Hi,
This update is a somewhat a filler, to help progress the relationship between Jai and Bani. I am planning to end this ff in about 3-4 chapters. Hope you all like it, comments and suggestions always welcome.
Bani I wanted to thank you.
Bani looked up confused.Thank me she asked , for what?
He stared at her, his eyes shinning mischieviously. For the excellent parathas, they were wonderful.
She blushed and then smiled inspite of herself. You're very welcome, Mr Walia.
Good night, Bani he said and turned to walk towards his chair.
Good night Mr Walia, she said almost relieved, and turned to walk away. Just as she reached the door. She heard him again call out her name, she turned to find him walking towards her.
One more thing, before you go.
Yes, Mr Walia?, she asked. He lifted his had and reached up behind her head and pulled at her bun, her hair fell tumbling down . She looked at him suprised.
You look better with your hair open Bani, he siad turning around and walking to his desk. Bani stared at his retreating back and stood there not knowing what to do . He sat at his desk smiling at her for a bit and then spoke.
Good night Bani, and please call me Jai, Mr Walia is too formal for my wife.
A red tinge covered her entire face and she mumbled good night and ran out. She could swear she heard his deep throated laughter comg from the room.
CHAPTER 8
Bani was in a frenzy trying to get everything set up. Rano had three days holidays coming up, and she had decided to visit. Jai had walked in to an hour before he had to pick up Rano to freshen up, but couldn't find Bani anywhere. He called out to her, and she appeared from her room a little later, a troubled look on her face. She smiled stiffly at him, and spoke softly. I will get your coffee ready, why don't you go freshen up? Jai looked at her curiously. Is everything okay Bani? Yes, she mumbled, putting he milk on the stove. Jai walked towards her, and gently placed his hand on her shoulder. Bani stilled and found herself unable to move. Jai gently turned her around and faced him towards her. Bani's eyes remained lowered, till Jai raised her chin to make him look at him. Bani, what's the matter? Bani bit her lip, looking embarrassed, it's really nothing. Bani, Jai said a little more forcefully. Bani took a deep sigh, it's just that Rano will be here, and she will know we share different rooms, I......she couldn't continue, and lowered her eyes again.
You should move all your things to my room while Rano is here. Bani looked back at him shocked. Look, Jai continued when he didn't get a response from her. I will sleep on the couch and you can take the bed, okay. It's only a matter of three days, we can be like roommates. This way Rano will never know, and also Dad won't find out. Bani still looked unsure. I...., but Jai cut her off. Bani, he spoke gently, holding her hand, we are happy with our situation, we have formed our own little world here, but neither Rano nor my parents will understand this, and you know it will cause them unnecessary pain. You understand what I am trying to say right? Bani nodded, but kept looking down. Jai gently raised her chin, so she was looking at him. Don't you trust me, he asked? She caught his eyes and saw the pained look on his face, and spoke, 'More than I trust myself'.
Jai stilled hearing her answer and his eyes fell on her luscious lips. He rubbed his thumb gently on her lower lip, and Bani held her breath and closed her eyes. Suddenly the shrill ring of Jai's telephone made her snap open her eyes, and she saw him fumbling with his phone. She blushed and tore her gaze away from him, and he answered the phone with an awkward, Hi. Yes, Rano I am on my way she heard him say. He hung up, and spoke hesitantly, it was Rano, she called to say she will be at the station in half hour. Bani nodded. I'll be back soon. Bani nodded again.
When Jai had got back an hour later with Rano, he met Bani at the door who smiled at him, and when he smiled back, she blushed a deep red. Rano noticed this and thanked god silently. Her sister was finally happy.
Jai watched the two sisters chatting away. He looked at the clock, it was 11:30 at night. Aman had been put to bed, and Jai felt bored. He stood up, and cleared his throat. 'good night Rano', I will see you tomorrow. Rano stood up and looked at him apologetically, Sorry jiju, I lost track of time. I won't keep Bani di up much longer. No, no Rano, I understand completely. You have a lot to talk about, lot ot catch up on can sit up as long as you want, he smiled at her. Rano nodded. He looked at Bani, who had her eyes lowered. Good night Bani. Bani mumled good night without looking up. I will leave the night light on for you Bani he said and leaned in and kissed her on her cheek. Bani's eyes shot up and a huge blush came over her face. Rano squealed, Awww, How cute, di and she began giggling.
An hour later, Bani tipped into the room. She saw Jai sleeping uncomfortably on the couch, his log legs dangling off the side, and the bedside light was turned on. She would tell him to switch wth her tomorrow, he looked very awkward sleeping on the couch.
The rays of sunshine flooded the room, and she heard the door knob turn. She knew it was Aman. She was about to go open the door when she heard Rano talking. Beta, you have to knock first, and she knocked. Jai woke up with a start and looked at Bani, who looked lost. He immediately flew out off he couch and jumped into the bed, and slid under the sheets. Bani took in a deep breath and proceeded to open the door.
Hi, Di Rano said and Aman ran in the room, and got up on he bed and jumped on Jai. Jai let out a loud groan and Aman laughed. Jai pulled off the sheets from his face, and picked up a pillow and both he and Aman got into a pillow fight. Rano and Bani started lauging seeing the sight, when Rano's eyes landed on the couch. There was a pillow by the floor and a blanket draped carelessly on the side. She frowned, and then looked back at Bani watching Jai and Aman fondly. She dismissed the feeling she got and slipped away, leaving the family to have their fun.
