Savitha laughing inside. He heard Shankar saying, "Bahut kam log hote hai jo humare jaise logon ke saath baitkar apnon ki tarah pesh aate hai…" Jai turned to look at Shankar. He was looking at the direction of the laughter.

Shankar turned his attention to Jai. "Aap kya karte hai, saab?"

"Main ek hotel chalaata hoon…"

"Achcha… naam kya hai… kahaan pe hai?"

"Pune highway par hai… Walia group of hotels…" Jai said.

Shankar's eyes grew in astonishment. "Aap Jai Walia hai???!!"

"Haan…. Kyun?" Jai smiled.

"Mere kuch dost aapke hotel mein kaam karte hai…" Shankar said happily.

"Achcha…?" Jai said atlast engaging in a casual conversation with the man.

"Haan… mujhe bhi bulaya tha… lekin maine mana kar diya…" Jai looked at him questioningly. Shankar replied, "mera baap thoda bimar the na… isliye…"

"Aap kabhi bhi aa sakte hai…" Jai offered.

"Nahin saab… main yahin teek hoon… yahaan rahoonga toh lagega ki baap ka ashirwaad hamesha mere saath hai…" Shankar said little emotionally.

Jai closed his eyes for few seconds. He heard the ladies' footsteps. He opened his eyes to see Bani coming out. She came and sat with Jai. Jai asked, "Khana khayi?"

Bani nodded her head. "Zyada hi kha li…" Bani scrunched her nose.

Jai fished out in his trouser pocket and took out a strip of tablets. He gave one tablet to her to gulp. Bani gulped it without much stubbornness.

After talking with Shankar for sometime, Bani yawned. Jai laughed slightly and said, "Chalo, nikhalte hai… warne in donon ka business hours chala jaayega…"

Bani nodded her head and bid 'bye' to both of them.

Shankar came to Jai and said, "Achcha laga aapse milke… Aap Bani ko bahut khush rakhenge…"

Jai smiled and help his hand, then bid, 'Bye' to him and did a 'namaste' to Savitha and turned to join Bani.

Shankar and Savitha stood there till the car left the place.