The next two days followed the same routine. Jai refused to take the bed and allow Bani to sleep on the couch. But half hour before Aman was to get up, Jai would slide into the bed to be prepared for his arrival.
It was Rano's last day, and Bani had taken the day off to spend with Rano. She was busy preparing kheer when Rano sat up on the table beside her. Di, she asked hesitantly, can I ask you something? Yes, Rano, of course. Di, are you happy with jiju? Bani stilled for a second, and without turning around asked Rano, Yes, I am but why do you ask Rano? Di, it's just that sometimes when I look at you , it's like you have all this love for him, but then you have this distant look about you, like you are yearning for him or something. Bani held her breath, Was she so obvious?
She kept quiet for a few minutes and then spoke, Rano you are just imagining things, we both are very happy together, and you have seen him with Aman, he loves him like his own, she replied stirring the pot slowly. Rano looked at her concentrating on making kheer. She slid off the table and stood near Bani. Then why are you not looking at me when you are talking about him, and why was there a pillow and bedsheet on the couch in your room, and why was Aman pointing to the guest room, saying mama's room and was dissapointed on not fiding you there? He looked for you in the kitchen before he ran to jiju. I mean di, what's going on, are you and jiju not........she trailed off not knowing how to put it. Bani slowly turned towards Rano, and saw her with her head held low. Rano, she said softly. I thought you were finally happy di, I thought you finally ahd someone to love you, the way you deserved to be loved, finally get a chance to have a family of your own, she said and started crying. Bani hugged her, and softly whispered shhhhh, till she slowly settled down.
Rano, she said a while later. I am happy here. Mr Walia is really a wonderful man. We may not share a traditional husband wife relationship, but we are happy with the way things are. We care for each other and we care for Aman, and he simply adores Mr Walia. But, di what about love? Love , Bani signed. Love is overrated Rano. Rano looked up at her, you don't really mean that di, I have seen you look at jiju, you have never looked at anyone else that way. Don't you love him? Bani blushed inspite her self and smiled softly. I think I do, she replied softly. Rano smiled. Then, why don't you give your marriage a try di? Jiju is really a wonderful man, he is perfect for you.
Bani bit her lip. Rano, love can't be forced, it can't be rushed. Mr Walia looks at me as his friend, nothing more. But, di have you asked him how he feels. No, Rano I can't do that, what if he doesn't feel the same way, what if it ruins everything. I am selfish, I don't want to lose what I have with him. But di, what if he does feel the same way? I just can't take the chance Rano, Bani said getting up. Now, please let it go, and don't tell anyone about this, she pleaded. Rano nodded her head and they sat silently for a while, before Bani had to get ready to pick Aman.
Two days later, Bani and Jai were invited to the Walia's house for Diwali celebration. Here too they were forced to sleep in the same room. Unfortunately, though Krishna kept knocking at their door, ever so often, that after Jai had tripped brusing himself running from one end to another, it was decided that Jai would just sleep on the bed. It was awkward for both of them at first. But they knew they had no other choice.
The sunlight streamed into the room. Jai got a whiff of sweet scent of rose and opened his eyes. Bani was sleeping on his hand and her hair was spread across the pillow. He stared at her, her innocent face, a saw a strand of hair lay carelessly on her face. He reached over gently and tucked it behind her ear. Bani stirred. Jai immediately shut his eyes. Bani opened her eyes and saw Jai's face, she smiled, then realized where she was. She stared at him for a while drinking in his appearance. She saw his hair flopped over his forhead, and smiled at how cute he looked sleeping. She reached her hand out to set it back, but stopped midway. She then gently lifted herself to make sure she didn't wake him up. and got off the bed. She pulled the blanket and covered him with it, and left to the bathroom to get ready. Jai opened his eyes, and smiled. He liked having her close. He took in a deep breath, her sweet scent still lingered on his bed.
That night the Walia's had a party. Jai peered over his glass at Bani standing in the corner surrounded by women, she stood out in her pink sari, simple yet enchanting at the same time. He was still looking at her, when she looked in his direction and smiled. He quickly averted his eyes. He didn't know what had gotten in to him lately, he couldn't help looking at her, even when he had people talking to him, he wasn't really listening. He found himself looking in her direction, catching her twinkling laughter, her animated talking, her gentle guidance to Aman. He stared at his drink, trying to wash her image form his mind. He didn't realize when his feelings towards Bani became so intense.
He knew he always looked forward to speding time with her, hearing her laugh, talk, just enjoying her concern for him. He loved how her face lit up everytime she was happy, how her face reflected so easily all the varied emotions she felt. He loved her xpressive eyes, they twinkled everytime she laughed. But, now the attraction he was feeling fer her was increasing. Maybe it was all the festivities going on, or the fact that they had been sharing a bed lately, making him all the more aware of her. He was finding it harder to ignore her now, he was finding it harder to hide his feelings form her.
He shook his head slightly to clear his thoughts. He needed some fresh air, he excused himself saying he needed a refill on his drink and slipped outside. The cool air immediately washed over him, and he felt less tensed. He sat on the swing and leaned back closing his eyes, thinking about the last few days.
